Not gonna lie, this whole thing really sucks. I think I wrote a message awhile back about the very cool feminist angle of the Plus Global Auditions Invitation video, I'm an SNL Army and was new to watching kpop very closely and was so sold by that video. I thought - 'this company is really different.' Going public with a company f*cks a lot of things up, it happens all so often, and often it's the people and the ethos that gets messed up the most. It's frustrating to see this devolution. Because I was really excited by what MHJ was being given space to do at BH/Hybe. Though, as a fellow art school student, I am shaking my head and serious side-eyes at how she says things like 'I'm an artist, I don't know how to read contracts' (obviously I'm paraphrasing) - it's clear Hybe knows she's got the goods but she's not playing by their game anymore. The response and flood of crazy comments and hate at BTS is frustrating but expected, but just such a waste of time all the same. I've also never thought BH and then Hybe were super super smart and long-gaming everything (don't come for me Bangtan U fans) I think they were lucky and scrappy and skillful and making cool things happen moment to moment. Later on they got better at the strategic planning, sure. I don't know. They may need a good kick in the pants to remember that's what makes them great at what they do. But still, I hate the idea of MHJ being cooked even if she seems like a real pain in the tush to work with. Because technically, she's what got me to really buy-in to what BTS & BH were doing in the first place.

Yeah, it's a shitty situation.

To be fair, I think at the start, Bang PD was trying to do something different and 'forward-thinking' with HYBE. He sought out good talent going by the hires he did in 2019/2020, managing to onboard creatives like Min Heejin and Zico. Zico already incorporated his company to manage himself before Bang PD approached him, which is probably why he owns ~24.5% of KOZ - his sub-label in HYBE.

But with Min Heejin...

She had partnered with 250 - a popular DJ in Korea and NewJeans' main producer, since she left SM in 2018. He runs BANA (a creative collective) but she'd wanted her own label since the start.

Bang PD knew this, and wanted her for HYBE, so it's likely he made all sorts of promises to get her on board without awarding her a single share. Almost as soon as key creative decisions had to be made post-Global Plus audition, they both clashed, but HYBE as a company was less than 1 year old and it appears Bang PD and MHJ still had good relations... which was kinda easy since he still needed her creative output and wanted to see what she could do. So they let her make her own label: ADOR, and keep NewJeans even though according to Min Heejin, HYBE executives and Bang PD thought her concept and style of music for them would be impossible to sell to k-pop stans.

They expected NewJeans to fail or flounder. Instead, by 2023 NewJeans had become one of the top 5 most valuable k-pop IPs in Korea. If my guess is right, by that point she had no shares in ADOR, no agreement with HYBE's indefinite non-compete clause. She could walk anytime and I'm sure a lot of people wanted her.

Then HYBE approached Min Heejin with the shareholder contract to give her 20% of the company. It's a classic 'carrot and stick'. The carrot was easy to see. Apparently offered her the shares at a very low price, apparently Bang PD even lent her the money to buy it, for a valuation that HYBE considered more than generous, he was in her KakaoTalk chats buttering her up with those godawful emojis lmaooo. He was selling that shit hard. The stick in the contract was the poison pill which essentially tied her to HYBE for as long as they want her.

Perhaps she was aware of the pill and signed any way because at that point they still had good relations with Bang PD and HYBE in general. But according to her, Bang PD kept wanting more control over NewJeans the more successful the group became. Realizing she had to do something about the poison pill, she sought to negotiate, and as is typical in these sort of situations, you fight greed with more greed.

Asking to bump up the multiple on the options from 13x to 30x is frankly ridiculous. For a male CEO I can see it being considered... maybe, but for a woman? In Korea?

I'm sure when the other suits at HYBE heard that's what she was asking, at least one of them almost had a stroke. The logic is simple though: start crazy high and end.. just high. If HYBE was looking to exert more control over NewJeans (for example, every sub-label and group in HYBE changed to using 'bio-paper and ink' for their albums starting in 2023, to help HYBE meet their ESG targets. The only company that's not made the switch yet, is ADOR. Given how carefully MHJ controls branding and album design for NewJeans, I can see this minute detail being a massive thorn lol)... anyway, if HYBE was indeed looking to gain more control, the fact that they'd have to pay 30x if MHJ exercised her options on a whim, would serve as a very strong deterrent.

Given what I understand Korean corporate culture to be like, I doubt she had any friends in upper management to start, but with a demand like that, practically all of them would turn enemies in a heartbeat. It's the sheer audacity lmao. My guess is she would've eventually negotiated down, at least once she was assured real creative independence from Bang PD. But at some point, rather, quite predictably given this is corporate Korea, the need for control and the egos involved decided she had to be cut loose now and perhaps taught to not bite the hand that feeds her.

It's not a sentiment limited to the suits at HYBE. It's followed her since SM and the general public would hate it too, which is one reason I think it's only a matter of time before the narrative switches again to HYBE's favour. I promise you, most regular men in Korea would go red in the face, eyes bulging out their heads, drool and spit shooting out like projectiles, at the thought she would dare to demand such a thing. And in a way they'd be right. It's an insane amount of money for female creative in Korea, but I think given everything else, it also seems like a gamble she was taking as a means to an end. A simple negotiating tactic, given what she keeps highlighting as her main goal - unimpeded and full creative and managerial control.

Bang PD wants to build a 'forward-thinking' company comparable to Western conglomerate juggernauts like SONY and Warner Music, but I don't think these Korean men have the chops to do it right, just yet. I've had that impression of Bang PD for a few years now. He's been getting results, but they are inconsistent and he's got the biggest 'surety' in a sense with BTS, so he's been fine, and will continue to be fine for a few more years at least. But if they are messing up this spectacularly with their first female executive and one of their most valuable IPs, over... an options price negotiation?

And they want to pretend to be better than any other corp in Korea?

Lol.

Anyhoo.

I sympathize a bit with how you feel, but as a Korean woman, I guess I'm numb to it. There's a reason I've never chosen to work in that country, there's a reason why the birth rate is nearing the negatives. It's really unfortunate, and I'm sorry you're seeing a prior expectation you had getting blown up this way. And this latest hatefest on BTS has been quite ugly and isn't near done yet. This whole situation is gross, and even more so when the motivations behind it are so... banal and backwards.

But these are undercurrents that are too simple and boring for the average stan. Burning the witch who is responsible for masterminding the demise of a virtuous group is far more exciting. And so that's how the story will go.

I just hope that by some miracle, NewJeans turns out okay and manages to thrive after this. Because in all of this mess, they will deal with the implications the most and for the longest time.

Hybe/MHJ update

Hybe is on the top left, MHJ on the upper right and the energy of the public down below.

Hybe is definitely thinking that she’s a snake and very manipulative. That she’s someone who’s a pathological liar (not saying she is or isn’t but this is what hybe believes). They think she’s being petty over this and blowing things out of proportion. They also think she’s very cunning and that they underestimated her. Hybe also thinks she’s petty over well they think she’s coming after a female hybe employee for no reason? Could be blonde but could just be someone that mhj thought was gonna follow her to ador? Maybe a trainee or staff that she thought she could take with her to ador but then hybe snatched them up and mhj thinks this girl has no loyalty?

She believes that hybe didn’t really follow through on their word and she believes everything she said in her press conference (about them lying and misleading her). She did believe in hybe and that they could’ve been different from her other company’s that she worked with. Now she’s realizing that big corporations really shouldn’t be trusted. They promised her something but they reneged on it. I think she might be telling the truth. Hybe promised her something big? But now they’re like “well actually….”. So she’s upset. Might be money related?

The public thinks this is all so childish and pathetic. Like two children throwing the biggest tantrums trying to outdo the other person. I wouldn’t be surprised if the public gets over this stuff quickly.

Bang PD - 6 of wands - he thinks he’s untouchable. He’s a very prideful man. It’s giving leo energy. He thinks nobody can come at him and go against him. He’s very success oriented and will whatever it takes to get there. I’m seeing someone who’s yelling “alright team! Let’s do this” but then only the other people are working and he’s just there giving orders. He thinks he knows it all and is always right.

Park Jiwon (CEO of HYBE) - 6 of pentacles - he’s a very straight businessman. Very dull tbh. He’s the one pushing for a mediation between everyone. He’s also trying to look over contracts and agreements. He strikes me as a pushover tbh.

Min Heejin - 10 of wands - she really feels betrayed. And that she’s dealing with a lot at the moment. She feels like she’s been stabbed in the back after everything she’s done for them. I do believe she believes everything she said and did at her press conference.

HYBE staff - 8 of swords - they really can’t do or say anything much tbh. Their hands are tied. They’ve also been told to stay out of it. I see a bunch of people shrugging.

Ador staff - 3 of pentacles - are some of them already looking for other jobs? Other companies or other hybe labels? But they’re open to working with hybe or whoever to smooth things over.

The Newjeans girlies - 2 of wands - they’re conflicted. They don’t know what to do or who to side with. They’re very upset though. They’re angry that they’re in this position. But they don’t seem to be blaming anyone?

Their parents - 4 of wands - they’re also being told to stay out of it but they don’t really want to speak up? They’re not that type of people anyways. They’re mainly concerned about the health and safety of the girls.

Newjeans and hybe - the empress - they do mean what they say when they want to prioritize the health and well-being of the girls. They want to provide them with the best care possible. They believe that hybe wants the best for them.

Newjeans and min heejin - they also believe her and that she has good intentions towards them. They believe what she’s saying and that she wants a good outcome for them.

The outcome:

More high profile attention? She doesn’t want to leave? But she’s not gonna get what she wants/is asking for from hybe? People might be disappointed that she won’t leave? Bang pd/hybe might threaten her like “if you don’t budge on this issue and do what we want you to, see you in court”.

You sat in the library, waiting for Riki to arrive. When he got there, you opened your bag and got your work out as he did the same. The table was quite covered with all the schoolwork you needed to cover with him. Leaving your bag open, you made sure to tell the boy, "If any of your belongings fall into my bag, feel free to grab them, no hesitations." He just nodded and you smiled at him.

About an hour had passed, half of your session over already, and Riki seemed to be in his own world as you moved on to the next topic. You rapped your pencil sharply on his textbook, startling him back to reality. He apologized sheepishly as you chuckled at his behavior. "What about this chapter is confusing you?" you asked, returning your attention to the statistics papers in front of you two.

"Ah... all of it together? I know some individual concepts, but once you put in all these words together, like discrete random variables and the Z-score, I get lost."

"Understandable. Let me get some notes out, I think I have an explanation written somewhere." You rifled through your bag, looking for the probability notes that had come out of your binder. Huffing in frustration, you dug further, unable to find them, when suddenly you felt a warm hand on yours. Looking up in surprise, you see Riki holding your hand in his own. "Is everything alright, Riki?"

He smiled, a bit abashed, and brought your hand up to the table. "You said if anything of mine fell into your bag, to grab it, no hesitations." He laughed as you withdrew your hands from his, bringing them up to your face to hide your embarrassment.

When you collected yourself enough to look at him, you mumbled, "Gosh, Riki, you're such a sleaze," not meaning a word you said.

He feigned confusion, innocently replying, "But I was just getting my things out to study statistics." As you rolled your eyes, he laughed again.

"Go back to your textbook, Riki."

Plot: Jake and Y/N have a special moment at a fansign, allowing a very steamy night, in particular, to occur.

Y/N, a high school student, was struck by the pandemic as off-guard as everyone else. He had been stuck in the daily cycle of school-eat-study-sleep repeat for so long that he was completely lost on how to make use of the abundant free time he had.

As he found himself exploring the internet, he stumbled upon I-Land. Quickly interested in the competition show, he began learning about the how celebrities were “constructed” in Korea, and he also became a fan of one of the trainees in particular, Jake Sim.

With his cute face and astoundingly attractive aussie accent, Y/N found himself quickly rooting for one of the most talented participants and hoped that his favorite would make it into the final lineup.

Days of waiting and supporting his favorite with comments under each video finally payed off when Jake was announced to be in the final lineup. Y/N found himself so happy, he did not even realize when the tears began to flow down his cheeks. Even though all of his interactions with Jake had been one-sided, which was Jake simply talking to the camera, Y/N felt a sense of pride like someone close to him had just won.

Supporting ENHYPEN through their first comeback, Fever, and begging his parents to allow him to buy an album, Y/N found himself smiling even more when upon unboxing the album, he discovered he got a Jake photocard.

Seeing his idol making a cute kissy face and not being able to resist his beautiful black orbs, Y/N kissed the photocard before putting it in his phone cover.

Y/N religiously carried his precious Jakie around with him wherever he went, all the while stalking the group youtube channel for new vlogs for him to see his favorite.

With more comebacks and concepts, Y/N saw Jake transform from a youthful, bright boy in his teens to a daddy with the most attractive actions. From the way he began to lick his lips to the way his jawline and features became more prominent, Y/N could not help but feel a tent in his pants forming. Seeing the way his bias’s attractive hairstyles accentuated his features and his confidence-filled winks and lip bites just emanated sexiness, Y/N could only fantasize about being touched by Jake and found his lower half become painfully big as nothing could seem to ease the discomfort.

Y/N found himself crying himself to sleep more than once. He felt like in the sea of ENHYPEN fans, he was nobody to Jake, even though he was one of Jake’s first fans who supported him throughout I-Land and from a rookie group to one of the most successful and well-known fourth generation groups. He wanted to let Jake know about how he supported him, felt like he knew him, and wanted him badly.

Y/N kept supporting ENHYPEN in each comeback by buying albums, but the realization that Jake was never going to know who Y/N was broke him each time. Y/N, not that he ever would, could not even try to meet Jake coincidentally at a restaurant or known area where idols are commonly seen because he did not even live in Korea. Of course, Y/N was well aware that doing so would be considered stalking and Jake certainly would not like Y/N intruding on his privacy either.

Stuck in his one-sides admiration, Y/N could only meet with Jake in his dreams that were fueled by the hours he spent everyday watching enha content.

Y/N still kept buying albums, and it was not long before there was another comeback and Y/N was hoping for a Jake pc once again. In a strange turn of events, Y/N not only realized that he got another Jake pc, but he also won a ticket to a fan sign.

The chance to meet with ENHYPEN and to finally look his bias in the eye made Y/N gush with excitement. He felt like his hopes and dreams could finally come true, even if he couldn’t have Jake, at least Jake would know Y/N existed.

Y/N could not fall asleep for weeks before the day of sign, simply out of excitement. He worked to get all of his school work done for the days he would be away in Korea for the fansign. Now in his final year of high school, Y/N had been working a job and had enough money to travel to Seoul. He booked the tickets a few days before and often laid down on his bed, staring at the ceiling with a smile.

Y/N’s smile never faded, all throughout security, his flight to Seoul, and taxi ride to the hotel room. Y/a was overjoyed to know that he would be seeing his Jake the next day, and he went out to purchase a few things as gifts for him.

Y/N arrived at the venue of the fansign and felt his heart beating. As he walked out of the security check and into the area where the event was to take place, Y/N’s heart dropped. He saw a line of around 25 people in front of him, all of whom were young Korean girls or teenagers. Y/N’s smile immediately turned into a frown as he suddenly felt self-conscious and out of place. Y/N began to question if it was normal for a guy to support a male idol so much and was scared of Jake feeling awkward around him because of this. As he saw the line getting shorter, he became able to see Jake with more detail and clairity.

The way Jake’s face shined and the way his eyes and wavy hair gave a look full of attractiveness and wonder, Y/N became more nervous about meeting Jake. The time finally came when Y/N was in front of Jake.

Jake looked into Y/N’s eyes with the most non-judge mental, friendly look possible, which took away all of Y/N’s fear.

“Hi, what’s your name,” Jake politely asked as he took a good look at the other male. Jake’s attention was finally caught by the fact that a male had finally come, after the huge flurry of female fans.

“I’m Y/N L/N! I’ve been supporting you forever since the first episode of I-LAND, and I’ve been buying albums for every comeback,” Y/N quickly announces as he saw Jake smiling while signing his album.

“I’m so happy to hear that, Y/N. I hope you’ll continue to support us,” Jake said with an angelic smirk. In fact, Jake was smiling because of Y/N’s words just as much as of Y/N himself. Seeing the other boy’s beautiful, jewel-like eyes and cutely parted, pink lips with a nice tuft of hair prettily covering an area of his forehead, Jake couldn’t help but stare. Unfortunately, Jake knew his limits as an idol and Y/N knew his as a fan. Jake handed Y/N his album back, and Jake kept looking at Y/N until the distance between the two became too much for him to see anymore.

Y/N felt like he was on cloud nine after finally being able to meet the object of his affections and getting Jake’s attention. He quickly made his way back to the hotel room, albeit feeling a little upset that talking to Jake for 2 minutes was the most he could interact with him. He still wanted to get to know Jake and be close to him, and talk for hours on end.
