World Sparrow Day
World Sparrow Day, observed annually on March 20, is a day to raise awareness of the protection of sparrows. We are particularly excited about this holiday because we just can’t resist the cuteness of these little birds and we know at the end of this article, you will be as excited to join too.
History of World Sparrow Day
World Sparrow Day is an initiative started by the Nature Forever Society of India (founded by Mohammed Dilawar) along with the Eco-Sys Action Foundation of France and many other organizations around the world. Though the holiday carries the name Sparrow, it was mainly created for awareness of Sparrows but also includes the beauty and biodiversity of other common birds that may share the same space as us.
Mohammed Dilawar, a dedicated conservationist, started the campaign to provide special care for house Sparrows in Nashik. The idea to make the campaign official was born during an informal discussion at the office of the Nature Forever Society. Thereafter, the first World Sparrow Day was observed in 2010 all around the world.
It created a platform for bird conservationists to network and exchange ideas to improve conservation. It aims to provide a point of contact for people around the world to come together and create awareness of the necessity for the protection of common biodiversity or species of lower conservation.
Sparrows or house sparrows have been known to live in green patches and backyards chirping away in urban areas though, during the harsh summers, they require cool shades and water. They’ve always been quite common in residential areas but are currently on the verge of extinction due to noise pollution, lack of nesting sites in modern buildings, pesticide usage, and non-availability of food as reported by ornithologists.
The awareness created led to the house sparrow becoming the state bird of  Delhi in 2012.
As the years go by, more people are joining the campaign to conserve these birds as a way of giving back to nature. Some have gone as far as creating bird nests for sparrows and other common, birds in the community.
World Sparrow Day timeline
1863 Introduction of the House Sparrow
The house sparrow is introduced into America, parts of Africa, Australia, and New Zealand from this time, such that it is now the most widespread urban bird in the world.
2008 Heroes of the Environment
The founder of the Nature Forever Society, Mohammed Dilawar is named one of the ‘Heroes of the Environment.’
2012 State Bird of Delhi
The efforts of the Nature Forever Society, a conservationist group, lead to the declaration of the house sparrow as the state bird of Delhi.
2019 I Love Sparrows
The theme for World Sparrow Day in 2019 is ‘I Love Sparrows.’

Making of the World Sparrow Day
Sparrows were once one of Britain’s most common birds, however, their population has declined in recent years.
Although house sparrows are non-migratory birds, the urban flock had traditionally moved to the countryside to feed on ripening grain fields.
The first World Sparrow Day was celebrated in 2010 in different parts of the world.
The Nature Forever Society instituted the first Sparrow Awards in March 2011 to encourage the efforts made towards the cause and to selflessly conserve the environment.
The idea to mark World Sparrow Day came up during a discussion at the N.F.C’s office where the idea was to earmark a day for the conservation of the house sparrow and other common birds.
Why World Sparrow Day is Important
It’s a day to admire nature’s beauty
It is a time to spread  awareness on biodiversity conservation
It is a fun event
World Sparrow Day is a day to celebrate the conservation and protection of sparrows. It is also a day to admire the beauty of biodiversity and nature.
This day provides a meeting ground for people from different parts of the world to come together and play an important role in advocacy and spreading awareness of the need of conserving common biodiversity. We love this!
Various kinds of campaigns, events, and activities are organized on this day to encourage people to participate and contribute to the cause. See what you can do to help!

Sparrow’s Rest

Identifying a sparrow among sparrows isn't always easy. Merlin seems to like Bachman's sparrow (Peucaea aestivalis) for this image. I'll go with Bachman's but I'm not sure. Merlin also likes field sparrow and Brewer's sparrow. I'll eliminate the Brewer's because it's out of range. When using Merlin to listen to bird songs, it picks up the Bachman's sparrow and song sparrow as well. The black mark on its chest is interesting.
@birdcounter
One thing that I like about purchasing prints from Pixels over some other sites that I've looked at, is at Pixels, they do custom frames and canvas stretching. I don't need to stretch my photo to fit a frame, they build the frame to the size of my photo. That's kind of awesome. Take a look, you can try different fames and other media online, just to see what they would look like, without having to purchase anything: https://swede1952-photographs.pixels.com

This season on wildlife rehab (so far):
I finally got rabies vaccinated this Feb! Here I come, vector species *rubbing my hands together*
Very first babies of the season were three horned larks who threw me, the "bird-whisperer" as one coworker insists, completely for a loop. The last time we had a single horned lark was two years ago
Also one absolutely teeny house finch. Pink and fuzzy, profoundly little (he's fully feathered now and learning to self feed and we're all so proud of our baby!!!)
...followed by a dozen more older finches
Two other species we haven't had in at least the three years I've worked there - Lincoln's sparrow and White-crowned sparrow 🤨
(I mean we've had brewers and chipping sparrows and even a lark sparrow but ??)
A baby northern flicker, so young he looked just a little bit,, obscene lol (he had a horrible first day recovering from his injuries but now his feathers are growing in and he's perching on bark and we're also so proud 🥺)
Bunnies, bunnies, and more bunnies!! Good Lord they are such little dollops of velvet with lil pipe-cleaner sized paws, and you're telling me I get to hold them??? 🥺💕💕
Was literally about to close the gate behind me leaving one night, still in the driveway,, and my car headlights catch the eyes of a still-alive raccoon that had JUST been hit by a car moments earlier,,,
so I hit reverse, get out of the car, and heckin sprint back inside to fetch the only two people left in the building at 10pm - the actual Raccoons Staff - to help catch it
Finally typical baby birds that are not finches! But ofc it's starlings that eat like crap
And robins! And doves! ...with broken legs or subq emphysema (thanks outdoor cats)
Don't worry, we fixed the broken legs!
Still working on the sqe tho, slowly but surely
And bunnies with de-gloved hind-ends
(thanks outdoor cats)
Oh, some of the finches are being weird, like they've aspirated but their lungs are perfectly fine?? HAVE A PELICAN
A PELICAN WITH A GIGANTIC, EXPENSIVE, TRIPLE TRI-HOOKED FISHING LURE
LITERALLY HOOKING HER WHOLE FOOT TO HER THROAT POUCH. TEARING HOLES IN HER FOOT AND HER VERY IMPORTANT THROAT POUCH
Also she almost snapped two staff members who tested her patience teehee (she got fixed up n released! Yay!!)
Back to regularly scheduled bunny
I learned how to bottle feed two baby raccoons and one of them just wanted to snuggle into my elbow for safety 🥺💕🥺
Back to regularly scheduled finches. I mean starlings. I mean birds.
I said something in off-handed retail-tuned humor to a staff member i don't know super well to cope with understaffing stress and found out I'm viewed as senior staff with valuable love and expertise who is respected enough that my comment raised serious concern 😭🥺
Baby crow. This year's protocol to avoid habituation when feeding corvids is a camo suit with a picture of a crow face taped to the hat. With eye holes cut out.
Hate this so much I decided to sculpt a hand puppet crow head to try (like they used for the California condors). This is currently laying half finished on my desk
Those problem finches be problem-ing. Throwing everything we have at them and still haven't figured out how to fix them. Cue group problem solving in the Bird ICU Slack channel
Somewhere in all that were some fox kits and a separate adult whose shedding winter coat completely saved him from a fence wire amputating his tail
All these bunnies need antibiotics (thanks outdoor cats)
The softest, sweetest adult goldfinch 🥺
The most ferocious adult house sparrow, victimizing all my coworkers (not me tho, I'm immune to bird beak)
Both courtesy of window strikes
Two - count em, TWO common poorwills in one week!
A red-winged blackbird? In my rehab center??? Since when does anyone find injured rwb's?
TIL a lot of flickers n such end up caught in expanding foam sealant. Like. Come on guys. If you're putting that stuff anywhere. Sit watch until it's dry.
Come on, it's not that hard. Avoid having to carve out the screaming animal you were trying to evict
Anyways my dad/other boss is a contractor so I shot him a text and helped our vet & intake staff learn how to save more such lives in the future! The Flicker in question was able to keep almost all of his flight feathers intact (yay, less regrowth time!), regain his legs n feet, and eagerly scarf down all the mealworms we can give him
Btw a good solvent for expanding foam? High content rubbing alcohol
Anyways
Baby beavers look fake
They're so gosh darn adorable but like. You're telling me that hand-puppet that just squeaked at me for cuddles is a living baby? Too good to be true, but it is 🥺
Got stopped by a stranger at the public library to be asked about the baby beaver. I will never know if it was purely because I was wearing a logo shirt or bc the person saw me as staff on our last social media post n recognized me in public 😵‍💫😎

Audubon Day
We greatly admire people working towards conservation activities and this factors into our celebrations of Audubon Day on April 26 each year. Held to commemorate the birth of John James Audubon, a brilliant illustrator, conservationist, ornithologist, and naturalist, this day also recognizes the crucial work done by The National Audubon Society.
When is Audubon Day 2023?
John James Audubon’s brilliant work and legacy are celebrated on Audubon Day on April 26.
History of Audubon Day
This day is celebrated in honor of (and marks the birth of) John James Audubon, a French-American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter who was well-known for his extensive studies on American birds and their habitats. Born in Saint Domingue (now Haiti), Audubon was raised in France by his father and stepmother. He began studying and drawing birds after moving to America, continuing to do so even as he moved to Kentucky with his wife, Lucy. He began delving deeper into his hobby of bird illustrations after the store that he owned went bankrupt, even sailing down the Mississippi River on a flatboat to find new birds to paint. He was so successful that he took his work to England and published it there. This work, Audubon’s greatest work, “The Birds of America,” is now widely considered as one of the most noteworthy examples of wildlife illustration. It set the tone for future wildlife illustrations; even today, artists are measured against this book’s standards.
Years after Audubon’s death on January 27, 1851, one of Audubon’s wife’s students, George Bird Grinnell, went on to co-found the National Audubon Society in John Audubon’s memory. This society promotes and protects the habitats that support the world’s birds, and also sponsors National Audubon Day. Located in the United States, this society is one of the oldest such organizations in the world. Today, there are many branches of the National Audubon Society all over the U.S., connecting John Audubon’s name to bird conservation forever.
Audubon Day timeline
1803 John Audubon Arrives in America
Audubon arrives at his family estate in Pennsylvania, America, where he studies and draws birds.
1820 Illustration Glory
Audubon floats down the Mississippi River on a flatboat so he can paint new species of birds.
1827–1838 “The Birds Of America” is Published
Audubon's exceptional work is published during this period, containing more than 700 North American bird species with 435 hand-colored, life-size prints of 497 bird species.
1905 The National Audubon Society is Born
A student of Audubon's wife, Lucy, establishes the first Audubon Society to protect birds and their habitats.
Audubon Day FAQs
Is Audubon reliable?
The National Audubon Society emphasizes science as their basis for sound policy and action, which shows they are reliable and effective.
What is the bird society called?
National Audubon Society. Their official website states, “The National Audubon Society protects birds and the places they need, today and tomorrow, throughout the Americas using science, advocacy, education, and on-the-ground conservation. We protect birds and the places they need.”
Who helped found the Audubon Society?
John Muir, George Bird Grinnell, T. Gilbert Pearson, are the founders of the National Audubon Society.
How To Celebrate Audubon Day
Go bird watching
Create your own bird-friendly space
Draw, paint, and sketch birds
Bird watching is a very fun pastime enjoyed by around 45 million people, as per data from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Step outside for a quick (and safe) walk and observe the birds around you. You can look up details of birds you don’t recognize on the Audubon website. You can even take the fun one step further by learning about their names, habitats, and migration patterns.
Have some space in your backyard? Go ahead and design your own bird-friendly locale with native shrubs, trees, pedestal birdbaths, and more. You can hang bird feeders that you've created from plastic bottles, coffee cans, or even milk jugs for a better environmental impact. If you want to try your hand at more professional-type bird feeders, there are various woodworking tutorials online for making such feeders.
By all accounts, John Audubon loved illustrating birds. Take a feather out of his book and immortalize your neighborhood birds too. Grab a pencil and notebook and head to your bird-friendly backyard to draw the birds you see. Add in pops of color using paint or colored crayons.
Fun Facts About Audubon Day
Audubon introduced the concept of bird banding to Americas
His book is worth A LOT!
Audubon was an exceptional taxidermist.
You might recognize a particular student of his
Audubon made his money selling animal skins.
The process of attaching a small tag to the wing of wild birds to make identification easier was first introduced by Audubon in North America.
In 2010, the first edition of Audubon's book, “The Birds of America,” sold in London for a whopping $11 million.
So he could sketch birds, then, if they died, prepare, stuff, and mount them too.
Famous naturalist, geologist, and biologist Charles Darwin sat in on one of Audubon's demonstrations of his methods, as a student.
A noted hunter, Audubon's practice of selling animal skins was his primary source of income for much of his life and even funded the printing of his book, “The Birds of America.”
Why We Love Audubon Day
It brings us closer to nature
We can give back to the environment
We make some feathered friends
Many of us live in concrete jungles where the only brush of nature is a faraway tree, a kitchen garden, or a small shrub. Observing Audubon day brings us closer to nature and to what it means to be human in this world.
The climate crisis reminds us that most of us aren't that mindful when it comes to nature or conservation. Perhaps learning about Audubon's conservation attempts and the Audubon Society's efforts to study and help birds and their habitat will inspire us to make more hands-on contributions, starting by simply being more bird-friendly.
Who says no to making more friends? Only this time, we're making friends with some feathered buddies. All our conservation attempts, creating bird-friendly spaces, and even simply increasing our awareness bring us one step closer to making birdie friends and embracing Mother Nature.
