Now Visiting: The Fit Expo (2024)!

I seem to be getting to the LA Convention center a lot lately, and I don't hate it. We live local to places people travel so far to get to, and we need to embrace the adventure of home more often. Anyways, this is a traveling current event, so maybe this post inspires you to go!

Why was I going to The Fit Expo? My cousin's boyfriend was going there as a booth for his side gig, Tanq Athletics. But otherwise, I am pretty active and healthy in general so I thought I might get something out of this regardless. What did I find there?

A lot of people, a diverse group of people. There was chunkier people exercising with people of all different fitness levels; there were famous people; body builders; and so much more! There was such a variety of booths: food, health products, athletic apparel, dogs, police and military recruitment. Like really, anyone who doesn't have a job that wants one can pay to get in and apply for any of the service jobs there. Oh, also samples. Like there was every major energy drink brand there and they were handing out full size drinks-really if you just take a bag and fill it up with drinks-you can get your money's worth in drinks.

Parking, at least for LA on the weekend of 1/20-1/21, was $25 and tickets were $30 ish? They were only taking cash for the tickets or pay on line and check in once there. My only complaint is that, in comparison to the car show that was way more spread out, this was all in one hall. While there is so much going on between playgrounds for kids (and adults), talking panels, dog training, and cooking demos-it was all in one concentrated area. It would of been cool to be more spread out. But really there was so much good stuff there.

It is funny, I am not totally fat but like not a body builder like I used to be, and man I felt like the fattest one there! It was nice to see more people in general covered up, but so much skin tight clothing. Plus there was almost a chest battle for getting the free advertising space that is someone's shirt? It was very interesting. Let me know what you like best from this expo!

Sony first officially announced the PlayStation 3 at E3 2005, which took place May 18-20, 2005 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The console was also unveiled with a boomerang shaped controller which was speculated to be discontinued due to the public disapproving of its bold aesthetics despite its exceptional ergonomics. 🪃

"Giant Rock is a large freestanding boulder in the Mojave Desert near Landers, California, and the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms (location 34°19′58.1988″N 116°23′19.5066″W[1]). The boulder covers 5,800 square feet (540 m2) of ground and is seven stories high.[citation needed] Giant Rock is the largest freestanding boulder in North America and is purported to be the largest free standing boulder in the world.

Native Americans of the Joshua Tree area consider it to be sacred[citation needed]. In the 1930s, Frank Critzer moved to Giant Rock. Inspired by desert tortoises that dig holes in which to cool themselves, Critzer dug out a home on the north side of the rock using dynamite. He engineered a rainwater collection system and a tunnel for ventilation. The underground home was reportedly never hotter than 80 °F (27 °C) and never cooler than 55 °F (13 °C). Critzer built an airstrip on the nearby ancient lakebed, which averaged a plane per day by 1941.[3] Critzer perished in a self-detonated dynamite explosion in his underground rooms on July 24, 1942, while being investigated by local police.

In the 1950s, Giant Rock was a gathering point for UFO believers. It is located on land which was at that time leased by George Van Tassel, a friend of Critzer's, a purported flying-saucer contactee and organizer of UFO conventions.[5] In 1947, Van Tassel, a former aircraft inspector, leased the property from the Bureau of Land Management and left Los Angeles and moved to Giant Rock with his wife and three children.[3] Van Tassel also built the nearby Integratron and a cafe, store, gas station and the Giant Rock Airport, which he operated from 1947 to 1975.

In early 2000,[2] Giant Rock fractured in two, revealing an interior of white granite.[3] The exterior surface of the rock is partially covered in graffiti." Wikipedia

It was Thanksgiving weekend when I drove out to see this "big rock". Lots of off-roaders peppered the area and spoiled many of the shots I wanted of this rock. They also made getting up closer not enjoyable. So, I took some photographs and drove away.

A return visit will need to be considered.

Actress and Author, Lara Parker, of Dark Shadows, Passes at 84

Lara Parker, who found the role of a lifetime at just 28 years old when she was cast by Dark Shadows producer Dan Curtis as the beautiful, vengeful and altogether evil witch Angelique Bouchard Collins, died October 12 in her sleep in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer. She was 84.

Her death was announced by producer Jim Pierson of Dan Curtis Productions, on behalf of Parker’s family.

“I’m heartbroken, as all of us are who knew and loved her,” said her Dark Shadows co-star and longtime friend Kathryn Leigh Scott in a statement. “She graced our lives with her beauty, talent and friendship, and we are all richer for having had her in our lives.”

Parker was born Mary Lamar Rickey on Oct. 27, 1938, in Knoxville, Tennessee. Her father, Albert, was an attorney, and her mother, Ann, was active in civic groups.

She graduated from Central High School in Memphis and attended Vassar — she roomed with Jane Fonda there — and Rhodes College in Memphis, where at 19 she served as Wink Martindale’s assistant on his WHBQ-TV show, Dance Party. She then earned a master’s degree from the University of Iowa.

Parker, who also authored four popular Dark Shadows-related novels from 1998-2016, arrived on the supernatural soap opera in 1967, not long after Canadian actor Jonathan Frid had been cast as vampire Barnabas Collins. Frid’s storyline changed the show from a moody, Gothic Jane Eyre-type serial into a flat-out horror show.

During breaks in production, Parker acted on Broadway in September 1968 in Woman Is My Idea, which lasted just five performances, and in the early Brian De Palma film Hi, Mom! (1970), starring Robert De Niro.

And toward the end of the daytime serial, she and fellow castmembers including John Karlen, Kate Jackson, David Selby and Grayson Hall appeared in the poorly received MGM film Night of Dark Shadows (1971).

In 1972, Parker relocated to Los Angeles and went on to appear on episodes of such shows as Medical Center, Kojak, The Rockford Files, Police Woman, Kolchak: The Night Stalker (as a witch) and The Incredible Hulk, where she played David Banner’s first wife in a flashback sequence in the pilot.

In her later years, Parker turned to writing and teaching — her novels include Angelique’s Descent (1998), The Salem Branch (2006), Wolf Moon Rising (2013) and Heiress of Collinwood (2016). The books proved popular among Dark Shadows‘ still-devoted, conventions-attending fan base, as well as devotees of romance and horror genre novels.

Parker kept in touch with her co-stars including Scott, Selby, Roger Davis, the late John Karlen and others throughout her life, particularly once the conventions became annual events in the late 1980s through the 1990s and up to the 50th anniversary celebration in 2017.

Many of the original cast, including Parker, recorded a series of Dark Shadows audio dramas in the 2000s released by Big Finish Productions. They also reunited for a “Smartphone Theatre” Zoom-style, Covid-era performance of A Christmas Carol in 2021 and, on Halloween night 2020, a YouTube/Zoom Dark Shadows cast reunion.

Parker is survived by second husband Jim Hawkins, daughter Caitlin, sons Rick and Andy, and their wives Miranda and Celia; and grandson Wesley.
