American Bonaparte: Napoléon's Great-Nephew in the President's Cabinet
Tumblr media
In June 1815, Napoléon Bonaparte’s bid for continued military glory in Europe was crushed by allied British and Prussian troops at the Battle of Waterloo. Following his surrender, the former Emperor of France had hoped that the British might allow him to live the remainder of his life in exile in the United States. However, Napoléon had already escaped exile once before (from the Mediterranean island of Elba) and once again rallied the French around him in a last-ditch effort to conquer the European continent prior to Waterloo. Unwilling to risk another vanishing act, the British instead banished Napoléon to one of the most isolated places in the world – the remote island of Saint Helena, in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, between Africa and South Africa – for the rest of his life.
Some of the Bonaparte family did eventually reach the United States, however. In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Charles Joseph Bonaparte (1851-1921), the American-born grandson of Napoléon’s youngest brother, Jérôme, as the U.S. Secretary of the Navy. A year later, Roosevelt shifted Bonaparte from the Department of the Navy to the Justice Department. For the rest of Theodore Roosevelt’s Presidency, the great-nephew of the man responsible for the Napoléonic code was the United States Attorney General – America’s top law enforcement official – where he helped establish the Bureau of Investigation, better known today as the FBI.

Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi by Joseph Franque, 1812
Elisa Bonaparte was born on January 3, 1777. She was not as well-known as her sisters, beautiful Pauline and treasonous Caroline, but she was more capable than either of them. In fact, she was the Bonaparte sibling most like Napoleon, although she had the least influence over him. Napoleon himself said, “Elisa has the courage of an Amazon; and like me, she cannot bear to be ruled.” In 1805, he made her the Princess of Piombino and Lucca, where she formed an elaborate court, in imitation of the one in Paris. She took her duties seriously, ruling as a benevolent despot.
Elisa did such a good job that, in 1809, Napoleon made her Grand Duchess of Tuscany, a place she had long had her eye on. She moved her court to the Pitti Palace in Florence, which she refurbished in competition with Caroline’s court in Naples. Elisa's husband, Félix Baciocchi, commanded the local military division under his wife’s supervision. The two lived apart and took lovers.
When Napoleon’s empire began to crumble in 1814, Elisa broke away from her brother, hoping to save her own position. It was no use, as the Tuscans showed no sign of attachment to her and Elisa and Baciocchi had to flee. They tried, unsuccessfully, to make off with the silver and furniture from several of the palaces.
When Napoleon escaped from Elba and returned to France in March of 1815, the Austrians arrested Elisa and imprisoned her. She was released once Napoleon was safely on his way to exile on St. Helena. Elisa was given permission to live in Trieste, where she assumed the title of Countess of Compignano. She died of infection on August 7, 1820, at the age of 43.
When news of Elisa’s death reached Napoleon, he shut himself up alone for several hours. When he emerged, he said, “There is the first member of my family who has set out on the great journey; in a few months I shall go to join her.” He died nine months later, on May 5, 1821.

I saw a post somewhere (I can't find it now agghhh if anyone has it pls send it to me) about les mis characters and specifically Marius being an accurate representation of how french people behave irl and the example OP gave (I think) was a girl who currently has an Napoleon altar in her bedroom... Wherever you are I just want you to know that one of my classmates in college has a Napoleon phone case, meaning the back of his phone actually looks like this:
Tumblr media
I asked him if he's a Bonapartist and he told me no, not at all. Then he looked away slightly embarrassed and he hid the phone. He has a mustache and was reading Proust and of course, he studies law.

Jerome Bonaparte.
The youngest of the four Bonaparte brothers and also the only sibling living to see the Second Empire. (Not that he was very fond of Napoleon III.)
And this apparently despite a lead bullet lodged in his sternum from a duel with Davout's brother. A duel fought over a woman. When Jerome was 15 years old.
Mostly known for his extravagance and expensive taste. And - that's why I love him best: for being completely undeterred by big brother's obligatory sermons.
Also much more intelligent than people give him credit for: Like it or not, Naps, but Jerome did not go to Moscow...

I tried to look up with whom Caroline Bonaparte had affairs and I found this website through my research and I don't know how to feel about this because these comments are not detailed and objective enough for me EVEN THOUGH there are sources mentioned at the end. With all of this in mind, I wanted to ask you all if you know more about these points and if you can confirm to have read about these incidents:
Let's look at some points which let me be confused, shall we?
1. Did Lannes and Caroline ever have a relationship/situationship?
Tumblr media
I was more confused than informed after reading these two sentences. Specifically the "unless it was him" part because I read it as if Napoleon made an exception for Lannes which he didn't? The structure of the sentence doesn't make any sense for me. At the same time, English is my third languages. Maybe I just need to read through my grammar books again and study... All of this aside, did they really have something going on?
2. Naps slapping Achille
Tumblr media
I heard about the incident of Naps pulling at Achille's ear once but just randomely mentioning this was ???? And the thing is, this wasn't elaborated at all. When did this happen? How did this happen? How did Murat and Caroline react? I can imagine Murat getting quite protective. This incident is described as the Bonapartes disputing about something and then Napoleon slapping his nephew out of nowhere. And that's it...
3. Was Caroline really "thrilled" about the idea of staying Queen?
Tumblr media
Pls, let me explain: I am aware of Caroline's ambitions but the verb "thrilled" sounds wrong in my eyes because, as far as I am concerned, it contains the fact that Joachim, the father of her four children, would be dead. She sounds like as if Murat didn't mean anything to her and... that wasn't the case, was it? I am open for corrections. I really want to learn.
4. This... just isn't true.
Tumblr media
If I remember corectly, Murat's and Napoleon's relationship wasn't the best already (before Russia) because Murat wanted to reign in Naples and not to be a puppet of Napoleon.
Caroline and Murat themselves went through big highs and very big lows in 1810... i. e., Caroline went through a miscarriage.
5. Murat's indecisiveness considering leaving Napoleon's side after everything..
Tumblr media
Gahwd, whoever wrote this, your choice of words is terrible. He wasn't an idiot. He was humane. . _.
6. Did all of the siblings really blame Caroline for everything that happened to Naps? As if they weren't done with his bullshit too... you can't tell me that Joseph wasn't just done after the peninsular war.
Tumblr media
Why on earth would Napoleon blame Caroline for Russia? She wasn't there? In addition to that, Naps was a realist who liked to take risks and had ambitions. He is not delusional... 😭🤡
In conclusion: I am confusion.

The Prince Imperial (Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte, son of Napoleon III and Empress Eugénie, known to Bonapartists as Napoleon IV) "was one of only two people Henry Ponsonby encountered who were not afraid of Queen Victoria; the other was John Brown. Later, Ponsonby might have added to his list Beatrice's husband, Henry of Battenberg, whom, save in height, the Prince strongly resembled." (Matthew Dennison, The Last Princess: The Devoted Life of Queen Victoria's Youngest Daughter)

Not technically a prompt, I guess, but I'm curious; do you have any headcanons on why Crispin is at Thorney Towers? I've heard a bunch of different ideas from different people, lol
I feel like he was admitted simply due to his catatonic state, although considering the way he so easily beats Fred (I imagine Fred is rather good at board games, he just seems like that type of guy) I don't believe he's delusional, although he thoroughly and conciously enjoys seeing another man go insane infront of him, so for a while I considered he is just a half crazy asshole who is kinda sadistic and used to people treating him like shit, thus treats others the same way.
Tumblr media
I also considered that maybe that state he was in was more of a medical issue than a mental one, then perhaps mis-diagnosed and thrown in thorney towers, but that's more on the "it'd be interesting" side than what I actually think would've happened.
