Number one may be of shock but it was the first movie I remember loving as a kid, and even now, I can watch it in different languages and STILL understand what is going on purely from memory! Now I also didn't include My Hero Academia in this, although I have been obsessed with it lately, and that is purely because I actually have not read or watched it yet! I have gotten my knowledge and love for it through osmosis and fervent research!

Gundam Wing was the first anime that I fell in love with, and Endless Waltz was the first anime movie I watched and bought. Naruto/Shippuden was my first obsession, and the source material for my first fanon Yaoi ship.

The Hobbit was my first full-length novel. I read it in the 4th grade, and after taking a test on it, I got 17/20 questions right, which was a surprise for my teachers!

MDZS and TGCF are the first Danmei/Donghua I got into, and that was literally about 6 months ago!

There are plenty of other media I like. The Magic School Bus was my favorite cartoon growing up. Then there is Emergency (circa 1970's). I like the Alien franchise a lot. Mobile Suit Gundam SEED is another anime I love. I am also a big fan of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives from the Food Network. Card Captor Sakura is good to watch. There are countless others, the ones I listed are simply the most influential ones to the person I am now.

I totally agree with you about rewatching it because even when I fell in love with it, it was always more the fanon than actual canon that was the best. 😉

I mean, if you held a gun to my head and demanded I explain the plot ... I could give you a one-sentence gist of it but, to this day, I still don't fully know what happened in that show. It was always about the boys for me!😬🤣😭

The dub was pretty bad. There was also a common pattern back then where English speaking anime fandom would have gotten access to maybe the first 5-10 episodes of a big series through fansubs or the first couple of VHS tapes or DVDs being out. Maybe we’d have 15-20 episodes even. We’d try to guess how characters evolved and plots ended from what we could get our hands on, and all the fic fanon tended to be set after people had seen only a couple of eps.

Gundam Wing has 49 episodes. Things change rapidly and radically.

What's a character/ship you've learned to appreciate? What made you change your mind?

Relena x Dorothy. Both as characters and as a ship. Part of this is that I hadn't seen all of the series at the time I first did fandom, but I had seen Endless Waltz, and that was the extent to which I had known Dorothy. She doesn't even interact with Relena in EW!! I had no impression of her (besides whomst??), and I honestly don't even remember if Relena ever appeared in fics I read since a lot of them were AUs anyway. However, after seeing the series and MISS RELENA and all of Dorothy's... Dorothy, I think she's got some great cult appeal!! And my mind really changed on both when I saw the whole series properly. I'm not sure I would have been on board with them at the time since I was less discerning about how female characters often get developed poorly, but I don't regret that I experienced Relena and Dorothy fully at a time where I could appreciate them.

I eventually started to appreciate Relena more, she grows up a lot by the end, even if she definitely should not be handling the responsibility she has...

Honestly breaking outside of the typical ships by reading more fics broadened my horizons. Writers I loved ventured into non-typical and I found myself enjoying the exploration. I think over time it had less to do with the ship and more to do with the characters as the fandom aged.

I've been reading a lot more yaoi since interacting with the larger fandom. I've always loved non-traditional gender roles in romance stories, and I don't know why it took me so long to try yaoi? I've read some yuri but never in Gundam Wing. Interacting with the yaoi community has opened up a lot more characterization of the pilots for me, which have always played the role of "tough, emotionless boys" in my headcanons.

Howard. He’s amazing and hilarious and as I get older I’m more and more like, is this the only sane character? I used to just be like “who is this weird guy?” and now I’m like “why isn’t there more Howard?”

What characters/ships do you think got some negative flack? How has the GW fandom's attitudes towards those characters/ships changed?

The scientists hahahahahaahah. I think for the most part unless you are in a niche group, the scientists are generally seen as child abusers to varying degrees. Tsubarov? Everyone still hates him but acknowledge he has a flair for the dramatique. Camp villain appreciation I guess. Relena was definitely shat on, being at the unfortunate intersection of romantic rival and 'annoying' female lead. Again, as someone whose canon experience was informed by Endless Waltz more than the anime, I don't remember if I had any opinions on her at all. However, I think people have admitted where they were wrong (whether owning up to bashing, or speaking up about fandom broadly).

Well besides the obvious Relena, one character that got so much hate and bashing in 1xR circles was Sylvia. I remember one of the first things I checked when I got back into fandom was Sylvia's role in the show and was surprised to see how little she actually does?? She's literally in one episode but was constantly dragged into 1xR stories to be a romantic rival for Relena. Pretty much the same role Relena took on in a lot of 1x2 stories. I guess we just got away with it because she was a minor character. It was just interesting to me that 1xR fans gave some girl the same treatment that 1x2 fans did to Relena. I think that realization helped me put aside the Relena bashing and move on from it. If I don't see Sylvia as an evil character anymore, why would Relena bashers? And I was really happy to find that I was right. As the fandom moved away from romance-centric plots to look at self growth and politics, less characters became target for fandom hate/bashing, and we moved on.

Well, back in the olden days Relena and Wufei were probably the ones who got it worst. Dorothy. Hilde. Zechs. Treize. Heck, even reasonably popular characters like Duo and Quatre had their own "defense" societies against some of the fanon surrounding them. But fans have grown up over the years and portrayals of the characters and various ships have too. (2x5 for instance has gone from a total rare pair to one of the top GW ships on AO3 which I find a fascinating trajectory.) Have we evolved into a perfect utopia? No, and there will probably always be complaints about how a given character or ship is popularly portrayed. I certainly have my bugbears, just like anyone else might. But it's a long time since I've opened up a fic and seen character bashing of the sort that was common c. 2001. People might not be shy about sharing their opinions on their own blogs, but picking fights on other people's content? Flame wars? Not so much these days. The GW fandom might be smaller, but we're also closer-knit. Fandom is about having fun; finding the pockets that bring you enjoyment and finding ways to filter out the rest, and I think we mostly get that (or we're just too old and tired to have much fight left in in us lol).

Well, very early Relena and Duo battles made me nervous of the fandom back in the day, but I think those mainly came from places within ourselves that we can see now don’t need to be at odds. I love them both and I am glad to see the fandom embrace them both on their own merits. I think it’s easy to be anti- when you are younger and appreciative when you are older (and I totally understand how people could be anti! No judgements. I just love everyone and want everyone to be happy. Except Zechs. He has some SERIOUS explaining to do.)

Oh, Relena *definitely* had a lot of negative flack. I'm glad most of us seem to have mellowed out about the poor girl. It's hard to hate a kid when one is in their 30's, lol

Relena of course, but also 3x4 was seen as the “lesser” ship back in my day and there wasn’t much depth or enthusiasm by many other fans.

(2) That anon seems to be equating fandom toxicity with shipping, when fandom toxicity has nothing to do with shipping. There's plenty of toxic fans that ship absolutely nothing at all. That anon being quite a good example... I don't think I've seen anyone so triggered by shipping in a while. I mean, most people don't stop shipping their ships just bc they don't become canon. Some people even are well aware they won't become canon. We still get our enjoyment and aren't a-holes, lime anon. Meanwhile, what do people like anon get? What do they want? A medal? (3) Honestly, it started off as kinda funny and cringe but damn anon you found away to turn super creepy super fast. You cant go around dictating who a real fan is and pretty much emotionally abuse people who just dont ship the same thing as you. This is me trying to be as nice as possible, but please take a break from the fandom if you are going into people's inboxes to just be a menace.

(5) omg what's wrong with that anon? shipping fictional characters doesn't hurt anybody, and even if the ship isn't confirmed as canon in the end of the story this doesn't invalidate people's right to ship them, for example, in the end of naruto, sasuke and sakura were confirmed as a couple but this didn't made everyone suddenly stop shipping them with other people, in evangelion no couple was formed in the end of the series but people still ship them together, and that's fine because as I said doesn't hurt anybody I'm sorry that you're receiving toxic asks, idk if you are aware but you can block anons directly when they send asks to you, you just need to click in the "..." bellow the ask

(6) People have been shipping pairings since the olden days. Gundam Wings for example has a multitude of pairings, all fanons of course, and you can still read old fanfics. Salty anon must be terribly young LOL. Btw, being a teacher has nothing to do with it. I'm a PhD scholar (just passed my viva!) and you bet I have some weird ass ships in some other fandoms. Grow up salty anon.

I'm sorry to collect these, but thank you everyone for the positive vibes and kind words! I've been in jjk fandom before the anime and it has since getting bigger - and ofc getting worse too, sadly. And I've also been in numerous fandom over the course of the years, but this is the first time I saw someone so anti with shipping in general. Shipping is not even the main activity of this blog, as you all can see. itafushi is not even the weirdest ship in jjk fandom.

Everyone in fandom enjoys things in different ways, as long as you don't cause trouble for others, there's no "right" or "wrong". It's just a piece of media. It doesn't dictate your life. I don't and don't want to dictate others in what is right and wrong in this matter. But yes, as long as there is a fandom of it, shipping will most likely be a part of it. This applied to fandom everywhere, which use other language too. And harsh it may be, but we are here because we share the same interest on one stuff. And that interest will fade in time when we find new things to be interested in.

And also seems like one toxic anon attracts another and I'm turning off my anon ask for the time being. I've been considering doing that for a long time.

do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to as often as I can. When I first post something and I get an influx of comments, I try to do it once a day. But when I get random comments on old stuff, I often forget to go back and reply, but I read every single one, and I do try to remember to write back.

what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? Oh man. Most of my fics happy endings... But the happiest?? Probably Acts of Man, since it's a Christmas fic and it has this kind of storybook coda on the end of it.

what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Hmm. My older fics tended to be a little more angsty and open ended... probably this old Sterek fic Those Who Hunt Us or this Isaac Lahey study Bygone

do you write crossovers? Not much anymore, but I did a cool 3 sentence fic challenge back in 2014 and each prompt (from tumblr folks at the time) were things like MJN air + Supernatural or Sherlock and John work at Mooby's. I also have a soft spot for this Sherlock/Cowboy Bebop xover cleverly called 221Bebop: Honky Tonk Woman. And of course, there is the abandoned HP/Sherlock crossover bestie and I started and will never finish, so IDK why I even bring it up. Actually come to think of it, I also had the Sherlock Monstrumologist one... I just wrote a lot of Sherlock xover fic back in the day, huh.

have you ever received hate on a fic? Not on AO3 comments. I haven't gotten some odd reviews/comments, but I have been very fortunate to have not experienced much of this in my 20+ years in fandom.

do you write smut? if so, what kind? Yes. All of the kinds?? I remember thinking it was such a big deal to write a "lemon" back int the day, and now it's old hat. have you ever had a fic translated? Yes! And it's such an insanely wonderful honor. I've also had fics written that are inspired by mine and I just... blanket permission to anyone who wants to remix, translate, art, whatever my work. It's so flattering.

Most recently, I had Black Sails in the Sunset translated into Portuguese.

have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, but it was abandoned. I would love to do something like that again. Or something slightly different, like a comic *cough*@bettertasting*cough*

what’s your all-time favourite ship? How does one even answer that? Heero/Duo was the ship that got me into fandom; Harry/Draco is something I will still occasionally return to when I want like nostalgic comfort; Merlin/Arthur has some of the best fanworks I've ever consumed and they feel more like canon works than fanon; I've been reading and writing Stiles/Peter for like 5 years now... So, this is my non-answer. IDK man. I have a whole fleet and I'm ok with that.

what’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I had this idea for a Stranger Things OT3 fic at the end of Season 1, and then I wrote the first chapter and never posted it or wrote more before Season 2 dropped, and meh. I'll never go back to it. I loved the idea, but the characters have changed so much, I don't think I could capture what I wanted anymore. Maybe I'll post my WIPs I'll never finish someday and clean out my WIP folder.

what are your writing strengths? I think I'm funny and can inject that well into characters? And I like to think that I am good at writing in the character voice.

what are your writing weaknesses? If I need a "real" plot. Like, I cannot write case fics or mission fics or anything like that. I spent ages reworking my last fic so I could "Kevin Smith" the action by only have characters talk about some stuff that happened to them, and never see any of it on screen.

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? I think I would take the easy way out and do it like: "blah blah blah" she said in French; or "she let out a rant in French" but never actually worry about translating anything.

I had this idea for a Sailor Moon fic that’s based off the “Usagi is betrayed by the Guardians and Mamoru because they’re OOC and Reasons” trope that was very popular back in the day. I don’t know how relevant that is now, some ten years later, but if you weren’t looking for that it was either a Usagi/Mamoru AU or the just as popular Sailor Moon/DBZ/Gundam Wing fics while Toonami was at its peak.

I never got into the crossover fics (there might’ve been one, if my memory is right, but it was a long time ago so it’s out of mind, out of sight now), but the betrayal fics, the ones I’ve skimmed, always left an impression on me.

...However, I never did like playing Follow the Leader to the letter, and I often sneer at the (fandom specific) tropes that have become popularized and made fanon. So needless to say, my version of the betrayal trope involves upturning the bandwagon and putting it back together my way.

Mainly, the idea behind the fic is to have a group of coyote anthros - be they an alien species a’la Mau people or youma - utilize illusion magic to weave and affect everyone Usagi is connected to with a strong compulsion. Some of the anthros might poke and give the Guardians a little push this way or that, maybe say a few words, but otherwise they would sit back and watch it all unfold.

From here the idea gets a bit muddled, because the original intention was to make them villains. Coyotes are often used as trickster archetypes in Native American mythology...which is where the roadblock starts, because as I understand it there are tribes that don’t like their mythologies being mishandled let alone be hit with the villain bat by non-Native writers. I have but a drop of Native blood in me through my mother’s side of the family...but that’s just it - a drop, and AFAIK neither her nor her siblings (who are more Mexican than Native American) know what tribe they descend from. The Muse recently suggested making them anti-villains/anti-heroes, but honestly the best course of action would be to do research and at least be respectful of the culture I’m drawing inspiration from despite having that bit of Native ancestry. Or, at least, if they’re going to be villains don’t caricaturize them; that’s a bad look.

In short, this idea can be summarized as “Betrayal Fic but instead the Sailor Guardians are compelled by illusions set upon them by a group of coyote aliens/anthros, who want to see how Usagi reacts. Will she impress on them the fabled leadership of the Moon and see through their ruse or will she succumb to the pressure of the illusions? Will the Guardians, and Mamoru, uncover the reality that’s being enforced on them?”

6. Has fandom ever made you enjoy a pairing you previously hated?*

No, but two other things have happened:

a. fandom made me grow hate a pairing I was originally neutral about.

b. fandom built a need in me to write a pairing I hate in a way that I thought was appropriate to canon but without the most annoying parts of the fanon script. (This has happened in multiple fandoms, but I'm specifically citing Sakura/Sasuke from Naruto and Wolfram/Yuuri from Kyou Kara Maou.) 9. Most disliked character(s)? Why?

Oof. Okay, I'm going to go the Naruto and Gundam Wing route for this one.

Naruto: I have a little circle of hatred for certain characters who "sacrificed" themselves for the greater good but ultimately caused needless additional suffering for someone they supposedly loved. Itachi, Minato, and Rin are all guilty of this. They could have gone about things in a manner that didn't cause Sasuke/Naruto/Kakashi the amount of suffering those characters had to endure because of selfish choices.

And no, Rin doesn't get a pass because she was young. I said what I said.

Gundam Wing: Zechs and Trieze are so ridiculously overrated in this series as influential players. They're overblown sociopaths who get all the glory even though their female counterparts are doing all the work and doing it better/smarter.

#6: Heero and Duo

What is their favorite feature of their partner’s?

Duo adores Heero's eyes. They're very expressive and Duo's always had a knack for reading him...especially if he can look him in the eyes. Heero knows this of course and will try to avoid eye contact if he's feeling particularly vulnerable or agitated with his partner.

When Heero's feeling playful, he'd say his favorite feature is Duo's nose (which is crooked from getting broken a couple times as a teenager). If he's being honest, however, it's Duo's smile that does him in. Duo has different smiles for just about every situation. He grins in the face of friendship and adversity alike, an art Heero's never mastered. But his smiles speak volumes that his words hide, which is why Heero loves them. Especially the small, tender ones that are reserved just for him.

I honestly don't understand klance I mean lance is obviously straight. Headcanons are fine but the fandom is just terrible at this stage with their death and rape threats. I kid you not this happened

I do think it’s somewhat unfair to portray all KL shippers as self-entitled gay fetishists or raging children with no understanding of reality. There are a lot of people who have discussed its appeal with me in a perfectly calm and reasonable manner. I mean, obviously heterosexual people have been shipped since Kirk and Spock in the 60’s, and Captain Kirk makes Lance look like (more of) a poser when it comes to hitting on women. Fanon isn’t inherently wrong.

But (and you knew a but was coming) I tend to notice a lot of rejection of the canon interpretations of the characters in favor of fan interpretation.

Fanon is one thing. Canon is another.

In canon, Lance is trying to do what Kirk did with far less success, Keith is not a pining boy but a blatant Expy of Kenichi Gou from Voltes V down to his Hot Blooded Sideburns, and the show focuses very little on romance, putting one hinted at relationship in the extreme background and giving another, if read correctly, the extremely slow burn treatment which at this point is merely the establishment of a friendship. “Pining Keith”, “bisexual Lance” and similar theories are just fanon, with no evidence to support them.

And because I’m a geek of sorts, I can safely say I have seen this exact same thing before when Gundam Wing aired on Toonami. While that show was never meant to have romance from the get go, it was established that two of the main heroes had an attraction to women, one’s backstory had him married at a very young age and the death of his wife turned him into a mysoginist, one had a woman who he treated as something of an adopted sister, and one…well maybe it was the dub but his headcanon of being gay was accepted although the show didn’t care either way.

Fanon tended to view all five of the heroes as gay and some hardcore shippers even went so far as to claim that gay content was censored in the US dub (which it wasn’t, the whole thing ran uncensored on Toonami at midnight). The show did not focus on romance in any real capacity (unlike its predecessor G Gundam) but the fanon was so insistent they tricked themselves into believing it was canon.

And then a spinoff manga came where the main lead and the woman he liked did share a kiss.

Whoops.

Fanon is not inherently wrong. It’s not an issue to make fan stories about this stuff. But to insist it’s canon? To demand it’s canon with the usual accusations of homophobia and sexism? Attacking people who don’t share your headcanon and saying they should be raped and tortured?!

Bull. Complete bull.

Your headcanon is not canon in the show. And liking a male/female pairing does not make you evil or a homophobe. I’m an old fashioned romantic (to a degree) who likes male/female romance. It doesn’t mean I reject m/m romance if written correctly. (I wouldn’t have gotten Moonlight of my own free will otherwise). It’s just that in this case, it doesn’t make sense and I heavily dislike what said fanon turns both into.

I mean, you could argue that Keith and Shiro have more romantic chemistry if you saw them like I dunno, Haruka and Michiru from Sailor Moon. But that apparently means you’re a pedophile, and that’s an argument for another post.
