Ranking the Doraemon Movies
Tumblr media
Having watched (or rewatched) and reviewed every Doraemon movie released up to this point, the temptation to rank them is hard to resist. I’ll stress that the following ranking is of course based on my own opinions and I can’t pretend to represent any sort of consensus viewpoint. The Doraemon films have played with such a wide variety of settings and story genres that it’d only be natural for different viewers’ rankings to differ dramatically based on personal taste.
It’s striking to me that even after over 40 installments, there are very few Doraemon movies that I’d outright consider “not worth watching”. Not only that, but each cinematic storyline manages to do something that sets itself apart from the others (excluding remakes, that’s a total of 36 unique narratives to date). Considering how easy it would be for the nearly annual releases of such a long-running, popular franchise to descend into staleness and mediocrity, that is quite an achievement. No, not every Doraemon film is a winner, and I’m not going to claim that even my favorite movies in the franchise are the pinnacle of animated entertainment. However, if you enjoy family-friendly science fiction about adventure and friendship, there are certainly worse ways to spend an evening than with a Doraemon movie that has an enticing premise.
Full ranking (with links to individual reviews) below the break...
Note that for reasons given in my review, the original Nobita and the Haunts of Evil (1982) is disqualified from ranking.
From highest to lowest rated:
Nobita and the Birth of Japan (2016)
Nobita’s Great Adventure into the Underworld (1984)
Nobita and the Kingdom of Clouds (1992)
New Nobita’s Great Demon (2014)
Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 (2022)
Nobita’s Little Star Wars (1985)
Nobita’s Three Visionary Swordsmen (1994)
Nobita and the Steel Troops (1986)
Nobita’s Diary on the Creation of the World (1995)
Nobita and the Windmasters (2003)
Nobita’s New Dinosaur (2020)
Nobita and the Legend of the Sun King (2000)
Nobita in the Robot Kingdom (2002)
Nobita’s Chronicle of the Moon Exploration (2019)
Nobita and the Tin Labyrinth (1993)
Nobita’s Dinosaur (1980)
Nobita’s Dinosaur (2006)
Nobita and the Castle of the Undersea Devil (1983)
Nobita and the Galaxy Super-express (1996)
Nobita and the Winged Braves (2001)
Nobita in the Wan-Nyan Spacetime Odyssey (2004)
Nobita’s Treasure Island (2018)
Nobita’s Secret Gadget Museum (2013)
Nobita’s Great Adventure in the Antarctic Kachi Kochi (2017)
Nobita and the Animal Planet (1990)
The Records of Nobita, Spaceblazer (1981)
Nobita and the Birth of Japan (1989)
Stand by Me Doraemon 2 (2020)
Nobita and the Knights on Dinosaurs (1987)
The Record of Nobita’s Parallel Visit to the West (1988)
Nobita and the New Steel Troops (2011)
Nobita and the Spiral City (1997)
Nobita and the Green Giant Legend (2008)
Nobita Drifts in the Universe (1999)
The New Record of Nobita’s Spaceblazer (2009)
Nobita’s Space Heroes (2015)
Nobita’s Dorabian Nights (1991)
Stand by Me Doraemon (2014)
Nobita’s New Great Adventure into the Underworld (2007)
Nobita’s Great Adventure in the South Seas (1998)
Nobita and the Island of Miracles (2012)
Nobita’s Great Battle of the Mermaid King (2010)
Also, because I have to be a dork about this, I made a graph of this ranking with the movies ordered by release date. Each film is assigned a score based on its ranking, with the highest-rated having a score of 42 and the lowest-rated having a score of 1. The green line on the left separates the entries produced within the manga author Fujiko F. Fujio’s lifetime from those that came afterward, whereas the green line on the right marks the beginning of the 2005 anime reboot.
Tumblr media
It’s interesting to see where the rises and dips are (or so I think). Looks like I’m not a fan of most movies that came out during the first decade of the anime reboot! More recent Doraemon films, however, have started rising in the ranks again. I look forward to seeing this year’s movie!

TAG GAME: FAV SHOWS
"your top 15 favourite tv shows can say a lot about your personality!"
@wangmiao (who is very talented and very kind) tagged me in this lovely thing which gives me an opportunity to list my fav shows and drama of all times! taking inspiration from kun’s system, I’ll put different fonts/colors for different categories:
cdramas, kdramas, jdramas, european dramas, american dramas (with the added bonus of a bold font for queer under/overtones but more often only from yours truly’s pov, so don’t come at me: cut is for mlm & smol is for wlw)
let’s go!
winter begonia (2020)
word of honor (2021)
poirot (1989-2013)
hannibal (2013-2015)

couple of mirrors (2021)
killing eve (2018-2022)
beyond evil (2021)
the devil judge (2021)

h/ouse of the dragon (2022-?)
good omens (2019-?)
cherry magic (2020)
she loves to cook and she loves to eat (2022-?)
honorable mentions (either because I just started watching them and I really enjoy them so far OR bc I re-watched them frequently as a comfort show to rely on):
three body problem (2023) (just started, but it’s very thrilling so far *-*)
tomorrow (2002) (includes one of the few hetships I will be ride or die for)
my b/rilliant friend (2018-?) (it’s an italian series, very touching. could be gayer)
crash course in romance (ok maybe hets can have 2 spots in my heart alright)
business proposal (2022) (look. it’s not that great. couldn’t finish it. but Kim Se-jeong is amazing here)

b/erlin station (2016-2019) (i re-watch season 1 from time to time, but it do be triggering sometimes)
gentleman jack (2019-2022) (I just ogle at the pretty dresses most of the time but. neat)
begin again (2020) (in my heart this is about a lesbian woman and a gay man getting fake married for mutual benefits. it is not. it was too long for me to watch. I want Zhou Yutong to kabedon me on the daily. and she’s younger than me. I am fine)
tagging: @goaheadandflysomeplane and @fismoll7secinv and @amethystina (if they want to do it or if they just want smth to read, no pressure whatsoever!)

Thank you @dangerliesbeforeyou for tagging me, im mentioning all kinds of media bc I love to rant, I have a lot of love in my heart and I have trouble choosing just 8: (im making this on mobile hope it's readable).
Howl's moving castle (2004)
My first experience of gender envy, gender fascination, gender emulation for Howl, at a time I didn't even know that gender was a thing because I was like idek 7 years old.
Kiss of the rabbit god (2019)
A short movie, stumbled onto it bc of Tumblr. You honour, I simply love it.
Shrek (2001)
I'm not being ironic I'm very serious about this one. My mom used to braid my hair weekly when I was little and I constantly played this one, I know it by heart and I'm not joking. I freaking love this movie. Same goes for Mulan, Beauty and the beast, Charlie and the chocolate factory, and the whole Shrek franchise up to the 3rd one. (Gotta watch Puss in boots 1 and 2 tho.)
V for vendetta (2005)
This is a shout-out to 14 years old me who might have at some point based their personality around this movie or maybe they didn't, who's to say. I'm not sorry. Kinda still like it tho.
Corpse bride (2005)
There is an independent cinema in my hometown and they did run it often over the years. Bestie I don't know how many times I went to see this movie with my mother as a child. Recently learned about the Jewish origins of this myth and im a lil upset about the stolen storyline without the context. But some will say it's a Burton movie and they're right.
Valentine's day (2011)
First movie I went to see alone with my friends, I was like 12yo. Rewatched it again like 2 years ago, yeah it ain't that great but it's the memories right.
Father and soldiers (2022)
The last movie that made me cry. I hate war movies but my friends convinced me to go because it was less than 2 hours and I've been mad at movies being more than two and a half hours lately (looking at u House of Gucci, Doctor Strange 2) yeah, I cried my eyes out. It's not a perfect movie but the message is great and very moving. I don't like the English title because the original/French title directly refers the name of a group of African soldier recruited by France in its colonies during WWI -> "Les Tirailleurs" (if I remember well, the soldiers were recruited in every colonies but they left Africa from the Senegal and so all these soldiers are referred as Senegalese regardless of their actual origins). The English title is more fitting thematically wise I'll give you that.
Fulmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)
Knew about it, was recommended by a dear mutual of mine on this very hellsite and yeah, ppl keep saying it's good because it just is.
I told sunset about you/ I promised you the moon (2020-2021)
If you read my tags u know how I rant about this show often. Watched it 2 years ago thanks to someone i follow on Tumblr (but im not really sure who it was anyway if you're a mutual thank you sm). My first foray into BL (back when I didn't even know what it was) and I couldn't be happier that I started with this. I don't have enough words to praise it. (currently writing a post about it tho, stay tuned for whenever I get around to finish it (tell me if u wanna know when it's up), big up to Bad Buddy and To My Star too)
Honoured mentions bc I started making a list and had more than 8 and couldn't not mention them:
Other movies: O'brother, Love and Leashes, God's own country, Jackie Brown, The big lebowsky (idek if I like this movie but I needed something to base my personality around when I was 15yo)
The book The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo, I'm gonna keep my rant about how the English title is a misunderstanding of the book locked and not even start it.
Alice isn't dead and The Magnus archives (although they're podcasts and I haven't quite finished them, the first seasons are exquisite)
Welcome to Night Vale, I have a lot of episodes to catch up on (currently working on that) started listening like in 2016 then stopped around idek 2 years ago. Some of these episodes are masterpieces ( some I know by heart: Guidelines for disposal, Love is a shambling thing, What happened at the Smithwick House, If he had lived, and The Pilot ofc)
the ballet Swan Lake (1995, 2012) by Matthew Bourne. I don't have enough words. I'll just say it's on youtube.
.....and many more im not think abt rn
*acts surprised* this became a real long post, real quick
(That's why I take a lot of time to answer those lmao, shout out and thank you to the ppl who tag me in these and then I take a lot of time to answer)
Tagging these people and anyone who wants to do it can mention me: @sherlockig @dontbesoevil @lordmeowdemort @namelessbeing @hairbackc0llarup @comrademichael @johnlockdynamic @lovelywickedsoul @frenchsiren

Frozen 2 Rewrite
This is definitely late, but I rewatched Frozen 2 recently and honestly? It’s a lot more disappointing than I remember. I went to watch it in the theater back in 2019 when it first came out and loved it, but I think I was mostly just caught up in the hype.
The movie is very rushed and a lot of the characters were done dirty. And of course, the deleted scenes were better than the final product.
So, I decided to do what I mostly do when I see a movie/show with wasted potential: make a rewrite! This post was also the main inspiration for this
So this is what I think could be changed to make the film a bit more coherent:
* The seasonal spirits rule over the forest alongside the elements, keeping balance within the forest. But when King Runeard killed the seasonal spirits, the elements ran rampant. Because of this, there was no balance, and the forest began to deteriorate.
* Each season works with an element: Winter and Water, Spring and Earth, Summer and Fire, and Autumn and Air. Every time a seasonal spirit passes away, an elemental spirit picks a new seasonal spirit to replace the old one.
* Elsa- Winter Spirit; powers are ice and snow
* Honeymaren- Spring Spirit; powers are plants and storms
* Ryder- Summer spirit; powers are light and heat
* Kristoff- Autumn spirit; powers are harvests and fog
* Anna is the fifth spirit and serves as the neutralizer for the other spirits. She is the physical representation of love and her powers are that of the northern lights
* Kristoff is revealed to be part Northuldra on his father’s side, which is one of the reasons he gets picked to be the Autumn spirit. Another reason is that the previous autumn spirit was the reindeer king, who fought Anna and Elsa’s grandfather in the past, and Kristoff has a connection to reindeers through Sven. He also still tries proposing to Anna, but like that one deleted scene, Anna proposes instead.
* Mattias is the one who saved Agnarr and Iduna and he was taken in by the Northuldra (basically think of the alternate opening of the movie). Throughout the film, he shows his leadership skills and aids the Northuldra in saving their home.
* The Southern Isles hold the map to the Forest, due to King Runeard brokering an alliance with them and even betraying the Northuldra alongside them. And so the group recruits Hans, who has lost his prince title because of his crimes and is now a seafarer. He takes them to the Enchanted Forest on his boat. Hans reveals how his family has mistreated him, and that only his mother and one of his brothers have actually cared for him (this is info from one of the frozen books). His kingdom mocks him and he is frowned upon indefinitely
* Ahtohallan is a place that actually holds the truth to whatever the person desires, rather than just the answers to the past.
* While Anna and Elsa look for the spirits, Kristoff and Hans help with the Northuldra alongside Mattias and Yelana. The Northuldra have actually been trying to get to Ahtohallan to look for answers to save their home, but the water spirit- aka the Nokk- has blocked their path. When Elsa arrives to Ahtohallan, the Nokk creates the tsunami that will flood Arendelle, but the kingdom has not been evacuated. So, Mattias and Hans must race against the clock to help the people of Arendelle, while Kristoff stays behind to help the Northuldra.
* The main villain is the Nokk, who Elsa must pass to get to Ahtohallan. It’s actually revealed that the water spirit was responsible for the death of Anna and Elsa’s parents, stopping them from getting to Ahtohallan to find the truth about Elsa.
* Agnarr and Iduna aren’t portrayed in a fully positive light, as they’re criticized for hiding Elsa’s powers despite Iduna living with elemental and seasonal spirits.
* In the end, Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Honeymaren, and Ryder protect the forest alongside the four elements. Arendelle is evacuated and the castle gets destroyed by the flood. The Nokk has been tamed by Elsa, as she proved herself to be worthy of being the Winter Spirit. The characters help rebuild the castle, but Anna and Elsa cannot stay due to their new status as spirits. So, they leave the kingdom under the governance of Mattias, making him the new King of Arendelle.
* At first, Hans believes he’s gonna be sent back to the Southern Isles, but the gang have grown to trust him and refuse to send him back to his awful father and brothers. So, they promote him to Admiral, and he helps Mattias rule over Arendelle
This probably seems like a lot for one movie, but it’s just personal vision. Let me you what you think!

tagged by the darling @m00sebaby! rules: post 10 of your favorite comfort movies and then tag 10 people (i can't promise ten people but i CAN promise ten movies!)
In no particular order:
The Brothers Bloom (2008) surprise surprise right? I watched this first in 2012 while going through Mark Ruffalo's filmography and I fell in love with it then and is one movie that just always kinda stuck in the back of my mind all these years. I rewatched it a couple of nights ago since I'm now going through Adrien Brody's filmography and I am happy to confirm that I was right in 2012. Best movie ever tbh I'm obsessed. It's also a Rian Johnson film and i just love that i loved his movies before i even knew it.
See How They Run (2022) It's a whodunnit! There's nothing I love more than a clever little one-off whodunnit! Sam Rockwell does an English accent Saoirse Ronan is so fun and keeps her own accent Adrien Brody is a sleaze bag it's based around an Agatha Christie story it's literally everything I'd want in a movie??? Truly don't think anyone cared about this movie as much as I do which is kinda funny I won't lie
Howl's Moving Castle (2004) Even if no one else got me i know Howl's Moving Castle got me. I watched this movie for the first time last year while i was sick and it has been a comfort ever since!
Far From The Madding Crowd (2015) Everyone has a Period Piece that is Theirs. and this one is mine! Literally my favorite period movie ever I know everyone talks about pride and prejudice but THIS movie man!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wish i had more to coherently say about it but I don't all I can say is Matthias Schoenaerts.
Oceans 8 (2018) Listen. This is the best movie of the Oceans franchise. This one and Oceans 11 are the best okay. I dunno I just adore Sandra Bullock and Anne Hathaway in this movie specifically!!!!
Birds of Prey (2020) BEST SUPERHERO MOVIE EVER TO BE COMPLETELY HONEST!!!! The beginning of my love for Margot Robbie! It's just SO fun and SO exciting and I just think all comic movies should be this bright and fun and exciting and silly.
Logan Lucky (2017) Heist movies remain the best kind of movies. It's literally the FUNNIEST movie I've seen in a long time my mom and I can't stop quoting it.
Bullet Train (2022) Everyone said this was a shit movie but I can't hear them over how hard I laugh every time I watch it like is it stupid??? sure yeah but is it hilarious???? absolutely!!!! Also. Hiroyuki Sanada and Andrew Koji. That is all.
Young Frankenstein (1974) Literally. Best movie ever made. Funniest movie ever made. There's nothing else to say
John Wick 3: Parabellum (2019) It's my favorite of the franchise tbh? I've watched this one more than the others cause I just love this one the most
Tagging! @roderickstrong @werewolves @red-dipshit @saltydornishman @krischamplander
and anybody else who would like to do it! i'm always looking for new movies to watch

hey corynn! here's for the game :D
top 10 movies!
also may i already add i recently watched "nope" and "get out", directed by jordan peele and oh my god. this guy is amazing, i totally recommend anything he does 🙏 (also "twilight zone"! suuuch a good series, i keep rewatching it every time!)
hey ash! this list is about to be embarrassing, bc frankly i’m not big on movies and am far more of a tv show person. my favourite movies are what provide me comfort compared to actual cinematic value lmao. but here we are, the glorious top 10:
the hunchback of notredame
mulan
the sound of music
dead poets society
heathers (1988)
howl’s moving castle
the hunger games
harry potter and the goblet of fire
little women (2019)
basic instinct don’t judge me, i know it’s simply not good, I just have a horrible deep-seated crush on catherine trammel.
despite this list, psychological horrors are actually one of my favourite genres and are typically what i’ll go to the theatre to see. get out is truly a top tier movie, i’ve seen it a handful of times. i should get around to watching nope, bc i’m sure its just as good.
if you’re a movie buff always feel free to send me some good recs! i’ve been trying to get more into movies, mostly just watching the classics everyone has seen but I still haven’t lolol.
send me a top 5 or top 10 of anything!

stats i am cataloguing for me and me alone because i like turning these things into lists. in 2022 i logged 372 films on letterboxd in total (including 64 rewatches; excluding short films, which i dont log and simply mark as watched);
-1920s: 3 entries, 2 horror films, no rewatches. favorite first time watch was nosferatu (1922).
-1930s: 7 entries, all horror films*, 3 rewatches. favorite first time watch was freaks (1932).
-1940s: 5 entries, 1 horror films, 1 rewatch. favorite first time watches were arsenic and old lace (1944) and gaslight (1944).
-1950s: 19 entries, 14 horror films, 3 rewatches, favorite first time watches were sunset boulevard (1950), the prowler (1951), godzilla (1954), and the tingler (1959).
-1960s: 29 entries, 22 horror films, 1 rewatch, favorite first time watches were victim (1961) and mr sardonicus (1961).
-1970s: 53 entries, 38 horror films, 7 rewatches, favorite first time watches were pink flamingos (1972), blacula (1972), criminally insane (1975), and jaws (1975).
-1980s: 83 entries, 67 horror films, 21 rewatches, favorite first time watches were dark night of the scarecrow (1981), basket case (1982), christine (1983), and brain damage (1988).
-1990s: 53 entries, 38 horror films, 11 rewatches, favorite first time watches were misery (1990), killer condom (1996), the birdcage (1996), perfect blue (1997), and blade (1998).
-2000s: 44 entries, 29 horror films, 9 rewatches, favorite first time watches were little otik (2000), the happiness of the katakuris (2001), southern comfort (2001), and brokeback mountain (2005).
-2010s: 41 entries, 30 horror films, 3 rewatches, favorite first time watches were helter skelter (2012), tag (2015), good manners/as boas maneiras (2017), and tragedy girls (2017).
-2020s: 35 entries, 17 horror films, 5 rewatches, favorite first time watches were everything everywhere all at once (2022), nope (2022), skinamarink (2022), wendell and wild (2022), and glass onion: a knives out mystery (2022).
(*i would not consider freaks a horror film but im basing these numbers on whether or not letterboxd marks the film as part of the horror genre.) also worth noting favorites mentioned above dont correspond to the highest star ratings and arent the only films i really liked and loved (some notable snubs include eraserhead, akira, fargo, mad god, pretty much any film by john waters + frank henenlotter + william castle not listed that i watched for the first time this year, etc), just a few of the notable ones that have definitely stuck in my brain and i keep mentally coming back to. i am... probably not going to watch more than 365 films in 2023. im going to aim for a more normal 100 first time watches. will also TRY to actually watch the remaining hellraisers like i meant to do for 2022... at least i watched all of the ringu sequels and all 5 silent night deadly night films + the reboot, that counts for something, right...? i also REALLY want to watch more from the 50s-60s-70s range this year, especially horror from those decades but other genres (and non-genre films) as well. also ftr, most of the rewatches were of the halloween franchise (rewatched nearly every film in the series two times over). there were also three consecutive tammy and the t rex rewatches in there.
oh, and the first time watches i disliked the most were gutterballs (2008), two 4 one (2014), the haunting of sharon tate (2019), and halloween ends (2022).
