Doomdark’s Revenge (ZX Spectrum)
Developed/Published by: Mike Singleton / Beyond Software Released: 12/1984 Completed: 06/05/2022 Completion: I would love to lie about this, but i rescued Morkin, got him almost all the way back to the gate and Luxor randomly died to a dragon, which you cannot undo. I’m counting it. Trophies / Achievements: n/a
I wrote extensively about Doomdark’s Revenge’s predecessor, Lords of Midnight previously, and it remains one of my favourites of the last year; a ZX Spectrum game that’s more ambitious than, honestly, the majority of games that even come out now. So ambitious that it’s only now I could even understand it, really.
Doomdark’s Revenge is the sequel which came out, astonishingly, within eight months of the original, which makes you think maybe it would be just an expansion pack of sorts. And, yeah, it is mostly the same systems, but it’s a game that represents absolutely when ambition gets a bit too much–for the ZX Spectrum, for the player, and likely for the designer, too.
In Doomdark’s Revenge, you’ve got another novella to read which sets up the game: whatever the player managed in their own playthrough, Morkin and Luxor have managed to destroy the ice crown and win a military campaign, and Morkin is now set to be wed to Tarithel. Except awkwardly it turns out that Doomdark had a daughter, Shareth, who lives up north (you wouldn’t know her) and has managed to bewitch Morkin and kidnap him.
So now Tarithel has given chase, and Luxor has also given chase, and they find themselves in Icemark, a brand-new and huge map that also happens to have an entire tunnel system (so basically two maps) and tens of new lords all of whom use their own AI to travel around the map (rather than just sitting in their castles waiting to be recruited like the last one).
If I thought Lords of Midnight was a lot, this is… a lot. The last game was easily comprehensible by comparison. In the last one, you could accurately map where environmental enemies (wolves and dragons, etc.) and allies were, with only the moving enemy armies creating complexity. Here, everything is moving all the time. I’ve got to again give huge props to Chris Wild (who has only recently put out the 2.0 versions of Lords of Midnight and Doomdark’s Revenge) because without his modern adaptation and its auto-map I do believe this would be completely unplayable. I do wish, however, that he’d make it even easier on the player by showing where the other lords and their armies were on the map too.
You see, the game plays out similarly to Lords of Midnight; with Tarithel, you’re questing alone or with a small party to try and grab Morkin, who is about as far away as it’s possible to be. With Luxor, you’re basically trying to mass a huge enough army that you can either find Shareth (I have no idea how you would) or wait for her to show up and kill her.
The thing is that the game ends up playing out a bit less excitingly than the original, even though you can tell it was designed to be more exciting. There, you’d play several games, stumbling about and opening up the map, and strategizing the best way to get your armies together, usually ending up in several skirmishes that were actually sort of predictable.
Here, you never get out of the “stumbling about” phase. Your best hope is to wander around near the beginning area of the game, and hopefully bump into lords who you can recruit. It’s not actually that bad, because most lords (even the evil ones, it seems?) are pretty happy to get recruited if they meet the right guy, so there’s quickly a snowball effect as you end up with what feels like most of the lords on the map because your giant lord is down with all his giant lord homies, your barbarian lord good with barbarians, and so on.
The map, also, is simply massive and not at all as memorable as the first game. Sure, there are forests and mountains and so on, but it seems much more open than the first one, leading to quite a lot of wandering (and giving the AI way too much freedom) and the tunnel system could not be more boring (hope you like looking at black screens.) It just seems to take ages to get anywhere, and in my (admittedly non-winning) final game, I had played for over 20 in-game days before I was on the cusp of getting Morkin back to the Gate of Varenorn.
The thing is, I kind of understand why this all seems like a good idea. Not simply the “more” of it, but the fact that the world is intentionally more alive than the first game. It’s more “realistic” that each Lord would be moving about and have his own intentions; a more open map and tunnels increase the ways to navigate the world, and so on. But unfortunately without giving the player near-perfect information of the game state, it’s simply frustrating and (whisper it) kind of boring with how long it takes to get to Morkin.
Which is why I’m not going to have another go after almost finishing the game. Let me set out the scene: Morkin is a day’s ride from the Gate of Varneorn. A group of friendly giants and dwarfs are in a skirmish north and seem to have killed Shareth. Luxor has just moved north slightly to make sure an army that approaches isn’t antagonistic; he quickly recruits them.
On return to the gate, despite being accompanied by 22 lords and a massive army, he is killed by a dragon. The game is over. No backsies.
Remember last week when I deleted Bloodborne? It was literally nothing compared to how I felt at this moment. Hours of work literally destroyed by a single dice roll and nothing I could do about it. Talk about the Dark Souls of video games. I’d won! I was a turn from winning. But also, I wasn’t. Cruel, cruel fate.
So anyway, that’s the problem with Doomdark’s Revenge, it’s too long, it’s not as memorable, and it’s too random. If you play it though… just never move Luxor, ok?
Will I ever play it again? Or maybe Chris Wild will include a turn undo if Luxor dies. Please Chris!!! Maybe I can still do it!!!
Final Thought: So sadly creator Mike Singleton was never able to finish the “real” third game in the series, The Eye of the Moon, but it was apparently going to be four times larger than the original which, you know, sack that. He did go on to make a sequel, Lords of Midnight: The Citadel in 1995, but I’m not sure I’ll ever get round to that one. However, we do have his 16-bit Lords of Midnight-a-like Midwinter showing up in 1989, which I’m very much looking forward to trying to see how he evolved the systems–and hopefully not just “more”.

been on the until dawn subreddit recently and a couple of recent posts got me thinking so I wanna ask a question and see some community thoughts
in case y'all didn't know, there was an interview back in like 2015 with Will Byles, creative director, where it was revealed that until dawn had a cut pregnancy storyline, though they never revealed who it was and who with, just that it existed but got taken out for being too distracting from the main storyline
so...
I've seen arguments for most of the girls, so I wanna add those here, just in case y'all want some more info before you vote
SAM
The argument for Sam focuses mostly on her 'I thought we had a connection' line with Josh, making his spiral and inevitable death/turn more tragic, and it helps pair the two more when they're the odd singletons in a cast of romantic couples. also, Sam's stomach-centric death adds a nice layer of tragedy to the whole situation
EMILY
This one's pretty easy, it's the Mike/Matt drama turned up to eleven. You can throw in speculation on who the father is, if there was cheating involved, all that fun stuff
JESS
She fills the horror stereotype of slut, so being pregnant ties into that, and with how little presence she has in the final game it could make sense that a storyline of hers was cut and dropped her screentime
ASH
Admittedly, I don't think it was Ash, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone argue for it being her, so purely for the shock value of it I think she's still a contender, and it could have maybe played into the 'whose life do you save?' traps, kinda like the Saw shotgun carousel trap
HANNAH
Now, I only recently saw an argument for this, I'd never considered her, but in an earlier version of the game Josh was apparently actually her boyfriend and not her brother, and her being pregnant when disappearing could make the revenge plot hit a Lot harder
BETH
Honestly, she's just here because all the other girls are. I genuinely cannot think of a single reason why it would be Beth - she has too little presence for even the shock factor that Ash could have, it wouldn't really mean anything, but she's still possible as long as nothing is confirmed so. there she is
so yeah! I'd love it if y'all could vote and maybe share your own thoughts and opinions!

So this has been something that's been asked for a few times, so after a long times work, here we have it! A hypothetical voice cast for the characters of Autobot Academy. If there's a character you don't see, it's as we don't want to rush figuring out a character. We may update this list in the future, however it'll be in our own time, so we won't be taking any questions about specific missing characters. And hey, if you have your own voices that don't match up with these, then feel free to stick with that!

"Born Into Trouble as the Sparks Fly Upward." The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra & Tra-La-La Band 2001, Constellation (Bandcamp)
22 years ago Montreal’s other iconic prodigiously-membered post-rock band released their second LP. What shows and movies from the modern day would El and Mike love and watch? 😊
Oooo! This is a good one, because I’m extra I gotta do it for all of them lol
I think the entire party (mostly the boys) would all love Game of Thrones and Star Wars and comic book movies of varying degrees. I think they would also like anime but I'm not too sure if I think someone would like it more than the others.
Mike seems like he would like fantasy/sci fi/adventure shows but ones with really good characters and writing since he’s a creative writer. I think he would love stuff like Supernatural, Game of Thrones (he would have read those books), definitely Lord of the Rings. I feel like he would also like Star Wars and Star Trek but not as much as Dustin. He’d like the comic book movies.
El would love the The Bachelor/The Bachlorette, 90 Day Fiancé and all that since she likes soap operas, which she might still tune into. I feel like she would be into the “reality” shows. El and Mike would watch some of these shows together and he hates them but he secretly likes them, he'd be like "are you watching the episode without me??"
Dustin would looooove Star Wars but I can also see him watching stuff like CSI and other kind of sci-fi shows. But he loved Firefly and is still mad it was cancelled.
Lucas loved The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and he watched All American but likes action, suspense and thrillers movies. I feel like he would looove Mission Impossible and he'd be into some of the war movies. He would also love some of the blaxploitation movies too. I can see him being a fan of John Singleton movies, maybe even Spike Lee. He enjoys the Fast and Furious movies.
I feel like Max doesn't watch a lot of television and movies but when she does, she likes comedies. I feel like she'd be a sitcom girl. But she liked Black Mirror.
Will likes horror movies, so he'll be checking out stuff like Hereditary. But I think since he'd be an animator in doing art something, he would be interested in how they did stuff. So he would watch it and enjoy it but then like to figure out how they did the special effects. But he would also watch fantasy stuff too, I think he'd like The Sandman.
Jonathan... hm I not sure. I can see him just watching whatever Nancy is watching because he likes to sit with her.
Nancy for sure watches Law and Order, I think she'd give any law show a chance but Law and Order is her jam. Grey's Anatomy for sure. Mad Men. I can see her also enjoying The Handmaid's Tale. She also loved Sex and the City even though she critiques some of the stuff.
Steve liked Breaking Bad and probably The Wire and constantly talks about them lol.
Robin is a connoisseur of tv shows and movies, she'll give anything a try but she watches Grey's Anatomy with Nancy.

Star Trek: The Rebel Universe
Original Release: 1987
Developer: Mike Singleton
Publisher: Firebird Software
Original Platform: Amiga ST
Tumblr media
The Rebel Universe certainly has ambition. It provides a large region of space to explore called the Quarantine Zone, where the Klingons have managed to mind control Federation crews using special dilithum. As a result, everyone in this area is hostile to you. There are multiple ways to win the game, such as destroying, components for the mind control system, jamming Klingon communications or finding and releasing a virus to keep Klingons peaceful.
Unfortunately, the interface for the game is terrible. You swap between different panels to control different aspects of the ship, but it is extremely clunky and you have to often return to the “bridge” screen to select who you need. The smaller screens also don’t update with important information and some are just the same image that don’t reflect the right information, so you have to constantly move back and forth.
There’s definitely a lot of ambition with The Rebel Universe, it’s tedious to play.

One critic called him “a cross between Freddy Mercury and Roy Orbison.” Most people know Micky as an actor, director, producer, radio DJ, writer, and singer on most of The Monkees’s hits, but he’s also an inventor and furniture maker. It’s been my honor and privliege (and sometimes learning experience) to work and hang out with Micky and to be part of the 2011 Monkees reunion tour of the UK and US. HB and God bless Micky. Vicky White, assistant director of corrections for the Lauderdale Sheriff's Department, picked up Casey Cole White, 38, from a detention center on Friday morning at 9:30am, armed with a 9mm handgun.
The corrections officer said she was due to take Casey White - who is not related to her - to a mental health evaluation.
But on Friday afternoon, Sheriff Rick Singleton of Lauderdale County said that there was no scheduled mental health evaluation.
Vicky White's car was found abandoned at a shopping center at 3:30pm, and the pair have not been seen since.
'I am extremely, extremely concerned that he is not in custody,' said Chris Connolly, Lauderdale County district attorney - adding that the FBI is assisting with the search, in addition to state and local authorities.
'This is a very dangerous situation.'
It is unclear if White is in any danger, with investigators yet to say whether they think she colluded with White to bust him out of jail, or whether she has fallen victim to an abduction.
Casey White was facing the death penalty for the October 2015 murder of Connie Ridgeway, 58, in her home in Rogersville, Alabama.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It remains unclear why she was killed.
People said she was known for her friendliness and willingness to help others, and the community for many years held a vigil every October in her memory.
Casey White was arrested in December 2015, then aged 32, following a crime spree across Tennessee and Alabama.
In one night, he staged a home invasion, two carjackings and multiple shootings that left a dog dead and a woman injured.
The crimes were followed by a chase, where speeds reached more than 100 miles per hour, WHNT reported.
It ended with a stolen car stuck in a field south of Huntsville, and officers - who were evidently well known to him - pleading with him to put down his gun and give himself up.
White got out of the vehicle with a gun and threatened to shoot officers and himself unless he could speak with Limestone Sheriff Mike Blakely.
Body-cam footage shows deputies attempting to get White to surrender by offering him smokeless tobacco and Sun Drop citrus soda while they waited for Blakely to arrive.
Casey White was found guilty of a total of nine charges, including trying to kill his ex-girlfriend and kidnapping her two roommates. Other charges included first degree robbery, first degree burglary, third degree burglary, breaking and entering a vehicle, animal cruelty for shooting a dog and attempting to elude.
He was sentenced in April 2019 to 75 years in prison.
In June 2020, he wrote to Lauderdale County requesting a meeting with the sheriffs office, and confessed to killing Ridgeway - providing a detailed description of the crime scene.
He said he was paid to kill her, although no motive for hiring a hitman has ever been disclosed.
In October 2020, Casey White, aged 37, appeared in court for an arraignment hearing, and requested to stay at the Lauderdale County Jail instead of going back to prison, WAFF reported.
His request was denied, after authorities said they believed that he was plotting to escape the Lauderdale County Jail.
They had found a makeshift knife, stashed in the showers, and suspected White was intending on using it to force someone to let him out.
'We got information yesterday that he had made a shank and he intended to escape today and take a hostage,' said Connolly, Lauderdale County district attorney, during the hearing.
'Our deputies did a great job.
'Found the shank and eliminated that threat this morning so we obviously aren't equipped to house somebody like that for that long term in our jail, so we are happy that the judge ordered him to go back to the department of corrections.'
White, having confessed, then pleaded not guilty, on grounds of insanity.
