kris and susie’s relationship to me is like. i dont want to say anything definitive bcuz i dont like saying ANYTHING definitive when it comes to kris and their personal life as thats... not for me to hc in my eyes. but like....... i feel like there’s a possibility that that dynamic, at least from kris’ end, goes a lil beyond friendship. like i’d call them gay and tease them over the idea of having a crush on susie if i were their friend but i wouldnt actually pressure them into feeling that way if they dont. does that make sense.

Krisis makes it a goal to meet up for nightly patrols on rooftops. “It’s only natural,” Wilson had explained, way back on their first week of crime-fighting together. “It’s a perfect vantage point! Any hitmaaaaauuuuhhhh—criminal worth their salt would go to a roof first. We can cut them off before they get up to no good.”
Zali is either the first or last to arrive on the scene. It depends entirely on whether the rendezvous building has an elevator or not.
He wasn’t so lucky this time, but did find a wannabe-villain hiding out in the stairwell, so he couldn’t complain. The fight was over before it even started. Zali collected the contraband along his belt, somehow blending into his loose pants. He had defeated a small-time smuggler, with a backpack, quite literally, full of all that and a bag of chips. The smooth cloth tended to wrap around the sealed bag.
Tall high heels clicked up the stairs in unintentionally dramatic fashion as Zali climbed. This was the real reason why he tended to be late, but tardiness is 20% of the superhero appeal. The homies would get it.
Wilson’s silhouette is crumpled at the edge of the building as he observes the city below. His goggles shine bright with the city, casting artificial strokes of light onto his face and suit. Meanwhile, Vanta is difficult to see through the night horizon, coat fluttering as he stands guard.
He perks up at the sound of the roof door and Zali’s clicking heels. His hands rest on his hips. “If it isn’t Zali. Where were you, we were waiting!”
“For almost twenty minutes, no less!” Wilson says and stands between Zali’s quick apologies. “We were about to look into alternative contact methods, like if your comms died or something.”
“Sorry,” Zali apologized again. “I was in a fight.”
He explains the (rather uninteresting) fight in record time. The homies get it. After that, Wilson and Vanta catch him up on what he missed while he was gone. Wilson plots out a route while Vanta shares more on what he and Wilson have been up to, namely with the other members of NIJISANJI while they were on holiday from A.S.H.
“That’s cool,” Zali said. “Wilson, where are we dropping?
“What is this, Fortnite?” Wilson pauses his watch to snicker and turn.
Zali stands next to him, taller than ever over Wilson’s crouched form, gloved hands between frozen steel as he points a pistol between Wilson’s eyes.
He lurches back but Zali thought his approach through. He has Wilson pinned. If the ex-hitman were to move he’d be between a bullet and fifty stories to ground level.
Vanta shouts. “Hey, Zali, why do you have a gun, what the fuck?!”
The gun is heavy in Zali’s hands, and stark against the fabric. However, Zali smiles softly, as if he were discussing the weather and not holding a best friend at gunpoint while the other stands helpless.
“I got it from my fight earlier today,” he explains. His voice is even. “It would be irresponsible to leave a bad guy with a deadly weapon, right?”
The gun repositions. Wilson stares down the unfeeling pit of the barrel.
“Why do we always become Kris?” Zali asks.
Wilson’s mouth runs dry. He glances to his left. Fifty stories down. “I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”
“Do you remember Krisis on Krisis?”
Vanta steps forward, analyzing the situation. “Of course I do. Among Us, or Millie’s birthday party?”
“Why, the homie kiss, Vanta.”
The wind takes up the space that words can’t as all three heroes go silent.
“I remember the time you both defused a bomb together,” Zali continues. “You had spaghetti. What did you share along with that spaghetti?”
It slowly dawns on Vanta. “A homie kiss.”
Zali smiles a little sweeter. “Why did you homie kiss Claude before me, Wilson?”
“Well, it wasn’t really a homie kiss—“
The gun presses to Wilson’s forehead. He leans back a little further. Fifty stories.
“It was more of a… homie chip?” He tries.
“Yeah, that’s right.” Vanta takes another step. “The spaghetti counted because our lips met. I pointed right and pointed left.”
“But it was just a chip,” said Wilson. “Nothing more than that!”
Zali looks down at Wilson, helplessly wide eyes making contact with gold, the sparks of the city reflecting off of Zali’s gaze. The coldness of the metal is beginning to turn warm where it connects with Wilson’s skin.
Desperate, Wilson keeps going. “There was only one big chip left. I would have done it with you and Vanta if there were more big chips.”
“Is that so.”
Zali lowers himself to Wilson’s level. The pistol is still trained on him, but the medic reaches into the flowy folds of his pants, where the charms on his belt mark indents on the fabric. With his back turned, he can’t see Vanta creeping up on him, but as he rifles through his supplies, the other heroes start to make the connection. The potion bottles are familiar, but the bagged contraband is not. A locked-together pocketknife perches between the tassels, the same one the smuggler used as a weapon earlier.
Zali finds what he’s looking for. He pulls out a bag of Doritos.
Wilson screams.

Falkner: Spinaraks?
Bugsy: Spinaraks it is, then.
Falkner: Wait, that’s not what I meant—
But they were already pouring him a brimming glass of Spinaraks.

Falkner: The opposite of  "the Donphan in the room" is "the Venipede in the room—" something that’s not actually an issue, but everyone is freaking out about.
Janine: As someone who specializes in training Poison-type Pokemon, I can assure you that a "Venipede in the room" is in fact a very big issue.
Janine: If you have knees, you are valid.
Falkner: Homophobes have knees, too.
Janine: Not for long.

Janine: I almost dropped my Pokedex on my soft carpeted floor but thank Arceus I have lightning fast reflexes and was able to slap it into the wall instead.
Clair: The term girlfriend implies the existence of a girlfoe. That is a service I am willing to provide.
Ethan: Hey did you hear that Joe contracted ligma? They had to do a surgery on his updog.
Pryce: Who’s Joe? What’s ligma? What’s updog?
Ethan: *inhales*
Whitney: Non-binary people don’t owe you androgyny.
Falkner (talking about Bugsy): One does owe me money, though.
Morty: Oh sorry, I fell asleep while I was waiting on you to make me a sandwich!
Falkner: Go back to sleep AND STARVE.
Ethan: I heard my brother [Red] say he was going to Dairy Queen, so I snuck in his car and he has no idea I’m here.
Ethan: He asked his friend what he wanted and I popped up from the floor and said “I was thinking about a milkshake." I have never heard two teenage boys scream louder.

Ethan: I am confident in your ability to figure it out from the clues provided.
Ethan: We can’t mansplain manipulate malewife our way out of this.
Silver: Manslaughter it is, then.
Ethan: NO
Ethan: Rules are made to be broken.
Falkner: They were made to be followed. Nothing is made to be broken.
Kris: Uh, piñatas.
Lyra: Glowsticks.

Miguel O'Hara: What's his deal
Ok so ever since the theatre realease of Across the Spiderverse back on May 31st (yes in France we get our new releases on Wednesday, this is why the early videos on YT had French subtitles btw in case you were wondering), I have been deep in it. Like. DEEP. The main offender for that being Miguel O'Hara, who immediately started living rent free in my head and he is clearly not leaving any time soon. Anyway, this is completely out of topic for my blog but I do what I want so let me rant about the aforementioned Depressed and Overworked DILF because we love men with problems in this house.
WATCH OUT FOR THE SPOILERS (and unhinged ramblings that totally sidetrack).
Ever since the release of ATSV, a lot of videos have been available on YT to dissect everything, and of course I have been having an intense focus on character analysis, because that movie is absolutely brilliant at establishing character arcs and presenting new Spiderverse characters in one of the most efficient, thrilling and engaging way I've ever had the pleasure to witness. We've been blessed with Gwen's heartwrenching character arc (and she deserves none of the hate she's been receiving, but don't get me started on that), Hobie more like Homie in the span of 5 minutes on screen... And Miguel, who blesses us with his ego, anger issues and massive trauma while also dropping bits of a gentler side - but only bits of it. And I have been extremely normal about Miguel, since he absolutely doesn't tick all of the boxes of the Tickle My Fancy list.
I have been ranting about him in many YT comment sections for more than 2 months now (hi Purple Kisseokjin and Schnee lol), but with the digital release of the movie, I finally remembered I have a Tumblr blog where I can yell about Miguel all I want, so here we are now. Now where do I start...
First Part: Miguel's character design
I've overall been highly impressed by the various art styles given to the Spiderverse cast, and how it reflects who they are and where they come from. Miguel in particular hits many soft spots for me for a good reason: his association with architecture and industrial designs, which are topics I'm interested in (especially architecture). As such, I will begin this study by analysing both the character and environmental designs for Miguel and Nueva York, and how the depiction of Nueva York 2099 reflects the state of the narration as well as how Miles and Miguel feel and think - following the same logic as what we get to see with the use of watercolours on Earth-65B, during Gwen's sequences, to express emotional states. A mandatory tangent will be made in regard to Miguel's themes as well, because they fall in line with my arguments for the character and background designs.
There are some main points to take into account when it comes to anything related to Miguel's design: straight lines everywhere, light rough sketch lines, gouache tones. Where do we find these elements? In architecture design. Older ones made in a traditional way usually have gouache for the colours (although ink and watercolour are also present), and the light sketch lines and straight lines are present to study the perspective, as shown in the example below:
Tumblr media
Feels familiar? Well, will you look at that:
Tumblr media
One of the reasons why I am giggling everytime he appears on screen is because of these delightful sketch lines. Looook, it has the same style as architecture concept art! Even better, from the mouth of one of the character designers, Kris Anka: NO CURVES!
Tumblr media
Even his face has sharp angles (he truly has the most powerful cheekbone game), look at the sketch lines:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And you know what else has a lot of straight lines and sharp angles? Nueva York.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look at this. Look at this. It's even in the title card when Miles arrives at the Spider Society.
Allow me to make a slight detour to explain what we are looking at while looking at the architecture of Nueva York 2099. What we are seeing here is a blend of brutalism and eco-brutalism. Brutalism is characterised by its materials, steel and concrete, as well as its intent: in a post-WW2 world, architecture is seen with more pragmatism and values function first. Eco-brutalism is a branch deriving from Brutalism, and aiming to reintegrate nature in the concrete jungle in order to create an harmony - albeit a fully man-made one.
The concept artists took (eco-)brutalism and ran away with it for a massive Solarpunk vibe, which makes the whole setting very interesting considering that in the comics, Nueva York is also very much a futuristic dystopia. Yet, using (eco-)brutalism to have us experience the place for the first time along with Miles is a great way to give a sense of awe by way of what we envision as the future to be now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The interesting bit about it is how (eco-)brutalism and the adjacent solarpunk aesthetic are associated with a rather hopeful future, one where humanity manages to harmonise its modern way of life with a new development of nature. It feels like a haven mixing the relaxing greens of nature with the sharp lines of brutalism architecture, and that's how Nueva York feels on first sight. Similarly, Miguel O'Hara's first appearance leaves quite the memorable impression: tall, with broad shoulders and everything about him being sharp (it's even exagerated in the comics part), even his web.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Fun fact time: ball pens have initially been designed for architecture and industrial drawings, they are fantastic tools to draw neat lines and create a nice variety of shading as well based on how you push on the pen and how you hatch/cross-hatch to modulate the intensity of the shading. You know who and what could be drawn solely with a couple of ball pens? Check the answer below.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also shines at the Guggenheim by showing how competent he is, with a certain benevolence on top of it: he initially rejects Jessica Drew's suggestion of adding Gwen to the lineup (yes Miguel, you don't want her because she's buddy buddy with Miles), yet saves her from being shot by her own father and ends up getting her on board as she finds herself with nowhere to go. It certainly leaves a similarly good first impression as the bright and harmonious first sight we get of Nueva York.
However, the environmental and character designs both give us a deeper look into Nueva York and Miguel, and it's certainly not as pristine as it seems. Just as Miles is about to discover the truth of the Spider Society, he enters a darker lab and Hobie keeps warning him, until they reach the area where Miguel is pretty much playing Big Brother by watching them through some of his screens:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd argue that the darker space is a callback to the comics, in which Miguel becomes sensitive to light after his genetic mutation, But it is the very opposite of what we've been shown when introduced to the Spider Society: soft whites and greens are traded for deep blues and the stark orange of multiple screens as well as the tone on Miguel's own costume - the bright orange light of the screens is even reflected on him. This is not a pleasant place, and everytime we see it (the Go Home Machine area has a similar style, albeit more organic in the creepiest way, as displayed above on the 4th screenshot), we witness Miguel having outbursts of anger as well. There is also something that feels disconnected from humanity in the sense that it's colder and more methodical in the design, either with all the sharp angles and stark contrasts, or the alien design of the Go Home Machine.
It's an impression that can also be found once we discover the underbelly of Nueva York, while Miles is being chased:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here, we also have dark tones with stark neon lights that create the impression of a colder, less caring place, that points to the dystopic nature of the place. The impression is created with great efficiency not only by intense contrasts, but also by using the classic codes for a dystopic society: the solarpunk tones can be found in other stories such as the video game Mirror's Edge (classic case of solarpunk hiding a dystopia), and of course the darker cyberpunk aspects are a staple of the Dystopic Futuristic Society, that goes as far back as the first Bladerunner movie at least, and that can also be found in movies, series and games such as the Ghost in the Shell movies/series and the Cyberpunk TTRPG/video game (which pretty much gave its name to the genre) - I'd even argue we could go further back in time for the references with classics such as Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. It matches with the atmosphere of the Spiderman 2099 as well, which is set exactly in that type of darker, cyberpunk dystopia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I argue that there's something coldly methodical in Miguel's design and, by extension, Nueva York 2099's design as well. And it is delightfully balanced through an initial positive introduction of both, before being broken down for a darker turn later on during the movie, as it matches Miles' own amazement-turned-disappointment throughout the sequences in Nueva York when his initial desire to belong somewhere is brutally turned on its head by the very persons who could have given him that sense of belonging he was seeking.
Interestingly, even the soundscape for Miguel, "Spiderman 2099" and "Lab 2099", expresses the underlying coldness of Nueva York 2099 and Miguel's own scientific, methodical approach to problems. As explained by Youtuber Azcona in his Miguel O'Hara Suite playlist:
"I'd argue that it has the same tonal resonance that the Prowler theme in the first movie had, though is less villainous and dreadful as that theme. Miguel's theme is a five note synth line that sounds akin to an alarm or siren. It's blaringly loud, but is also used for more calm dialogue scenes in an effective way. The words that come to mind when describing the musical soundscape of Miguel O'Hara is "methodical", because no matter how loud or abrasive his theme gets it has an underlying feeling of coldness and efficiency. This is further shown through a repetitive synth ostinato that plods and chugs during a lot of his scenes/scenes involving the multiverse at large. It's reminiscent of Blade Runner in tone and it's mechanical nature, and I think it suits someone as jaded and distant as Miguel. Not only is his theme alarming and efficient, but also efficient in it's cold, electronic soundscape and melodies."
And this very methodical, cold tone is itself used during the infamous Train Chase and Miguel's on-screen mental breakdown... But more on that in the next part!

Review: Live From Arena Stožice
can you tell i’m on winter break and have nothing better to do?
1) Sunny Side of London
• What can I sayyyyy! we’ve had this live version out for a while now and it’s probably the only JO song that I 100% prefer live. It’s MADE for a live performance, for an audience that will have fun with it and participate. Great opening choice too! 9/10
2) Gola
• Felt much more energetic than the studio version! Gola isn’t my fave but I definitely like it more now that we have this live version! 8/10
3) Bele Sanje
• I think the best part about Bele Sanje are the little nuanced things like the “lalalala” and some of the electronics which I can’t really hear in the live version BUT I can’t complain….I loved it, especially the extended guitar part at the end (which im assuming is Jan lol) and the boys going absolutely CRAZY on backing vocals!
4) Plastika
• THE TRANSITION FROM BELE SANJE TO THIS?!?! HELLO?!?? MY SOUL ASCENDED!!! I can hear all of the electronics and all of the energy! I love that you can obviously tell that Plastika is a fan favorite! Bojan’s emotion in this live version (especially on “ne morem se odločit al se jočem al smejim) just took it to the next level imo. 10/10
5) Proti Toku
•Not much to say about it, I think it’s definitely more fun than the studio version but it just seems quiet to me??? idk?? 8/10 tho, it’s still a banger
6) Dopamin
• THIS!!!! I LOVE LOVE LOOOOOOOOVE THIS!!! I see clips of Dopamine on tiktok or something and it sounds more aggressive than in the studio, and im SOOOOO glad it sounds that way here! It’s such a cute, happy song but it’s so…HARD! Guitars were going CRAAAAAAAAZY, but we could still hear some of the little electronic bits. Byfar some of the best sounds of the album. 20/10
7) Padam
• I cry, I cry every time. Love the audience in this one and Bojan’s voice?!?? angelic. 9/10
8) Demoni
• WE FINALLY HAVE THE DEMONI SCREAM ON STREAMING PLATFORMS! The ONLY thing I think you have been better was just volume, i don’t feel the impact as much in this song as i do in some of the others (which is not the case for the studio albums). Loved how they kind of slightly played around instrumentally with the beginning and the end. All my homies love Demoni. 10/10
9) Katrina
• Ok so…..Katrina is by far my favorite Joker Out song so by default, I think this version is great. There was a lot more tension this go around which, in my mind, fits nicely with the lyrics. HOWEVER…… I think I hyped this up too much in my mind. It was still very very VERY good (and the sheer quality of Jan’s solo was just impeccable, which is what I was hoping for), just missing something that I can’t really put my finger on. 10/10 tho, stream Katrina for clear skin.
10) A sem ti povedal
Ok ok ok hear me out . I am an A sem ti povedal binge streamer, the studio version is what I think musical perfection is. Every time i see a live performance of it, it’s always tweaked in some way, which hurts my little studio-loving heart. I’m not gonna lie and say the trumpet solo was bad or anything, in fact I thought it was quite beautiful, but I don’t think it should have taken the place of the heart-melting intro in the studio version. HOWEVER, I got over that pretty quickly, with the acapella introduction and the buildup into the A-MA-ZING bridge. Personally I think Bojan’s little changes to how sings this one really made a difference, especially since they went ahead and changed like….most of the song anyways. Still, i was transported to another dimension with this one even though I am still a pretty strict A sem ti povedal purist. 9/10
11) Omamljeno telo
Fun, Fun, Fun! One of my favorite JO songs! It almost felt too short! 9/10
12) Kot Srce, Ki Kri Poganja
Martin girlies WYA?!?! EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS WAS PERFECT! from ACTUALLY performing Kot Scre, to releasing it in the album, to the evergy, and ESPECIALLY to having Matic and Martin, who absolutely ATE THIS UP!!! Did anyone else become a Kot Srce, Ki Kri Poganja girlie after this? because I certainly did! 15/10
13) Metulji
• Upon seeing a 6 minute version of Metulji i was very excited. Figuring out that most of it was straight up guitar was definitely something that grew on me after a few listens. One of my favorite things about the studio version of this song is just HOW Bojan sings (it just scratches my brain) and it still does that in this album, and it’s even MORE emotional! Instrumentally, I LOOOOOVED the little tiny changes they made, it really was so beautiful, and also tense, and a little scary! it’s crazy what you can do with sounds. 10/10
14) Vse Kar Vem
•ALSKDSKDKFJ I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! I dont speak Slovene but I FELT EVERY SINGLE WORD!!! Ofc knowing the lyrics helps, and all of that just made me …FEEL! I WAS FEELING FEELINGS! I could feel the audience feeling feelings!!!! What I don’t see talked about enough is how Jure SLAYED that drum break like LORD HAVE MERCYYYYY. 10/10
15) Barve Oceana
• BRAVE Oceana absolutely killed me…but speaking of Jure absolutely eating the girlies up, the drum break in this was just PERFECT. Also I loooooved being able to hear Nace during the first few verses, I never realized the bass part was so fun! AND THE BACKING VOCALS? THE AAAAAAAA’s? PERFECTION! 10/10
mr. maček i love you
16) Ngvot
• KRIS GUŠTIN YOU WILL ALWAYS BE FAMOUS! ALWAYS! We all knew he could throw down with the songwriting, and it’s just so nice to be able to hear him sing it too! Ngvot is a classic, nothing much to say about this live version! 8.5/10
17) Vem Da Greš
• also another OP fave here and another beautiful transition into this from Ngvot! Also not too much to say about this one other than I felt it wasn’t as impactful as the studio version, like the buildups were just for nothing because the actual hits were lacking power. Also the faint children’s choir-esque sound was throwing me off? I heard it it Metulji too and idk what it is! 8/10
18) Ne Bi Smel
• part 3 of Jure absolutely killing it. Now THIS was powerful! So much energy, especially compared to the already super-fast studio version. Bojan’s voice was definitely one of the highlights (it is in every song, but especially here!)!
19) Ona
• to be honest, i’m not rocking with this jazz band version of it. The sultry sax intro was a great addition, setting up the plot of the song and everything, but this big brass thing throughout the song was not it for me. I think what I love about the studio version is the angry electronic things we hear, and we do hear it here, but it’s almost cancelled out by the brass? idk man, it’s a song about crying your eyes out every night because of a girl and it just wasn’t feeling like that! 7/10, I still love Ona
20) Tokio
• The audience did their part in this one! Another great one, I have no complaints. 10/19
21) Umazane Misli
• God i love this one! I think this had the perfect amount of experimentation in it for the song to sound like itself while also feeling fresh. Personally i would have preferred if there were no mics or instruments on during the part with the girl’s voice and just had the whole audience sing the whole thing, but that’s just a stylistic, nitpicky thing lmao. 9.5/10
22) Novi Val
• I cried, i’m still crying. 15/10
23) Carpe Diem
• Carpe Diem NEVER fails! This was the absolute best song to close out with in EVERY way! It’s fun with a sappy ending that wraps up the album and the show perfectly. I would have sold all of my limbs to be there during that. 20/10
