Tamam miyiz? / Are We Okay? (2013)
Director: Çagan Irmak
Stars: Aras Bulut Iynemli, Deniz Celiloglu, Asli Enver
Temmuz is an openly gay sculptor living at a flat with his dog in Istanbul. He lives a bohemian lifestyle and has a happy go lucky, carefree, eccentric (such as believing in good luck charms) character, frequently distracting him from his work as a children's book illustrator, and eventually leading him to be abandoned by his boyfriend via e-mail. He is given solace and affection by her wealthy mother, who is fully supportive of him, and best friend and co-worker, Beste. In the meantime, he keeps seeing a young man in his dreams, who repeatedly calls him for help and rescue. One day he runs into this guy while getting on the bus, who is accompanied by his mother, and helps them get into their home as the young man was born without limbs. From then on, two lives would collide into each other, starting a brotherhood full of discoveries and mutual help.
This movie really wasn’t my cup of tea, which surprised me because I thought it would be exactly my type of a movie! I like movies with a humanitarian touch to them, but this was just too bleak for me for the most part. It was too real, too harsh, it just shows too many ugly sides of life for me to handle at once. For example, it features a guy without limbs living a life of poverty with his caring mother - and as if that wasn’t enough - his father is a violent drunk who hates him and beats his mother. I mean, I know situations like those unfortunately exist somewhere, but that doesn’t mean I enjoy watching it and emotionally involving myself in a movie for 2 hours to see people suffering. Ihsan also repeatedly asks Temmuz to kill him because he can’t stand living life as he is, which I found pretty morbid but could understand to a certain extent. I’m only giving this 3 stars because I want to reward the movie for not having a tragic ending and I was also thrilled to see the abusive father got what he deserved at the end.
