I’ve always loved reading WWX in JYL’s role just because I have the inner need to see him doted on and loved like she is, and this has all of that. My favorite Fanon Jiang Cheng content is in some kind of happy AU where Wangxian get together young, and at first LWJ and JC are like two cats locked in a box together but eventually JC grows as a person and stops being a dick to WWX all the time, which lets LWJ accept that JC loves his brother to hell and back even when he’s being a jerk about it

Specifically because I find it immensely entertaining to watch LWJ come to understand the Yunmeng Bros dynamic. Like, he and LXC are such wildly different brothers than WWX and JC are and I truly do feel like that plays a part in his initial misgivings about JC, so watching him eventually settle on “Jiang Wanyin is terrible. He is awful. He is a whiny demanding brat with no respect for others and he always tracks mud into the Jingshi when he visits. What? No, you’re not allowed to say that about him. Only Wei Ying and I may insult him. No, I don’t care that it’s true. If you’re mean to him I’ll kill you.”

It’s just very funny to me. LWJ loves his terrible obnoxious didi very much but he can’t say that because he’s mad at Jiang Cheng for… whatever it is Jiang Cheng did this time.

i saw a little bit ago that you said you don't ship wangxian (and before you smash the delete button LEMME EXPLAIN THIS IS NOT HATEMAIL) so now i'm curious as to what your fave wwx ships and lwj ships are, if you have any?

:'D you're all good WWX: funnily enough i like most platonic ships with wwx! I loved him with nhs a lot and then they just kinda...dropped the friendship altogether? my friend loved the idea of wwx/lxc as drinking gossiping bitches and while i don't see it it's like ship-in-law :'D i enjoyed his friendship with wen qing during his farmer arc, i LOVE the idea of hatefuck wwx/jzx, or well, more like hatefuck turns soft because things are said and revealed and wwx can't look at jzx the same (/positive). him and jiang cheng have deeper storyline than wangxian to me so if wwx's whole purpose was to platonically be everything and more for his "brother" that'd make his character excellent to me. i also had a headcanon while watching the show that wwx and xue yang were biologically brothers but each took VERY DIFFERENT path in live/was provided with different care. i REALLY love their on-screen chemistry and would love more of that in either direction, yllz wwx joining with xue yang somehow or "fixing him". or become greater archenemies even. i really don't like his behavior with yanli and lwj, yet those are the main ones for his character :'(

LWJ: i don't think i have any proper ships for him (hence why i don't draw much of him :( ), he was just so stoic and repressed i wanted to hear him sing, you feel me :') i enjoyed the problematic gusu trio doing all sorts of things with and to him, i like the idea of warprize lwj/wens with lans, drunk lwj was just so adorable and i wish more were privy to that sight of him :') i know jiang cheng and lwj are suppossed to like...not like each other because of how wwx acts around the other but i've never personally seen it, it's very fanon-y, at least coming from the show.

wwx is very shippable to me (apart from the main two characters he's meant to be connected to, just my luck) whereas lwj is not shippable to me at all (even though i like lwj more out of the two, i think it's just the nature of their characters and wwx interacts with others more, so naturally it comes up more)

so I watched the donghua first but went back to read the novel for the confession scene and I’m convinced mdzs is the funniest thing ever. like. this is the worst possible time for a romantic confession. poor JGY and LXC are just third-wheeling in the corner. and people just keep showing up and—oh my god, the yiling patriarch is sitting in hanguang-jun’s lap???

Su She shows up and they’re literally hugging. but the funniest part is how like. there’s more people. they just keep showing up and they’re still hugging

Nie Huaisang shows up. “The Yiling Patriarch was basically sitting on Hanguang-jun’s lap.”

how long is this going on for? like three whole new people had time to arrive, JGY has been digging the whole time. have they just been cuddling for 20 minutes in the middle of this very tense, fraught moment? words cannot describe how much I love this scene

About how wwx is the 'problem' in the yunmeng bros reconciliation I completely agree and that's why I think wangxian works so well in canon : none of wwx's past actions have hurt personally lwj, so wwx doesn't feel very guilty. Wangxian is true love but there's a canon where wwx performs the core's transfer on lwj plus lxc died at nightless city plus lqr died during the war = so now lwj is a lonely sect leader = lwj loves wwx in every universe! but I really don't know how in this they can have their happy ending

i've been working on a long meta that has accidentally taken a year because i was waiting for all of the 7 seas translation to come out about the difference between the show's "In a person's life he needs to learn to say two things-- thank you, and sorry" vs the book's "Between you and me there is no need for thank you and sorry" and I think you've actually just nailed it?

one of the things that typifies MXTX love interests is that they're simply willing to go farther for one another than anyone else in that person's life. this always feels especially clear in TGCF: mu qing and feng xin trample well past the boundaries any normal person would hold when it comes to standing by xie lian, but at the end of the day, things simply go too far and they have to go (and even then, intend to come back!!)-- whereas hua cheng literally never gives up, even in death. it is a level of devotion that xie lian is lucky to have, but not actually something that can be expected of most people, which is something i feel the narrative acknowledges.

the same thing can be said of jiang cheng and lan wangji in regards to wei wuxian, or even the contrast between wangxian and xiyao. jiang cheng takes his support of wei wuxian as far as he possibly can, and much farther than the wider world realizes-- and frankly, much farther than even wei wuxian realizes (why do you think he still had chenqing a) at all or b) literally in his pocket you absolute goober). lan wangji is able to go much farther, partly because of his personality but partly because of the pure luck and happenstance of his social position. he isn't constrained by the same things jiang cheng is, he doesn't have the same demands to balance. and, of course, he doesn't share the complex familial baggage and all the other history that leads to wei wuxian and jiang cheng hurting each other so much.

maybe "between you and me, there's no need for thank you and sorry" isn't really a "moral" (for lack of a better word) in the same way as CQL's thank you and sorry, but just a statement of fact, and an acknowledgement of coincidence and luck. they share a history that means they don't need to thank or apologize the way they both do to others in their lives, and that's part of what makes the relationship feel so good and so special.

CQL would need to change this because of the changes they made to the pacing of wangxian's relationship. because they are able to recognize and partially acknowledge how they feel about each other much earlier, they actually are able to hurt one another with the same depth as jiang cheng and wei wuxian. this means that it's now got to be a relationship where such apologies are necessary-- though as you say, not with as much lingering guilt as there would be with something like a core transfer. the words have to be said (and thus a new "moral" about what those phrases mean), but all that's needed are words: there's no permanently lingering baggage to weigh down the relationship forever and make it, as you suggest and as i totally agree, impossible.

As far as headcanons and fanfic, sangcheng. I love them together. I'm obsessed with them. Still going over 3 years later, I've written more fic for them than for any other ship. At heart, it's the teenage friends to lovers aspect, but also that they each, on their own have gone through so much loss and pain and anger... including JC's anger at NHS for putting Jin Ling in danger, no, I never forget THAT. But I think after all that, they can understand each other better than most. They can understand the anger and pain and what you are willing to do for that.

And then if speaking strictly canon-based, there's chengxian, which is... everything that it is. Which is SO much. I don't write fic for it or seek it out, but I did very much go through the book reading JC as in love with WWX.

Where Lan Xichen was high in the Lan triads, powerful and feared, gaining the name of Zewu-jun. The last story about Zewu-jun was how he beat up many people from rival groups before just... disappearing!

stories of him being killed, sent to jail or moving to another country are travelling around while no one in the Lan group will confirm anything.

But lxc isn't dead, far from it.

He is playing house husband for a hard-working salaryman He fell head over heels for the beautiful Jiang Cheng the very moment he saw him, taking his nephew out as a reward for being a good boy.

Cue a scary, but polite, man trying to seduce the tired uncle.

Jc is a bit unsure at first, but quickly finds the man intriguing and nice.

Wanting to be with jc without pulling him into a world he doesn't belong in is what caused him to want to get out of it.

Some wouldn't believe that the great Zewu-jun was now a house husband, cooking diligently for his husband, taking care of the house, loving two little boys after another one joined the weird family.

jc and the boys even got used to how weirdly lxc could speak sometimes as if he was talking about criminal activities. but this makes him endearing to jc, who finds it funnier than anything when he knows what he's talking about. The boys sure seem to be amused too.

lxc: then you cut it into little pieces, stuff it into the little bag and dump it into hot what, then the job is nearly done

For the ask game: If you ship it at all, I'd love your take on Wen Ning/Jiang Cheng. I personally think that WN telling him the truth would move WN to the "possibly trustworthy??? review later" pile of people and the "unwilling recipient of WWX's unilateral decisions" list, and that their shared hobby of being worried about the juniors would afford JC the chance to observe WN.

Anyway, I love the political fantasy of For What, For All But Myself so much. And I love JC's confusion about LXC's letters. And everything else!

As a general rule I go along with most ships - I can't really think of one I'd actively avoid, it depends on the story whether I'll read it or not.

That being said, I'm not big on NingCheng - but some fics have convinced me it might be doable, but usually in Modern AUs or where things are completely different from the start. In those cases I can see it working out, two younger siblings bonding over over bearing older siblings, or being in the same class and JC not liking WN being bullied/WN being nice to JC when he's having a rough time - sure, I've no objections. Them pairing up in canon, or after canon, I struggle to see how it happens.

The thing for me about the GC reveal is WN went out of his way to be as callous and cruel as possible, knowing he was definitely going to hurt JC badly, and I think he enjoyed it in the moment. Maybe he started to feel bad later, but in the moment I think he enjoyed getting to do that to someone he doesn't like.

I just can't see how JC moves past that. He might accept that JL is sorta safe around him, he might let WN into LP to appease WWX, but I struggle to see how he gets from the soul wrenching anger and hate he feels to anything more positive.

To lean into my own version of them, I have tried and tried to make them make peace in the Burn Series that For What is a part of, and every time JC either starts yelling or runs away. He doesn't feel safe around WN, because WN not only killed JZX and could be taken over again and used as a weapon, he's shown himself to be vicious and poisonous with his words when he wants to be. And don't forget, WN saw what the Wen did to JC, he watched it all, and JC is absolutely terrified that one day WN will decide that he doesn't feel like keeping that secret anymore. If he could spill his beloved Wei-gongzi's secret to hurt JC, he would surely think nothing of spilling JC's to hurt him.

It's a clash between JC's observations that WN will protect the juniors, will protect WWX, the understanding that WN was also a victim of WWX's choices, that WN saved him and got his parents bodies back, and his deep seated fear of WN's knowledge, his hatred of him for being the ones WWX chose, and the unforgettable mental and emotional scar that was the reveal.

As the series stands I can't see them ever getting along, it's more teeth gritting silence on both sides for the sake of the others. But you never know, I might get them to coolly courteous one day!

TL;DR As characters they could be very cute as a couple, but you'd probably need to change the whole narrative around them to make it happen.

Sexuality Headcanon:

Idk I think he has like, a complicated relationship with sex and the concept of desire? Like, he's not opposed to the idea of sex, if it happens to come up (heh), but it's not something that he feels driven to seek out on his own. His relationship with sex is kind of like my relationship with chutney, I think? Like, if there's no chutney, that's fine. I won't go buy chutney, or go looking for chutney, and I don't feel like my food is incomplete without the chutney, but if the chutney is there? If it's readily available right at the table? I'm not saying I've accidentally put so much chutney on a burger that the patty fell out and I didn't notice, but I'm not not saying that either, you know?

Honestly, I think his sexuality can be best described as 'lazy'.

Gender Headcanon:

I think he has a complicated relationship with his own gender, in that he probably thinks his father would have preferred Jiang Yanli to be the sect heir, but Jiang Cheng was The Son, and therefore he, who was much too much like Madam Yu to please his father, was the heir. So it's not that he's genderspicy or whatever, it's just that he doesn't particularly like being a man and feels that his life might have been simpler if he'd been a girl and JYL had been a boy. Madam Yu would have enjoyed having an extremely cunty daughter, I think, and not being The Heir would have meant there would be less pressure on him to be So Grownup All The Time.

A ship I have with said character:

So like, I think he loved Wei Wuxian a lot, but I don't necessarily think it was romantic? But I can be convinced because honestly, Jiang Cheng is not well about Wei Wuxian and that can manifest in many ways. One ship that I do love for him, however, is Jin Guangyao. I just think...look, these boys are both fucking feral for family. The depths of their loyalty...it's insane. Like, do you know how much abuse it took for Jin Guangyao to turn on NMJ? three murder attempts, it's insane. And I think that him and Jiang 'casually carrying around my brother's flute thirteen years later incase he needs it' would actually be very good for each other. Of course you would either have to go poly or somehow short-circuit JGY meeting Lan Xichen, but it can work, and it can work really well!

A BROTP I have with said character:

Okay, hear me out on this one: Lan Xichen. I just...I don't see them romantically at all, but I think that they could be extremely good friends, if the stars align properly. Because I think Lan Xichen would enjoy having someone around who hasn't fallen on his mouth, and his gremlin side would appreciate Jiang Cheng's cunty side, while I think Jiang Cheng would appreciate having a friend like LXC.

A NOTP I have with said character:

Look, it's a free Internet and everyone can do what they want, but pairing him with Lan Xichen just confuses me. Like, why? Jin Guangyao is right there and him and LXC are obviously in love, and they've had 20 years in canon to be more than Some Dude to each other, and there's no evidence they ever did. But like, if it makes people happy, that's cool!

There are still no dogs at Lotus Pier.

The thing about Jin Guangyao and Wei Wuxian is that if they completely swapped lives almost nothing about their character would change. Jin Guangyao would still be a ruthless people pleasing politician and Wei Wuxian would still attempt the impossible. It's the world around them that would change.

This idea is forms the base of a fic I want to someday write.

The fist change is JGY's introduction to Lotus Pier. Since like WWX he was raised on the streets JGY has a deathly fear of dogs. Unlike WWX he is a good actor and unwilling to do anything that rocks the boat with the Jiang family so he (rather poorly) pretends that his fear isn't that bad. This means that the dogs aren't leaving. Which is really really bad for JGY so he had to get rid of the source of his fear. First he tries and fails to convince JC to not bring the dogs near him. Clearly there is only one option left to him. Killing those puppies. So yeah JGY poisons those dogs.

When considering JGY's relationship with the Jiang family we must remember that this is the man that killed Jin Guangshan and his martial brother Nie Mingjie. He is absolutely ruthless when it comes to revenge and is willing to go to any length to acquire political power. In short within a day of meeting Madam Yu he is already contemplating how to kill her. Within a week he loathes Jiang Cheng. In a month he is plotting how to take over Lotus Pier.

Luckily for everyone he understands that it is going to take a lot of time to pull this off and is willing to bide his time. His first objective is to become the first disciple and gain all of Lotus Pier's respect. He is not going to become 'like family' to the Jiangs.

Meanwhile WWX is having a far better childhood. His mom is alive and loves him so much. Meng Shi deeply cares for her child's education teaching him how to play the guqin, reading and writing, chess, essentially everything she knows and giving him what cultivational manuals she can find. WWX soaks this all up like a sponge.

He is still from Yiling. I can't change this.

Timeskip!

JGY is headed to the Cloud Recesses and he is going to make so many allies and friends. He can't take over Lotus Pier without some type of outside backing afterall. In the years since coming to Lotus Pier JGY has not gotten closer to JC. If anything their relationship had gotten even worse. Unlike WWX JGY is actively trying to outdo and be better than JC especially in front of Jiang Fengmian. They have a very unfriendly rivalry.

Upon arriving JGY asks Lan Xicheng for some music lesson and if he has any advice for musical cultivation. They quickly become friends. LXC introduces JGY to his friend Nie Mingjue. Nie Mingjue takes a bit longer to warm up to JGY but not much. Eventually even confiding in JGY about his worries on how his older brother Nie Huaisang is leading the clan.

JC meanwhile has made no friends, punched the heir of the Jin Clan in the face, and got sent home in disgrace. Everything is going great for JGY.

------

Meanwhile WWX is struggling to figure out cultivation. By talking to rouge cultivators, and consulting unreliable cultivation manuals, WWX has made some progress but he just cannot create a golden core. He just does not have enough information, guidance, or time to focus on it.

Making talismans hasn't gone much better. There just isn't enough information on the process. The talismans he creates are unreliable at best, though he did stumble on how to create a spirit attraction flag.

While he hasn't made much progress on musical cultivation he is an excellent musician and has made money doing that.

His efforts to cultivate have resulted in WWX being able to sense spiritual and resentful energy, mastery of archery, and a somewhat faulty spiritual attraction talisman.

When he hears about fierce corpses ravaging someone's farm he heads over there hoping that he could help a little. He gets a lot more than he bargained for and ends up in a tree with fierce corpses surrounding him. Trying to keep himself awake until morning he starts playing his dizi. Somehow music is effecting the resentful energy of the fierce corpses. After a lot of experimentation and a solid two days in that tree he manages to control the fierce corpses. Which seems useful.

It's weird that not one of the rouge cultivators one mentioned this method of musical cultivation. Not knowing or caring that what he is doing is impossible WWX starts picking up some minor cultivational odd jobs.

Things are looking up.

Archery Contest Time

Neither JC or JGY stop to help Wen Ning at archery. An innocuous action that will have no consequences.

For the first time JGY meets Lan Wangji, Lan XiChing's older and talented brother. He spend a lot of time Nighthunting in remote areas helping out with any spirit no matter how minor or dangerous, because of this he is greatly respected but it is unclear if he will become Sect leader.

Meanwhile WWX is improving rapidly when it comes to demonic cultivation. He is gaining more and more respect in Yiling and his tailsmans are becoming more and more reliable.

Unfortunately, his Mom is not well. She has coughing spells, getting dizzy, is losing her appetite, and is just keeps getting worse.

He meet and helps out Wen Ning with his archery. Apperently the Wen Clan is setting up a supervisory office in Yiling and his sister is in charge of it. The two of them quickly become friends.

Wen Ning after hearing about Meng Shi's illness brings her to his sister. Not only does she immediately diagnoses the issue Wen Qing gives them the medicine for free as it they wouldn't afford it otherwise. Another action that will have no consequences later.

Xuanwu of the Slaughter

JGY is not getting involved with this shit. The Wen Clan only needs the heir and he is not putting his life on the line for JC. While Jiang Chang is gone he is going to try and convince Jiang Fengming to start preparing for the inevitable Wen invasion. They aren't going to stop with the Cloud Recesses.

While they don't manage to kill it Nie Mingjue and Lan XiChang manage to successfully survive the death turtle.

Meanwhile Lan Zhan has sucessfully escaped with the clan's scrolls. He is nearly cornered but Wei Wuxian helps him escape. As Lan Zhan is injured he must temporarily hide out with WWX.

Dispite all the horrible things that lead up to this Lan Zhan finds himself almost enjoying this. It's just really nice to talk to Wei Ying. He is smart, funny, kind, good with kids, and really hot.

Lan Zhan teaches WWX the last steps to forming a golden core, and allows him to read the scrolls from cloud recesses. WWX asks so many questions that LWJ has never even considered and somehow managed to control resentful energy. They play duets together.

This is perhaps the worst possible time to get a crush but somehow Lan Zhan does.

Eventually he has to leave. LWJ has to go defend his clan and his brother. With hesitancy he asks WWX to join him. WWX refuses as his Mom isn't fully cured, he owes Wen Ning and Wen Qing, and doesn't have a clan he needs to fight for.

Lan Zhan knew that would likely be his answers and decides to leave the scrolls in WWX's possession where he knows they will be safe. Strangely the strongest reason that WWX is so happy about this is that this mean that Lan Zhan will definitely return to him.

This is the worst time for WWX to ever get a crush.

Jiang Clan invasion

The Wen Clan makes up a different reason to invade.

JGY being the scheming bastard that he is makes a deal with the Wen. The lives of Jiang Fengming and Madam Yu and Lotus Pier for the lives of the disciples, their swords and supplies.

Somehow in the chaos Jiang Cheng loses his core. JGY for sure had nothing to do with this. He also had nothing to do with Jiang Cheng getting maul to death by dogs. After JGY is deathly afraid of dogs and had multiple alibis.

No one suspects anything. JGY get away with murder and is now in charge of the remnants of Lotus Pier. He achieved his dream but he can't celebrated until they win the war against the Wen.

The Sunshot Campaign

Losses are really really heavy without WWX'x corpse army and the war takes far longer. It only ends after Wen Rouhan is assassinated by Nie Huaisang.

Meanwhile WWX is swamped with work, studying, and inventing.

He finally has a reliable source of information of cultivation and that is doing wonders for WWX inventions and progress. Most of his time is spent night hunting since the sects are too busy killing each other to nighthunt. He gain some renown for this even outside of Yiling.

He is dearly missing Lan Zhan and writes some terrible poetry about it.

Mount BaiFeng Nighthunt

Lan Zhan has not managed to talk much with Wei Wuxian after the war. The met up to take back the scrolls and have been writing letters to each other. But the rebuilding of cloud recesses has taken up much of Lan Zhan's time, so this is the first time that they will be night hunting together.

Lan Zhan is far too nervous about this. He has been on many nighthunts and Wei Ying is now a respected rouge cultivator.

Wei Ying shows up a day early and spends all of that time with Lan Zhang. He is very confident about the night hunt to come and has developed a few new inventions for it.

When the day of the nighthunt comes Wei Ying destroys 80% of the prey of BaiFeng Mountain.

People accuse him of cheating, but Lan Zhan defends him as well as the new leader of the Jiang Sect, JGY. JGY does this out of pure pragmatism immediately noticing the value of WWX's inventions.

WWX gains renown as a cultivator and inventor, sells all of his available talismans and compasses, and gets an offer to join the Jiang Sect (he refuses it). Soon the all the Sects start to rely on his inventions.

The Wen Remnants

Wen Qing asks WWX for help finding her brother.

They do. Things get violent. WWX leaves with 50+ refugees. All per usual.

The main difference is this. The Sects lost almost all of their man power in the war. It would be nearly impossible to maintain their duties without WWX inventions to make up the differences, so no one not even the Jin clan want to make him an enemy for purely economic reasons.

Eventually JGY negotiates a deal. The Wen clan will remain with WWX in return WWX will need to double his supply of compasses and spirit attraction flags to the Sects. This will be easy to do since the Wen remnants will aide him in this task.

And so WWX lives happily ever after with the remnants and his eventual husband Lan Zhan.

JGY also lives happily and no one ever discovers that he killed all of the Jiang family (except Yanil) let alone takes revenge for their deaths.

anywho i’m looking for a specific fic (or was it series?) where the premise is the swords are spirits that can manifest in a human body. wwx is one such sword called suibian, as is lwj. the story starts (i think) with wwx being jc’s sword and they don’t really get along/harmonise (big surprise)

there’s some world building of a story of xxc being a self wielding sword and getting tricked by xy and either doing bad stuff and then dying or just dying.

uh it ends with wwx and lwj proving to the golden tower (the peeps that hold the swords because they’re too innocent or whatevs to be alone out in the wild) that they can handle their own. there’s a line in there about how they’re not self-wielding swords, but swords that wield each other.

wwx was previously lwj’s human under the name wwx something one or both of them forgot.

there’s some scene after about wwx meeting jc’s new sword and there being some antagonism between them (new sword throwing tantrum and wwx being chaotic but solving the problem as usual)???

think author said it was inspired slightly by touken ranbu? or some other sword person anime/game thing?

There's a scene where LQR is talking about talismans, and has WWX take out all of the talismans he has on him. They became curious about wwx, they found his journal and he kept talking about this certain friend eventually they found out the friend's name is lan zhan lan wangji. Time skip they found out that Iwj reincarnated, he looks exactly the same as wwx's friend. Lxc said it was impossible cuz all their ancestors died because of an explosion that was caused by wwx back in the day.

There is this spefic scene, wwx kept blaming himself because he was the reasom why Iz died, ok so Iz married a woman (arranged marriage) and had child with her, wy was heartbroken and told Iz that he has feelings for him, Iz also has feelings for him, so when Iz heard that the sects will have a siege in burial mounds he went there and protected wy then something happened and the surroundings explode.

So, with the new update of the manhua showing LXC telling WWX about the things that LWJ went through, the fandom once again is bringing up the discourse of “you were his one mistake” and hating on LXC. They are saying that he is talking crap about WWX, while knowingly letting JGY do heinous crimes and giving him information on LWJ’s feelings and therefore his weakness for WWX. Funny how they keep hating on LXC for literally one sentence, when the man was probably the biggest facilitator in getting LWJ and WWX together, and also seem to ignore that this speech which includes that line they hate so much is the reason that wangxian finally came to be.

But hey, LXC is apparently a monster who hates WWX and should suffer and bla bla bla

First, from a past ask I received:

I can very, very much understand why people would have a distaste for Lan Xichen as a character. He like many of the others are able to preach of the good while failing to actually practice it or really ever meet the basics of it when they did have the tools for it and just stepped back. I think it sort of entails “what manner of person am I able to respond to better”, when it comes to a myopia of social blindness and privilege.

I do not think Lan Xichen is a bad guy, or even morally bankrupt. I think he is naive, very blind to the worst in life, and a bit selfish given he does love others, but he is not the best at expressing when to keep his mouth shut and being unsure of what he himself should do. He has very very little worldly experience to understand a lot of harsh truths and can callously say things, even if that isn’t his intention. We see this when he casually says that Wei Wuxian has changed, which just ends up him completely misconstruing his own brother’s turmoil and worries for Wei Wuxian. He does this again with Wei Wuxian in Guanyin Temple, calling him his brother’s life’s mistake.

The exact words being, “这辈子唯一犯下的一个错误就是你!”, The only mistake he made in this life was you!“

The fun little thing about 犯/fàn, in connection to 错误/cuò wù is that is very very accusatory, it is mean, it is not a simple accusation of a problem, it means a criminal offense, which is what Lan Wangji had committed in the eyes of the Lans, and was a ruination of the little brother that Lan Xichen always could reassure by himself, or so he thought. This speech is him being as biting as he can (well for a Lan), to someone he sees as causing pain for years to his brother. All while he himself has, and continued to, treat Lan Wangji as a child. He is mocking a bit in his surety of his friend while he admits that he saw his brother’s trust in Wei Wuxian as wrong. It’s not calling Wei Wuxian just some sort of minor inconvenience, he is saying he is what had ruined his brother’s prestige and ideal daoist reputation for something so worldly.

But I think he is one for realization and can pursue that to apologize and really try to reach out to Wei Wuxian to understand him as family given he in no way decried their marriage as false. He in the least seems shocked at his own fall out and consequences for what had happened. His foundation he was sure in was broken in just a few hours. That’s a massive blow for an ego, but he tries, and seclusion at any rate, or the way he is practicing it is healthy and he knows what mistakes he himself had made as he reflects. His lesson is that he has much to learn, I don’t think that is a bad end for him at all.

As for the rest, he didn't want these two to be together, he thought that once he knew "Mo Xuanyu" was Wei Wuxian, he had been, in his eyes, continuing to be cruel to Lan Wangji. He made assumptions on very little information very unjustly while earlier within the book mocking Lan Wangji's absolute trust in Wei Wuxian next to Jin Guangyao who he had known for longer. I don't quiet agree that he was the tipping point for them to get together, after all the reason they had sex to begin with was impulsive and just off of Jiang Cheng's very homophobic and accusatory words mocking their feelings for each other. If Jiang Cheng previously hadn't mocked them, I feel it would have been a far smoother confession without anyone intervening to tell them about their outside perceptions. Lan Xichen included.

He is not the catalyst of anything just yet another factor that Wei Wuxian finally discarded to really let his feelings be known openly once and for all after the countless rumors everyone seemed to make up for them. It is him taking his own romance into his hands and not letting any of them assume for them without their say.

god it kills me that i cannot help you much, if at all. i haven't read a xicheng fics in months (maybe possibly a whole year) now which means all my recs are definitely fics i've already mentioned before AND i know none of those have even a sprinkle of the kind of dynamic you're looking for, mostly because i tend to lean towards post-canon xicheng and at that point it would be hard to have a starry-eyed jiang cheng lmao

I always imagined jzx would ironically be the one to "mature up" sooner than jiang cheng but usually that's because of jin ling and just altogether with the way his life took a turn (also having newfound brother jgy now that he wants to make feel included), lot of stuff to soften him up and open up cause they are good and not opening up to it would keep them away. it's always a great struggle how to make chengxuan happen where jin ling is still a thing and so there's usually only few options: 1) xuanli still happened but it was before jzx was true to himself so they're all well but not "together" anymore, jin ling still happened 2) yanli was a surrogate for chengxuan (though somehow i can't see jiang cheng agreeing to raising a child beforehand) 3) yanli had an accident and chengxuan bonded over taking care of baby jin ling and her loss 4) jin ling is jzx's little brother 5) mpreg!jzx 6) jin ling was rescued or found/adopted by coincidence, it'll very much depend on the scenario but it'd be somewhere wher chengxuan are either un-wanted part of bad guys group (criminal empire AUs, pirates, etc) or are the "good guys" (IDK like firefighters or soldiers or cops or something, "good" is in like...it's suppossed to be a good proffession lol) and find him in a dangerous situaiton 7) the story/fic takes place before jin ling and we don't worry about him or there's no jin lings and we're sad

jingzhui isn't on the chart but they're also both inner lan clan members. so. weird to me! i like ling/yi best. they banter a lot but still get along well as friends

i can see why people are compelled by wen ning and wwx. i love their fucked up codependency too. i just don't see it romantically

i also see why people might ship cheng/xian, i just sincerely think their relationship is most compelling as siblings or pseudo-family due to the social class tensions.

chang/mian is quite rare just bc both characters are so minor but like... god can you imagine all the jiang cheng & wwx parallels. pointing. those are their dads

sang/cheng is like... most of the time it feels very pair the spares-esque. BUT. they both have a lot of similarities underneath the surface and if people tap into that i do like it. BUT (again) i just really prefer it platonic. jiang cheng is like peak "this man is aroace and does not know what either of those words are" to me. celibacysweep and all that

sang/yao. honorable mention to my favorite fucked up ship that literally nobody ships (including myself!). i can't like em romantically, only enjoy the dynamic, but it's so fun to think about. like spy x spy but worse.

COME ON. they have zero personal ties except for the fact that their brothers are deeply in love and have a torrid romance spanning decades

for lxc especially this just feels like such a weak ship to me bc you have TWO whole other people he has fascinating, actually existing dynamics with (nmj and jgy), and xi/yao especially has so so so many parallels to wang/xian. 3zun ships have so much angst and what-ifs and there's so much more meat to it.

see also my thing about jc just... honestly i cannot see him romantically working out with anyone. nobody. whatsoever. this is a man for whom romance is not the solution, ever

so i can't. it literally drives me crazy. i cannot make sense out of xi/cheng whatsoever it doesn't compel me one bit and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say i hate it when there are other ships right there ahahahghdskljfdslk
