background story ;

casey was the first born son of corey rutherford and amalie peterson in brisbane, an accident if you must, as his parents never intended to have him. his mother lived in sweden but was in australia visiting some relatives when she met corey, one thing lead to another, and nine months later, casey came along

his mother was infatuated with his father, while his father liked his mother, but not in the way that she liked him. regardless, his family forced him to marry amalie to give casey a ‘stable’ life, but it was anything but that

growing up, casey really loved his mother. the same thing couldn’t be said for his father. from a fairly young age, he got the feeling that his father considered him the reason that he was ‘forced’ to stay with his mother, treated him like garbage, making casey strongly dislike him from early on

he was emotionally abusive, to him and to his mother. casey didn’t know why she stayed with him. things were cool when it was just him and his mother, but as soon as his father came along, the vibe shifted

things only worsened when amalie became pregnant again, with casey’s little brother, lukas, who was five years younger than casey. from that moment on, casey was determined to defend his little brother from whatever emotional abuse his father could even think to throw at him

but when lukas grew a little older, they knew that he was different. he didn’t like to talk much and whenever he did, it was avoiding eye contact. he didn’t like to be touched often, he had melt downs, and well, after several tests and doctor visits later, lukas was diagnosed with autism

from that moment on, things drastically changed. his father didn’t know how to handle the news and ended up leaving. his mother didn’t have much in australia without him, so she moved back to stockholm with casey and lukas when casey was ten and lukas was five, where thankfully, lukas got the treatment he deserved

casey thought this move was for the better, but things only seemed to worsen from that moment on. his mother was severely depressed over what his father did and on some days, refused to even get out of bed

casey was forced to become an adult when he was just a kid himself. clean up the house, look after his little brother and mother, it was really hard for him, and as much as he loved his mother, she only added onto the baggage he felt forced to carry

as soon as he was old enough, he had a job. between going to school, working, and practically being the parent in the house, he always lacked sleep, he was always tired, but he swears, he worked really hard than anyone his age, it’s not like he had a choice

it was a lot to deal with, and soon enough, he was finding ways to try and stay up. coffee only worked for so long, even strong shots of espresso became nothing to him. through this desire to try and stay awake during long shifts and school, well, this… this is how he discovered the ‘wonders’ of adderall, through one of his classmates who would sell his prescription to make an extra buck. casey soon realized that it worked perfectly for his dilemma, it kept him going for ages

so this is how he became a frequent customer. it was an unhealthy habit of red bull, adderall, under eating, not sleeping, repeat – he was practically a zombie at one point. this went on for a while. a little over a year of this unhealthy cycle is when it caught up to him, in the worst possible way

! tws for hospitals, eating disorder and stroke ! to be clear, he can’t recall a lot of what happened beforehand. the headache, the dimness in his vision, soon followed by him passing out, are all very faint memories in his head. the thing casey remembers most is waking up in a hospital, and being informed that he had a stroke… a stroke. he was also told he had malnutrition and was underweight which was most likely linked to an eating disorder and his abuse of adderall, but he didn’t hear anything else, all he heard was stroke. frankly, he didn’t even think someone his age could have a stroke, it was all really scary news for him. this happened two months before his graduation, and thankfully, he had all the credits needed before this, but he still had to finish school virtually

the aftermath of it all is what sucked the most for him. the therapies, medications and countless check ups even though he swears, he felt fine, the way his family was treating him like he was made of paper or something, even his grandmother, aka his mother’s mother, got involved, which was a huge mess because all she did was blame his mother for dumping all of their problems on casey and causing all this. long story short, but his grandmother didn’t think his mother was mentally well enough to take care of casey and lukas, which wasn’t exactly a lie. after casey’s graduation, they moved with her to her house in new york, which his mother didn’t even fight her on, claiming she had to work on herself

and as much as he didn’t want to admit it because a part of him really missed his mother and he didn’t blame her for what happened, but, casey really liked new york, as much as he wanted to hate it. he felt a lot calmer there, he wasn’t constantly stressed over taking care of his little brother, or his mother, and still finding a way to make ends meet, he was done with high school, eighteen, had everything in his favor, took a gap year but didn’t travel the way other people do, really just focused on his therapies and bettering himself, focused on writing and playing the piano and sundae sundays with his grandmother and little brother, practically became a whole different person ( crazy how not being completely stressed 24/7 can drastically change someone )

he ended up going back to school when he was nineteen, to nyu to be exact, majors in literature because he wants to be a writer, even if it won’t make him much money in the long run

he really had no intention of ever going into the spotlight. even with his first published book heart shaped box ( literally his pride and joy, a horror novel he’s been working on for over three years ), he only made a decent following on social media when his book hit new york’s best seller list, with most of his followers being book nerds which, he was okay with. he just wanted to write and hopefully one day, publish another book. he didn’t care if he made it to the best seller’s list again or not, he just wanted to do something he was passionate about and stay under the radar

anyways, long story short but that under the radar shit doesn’t end up happening when he meets abel in nyu, when he’s twenty one. they date for a little under a year before he says he has to leave and then just… stops answering casey’s texts and calls altogether, whatever, fuck him, is all casey can think. but then people somehow find out they dated and he starts getting all this attention because they used to date and really, he didn’t even know abel had that influencer status, so the attention just annoys him. he feels like he’s worked so hard to even get his first book published and instead of being only recognized for that, he gets recognized for dating a boy, literally… wants to stab himself with a fork

the past two and a half years have just been him working on another novel, and a comic book, illustrated by his little brother, that he has hopes of finishing and hopefully releasing one or the other by next year. now the question is, will people soon enough recognize him for his talent in literature, or will he forever be known as ‘that guys ex boyfriend’?

headcanons ;

he’s a vegan! became one about five months after he had a stroke and has never looked back. his health has gotten a lot better since then, been a vegan for over five years already

casey really doesn’t like entitled people who have just had stuff handed to them and never had to work for anything, so basically... most nepo babies let’s be real. he’s had to work really hard for everything, even getting his book published was hard as hell, and then lots of people recognize him for a guy he dated forever ago rather than his hard work which really, really makes him angry

he isn’t a mean guy, he’s really patient and kind and understanding and will never be rude unless provoked, but if you get him to a certain level of angry, he can literally be the worst person ever. very nice and sweet and people tend to think they can walk all over him because of that, but if you really do something to upset him, he’s like a different person. black and white in that sense if you must because he can go from one extreme to the other, especially if you’re a mean or manipulative person, he see’s right through that shit

he writes about anything, romance, science fiction, fantasy, but his favorite genre is fantasy and horror based. his career claim is similar to joe hill, and his upcoming comic book will basically be the first comic of the ‘locke & key’ series, basically joe hill but modern day

he doesn’t tell people he had a stroke. mostly because he doesn’t want sympathy, but also because he wants to make a new life here. no one really knows about his life in sweden. no one really knows about his life before he was eighteen and he likes it that way

doesn’t do anything besides occasionally smoke weed ( boring boy i guess ), mostly out of health but also because he has alcohol intolerance. alcohol, even in small amounts, makes him really sick so he prefers to just avoid it, obviously would never go to serious drugs because that incident he went through scarred him

he see’s his little brother frequently, he’s literally the illustrator of the comics he plans on publishing soon enough. he has a really big soft spot for little kids, especially if they have special needs. he would probably be an amazing dad if he ever decides to go that route

he loves music, especially old school music. the idea for heart shaped box literally came to him when he was listening to heart shaped box by nirvana. he has a very old soul, literally owns a type writer and a vinyl player

he has a female dog named opal, named after his favorite australian stone, opal. the dog is a goldendoodle, he loves this dog with his entire heart, she is two

the rumor in his app is true. he once was undergoing a mental breakdown so bad, he impulsively shaved his head and eyebrows, it was a true monstrosity. this happened like four months after his break up with abel, so he was around twenty two. thankfully, hair grows back because otherwise... no comment

wanted connections ;

heart shaped box lover: a book lover or horror fanatic who liked his novel and just wants to be his friend, wholesome connection

it’s meant to be, look, we’re both vegans!: simply put, a fellow vegan. watch them go to vegan restaurants together and let each other know about the hottest vegan spots

not your biggest fan: someone who doesn’t like him. could be because they think he’s boring, because they think his book sucked or because they just don’t like him, i’m open to it all

dog sitters: someone who walks their dog at the exact same time as he does, and they’ve just bonded over their pets, bonus if their dogs really like each other

devil on my shoulder: a bad influence, or at least, tries to be because he isn’t easily convinced. a muse who just wants him to let loose

former college friends: someone he went to college with, they could be friends or not

...perhaps something more?: maybe friends with benefits, one night stands, something romantic?

Cursed

(From an extremely cursed Star Wars AU, based on this post. Happy Birthday, Takashi!)

Tatiana leans back in her seat and tries to relax. Discussing things with the council had never been one of her strong suits, and since joining the jedi council, that hadn’t improved very much. Still, at least the discussion for today was over.

Although just because the official meeting was over didn’t mean she could leave just yet. She watches Weir and Lexi discuss something on the other end of the room, waiting for them to stop so she could have a word.

Out of the corner of her eye, she sees Lizzie start to head of of the room, but as she opens the door another, smaller figure runs into the room.

“Maminka!” Cecily shouts, drawing the attention of everyone in the room as she runs at her.

Despite her exhaustion, despite the meeting, despite everything, Tatiana slides out of her seat in a fluid motion and kneels just in time to catch her daughter in a warm hug. She leans back and cups Cecily’s face in her hands, smiling down at her, though not without a hint of confusion in her expression. “Aren’t you supposed to be with Dad?” she asks her quietly.

“You said I could come in when the Jedi weren’t talking, and you weren’t, so I came in,” she retorts defiantly. She crosses her arms and tries to put the most serious face on she can.

Tatiana cannot help but to laugh and pat her on the cheek gently. “You’ve got me there,” she says. “What did you want?”

Cecily steps back and triumphantly holds up a piece of paper to show off her drawing. “It’s you and me and Dad and Tomáš!” she explains cheerfully.

“Oh, it’s beautiful!” Tatiana praises. She loops an arm around Cecily’s body and pulls her back in for another hug. “We’ll hang it on the wall when we get home.”

“Musilová,” someone says lowly beside them.

Tatiana looks up, only to be greeted by the rage-filled glare of Takashi. She offers her a fake smile as she gathers Cecily up in her arms and stands up to face her.

“Yes, Master Lund?” she asks, false sweetness in her voice.

Takashi glances pointedly at Cecily, now hugging Tatiana’s neck to try and escape the other woman’s glare. “Is that your daughter?” she asks.

Tatiana hesitates for a heartbeat, trying to find something, anything to say. “I have no idea who this child is,” she says.

They stare at each other for a long moment, and Tatiana does shy away from her glare.

“Excuse me,” Takashi says at last. She brushes by her and storms out of the council room, not so much as glancing to anyone else in the room..

Slowly the atmosphere lifts again and people start to chatter once more. Lexi finishes her conversation with Weir a bit abruptly and follows Takashi out of the room, glaring at Tatiana while she passed her.

She shrugs it off and goes to chat with Weir, Cecily still safely curled in her arms.

“I heard Takashi and Lexi destroyed half a building this afternoon,” John says casually as they’re relaxing on the sofa. “Know anything about that?”

Tatiana shrugs. “You know how council meetings go. No one’s ever really happy,” she replies.

He throws her a suspicious glance.

Geir Lundsonn, or “Geir Lund” was the son of the warrior Lund Hring, who hailed from the Jørgen Dynasty, rulers in the lands of Svealand. Geir was also the descendant of a warrior who had been on the expedition that led to the discovery of lands that would eventually become the City State of Wexford (or Veisafjǫrðr.)

Geir’s ancestral family, while not ruling in Wexford, did maintain a high importance status until King Æthelred Sargenis of Doar, great-grandfather of Maxim Sargenis, took over Wexford from the Northmen as retaliation when the Northmen began to raid several towns in Doar. Since then, Wexford belonged to the Kingdom of Doar, and served them. Lund Hring murdered his way to the top of the ranks in Wexford, rebelled, and made an alliance with the enemies of Doar. He participated in a war which led to the deaths of King Markus Sargenis and his firstborn son. As the army leader of Wexford, however, he had become cruel towards his own men, sending them off to mission that were basically suicidal, not caring about their lives. He was eventually captured and imprisoned by his own men when it was clear he didn’t care for Wexford and its people, but rather used them as an excuse to return his family back to high status and glory. The people of Wexford, after losing many of their own in war, peacefully surrendered to King Markus’s wife, Queen Isabella, and pledged to her and her remaining children. While the people of Wexford began to warm up to House Sargenis thanks to Queen Isabella’s kindness (she allowed them to continue as a city state as long as they answered and paid their dues to her kingdom,) Lund Hring and his family grew to hate the Saxon superiors. Lund was able to get visits from his wife, and despite being in prison, he was able to impregnate his wife, who gave birth to Geir, the only child Lund would ever have. Geir was a young boy when his father was eventually executed for his crimes, ordered by House Sargenis. His mother got sickly and died a few years later. Geir’s hatred for the Sargenis and the Saxons was cemented then. He vowed to avenge his family, and restore Wexford back as an Northmen run city-state.

In the meantime, he rose in the ranks of the army of Wexford, becoming well liked and was trusted by Vali Kveldulf, general and good friend of Maxim Sargenis and his family. He even helped train his son, Svejn, when Vali took Geir at times to Doar to help train the armies there. Geir however, was behind the raids that once again began in the small towns of Doar. Because of this, Maxim Sargenis began to mistrust and strongly dislike Northmen in his kingdom, which caused a rift between he and his Danish general. Maxim Sargenis really began to lose favor with the people of Wexford when he threw out his adopted daughter Fay Rosen, who was a North woman. Geir used this incident to show the people that Maxim no longer was with on their side, as he had turned on the adopted daughter he was known to love and favor the most. This caused a divided opinion on Maxim Sargenis within the city. . . .

A great war happened, however, and upon the tragic death of Maxim Sargenis, Wexford was left leaderless and in shambles. While the Kingdom of Cornwall tried to take it at first, it left it to ruin due to the problems Wexford, now a rundown city of criminals, brought. Geir began to build up an army once again, and once they were strong enough, they took back the city from the criminals. Within this army was Jacob Adair, then eighteen years old. While Jacob Adair left Wexford to begin a life of crime, Geir was hailed as a hero and was elected as Jarl of Wexford. His rule as Jarl started off well he expanded their trade, grew their army, and took over more land, increasing Wexford’s power. He had a magificent sword with him at all times, encrusted with gold. Where it came from was a mystery, but it was regarded as a sign of great power and status. He was well liked as a Jarl overall. However, his fear of being overthrown grew with the years, and he began to instill more stricter rules on the people. It really got worse when Jacob Adair returned and began a better life alongside Carolina Blackwood of Snow Mystic. Jacob became more successful than him on raids, and his popularity grew quickly as a result. It hit a breaking point when it became known that Jacob was the son of Alexia “Lexi” Sargenis, daughter of beloved Queen Isabella Sargenis. That was when his paranoia truly began to unravel . . .

Geir’s rise to glory was stained with betrayal, lies, and a big secret, a secret that would crumble everything he had built. Though he didn’t know his father very well, the apple did not fall far from the tree. . .

CHUCK CLAIMED HE WAS ATTENDING AA MEETINGS ON A REGULAR BASIS. So each morning, Melvin stuck his nose right into Chuck’s open mouth and told him to breathe. These closed-door sessions were disguised as short, daily program meetings so as not to drum up any suspicion that something covert was going on. Not that anyone could have guessed that Chuck was allowing his superior to huff his morning breath.

“If he wasn’t such a weirdo, he’d buy a Breathalyzer,” Chuck told Lou over the phone one morning on his drive to work. “We can’t have beers at lunch anymore, and I try to have my last drink by ten so any trace of it is gone by the morning. I also sleep with three Life Saver in my mouth.”

“Aren’t you concerned you’ll choke?”

“Nah. Gina is spending the night pretty regularly. If I choke, she’s there to save me.”

“You could just brush your teeth, floss, use mouthwash. Not drink.”

“Nah.”

“Won’t you eventually have to show Melvin proof that you’re going to the meetings? Don’t they give you a chip or something?”

“I’m going to tell him that I don’t feel AA is right for me, but thanks to his faith and support I’ve been able to kick the bottle. All the guy wants is to be appreciated; feel like he saved someone. I’ll throw some of that bullshit his way.”

“You’re walking a thin line, man. How are things with Gina? Have you heard from Lexi at all?”

Lexi had asked him to lunch on a Saturday. He told her he was working on the magazine. She suggested Sunday. Same excuse. The truth was that he had plans to drive to Joshua Tree National Park with Gina. How about dinner at Bella’s next Monday might? she asked. He couldn’t avoid her forever, and he didn’t want to. There was a part of him that missed the dull sex and the Bible reading at bedtime.

Lexi was wearing new makeup and had a new hairstyle. He told her she looked pretty. She always looked pretty to him, but the makeup and hair, on top of not seeing her for a few months, made her seem like a new woman. It made her exciting to him again.

“I’ve been thinking,” she said.

“I’ve missed you.”

“If you want… we could… maybe we could see each other again. But take it slow, not rush into anything.”

It was what Chuck hoped she would say. But was it a good idea? What would he do about Gina? She was more or less living with him at the house, and he did not want to slow things down with her. Lexi still had her key and the garage code, and he had just made a key for Gina, who also knew the garage code. As nice as it was having both women around, there was a damn good chance that all of it could blow up in his face.

Maintaining a life of lies wasn’t easy. He had to watch the same romantic comedies twice. He had to regularly think of believable excuses about why either one couldn’t stay at the house. Gina began leaving her preferred groceries at the house, and Chuck would eat everything so that Lexi wouldn’t question why he had a box of Kashi cereal in the cabinet. Gina, then, was confused as to where her food went. She must have eaten it, he told her. Because he would never touch her food. That would be rude. Gina, worried she had developed a sleep-eating disorder, stopped buying groceries for his house. Chuck was, without malice, leading her toward a path of anorexia. But, hey, whatever kept the pantry clean.

Lexi traded the Bible for a libido, but what was even better was that she was still willing to help Chuck out with his finances. Even though his mother’s health was currently stable and wasn’t causing too many additional expenses at the moment, the interest rates on his credit cards and the outstanding medical bills were barely manageable. On top of that, the IRS began garnishing his wages. Because Liberty’s publisher didn’t deduct taxes from Chuck’s paychecks, Chuck chose to just not pay on what he earned. It was a proud stance of libertarianism. He ignored Lou’s and everyone else’s advice against it. “Screw the IRS,” he’d say. It didn’t matter to him that the publisher claimed the payroll and that the IRS would, at some point, come looking for what was due.

With the wage garnishment, Chuck’s take home from Tigris was little more than two-hundred bucks every two weeks. He obviously couldn’t pay any of his bills or rent with money like that. Lexi was giving him between five hundred and one thousand dollars every month. Most of that money went for his mom’s medical bills and to keep the utilities on in the house, put gas in his car and also to buy beer and pay for dates with Gina. He canceled the insurance on his car, stopped making the car-loan payment and quit paying Lou altogether.

Melvin was thrilled with the sobriety illusion Chuck created. Lexi was happy just to be with him and was confident he’d pay her back once his wages were returned to him in a few months. After Gina saw a text message from Lexi show up on Chuck’s phone, she knew the exes were talking again. But he assured her that the conversations were rare and that he wasn’t interested in dating Lexi. He even placated her with the idea of marriage when she brought it up one night over dinner.

He had built a sturdy fortress of bullshit, but cracks were starting to show.

They know about your mom and all that, so just pay the utilities and credit card companies. Those fuckers won’t give you a break. Michelle said I ought to evict you. Dad said I shouldn’t do that to a friend. And I never would. So don’t worry about it. Oh, Michelle… Sometimes I think she would have ratted out Anne Frank given the opportunity. What you need to be worried about is this two-timing thing you’ve got going. Even If you’re not worried about it, I sure as hell am, and it’s not making things any easier for me out here. Don’t make me worry about you. I can only barely manage one life going to shit at a time, and I called dibs. –LB

Thanks, buddy. I feel terrible about not paying. I should write a letter to your dad and grandpaw. I don’t know what to tell you about Michelle. You love her, so figure it out. Maybe when we get our shit back in order, she’ll be more understanding. Though, I’m not sure that’s fair. Taking the good with the bad and all that. I gotta get out of here. I’m about to fucking crack. This place is too hot for me right now. Nothing can go on the back burner because I’ve gone and set the goddamn kitchen on fire. Not your kitchen. You know what I mean. I need to figure this out. And I need to do it before I burn the whole fucking house down. And probably the block. I’m sorry. That probably made you worry. I’m a terrible friend. Everything will be fine. Everything. Just need some time and space to cool out.

HE LEFT WORK EARLY ON THURSDAY AND TOOK FRIDAY AS A VACATION DAY. He told Lexi and Gina that he would be working all weekend and couldn’t see them.

He swung by the house, changed clothes, packed a small bag with clean underwear, a toothbrush and half a dozen bottles of beer from the fridge, threw it in his car and took off up U.S. 95 northbound.

The only predetermined direction was straight. When he finished the six beers, he pulled into a gas station a few miles outside of the city limits and purchased a case of cans. He cracked the first one before pulling out of the parking lot. By the time he hit Tonopah, he was out of gas and nearly out of beer. While the BMW drank in the unleaded, Chuck purchased another case, a pack of cigarettes and a bag of beef jerky

“Are you sure you’re alright to be on the road tonight?” the clerk at the gas station asked.

“On the road is the only way to be alright.” Then he laughed. He took his change and handed it to the old woman with translucent blue hair sitting at the video slot machine near the door. “Take the change and flee!” He stormed out with the case under his arm and stuffed the pack of smokes and lighter into his mouth. He lit up before the gas finished pumping.

Chuck aimed the BMW to Highway 6 toward Warm Springs and onto the Extraterrestrial Highway. This stretch of road had long been his place of solace. Before heading north up to Hiko, he yanked the car onto the shoulder, threw it in park, grabbed the case of beer and climbed onto the roof. He lay on his back drinking while he looked for UFOs. The stars began to blur and spin in unusual patterns against the Earth’s rotation. Chuck’s beer-filled brain was in retrograde and to him, everything looked like a spaceship racing across the sky.

“E.T.!” he shouted into the blackness. “I see you. Can you see me? Come on down. I have a beer for you. You’ll like it. It’s from a place called Milwaukee.”

HE WOKE UP ON A SMALL COT SHOVED INTO A CORNER INSIDE OF A SMALL, CIGARETTE-SMOKE-STAINED ROOM. His glasses were on a rickety nightstand. Someone entered the room; a woman. She handed his glasses to him.

She was a petite, but big-breasted, blond Asian. “Am I dead?” Chuck asked.

“Hardly,” she said. “But I thought we might have to have your stomach pumped.”

“Where am I?”

“Starlight Ranch, sweetie. Do you remember me?”

“Fuck.” The Starlight Ranch was a whorehouse in Lund, a small town just outside of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forrest. “I’m sure my wallet will.”

“Unfortunately not. You didn’t want to party last night. I thought maybe you’d be up for it this morning.”

“So we didn’t?”

“Not yet.” She took a seat next to him on the bed and stroked his thigh over his jeans. “You kept mumbling something about too many pussies.”

“Yeah, that sounds about right.”

“And you kept buying drinks for an imaginary alien you said you found on the highway. One of our regulars tried to drink one of the beers you bought, but you threatened to kill him and anyone else who touched the beers. There are about thirteen or so glasses of warm beer waiting for you out there on the bar.”

“That sounds about right, too. I’m impressed we didn’t screw last night. You’re the woman of my dreams. I love Asian women. And blondes. And tits.”

“You called me your Zipper-Eyed Angel last night.”

Chuck laughed. “Sorry about that.”

“I’ve been called worse. Other than that, you were a total gentleman. Even ran a good couple games of pool and had the whole place dancing to the jukebox.”

“Were there a lot of people here?”

“Maybe a dozen. Mostly us girls.”

She and Chuck moved out to the bar. He grabbed one of the alien’s beers and chugged it down. She sat on a stool.

“What did you say your name was?” Chuck said.

“Starla.”

“Your real name.”

“Dakota.”

“Your real name.”

“Dakota. I’m a first generation. My parents were living in Sioux Falls at the time.”

“Jesus, that’s awful. Chinese?”

“Yes.”

“What were two Chinese immigrants doing in Sioux Falls?”

“Laundry business. Only Asian dry cleaners in the whole state. The newspaper even did a story about it.”

“Asians in Sioux Falls. Can’t say I would run that story.”

“Are you a newspaper man?”

“I’m the editor of a magazine. Back in Vegas.”

“What brought you out here?”

“Escape.”

“What from?”

“I don’t think my alien friend is going to claim these beers,” he told the bartender, a grizzled older woman. “You can toss them. I would love a fresh one, though.” He turned back to the Asian in response to her question. “What from? Everything. The job. The girls. The boss. The family.”

“The big city life, huh?”

“All I’ve ever wanted was to be able to take care of the people I care about. And I can’t do that. I’m actually hurting them.”

“My mom is sick. Heart problems. I put myself in the poorhouse taking care of her medical bills, which I can’t afford anymore. Can’t afford rent to my best buddy whose house I’m living in, the IRS is taking my wages for back taxes, and I’m letting my ex-girlfriend pay for all of it right now. At the same time, I’m also dating this other girl. My boss demanded I go into AA, which I’m obviously not doing, and generally, I’ve just sort of fucked myself. Because on top of the magazine, which is probably going to shut down if I don’t actually get back to working on it and get it out on time each month, I have a full-time day gig at the Tigris. That’s the boss who wants me in AA. And that job: all the corporate nonsense, the micro-managing, the fluorescent lighting, the mandatory meetings that accomplish nothing… I’m just not doing anything right. And I don’t know why. But it all started out with the best of intentions.”

Dakota ordered a club soda.

“All I’ve ever wanted was to be able to take care of the people I care about. And I can’t do that. I’m actually hurting them. And that makes it worse. And I worry about my mom — both of my parents, really. And my brother… They’re so helpless and stupid. Just dull and shiftless. Wasting days in Indiana. My best pal, the one whose house I’m living in, is in Chicago living with a girl who he loves but is just so hard on him. And he’s unemployed and frustrated and not doing so hot either. And I know I’m making things worse for him by not paying him rent and… Ah, fuck it. It’s all a mess. Christ, I’m talking a lot. I must not be drunk enough to shut up.”

“So you ran away from it all.”

“I needed an escape. Don’t we all need to escape sometimes?”

“I suppose so. But blowing a thousand bucks on booze at a cathouse hundreds of miles from home isn’t helping.”

“It clears my mind.”

“Bullshit.”

“It is. But it’s something. It’s something else. A good long drive always does me good. Maybe I’ll figure it out on the drive back.” He signaled the bartender for another round. “Are you drinking?” he asked Dakota.

“No, thank you. You seem like a sweet guy. But intentions, well, they’re just that. I lived in Vegas for a few years after leaving Sioux Falls. I needed to get away from that life. It was too slow. There wasn’t enough action; I needed to make something of myself. But I always had every intention of going back home at some point. Then I met a guy, and things went bad, and I had to leave. And I ended up here. I haven’t seen or spoken to my family in years. I don’t even have any real friends. I made the real escape.”

“And are you okay with your life now?”

“I’m fine with it. I think that before I was always hurting. And I haven’t hurt since I’ve been here. No one knows me, and I don’t know anyone. These other girls, my boss, they’re just co-workers. I get paid to create human interaction. It’s all business; there are no real feelings attached to any of it. I make people happy, if only for an hour and for whatever reason they want to feel happy for. Maybe they’re tired of being by themselves in the cabs of their trucks. Maybe they’re not getting any physical affection at home. Maybe they’re too socially fucked up to meet women in their real life. Maybe they like the fantasy of a Chinese girl with big tits. But I escaped because I was hurting all of the time. And I was hurting my parents with my behavior. I’ve seen all the hurt I ever want to see. Personally, anyway. Now I just provide relief. Or that one thing every one of us wants.”

“And what’s that? Happiness?”

“Sure. Why not?”

“Well, I never hurt my parents.”

“This isn’t a pissing contest. I’m just telling you that everybody hurts, and that this escape of yours, it’s not going to stop that.”

“‘Everybody hurts.’ Are you quoting R.E.M. now?”

“What’s R.E.M.?”

“The band. They had that song, ‘Everybody Hurts.’”

“Never heard of them. Don’t know it. Listen, why don’t you come back to my room with me.”

“I can’t. I have to draw the line somewhere.”

Dakota leaned in and whispered in his ear, “A blowjob on the house won’t hurt anything. As long as my boss doesn’t find out.”
