No, I totally agree. There has to be some intention behind it and I find it hard to believe they’re that stupid that they don’t know what the result will be. It may just be something that makes sense to us down the road. But he clearly keeps doing it on purpose.

I’ve been a fan of vampire movies and shows since the 1960s. (Yes, I was one of those kids who ran home from school to see the next episode of Dark Shadows.)

In 1985, I read Anne Rice’s second vampire novel, “The Vampire Lestat” and later found the first, “Interview with the Vampire”. What I liked about her take on vampire lore, was that she didn’t tied them down with all the religious claptrap of most vampire stories. But in 1995 she converted to Catholicism and retroactively added religion back into her stories. Her books became too florid as well and I gradually stoped reading them.

Around that time film of Interview came out. It was fun seeing the character come to life (death?). Although I’ve always thought Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt should have traded roles.

In 2022, AMC released a TV series based on Interview. They made some interesting changes: moved the timeframe up 20 years to the 1920s; and cast both Louis and Claudia with Black actors. These ideas refreshed the story and added the additional subtext of vampires as outsiders.

In the original book Claudia was a 5 year old vampire. In the Cruise movie they aged her up to about 12 (played by Kristin Dunst). For the series, she’s been aged up again to about 15 or 16. At first I didn’t think it would work. But by making Claudia a teenager, we now have a vampire with teen hormones coursing through her veins. Plus of course, teenage rebellion.

The second season of the series has just started. A major turning point in the series has been Louis and Claudia traveling to Europe to find other vampires. But the first episode of season 2 shows them making a detour to war ravaged Romania. They do find vampire but not what they expected.

The three main actors are all great in their roles: Jacob Anderson as Louis de Pointe du Lac; Sam Reid as Lestat de Lioncourt; and Bailey Bass (season 1) and Delainey Hayles (season 2) as Claudia.

If you enjoy vampire or horror fiction, but haven’t seen the AMC series, I suggest checking it out. You could probably binge season 1 during the free week, then subscribe if you like it.

The reason, I think, boils down to this.

Harry’s brand, his approach to entertainment, is to define success by social climbing and wealth. This ethos defines Harry’s every public action. Harry Styles will never appear with a book just because he likes to read. Every celebrity he shows up with is there to promote and be promoted. Harry will wear clothing and jewelry like a billboard. His entire existence is to be a billboard. A new ring? It’s to promote something. New tattoo? Promoting something. Harries and Larries take this cue unconsciously, so they internalize Harry’s values of greed and power, using other people as they use him.

Harry’s interactions with his fans are always warm from the stage in front of cameras, but otherwise he’s distant, untouchable, unreachable. He’s available only to influencers and others who can promote him, to people who pay for access (Lane One, DEMAND), to the famous and wealthy. Harry Styles has truly exemplified (his friends) the Kardashians’ Principle: publicity, publicity, publicity. His fans learn from his behavior. They understand that in Harryverse, money and power are the ultimate values. Those who have less power and wealth are to be abused. Harry makes jokes at his ex-bandmate’s expense (Ringo etc.), and his fans are simply an extension of his personality.

Louis’ ethos is, in many ways, the complete opposite of Harry’s. Louis is in a position to sell VIP and dynamically priced tickets, and to charge for meet & greets, but (to Matt Vines’ frustration) he won’t. Louis has openly criticized “greedy fuckers” in the industry. Louis tends to avoid those in entertainment who play the social climbing game— he stays away from Ben Winston and James Corden, who are great friends with Harry, and to whom Niall sucks up. We might get frustrated that Louis doesn’t backslap and gladhand, but that is Louis’ principle. During the pandemic, Louis made Twitter videos advocating care “for the most vulnerable in Doncaster” and championed food aid for poor children. Meanwhile, Harry biked with Rande Gerber, drove in a convertible with Kendall Jenner, debuted a romance with Olivia Wilde in LA at the height of COVID deaths, and went to Michelin starred restaurants in Italy. Louis featured a grieving widower in his music video, Two Of Us, not an A-list celebrity or TikTok influencer nor wearing designer clothes he’s paid to advertise. Louis’ work ethic is basically to let the work speak for itself, not to sell it on the basis of marketing. This is exactly opposite to what Harry does.

When interviewers ask Louis and Harry questions, they are reflecting this difference in ethics. They interview Harry obsequiously, as if they are themselves subservient and inferior. They interview Louis from a position of power, ready to abuse him. They understand the hierarchy as well as fans do. The interviewers aren’t better or worse people than either men; they just act differently in front of them because of their industry power. Nothing illustrates the difference better than comparing two men from the same band.

Fans understand this dynamic very well. Harries are often the people in society who want to win at any cost, and they feel vicariously victorious if they stan Harry Styles, and even more so if they can piggyback onto Harry’s and his team’s contempt for others who are not as wealthy or powerful. Nothing illustrates this better than abusing the blacklisted ex-bandmate.

Surprisingly, it includes CCTV cameras, a PA system and water jets in case any fans get too close to the van.

I wanted to briefly elaborate on why I'm pro Louis being a brothel and casino owner in the new series vs a plantation owner in the book.

there's the obvs, i don't want to see slavery in my vampire series, and like i said in my original post, once we move past them living there, its just not relevant or even spoken about in the series again, and I think that's a big failing of the narrative, because something so huge should be relevant! shouldn't just be flavour text! especially when every other focus character has their human life be relevant.

so why do i think this particular switch up is better? because no matter what, Louis money should come from the exploitation of others.

It is a cornerstone of Louis' character that he's a hypocrite. Just like it is for Lestat. They aren't good people, these aren't stories about good people. If that's what you need from your fiction you won't find it here.

The vampire as a drain on life, on converting suffering to power, the power imbalance is replicated over and over in different ways in the VC books

It's both metaphor and reality.

But also, the series is fallible, of course, huge flaws and missteps. The point of a good adaptation is to see the skeleton of a text, to see the broad themes and see how they can be represented in a different medium, how the same fundamental story can be told, even with huge changes.

Take my favourite show of all time, Hannibal. Huge departures from the original text, but it takes its source material and elevates and innovates.

Or my current obsession, Kinnporsche. It takes story beats but the characters were hugely altered and fleshed out and the story now plays out around these new interpretations and its wonderful.

And I could see people being like oh hannibal and kinnporsche's source material had some truly gross stuff, the adaptations not including it or altering it was a great idea!

You think that the vamp chrons are free of that? I'm not talking about the existence of slavery being in the books, that's real history.

But there's shitty stuff about rape apologism, ableism, the way Anne describes any person of colour, the truly dumb 'vampires get whiter as they are older and more powerful'. Anne that's truly a garbage piece of world building. Anne, you didn't need to do that.

The best thing the movie of queen of the damned did was cast Aaliyah and not whiten her. It was right, she was magnificent.

I think good adaptations should be brave, should make changes. It should challenge the audience, it should be accessible for new fans, it should surprise long term fans.

This is why I am pro the proffesion change in the amc iwtv series. This, and the interviews (lol) that i have seen and read from the cast and writers make me believe they will present a story true to the core of the narrative even as they are re-interpreting it.

Also, and this is just me swinging for the rafters but I hope they wildly vary from the story in any potential new series after this, and add a lot more Louis content. My constant gripe with the series, since 1997, when i first read the books, is that Louis gets sidelined and without him Lestat doesn't have a strong narrative foil. Please. I'm craving that epic divorce guys energy

Your opinion on Claudia and Claudia and Lestat?Apart from her early years and the arc of her depression after killing her first boyfriend, Claudia seems very well adjusted. It doesn't seem to me that she indulges in any more murderous sprees and her emotional "outbursts" don't even seem to be due to her state of "adolescent angst."

There is still a horror in the fact that she is a woman forever trapped in the appearance of a child, but Claudia's worst traits seem to be learned from her coexistence with Lestat and not the consequences of converting someone "too young".

It's funny because while Louis is the father she loved the most, it is Lestat that she imitates and resembles well.I think at some point she loved him and it's because of how betrayed she felt by Charlie's death that she started to hate him so hard, but I don't think Lestat ever cared about her beyond her role as the band-aid and then the poison in his relationship with Louis.

To be completely honest, it's difficult for me to talk about IWTV like this because I don't think they deliver on what they say they do and on what fans/viewers tell me they do.

Why is it coexistence with Lestat that shaped her and not what she had to suffer with Bruce?

Hi sorry if you’ve already answered this but I was wondering if you know anyone that sells Louis and Harry inspired merch. That isn’t to expensive for shipping or prices for Australia. I’d love to buy from Louis but it’s so expensive when converted to AUS$. Is Etsy a reliable website to buy off or are they stolen images ?

I don’t personally know of Australian fan merch artists, but maybe some of my followers have suggestions for you?! Anyone?

As for Etsy, there are a lot of artists that sell their H+L inspired original merch on there, and you can also check Redbubble. However, some of that merch can be from stolen images, or designs that get copied across tons of sellers. You’ll notice very quickly because you’ll see the same designs over and over again.

There are also a few artists that allow you to use their art for personal products, but you’d have to ask them on their blog/socials.

Are there any fan merch designers out there who would like to share their links/stores and creations?
