Got so distracted playing minecraft that it's once again, 4 am. The seed of the world I got is so baffling to me, like it's the first time I've seen a seed with so many structures nearby and it's all cuz I put "GIVEMEAGOODSEEDBITCH" (was there a YOU there I forgor) in the seed input.
#aria rants#i have the biomes o' plenty mod for 1.20.1 and ive just been hopping world to world looking for a nice seed#thatd at least show me some of the structures from the graveyard mod i have installed without me using the /locate command#and that world did. in fact its so crazy i spawned right in front of the haunted house and had to immediately put peaceful on#my face was: 😦 when i spawned in cuz like-- ''the audacity of this seed to spawn me right at the monsters mouth''#and turns out that was just the beginning. the spawn was in the minecraft swamp biome and there were HIPPOS (from another mod)#nearby and like-- EVERYWHERE IS WATER those hippos turn aggressive when you step foot in water AND THEN i looked around#there was a tiny blue mushroom grave nearby. and then off to the distance i can see some houses. turns out it was a village--#with a HUGE MUSHROOM from graveyard mod that spawned right in the middle of it AND THEN when i went to explore#via creative mode just flying aimlessly-- i found a medium graveyard farther away (which i looted) and when i flew#some more i found ANOTHER haunted house with an abandoned portal and a VILLAGE nearby again and then you walk some#blocks away theres a washed up nearly fully intact shipwreck and it had a treasure map with the treasure NEARBY#and i was like: okay. wtf. so i tried to find my way back home and found out that it was actually CLOSE BY so i wanted to see#if i can find my way back there again and somehow found ANOTHER haunted house nearby and that haunted house#was near TWO MORE BIG structures from graveyard mod. the seed was insane. minecraft heard me and actually gave me a good one

Man. The Herobrine really is summat else. We got:
A glitch of a ghost in the machine that causes every error in the game
The White Eyes character, stemming from a texture error, which becomes associated with the cave noise & eventually leads to the creation of the Herobrine myth
Transgender swag
The fucken. Brocraft stream that links to that ONE image & implies that either you or Herobrine are "asleep" & dreaming
The way that Herobrine myths kicked up due to the TF2 influx, after the devs made mention of the game
Every single unexplained structure in the game, all abandoned, all without a clear group that created them can & will be associated with Herobrine
The mineshafts. The ruined portals. The deep dark. It's kind of like a story, told in three arcs, if you squint right
Like something that used to live there, toiled in the soil along with the worms
Like something that got locked away, that wants to go back
Like something that needs to be kept out
Every single zombie looks like Steve. Does that say anything? Does it imply something about Herobrine, another reflection, but maybe a bit more sentient? With teeth that are a bit more sharp, with a malice that is a bit more cold?
Mojang putting the "Removed Herobrine" note in for YEARS, then one day dropping it, only to bring it back 3 years later
N*tch being scrubbed from the game's lore, so he's also (sometimes) scrubbed from Herobrine's lore, leading to alternate origins
He is the first player. He is the ghost of a fellow player. He is an architect, a miner, a builder. He is a friend to all the mobs, & an enemy to those that take all the trees & never replant the saplings. He is a curious onlooker, probably harmless. He is a deep loathing. He is a danger, a legend, just a myth, but is he?
The way that people's opinions of Herobrine have shifted through years, like a litmus test for Minecraft players as a whole
It starts with the eerie feeling of being in a room you KNOW should be empty, but feeling eyes on you, anyways & ends with a sad type of goodbye, a dreamer seeking a dreamer condemned
The way he's more quiet, more calm, less prone to the griefing & attacks he was once known for, like his fire has cooled with time
The Minecraft end poem. Maybe. Do you think Herobrine ever got to hear those words? "I love you," & "You have played the game well"?
The person with the Herobrine username, which has had the catboy Herobrine skin on for years o7

bro i was playing a cool special version of pokemon in my dreams where you always get a “pokemon with high perfection” to start off with and then you gotta go and catch the rest of your team but sometimes hostiles will chase you and if you lose to them you die and have to start the run over

The Artificial Structures of Minecraft: An Attempted Chronology
Artificial structures in Minecraft range from the modern to the ancient. What structures are newer and which are older? It's hard to say. But here are my thoughts:
Modern - These structures are in use and new ones are likely being actively created
Villages: Actively inhabited by villagers
Woodland mansions: Actively inhabited by illagers
Pillager outposts: Actively inhabited by pillagers
Witch huts: Actively inhabited by witches
Igloos: No indication of owners, but the captive villager is still alive
Player-made structures: Self-explanatory
*Abandoned villages: Not actively in use, but new ones are likely being created
Recent - Not known to be in use, but have few signs of decay or geological changes
Abandoned villages: Explained above
Mineshafts: No signs of decay, despite wooden structures decaying easily
Desert wells: Cannot be proved to be in use, but have no signs of decay
Ocean monuments: No signs of decay, built after change in water levels (ref. ocean ruins)
End cities: No signs of decay, though in the end this may be hard to determine
*Shipwrecks: Some shipwrecks have few signs of decay or burial, indicating they are likely recent, especially given how fast wood can decay in water
*Ancient city illager structures: Structures in ancient cities made of dark oak wood and blue wool, appearing to be made by illagers. Illagers are active in the world, so it is likely that the structures are recent
Old - Structure shows signs of overgrowth or being partially buried, but no significant structural decay or changes in local geography
Jungle temples: Overgrown but structure and redstone intact
Desert pyramids: May be buried, and the secret room is entirely buried, but they are still near the surface and show little signs of decay
Dungeons/monster rooms: Cobblestone is overgrown bu structure is otherwise intact
*Shipwrecks: More decayed or buried shipwrecks likely belong in this category
Decayed - Structure has decayed or been damaged, but intact segments maintain integrity. Unclear if these are actually older than the previous category or if they were simply more prone to damage due to being larger
Strongholds: Have some cracked and overgrown bricks, and structures may have gaps. However, other than the gaps, rooms retain their shape and may even contain intact furnishings
Nether fortresses: Some bridges may be broken, but the rest of the structures have no obvious rubble or even cracks
Ancient - Structure is entirely decayed. Massive structural damage. Indications of geographic shifts since construction
Bastion remnants: Despite active habitation, they are in ruins. Some parts of the structures resemble natural caves more than artificial construction
Ruined portals: Wrecked and broken structures, often buried or flooded. Crying obsidian appears to be in an advanced stage of decay
Ancient cities: A majority of structures are in ruins. It is unclear if cities are supposed to be buried deep underground with little to no connection to the surface
Ocean ruins: In ruins. Some contain eggs of extinct animals. Evidently built before a sea level rise
Trail ruins: Likely the oldest artificial structures in the game. Almost entirely buried, with no structural integrity remaining
Conclusions:
Piglin civilization was ancient. Considering how ruined bastion remnants are, in comparison with nether fortresses, it seems unlikely that they competed with the fortress builders at the height of their civilization. It is likely that the fortress builders arrived in the nether only after the piglins had regressed to tribalism. If we assume Minecraft Legends to be canon, this likely means that fortresses (and strongholds, by extension) did not exist in the time period of Minecraft Legends
The advanced decay of ruined portals seems to indicate their extreme antiquity. Combined with their peculiar generation (generating nether terrain in the overworld, but not vice-versa) it seems likely that they are also from the Minecraft Legends time period - this makes a great deal of sense in my opinion, considering how they work in that game
Trail ruins indicate that villager civilization is likely just as old, if not older, than piglin civilization. This is consistent with Minecraft Legends, but the difference in architecture indicates that villagers may have been responsible for a lot of different kinds of structures
Nether fortresses and strongholds have similar levels of decay, indicating they may be from the same time period. This makes sense considering the ender eye crafting recipe
It is likely that the treasure maps in shipwrecks were obtained from ocean ruins
Igloos are likely owned by illagers
Abandoned mineshafts were likely made by villagers - badlands mineshafts may have been made by illagers, as they share their wood type with other illager structures
It is likely that the magic of totems of undying is related to the magic of golden apples. They have similar colours, illagers are the most likely to be responsible for igloos (where they experiment with golden apples and reversing death), they likely have mineshafts in badlands (where they find lots of gold), and they seem to have an interest in ancient cities (the best place in the game to find enchanted golden apples)

i want a minecraft mod that's like. randomly generated abandoned structures of a modern-to-futuristic society. like. adventure time style. imagine mining in some indistinct plains and dropping into a ruined, kilometers long hadron collider. half buried factory districts stretching across deserts. concrete bridges for high speed trains stretching off forever, stopping in cities that have long since been wiped off the face of the world. diving into a cenote just to find a submerged subway station, waterlogged tunnels stretching off into the darkness or blocked by the rusting hulks of trains. you won't be able to find any hints of what happened, being left to wander through the old machinery of the past. maybe putting it to good use if you can repair it

So I've heard rumors about a minecraft movie with Jason Momoa for a long fucking time. But I feel like if it isn't just a 140 minute film with no dialog showing the beauties of nature and the true fear of spelunking in an unknown, untouched world, it will be an absolute flop no matter how hard they try to market it.
I want the film to cold open on Jason face first in the dirt, near a beach, stalks of sugarcane waving in the wind. He slowly realizes he can break trees with his bare hands and DIY his way to survival. I want him to move deeper into a cave day after day, and then after months of fighting creepers and skeletons he finds an abandoned structure. A dungeon.
Week after week he studies the books inside by torchlight, discovering an ancient portal. It drives him to be a midnight monster killing machine, searching for the materials to complete it. And then once he does, he fights and kills the ender dragon.
Not a word spoken, just over 2 hours of human muscle slab Momoa surviving and exploring with gorgeous sound effects and orchestrated synth music.

/dsmp /rp tw for mentions of violence, death, war, medical details
the various skills of philza minecraft and where he learned them.  a collection of the half-lost memories of an immortal.
basic medical procedures.  he was around 350 years old when he stumbled to the doorstep of a village doctor.  a polite, patient woman who wore shawls and long dresses.  she wrapped his wounds, gave him tea, and they hit off well enough that philza spent the next 5 years with her.  he watched her operate on soldiers, on children, on mothers and fathers.  he learned how to amputate a limb after a pre-teen boy crushed his hand during a cave exploration, and while he lay half-conscious and drunk on pain pills, his remaining hand grasped philza’s sleeve.  “how do you keep from falling in love?” he asks the doctor.  “i don’t,” she replies, “i just let it happen.”
(her home is targeted by a clever army.  if you take down the doctor, you eliminate the chance of recovery.  philza uses what he learned to try to save her-- tourniquets, cpr-- but it isn’t enough.)
herbal mixes.  he spent around 80 years with a commune deep in the mountains-- a collection of folks who needed a home and found it within one another.  they built beautiful structures and gardens where they grew herbs to mix into teas and pipes.  he outlives all of them and their children.
carpentry.  his foggiest, most distant memories take place on a farm.  he’s a clumsy young boy following his father around, holding candles for him while he worked, learning about different woodworking terms.  years and years have passed, and he can no longer remember his father’s face or name, but he’s kept many of the lessons.
flying.  everyone has to start somewhere.  phil trained with an old elytrian-- a man who has taught many, many children over his years.  when phil first approached, the man thought he was another hunter seeking to slice his wings from his back and sell them, as humans often did, but philza showed him how his wings were attached to his back and explained that they were a gift from death herself.  the elytrian’s training methods were harsh.  birds drop their children from the nest to teach them, and similarly, philza found himself tossed into the void with no option but to save himself.  his lack of other bird-like features made things interesting.  With no tail to steer or talons to grasp a perch, the old mentor had to adjust his ways when he worked with phil.  they stayed together for 20 years before the elytrian left him, as he did with all his children before.
handling panic attacks.  after a village is burned to the ground, the survivors ran away together and tried to restart.  philza joined them for a while.  many of the villagers break down into tears and tremors, barely breathing between sobs, and phil watches a young mother help them.  she coos, she traces fingertips along their skin, she whispers compliments and affirmations and confident declarations that they’ll be safe.  an earthquake destroys their efforts, and as a little boy suffocates under the ruins of his new home, philza talks to him.  coos.  traces fingertips along his skin.  whispers to him, with confidence, that he will be okay.
playing guitar.  he travels, briefly, with a warden hybrid.  being born in darkness and sculk, the hybrid has an easier time navigating cave systems than the airborne philza, so phil elects his help when he makes a journey underground.  the man is blind, and he uses music as a way to pass the time.  phil can only play basic chords, but it’s enough to help him teach his son later on.  philza doesn’t realize the man has died until he visits his home many years later to ask for his aide again, only to find the structure long abandoned.
braiding hair.  a talkative young woman at a market stall offered to teach him, insistent that he’d look lovely if he tied his long hair back.  he only wanted to buy some wool off of her, but he left with a new skill, a blush on his face from all the compliments she gave, and a discount on the wool.
(he tells kristin later, and she laughs and laughs and laughs)
leatherworking.  he pays a woman very handsomely to teach him.  she has strong, muscular arms and eyes that tear through him, and she isn’t patient with his mistakes.  her voice, heavily accented and deep, is frightening when she raises it, but philza enjoys her company regardless.  he’s been spending many years alone, and her commanding presence is a stark contrast to the silence he’s been enduring.  he likes finding ways to make her laugh.  when he returns later, hoping to ask her about a saddle he’s struggling with, he finds the shop flooded and destroyed, no owner in sight.
there’s a nerve in the spine that, if sliced, can turn the strongest of men into drooling vegetables.  philza cut it once, reducing a bloodthirsty warlord to a mindless lump of flesh within a heartbeat.  phil doesn’t talk about it, but he was 22 years old at the time, and although thousands of years have passed he still remembers the emptiness in that warlord’s eyes.  he scared himself.  he felt more aware of the consequences of brutality, of the frailty of the human body, of what vengeance can lead to.
(who could ever deserve this?  for all that he’s done, is this justice?)
archery.  escaping the violence (and the demands for his head), philza spends some time in the nether.  befriending the piglins comes easily, and they don’t really care about his past.  they do, however, care very much about how small he is.  his bones snap easily, a shove from one of their shields can toss him across a field.  they insist that he learns more long-distance techniques, and he undertakes archery.  he masters it, and he lies in wait until the overworld forgets him.
horseback riding.  he learned this from technoblade.  having lost his ability to fly, he needed new ways to travel quickly, and horses were a good option.  sitting atop a horse felt like a defeat, like a loss, like a demotion from the angel of death that he’s been for centuries, but techno taught him with a smile.
playing patty-cake.  he’s walking through a distant village when a boy, no older than 5 years old, takes a fistful of phil’s feathers.  the child is wandering alone, and when phil asks him where his parents are, he answers with questions of his own.  why do you have wings, mister?  why are you wearing a hat?  phil takes him by the hand and leads him to the side of the road, away from the horses and travelers.  the boy doesn’t seem frightened, which could be a good sign, and phil sticks around in hopes that his parents will show.  he pretends not to know how to play patty-cake as the boy teaches him.  he messes it up in exaggerated, humorous ways (smacking himself in the face, using a foot instead of a hand) to make him laugh.  when his mother returns to retrieve him, her face a deep red, he tells her that she has a most lovely son.
(philza would say that patty-cake is one of his most important skills.  and blowing raspberries on a baby’s stomach, and planting rapid-fire kisses on a toddler’s cheek until she squeals and blushes.  how do you keep from falling in love?)

Something about abandoned Minecraft worlds, worlds marred by combat that just.... I don't know. The most beautiful Minecraft builds will still never evoke as strong of an emotion to me as seeing a half destroyed cobblestone wall, or a high one block tower which changes materials several times through, with a pool of water at the bottom. It tells a story. It's ugly but they're also ghosts of what happened there.
Idk sometimes I think of limlife and how objectively fucking ugly it is but then how at the same time it is the life map that most closely resembles a battlefield. And how fitting that the vast majority of structures on that map were made specifically for offense, for it to be littered with sky passages made of cobblestone for the sole purpose of dropping tnt, and little bunkers high up, as high as they can to protect themselves from aforementioned dropping tnt. The map littered with holes from explosions. The burned then drowned, utterly destroyed woodland mansion. The sprawling bread bridge. Idk I'm being silly and insane and all but man idk how fitting that the season with the most deaths, with the most violence, is the season with the ugliest world. I hope one day someone recreates it. Third life and last life worlds' feel like abandoned, once beautiful kingdoms, marred by war. But limlife's is another category of its own.

Might as well work on some minecraft mob concept art I decided The first one, the "Sea Puppy" may look like nightmare fuel, but is actually a very docile creature found in Minecraft's deep oceans, near hydrothermal vents. Much like the yeti crab (rip mob vote) they collect bateria from the vents to use as food, using tiny hairs on the inside of their mouth. On the other side is the "Blotted Beast," found in old abandoned structures deep in the caves below. This boss mob has an eldritch eye overseeing its existence, which really helps considering it doesnt have eyes. This thing spits acid and can spit little larval versions of itself out in an attempt to assimilate the world around it into itself for whichever Old god is obeys. I really just like coming up with mobs to worldbuild and stuff, I just think its pretty neat

Notes abt Piglin Culture
Hello!! Back again with another post about Piglins and their culture!! These are all headcanons of course and while some are based off the lore in-game, some are def based off my own ideas!!
I do wanna say Piglin culture is something I like to insert my own culture into, so be aware some things might be influenced by Aztecan and Mexican culture as well as Salvadorian. Usually these won't be too impactful, but I am speaking from my own experiences. I also want to state we'll be delving into a bit of lore from Minecraft Legends!! And happy holidays and merry christmas to my fellas out there! I'll try to post more soon, I have a theory/headcanon on Drowned I wanna show off here!!
this is a long post so yeah :0)
Firstly,
I wanted to touch one some small notes about the jobs Piglin culture has, as well as what they do for their community. I'm certain it's very clear their people are attached very heavily to each other, all raising children together, fighting, harvesting, protecting and living as one unit. I think Bastions represent a lot of different needs their people used to have in the days of old, namely the time of Minecraft Legends. The 4 Piglin leaders put into place their values into the Bastion structures. The Unbreakable implemented the Bastion system in the first place!! They were the one who first had the idea of Treasure Bastions, as a way to keep their history and treasures secure no matter what would happen. The Devourer designed the Housing Units, The Beast created the Hoglin Stables, and lastly, The Great Hog developed the Bridge Units. With these different units, different Piglins are required to choose a job and serve their community once they reach the age of 20. These jobs are Protectors, Nether-Roaming, and Bastion Dwellers.
Bastion-Dwelling piglins are ones that work preparing food, creating bricks for repairs, making beds and linen from stem trees, and creating music and clothes. They also take care of the elderly and children, usually are very social and polite. This job is usually for Piglins who aren't able to fight/don't know how, have disabilities that might make constant movement difficult, have children, or are generally more interested in this kind of work. It is slightly lighter work, though it is constant and takes a lot of effort to complete. (this is what Briar worked as due to his overgrown tail and ears as well as his physical hypo sensitivity due to his autism, also hes good with medicine lol)
Nether-Roaming works as scavengers, collecting bones, quartz, gold, blackstone and netherrack. As well as raiding any older chests around Ruined Portals and abandoned Bastions/Fortresses. Next are hunters who will kill magma cubes for medicines and potions as well as hoglins for meat and hides. Another job is Messagers. They will also communicate between Bastions, sending messages and pushing to form alliances.
Lastly are Protectors! Protectors are trained from a very young age (15 or so) to be ready for this kind of work. Protectors train in combat and mental fortitude especially. They are given a strict amount of rules to live by and support, are taught to not fear zombification and zombies. Protectors are needed to protect and secure any and all treasures inside of Bastions as well as all the Piglins who live inside of it!!
Another thing i wanted to mention briefly is the importance of gold and how its used to show a kinship within their culture.
Piglins usually have at least 2-4 different piercings on their body. Most keep to 2 piercings though. The most common are nose and ear piercings, as they're the easiest to care for. But!! It is normal to have them in a variety of other places and to have multiple in the same place!! (Dagger has two gauges in both ears.) Tail, nipple, belly button, eyebrows, lip and a variety of eyebrow n mouth related piercings.
Piercings are done by heating a quartz rod and poking it into the cartilage around where the piercing is meant to be placed. after the incision is done, a golden hoop, clip or small stud is placed within it. It is left to heal and is cleaned consistently with a mixture of water and magma cream. The piercing is always entirely golden and is always kept for the rest of their lives.
One piercing is done when the piglet is born, and another when they are an adult (20). The more piercings a Piglin has, the more revered and attractive they are seen as!! In general though, height, strength and overall size are attractive traits among piglins, as well as curlier/patterned hair/fur! (yes this means canonically Dagger is attractive but i think it's funnier that Briar is very much unattractive)
I also want to say i believe Piglins have a dormant winter gene in their DNA, back when their ancestors lived in a frozen tundra or the prehistoric Nether. (yes this is an idea presented by MatPat, but also its common sense with irl geography and history) This gene only comes up with Piglins who have moved to the Overworld.
Lastly, I will talk about how Piglins are perceived in the Overworld. The legend presented in Minecraft Legends is very much what V/Illager folk believe about the Piglin race. Brutish, disgusting, unappealing and violent. They usually look down on them and have no intentions of going to the Nether to actually see if these things are true. V/Illagers despise Piglins usually, though some don't see them as a threat as these prejudices spawn from old stories. Even so, the disdain is seen in how Villagers have their Iron Golems attack Piglins on sight. In the current story, most V/Illagers care not for Piglins, though some are of course hesitant around them. Unfortunately, this isn't much better as there are some V/Illagers who only like Dagger n Briar n such bc they see them as 'exotic', 'feisty' and 'cutesy' so :/ but its just part of being in a new place where people misinterpret you and your culture

Tell us about beowulf
BEOWULF!!!!!!!! get ready for a long post I could write 500 page essays on this man I love him so much <3
So to talk about Beowulf I'm also going to have to talk a little bit about my take on the illagers, and how the cult is structured in my interpretation of the lore.
Beowulf is from the Minecraft: Dungeons timeline, which I interpret as being retroactive to the base game (that doesn't really matter, though, I feel like I could squeeze him into any timeline, as his story is kinda isolated, for lack of a better word.)
He was born and raised until the age of 14 in a mansion to the far, far north, in the tundra. Instead of being located in the dark forest, the mansion is located in the ice spikes. The region is simply regarded as The North/Northern Territory, the illagers within that mansion "own" everything that the snow and ice touches throughout the (very large) region.
While his family was, for the most part, non-magical, they had a powerful rank within their cult sect, and were essentially the right-hand men to the leader of said sect. What his family lacked in magical skill, they had in military might.
As a result, Beowulf grew up privileged compared to other illagers. Unlike most others, he had access to an education (an abysmal education, but an education nonetheless), fresh(er) food, and a somewhat comfortable bed to sleep in at night.
Despite these advantages, he was still heavily mistreated by those around him, both by peers and by people in positions of power.
He has always been considered a bit of a black sheep within his family. While he was never necessarily a "bad" kid, as a child he never seemed to have much interest in continuing on the family legacy (pillaging, terrorizing the innocent) and would struggle with following the direction of his mother and father.
At 14, his father would have him enlisted in their cult sect's pillager army, believing it would correct his son's "odd" behaviors [and, because of their family's status and notoriety, he would be expected to enlist at some point anyway. (Note: Beowulf has multiple developmental and learning disabilities; such as autism, ADHD, severe dyslexia and dyscalculia.)]
He would spend the next 16 years of his life stationed at outposts located all across the tundra, rarely visiting home.
At 30 he would be stationed at Whistling Peaks, a possibly haunted mountain-top outpost that had been previously abandoned for the past 70 years.
Shortly after the arrival of the pillagers, a weeks-long blizzard hit the tundra, locking the already severely under prepared platoon inside of their outpost. Threats of starvation, freezing to death, and cannibalism became very likely possibilities.
Eventually, though, the blizzard would end and the clouds would part. The clearing of the snow revealed a village down, deep in the valley below the outpost.
Desperate for resources and food, a group of pillagers would head into the valley to beg from the villagers. Hesitant, the villagers would agree to share... as long as the platoon agreed to their conditions.
The pillagers were now tasked with keeping the village safe. They were not allowed to loot or destroy, must do night patrols, and drive any unwanted mobs or players out of the area.
Beowulf is of the pillagers who were put into town to do night patrols.
Slowly, the villagers and illagers would start to mingle together, the barriers that separated them had begun to break down.
Prior to their assigned night patrols, Beowulf and his group would often head into a local tavern for food and drinks. There he would meet Lucrezia, the head barmaid and general manager of the tavern. He was immediately head over heels for her.
Meanwhile, she barely acknowledged him.
Eventually, through his very awkward attempts at flirting and getting to know her, Lucrezia would acknowledge him. They would begin talking and become friends; Beowulf would walk her home every night after her shift at the tavern.

Hey friend, I am absolutely rotating the HECK out of Hunger AU rn. I just binged all of the tagged posts and I'm going FERAL! Watchers being like parasitic wasps? Listeners being like fungi? Absolutely based takes.
I'm very much a fan of the emotional realism going on and I'm so terrified of Angry!Mumbo. Like. Bro doesn't get all that angry that often those folks are the scariest properly pissed.
And I relate far too much to the Search Party tbh. Something about the themes of mental and physical illness, wanting to help but not knowing how, the one you want to help not wanting help at this point, the resentment that causes on both sides of that stalemate... yeah I've been there.
Also, I am insanely curious about the ecological niche that Watchers and Listeners fulfill. Like. There has to be a reason they are the way they are. I'm insanely curious about what the environment they evolved in looked like, and even more curious as to what they provide back to the universe in return.
Like. Irl most wasps are predatory insects, controlling the population of pests and invasive species, but the tidbits you've given us about how they feed on emotions and the groups they feed on put me more in mind of, like, herding dogs. Yknow? Does that make sense? Gathering players together and moving them away from half abandoned worlds to let them dissolve back into the greater code. Maybe interviening in virus-infected worlds or virus-vulrable worlds, encouraging those players to move or perish.
And Listeners, well, fungi occupy so many diverse niches they could do just about anything, really. It's very fun to think about and I am rotating them vigorously, thank you for feeding us so well <3
(May I be 🐸 anon?)
This is such a sweet ask i am so 🥺🥺🥺🥺 abt it, im really pleased that you're enjoying the emotional realism ive committed to for this fic, because thats just such an important aspect for me-- my goal here is to depict a deeply emotional, moving, and messy situation about illness and recovery where no one's feelings are punished or demonized by the narrative. Its just so, so important to me that the Search Party (and later on, the other hermits) get their emotions properly respected and explored. Its not just about Grian, even if he is the ultimate focus-- everyone else deserves varied, emotional responses to an ugly and terrifying situation where theres hurt on all sides. This is the kind of realism i love putting in all of my writing, and the kind of justice i want to do for all characters in stories like these!!
Its a little funny how this au originally started with me brainrotting absently about Watcher biology because i wanted to explore the idea of Grian pretending to be an avian and finding certain aspects of it deeply uncomfortable. And then it just. Snowballed into this!! And now i am chewing on worldbuilding for breakfast DKXNSJDJ im really glad you enjoy the Watchers and Listeners lore!!! I need to make a proper post on Devs (or dev crystals, as theyre actually called), as well as general code structure, bc they are both so fucking cool as well
I absolutely love your herding dog analogy, and its giving me some great ideas because for the longest time i couldnt quite figure out what exactly a Watcher's ecological niche was beyond predator to Players and prey for something else that's extinct. But now im really looking at the connection between Watchers feeding habits and Players' biological need for play (or dreams, if you want to get into the minecraft end poem of it all), and theres something there that i really wanna take some time to tease out before i give a concrete answer. I need to update my hunger au masterlist LOL i am saur behind 😭
Anyway this was such a lovely ask to sink my teeth into!!!! Thank you so much for sending it, and ofc you can be frog anon!!! This was a really stimulating conversation for me so thank you again for getting my brain whirring :D i hope to see you in the inbox again!!
