So the AA Fandom has no shortage of jokes about how our favorite Anime Laywers generally prioritize stuff like the Power of Friendship above more mundane concerns like 'getting paid for doing their job' but...seriously now, how often do they actually get paid for lawyering?
Well, welcome to...
The Big Overview of WAA Lawyers and Actually Getting Paid!!
The vast majority of AA Cases do not discuss payments for legal services explictly, so I will be Ranking how probable I feel it is the Lawyers got Paid. With a 0 standing for 'explictly and unambigiously did not get paid' and 1 standing for 'explictly and unambigiously did get paid'
The First Turnabout
That's an easy one, it is actually explicitly mentioned that no, Larry did not pay Phoenix for his services as a Lawyer.
And so, my first trial came to a close. Larry slapped me on the back and said, "Gee, Nick, it's good to have friends!" But I'm pretty sure he's not going to pay us. Unless you count the clock he gave Mia.
Which is brought up again months later during 'Turnabout Goodbyes'
Butz: Whoa… Nick. S-so, is that why you helped me out for free? Phoenix: Uh… yes. I helped you because I believed in you. (Except I don't remember saying I'd do it for free…)
So Phoenix expected and wanted to get paid, but he’s just, like, not assertive enough to get his money off Larry. And thus a long legacy of Not Getting Money was born!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0
Turnabout Sisters
Okay, so the subject of money does not come up directly in ‘Turnabout Sisters’ but like… Maya does not seem to have a lot of liquid funds on her at this point. For most of the games she generally relays on Phoenix to pay for things for her. At best right now she is semi-dependent on Morgan for cash - and considering her motivations, she probably came out with some excuse like ‘oooh Mystic Maya must prove her independence in such a dire situation or something, the whole Fey Family is broke we can’t afford to give you any more money I feel so bad ooooh’.
So I think if Phoenix got paid for defending her that was mostly a token symbolic gesture of gratitude more than actually anything that’ll help him pay the rent. And obviously Phoenix wouldn’t gain anything if he paid himself for that second trial of the case lol
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.1
Turnabout Samurai
Okay, so this is the first case where I think it is more likely than not Phoenix Actually Got Paid. There’s nothing textual, but I think with the implications of Phoenix starting the case fretting over how to pay the rent:
Phoenix: A month has passed since my trial. Mia's murder was the talk of the town for some time… But no one paid any attention to the Wright & Co. Law Offices… How am I going to pay the rent this month? Maya: It'll be okay. I'm sure some big client is just around the corner! Phoenix: Hmph.
And THEN his new Client is Will Powers who is:
a fairly sucessful actor whose life and career seems to be unglamorous but financially stable.
the first cilent Phoenix has who isn't a friend, a relative-of-a-friend or Literally Himself
generally just a really nice and wholesome guy.
It seems pretty likely to me that Phoenix and Maya got paid for this one!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.8
Turnabout Goodbyes
OKAY so, I've seen folks say that Phoenix would've probably done this for free cause he sees this whole thing as repaying a debt for Being Nice to Him in Fourth Grade because as we all know, Phoenix is a Certified Ridiculous Human Being.
Phoenix: This is my chance to finally pay you back. Maya: Pay him back…? Edgeworth: Pay me back? For what? I don't remember ever doing anything for you. Phoenix: Never mind… I guess you don't really need to know.
Buuuuut... Larry at the time was also part of that Class Trial Bestie Pact and Phoenix did expect him to pay I mean Larry is not the Love of His Life but still.
And more important, this case ALSO established that Miles has a problem expressing gratitude and overcompensate using financial gifts.
Phoenix: Thank you. Oh, wait! Umm… I was wondering, how much is bail going to be? Gumshoe: Don't worry about that. Mr. Edgeworth is posting the whole amount. Phoenix: What? Edgeworth…? Gumshoe: Didn't I tell you? He's grateful to her for what she did. Alright, pal. Well don't forget to go pick her up, okay? Phoenix: (Hmm… Maybe I can get Edgeworth to pay this month's rent, too…)
So I feel, like, regardless of what Phoenix wanted - at the end of this trial - Miles IS going to make sure he is GETTING PAID. Dude was probably shoving checks into his mailbox like a full month after the trial concluded.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.9
Rise from the Ashes
So... the person who initially hires Phoenix to the case is Ema Skye, a 16 year old girl whose main funds are her allowance. And Phoenix was kinda willfully ignoring his financial situation at the start and only took this case for sentimental reasons. (just more evidence that Miles was STILL sending him payments for 'Goodbyes' lol)
It's been two months since Maya left the office… Two months without a single trial. I've had offers… But none I took. That is… until the day that girl showed up.
However he does get 'formally requested' by her probably-well-off-considering-prosecutors-in-this-series older sister shortly thereafter.
Lana: … Mr. Wright? Phoenix: Y-yes? Lana: I believe our discussion here is ended. The rest… I leave to you. Phoenix: …! Um… you mean, you're requesting my services as your defense? Lana: Don't lose any sleep over it. Your client has confessed, after all. The case is over. Phoenix: Right… I'll do what I can to get to the bottom of this. Lana: …
And after a very long and harrowing journey of being in-conflict with his own client, Lana did end up being very grateful for what he did. And again, this case espacially emphasizes that 'prosecutors make the big bucks' - so she had both the means and will to pay him.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.6
The Lost Turnabout
Alrighty, so, Maggey is generally a nice girl and also a fangirl of Phoenix Wright and that gives her an incentive to support him financially...
Actually, I really love to watch court proceedings, and I always root for you to win! When I'm off duty, I like to come here and…
But with how unlucky she is, that might imply that she could have Money Troubles. Although on the other hand she at least has a stable job at the moment... But on the other OTHER hand she does mention how all the other lawyers 'laughed her off'
Just when I thought all hope was lost; when all the other lawyers had laughed me off… "Leave it to me!" you said! You! The one and only Phoenix Wright came to save the day! And just like that, I was moved to tears, sir! I'll never forget what you're doing for me, EVER!
Which usually I wouldn't note as a financial thing. Usually when an AA Defendant is like 'oooh I have no one else to turn too, all the other lawyers turned me down......" this is because the case is considered too impossible to win or Unbearably Wacky (or some sort of conspiracy like with Maya in 'Sisters'). But, like, this is a Tutorial Case. Phoenix won that one with Fucking Amnesia. The 'impossibility' of the case was not the issue, so, yeah, it might legitimately be the money?
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.4
Reunion, and Turnabout
It's Maya Murder Trial Time Again! Pretty much the same as before with the two added factors being:
Maya is now officially employed in the Wright & Co. Law Offices during the duration of the trial.
AFTER the Trial, when Morgan is like, in jail - Maya might have a bit more acess to her family funds. Although they are established to Not Be Doing Well Financially in general....
A piece of cloth with a ton of finely-written characters jammed onto it. Probably esoteric knowledge only mediums should know. …Hmm, let's see… Here's one in English… It says… "100 Ways to Save Money". … Being a medium sounds like a rough way of life…
I think all in all these kinda even out to the same Chances of Getting Paid at last time??
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.1
Turnabout Big Top
So if you ever start discussing how pointless the AA 'middle cases' are - just remember this one crucial detail; they are the most reliable way Phoenix Wright gets food on his plate! We once again have a stranger (that Phoenix won't feel obligated to defend for free) that is very explictly Fabulously Wealthy.
He's not as nicey-nice as Will Powers is but I feel like paying Phoenix's legal fees is not something Max will bet an eye at.
Phoenix: It's a table for guests… There are some papers scattered on top. Maya: Ah! Look at this! Max's salary is written on this piece of paper. YIKES! Phoenix: W-What is it? Maya: I didn't know a magician… This salary is incredible! Phoenix: (She looks like she's about ready to pass out from shock…) How much is it!? How much is it!? T-T-THAT MUCH!? Maya: Incredible, huh? Phoenix: You can say that again.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Farewell, My Turnabout
Okay so this is the Big One. This one’s a really complicated one to determine.
Let’s just get the first thing out of the way, the fact that Phoenix “”lost”” the case does not matter one way or another. Criminal Defense Lawyers, as a general rule, do not work on a Contingency Fee Basis. That means they are paid regardless of the result of the trial. So if this was a normal trial, Phoenix would probably be paid.
But this was not a normal trial, was it?
Phoenix was FORCED to work as a Defense Attorney due to a KIDNAPPER. And, like, my first instinct is ‘if you are already forcing someone to work via criminal means, why the hell would you also pay them??’
Buuuuut….. This is MY instinct, not the instinct of goddam Shelly De Killer.
Since Shelly’s whole thing is being the Honorable Assassin, and he has some level of respect towards Phoenix as like a Fellow Professional. I can see him thinking maybe wanting Phoenix to get paid for the work he is Coercing Him To Do Under Threat of Murdering His Best Friend for the sake of Honor.
But also also, Phoenix’s terms are not officially with De Killer, it’s with This Asshole!
Tumblr media
And Matt Engarde is absolutely the kind of guy to casually take advantage of Phoenix’s frantic ‘please please just let me be your lawyer or my Friend is gonna Die!’ thing where, like, obviously getting paid is NOT gonna cross through Phoenix’s head atm in order to not pay/severely underpay the guy even though he can obviously afford it.
All in all, things are not looking good for this case’s probability, which is a shame considering how it ends.
Powers: Um, anyway… So, who's paying for this lovely dinner party? Maya: As if you need to ask! Everyone say, "Thank you" to Nick! Phoenix: Huh? Gumshoe: Ah, yeah… I'm kinda at the point where I can't even buy instant noodles, pal. So I kinda already put your name on the bill.

Turnabout Memories
First time covering a Lawyer that’s not Phoenix!
Now, Mia’s client in this case is a college student who probably doesn't have tons of personal funds, and considering her own motivations for taking on the case she probably would’ve done it for free but…
At the time she was employed at the Grossberg Law Offices, and Phoenix hired just the office in general and then Mia took over the case just last night.
Grossberg: Still, you surprised me… What, with your earnest request last night… "Let me handle this case!" you suddenly said. And quite forcefully, too! Mia: I just found out yesterday. About the case, I mean.
So... really this is just the Vibes I get from the Grossberg Law Offices, being generally the more professional and by-the-book law offices compared to the utter chaotic energy of Wright and Co, that makes me assume that they usually reliably charge their clients and pay their lawyers.
There’s some evidence further down the line (which we’ll get to soon) that some of their lawyers do some pro-bono work - but I dunno if Phoenix’s case was extreme enough to necessitate that (I mean he might be a broke college student but his family would probably help him with the legal funds although that assumes they even exist) . So my assumption is that Mia probably did get paid. Probably?
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.75
The Stolen Turnabout
So, Ron DeLite used to really financially struggle to keep up with his wife’s shopaholic habits - but that seems to have stabilized ever since his ‘benefactor’ showed up. So I’d assume he still has some funds left to pay his lawyer. I mean I guess it won’t be totally implausible if Desiree did manage to blow through them all…. Or maybe being a a high-spending shopaholic means that she’d want to pay extravagantly for her lawyer as well?
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Recipe for Turnabout
It’s Maggey again! And now she’s:
Closer to a friend, or at least a friend-of-friend. Rather than Just Another Client.
Is probably in a more dire financial state than before, on account of being unemployed and also in jail for the last two months.
Also being a waitress isn’t that prestigious a job anyways
And if anyone is gonna help her cover her legal fees it could only be Gumshoe which… does not bode well to anyone involved!
Pissed at Phoenix cause it took her some time to realize that no, that guy who got her found guilty two months ago is not him
So basically everything that changed since her last trial makes it less likely that Phoenix charged for his legal services. I'm sure she'd try her best by the end, but Phoenix might just wave it off to save everyone a headache.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.3
Turnabout Beginnings
So first things first I want to reiterate that Criminal Defense Attorneys generally get paid regardless of if they ‘win’ and while I couldn’t find any concrete statements about the matter - I believe they get paid even if their clients die mid-trial??? I mean, the legal fees just get added to their posthumous debts? So the lawyer would hypothetically be able to claim their due payment from the deceased’s remaining funds and possessions. If they wanted to, that is…
Cause, well, this is why I said the Grossberg Law Offices might do some pro-bono cases. Terry Fawles was, like, a part-time tutor who has been incarcerated for the last five years. If he has any family or friends outside that could help him with his legal fees, he never mentions them.
So I’m really not sure if he bought Mia services or if she volunteered to do this pro-bono after hearing he had no options for legal representations out of concern for, like, prisoners rights.
And even if he was supposed to pay Mia for her service, after the grim ending of the case - I’m not sure if she would’ve even tried to pursue getting her legal fees from Fawles’ posthumously/from his next of kin. From how deeply traumatized she was by that trial, I think that would’ve only made her feel worse about the whole situation.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.05
Bridge to the Turnabout
Iris is a nun from a small temple that is mentioned to not-be-doing-so-hot (cause it’s tied with the Kurain Channeling Technique and it’s been on a downturn since DL-6), but she does have at least enough personal funds to have her own cell-phone and occasionally go into town. So it’s not a lot, but I think it’s enough to get Phoenix at least a a symbolic token-of-gratitude payment.
Also, it might be possible Phoenix will wave off the fees due to the Personal Connection to the case. You know, he was doing this primarily to Uncover the Truth and get some personal closure for the Dahlia mess.... Or maybe not, cause he did still get paid (or tried to get paid, or forced to get paid) to save his two Fourth-Grade-Life-Debt Childhood Best Friends in court?
(And I do mean just Phoenix, Miles probably would never charge for his services as ‘acting defense attorney’, we don’t need that farce to get any farcier)
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.3
Turnabout Trump
Now this is a complicated one, let us list the factors here one-by-one:
1. As per Apollo’s comment in the next episode, the Gavin Law Offices probably operated strictly quid pro quo.
(Good-bye, quid pro quo. Hello pro bono. sigh)
2. Phoenix is supposedly friends with the boss of the Agency. And in reality, Kritoph Gavin has a very VERY vested interest in making sure the trial goes According to Plan. Incentivising him to at least give Phoenix a discount.
3. Phoenix is also not doing that great financially right now.
4. Oh right, that entire law agency disbanded once the boss got arrested at the end of the trial!
…Speaking of which, I may be out of a job. I work for Gavin Law Offices, after all. (I still can't believe I just saw Mr. Gavin get led away in handcuffs…)
I think it is most likely that Phoenix got some sort of “”Friend”” Discount from Kristoph. But I really don’t know what happens if an entire law firm gets disbanded right after the trial cause the owner got arrested as a result of it. It probably depends on whether Phoenix was in agreement with the Gavin Law Offices who then assigned Apollo on the case or if Phoenix had an agreement with Apollo directly.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.5
Turnabout Corner
Oh hey, look! Another rare case of an Ace Attorney that actually discusses the issue of money directly!
Tumblr media
Well, I mean we know how much Apollo got paid for solving the case of Phoenix’s accident and Trucy’s panties (nothing) and for solving Eldoon’s Noodle Cart Theft (a free bowl of ramen). We don’t see them directly discuss the subject of payment regarding Apollo’s Actual Job…
Apollo: Your request… let me guess, something's been stolen? Alita: Um, your flyer… It says "now defending" so I thought… Apollo: Whaaaat!? You mean, you mean you want me to defend you? Me? Trucy: Maybe you can tell us what happened? Were you hit by a car? Did someone steal your stand? Or your panties? Alita: No! No… I'm not the client, actually. The client would be my… well, my fiancé, I suppose you'd call him. Apollo: Fiancé…? What happened to him, then? Alita: He was arrested this morning. The charge… was murder.
But as he was complaining before about not only being pigeonholed as some sort of a detective, but also not getting paid for anything…
Um… I was wondering when I get paid? We solved the case of your accident, and um, found a missing article of clothing.
And then getting this job and being so happy about it...
Trucy: Polly! You look as happy as a clam in its shell. Apollo: For a lawyer this is it, the place where the battle begins!
Implies that He’s Getting Paid - just as much as with Phoenix’s rent stuff in ‘Turnabout Samurai’ if not more.
Also, I don’t think the fact that the person who hired him wanted him to fail and is now going to prison is a factor here.
As I already mentioned, Defense Attorneys get paid regardless of the outcome of a trial and logically that would apply both when they lose and when they win. Plus, I am pretty sure Alita filed her request officially through Wocky’s name or the Kitaki family in general and they were obviously very grateful for what Apollo did, and they had both the wins and wills to pay him.
So let’s give a big round of applause for Apollo Justice, the WAA Lawyer most likely to get paid!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.99
Turnabout Serenade
These kind of showbiz-focused Middle Cases are generally pretty good for Getting Paid Probabilities, but this case is a bit more complicated.
Cause the plot of this case hinges on Machi being so desperate for money that he was willing to risk death via cocoon smuggling,
Situation… I cannot explain. But money. I needed. Very much money.
That doesn’t necessarily mean he was unable to afford a lawyer - without details of why exactly he needed that Sweet, Sweet Cocoon Money we can’t be sure.  But it’s plausible that hiring Apollo was not out of his price range but he was desperate for something far more expensive.
Considering his young age and… you know, until the final day of the trial he pretended to not understand a word of English, it’s also possible hiring Apollo was a matter handled by Lamirior and/or the duo’s agency. Both of which will probably feel committed to Actually Paying, each from their own angle.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Turnabout Succession
Now, HERE’S a complicated one!
Going generally over the usual stuff, Vera is a pretty nice person and she’s clearly grateful for what Apollo and Trucy did for her. And while the Misham Family was driven into forgeries by financial desperation, at the present-time they seem stable enough that Vera could at least afford the rates of the WAA. If this was just another case, it’ll get like a solid 0.7 at minimum. Pretty typical stuff by now.
But this isn’t just one more ordinary case. This a weird sort of ‘Test Trial’ for the Jurist System with every factor - including the Defendant and the Attorney - arranged by Phoenix’s weird little committee.
Well, for one, I'll be chair of the Jurist System Simulated Court Committee. The chair constructs the ideal situation… choosing the case, the jurist candidates… …even the judge and the courtroom.
Apollo: So… what kind of case is the trial simulation about? Phoenix: Well, since it is the first run through of a new system, I wanted something simple. Trucy: Good thinking! No sense wearing yourself out on something too serious! Phoenix: True. The case is a murder. Apollo: That's not simple at all!! Trucy: By "simple", did you mean that the defendant is… Phoenix: …Guilty. Yes. Most likely. …So, good luck, Apollo. Apollo: Um… with what? Phoenix: With the trial tomorrow. You're defending, of course. Recall that I said it had something to do with you.
So I guess the question here, did Phoenix basically make Vera officially hire Apollo? Did the committee hire Apollo and they’re the one paying him? Is this another case of Phoenix trolling Apollo into doing Free Volunteer Work for him?
Honestly I wouldn’t put that past the AA4 version of Phoenix..............but also if he did that I doubt he would’ve missed a chance to crack a joke at Apollo’s expense about that.
...You know, I started this thread of thought with the thought I’m arguing for a lower Getting Paid score for this case but I think I just talked myself into increasing the probability.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.8
Also bonus round: THE TRIAL OF SHADI ENIGMAR!
Zero fucking chances Phoenix got paid on this one. HIS CLIENT DISAPPEARED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE COURT PROCEEDING! And even if Phoenix gets paid before a trial is concluded (unlikely, since he didn’t know Larry wasn’t paying him until after the case was closed), he was his attorney for like half-a-day before he disappeared so wouldn’t have much of a chance either way.  And considering Zak’s character (and how he also tried to sabotage Phoenix’s current Poker-based career seven years after that), I doubt he put that much thought into Phoenix and his financial considerations to give him a down payment in case he had to to do his disappearnce act or whatever. The only thing Zak left Phoenix with when he left was his goddam abandoned child and ONE LESS BADGE!
So I think this case deserves a very special score!
Probability of Getting Paid: -1
Turnabout Countdown
It’s time for Athena’s first case! Or second case, depending on how you look at it.
Now, one of the major ways that Dual Destinies is gonna shake this Deep Serious Analysis up is that before we had, like, one Active Full-Time Lawyer at any time (maybe with a backup lawyer for Flashback Cases), and we now have Three Different Lawyers actively working together on the same cases. My main concern is primarily not which WAA Lawyers get paid for these cases, but IF any of them got paid at all. Still, shenanigans of cases changing hands officially and unofficially are gonna play a factor in my analysis as well.
And it’s here right from the start! We once again have a Lawyer defending their bestest friend in the whole world, and while some people’s instincts might suggest that means that Defense was for free, well… First things first, we already established Precedence for that back in the first trial of the first game with Larry (not for Lawyers getting paid by their friends, but at least expecting payment) and Juniper’s family is probably doing Just Fine considering she attends this super-fancy-pant prestigious Lawyer High School - so she would want to financially support Athena I would think.
And ALSO, Juniper technically didn’t hire Athena, Apollo was the one supposed to defend Junie in court at first. And although Juniper is… growing closer to Apollo at this point in canon, I don't think it's quite the ‘defend me in court for Free’ point of their relationship, compared to where Juniper and Athena are at. So this is just, like, one extra point to the Final Score!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
The Monstrous Turnabout
So in this episode, we actually have two different jobs we need to make sure if Apollo actually got paid for. We have the actual criminal defense case, and we also have Babysitting Trucy.
Trucy: Oh, we'd better hurry. Doesn't look Daddy's going to make it, so let's get going. Apollo: Huh? Where are we going? What about the job he mentioned? Trucy: This IS the job, Polly! You're supposed to keep me company today! Now, come on! Apollo: Another day of not being a lawyer. Should've seen this coming. Trucy: Well, this is the "Wright ANYTHING Agency," y'know. And there's no law-related work at the moment, so… Apollo: (Tell me again why I chose to "work" here?) Where is Mr. Wright, anyway?
That being said, Phoenix might still be a bit of a troll but the WAA is doing a lot better financially now that Trucy has those Sweet Gramarye rights and he’s not quite as mean to Apollo as he was back in Hobomode. So I get a feeling that even with this little runaround, Apollo is probably at least getting paid for chaperoning Trucy around?? Probably?
The actual case is actually a lot more clear cut. It is directly mentioned that Damian Tenma could probably afford lawyers much more prestigious than the WAA, it’s just a matter of the WAA being the only ones crazy enough to take on this ‘doomed’ case.
Trucy: Apollo! Maybe this is your chance. Apollo: Chance for what? Trucy: To do the right thing and defend Jinxie's dad in court! Apollo: Who, me? Wouldn't a man like Mayor Tenma have access to more experienced lawyers? Jinxie: Umm… You wanna know what the detectives said? They doubted there was a lawyer who could get a not-guilty verdict in this one.
And with Mayor Tenma’s personality being based around being almost overly-generous and grateful…
Tenma: How… incredibly… RUDE! Apollo: Umm, sorry. Did I do something to offend you? Tenma: A visitor when all others shun me like a common criminal! And here I am with nothing to offer! I am the epitome of rude! Apollo: (………Wait, so he wasn't mad at me?)
I feel like it is almost a certainty that Apollo and Athena did get paid for this case!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.85
Turnabout Academy
Okay so, it’s Junie again! Or Junie for the first time depending on how you look at it!
So all of the points I already brought up about Juniper from ‘Countdown’ still apply (save for the stuff about Apollo, of course) but ALSO this is right when Athena and Juniper reunited and their whole emotional arc in this case is about Athena feeling Juniper is being Uncharacteristically Cold and Distant towards her. So defending her on a Friend Discount would be a bit strange at this point. Maybe I can see Athena trying to insist she’d do it for free but Juniper refused?
Although I think that IS a bit weird that they had this big whole scene with Professor ScaryStatue taking over Juniper’s case and the issue of payment doesn’t even come up in passing. I mean, yes obviously, the issues of Trust and Truth and Aristotle Means being Sus as Fuck are the important things in this narrative but I’m suprised there’s not even a mention in passing. Like Means accusing Athena and Apollo of wanting this case back for the Money but they refute him???
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.8
The Cosmic Turnabout
Okay, look, I know I keep bringing up the Larry Precedence but it really IS quite relevant. If Actual Overly-Sentimental Human Disaster Phoenix Wright tried to charge a rate for his childhood best friend who was drifting through life doing weird odd jobs at that time. - Then Apollo, who is generally more practical minded, is probably going to charge a rate for his older acquaintance with the stable Astronaut Job. And while Solomon is a bit of a Space Larry, I don’t think he’d try and avoid the payment in quite the same way. Probably.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Turnabout for Tomorrow
This trial has Phoenix defending one of his own employees in a trial forced on by a hostage situation. I feel silly even extending this paragraph any longer.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.01
Turnabout Reclaimed
First things first, yes, an Orca cannot pay for an attorney - but I assume that the person who hired Phoenix is officially Sasha Buckler. Who IS a human being with her own funds capable of hiring a lawyer. Especially as we know that other lawyers turned her down specifically because her case is ridiculous (and not for financial reasons).
Phoenix: What's the real reason you picked me, Sasha? Buckler: …Well, to be honest, I asked a whole slew of lawyers, but they all refused. They said stuff like, "There's no merit to taking your case," or "I'm not sure I can help." They're all as cruel as sharks, with hearts punier than whitebait!
She does mention doing a performance as thanks at the ending of the trial but that’s probably no replacement for Actual Money.
But I think most notable for our analysis about this case, is not actually any of the Orca stuff - it’s this exchange right here.
Blackquill: Today, the orca. Tomorrow, Sasha Buckler. You intend to save them both? Hmph. You say you "believe" in your clients, but isn't money really your true motivation? Why not admit you're only doing this for your own benefit? I could understand that much more readily than your empty, righteous talk. Athena: Our own benefit?! That's not why we're doing it! Phoenix: Now, Athena. Try not to let him get to you.
Yet another rare case of the game Acknowledging Lawyers Are Paid As a General Rule! And notably, when Phoenix and Athena deny it, they don’t deny the fact that they are getting paid - just that it’s not why they’re doing this. This is not exactly an explicit confirmation of Getting Paid to get the score up to a full 1, but it’s probably as close as we’re gonna get.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.95
The Foreign Turnabout
Okay, so Phoenix basically just bursted into the Courtroom and bluffed his way onto the empty defense bench despite the protests of his own so-called Client. Said client also only started unlearning his Defense-Attorney-Hate during that same trial. And is ALSO a tiny little child who has to work part time as a tour-guide to make end’s meet. I highly doubt Phoenix asked for anything more than, like, a very token rate or maybe a discount on his next tour.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.1
The Magical Turnabout
Considering how this case has a WAA Lawyer defending the actual CEO of the WAA, I highly doubt the WAA got any money from it. But maybe Trucy could give him some of her personal funds as a token of gratitude?
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.2
The Rite of Turnabout
It’s MAYA TIME again! And while some consideration has to go to her bond with Phoenix or the possibility of some sort of Frequent Accused card the WAA issued for her - the fact that she is not currently a Coworker at the law office and has been an Actual Independent Adult for quite some time now means it is actually a lot more likely she’s able to pay Phoenix now than in any case in the Original Trilogy!
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.5
Turnabout Storyteller
This one’s a pretty average case. The Defendant is not a total stranger, but he is more of a friend-of-a-friend (and Simon was originally planning to get Apollo or Phoenix into the courtroom so the connection was even more distant when he contacted the WAA). He seems to be doing alright financially with his own noodle business, and he’s a pretty alright kinda guy. The only possible concern is that he’s too totally slushed to remember he’s supposed to pay his attorney. But then again, Simon might be ‘officially’ the one who hired the lawyer for the case.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.6
Turnabout Revolution
It’s time for the THREE CASES IN ONE SPECIAL!! Because we don’t just need to consider Dhurke’s trial, I think it’s only appropriate that we take into account both Apollo and Phoenix’s side of the civil case. They are both WAA Lawyers, after all.
On Apollo’s side, he is defending Datz Are'bal, an escaped prisoner/wanted revolutionary criminal in his own country hiding away in an abandoned building and making homemade lizard skewers for food- but Datz did apparently enter Japanifornia legally via legitimate means.
Apollo: What are the charges this time? Datz: Unauthorized entry, or something like that. They think I'm an illegal alien! And I can't prove otherwise ‘cause I lost my passport! Trucy: Is there any way they'd let you go? Datz: Not without my passport… If only I had it! Dhurke, AJ! You gotta find my passport! Apollo: …All right, we'll find it. (One more thing to add to our to-do list. Now, where might Datz's passport be?)
So he presumably has some sort of funds to pay Apollo for his legal services, at least a little bit.
And with him being Dhurke’s best friend and knowing that he also struggled financially to make end’s meet as a defense attorney at first - I would like to think that’ll incentivise him to support Apollo financially if he can?
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Meanwhile on Phoenix’s side, while Phoenix uses the word ‘hire’ when talking about working for Atishon. Phoenix was once again coerced via kidnapping into the position of attorney.
And THIS time, there is no Assassin with a Code of Honor who might consider paying Phoenix a fair rate. Both Atishon and his ‘benefactor’ are sleazeballs who would not pay Phoenix a dime if they can get away with it. Plus, with this being a civil case, there might actually be a Contingency Basis going on when Phoenix basically quit and then they lose.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.001
And finally, the grand event of this case - the Trial of Dhurke!
So… Can a summoned undead spirit pay for an attorney? I suppose it’s probably easier in Khura'in than in other places. And it’ll mostly work the same as if the client died before the case finished, right? It’ll be considered a debt to be carried by their next of kin. Who in this case will be Nahyuta… but also maybe Apollo? Still, considering all of Dhurke’s living family ranges between ‘wealthy and well-respected’ and ‘Literal Royalty’ - I’m going to assume they’d be more than happy then to pay their Weird Brother for his help.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.75
Turnabout Time Traveler
And here we are! The last case, and a relatively straightforward one at that - at least compared to the last one lol!
Ellen herself does not have many funds as a housemaid, it seems - but since she literally just married one of the richest inventors in the world, I assume her husband is gonna cover the legal fees. The WAA Legal Team and Also Edgeworth and Ema also got an invite to the Wedding but I assume this is not instead of actual payment?
That is, of course, unless it’s technically Larry who hired Phoenix actually.
Tumblr media
Then he’s never getting the goddam money he deserves for his labor.
Probability of Getting Paid: 0.7
Average Probability Score for All Cases (not counting the Zak Bonus Round): 0.51721875
So what have we learned today? I think that while the WAA’s reputation for basically giving away legal services for free is not entirely unearned, it is perhaps somewhat exaggerated. While there’s certainly a lot of Shennanigans and their rates are probably not high (especially not for people they know), they still get paid for a decent amount of high-profile cases. I mean, this Getting Paid Probability Score is over the 50% mark at least....
And… the odd thing is that the First Turnabout really is the only time the subject of the lawyer getting paid is really brought up directly. I get that it might, y’know, ruin the Drama if we acknowledge that our Brave Heroes are getting paid to save people from being convicted of a crime they didn’t commit - or on the other hand of the equation, that they should get paid cause They Need Money to Live. But still…
Is the fact that the only time payment is brought up directly is when Larry isn’t paying Phoenix a bad sign for the general financial situation of our Anime Lawyers? Or is it actually a good sign? Like, that they only mention Larry not paying implying that every time it is not mentioned that means the client did pay them?

The messages from him read “Hey” “Just so you know I’m not gay or anything”. The next message is next to a sprite of Phoenix looking confused/annoyed and sweating. It says “this is grindr my guy”. The response is next to an image of Larry looking angry with his eyes closed, teeth clenched, and hands balled into fists. The message says “I guess people who are lactose intolerant can’t walk down the fucking dairy aisle? I’m just looking”.
The ninth image is of a single tweet. In the upper right is Athena Cykes’ thinking sprite as she touches her earring. In the bottom right is a sprite of Simon Blackquill looking up and away from the camera and frowning. The tweet reads “My uncle, the countriest guy I know, just said “I fuckin hate seeing chipmunks cause it means there ain’t no big cool birds around””.
The last photo is of a single tweet in a chat format. In the upper right is a picture of Wocky Kitaki with his arms crossed and smirking awkwardly while looking away, looking smug yet nervous. Underneath him is Apollo Justice’s disheartened sprite, slouching forward a bit and looking annoyed/exhausted. The tweet says “me: [whispering to my lawyer]” “my lawyer: I’m not asking that” “me: [whispering some more]” “my lawyer: your honor would he still be guilty if he was a worm”.

by the way i just finished playing the phoenix wright trilogy in french, and there are some things i think you should all know about it
they changed the setting so that it takes place in paris. i’m completely serious, they’re all french now and it canonically takes place in paris. yes all the kurain stuff is still japanese and it all happens in france. phoenix wright is a french man in this version.
they kept in the earthquake thing, so in this universe, there are apparently frequent earthquakes in paris and people are used to it.
lotta hart is now from marseilles and speaks like she’s (stereotypically) from the south of france. also her name was translated to Eva Cozésouci (a pun of “she will cause trouble” in french)
actually, a lot of characters have had their names translated into french puns. gumshoe’s french name is “Dick Tektiv” btw
phoenix and edgeworth use formal pronouns for each other until the scene at the end of farewell my turnabout, where they switch to informal pronouns, and i cannot describe to you in words how it made me feel. oh my god they called each other tu. i’m gonna cry
in the third game phoenix and franziska have also started using informal pronouns for each other which is frickin adorable
the stolen turnabout just hits different in french, no i can’t explain. it’s better in french. i don’t know why. mask☆demasque just feels so RIGHT in french somehow. i feel ridiculous saying it but it’s true.
the fake french guy from recipe for turnabout is instead fake italian, and his name is LUIGI, i’m not kidding. his italian restaurant is called “bellissimma” and yes, he talks with a really bad stereotypical italian accent. the restaurant chairs still say “TB” on them though
the cowboy guy from rise from the ashes once again pretends he’s from texas but actually he’s from like, western paris.
edgeworth didn’t call mia a “novice bimbo” he just called her a novice, and the judge’s brother wasn’t even french canadian, smh i’m so angry
in the first case, the victim had just got back from sydney instead of from paris like in the english version (because, naturally, the time difference between paris and paris is zero hours).
a lot of the voice actors are actually the same as in the english one. edgeworth sounds pretty english when speaking french tbh
“Indeed! Verily, I say... Ergo!”

Mia- 28 years old, Witch. Older sister/guardian of Maya and mentor to Phoenix. Just to be in the emperor's coven but left after her mom was killed.
Maya-15 years old,Witch. Younger sister of Mia. Trying to help Phoenix get home. Attending Hexside in Plant and Abomination tracks.
Maya’s uniform:
Tumblr media
Pearl- 10 years old, Witch. Younger cousin of Mia and Maya. Pretty good with magic for such a young age.
Miles- 17 years old, Demon (Vampire). One of the golden guards, originally was tasked with getting rid of Phoenix but ends up befriending him. Can only do magic if he drinks Witch blood (he can live without but he’s weaker)
Miles Golden guard uniform:
Tumblr media
Franziska-15 years old, Grimwalker. One of the golden guards, Originally tasked with getting rid of Phoenix but realizes Manfred is evil and ends up helping them. Physically strong but can’t do magic.
Franzika’s golden guard uniform:
Tumblr media
Emperor Von Karma/ Manfred- Unknown age, Human. The emperor of the boiling Isles, “Father” to Franzika and mentor to Miles. Has to eat palisman to keep his curse at bay (the same as in the show).
Diego/Godot- 30 years old, Witch. Head of the abomination coven. Dated Mia, once she dies, he blames Phoenix for her death and tries to kill him (though he makes sure no harm comes to Maya or Pearl)
Plot:
Phoenix is about to be sent to a camp for troubled teens when he sees Mia’s palisman. He follows it and ends up in the boiling Isles, there he meets Mia and Maya and starts to learn magic. Miles and Franzika are set with the task of getting rid of Mia. They attempt multiple times but each time they fail.
-No clue for this part yet-
After a while Miles and Franzika finally capture Mia, Phoenix and Maya try to save her but she is executed by Emperor Von Karma. Miles feels bad about it (especially since Mia was killed right in front of Phoenix) so he goes to talk to Phoenix. (This would be the first time you see his face or hear his name)
-Once again I stuff happens here I just have no clue yet-
.Pearl's mother (Morgen) is arrested and Pearl starts to live with Phoenix and Maya. This is also the time that Phoenix and Maya get Palisman (I haven’t picked one for Maya but Phoenix has a phoenix named Ash).
-man I thought I had more of this plot thought out-
Maya and Franzika get trapped in Manfreds mind. This Is when Franzika learns that she’s a Grimwalker and Maya learns he’s the one who killed her parents and her sister (Mia/Phoenix never mentioned it and just said they died). Meanwhile, Miles figures out that a past version of Franziska killed his dad, Phoenix follows him and comforts him when he finds out. Though soon after Pearl calls him over a walkie-talkie and says that Maya is trapped in Manfreds mind, he runs off to go help her.
After a bit of effort, they manage to get Franziska and Maya out. Franzika starts to have a panic attack but Maya comforts her. Maya catches Phoenix up about what happened and they have a chat about what happened to Mia. Franzika decides to stay with them, saying that it will only be temporary until she figures out what to do. At that moment Phoenix remembers what happened with Miles and runs off to talk to him. He goes back to where they were before and sees a letter (aka the Edgeworth chooses death letter). He goes back home but doesn’t tell anyone else about what happened.
-2 weeks later-
Franziska is still staying with Phoenix,Maya and Pearl. While Phoenix and Maya are trying to shop for food, they run into Miles (like Miles and Phoenix run into each). Miles is panicking since he’s trapped outside in the sunlight (which burns him). Phoenix and Maya take him back to their home, where Miles explains everything he learnt (about being a vampire). The others explain their plan to try and overthrow Manfred before he goes to the human realm.
-Times passes as all of them plan and such-
Phoenix makes sure that Pearls won’t be anywhere near the fight when it’s happening. After that The rest of the kids sneak into the palace and fight Manfred. They managed to beat him but the door was already open so Phoenix had to go before I closed. Miles decided to go with him
That’s all I have so far for this :).
Thank you if you got to the end of this.
Also I’m currently making an attempt to make this into a fan fiction. But that coming out will depend on my motivation which so far hasn’t been good so it might be a while.

For @queergodot. I was inspired by a few of their ideas so I hope they don’t mind I wrote something for one of them! I can’t remember if I sent this to them already, so I’m posting it here.
(Non disbarment, not written to be romantic, spoilers for aa3, especially bttt)
Phoenix didn’t know what exactly compelled him to visit Mr.Armando.  They hadn’t seen each other since that trial.  The trial where Mia and Maya’s mother died.  The trial where what was left of Dahlia had disappeared, only to be seen in case files.  The trial where Iris had come clean, finally telling him what she had done.  The trial where Diego Armando confessed to murder.  Phoenix didn’t like thinking about that trial, but it was hard not to.  Mr.Armando was surprised as well.  “Wright? Come down here to visit me?”  “I guess,” Phoenix replied, aware he still didn’t know why he was here or what to say.  He had the same confident smile as before, Phoenix noted.  The usual mug of coffee in his hand as well.  Phoenix wondered if they even had coffee in prison.  Mr.Armando noticed Phoenix glancing at his cup.   “The coffee here isn’t as good as my own blends. At least it’s bitter. I almost feel like I’m betraying Godot Blend 102,” Mr.Armando explained, taking a drink from his mug anyways.  “You said 102 was your favourite, right? Just how many blends do you have?”  “Yes. And  253. Each of them emphasizing a different type of bitterness. All of them are as dark as my soul. How do you drink coffee, Wright?”  “I don’t drink coffee often. Usually with a little milk.”  Mr.Armando slammed his mug against the metal shelf when he heard that.  Phoenix recalled he did the same thing in court.  “Coffee needs to be black and bitter! There’s no other acceptable way to drink it! Even a single drop of milk or grain of sugar can ruin a whole cup! You still have a lot to learn, Trite.”  “So I should start drinking black coffee, huh?”  “Yes. And none of that instant stuff. That’s not real coffee.”  Phoenix nodded.  “Noted.”  Mr.Armando finished the cup of coffee he was holding, and pulled another mug out from under the shelf.  Phoenix still didn’t know where they came from.  Visiting time was almost up, so they said their goodbyes, Mr.Armando telling him he could visit again if he wanted to.  Even though all they did was talk about coffee, Phoenix felt better than when he first arrived, and told himself he would visit again.
The next time, they discussed the trial.  Mr.Armando told him about his own trial afterwards, where he was sentenced.  He had defended himself, admitting to the murder, but successfully convinced the judge it was justified defence.  He was charged with tampering with evidence.  He would have to spend 10 years in prison.  “Ten years is actually good, Wright, Mr.Armando had explained to him.  “Considering I moved the body, cleaned up blood… I even messed with the dagger… ten years is pretty good.”  That was one of the heavier visits.  The next time Phoenix visited, he told Mr.Armando about a significant change in his life.  As soon as Phoenix had gotten a total of one sentence out, Mr.Armando cut him off by nearly choking on his coffee.  “You have a what?!” Mr.Armando exclaimed. “I have a daughter now,” Phoenix repeated.  “How did that happen?!”  “I kind of just… adopted her a few days ago.”  Phoenix had explained the basic events of how he had acquired a daughter.  Mr.Armando gathered his composure quite quickly, and looked completely calm by the time he was done with his explanation. “You know Wright, some people just can handle the bitterness of coffee. When someone hands them the milk and sugar, they make the world less bitter too.”  “I still don’t understand Coffeenese.”  Mr.Armando barked a laugh at that.   The conversation shifted to Pearls when Phoenix mentioned she and his new daughter were around the same age.
The next visit, they picked the conversation up where they had left off.  Phoenix told Mr.Armando how Pearls was doing, which eventually led to how Maya was doing.  “They took a break from Kurain and spirit channeling for a while, but they’re back at the village now.” “Maya began taking Pearls to therapy with her.”  “Coffeenese” became a regular joke for when Mr.Armando made up metaphors.
The visit after that the conversation changed to another, certain Fey.  They exchanged stories about Mia.  Cases she had taken, the way she kept forgetting names, or breaking computers.  Phoenix had gotten used to the taste of black coffee, which he drank slightly more frequently now.  Mr.Armando suddenly got more serious.  “Wright… I should have said this at the end of that trial.  I blamed you for the longest time, but now I see what Mia saw in you. I’m sorry for all I put you through.”  “Mr.Armando… I forgave you long ago… Since my first visit here.”  “You better carry on Mia’s legacy as an attorney. And remember, the only time a lawyer can cry is when it’s all over.”

Top 5 Ace Attorney characters and why, including spin offs!!
1. Miles Edgeworth
2. Phoenix Wright
3. Mia Fey
4. Ema Skye
Couldn’t decide who to pick for 5th so just did top four.
Went slightly overboard with my reasons so I’ve chucked them below the cut.
Miles Edgeworth
I probably don’t show it too much nowadays but he is one of my all time blorbos ngl. His character arc is just so well done over the trilogy and then tied off with a bow in the Investigations games.
So, like, with Edgeworth the thing is that his dad was a defence lawyer and that one aspect plays out into the first trilogy pretty strongly. Phoenix becomes defence before of Edgeworth whilst Edgeworth is pushed into the role of prosecution because of von Karma. If not for DL-6, the trajectory of both of their lives would have been so different. And it’s not until von Karma is gone that Edgeworth is free to explore what he himself wants his role to be.
Of course, being... not the most emotionally aware or communicative he takes a long route about it (“accidentally implied I committed suicide” is an original detour, I’ll give him that :V). But as of 3-5, he’s in the position where he takes on Phoenix’s role and is therefore able to see what could have been if he had grown up to be a defence lawyer instead of being forced into prosecution. It’s not an ideal situation, but it’s super important character-wise that he has that opportunity and it forces him to consider his own role as prosecution/defence. And tbh I would've been happy if they'd finished it there with him, but then we have the Investigations games which actually tie off the stuff with his dad and take him to his final decision. Even though he was initially forced into it, he is now proud to be a prosecutor. That’s the role he wants to take.
I’ve barely even said anything about DL-6 either but the first game actually does a lot of heavy lifting in terms of his character because it’s there that he takes his first step and chooses not to head down the path he was straying towards (evidence forgery, lack of belief in defence attorneys in general). Instead, he takes on the view that defence and prosecution working together will get to the complete solution and they both have to trust in each other and try their hardest to get there. But honestly, Edgeworth’s character develops in every single game pre-time skip even if it’s clearly not easy for him. And speaking of not easy for him, I really like how his fear of earthquakes is kept up throughout and never diminished. It was a refreshing treatment when I’m used to a lot of series introducing a phobia just for it to be overcome and never mentioned again.
Anyway, on top of all the stuff above, I like him because it feels like you really have to earn it as the player before he has his first breakthrough? And even once he's had that he's still fairly abrasive/arrogant/lowkey socially oblivious (which makes his interactions with characters like Gumshoe hilarious) but there’s now an understanding underlying his interactions with Phoenix. (Also, even before he mellows out it’s fun to see him going full fan about Steel Samurai)
Phoenix Wright
I know people who say player characters have no real personality because they exist to be projected onto and whilst I can see why that comes about I don’t actually find it an issue with Phoenix? Probably helps we get peeks at him from other POV characters at times, but honestly his inner monologue is just incredibly entertaining. And the disconnect between what he’s thinking (read: snarking or panicking about) vs what he actually says and does is a great source of humour tbh.
My main issue with him comes from the way that in aa4 he gets this alternate characterisation and then come aa5 that’s just... entirely wiped? I’m under the impression there was a load of rewriting/re-steering the series and aa4/5 fell victim to this, but I can’t help but feel if you’re going to overhaul a character like that you should at least try and commit to it? Carry over some more poker references or ways of acting so it doesn’t just become some bizarre aside. Show that even if Phoenix has mostly returned to “normal” that that entire saga (which in canon lasted years) has had an effect.
But like, even despite that, he’s one of my faves. He’s impulsive and doesn’t have his brain screwed on at times but once you’ve earnt his loyalty you have it for life. Mainly though, he’s hilarious.
Mia Fey
Honestly I was pretty neutral on her until aa3 and then her arc there is actually what won me over. Mia as a rookie especially was really humanising? For the first two games most of what we saw of her was this mentor figure who would guide Phoenix but mainly existed as a mentor before anything else. And then third game comes along and we get to see she bluffs it just as much as Phoenix and also she has terrible taste in men. She gets annoyed with terrible defendants (Phoenix), terrible prosecutors (Edgeworth), and just like Phoenix later on, she’s determined not to give up despite setbacks.
And I do really like her connections because that’s where her role shines. She’s Maya’s sister, she’s Phoenix’s mentor, Godot ostensibly killed to save Maya for Mia. Something something that post about haunting the narrative. That’s Mia, affecting the story long after her death. And she drags herself back into the story to get her closure, protect Maya, and pass the torch onto Phoenix. She gets the closest thing to a happy ending she can get. And then she’s gone. For real, this time.
Ema Skye
This is probably my scientist bias I cri. But she's one of the few characters you actually get to see grow up because of the age she is in the first trilogy/investigations vs second trilogy. So you can kinda compare and contrast how bubbly she is initially vs her later “done with everything” self but with the excitement still peeking through. It’s surprisingly realistic how she changes and is much better handled than Phoenix’s equivalent personality shifts imo.
I'll freely admit there are characters with much more to them but eh. Her theme is catchy, she’s a scientist, she likes chocolate fingers, I’m a simple person.
Misc
I have some characters I suspect would make this list from dgs if I could just make myself finish the games >_< (I've been stalled mid game 1 case 3 for months now). I don't want to put anyone from that there until I've finished.
Also shout out to Apollo and Maya who both have plenty of good writing behind them but just don't click as the type of personality I'm interested in :pensive:.
Bonus worst characters round: Hotti, toothbrush guy, the Badgers.

Ace Attorney Episode #2: Turnabout Sisters---1st Trial Transcript
This episode has the first part of Turnabout Sisters.
Phoenix [narrating]: I’m Phoenix Wright, attorney at law. Although I have a perfect record so far, the fact is I’ve only argued one case before a judge, so I’m still a rookie. But as a defense lawyer, it’s my job to help those who have no one in their corner.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phone: Ring!
Maya: Mia! It’s so good to hear from you!
{Text on billboard: Bluecorp}
Mia: Hey, how are you, Maya?
Maya: Pretty good, I guess. It feels like I haven’t seen you in forever; I miss you!
{Caption #1: April 3, 9:27 AM}
{Caption #2: Fey & Co. Law Offices}
Mia: I know. I’m sorry; work’s been crazy. So you’re good?
Maya: I mean, things are okay, but ever since my sister became a high-powered lawyer, I’ve been lonely. Just kidding! I’m great! To be honest, I’m kinda loving the fact that I finally got my own place.
Mia: Yeah? I’m glad to hear it. I hate to call out of the blue and ask for a favor, but---
Maya: I bet I know what it is! You need me to hold some evidence for you, right?
Mia: Ahah, that’s right. I’m working on a pretty major case this time. And I’ve just got a feeling this stuff isn’t safe at the office.
Maya: It’s cool! So what have you got for me?
Mia: A rather unique little clock.
Maya: Unique how?
Mia: Rodin’s “The Thinker” is sitting on top of it, and he says the time out loud. You’ve always been a big fan of toys, right?
Maya: Come on! I may be your little sister, but I’m not a kid anymore!
Mia: Ahmhmhm! Auh! Well, he would normally talk, but he’s quiet at the moment. Because I had to take the electronics out of it. Now the insides are full of papers.
Maya: A brilliant place to stash important evidence!
Mia [from tape]: Hm! You don’t miss a beat!
Man: Smart thinking to use “The Thinker”.
(Mia [from tape]: And yes, they are very important. Now please keep them safe)
Man: So smart. Lovely. Hmhm!

{Caption: Turnabout Sisters--1st Trial}
Phoenix: Wait, what? Boss, I had no idea that you had a sister.
Mia: I hadn’t told you about her?
Phoenix: No. This is news to me.
Mia: She’s gonna be stopping by here tonight. What do you think about joining the two of us for dinner?
Phoenix: Sounds wonderful!
Mia: Good. Why don’t you meet us here at nine sharp?
Phoenix: Yeah! I’ll be there with bells on!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Edgeworth: And with that, the prosecution rests its case.
Judge: Without further ado, I shall now deliver the verdict. Guilty!
Gallery: What? Really? What’s going on?
Defense attorney: WHY WASN’T I INFORMED ABOUT THAT EVIDENCE?!
Edgeworth: You should be asking why your incompetent defense failed your client instead!

Maya: Em, hm! Ewehe!
Phoenix: Wait…who are you?
(Maya: Ewehehe!)
Maya: Ewahah! Emweheha!
Phoenix: Auhuh! Oh!
(Maya: Weheh!)
Phoenix: Don’t be afraid. I’m an attorney here at the law firm---
(Maya: Wehehe!)
Maya: No, Mia! This can’t be happening!
Phoenix: Hold on…are you her little sister?
(Maya: Wehoah! Weheha!)
Maya: Wehehehe…

Gumshoe: Yeah. Ring any bells, pal?
Phoenix: Euh! No…
Maya: Uh, sir? That’s my name.
Gumshoe: Huh? What’s your name?
Maya: Maya Fey. Her sister.
Phoenix’s thoughts: Poor thing.
Gumshoe: Case closed!
Maya: Auoh!
Gumshoe: Let’s talk about this down at the station!
Phoenix: You’re arresting her?!
Gumshoe: That’s right. And you’re comin’ with us too, kid!
(Phoenix: Ahuh?)
Phoenix: Hm…

Reporter [from TV]: I’m here at the Fey and Company Law Offices, which is now the scene of a vicious crime. Last night while working late, the young and beautiful attorney Mia Fey was brutally murdered in her office.
{Text on TV #1: Beautiful Attorney Murdered}
{Text on TV #2: Mia Fey (27)}
Phoenix: It’s unreal.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mia [flashback]: I couldn’t take you under my wing and then skip out on your big day. You're finally leaving the nest.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mia [flashback]: Well done, Phoenix. I’m proud of you.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Reporter [from TV]: The prime suspect in the case is the victim’s younger sister. As of now, the motive is unclear…
Phoenix: AHUAH!
(Reporter [from TV]: …but the police have taken her…)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maya: Ehweh! Eweheh! Hmweh! Eah! Ehwehehe! Awahahahehehehehe!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix’s thoughts: I just don’t think it was her.
{Caption #1: April 4, 9:07 AM}
{Caption #2: Detention Center--Visitor’s Room}
Phoenix’s thoughts: She’s sad, like I expected her to be, but I wonder what the story is with that outfit.
Phoenix: So…
Maya: Thanks for coming.
Phoenix: What about your parents? Talk to them yet?
Maya: Mom and Dad have both passed away.
Phoenix: Auh! You were at the office last night to meet your sister.
Maya: Yeah, she’d asked me to come.
Phoenix: Social visit?
Maya: Actually, she wanted me to hold onto some evidence for an upcoming trial.
Phoenix: What was it?
Maya: A clock. One that looks like “The Thinker”.
Phoenix: Auh!
Phoenix’s thoughts: Larry’s clock again?!
Maya: This may sound weird, but I recorded our conversation on my phone. I don’t know if that would help me…
Phoenix: Ahuh! Yeah, that could definitely help you out!
Maya: Uhah…the only problem is…I don’t have it right now.
Phoenix: That is a problem.
Maya: Ehah…yeah, I know.
Phoenix: Not to be rude, but what’s with that weird---I mean, interesting outfit?
Maya: Huh? Oh, please don’t get the wrong idea, I’m a totally normal person! I’m just a spirit medium…in training.
Phoenix: Uh…like a psychic?
Phoenix’s thoughts: That’s a far cry from normal.
Maya: I suppose it’s kinda like that. How can I put this? Our family’s always been in-tune with spirits. Especially the women.
Phoenix: Woah! Mia could talk to spirits?
Maya: Oh yeah! Mia was one of the most naturally gifted mediums in our whole family!
Phoenix: I had no idea. Wait, Maya, can’t you just ask Mia’s spirit who killed her?
Maya: Uah! Sorry, like I said, I’m still in training.
Phoenix: Okay.
Maya: Calling upon a particular spirit like that is actually a fairly advanced technique.
Phoenix’s thoughts: Of course it wouldn’t be that easy.
Maya: By the way, Mr. Lawyer?
Phoenix: Ahuh?
Maya: Could I ask a favor of you?
Phoenix: Mmhm.
Maya: I’m gonna need you to get in contact with a lawyer named Grossberg for me, if you don’t mind.
Phoenix: Grossberg?
Maya: My sister said if I ever found myself in trouble…I should ask him for help.
Phoenix: Yeah. You know, I’m a defense lawyer too. I can help you.
Maya: I know. But you’re not sure that I’m innocent. I can just tell.
Phoenix: Why do you say that?
Maya: It was the way you looked at me last night.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix [flashback]: Wait, who are you?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Maya: You looked at me like I’d done it.
Phoenix: Ahahuh! No! I was just in shock!
Maya: Oh. It’s…fine.
Phoenix: Ehuh! Okay. I can go and talk to Grossberg. It’s the least I can do.
{Caption #1: April 4}
{Caption #2: Grossberg Law Offices}
Grossberg: Ah, my boy! So you’ve been working under Mia, have you?
{Caption: Grossberg Law Offices Chief | Marvin Grossberg}
Grossberg: She was one of my top students in law school. This is a tragedy. The world can be a cruel place.
Phoenix: Yeah. Well, the reason I’m here, sir, is to ask if you’d defend her sister, Maya.
Grossberg: Oh, Mia had mentioned her several times. She’d asked me to help her if anything were to happen.
Phoenix: So you will?
Grossberg: I, Marvin Grossberg, am a man of my word, so not only will I gladly take young Miss Fey’s case before the judge, I will win it!
Phoenix: I’m sure you will, sir! Thanks again!
Phone: Ring!
Grossberg: Yes? This is Grossberg speaking.
Man: Long time no talk.
Grossberg: Auhuh!
Man: This is Mr. You-Know-Who. Hmhmhm!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix: Huah…
Phoenix’s thoughts: Him takin’ the case is a load off my mind.
Phoenix: Yeah…it’s for the best.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mia [flashback]: I’ve got a yummy dinner for you tonight, Charley.
Phoenix [flashback]: Hmhmhmhm!
Mia [flashback]: What’s so funny?
Phoenix [flashback]: You calling the plant Charley. I just think it’s kinda weird.
Mia [flashback]: Is that so? Because if you ask me, Phoenix Wright is an even weirder name.
Phoenix [flashback]: I’m not talkin’ about the name, boss.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix: Auh? A phone…
Phone: Beep!
Mia [from recording]: How about my office at nine? Does that work for you?
Maya [from recording]: Okay, but only if you buy me dinner too! Oh my gosh, I’ve been craving a big bowl of ramen!
Gumshoe: Huh? You’re, uh…
Phoenix: I’m Phoenix Wright, attorney at law.
Gumshoe: Yeah, yeah, I know who you are. That’s some weird name ya got there!
Phoenix’s thoughts: And Dick Gumshoe’s not totally ridiculous at all.
Gumshoe: Don’t know if I’ve ever seen a guy with such a girly cell phone.
Phoenix: Auh? Ah! Yep!
Gumshoe: I guess you are pretty girly, huh, cupcake?
Phoenix: That’s the first time I’ve been called girly. So you have any breakthroughs in the case yet?
Gumshoe: Ha! Nice try, sport, but I ain’t sharin’ info with the lawyer.
Phoenix’s thoughts: I’m not even defending anybody in the case.
Gumshoe: Well, there’s one thing I’m sure about: you’re gonna lose big. Not a snowball’s chance, hot rod.
Phoenix: What? Why do you say that?
Gumshoe: She’s toast. Edgeworth’s on the case. Mr. Convicter himself.
Phoenix’s thoughts: Miles Edgeworth?!
Gumshoe: Ha! That name makin’ you sweat, snowball?
Phoenix’s thoughts: Honestly…yeah.
{Caption: Objection!}
Edgeworth: OBJECTION!
Phoenix’s thoughts: Miles Edgeworth…made prosecutor at twenty, which was unheard of. And he’s never lost a case. He’s like a guilty verdict machine. One that’ll do absolutely anything for a win.
Gumshoe: So go home and cry into your pillow, sweetheart!
Phoenix: By the way, Detective…had any luck with the witness from last night?
Gumshoe: You must be talkin’ about Miss April May. When I told ya I ain’t sharin’ info, I meant it.
Phoenix’s thoughts: Only the name of your star witness.
Phoenix: I suppose you must’ve let the poor lady go home by now, huh?
Gumshoe: Ha! You have got to be kiddin’ me, bub! She is not leavin’ that room until the whole trial is over!
Phoenix’s thoughts: That means she’s probably still in the hotel across the way.
Gumshoe: My lips are tighter than a fat guy’s waistband!
Phoenix: Hm! Yes, of course, sir!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
{Text on building: BANDO HOTEL}
Phoenix’s thoughts: This must be it.
{Text on door: 303}
Phoenix’s thoughts: Where they’re keeping their witness, April May.
Phoenix: Hello? Anyone here? Ahuh! Excuse me!
Phoenix’s thoughts: Gumshoe’s on the case.
Phoenix: This some kind of girly screwdriver? Ahuhuah! Ahuah! Huh?
April May: Oh my, is that the bellboy?
Phoenix: AAHAUAH!
April May: You can leave the wine there, sweetie! Unless you wanna stay and drink it with me?
(Phoenix: Neaaaahh!)
Phoenix [imitating an old man]: Sorry, but I’m on duty!
Phoenix: Duah! Deuh! Ahuah! Eh, eh eh eh, eh! Deuh, auh! Ahuh? Auhn, auh, auh! Ahuah! Mmeuh! Heah…DUAH! Mm! Mm mm mm, mm…good luck in there, buddy! Ehah!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix: Ehah! Heah, heah, heah! This looks like a wiretap to me.
Phone: Ring!
Phoenix: Euah?
Phone: Ring!
Phoenix: Uh, yes? Mr. Grossberg?
Grossberg: I’m very sorry, son, but I’m afraid I can’t take the case after all.
Phoenix: Really? Why not?! Please, sir! Remember you said this would be a favor to Mia!
Grossberg: I feel horrible about it, but I’m sorry.
Phoenix: Okay, can you at least give me a referral?
Grossberg: I wish I could, my boy, but no lawyer who values his reputation would touch this case.
Phoenix: But why? And what do you mean? Please---
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix: I’m sorry I failed you, Mia.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Child Phoenix [flashback]: Weh, heh! Eweh…hm! Wehe…eweh…ehehweh! Ehweh…ehe…I didn’t do it! I swear! It wasn’t me!
(Children [flashback]: Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief! Thief!)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix’s thoughts: I know what it feels like…to be falsely accused of something. All alone.
Phoenix: Mmeh!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Phoenix: Sorry.
Maya: Don’t be. I know it’s not your fault. No one wanted to take my case, but you tried.
Phoenix: There’s still some hope. Look. These guys said they’d be willing to hear us out. We can’t give up now.
{Text in notebook: Kyle Rivers Law Offices}
Phoenix: So I’m gonna go over and talk to them. Maybe they’ll take it.
Maya: Mr. Lawyer…
Phoenix: Maya…
Maya: I would be so honored for you to defend me!
(Phoenix: It would be my honor to defend you!)
Phoenix, Maya: Ahuh?!
Phoenix: Uh…
Phoenix, Maya: Yes, of course! AHUH!
Phoenix: Augh!
Maya: Owie…
(Phoenix: Mm…)
Phoenix: Nauh!
Maya: Ehmum…
(Phoenix: Ow…)
Maya: Ehwehah…
Phoenix: Auhauah…
Maya: Auh? Eh! Ehe!
(Phoenix: Ow…)
Maya: Ehahahahaha!
(Phoenix: Eah…ehah? Ehehehehehe!)

Phoenix’s thoughts: Last time, I had Mia here by my side. But today, I have to fight alone to save her sister.
Phoenix: It’s been a long time…Edgeworth.
Edgeworth: My word, could that be Phoenix Wright? Never thought I’d see you here.
Phoenix’s thoughts: After years of dreams and hard work…I’ve made it. This is why I became a lawyer in the first place. I’ve got plenty of surprises for you, Miles. You’re gonna learn this is where Phoenix Wright belongs!
Phoenix: Now…
{Caption: Objection!}
Phoenix: OBJECTION!

{Text on screen: Ace Attorney}
Phoenix: OBJECTION!
Phoenix [narrating]: As the trial for Mia’s murder begins, I begin my fight to prove her sister Maya’s innocence. It’s gonna be tough because the prosecutor I’m up against is the conviction machine Miles Edgeworth. He’s never lost a case. The evidence seems to be building against us, but their witnesses’ bogus stories may prove our biggest assets. I’ll save you, Maya, you just gotta have faith in me! Find the contradictions, believe in the truth!

Sholmes crashes your dates
his bromance with Kazuma sometimes drops the "b"
becomes ultra cool eventually
hop into that time machine and date Ryu's ass, but be prepared to deal with period-appropriate homoeroticism and misogyny lol
Extra little shout out to Kazuma Asogi for that one time where he was a defense lawyer for, like, an hour and a half and somehow managed to cram 50 of the horniest one-liners in the game in that very limited time. Date him.

I finished playing Ace Attorney: Justice for All today and holy shit... that last case had me at the edge of my seat, I’ll tell you that.
Spoilers under the cut!
The entire final part was amazing. Franziska finally bursting through the door was the triumphant moment I’d been waiting for (because I really felt like I was about to lose it with how much I had to drag that trial out until then; and I kept saying that either Franzi, or Gumshoe, or Maya will have to have a dramatic entrance and save us).
Speaking of Franziska von Karma, I can’t wait to see what character development might be in store for her in the future. I said from the beginning that there must be more to her than it first seems (like there was with Edgeworth) and it seems like that’s the case.
I also really loved the character of Adrian Andrews. When she finally smiled in court in the end, I literally started to cry, no joke. (Also she’s gay AF, I don’t make the rules. What happened to Celeste hurt her so much because she was in love with her. And when she had that speech about “finally accepting herself”... Yeah, that woman’s gay.) I also definitely ship Adrian with Franziska, because Adrian really seemed to believe Franziska and she said in the end that Franzi reached out to her and... yeah.
Speaking of ships... I’m really into Wrightworth, holy shit. I mean, I already was after the first game, but this game gave them even more shippy moments! And then Phoenix brought up the stuff from their childhood again and... Look, I have a weakness for childhood friends to enemies to lovers (and just regular enemies to lovers), okay? It’s THE superior ship dynamic and it’s why I’ve had Catradora brainrot for two years now.
That part in the end where Phoenix was like “words aren’t enough, I have to show him my feelings differently” - obviously the game wants you to present evidence, but I was just like “Yes, kiss him.”
(I really want to write a Catradora Ace Attorney AU with Adora as Phoenix and Catra as Edgeworth someday. Glimmer and Bow would share Maya’s role (with maybe Frosta as Pearl?), Horde Prime would be Manfred von Karma, Scorpia would be Gumshoe, Angella would fit Mia and... maybe Shadow Weaver as Morgan Fey?)
I also think Maya really deserves a break after everything she’s been through. Losing her sister, getting accused of murder (twice), finding out her aunt was conspiring against her, then getting kidnapped and starved... give that girl a break, please.
It was nice to see Edgeworth so concerned about Maya as well. I really need them to be friends. (The reason I hated Edgeworth in the beginning of the first game was because he was trying to get Maya declared guilty, so having him now help save her was good closure on that.)
I’m really caught up in the last case right now, but I’ve got to say I also really loved the second one. The whole mystery air of Kurain village was just my vibe, I love that I figured out the plot-twist on this one, and Mimi Miney was an amazing character and the only one of the real killers so far that I felt genuinely bad for.
The whole circus case was weird, though.
[EDIT: Oh yeah also, one thing I forgot: The funniest moment in the entire game was when Phoenix asked De Killer what his fee is and the judge thought Phoenix was planning to kill him. I was laughing so hard 😂.]

So I said this in the tags of my last post, but then I went wacky and doodled up some pages of this other AU idea that stemmed from the idea of that comic I did
In this AU, Miles goes to Diego Armando’s office a few weeks after the Fawles trial. There is no cocky, arrogant, or smug air about him like there was during the trial and instead he seems really shaken and nervous. Diego’s like “hey what’s wrong?” And Miles is quiet but then says that he needs help. He tells Diego that he can’t get the image of Fawles’s suicide out of his head and that he has no one he can talk to about this. Diego asks about Miles’s mentor, but Miles says that there’s absolutely no way he could ever go to his mentor for help with emotional stuff because it would show “weakness” and he also isn’t comfortable with von Karma. To make a long story short (because I’ve thought so much about this), Miles ends up pleading with Diego to protect him from von Karma just in case he goes after him for switching sides to be a defense attorney. He knows that von Karma will see him as weak and a traitor for switching teams after a single case, but Miles can’t be someone he’s not. Diego points out that Miles seems to be trying to be who von Karma wanted him to be. So he asks Miles what he wants to be, and Miles responds by saying he wants to be his dad (just like in my 1985 animatic 😭).
So Miles decides to renounce prosecution. He rips off his cravat and throws it in the garbage in Diego’s office and declares that he’ll become a defense attorney. He also asks Diego is he could be his mentor to help him in both being better at defense law and also just being better with interacting with people.
He joins the Grossberg Law Offices and works alongside Mia and Diego to gather evidence on Dahlia Hawthorne, as he now too believes that she has done terrible things.
After Diego is poisoned, Miles freaks out because people just keep dying or getting hurt around him and it scares him. (Oh…baby boy just wait until Mia dies too-)
He takes the case to defend Phoenix, gets TERRIFIED when Phoenix eats the poison necklace, and then at the end, Phoenix was like “oh wow! You’re a defense attorney now?? Lmao when did that happen??” Bc he had been too busy simping over Dahlia. But Miles tells him that he should still pursue law so that they could work together and also so that Phoenix’s law classes and studying wouldn’t have gone to waste. So Phoenix becomes a lawyer and works with Miles and Mia at the Fey & Co Law Offices until she dies and then it becomes Edgeworth & Co Law Offices because he had been a lawyer for longer.
I like the idea that in this AU, Phoenix and Miles obviously have huge crushes on each other, but these idiots still refuse to acknowledge or admit it <3
Also :((( when Diego wakes up, he still goes on his whole antagonist arc as Godot, and Miles refuses to tell Phoenix the truth about who he is. See, I also like the idea that in this AU, Nick and Miles are still as cagey with their past and truths as they are in normal AA
As you can see, I am perfectly normal !! I think about ace attorney a very normal amount!! 🤭

Dumb shit I’ve said/heard during Mock Trial as AA characters
Phoenix Wright: I’m Phoenix Wright from Capcom Ace Attorney and I’m going to badger the witness constantly and use inadmissible evidence because I’m cool like that. (This one was me)
Miles Edgeworth: Objection...no, just no.
Franziska VonKarma (Also Mia Fey): If I see one more man in this courtroom I’m gonna lose it *another man walks in, leaving me as the only woman in the courtroom* That’s it, I’m losing it.
Maya Fey: I mean, my wife says I wouldn’t know the difference between a brick of cocaine and an actual brick.
Gumshoe: Listen, I may be a little scatter-brained but I think that calling me a dunce is a little harsh. *Lawyer asks them what the defendant’s name is* Uhhhhhhh
Apollo Justice: There can’t be another witness who’s a criminal. *Next witness is in prison for life because of grand larceny* AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Trucy Wright: So we’re saying that this witness faked his death because he’s a petty dick? Cool, I like that.
Klavier Gavin: *When asked if they would like to make an objection to a lawyer who was asking irrelevant questions* No, Your Honor. Honestly, I’m living for the drama of it all.
Athena Cykes: I’m not saying that this witness is dating the prosecutor IRL, I’m just saying that they get up to some weird stuff on the podium.
Sebastian Debeste: And you still claim that you had no idea about the murder. *Defendant responds yes* Cool, no further-WAIT NO THAT’S PERJURY.
Justine Courtney: You all tried your best, but some of you need to brush up on your knowledge *glares at an attorney who forgot the word for hear-say*.

DadWorth AU: Part 4 (Trials & Tribulations)
Unlike the previous parts, this is mostly just shenanigans since Kay and Miles at this point are starting to work on bettering their relationship after their reunion in Farewell, My Turnabout. So it’s fun and kind of angsty times because Phoenix still falls off a bridge. Miles is present for most of the cases, excluding Stolen, but his appearances mostly take place in the background.
< Part 3 | Part 5 >
Turnabout Memories
Kay’s junior year at Themis starts and the students are given a chance to look into previous cases for a project that they have to do. Kay decides to do the one that inspired her to be an attorney. Or at least, for her to start following Mia’s career. Which if anyone remembers from part 1, was the State v. Wright 2014.
At the time of the case happening, Kay didn’t recognize the defendant’s name. But now... Now she knows who it is. So she goes directly to Phoenix to get an explanation. In front of just about everybody.
Today is Embarrass Phoenix Wright Day.
If you’re wondering, Kay is absolutely stunned by the fact that Phoenix ate the necklace. She knew it happened, but it’s only now hitting her that the defendant who swallowed the bottle and the amazing attorney who so far has been the only one to beat Miles and her semi-mentor figure are the same person.
The Stolen Turnabout
With Miles out of the country, Kay (and maybe the boys klavier and sebastian too, I’m not sure) is dragged down to Lordly Tailor by Maya, and that’s where things go from there. She’s kind of surprised that it was the urn that got stolen, picking up pretty quickly that it wasn’t worth that much in the first place. (Though this might be due to her involvement in 2-2, so she knows that it has been broken before.)
Kay stands with Phoenix on the matter of whether or not Ron actually stole the urn. According to her, the guy “couldn’t even pickpocket a blind man”. Pearl kicks her in the shin before running out of the detention center. Maya and Kay have gotten pretty close to each other because of the events of Farewell, since they were kidnapped and that’s some strong bonding there. So, Maya’s hurt by both of them believing in Ron’s innocence, but with Kay’s involvement, she quickly starts to think that they might be right sooner rather than later. Still, since it hurts, Kay takes Maya’s place temporarily on the first day of investigating.
Things that happen here are Kay starting to steal stuff herself. For example, she swipes the blackmail letter on the first visit to the DeLite’s apartment. (”kay, we’re defense attorneys. we don’t steal.” “but you take evidence all the time. how is that not the same thing?” “...moving on--”.)
Kay can’t stand Atmey, especially when he starts rambling on the way he does. She both states that Gumshoe’s a better detective than he is (some of that being bias, but still) and calls him out when he claims that Miles has called Godot the best prosecutor in the country. Miles doesn’t even know who he is. Phoenix finds her interactions with him slightly hilarious (it’s a sixteen year old girl tearing an eccentric a-hole a new one, after all.)
Kay’s able to stand co-counsel for the entirety of this trial due to it taking place completely on a weekend. Which means she also gets to meet Godot. He’s... To her, he’s flat out weird. He’s Cyclops with a caffeine addiction. And he’s not able to avoid her snark either.
She gets really happy when they get the Not Guilty verdict on the first day, and her relationship with the Feys gets patched up, too. And then all that goes down the drain when Ron is arrested for murder. More investigation is needed.
When it’s revealed that Ron is actually Mask ☆ DeMasque, Kay feels kind of bad over the remark she made the day before since most of those thefts were kind of impressive to her after she read about them. That’s about as much as what happens during the investigation. She really gets into the whole phantom thief stuff, much to Phoenix’s dismay.
When it comes time for the trial, Kay feels so much satisfaction in catching Atmey. She hates him so much. She doesn’t, however, like the fact that Godot keeps throwing coffee at the defense team.
I should note that Kay thinks that Godot’s voice sounds familiar, but she can’t place why at this time. It’s been YEARS since the events of Beginnings, and they didn’t even interact. Kay just watched the trial and heard him speak. So, that whole mystery is still under wraps for now.
Recipe for the Turnabout
Kay, Klavier and Sebastian are at Wright & Co. when Gumshoe bursts through the door, scaring the crap out of the three of them and Maya in the process. She, much like Phoenix, is confused as heck as to what he’s talking about when he tells them about the phony trial. She can also vouch for what happened and the fake Phoenix. (I have plans for what happened there, i just need to watch/play the game there myself...) So everyone is confused, and this warrants some footwork.
Phoenix Wright ends up being followed by a group of teenagers during his investigation. This has been going on for a while. He’s accepted it. It’s part of his life now.
When it comes to Tres Bien, Maya’s not the only one who gets roped into working there. Through misunderstandings, Kay gets pulled in as well. The guys kind of just run off, leaving the girls in their unfortunate situation for now.
Phoenix is stuck with the boys for the time being, which leads to some pretty fun and interesting interactions, including their reactions to meeting Tigre for the first time. Sebastian’s just confused because Tigre is taller, older and the only thing about Phoenix that he shares is their hair style. Klavier verbally voices this, just going off on how the hell anyone could mistake the two. (and loses his shit at the cardboard badge. from a distance, yeah, but seriously?!)
When they eventually come back to the restaurant, being the stupid teenage boys that they are, Klavier and Sebastian find the situation Kay is in hilarious. Klavier takes a picture of Kay in the Tres Bien outfit because “everyone needs to see this”. (Everyone mostly being Ema, whose in Europe.) Kay tackles him to try and get him to delete the photo, but he doesn’t. It becomes Kay’s contact picture in his phone.
whether or not kay continues to work here after the case is still up in the air. her and miles’ financial situation is pretty good, but kay’s also the independent type, so i feel like she’d want to save her own money for things instead of having to ask for it.
It’s lucky that at this point the girls are saved from their forced jobs, and Phoenix brings them down to the park, where things go as they do in canon with Maya channeling Mia to get information out of Kudo. Phoenix just kind of pushes Kay behind him while Mia does her thing, because if Miles ever found out he let Kay do something like that, he would never forgive him. It does lead, however, to this interaction here:
“and what have we learned today?” “take what you got and exploit the men who think with their di--” “okay! let’s get back to the investigation, shall we?!” “...klavier, why are you looking down at your chest?” “huh? just thinking.”
listen, klavier doesn’t button up his shirt all the way for a reason, and this is why.
Kay gets a bit ticked off that the prosecutor is Godot again (something that the guys predict because she complained about her hair smelling like coffee for days after being in the splash zone of the last trial). Fortunately, she doesn’t have to be here since the trial primarily covers school days. However, the Themis Trio does help out with the investigation when they’re free, taking a look at Blue Screens while Phoenix and Maya handle Tres Bien. They regroup when its time to head to Tender Lender.
Things go pretty much the same from there until the end with the confrontation with Tigre at Tres Bien. There’s another change here since Tigre and Armstrong are outnumbered. Phoenix still gets punched, but its not Tigre who grabs the medical papers. It’s Sebastian in a moment of panic. This basically leads to them playing keep-away with the papers as they try to get out with them and get away from Tigre. It doesn’t work out, though, because eventually as the papers are returned to Phoenix and the gang goes to flee, Tigre grabs and pulls an off-guard Kay back. It’s an exchange -- the papers for the girl. (think that one situation in ablaze but without the threat of getting shot.)
But that’s not what happens because like in canon, Gumshoe comes to the rescue. And he is more pissed off than before because that’s his pseudo-niece. Phoenix and the kids run out of there as soon as they can. Later that night, Miles asks about the bruises on Kay’s arm from where Tigre had grabbed her. She’s not sure what to say.
Miles gets involved in the background of this case due to Kay’s injury, helping out Gumshoe when it comes to getting the bottle analyzed (and getting assault added to the list of crimes Tigre is charged with.) Both him and Kay are pleased when Tigre gets arrested.
Turnabout Beginnings
We already covered this case in Part 1. Kay was in the audience watching. Primarily, this is mostly skipped aside from Kay mentioning it to Phoenix very earlier on. I’m talking like... last part early during Reunion. Thinking about that while in the hospital sparks his interest in taking a look at it via Mia’s case files.
Bridge to the Turnabout
With Miles out of the country, Kay is free to kind of do whatever. Because she’s friends with Maya, Pearl drags her up to Hazakura, partially against Kay’s will because its cold and she hates the cold.
She faintly recognizes Iris because as said before, she sat in on Beginnings. She knows what Dahlia looks like. However, because it was so long ago for her, she doesn’t quite remember why. She does play into Larry’s whole artist thing, but refuses to call him Laurice. (”okay... good for you, larry.” “laurice!” “i’m not calling you that.”)
As for Elise, the most that Kay knows about her is that she’s an author. Though, unlike Maya, she does take note of how similar she looks to the painting of Misty, as well as Maya and Mia. (maya must’ve noticed some similarities herself, but why she didn’t say anything is a mystery to me.)
Kay’s starting to think that this trip might not be so bad... until everything goes to shit when she’s woken up by a scream. As a result, both she and Phoenix head out to the courtyard and discover Elise’s body. Unlike Phoenix, however, Kay has her phone on her. She’s not able to tell him this, though, because Phoenix is already running to the bridge. She gives chase, trying to catch up.
Things go on as normal. The bridge is on fire, they meet up with Larry. And Phoenix runs across the bridge. He falls. Kay screams.
Kay and Larry both find and pull Phoenix out of the river. Larry calls the police while Kay is trying to calm herself down and keep Phoenix from possibly dying. The only person she can think of to call is Miles. So yes, in this version of the story, Kay handles the phone call to Edgeworth, so things are a bit more well explained on that end. Not entirely, because Kay’s freaking the fuck out, but a bit better.
The police arrive, Iris is arrested and Phoenix is taken to the hospital with Kay riding in the ambulance as well (after some heavy persuasion.) She’s at the hospital all night, and is there when Miles arrives. He’s relieved that she’s alright, especially after the phone call he received from her last night. It’s pure luck that Phoenix survived the fall with minimal injury and a cold. Kay calls him stupid in at least seven different ways when they’re finally let into his room.
Kay is still freaked out over everything that happened the night before, so she sticks by her dad’s side. She’s there to straighten out Larry at the detention center and explain the magatama in a bit more detail than a fever-hazy Phoenix since she’s seen him use it multiple times before. Alon
Basically, Kay is the Maya to Miles’s Phoenix here. Miles doesn’t want her to be on the case with him, but she does so anyway. She claims it’s because she’s the defense attorney in training and she knows more about it than he does since she was there, too. During the investigation, Kay finds out about Pearl and Maya being on the other side of the bridge and gets worried as heck for their safety.
She’s also the one who handles getting Franziska to prosecute. Kay lies and says that Phoenix had a pretty big case on his hands that still needed a prosecutor, and Franziska took the bait. Needless to say, Fran’s a bit ticked off when she discovers the truth.
But the best part about this is father-daughter standing at the bench together. It is a lot of fun banter between them and Franziska, too. And Kay gets another Larry-Induced headache when he testifies on the stand. Though, due to what happened with Goodbyes, she trusts him to some extent and his trying to figure out what the heck actually happened.
When the trial gets out and Phoenix is back in the saddle, Kay calls him stupid again for investigating while sick. She works in tandem with both him and Miles for this part of the case. Yeah, she’s part of the investigation team.
She’s relieved when they finally find Pearl on the other side of the bridge (Kay gets a small hug from Pearls, have that visual.) She, like everyone else, is confused about why Godot is there. Unlike the others, however, Kay is incredibly close to fighting a man about twice her age when he starts going after Phoenix for his involvement in Mia’s death.
When the earthquake hits, the first thing Kay’s mind goes to is her dad. She races to find Miles first before anything else. She’s lived with him since she was ten years old. She knows about his fear of earthquakes.
After discovering the locks on the door, Kay does follow Miles out to the garden. He does get a hug from her, since she’s not sure what else to do at the time. Compared to last year, it shows that they’re doing a lot better. She’s also there when Phoenix comes by and manages to figure out the Hawthorne connection pretty quickly. She leaks the information to Phoenix, despite Miles’s protests. (”i’m not a prosecutor, so i don’t have to keep my mouth shut.”)
When it comes to the trial the next day, Kay’s in the gallery with everyone else since Phoenix claims that he has to do this alone (another thing that Kay calls him stupid for.) She’s on the edge of her seat the entire time -- watching as Phoenix unmasks and stands before the spirit of the woman who tried to kill him. And after exercising her from Maya’s body, Kay claims that she’s no longer phased by anything weird that happens in court.
Though, she is surprised when Phoenix accuses Godot of the crime. She doesn’t like the guy as much as the next person -- he’s a huge jerk -- but what? As the mystery begins to unravel, she starts to see how he got there, she’s kind of awestruck. She never expected Phoenix to come into his own like this. In the end, though, Godot confesses and things go pretty much the same way as they do in canon.
After all is said and done, Kay promises that she’ll become a defense attorney as great as both Mia Fey and the amazing Phoenix Wright. Phoenix will deny that this ever happened, but he did start to tear up a little upon hearing that. He becomes her mentor after the events of this case. It’ll become an important factor in Kay’s decisions later on that year... right around April.
And that’s it for the trilogy! There are some more parts that I want to add on, such as the ripples all this has created in the later games -- the investigation games especially.

*rolls up to your blog in an office chair* heard you wanted head can- *chair gets caught on a rug and I faceplant*
- When they were kids Edgeworth slept over at Phoenix's house a couple times which is where he was introduced to ~video games~. It's so hard to get him to admit it but he loves games and always will. He takes a Nintendo DS with him on business trips so he can play the 2008 Steel Samurai game when he's had a hard day. He and Phoenix rely on each other to beat Zelda games. Phoenix is better at the puzzles and temples and Miles is...oddly enough incredible at combat and boss fights. (Never play smash bros with him he knows every combo).
- Miles thought he hated physical touch until he became involved with Phoenix and suddenly realized how touch starved he is. He's still uncomfy with PDA but when they're alone he is the biggest cuddle bug and no one can convince me otherwise.
-Phoenix had to get surgery once and when he came out of anesthesia this happened https://youtu.be/DiviQfLyQX4 Miles absolutely will not let him live it down
-When Phoenix first adopted Trucy she had a hard time sleeping alone because she was afraid that Phoenix would be gone when she woke up and another father would have left her. Phoenix would always let her sleep on his chest so she wouldn't get lonely or scared. Eventually her fears subside for the most part but Phoenix is always happy to let her sleep with him if she has a nightmare.
-Okay I don't have a specific headcannon for this but like...what happened to Miles' mom???
-Phoenix once had a terrible, vivid nightmare that Kristoff kidnapped and tortured Miles and Trucy and he wasn't able to save them. He woke up sobbing and drenched in sweat. After Miles was able to comfort him he gets a warm washcloth and gently cleans all the dried sweat off Phoenix. It's so tender and quietly intimate and Phoenix weeps. His head is in Miles' lap as he cleans Phoenix so he'll be more comfortable and every time Phoenix thinks about it he cries because he loves that man so much.
-Miles is a casual birdwatcher.
-Every thanksgiving Phoenix and Trucy watch a TERRIBLE comedy together and eat cheese whiz on whatever is in their pantry.
"I'm thankful for this fake cheese". "and I'm thankful I didn't make this movie!"
-Phoenix and Maya always spend the anniversary of Mia's death together. They swap stories about her, even if they've already heard them before. Mia always feel especially close to them on those days.
-Phoenix and Maya have matching bi pride pins.
-Phoenix likes to eat froot loops with grape juice instead of milk. He enjoys the horrified looks he gets from his friends.
*gets back in my chair, super embarrassed* okay byyyeeeee
DONT BE EMBARRASSED THESE ARE SO FUCKING GOOD!!! seriously you guys are so rad and have so many fantastic ideas... weeps.....
LITERALLY I HAD SOME OF THESE IDEAS BEFORE TOO!!!! like the concept of phoenix and edgeworth (and maybe larry too but he’s on thin ice) having sleepovers when they were little is something i think about an unhealthy amount.... AND MILES BEING CUDDLY TOO!!! i think the concept of him learning to enjoy stuff like snuggling with his husband and playing video games is so so precious and important because it shows how much he’s growing now that mvk isn’t around to emotionally stunt him. AND THE BIRDWATCHING!!! i talked to my partner about this and we agreed that he would TOTALLY get really into that shit after he and phoenix retired. like overall both of their lives have been a shitshow, they’ve earned the right to be boring for a change fjdnfd
as for miles’ mom, the only ideas i have for that are kinda boring and generic: she probably either died when miles was young (during childbirth or something) or left gregory shortly after miles was born. i’m leaning towards the death thing though because like. who in their right mind would leave gregory edgeworth?? that man is a catch and a half.
man. fucking.. “man wakes up after surgery and hits on his wife”... that would totally be something phoenix would do, specifically the “holy shit i hit the jackpot” kind of stuff. he just loves his husband! and he thinks he’s hot!! he is such a good partner and he’d be totally respectful of miles’ boundaries and stuff and they would take SUCH GOOD CARE OF EACH OTHER!!!! the part about miles comforting him after a nightmare... god tier. he’s returning the favor from when phoenix would comfort him for years when his recurring nightmare reared its ugly head again.
and YES PHOENIX AND MAYA BISEXUAL MLM/WLW SOLIDARITY. their friendship is so so important and it makes perfect sense that they would spend the anniversary of mia’s death together since she’s the reason they even met in the first place... they’re practically siblings in my eyes, big brother/little sister energy coming off of these two big time.
i also think phoenix would indeed be a fantastic dad but i can’t really say much more about it since i haven’t played apollo justice and don’t really know a ton about trucy so. but their father-daughter dynamic seems great from the stuff i’ve absorbed. also the dialogue for them on thanksgiving? a+ perfect spot-on, love it. phoenix would absolutely have the Worst taste in food so the cheese whiz and froot loops with grape juice feels so canon to me.

rite of turnabout thoughts bc i am still very slowly working my way thru the games i never finished
- man is it good to see spirit chanelling - which has been part of the world since the first game - finally get its day in court in a way that isn’t either “lets channel mia to save us from our own stupidity help” or “uhhh maybe i killed someone while channeling”. if u are in a murder mystery plot and u can speak to ghosts then you should be speaking to ghosts pls and thank u
- i do know pretty much everything that happens in this game already but it is fun to see how early they cover some of the rebel stuff. i wasn’t expecting most of it until the last case
- absolutely hilarious how phoenix finds out his employee (apprentice? junior? unwillingly adopted child?) was raised by an infamous rebel organisation in a small autocratic nation and never mentioned that and is just like... u know what, i’m too busy to actually process this right now, lets get back to the case. phoenix 0 braincell moments.
- i’m just saying that if i was investigating someone and found out that they were my friend’s dad u bet i would be on the phone
- there’s also the super interesting thing of how datz and nahyuta were once something akin to family, and here is datz at trial with amnesia and in disguise and at what point did each of them work out each others identity? genuinely would not put it past nahyuta to realise super early and just try and keep it quiet for various reasons --->> it’s more convenient to the trial if datz’s identity is hidden + the fact that nahyuta is still secretly on the rebels side but just can’t be publicly seen acting that way. it seems like a nahyuta sort of move. of course, this fails as soon as datz’s true identity is revealed and he immediately turns around to talk directly to nahyuta, at which point he then has to make a show of being anti-rebel. interesting stuff.
- ahlbi continues to buck the trend of kids in these games by being genuinely likeable to me. he’s adorable, and I’m going to be very sad when we inevitably never see him in canon again
- *adds another head injury to the “phoenix’s skull is made of concrete” tally.* also the absolute conceit of this man to be like “u can’t testify with amnesia”, sir u tried a case with amnesia. what the fuck.
- some interesting world building that i will note down on the big alternative history file that i never do anything with.
- two in a row for this case and magical turnabout with “cases i could see myself replaying” which is actually pretty good for midgame aa
