Night Key (1937)
"Now, listen, Steve. Twenty years ago you robbed me of the patent rights of the system that you're now using. Perhaps there was some excuse for that: because it gave you wealth, success, position, all the things that tempt one man to rob another. But now that you have everything and I have nothing, what possible reason is there for you to do this to me again?"
#night key#lloyd corrigan#1937#boris karloff#tristram tupper#jack moffitt#william a. pierce#warren hull#jean rogers#alan baxter#hobart cavanaugh#samuel s. hinds#david oliver#ward bond#frank reicher#edwin maxwell#george cleveland#george humbert#charles c. wilson#light hearted karloff vehicle which doesn't really deserve the sci fi label it's been given; yes‚ BK is an inventor of slightly fantastical#gadgets‚ but mostly this film is concerned with big business skullduggery with a side of organised crime. Karloff‚ as he often did‚ is#playing older than he was but he's very good and highly sympathetic as the doddery old prof. there's lots of good performances here‚ from#Jean Rogers' charming daughter to Warren Hull's romantic interest (much less tiresome than the usual role fillers in these movies) and#special mention to Hobart C as a delightfully seedy smalltime crook who attaches himself to BK like a stray dog. the only dud note is#Alan Baxter's weirdly monotone turn as the big bad‚ lacking any of the threat the character needs. the ending is twee and silly and there's#some (understandably) shaky fx work but this is genuinely a very fun time and a pleasant change from the usual Karloff vehicle of the era#one jarring moment: there's a very brief moment where a plot related news bulletin is heard on the radio‚ and as soon as it's finished the#news announcer begins to turn to the 'news from Spain' but the radio is switched off and the film moves on before we hear any more; this is#1937 remember‚ a moment of global tumult and thick in the gathering storm of the years to come but this is the only moment that the real#world is allowed to intrude into the charming and slighty silly world of eccentric inventors and sinister crooks

who is your favorite old AIO character? It can be anyone, from Lucy to Donna to Richard Maxwell!
Unquestionably Bernard Walton! Odyssey's resident window-washer, grouch, troll, storyteller, and hilariously reluctant cousin. He's just the best.
Of course, there's others I love too! Tom Riley was awesome (gosh, I'm missing his character just thinking about it). Edwin Blackgaard and Walter Shakespeare were great, too. And honestly, a number of the saga specific characters were really just amazing and I wish they became more regular parts of the cast, like Buck and Penny did after Green Ring.
My favourite kid character was probably a super obscure one, like Digger Digwillow or Irwin Springer. Lawrence was fun, though!
Thanks so much for the ask! I've not thought enough about Odyssey for too long, and I'm very glad for the return :)

Round Two Part Five - Match 34
It's corruption in the police force versus corruption in the Catholic church! Yes neither of those are truly accurate descriptions of these episodes. Police Lights is coming in with a close win of 127 votes, while Confession had a bit more of a lead last round with 139 votes.

Magnus Archives dudes ranked by how much I, an aroace lesbian, would want to fuck them
Jonathan Sims - 7/10
Fairly middle of the road academic, would be the worst to make breakfast for the day after, but gets point for being a mess.
Martin Blackwood - 1/10
It's good for others but the teddybear vibes dont do it for me, i'm sorry
Tim Stoker - 9/10
He seems fun and I think he'd understand that this is no strings attached, we'd have a good time.
Elias Bouchard - 6/10
Evil old men are fuckable, but loses points for being the worst.
Gerard Keay - 3/10
I wouldn't fuck Gerard, I'd make him good food and let him stay at my place for as long as he needs.
Jurgen Leitner - 5/10
Look. He gets a worse rap than he deserves. That said he loses points for probably talking too much during sex.
Michael Crew - 7/10
I like his powers and he seems like a fun guy to fuck, plus scars are hot but seeing them also involves seeing a semi-buff dude shirtless which is like my biggest turnoff.
Michael Distortion - 6/10
I am a monsterfucker but i don't like his voice.
Peter Lukas - 3/10
Bear DILF is a great vibe but i feel like he'd wanna do it in Lonely and i'm cold at the moment so that sounds awful.
Oliver Banks - 3/10
He'd be an 10 if he hadn't said anything to trigger my thanatophobia halfway through. He'd make good breakfast after though.
Adelard Decker - 7/10
Saved more people than Gertrude, I'd fuck him just for that.
Eric Delano - 9/10
DILF
Michael Shelley (pre-Distortion) - 3/10
Another one that just doesn't do it for me, but he's cute enough.
Mikaele Salesa - 10/10
He has sugar daddy vibes, I'd fuck him for a new ps5 and he'd pay my bills.
Breekon & Hope - 10/10
Worse ways to spend a weekend than being spitroasted by buff delivery men with sexy voices.
John Amherst - 1/10
He has every std
Maxwell Rayner - 2/10
I mean, he's hot enough but next to Manuela everyone is a 1. This is the one time i let my lesbianism influence my judgement
Jordan Kennedy - 6/10
The ants are a turnoff but I respect a working man
Jared Hopworth - 10/10
I DO NOT NEED TO JUSTIFY THIS ONE
Tom Haan - 4/10
Cannibalism is hotter when women do it, I lied about not letting my lesbianism decide.
Robert Montauk - 8/10
Dilf AND serial killer? My panties are already wet
Trevor Herbert - 4/10
Points for being the same as Robert but he was mean to Daisy so fuck him in a non sexy way
Simon Fairchild - 4/10
His optimism just gets to the point of annoying, dude shut up about what a lovely day it is while im sucking you off!
Edwin Burroughs - 7/10
I wouldn't need possession to corrupt him
Raymond Fielding - 5/10
Middle of the road, I wouldn't say no but i wouldn't initiate.
Robert Smirke - 10/10
This is 100% because i study architecture and fucking Robert Smirke would give bragging rights forever.

Irish dress history sources online:
A list of sources for Irish dress history research that free to access on the internet:
Primary and period sources:
Text Sources:
Corpus of Electronic Texts (CELT): a database of historical texts from or about Ireland. Most have both their original text and, where applicable, an English translation. Authors include: Francisco de Cuellar, Luke Gernon, John Dymmok, Thomas Gainsford, Fynes Moryson, Edmund Spenser, Laurent Vital, Tadhg Dall Ó hUiginn
Images:
The Edwin Rae Collection: A collection of photographs of Irish carvings dating 1300-1600 taken by art historian Edwin Rae in the mid-20th c. Includes tomb effigies and other figural art.
National Library of Ireland: Has a nice collection of 18th-20th c. Irish art and photographs. Search their catalog or browse their flickr.
Irish Script on Screen: A collection of scans of medieval Irish manuscripts, including The Book of Ballymote.
The Book of Kells: Scans of the whole thing.
The Image of Irelande, with a Discoverie of Woodkarne by John Derricke published 1581. A piece of anti-Irish propaganda that should be used with caution. Illustrations. Complete text.
Secondary sources:
Irish History from Contemporary Sources (1509-1610) by Constantia Maxwell published 1923. Contains a nice collection of primary source quotes, but it sometimes modernizes the 16th c. English in ways that are detrimental to the accuracy, like changing 'cote' to 'coat'. The original text for many of them can be found on CELT, archive.org, or google books.
An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish By Joseph Cooper Walker published 1788. Makes admirable use of primary sources, but because of Walker's assumption that Irish dress didn't change for the entirety of the Middle Ages, it is significantly flawed in a lot of its conclusions. Mostly only useful now for historiography. I discussed the images in this book here.
Chapter 18: Dress and Personal Adornment from A Smaller Social History of Ancient Ireland by P. W. Joyce published 1906. Suffers from similar problems to An Historical Essay on the Dress of the Ancient and Modern Irish.
Consumption and Material Culture in Sixteenth-Century Ireland Susan Flavin's 2011 doctoral thesis. A valuable source on the kinds of materials that were available in 16th c Ireland.
A Descriptive Catalogue of the Antiquities in the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy Volumes 1 and 2 by William Wilde, published 1863. Obviously outdated, and some of Wilde's conclusions are wrong, because archaeologists didn't know how to date things in the 19th century, but his descriptions of the individual artifacts are worthwhile. Frustratingly, this is still the best catalog available to the public for the National Museum of Ireland Archaeology. Idk why the NMI doesn't have an online catalog, a lot museums do nowadays.
Volume I: Articles of stone, earthen, vegetable and animal materials; and of copper and bronze
Volume 2: A Descriptive Catalogue of the Antiquities of Gold in the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy
A Horsehair Woven Band from County Antrim, Ireland: Clues to the Past from a Later Bronze Age Masterwork by Elizabeth Wincott Heckett 1998
Jewellery, art and symbolism in Medieval Irish society by Mary Deevy in Art and Symbolism in Medieval Europe- Papers of the 'Medieval Europe Brugge 1997' Conference (page 77 of PDF)
Looking the part: dress and civic status and ethnicity in early-modern Ireland by Brid McGrath 2018
Irish Mantles, English Nationalism: Apparel and National Identity in Early Modern English and Irish Texts by John R Ziegler 2013
Dress and ornament in early medieval Ireland - exploring the evidence by Maureen Doyle 2014
Dress and accessories in the early Irish tale, ‘The Wooing of Becfhola’ by Niamh Whitfield 2006
A tenth century cloth from Bogstown Co. Meath by Elizabeth Wincott Heckett 2004
Tertiary Sources:
Medieval Ireland: An Encyclopedia edited by Sean Duffy published 2005
Re-Examining the Evidence: A Study of Medieval Irish Women's Dress from 750 to 900 CE by Alexandra McConnell

i'm still thinking about names, so. palatawan nerdy prudes
stephanie "stef" ngsinco - lauter means "lute player", and the "ng" in ngsingco means lute. i think the lauters are old money, like the youngs and the murrays, so i spelled their chinese surname like it's from the spanish colonial era (think of the cojuangco family). it also lets me make a pun about how she's a singko bc her grades are terrible (a 5 [cinco/singko] is the worst grade)
peter "pete" jakolino - his other nickname is milo bc that's what i wanted to name him back when he was still Hot Chocolate Boy and i wanna keep it. maybe just ted calls him that? or maybe that's another name the bullies call him bc he has low blood sugar and they caught him snacking on milo powder. jakol-ino is making the same pun as spank-off-ski
ruthwina ayah "rutay" malate - fleming comes from flanders which means "waterlogged land", and malate means "marsh" and is also the name of a place. i didn't have anyone with a classic filipino portmanteau name yet, so i picked her. (in my mind her mom's name is ruth and her dad's name is edwin, so: ruthwina)
ricardo "karding" magbanua - lipschitz is a place name, but instead of trying to match it in meaning, i wanted to give him something that the bullies could use to tease him, like shit-lips. magbanua means "villager" and the bullies call him mag-banyo, "go to the bathroom"! because he's stinky!
grace dalisay dimaano - dalisay means pure, and dimaano is "one who cannot be touched/affected/injured". it's technically in a "cannot be harmed in battle" warrior sort of way but now it's also in a chastity way. her parents call her lasya (from grace/gracia). when people call her chastity instead of chasity, what i'm gonna do is change the accent from dimaáno (cannot be touched) to dimaanò ("can't take a hint", but also, euphemistically, "cannot be fucked")
bonus:
maxwell macatangay - jägerman means hunter, and macatangay means "the one who can snatch away". also the bit when he calls himself the "jägermeister" is "maka-tanduay" (tanduay is rhum)

"Despite her beating out Jan Maxwell, my beloved, I feel no lingering bitterness because Jayne Houdyshell is one of those divine character actresses who elevates every project she's in. Her Music Man nomination came as a wild surprise, but looking back, it just makes sense. She was exactly what we needed post-reopening."

"Once again, I am asking which of you is going to be contributing to the Send DroughtofApathy to London this Summer to See SJB in Kiss Me, Kate Fund? They released a little promo for it, and damn she looks good. Why is everyone going to the West End to do their shows? Do them here so I can see them, dammit. Who needs the West End and their strange tastes anyway?"
