HAPPY BIRTHDAY CAROLINE MUNRO!
Caroline Munro (born 16 January 1949 in Windsor, Berkshire) is a British actress and model best known for her many appearances in science fiction and action films of the 1970s and 1980s. According to Munro, her career took off in 1966 when her mother and photographer friend entered some headshots of her to Britain’s The Evening News “Face of the Year” contest.
Tumblr media
“I wanted to do art. Art was my love. I went to Art School in Brighton but I was not very good at it. I just did not know what to do. I had a friend at the college who was studying photography and he needed somebody to photograph and he asked me. Unbeknownst to me, he sent the photographs to a big newspaper in London. The famous fashion photographer, David Bailey, was conducting a photo contest and my picture won.”
Tumblr media
This led to modelling chores, her first job being for Vogue Magazine at the age of 17. She moved to London to pursue top modelling jobs and became a major cover girl for fashion and TV ads while there. Decorative bit parts came her way in such films as Casino Royale and Where’s Jack? (1969). One of her many photo ads got her a screen test and a one-year contract at Paramount where she won the role of Richard Widmark’s daughter in the comedy/western A Talent for Loving (1969).
Tumblr media
1969 proved to be a good year for Munro, because it was then that she began a lucrative 10 year relationship with Lamb’s Navy Rum. Her image was plastered all over the country, and this would eventually lead to her next big break.
Tumblr media
Hammer Films CEO Sir James Carreras spotted Munro on a Lamb’s Navy Rum poster/billboard. He asked his right hand man, James Liggett, to find and screen test her. She was immediately signed to a one-year contract. Her first film for Hammer proved to be something of a turning point in her career. It was during the making of Dracula AD 1972 that she decided from this film onward she was a full-fledged actress. Up until then she was always considered a model who did some acting on the side.
Tumblr media
A string of fantasy and horror roles followed, including starring turns in Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter (1973), The Golden Voyage of Sinbad (1974), At the Earth’s Core (1976),  The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), StarCrash (1978), Maniac (1980), The Last Horror Film (1982), Faceless (1988), and The Black Cat (1989).
Tumblr media
By the 1990s Munro had decided to focus more on her family, daughters, Georgina and Iona, and husband George Dugdale. However, since 2003 Caroline has renewed her interest in acting and has appeared in a number of film and audio productions. Since 2021 Caroline has been presenting the hit television series The Cellar Club for Talking Pictures TV.
Tumblr media
The title First Lady of Fantasy was given to Caroline by journalist Steve Swires, who wrote many Starlog and Fangoria (@FANGORIA) articles on the actress in the 1980s and 1990s.
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday Caroline!

Book 22 of 2024: The Scandalous Confessions of Lydia Bennet, Witch by Melinda Taub
This was basically tailor-made for me. A P&P retelling where Lydia is a witch? And Kitty is a CAT?? And Wickham is an ancient demon but also hot??? AND Georgina Lambe from Sanditon is in this!! Sign me the fuck up, this was great, 10/10, no notes.
What to read next: The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow, for another historical fantasy that's just a delight from start to finish.

Band of Brothers
Valerie Harmon - Once a bright-eyed university student, fascinated by all things art history, Valerie's life in France is thrown into chaos by the Nazi invasion, severing her from her family back in Vermont. A chance encounter with an Easy Company Captain reignites previously forgotten hopes of ever seeing home again, but even this is not without its trials.
Camille Whitney - Following the death of her youngest brother on the Western Front, Camille puts her nurse training to use and accompanies Easy Company on their journey through Europe. Utterly family-oriented, she finds new brothers in the men around her, but none could replace the one she has lost.
Marcie Clark - Growing up in San Francisco threw Marcie into the path of Joseph Liebgott, her childhood sweetheart and first love. But after circumstance and prejudice push them apart, it takes a war to reconcile their friendship as what it really is - a romance that never truly faded.
Faye Warren - An aspiring journalist, driven by the legacy of her father, Faye finds frustration in her line of work, constrained by the expectations thrust upon female writers. In a last act of desperation, she chases a story all the way from London to Nazi-occupied France, hoping to find an opportunity amongst the men of Easy Company.
The Pacific
Anna March - After her family is rocked by horrendous tragedy, Anna finds herself permanently changed by the time her childhood friend, Eugene Sledge, returns from war. Both irrevocably scarred by the events of the last few years, they must come to terms with the new people before them whilst still struggling with old, long buried feelings.
SAS: Rogue Heroes
Diana Fayed - Adopted out of poverty by an infamous army general, Diana’s whole life has revolved around proving her worth and becoming the soldier her father believes she can be. Overlooked and dismissed by her superiors, she finally finds a place among the unruly ranks of the newly formed L Detachment, a group that will prove to be her biggest challenge yet.
Masters of The Air
Frances 'Frankie' Bevan - A qualified aircraft mechanic and member of the WAAF, Frankie has spent her entire youth fascinated by all things mechanical. Her latest posting at Thorpe Abbotts promises to be no different from her previous jobs at first, but the 100th Bomb Group are nothing like the RAF pilots she's used to, and Frankie's about to learn that the pain of war will find you no matter where you are.
Georgina 'George' Aarons - Frankie's best friend and a telegraph operator at Thorpe Abbotts, George's budding romance with the pilot Curtis Biddick was only ever going to end in tragedy.
Susie Lamb - A Captain and driver in the Auxiliary Territorial Service, Susie has a reputation for being perhaps the most disliked woman in all of Thorpe Abbotts. However, as the sixth of eight children from a near-impoverished family, it becomes alarmingly clear that the answers to her present lay in her past, and she's not quite the woman everyone thinks she is.
Gwen Dastrup - Chicago native and daughter to Danish immigrants, Gwen's dreams of becoming a published historian are dashed by the breakout of war, and she volunteers with the Red Cross, becoming a clubmobile girl at Thorpe Abbotts. But when she catches the attention of John Brady and RAF Captain Michael Fenton, she is torn between choosing the man she loves and the easiest route to achieving the career she's always aspired to.

Lambs To The Slaughter - Shasta/Georgina Stanton
A/N: Day 22 for @fluffyfebruary
Tumblr media
Sacrifice. Once Georgina had thought that Shasta, that Julia, sweet Julia, was crazy asking for such big sacrifices, but now… now she sat in the circle, surrounded by the five sisters, Shasta cradled close. The drink is taken slowly, one woman at a time and as they fall Georgina whispers the needed prayers, the needed pleas to goddesses she doubts will forgive her, she had to try. Now, as Shasta coughs and shudders awake, she moves slowly, scooping the woman up in her arms to carry her to bed, leaving the fallen sacrifice behind. “Please live, Julia…” Soft whispered pleas, her promise to save Julia is still true, even as she feels her eyes dampen with unshed tears when Shasta, her own dear Julia, wakes slowly, soft eyes taking her in before her lips curve upwards into a soft smile. “Georgina…” “I’m here love…” It's enough. It had to be enough but Georgina knows she will sleep better with Shasta in her arms. She will happily call the woman Shasta if she wants, but she knows, deep in her heart, she will always love Julia the most.

"A Friday conversation with God"
I look out my window; Each ray of light reaching out to touch me, A mother’s attempt to first warm a babe born to flesh and blood -  A weeping lamb in search of his shepherd.
“Are you afraid of me?” I ask the air, a prominent call to a presence I have not yet felt comfort in accepting, “that I cannot love you the way you intended me to?” He breaks his silence, blissfully unaware of the flame and iron that brand my throat -  A lamb’s cry to care, scorched to his skin  a million moments of safety and sacrifice, all for his name.
I seethe at it; a child’s first beating left bare on untouched skin; pink and raw, an innocence I had so long craved. “Do you get sick of it?” I felt Him ask, with a love so torturous I begin to itch. “Have I made you so unwell?”
“No,” I reply, “i cannot grow tiresome of what we are.” Sunshine touches me again, Soft and silent, a father’s pride passed on through a fleeting glance over the dinner table. “i am carved by your blade, am I not? But if you are not careful, Lord, I will die by it too.”
Light touches me once more, but not with love, with understanding. A being, all almighty in his power and pride, Staring down at a sheep wounded.
For a moment,  I ask myself if in our conversation -  All my suffering and rage, If he was reminded of his own Son, carved open tenfold -  A loneliness wrapped in my mother’s favourite childhood blanket, My father’s scent of fresh linen worn into his very being -  For sins he did not commit?
Fingers lodged inside my throat, I choke and call to him again -  Presence felt, but no answer. Had a believer ever debated with God before? Had the sheep ever called the Shepherd to prayer? He sits with me now, Upon my childhood bedsheets, Pawing at my holy church -  Ground cursed and blessed in blood he born me to do so. I look at him then, his mortal shape no different from my own, Blasphemic and beautiful on its own.
“Do I remind you of him?” I ask, shaking with a hunger so ravenous I yearn to bite. “You do.” He replies, yet I do not look over, betrayal laced like a young girl’s first introduction to womanhood by her mother- Grief and fury shared as one. “it is exhausting being your creation, you have cursed me twice over.”
“Have I?” He ordains to speak, Sunlight sucking back through my window, “has my image become too much for you?”
I look over then, Ready to scatter my ashes directly into his palm, Knife at the throat, an apology uttered to no one in particular. He is not there -  A shape of grace and envy stained still into my cushion.
Sunlight returns to me once more -  A soft stinging of a stroke on my bare cheek; Not an apology, But an understanding.
I bare the image of Father and Son alike; And all the grief gifted generation to generation. He understands, without rage or shame, That I am like him, That I must like upon him, All the treasures and treacheries he has endured, So that He is not lonely upon a throne of light, But that he is seen and understood.
As He exists for His first time, too.

Day 16 I found my garlic limit!
I had a restless sleep, I imagine from the late coffee yesterday.  I was dreaming I was narrating the Netflix movie Scoop (Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell were in my head!) and I woke with a fright when I heard “head north east on Rua do Oceano Índico”, out of my iPhone. For some reason google maps went off, it was 11.30pm! WTF 😂
Today I booked the train to Albufeira, excited to see this party town!  I wasn’t sure if a bus was an option to Old Town.  The staff member at the station said "outside" but on looking at the times and route I wasn’t hopeful, so I ordered a Bolt.  I noticed a couple of young women looking at the timetable and walking away so I offered them a lift.  I said "I’m going to a coffee roaster first and I’m not sure how close it is to Old Town but you’re welcome to join me".  They looked a bit tentative at first and then decided to jump in 😂 We headed to Al-Gharb, I did say there was no obligation to have coffee together, but they wanted to and then paid for mine, and their “famous” banana bread while I was in the WC.  So kind of them.  Delightful young women, Julie and Rike, studying to be teachers, living 3 hours from Hamburg.  I’m sure they thought I’d taken speed, I couldn’t stop talking 😹 We discussed travel, teaching, my kids, Julie’s siblings, Rike’s job in a public paying school, creepy men at their Airbnb in Lagos, living in a post Covid world. I set them free and had a second coffee and then headed to some earmarked pottery and cork shops, lunch and gelato.
I purchased a lovely cork necklace, discounted to €10, from a baby/kids store that had a small table of jewellery. I managed to discern that it was indeed handmade locally by a woman who no longer makes jewellery as she has arthritis. I also purchased a locally made ceramic bowl that I'll use to eat my granola while I'm holidaying and beyond. I could have bought so much more, but on this trip I don't want to worry about breaking things over a longer period of time!
I’d pre-booked lunch using The Fork app and was a tad disappointed after sitting down to hear the waitress telling me the three octopus dishes were not available (no catch for that day). I looked at the menu and used google translate, saw there was squid (so I could eat that), I already knew the cod was frozen (as I'd asked at another restaurant) and I could have carapaus (mackerel) and even though I don't eat beef, pork or lamb, if I had to I could have the pica-pau (woodpecker!). I thought this must be a mistake and I assumed quail or similar. On her return the carapaus was not an option either, it was going to take too long to make, que?  I told her I had time! "Would an hour be enough?" She walked away, came back and said “it’s not possible”.  I asked about the woodpecker and she laughed, no it was some beef dish, sounded like dried or carpaccio* (after sleeping on this, maybe it’s smoked 🤔). I ended up with squid, in loads of oil and garlic and I asked for sweet potato.  The waitress said “don’t you like cheese?” Of course I like cheese, so thinking what I ordered was not enough I got cheese and the usual slightly dry bread (no wonder there's oil, it's to make the dry bread edible! Sadly when it came out it looked like a heart attack waiting to happen, melted with more oil and garlic.  The rosé was good, the sweet potato never came, but a salad was on my bill. I should have asked for the salad 😂 I did say there was way too much oil and garlic and the waitress said "this is the way in Portugal"...OK!
I didn’t need it, but after some more wandering in the heat, I had it anyway...gelato, from Georgina Gelato - pistachio, salted caramel and snickers!
Heading back in the Bolt the temperature gauge showed 31°.  The lovely Bolt driver said summer temperatures are usually around 32°, and it’s only Spring 🥵 We had a fantastic conversation about ice cream after I asked him how long he’d been living in the Algarve (I've noticed all of the Bolt/Uber drivers aren't locals). He’d been in Albufeira for nearly four years, coming to help his mum make and sell ice cream. She’d studied the art in Italy.  They only sell to a shop called Sailor. I did see that shop, but it didn’t feature as highly as Georgina on the google ratings. I should have got that guys number. I wonder can I track him down on the Bolt app, or maybe that will get me banned and that wouldn't be good, as I now have 15% discount on my next five trips.
I got on the right train to come "home", I triple checked!
Tomorrow I collect my tiles 🤩
*It got the better of me so I googled it, sounds delicious for those who eat beef. Pica pau is a traditional Portuguese dish consisting of small pieces of fried beef in a light gravy made with beer, garlic, oil, chili, and mustard. The dish is usually consumed as a snack, accompanied by a few glasses of cold beer and bread for mopping up the sauce. When served, pica pau is traditionally topped with olives and pickled carrots and cauliflowers. The name of the dish means woodpecker, because you pick at the beef with a wooden toothpick. Pica pau is a staple of the Portuguese tascas – tiny little restaurants.

The Gilded Age, Ep 2x05 – Close Enough to Touch (Spoilers)
Going to quickly recap this episode.  Not because I’m behind, but because this episode was so phoned in by the writers.  I’m sorry, but there was nothing in this episode that was entirely or almost entirely predictable.
Larry is behaving foolishly, so he’s being sent back to New York.  Once there, he has a chance encounter with Marion.  And, again, it’s clear that the writers are doing a slow burn with these two characters.  The scene shows they are both compatible for each other, but neither of them realize this yet.
Also, Larry is put to work by George.  It turns out that George is one of the trustees overseeing the building of the New Brooklyn Bridge; but there seems to be some question about the man overseeing the project.  George can’t look into it as he has to deal with the possible strike in his factory.  Larry is asked to check it out.  Larry goes to the man’s house and quickly deduces that it is his wife who is actually running the project.  As it can’t be known that a woman is in charge (as people might not use the bridge because it was built by a woman and how can a woman know such things?}, they have to keep up the ruse.
Miss Beaton is asking around about Oscar’s intentions.  Oscar, meanwhile, is able to convince Miss Beaton to allow him to go meet with her financial advisor.  There Oscar finds out about how Miss Beaton’s money is being used in an investment opportunity.  One that Oscar, even though he doesn’t know what it is and the advisor is quite vague in his answers, decides to purchase a small stake in.  This is the one plot that I’m not sure where it’s going simply because I’m not sure if Oscar is being his usual greedy self or if he’s using money to figure out if Miss Beaton is getting duped.
Peggy and Fortune continue to work on their story in Alabama.  They are invited to go the restaurant that is owned by one of the student’s mothers.  Of course, this is where Peggy gets a taste of what life is really like in the South.  It’s clear this is supposed to be a place of refuge.  I say supposed to be, as this is based on the real world and, unsurprisingly, there are many folks who don’t allow that kind of comfort.  During the meal two white males, one who seems to have been the enslaver of the mother, come in and start harassing the patrons.  This becomes too much for Fortune, who demands that the two men stop.  He even gets into a shoving match with one of the men.  Of course, he quickly realizes that this action has put Peggy and himself in a lot of danger.  The two end up hiding from a mob in a barn.  After the mob passes, in the heat of the moment, the two kiss.  I admit I don’t know much about the history of Fortune; it is possible he was known to have relations with other women other than his wife.  But if that isn’t the case and this is something they’re just making up for drama, eh no.  Don’t do that.
Ada tells Agnes about how she’s getting married…in a week.  Agnes disapproves and tries to get everyone not to attend the wedding.  She even tries to get the Rector to not marry her sister.  In the end, everyone goes to the wedding…including Agnes.  As quickly as they are going through this storyline, I fully expect Luke to be dead by the end of the season.
Bertha is about to host The Duke and everything must go perfectly.  Enter Ms. Winterton and her grade B villain schemes.  Long story short, as she knows the party will mean they will hire temporary cooks, she has a man she knows get a job on the inside.  She also enlists the help of Peter, one of the waiters at the Russel house, to help.  And their plan may have worked had they not LITERALLY DONE EVERY ACT OF SABATOGE INFRONT OF THE REST OF THE STAFF!!  The staff immediately know what happened, know who was behind it, and quickly save the day.  Meanwhile, like a lamb to the slaughter, Georgina is paraded in front of The Duke.  We know what Bertha wants.
