For most of us, “Grease" is a fun musical that (for better or worse) unleashed John Travolta on the world; for Louis Tomlinson, it was a gateway drug to stardom. A theater kid, Tomlinson got the performing bug after playing Danny Zuko in a production of “Grease.” Thanks to all those multiplying chills, Tomlinson went on to audition for “The X Factor" and later become one of the central figures in the insanely successful boy band One Direction. Since the group went on hiatus in 2016, Tomlinson has struck out on his own as a solo artist. His solo music still trafficks in the kind of uplifting pop music and keening ballads he cut his teeth on as a boy band singer, but Tomlinson mixes in a bit of rock and EDM to give them an edge. He’s a heartthrob, sure, but also an honest-to-God songwriter and 2022's "Faith in the Future" is his most assured collection of songs to date.

Fans at Forest Hills Stadium couldn’t help themselves when they got the opportunity to get up close and personal with singer and heartthrob Louis Tomlinson on Saturday, July 29. Andrew Cushin and Giant Rooks opened for Tomlinson with dynamic performances that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

The former One Direction star created quite the stir when he took the stage in Queens for the last stop on the current leg of his ‘Faith In The Future World Tour.’ Tomlinson made a grand entrance rocking a black tank top and stunner shades after the rain came drizzling down right before he was about to go on. Luckily, the weather cleared up just in time and the English songwriter proceeded to sing hits from his latest solo album that dropped back on November 11 last year.

Performing “High in California,” “She is a Beauty We Are World Class,” and “Out of My System,” Tomlinson had his passionate fan base holler and shriek throughout his entire set. Tomlinson’s magnetic energy made the atmosphere so sweltering that he had to pause in the middle of “All This Time” to help a fan who needed assistance in the crowd.

Staying true to his roots by not forgetting where he came from, Tomlinson also performed 1D megahits “Night Changes” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go.” He also paid homage to English rock band Arctic Monkeys by singing the moody “505.” (The Arctic Monkeys will also roll through the area on September 8 and 9 for a highly anticipated tour of their own.)

Stacked Sandwich Shop (68-60 Austin St, Queens, NY 11375) made sure to keep the hungry stadium crowd properly nourished throughout the evening with delicious, jumbo-size Philly Cheesesteaks that had to be seen to be believed. Owner Danny Azzo was on hand with new menu items to feed into the excitement that Louis created.

“We recently introduced Mozzarella Sticks and Fries. It’s a hit,” Azzo said in an interview with the Queens Gazette. “We don’t do that in the shop because we traditionally make sandwiches, but that’s been really good for us, as is the cheesesteak. Our usual popular items include the Turkey Sandwiches.”

Attendees in the front row lost control and proceeded to tear away at Tomlinsin’s tank top in a frenzied scene that was reminiscent of the peak of Beatlemania during the 1960s.

Tomlinson proudly soaked up the moment like only a true rockstar could, and performed the rest of his concert shirtless. Unsurprisingly, fans in Queens were quite content with that particular parting visual. The “Bigger Than Me” singer will pick up his tour again on August 29 when he goes overseas to play at Barclays Arena in Hamburg, Germany. '...23. Sherlock – Series 2, “The Reichenbach Fall” (2012)

The triumphant conclusion (which, as it turned out, wasn’t really a conclusion) to Steven Moffat’s initial Sherlock run was a tour de force in TV suspense, pitting Benedict Cumberbatch’s eponymous super-detective against his greatest frenemy, genius villain Moriarty (Andrew Scott). All anyone could talk about for the next two years — until the third season finally arrived in 2014 — was that devilish cliffhanger when, right at the end of “The Reichenbach Fall”, Sherlock and Moriarty meet for the final time atop St. Bartholomew’s Hospital.

Moriarty offers his nemesis-slash-wannabe-boyfriend a choice: dive from the roof to his death, or allow his closest friends and loved ones – among them, Una Stubbs’ Mrs Hudson, Rupert Graves’ Lestrade and Martin Freeman’s Dr Watson — to be murdered instead. He then pulled his cruellest trick of all, putting a bullet into the roof of his mouth, forcing Sherlock’s hand. The result, Sherlock apparently falling to his death, fuelled rampant fan speculation for months. Until he turned up spick and span in the next season, that is...

20. Broadchurch – Series 1, “Episode 8” (2013)

Murder mysteries are a game of cat and mouse for both the characters on screen and the audience at home, as both try to beat each other to nail down the killer. Bad ones make it too easy, good ones pull the wool over our eyes and great ones change the rules entirely. After seven hours of Broadchurch hunting down the possible killer of 11-year-old Danny Latimer, we knew we’d leave hour eight with an answer, expecting a final-minute reveal born from some intense action sequence that would mask the tragedy in adrenaline.

Instead, halfway through the episode, the killer, Joe, our lead detective Ellie Miller’s (Olivia Colman) husband, gives himself up, sick of being consumed by guilt and shame. It knocked the classic whodunnit structure on its head, changing the focus from the murderer to the fallout of his crimes. There’s Danny’s parents’ grief, which is finally felt in all its horrendous weight now that there are no longer question marks over the case, the town’s reckoning with the aftershock of such a harrowing crime, and Ellie’s life imploding before her eyes. Even though many viewers had worked out that Joe was the murderer, the real shock came from the horror of what it meant to be right...

16. Fleabag – Series 2, “Episode 4” (2019)

Throughout its two seasons, Fleabag became a beacon of rare relatability. It was a show about a woman actively not trying her best, self-sabotaging to bury emotion and hoping that none of it ever found its way to the surface. In its fourth episode of season two, it finally did. The episode is a bait and switch of sorts, as Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s titular Fleabag takes rejection from her hot priest crush (Andrew Scott) as a challenge, aiming to get him to relent on his spiritual allegiances and give into some good, old-fashioned carnal sin. For so long, it seems as if it’s not working, despite the pair dancing around the kind of sexual tension that feels like lightning in a bottle. But then she finds herself alone with him in the church late at night. He has had a few drinks. What starts as Fleabag in control ends with her walls breaking, the vulnerability she feels with the first person she’s connected with since the death of her best friend Boo corroding the armour that’s kept her feelings of guilt and shame and sadness locked away. He commands her to “kneel” and, well… you know the rest...

11. Fleabag – Series 2, “Episode 6” (2019)

Bringing back Fleabag didn’t seem like a good idea. Its beautifully constructed first season felt like the classic case of a one-and-done, particularly because of its gut-punch ending (the reveal that Fleabag had slept with her best friend Boo’s boyfriend shortly before she had died by suicide). And we’ve seen worse shows tarnish their legacies with ill-thought-out second runs. But, as evidenced by its dominance on this list, Fleabag series two went on to eclipse that first outing by every metric. This finale is a devastating conclusion to Waller-Bridge’s tragic romcom, with Andrew Scott’s sexy priest ultimately choosing God over love. Before that, we get to enjoy her father’s wedding to her ridiculous stepmother (Olivia Colman), her sister Claire (Sian Clifford) finding love with her Finnish namesake and a deeply moving and funny sermon from the hot priest (“Love is awful. It’s awful”). And, boy, that ending. The grim, bus-stop bench, the CGI fox, the priest’s devastating reply to her “I fucking love you”: “It’ll pass.” I defy you to see a fox at night on the streets of London and not think of it. But somewhere in here there’s a glimmer of hope, a sense that we’re leaving Fleabag better off than we found her...

9. Doctor Who – Series 3, “Blink” (2007)

Every episode of Doctor Who leans on existential wonder, conjuring concepts of the far reaches of time and space as the Time Lord navigates existence. “Blink” is a fascinating non-linear episode that introduces arguably the most terrifying monster yet – The Weeping Angels, lightning-fast creatures that can send someone through time with a single touch.

The perspective is switched from the usual Doctor and companion to place you in the shoes of Sally Sparrow, a normal girl roped into the world of the Doctor. She is tasked with deciphering the Doctor’s cryptic messages as he warns of the Weeping Angels. However, they turn into stone statues if they are laid eyes upon by a living creature – hence the iconic phrase “Don’t Blink”.

This anxiety-inducing episode prompts you to think at every moment what would I do? Every little action could prove to have deadly and unchangeable consequences. The prospect of being whisked away into another time is an unbearable thought. It is one of the best episodes of the show as it exemplifies everything wonderful about Doctor Who; evoking horror, mystifying time and space, as well as drawing upon emotion as the results of these life-changing stakes steadily come to fruition...

3. Fleabag – Series 2, “Episode 1” (2019)

“This is a love story,” says Fleabag (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) from the floor of a restaurant bathroom, dabbing at her bloody nose. So begins the opening episode of Fleabag’s triumphant second season, which turns a family dinner into a tense negotiation, punctuated with cigarette breaks for gasps of air and set to the operatic thrum of classical music.

Arguably the great achievement of the episode is managing a seamless recap of the previous season, reintroducing all of the faultlines within the family while adding a new face to the table in the Priest (Andrew Scott). The tension ratchets up as an annoying waitress hovers in the wings, Fleabag resists the temptation to bite over and over again, and her sister Claire (Sian Clifford) looks as though a vein in her temple might blow like a pipeline from the effort of holding her emotions in. Andrew Scott’s performance throughout the season is astonishing, but the charm he brings to his introduction is irresistible. Among a table of family members who don’t get her, here, finally, is an equal to tempt Fleabag into opening her heart fully. You can see it in her face as she shrugs him off during one of those cigarette breaks, and he says, in that sing-song voice: “Well, fuck you then.”...'

Dean Jagger (November 7, 1903 – February 5, 1991) Film, stage, and television actor who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Henry King's Twelve O'Clock High (1949)

In the 1960s, Jagger increasingly worked on television appearing in The Twilight Zone ("Static"), Sunday Showcase, Our American Heritage, General Electric Theater, Dr. Kildare, The Christophers, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

Jagger achieved success with the television series Mr. Novak (1963–1965), receiving Emmy Award nominations for his role in 1964 and 1965, as well as the California Teachers Association's Communications Award, along with star James Franciscus, in 1963 for his portrayal of high-school principal Albert Vane.

Jagger's appearances in the 1960s included episodes of The F.B.I. and The Fugitive, as well as the TV filmm The Brotherhood of the Bell (1970), with Ford, and an episode of The Name of the Game.

DUA LIPA - "TRAINING SEASON"

Leah Isobel: Every time I try to write this blurb, I stare at a blank screen for 30 minutes before closing the page. I start with how the instrumental choices here invoke classic pop forebears -- flamenco guitars that, in this context, feel like Madonna; descending piano lines that recall ABBA -- and I come up short. I start with her affected enunciation, leaning into the simulated emotion ("I try to see my lovers in a gühd light") and the, uh, being-British ("I hope it hits me like an aurrow") that are her two trademarks, and I come up short. I start by comparing "Training Season" to "Houdini," which did ultimately grow on me, and I come up short. I just don't have anything to say about this song; it's so taut, so perfectly and unremarkably muscular, that my attention bounces right off. So it's a Dua Lipa single. [5]

Katherine St. Asaph: Dua Lipa is the human incarnation of the [6] to [7] range. Here we have some exotica married to the amusing idea that the main attraction of a vertiginous, libidinous love affair is "conversation overload." I don't know -- that line, and the surrounding lyrics like "he's straight talking to my soul" and "are you somebody who can go there?", come off so dating podcast-brained and thus absolutely safe that they make the instrumental sound overheated and unconvincing. Jackie Powell: Red hair. Leather outfits. Vocal growling -- it happened right here during Dua Lipa’s performance at this year’s BRITs. The disco of “Dance the Night” and Future Nostalgia has officially run its course. While I had questions about how convincing Lipa’s previous single “Houdini” was of her transition into “psychedelic-pop” and “Nineties rock,” Lipa makes a much more cogent argument for her new era with “Training Season.” With main collaborator Caroline Ailin, Lipa constructs an extended metaphor that equates dating to a high-stakes track meet. The influences of Kevin Parker and the Brit pop-rock of Oasis and Blur that Lipa grew up with are much more apparent -- the heart of the song is a conversation between a guitar and a bass during the verses, in addition to a rhythm acoustic guitar that accents the chorus. The bridge -- which is a full bridge, not just a bunch of vocalizations -- is a melodramatic but compelling build that brings everything into complete focus. Her lyrics continue the extended metaphor about running, but finally we’ve arrived at the meet itself, and a classic piano serves as the person who formally tells the runners to take their marks and go. Throughout “Training Season," Dua Lipa wields a type of command that's edgier than her previous work. Interesting doesn’t have to be toxic, as she told Brittany Spanos of Rolling Stone, and "Training Season" is her way of responding to the toxic masculinity that has become part of the story of the pop rock music she’s influenced by. Ian Mathers: Ah yes, another installment in the Dula Peeps Men (Still) Ain't Shit extended cinematic universe. From magic to sports, where will we go next? Farming? Food preparation? I do wish this was as fun to listen to as "Houdini," though. [6]

Taylor Alatorre: The anti-chemistry between Dua Lipa and her Stereogum-bait producers is even more evident here than on "Houdini," and I find it strangely engrossing, albeit with the balance tipped toward "strangely." Getting spins remains the goal, but there's this constant tug-of-war regarding the best strategy for getting them. Kevin Parker tends toward memorable, if incongruous moments of harmonic tension and build-up, while Danny L Harle is presumably the one responsible for those geometric guitar plucks and the antiseptic bubble that is the chorus. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa is there, plugging her vocals into the the designated slots, feeling less essential to the character of her own song than ever. Such are the dangers of outsourcing your sonic re-invention to the indie gentry. [5]

Andrew Karpan: I’m less of a cynic, and I think the idea of burning through various versions of Kevin Parker’s “Less I Know the Better”-type beat through the gasoline shimmer of hyperpop disco (TM) is as fine enough an idea as any to sell the Dua Lipa project -- the value proposition of which remains largely unchanged, even as it continues to be twisted into slightly fewer, but more deliberate, directions. Her voice can always bend, but always the same way, beating on, against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the ’clurb. [5]

Dave Moore: I'm not sold yet on Dua Lipa's chorus-agnostic era. As a perennial Lipa skeptic I thought the stylistic recession on "Houdini" worked for her, and I suppose it works about as well here, but the song is bereft of that one's small pleasures. It sounds like she's rubber-cementing random pop hooks together, whereas before it at least sounded like she was using chewing gum. [6]

Oliver Maier: Something like "Lay All Your Love On Me" is straining to muscle out from beneath Dua's tepid synth-funk, but there's never any real danger it'll break free and liven things up. [4]

Joshua Lu: There's a deadliness to "Training Season" that few artists can execute as well as Dua, with her coquettish voice slinking around you like a snake does its prey. But where the song should grow in intensity, it instead chooses to shrink, and where it should throw a curveball, it instead aims for simplicity — why does the chorus end with such a standard fade-out that resets all of its momentum? The song has all the foundations of a great pop single but is too satisfied with sounding like a decent album track. [5]

TA Inskeep: Her singles have a habit of sneaking up on me. "Levitating" improved by hearing it constantly out in the wild (I don't generally do terrestrial radio, but it was unavoidable). "Cold Heart"'s mash-up eventually sucked me in, and I can't get the short sharp (un)shock of "Houdini" out of my head (it's an [8], just a sparkling pop single). "Training Season" won't join that class, as it has nothing to it but a mild EDM build (ca. 2008) in the chorus that just -- ends. And Lipa sounds even more bored than usual. [4]

Hannah Jocelyn: This would have been a [10] if it came out shortly after Currents; it's still pretty great in 2024, with much more lively production than "Houdini" and genuine risks like that harsh synth towards the end. I'm on board with this direction! [7]

Nortey Dowuona: I wonder if it burns Caroline Polachek up that Dua Lipa will have the big mainstream hit album she will never have and that Danny L Harle is involved with it. I would advise her to listen to Martina Sorbara's 2002 album The Cure for Bad Deeds and accept her niche status instead of fighting it. It might just lead her to eggs over easy. [6]

Dorian Sinclair: So, I read a lot. It’s my primary leisure activity. I read books that profoundly move me, books that open me to whole new ways of thinking, books I immediately recommend to everyone I know. But I also read a steady stream of 5.5/10 genre novels. They’re an important reset between more impactful works: faultlessly competent, reasonably engaging, instantly forgettable. This, to me, is Dua Lipa. [5]

Aaron Bergstrom: Feels like it should work but comes off as listless, directionless, joyless. It's a mild to moderate case of Training Seasonal Affective Disorder. [4]

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: Training season? Guess it makes sense that she sounds so out of breath in that chorus then. [6]

I don’t think it’ll be Willy. Too close to genitalia, and if Meghan didn’t want her son being Earl of Dumbarton because kids at school would call him dumb, she’s not gonna go for “Willy.”

I have my bets on either Steve or Daniel/Danny. Steve was William’s nickname at St Andrews so his friends could talk without paps listening in. Danny Collins was William’s code name was Duke of Cambridge. (Kate’s was Daphne Clark. The Queen’s was Sharon.)

Since Archie could’ve been George’s code name, I wouldn’t be surprised if she went after someone else’s code name.

Harry didn’t know why, and when he asked, Danielle replied, “this job isn’t for everyone.” Now, as she was closing for the evening, Danielle was washing glasses with the front door locked. When she first started working at the Garrison six months ago, she was directed by Arthur to never close with the door unlocked.

Suddenly there was banging at the front door and Danielle paused for a second, wondering if she should open it. Then the banging continued. She walked over to the door and unlocked it. Tommy burst through the pub, past Danielle and all the way to the middle of the room where he organized a table and multiple chairs. Danielle didn’t say anything to him as they were still in the midst of their riff. Danielle could tell that Tommy was nervous, “Are you expecting trouble,” She asked.

“Ya,”

“At this hour?”

“Midnight is as good as an hour as any,” Tommy checked his gun to make sure it was loaded.

“What the hell is going on?”

“When the St. Andrew’s bell strikes midnight,” he put the gun on the bar counter, “Two IRA men are going to come through that door. They want the guns, Danny. And when they get what they want, they plan to kill me,” he walked behind the bar towards Danielle, “It's your job to stop that from happening.”

Danielle sighed and grabbed the gun, “what do you need me to do.”

“I just got the message myself, they want to meet here alone,” Tommy walked to the back of the pub and pointed to the back room, “you’re going to be in that back room, and I’m going to be sitting there,” he motioned to one of the chairs he had set up, “when I make a toast, come out with the gun, you don’t shoot, you just point, I’ll do the rest.”

“Will you kill them?”

“No, the police want them alive.”

“The police know about this?”

“Just point, alright?” Then the pair heard the bell strike midnight, “go on, go,” Tommy pushed her towards the back room, grabbed a bottle of rum and took his seat.

Danielle heard the two men come in but she couldn’t make out all of what was being said. Then she heard Tommy say a little louder, “May you be in heaven for half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead.”

Danielle walked out of the room with her pistol raised. She recognized one of the men as the Irish man who was in the pub yesterday, he had a gun pointed at Thomas. He then shot at Danielle and she ducked to avoid his fire.

When she stood back up she saw Tommy lunge across the table at the man with the gun. I guess the plan didn’t work then, she thought. She raised her pistol and shot the second man who was still pulling his gun out of his jacket. She then turned her attention to Tommy and the other men who were fighting on the bar top. She couldn’t shoot the man without also harming Tommy. She went to grab the man's neck to pull him off of Tommy and the man let go of Tommy with one arm and slapped her across the face. She fell, hitting her head on the floor.

When she came to, she saw that the man had his arm around Tommy’s neck and his cap pulled over her face. She couldn’t find her gun and instead lunged towards the man. She wrapped her hands around the man's neck trying to pull him off of Tommy and when that didn’t work she dug her fingers into his eye beds, “Ahhhh the man yelled,” and he let go of Tommy.

Tommy elbowed him in the balls and the man let go of him all together. Then in the blink of an eye Tommy was on top of the man, beating him with his fists. Danielle saw that Tommy wasn’t stopping regardless of the fact that he was no longer fighting back. Then she saw her gun on top of the opposing table. She grabbed it and walked back over to the two men. Tommy was still beating the man and when he went to grab one of the spit buckets, she pointed the pistol at the man’s head and pulled the trigger.

Tommy dropped the bucket and looked down at the man. Then he got up and looked at Danielle who was still holding the gun, “give me the gun, Danny, the coppers will be here any minute,” with shaking hands she held it out to him, “It's better if they see me with it and not you,” she did what he said.

He then took a step closer to her and grabbed the back of her neck. When he did so she gasped, still shaking from what she had just done, and what she had witnessed, “Now you’ve seen me,” Tommy said.

“And you’ve seen me,” Danielle replied, and Tommy pulled her towards him and put his arms around her.

They were interrupted by three coppers who walked into the pub. Danielle knew one of them was a sergeant, judging by the patch on his sleeve, “you were supposed to come on the sixth chime,” Tommy said, as he stormed towards the sergeant, “you were supposed to come on the sixth fucking chime!” Tommy yelled. He leaned against the bar, and for a second Danielle swore he looked defeated, “they refused to surrender. They fought well; they were brave men.”

The sergeant walked over to look at the two men, he then motioned to the one on the floor, “well he looks like he was killed by a wild fucking animal. Still this never happened.”

“Get the bodies out of here,” Tommy commanded coldly.

“Ah, right, are they making the lady uncomfortable,” the copper turned and directed the other two cops to clean up the mess, “I’ll leave you two love birds to it then eh.”

“Come on Danny,” Tommy said, he put his arm around her and together they started walking towards the flat.

Once they were out on the street Danny took out a cigarette and lit it. With shaking hands she took a drag. She didn’t think she’d ever see anything like that again, not after France.

A few minutes later she passed the smoke to Tommy. He accepted it, took a drag, and then passed it back to her as they arrived at the flat.

“I’m sorry,” he said before turning to walk back down the street. Danielle wasn’t sure if he was sorry about what had happened that night, or just sorry in general.

The Next Morning

Tommy and Finn stood in the middle of the graveyard. Danny Whiz-bang’s fake grave had been robbed in the night, and the guns had been stolen.

“There’s going to be trouble now Finn,” he put his hand on the boy’s shoulder, “You look after yourself, do you hear me,” the boy nodded, “I’m going to be going away for a while,” the man started walking towards the Garrison, “but there’s something I need to do first.”
