Commentary on the Beach comic
Here is the commentary post. However, I may explore this theme again because I want to tell cute beach scenarios, especially one with Deep Cut as a group being old farts even though they are in their 20s... That's what happens after college. After you graduate, one hot summer day after leaving the gym, you reminisce.   FYI: This is long AF. Also mention of colorism and misogyny at the final thoughts section.
Background:
As I mentioned, this fan comic was unexpected but had a purpose. I did not want to jump into the folk song fan comic until I ironed out the few doubts in my mind:
Which desi river folk songs do I want to use to tell this story? What would be the theme? What would Frye and Shiver wear? What would each of their hairstyles be? Location? Location? Location?
The body proportions between the two were also in doubt. So I took the opportunity of this being a learning experience.
It is difficult not to beeline and draw it when I cannot stop playing the scene in my head whenever I listen to the songs. I HAVE to let this story simmer. I know it won't be perfect, but I want to tell it right.
Set-up:
Initially, the comic starts with Frye bringing in the watermelon for the rest of the crew. However, the delivery falls flat since we know about Frye's antics.
Plus, as much as I love the yellow desi-inspired inkling, I want to give equal attention to the other two. The most difficult one to draw is SHIVER. I see too much myself in them, let alone the chubby square face shape with sharp eyes. Whenever I indulged in fanfic, I would react like, "oh noooo. What is up with these sudden attacks? I just want to read a cute story and not be CALLED OUT LIKE THIS." The game makes it worse, tho.
Anyway. I have trouble drawing Shiver and Big Man (easier than Shiver) and have yet to write a comic where the two would interact. The two are the comedy duo in this story, while Frye has no intention besides munching on some grub. Mood.
Design:
I wanted to approach this fan comic as lazy as possible, but it can't be helped. An overachiever perfectionist is in my bone. I'm already exhausted from designing a college mascot as my day job. I didn't feel like using my brain.
And yet, I drew details onto their swimwear. *cries*
I had been referencing writers' works in each of my artworks. For example, Shiver and Frye as gaymers. Multiple fanfics had them adorably playing video games together. Another example is The Big Comfy Couch. There are numerous fanfics where they would have Adult Fun Time on a couch, whether in the dressing room or at home, as if it were part of a mythos. Some fluff moments are on the sofa, but Adult Fun Time outweighs them. I'm not complaining! It is rather amusing.
Me: *Slaps an arm of The Big Comfy Couch* "This bad boy can support so many adult fun-time sofa scene fanfics on it. It's a staple!"
This time, I referenced the swimwear from chapter 6 of Girlfriends by IslandsChickenScratch, the mahi mahi resort scene. The foundation because, as I stated, I went on adding the details and the add-ons... Thank goodness these characters don't have mammal-like hair, or else I would spend days drawing each strain.
I'll talk about the least to the most troublesome I had when designing the swimwear.
Shiver:
The most challenging character to render yet the easiest to give them an outfit. The cool n chic masc energy, let's goooooo.
The foundations for them were swim shorts and a strapless bikini top. As well as the back tentacle pinned up. I added the bottom bikini or a g-string to emphasize their hips. They enjoy flaunting their hips. Also, it gives off that cutout design of their default pants without the actual cutout.
The design of the swimshorts is a combination of the "Chili Octo Aloha" button-down shirt with S3 sunken scroll ten sharks:
Tumblr media
I also added the orange gills on the top bikini to break the solid blue. Before, I had flora patterns in mind, but then I remembered that I loved seeing other illustrators draw Shiver with scars. It truly embodies the shark-like energy—one true blahaj.
Gosh, I am so envious of their chest size. Sure, mine has gotten smaller thanks to the gym, where sometimes I see them as pecs. But dammit, it would be great not to deal with sports bras. *grumbles* Oh well, on the brighter side, they did get smaller. So, I'm happy with the result, lol.
Lastly, I added the octopus medallion??? Pendant onto the kanzashi but with no additional frills. Simple, the better.
Tumblr media
I love seeing other fan creators incorporate those pendants with different outfits.
Big Man:
You would think drawing a triangular, ideal Doritio body would be easy. Nope. Not at all. Not one bit. The struggle is real. But I give my best.
His base swimwear was the diving mask with a snorkel. I opt out of the snorkel because… I was too lazy to draw it lol—also, the war flashback of drawing the slopsuit helmet on him. I can't.
However, after taking away the snorkel, he felt so naked. I know he's a nudist. Big man the truest punk who doesn't conform to societal norms. I fold it instead.
I added the garland, adored with Brazilian flowers. It looks adorable on him! It is not a lei. I'm connecting it to a queer animatic story that I came across on youtube, "Pritty" by Pritty Not Pretty. Queer black boys love story by the poolside. It is so cute that I watched it three times. I can't wait for the animation.
I've seen some fan creators depict humanoid Big Man with Afrocentric features. I ain't that creative, and I don't want to draw a humanoid version of him. He's a blessing because, sometimes, I don't wanna draw LIMBS. He is a nice break. Delta.
Despise the lack of ears; a necklace is always a great choice because he's pritty cute. *Frye's finger guns*
Frye:
She's the opposite of Shiver when it comes to drawing. She's more freeing thanks to her personality, but the damn outfits tho. The problem is that she can wear anything.
She wore a one-piece bikini with cutouts in that scene. So, I combed through a folder of old references I gathered I had saved for my project. I found this orange one-piece bikini with a sarong and sunhat. Sure, it is a more mature look, but it is hot. Hot cute. The sunhat adds the cute factor. Subjective, I guess.
Similar to Shiver, I placed her pendant on the hat.
Tumblr media
I added additional jewelry because the girl is at the beach, and of course, there are some desi songs associated with the anklet, nupur paye, to a stream.
Tumblr media
Unlike the gold bands where she wore one on each arm and wrist, I only drew one anklet. I connected to a Bangla pop song, "Ek paye nupur amar," by Anila and Topu. Gosh, the music video is so dated and awkward, but basically, the song talks about the two options of a relationship. Would you rather deepen the connection and jump on the ship with them or have it severed?
I signify that Shiver will always choose the anklet, the one by the sea. Although the sea can be unpredictable with it's rough waves and storms, they would happily take Frye to the next level, and Frye would happily agree to it.
Yes, this comically fan-comic was kinda deep lol.
*cries* Why can't I just draw Frye crushing a melon... Then have gay brain goes "brrr me totes gay." "OTL
Final Thoughts:
Whew, this commentary is getting pretty long. I learned a few things when it comes to coloring the environment. I hate being a colorist. It gave me a migraine for a few days. So, I'll do flat colors for the folk songs fan-comic except for the bonus part.
It will be a doujinshi length worth. Ohmigawd, my first one ever?! All this effort is going for a certain gay yellow desi-inspired squid? Yes. Why?
I could not abide watching from the sideline as I looked and read comments about Frye. Have her music be reduced to just "Bollywood" music. Look, I do listen to old movie songs, and I do enjoy them, but there are other genres...
And also, sigh. The blatant misogynoir. As an observer who witnesses colorism and misogyny close, approximately within and outside the family. I had to step in. It hurts knowing it hits close to home.
Me as Marie in January 2023:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"...I guess I'll step in. I don't wanna work. I just climbed out of the rabbit hole, battling my two years of depression, but as a light-skin desi with whatever art skills I gained over years, it is my responsibility to do something about this. I am a bottom feeder of an artist but, I DO have that privilege. SIGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh."
It does feel cathartic whenever I happen to draw Frye pretty. I usually announced it to my younger sister afterward, who always replied without a hitch, "Thank you."
It is a small step but a worthwhile endeavor. The duty of an older sister.
I'll continue to draw a small fan piece or two while working on the long-ass folk song fan comic. I want to finish the new fan comic before I go to Bangladesh in November.

Hi Robin Buckley enjoyers, if you care about Robin Buckley's music taste this very niche post is for you! Your local former band kid and music extraordinaire (me) is here. This is long.
All information on Robin's music taste was given by Maya Hawke. And before you argue that "Actors don't affect what is canon," Okay well Maya does. The costume department let her take home Robin's converse in season 3 (which she wears in every episode) and write whatever she wanted on them. Because of Maya Hawke, Robin's sneakers canonically have "I won't go down in history but I'll go down on your sister," and "TIDDIEZ" written on them. Checkmate.
So for our musical headcanon purposes we are going to take everything Maya says as canon.
I know that in season four Robin has the line, "Madonna, Blondie, Bowie, Beatles, music, we need music!" while she's sorting through Eddie's tapes as Nancy is getting vecna'd. But I believe she's just naming very popular artists hoping it will be a song Nancy would like. So I haven't taken this line into consideration for our purposes. (Though we do know from this interaction that Robin definitely is not a metalhead.)
According to Maya Hawke, this would be Robin's music taste:
Tumblr media
I whole-heartedly agree with her take on this, all four artists. This is just correct. And as I said, canon.
But what would Robin's favorite artist be, and what's her favorite song?
So glad you asked because I'm about to tell you!
Maya Hawke said in an interview that Robin would have the same music taste she does, because they are very similar. (More on this later)
If Robin's music taste is Maya's music taste, then it stands to reason that her favorite music would be most similar to Maya Hawke's own music.
In my opinion (which is correct because I know more about this than you so shut up) out of these four artists, based on overall lyricism, lyrical themes, musical themes, and vibes, the artist most similar to Maya Hawke is unarguably: Patti Smith.
But what is Robin's favorite song?
People Have the Power by Patti Smith! (Released in 1988, but go with it!)
Two reasons for this: it is one of the most similar to Maya's music lyrically and vibe-wise, and the lyrics would undoubtedly resonate with Robin.
Tumblr media
If you're at all familiar with Maya's music you can see the similarities in lyrical themes: use of multiple metaphors, use of imagery, overarching social commentary.
I won't go too much into why the lyrics would resonate with Robin but I will say that the Robin who spit in the face of a Russian general and mocked him would resonate with a song about people having the power rather than the government having the power. Also the fact that she and the rest of the main characters keep having to save the world rather than the U.S. government who got them into this Upside Down mess in the first place. And lastly, I think this song is a powerful song for anyone who feels powerless, like for example a lesbian in small town Indiana in the 80s. Or just a teenage girl in general.
Okay NOW let's talk modern day music because it's fun.
If you write modern Day AUs that include Robin you're legally required to read this:
In the same interview that Maya said Robin would have the taste she does, she specifically mentioned Phoebe Bridgers.
When asked about Robin's music taste on the red carpet at the Stranger Things premier, Maya Hawke again said that Robin would like the same music she likes and mentioned MUNA, Phoebe Bridgers, Charli XCX, Samia, and Christian Lee Hutson.
Another good take btw.
So what would be Robin's favorite modern day song?
If we're not allowing Maya Hawke to exist in our AU because that's too meta, I'd stick with Phoebe Bridgers as her favorite artist because she's mentioned her multiple times when asked this question and in the first interview Phoebe is the only artist that she mentioned.
So assuming Phoebe is her favorite artist and her taste in music is as close to Maya Hawke as we can get, then I can confidently say that modern day Robin's favorite song is:
Graceland Too by Phoebe Bridgers
(Source: I have listened to every Phoebe Bridgers and Maya Hawke song more times than any reasonable person should and this is the most similar. I wont waste your time breaking down why.)
Robin would also resonate with the lyrics:
Tumblr media
To her it would represent the thought of getting out of Hawkins one day (or already having gotten out of Hawkins), as well as the isolation that comes with being a lesbian in the 80s or even just being unpopular in high school. Also her neurodivergency (I hc her with ADHD because I have that and she is just like me fr but autistic Robin truthers you are so valid and honestly there's probably more canonical evidence for that). And lastly the idea that she would "do anything" for someone refers to both how selfless of a person we know she is but also the fact that she falls hard for people, we see that with Vickie.
Bonus! What would be modern day Robin's favorite album?
You might think Punisher, because that's the album Graceland Too is on.
You'd be wrong.
The correct answer is:
Folklore by Taylor Swift!
Tumblr media
Maya has said her most recent album Moss was heavily inspired by Folklore, and while it is distinctly different it definitely comes through in the album. And I'm not going to do lyrical analyses on why every song is relatable to Robin, but as a Taylor Swift Expert, just trust me on this one.
Tumblr media
I'm considering making 2 playlists one for 80s Robin Buckley and one for modern Robin Buckley but we'll see.
If you read this entire thing you are entitled to one free kiss on the mouth idk why anyone would read this incredibly niche ramble but tysm.

Maroon x Blue Sunday Lovin'
Side Note: This was penned right after the game and debrief with second dad. So yes, late post, yet again. Was talking to my second dad after getting home as he can still outrun millennials on a full court basketball game. LOL. He even joked that during their time, height is not an advantage. Also, those hey days were spent in no less than Katipunan. He pushed the envelope further saying that he used to watch games live but traffic is just so bad; and he's glad that he didn't get a cardiac arrest live via satellite, too. There goes today's game debriefing. Later, I slid a note about how maroon mixes so well with blue. Ang ganda. Parang kumikinang siya sa mata ko.
Meanwhile, a friend who is a legit UAAP fan slid a DM asking since when I became a fan. This is a really funny story, sobrang babaw to be precise. Back in college I sighed over the thought of going to a game to represent your school in UAAP basketball. It's like a euphoric pill I can not swallow because I am but an outsider. One of the reasons why I commute from Las Pinas to Diliman is because I wanted to watch a game live and to cheer for my school. HAHAHAHAHHA. Never mind that I'm but a graduate school student with 36 units down and a thesis that's left to rot. Never mind that I still feel like an outsider. There's something about this little dream turned reality that makes me really giddy.
Going back to second dad... I found an opening to say that blue looks more and more tempting. Of course, he whacked back saying that I already have blue in my blood, only from Leon Guinto. UGH. And that, my LS dream will just turn my heart black. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. He reminded me that he gave it a try himself and that I just need to focus on my digital game. LOL. Eto na naman po kami ng second dad ko. Nagde-debate na naman na akala mo totoong anak niya ako. JUSQ. I knew what he means naman. But, I didn't back down saying that since I'm dabbling with AI, I'm wondering if using it in LS will make things better and faster.
One of the things I shared to him was that I'd most likely fail the exam. He said: Panigurado papasa ka. I was taken aback since I feel like I'm so clunky and can be labelled as sakto lang in all things I do. Ang bitbit ko lang is my intention, thus being intentional. (Redundancy is the key to me. CHZ.)
So, what's my take on today's game?
Hindi ako pikon. Start pa lang, I said sana matawid ng UP pero I have a hunch this would either be a close and tough fight OR we'll go home without the bacon.
Also, ang ganda ng galaw ng Katips. Pero, and weird lang din ng mga tawag. Unli freethrow Sunday po tayo, ladies and chemenemen. In fairness, may certain certainty bawat bitaw ng Blue Eagles. 'Yung tipong humihinga muna, sisipat, saka babato. Dagdagan mo pa ng dasal na may Jesuit vibe 'yan. I even saw a few female lolas na nag-antanda bago mag-game. HAHAHAHA. Heswita pong tunay. Tabi na agad Maroons. LOL.
UP naman today parang more of instincts and tactics. LOLOLLOLLOLLOLL. Sorry but true. This is only the second live game I watched. The first is the UP-Ateneo final game a few years back. I don't follow UAAP in general unlike my college days. Wala lang. Gusto ko lang talaga salpukan ng maroon and blue. Ganda. Visual appeal: 1000000. The stark contrast is such a vibe. The cool blues and the heated maroons.
Lemme add that the school hymns and cheers actually show that legit stark contrast. 'Yung Maroons, very high horse na emotionally packed. Medyo bordering na ng you can't sit with us. Ganun din naman Blue Eagles kaso mas subtle and mas brainy and poetic. LOL. Gets ba? Same alley but different store fronts and merchs. EMS. Me to myself: UP pa U-U-U pa kayo, U-WI tuloy tayo neto. Hahahaha. Also me: Buti na lang nanalo Katips para choosing the school won't need a spoonful of sugar that night. Also me ulit: Win or lose, it's maroon I CHZ. Tabi.
I won't go down the commentary route because that's not my cup of tea. My voice is raspy because it's just so nice to let loose after so much work and personal stuff that's happening. I just need a distraction. Watching games live is an experience on its own. Parang may pasavogue and of course, seeing the asses of players who perform is cute; walang pagnanasa. Saka, true pa rin, napapansin ko lang players kapag may silbi sila sa game like my super crush LA Tenorio. Mula noon, hanggang ngayon. Masipag. Maangas. Grounded. Magaling mag-English and Tagalog. Simple pero bumabaon. Ganern. 'Di ko sure if perky ba ass niya kasi ilong niya nakikita kong nauuna e. LOL.
BTW, I saw the shushing up close. In fairness to the Atenistas, unbothered. ALAVEETTTT. 'Yan ang isang strength nila. Tahimik lang pero 'pag may magandang play, they babble. CHZ. And it's so fun to be near the side of Ateneo, too. Nag-sorry pa 'yung girl sa unahan ko nung natalo. I replied naman that deserving sa win and that it's just a game. She smiled back. Hihihihihihihi.
I wanna see UP and Ateneo in the finals!!!

Un-calendared
"Uy, wala na sa kalendaryo yung edad mo!"
Common joke among young adults. Literal translation yata yung title. Anyway, people stop counting at either 25 or 30/31, depending on the level of acceptance.
Then comes the more ~difficult/ annoying comments. Get married, have kids, settle down. In my case, puro ka aral, nakaka-intimidate ka na siguro kaya ganyan. Oof.
My birthday month marks the end of the 1st quarter and the designated time to celebrate women and our contribution to society. For a patriarchal society such as ours, we celebrate women in lip service - go, be empowered, but not so much as to bruise the ego of men. So much for Fire Prevention (and on this month too).
Should women be defined by marriage and their capability to bear children? I don't think so. I mean, sure, it's a God-given commandment, but it is equally a duty. A big responsibility. So, we should not leave offhanded remarks such as these.
Enough with the political commentary. We should know the drill by now.
///
It's a big blessing my birthday fell on a Friday, a perfect segue to a long weekend. Hehe. I did most of my favorite things -- get some pampering and relax, read a book somewhere quiet, eat dinner with our family. Ticked all the boxes, a well-deserved gift. Thank you, Lord!
I enjoyed a bit of solitude today. It shields me from a lot of noise. I was initially planning not to open my phone too much, but since we have a big event on Monday, I thought I should still be on call just to be sure. Anyway, our team did not bother me much with concerns, so it was a peaceful day.
Finally found the courage to dye my hair. Still on the safe side, but who cares really. I liked it.
Could have spent some more time reading, but since it's near payday, people flocked to the mall and there's not much sitting areas. Should probably do this on Sunday or whenever before the second semester rush kicks in.
///
Blessing I'm thankful for: no back pain, I can still stretch my body. Hahaha! I enjoy the job I do. There are times when I feel overwhelmed and stressed out, but God always gives me breathing room. Pay's not to high, but enough to meet our daily needs. A win, still.
We're getting recognition as expert in economics. Need to sharpen further my analysis of issues, so we can move to the next level. But even then, the regular quotes from BWorld is already a good start.
I'm also grateful that I get to cook for my siblings, prepare baon and stuff. I enjoy it. Cleaning has also been a fun thing to do. Marie Kondo's spirit probably took over. Also, I have finally learned how to cold brew coffee, make my own Spanish latte and mocha. Hihi.
Stuff I'm praying for: recently wrote down (finally) my prayer for a partner in life. Lord, please naman. I guess I'm at a stage where I'd also want to spend time with someone, invest in a relationship. Inasmuch as I find our society a difficult place to raise kids, I still want one. Twins pala. Wuw.
Also, praying for a big win in scholarship for PHD and some more preparatory workshops and conferences. I'm asking God for more time to write and really pin down my research direction.
Time to (literally) plant. Patience really to take care of my pananim. Ilang beses na silang nategi. Hahaha. Also, to really make it a habit to exercise hahaha! Enjoying our weekly Zumba at the uni, also morning stretches. Recently, I was unable to do it regularly. Mejo lethargic. Trying, trying.
///
On hiatus ang aking podcast, mostly because I had to check assignments and essays, then upload grades. Preparing for the second season hahaha! Kala mo naman.
///
Eto na muna. I just typed randomly my thoughts here. Good birthday this year, no drama. :)

10. “Jack,” Hardy
youtube
Country music has a rich history of drinking songs, from breezy celebrations (Toby Keith’s “Red Solo Cup”) to despondent confessionals (Merle Haggard’s “Misery and Gin”). “Jack,” a new single from the fast-rising country star Hardy, sits somewhere in the middle, and provides several compelling twists on the well-explored subgenre.
First, it’s written from the perspective of the bottle itself, as it tries to win over a new convert. Second, its metal influences lend it a bracing forcefulness akin to slamming an empty shot glass onto a wooden bar. Third, it engages in none of the blind devotion, self-pity, or moralizing that plagues many drinking songs, instead telling a straightforward and true story about both the heroic and demonic aspects wrought forth by liquid courage. Hardy isn’t afraid to find the gray within difficult topics—see his murder ballad “Wait In the Truck”—and “Jack” is a prime example of his developing craftsmanship.—Andrew R. Chow
9. “Kind of Girl,” MUNA
youtube
Though the indie pop group MUNA scored plenty of buzz this year for their Phoebe Bridgers collaboration, the queer love anthem “Silk Chiffon,” it’s their plaintive rumination on self-love, “Kind of Girl,” that’s the glittering crown jewel of their self-titled third studio album. Fresh off a new deal with Bridgers’ Saddest Factory Records after an unceremonious break with RCA, the trio’s hope for the future shines bright on the song, an acoustic track rippling with emotion that evokes a heartfelt country ballad.
Teeming with tender vulnerability and radical kindness, the song is an earnest ode to the power of love, both given and received over the course of a lifetime, where change is not only inevitable but necessary. Amidst growing pains, the song is a missive to be gentle with everyone, especially ourselves: “Yeah, I like telling stories/ But I don’t have to write them in ink/ I could still change the end/ at least I’m the kind of girl who thinks I can.”—Cady Lang

8. “Unholy,” Sam Smith ft. Kim Petras
youtube
Sam Smith and Kim Petras both scored their first no. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Unholy,” a lusty, sinuous song about the forbidden fruit of a married man’s illicit affair. Smith and Petras’ history-making feat at the top of the charts (they’re the first openly nonbinary and trans artists to nab the peak spot) has also translated to TikTok, where the certifiably provocative chorus (“Mummy don’t know daddy’s getting hot/ At the body shop, doing something unholy/ He lucky, lucky”) has become a viral soundbite. The song’s commercial success is absolutely well-deserved—anchored by a haunting Arabic scale progression and a throbbing bass, the synth-heavy track is a little dark, a little campy, and 100% a very good time, whether you’re sweating it out on a dance floor or giving it a casual listen.—C.L.
7. “Finesse,” Pheelz ft. BNXN
youtube
There’s a reason “Finesse” became a TikTok sensation in February: its chorus is one of the catchiest of the year, an unfiltered ray of sunshine. Pheelz, a sought-after Nigerian producer who has worked with Afrobeats superstars like Olamide and Tiwa Savage, trades effortlessly cool verses with the rising singer BNXN. And the song isn’t played out yet: expect to hear it plenty during the World Cup, as the song made the FIFA 23 soundtrack and name-drops the footballers Joseph Yobo, Daniel Owefin Amokachi, and Mo Salah.—A.R.C.
6. “ChevyS10,” Sudan Archives
youtube
The main hook of Sudan Archive’s “ChevyS10” doesn’t drop until three minutes and forty-five seconds into the song. Up to that point, a whole lot has happened: a journey from the Bronx to the ‘burbs; some pointed class commentary; autotuned harmonic fireworks; a little tri-state drag racing. But not until the hook hits does the song really kick into high gear, and become an avant-garde dance-pop treatise for the ages. As Sudan Archives—real name Brittney Denise Parks—chants the deceptively simple refrain (“cruising in a Chevy S-10”), the musical walls start to move around her: there’s a springy bass line, then a vicious kick drum made only for the sweatiest of nightclubs, then a cranking violin. It’s a living, breathing, flow state; a passage of sweet, unhinged release.—A.R.C.
5. “Bad Habit,” Steve Lacy
youtube
Steve Lacy’s quiet ascent to the top of the charts with “Bad Habit” this year evoked the same feelings that the song did: pure, euphoric joy. The track, a single from his second studio album, the aptly named Gemini Rights, is a soulful, mellow melange of wistful longing, playful flirtation, and straight-up vibes. While the lyrics sound like cheeky ad-libs, tailor-made for TikTok soundbites, Lacy’s songwriting packs a deeply emotional impact, musing on both yearning (“I wish I knew, I wish I knew you wanted me”) and boyish desire (“Can I bite your tongue like my bad habit?/ Would you mind if I made a pass at it?”). Though the song is lo-fi easy listening at its best, don’t be surprised if it gets at your feelings with each listen.—C.L.
4. “FNF,” Glorilla
youtube
On the streets, the undeniable song of the summer was “F.N.F (Let’s Go)”—and for good reason. The track, a breakout single from Memphis rapper Glorilla and producer Hitkidd, is a boisterous and thrilling crunk anthem for single ladies everywhere and a sparkling addition to the Southern rap canon. Over a menacing beat, Glorilla, a former church girl (she was born Gloria Hallelujah Woods) turned gangsta rap darling, offers a bombastic and unabashed celebration of the newly single life, her husky voice reaching a barking timbre when she talks about her newfound liberation.
While it’s no doubt a breakup song, “FNF” is also an ode to female friendship; indeed, the song’s most exhilarating moments come when Glorilla gives a shoutout to her girls during a spelling lesson in the song’s now-TikTok viral hook: “I’m F-R-E-E, f-ck n-gga free/ That mean I ain’t gotta worry ’bout no f-ck n-gga cheating/ And I’m S-I-N-G-L-E again/ Outside hanging out the window with my ratchet-ass friends.”—C.L.

3. “Part of the Band,” the 1975
“Part of the Band,” the gorgeous, lush lead single from the 1975’s Being Funny in a Foreign Language, marks the band’s return to music following 2020’s Notes on a Conditional Form. Frontman Matty Healy sings this self-aware, stream-of-consciousness track with the help of some background vocals from producer Jack Antonoff. The song features a sweeping string section and Healy’s charming vocals, which propel the listener forward even if the lyrics don’t always make sense. Even Healy admitted he barely knows what it means: “As a narrative, I don’t know what the song is about,” he told Apple Music. “It was just this belief that I could talk, and that was OK, and it made sense, and I didn’t have to qualify it that much.” Whatever it means, it sounds great.—Moises Mendez II
2. “Delincuente,” Tokischa
youtube
While the thundering beat and the raunchy lyrics are enough to get your heart racing, the real star of “Delincuente” is the unabashed and fully assured confidence of Tokischa, the Dominican dembow artist who’s been making waves as a queer, sex-positive provocateur disrupting her genre, one hit at a time, respectability politics be damned. The track, which also prominently features Anuel AA and Ñengo Flow, is filled with racy and at times ludicrous double entendres which create an intoxicating romp, driven in turn by a bouncing and infectious rhythm. But it’s Tokischa’s irrepressible, irresistible energy and powerful, rock-influenced vocals that make the song a standout, the liberated anthem of an artist who answers to no one but herself and her pleasure.—C.L.
1. “Titi Me Pregunto,” Bad Bunny
youtube
For the four years I’ve been writing TIME’s year-end music roundups, my colleagues and I have enforced a self-imposed rule to never feature the same artist in both the song and album categories. To do so felt narrow-minded and redundant, and we felt it important to spread the love around with the few slots we have.
But we had to break tradition for Bad Bunny, who lands on the top of both our albums and songs lists. Un Verano Sin Ti is an unimpeachable collection top to bottom, and “Titi Me Pregunto” is its crown jewel: a speaker-rattling, tightly-coiled whoop-ass can of boisterous exuberance. Bad Bunny wields his malleable, magnificent voice in all of its forms, through dextrous rapidfire verses and sludgy singalongs; he makes even his gasps for breath sound sexy. The song’s aesthetics alone pushed it toward complete cultural domination. It hit the top 10 in 13 countries, and when I went to see a concert by the DJ Sofia Kourtesis, all she wanted to do, instead of play her own songs, was sing “Titi Me Pregunto.”
But like all great songs, “Titi Me Pregunto” is much more than its sheer sonic brilliance. While the first two verses show Bad Bunnyplaying the carefree, chauvinist playboy, he eventually confesses that it’s all a shield for his emotional fragility. “I’d like to fall in love but I can’t… I don’t even trust myself,” he sings despondently. “I don’t want to be like that anymore.” Just another day in the office for the biggest pop star in the world—A.R.C.
Correction, Nov. 22
The original version of this story misstated the name of a Hardy song. It is “Wait in the Truck,” not “Wait in the Car.”

Jejemon | Kuroo filo!smau
-> Settling at her cousin's hometown, Kozume Y/N is forced to attend the school her cousin, Kenma, attends to. On her first day at school, she meets Kuroo Tetsurō, a complete package - kind, tall, handsome, athletic, and smart. There is only one problem, though: jejemon ang hinayupak.
004. Lord Kenma + written text
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Sige na, bestfriend."
"Mama mo, bestfriend."
"Bakit ba ayaw mo?"
"Bakit ba ang kulit mo?"
Kenma exhaled violently, sawa na sa kakulitan ni Kuroo. But Kuroo remained unfaltered. Nakatitig pa rin ito kay Kenma nang seryoso.
"Pangalan lang," Kuroo clasped his hands to show his desperation pero siyempre, hindi bobo si Kenma.
"Ano ba 'yan, nakakaumay na kayo," reklamo ni Yaku na kakapasok lang sa gym dala ang bento niya, "Ano ba 'yan, Kuroo, interesado ka pa rin sa pinsan ni Kenma?"
"Ayaw ibigay pangalan, Yaku, ang damot," Kuroo pouted dahilan para suntukin siya ni Yaku CHAROT.
"Bakit ba kasi ayaw mo ibigay ang pangalan, Kenma?" Tanong ni Yaku.
Kenma remained silent. Don't get him wrong. He likes his bestfriend. Mabait ito, matalino, at (unfortunately) gwapo.
Kaso...ano kasi...
<- Kuroo
"Kung ayaw ibigay, edi ikaw ang magtanong?" Yaku said as if he's tired of all this drama, "Hinatid mo sa first day, 'di ba? Edi alam mo saan ang room. Tapos alam mo pa ang apelido."
Kenma's face fell.
Awts gege.
"Hala, gago, oo nga 'no!" FINALLY, GUMANA NA BRAIN CELLS NI KUROO, "Talino mo, Yaku!"
"Naman."
"Shet, puntahan ko muna sa room-"
"HINDI PWEDE!" Kenma exclaimed bago tumayo.
Kenma ran towards Kuroo, spreading his arms para pigilan 'to makalabas sa gym.
"Ay, KJ," commentary ni Yaku.
"Kenma, naman..." Maktol ni Kuroo.
"Sige, lumabas ka," sabi ni Kenma, "Kung lalabas ka, friendship over."
Kuroo gasped. Hindi makapaniwala na kaya siyang traydurin ng bestfriend niya.
"Luh, Kenma, pare, sumusobra ka na ata?" <- Yaku
Ganito ba ang naramdaman ni Lord nung kinain nina Adam at Eve ang forbidden fruit? (Okay, teka, ewan ko ba bakit I keep on referencing the Bible huhu minus 5 points sa langit amen)
"Fine..."
He screamed before running.
Which is not much, really. Sa haba ba naman ng legs ni Kuroo, lamang na lamang siya kay Kenma sa speed.
"ON MY WAY NA AKO, BABY- ARAY!"
<- Fukunaga ._.
"Kasi, potangina-" Kuroo froze from screaming.
<- Fukunaga (2)
"Wala kong nakwento...?" <- Kenma
"Ako ang nagkwento..." Fukunaga ._.
Medyo natigilan si Kuroo pero medj lang. He smirked nang nakaraos bago inalok ang kamay, "You can call me Tetsu."
"Tetsu...'
Napaluhod si Kenma, hope fleeing his heart.

Idk it's my first and probably last tumblr post, "reading into things 2.0?"
Click this link if you would like to share the original post that prompted this. Please go like it too! I read this link yesterday, and it clarified things I thought I understood well enough already. You'll need to read the source first for my commentary to make sense. Thank you for reading.
Question: Did harry ever say that he was unlabelled?
@genuineconspiracy answered:
As far as I know, the word "unlabelled...."
Harry's quote from GQ in 2013: "Bisexual? Me? I don't think so. I'm pretty sure I'm not."
Now fast forward to a 2014 One Direction interview when Harry casually made a few pointed comments. In a separate interview on the same day, Niall scoffed at the suggestion that his next date could be a man, Harry bumped him on the knee and quipped: "Hey, don't knock it 'til you try it."
"The "unlabelled" thing comes from the time...why queer artists should be asked to subject themselves to that treatment."
1. I do not speak for everyone in the LGBTQ+ community: This section discusses why I'm not pressuring myself to label my sexuality for now/maybe forever or decide to come out as unlabeled. Whether with any intention or not, Harry has softened barriers for some things to feel less taboo/daunting. Most of us do not want to subject ourselves to different treatment, especially if it's negative. Not all of us have the privilege to do so either.
2. I agree it is not justifiable, and he's right to question them. Being open to everyone isn't easy. Now imagine yourself no less human than right now, but add millions of eyes on you. It's insensitive to assume about someone when they could be doing their best/what is comfortable—please let's stop invalidating what we don't understand.
"the line "It's not a case of: I'm not telling you cos I don't want to tell you."....his first opening band, the queer girl group MUNA...it's that he can't talk about it."
Maybe. I agree; the quotes from the opening band MUNA are telling. There is so much that is telling. Check this out? Harry said he shows how he feels about many things with his actions, more than he verbalizes. The other side of this is Harry has also said he likes that there is a sense of mystery about his life now, and he keeps as much as he can/wants(?) private. I don't blame him whether that's the sole reason or not; it's valid.
"The reporters asking...know that's a possibility for him...by setting up barriers for queer people to clear - like a formal coming out."
I entirely agree.
"I believe the last comment Harry gave about his sexuality in the Guardian interview makes it pretty clear what he meant:
Harry: You respect that someone's gonna ask. And you hope that they respect they might not get an answer. "
"He's telling us that he's not commenting on his identity...He doesn't seem to care what other people think."
He really doesn’t. I don’t perceive Harry as insulted by any genders or sexualities. He’s unbothered comfortable and accepting and I think it would be great if more people felt that way. Some people still live through a prejudice lens and use different labels as insults when they shouldn’t be at all.
"We all know that no one except Harry knows the reality, so we're all just doing the best with what we do know."
As far as labeling goes, I understand where others are coming from, and at the same time still implore we respect what is shared and what we currently know. I'm cis, so I'm not the most equipped to address this. Generally, no one should change pronouns of someone unless said person puts out a message for everyone or directly tells you. To clarify, even though other pronouns are not disrespectful by themselves, assuming Harry would want us to change his, is. So we should all keep using he/him unless told otherwise. The same is to be said about sexuality. However, words like gay queer and no known label are always acceptable because those are umbrella terms for the lgbtq+ community.
My conclusion on the above and what I learned: I also respect that people have different opinions on things in this fandom, and we won't all arrive to the same conclusions, and that's okay. It is best not to assume things if we do not fully know, and finally, if you do respect people enough to ask them, be prepared not to receive an answer or the one you prefer to hear.
More: Queer people are under no obligation to announce or owe the world an explanation and are still just as valid if they don't make their identities loud. It does not sit right with me to speak for people, so I do not think it is disrespectful to understand the topic more. Now I know how to explain better if I am ever defending him or myself honestly. (separate circumstances)
What Harry does not share or does share is his right. Someone's mental/physical health and happiness should matter more than what we may think is true. I am grateful for the things Harry has done, inspiring the world and making it better. I believe sexuality and gender are fluid, and so as I would for anyone, I support Harry without boxing him in, and that extends to career or personal things—unless he chooses to.
Off-topic, but here is a vague message as an extended ending to this post because I wrote it back in June 2021 when Harry was acting for the film My Policeman: As of late, it hurts more than usual that Harry is constantly being suffocated by crowds of people who want something from him, mainly because I know that he'd give them everything if he could. We can do better, can't we? So let's work on understanding one another. Practice extending more kindness and respect, whether it's family, friends, a colleague, social media anon, stranger/celebrity. We can all agree on one thing: Harry deserves the best this world has and to be treated as well as he treats all of us.

Commentary on the "Pardner" project
Before I mention the musical number project, fair warning that this will get personal. I worked on this project during the month of Ramadan when I could not leave home, which resulted in some mental anguish. But I won't get into details since it is pretty much self-explanatory if you're queer. FYI: This is long af. Lots to say.
Background:
I've been drawing fan illustrations/fan comics for 15 years. I never once reference anything from my cultural background. Wild, I know. One of the reasons why I have yet to do so until now was that there wasn't a desi-inspired character that I would enjoy as much as Frye, especially from a franchise that I had adored since day one when I was broke and just started college. There was no way 17 years old me would believe an inkling idol with a Desi background would be a thing and not be offensive. I know some voiced their issues with Frye's design, but after looking through the art book, I am GLAD this was the design they approved. I won't talk about colorism/racism in this post. Don't want to get into the social issues. This is a representation that I'm okay with, and it is a positive one.
So, I grew up watching musicals, whether it is from Disney or Bollywood/other box-office desi movies. Music is a pretty biggie dealie for yours truly. Gosh, I remember in elementary/grade school, I had a classmate who had the same energy as Frye and did the teeth thing as she brought a tape to school. She shared "Lal Dupatta" with the homeroom teacher on the school CRT tv. She was dancing and singing along with the song and tried to have me join in the festivity. But I was and am a shy girl, so I couldn't do it. I did enjoy her enthusiasm and the song. This was something I culturally understood. I felt connected.
Reminiscing that moment, I declared that I should reference one musical number that would fit in the Splatoon universe. For her sake and mine.
Old musical number:
One rule I had while I was searching for a song was that I didn't want the song to be too culturally specific or ignorant of stereotypes. So, no dancing. In the future, I'll draw Deep Cut dancing but nothing culturally significant until I do some well-deserving research before flinging myself into the fiery pits of hell. I learned my lesson internet, lol.
I had one specifically in mind before the partner song. More romantic implications, but it had one person singing. No duet. Sure, BM would appear more, but it would be just him playing an instrument while Shiver singing. Then I would have them crashing together while Frye witnessed this whole shebang at a distance. I also planned to add the Squidbeak Squad be the peanut gallery and have Craig do the "Harold, they're gay" joke. That was the initial idea until I stumbled upon a better one.
New musical number:
After eating my dinner, I passed by my mother while she watched Sholay. During that time, Mom was watching movies from the 60s and 70s on youtube. One was nostalgia, and the other was missing out on some or does not remember some of the stories. Sholay, particularly, caught my attention because the silver fox daddy, Sanjeev Kumar, appeared on the screen. Rood af, bruv. I know, thirst trap.
Seeing him in this movie triggered a memory where Dad showed me a motorcycle scene. I remember Kishore Da was the singer for that song, but that scene was from a different movie. A similar concept of two buddies riding on a motorcycle together, but the energy wasn't there. Out of curiosity, I ended up watching Sholay with Mom.
After viewing the friendship song, I shot up with excitement. "THIS! This one screams them!" As I initially said in the main post, I sought that chaotic energy. Two morally good-leaning thieves sing in a duet about their friendship while being a menace to society. That's THEM!
Tumblr media
I know BM is an essential member of Deep Cut, but I'm not considering the movie but this specific score. If this project was about the movie, I would have DJ Octavio as Silver Fox Daddy, and BM would be Shiver's romantic interest. I did have plans on doing so in a separate post, but I gave up on that thought because I became exhausted after drawing eight pages of Fryver. I thought this would take me at least three weeks to draw. Instead, it was more than a month! I couldn't continue because of the lack of going to the gym, a month's worth of fasting, and in the middle of the holy month, I got sick from a stomach virus. Sorry BM. I want to tackle some other projects right now, and as promised, there will be more of him.
4 became 6, then 7, and finally 8:
Initially, I had the project divided into four pages. These were the four:
Tumblr media
While drawing the four, I debated whether I should add in the coin toss scene. At that time, I could not figure out who could fill the village girl role until I was gobsmacked, realizing how slow and stupid I could be. I thought BM for the longest time, but he's too nice. If the coin rejects the idea of sleeping, he will give them the signature bear hug instead of waddling away. I want these two to be dunked on, especially after stealing his icy pop. "I'm upset that the dastardly duo stole my ice cream, but FRIENDS!!!" That kind of energy is NOT needed for this goof.
Once I figured out that the cousins could fill the Village girl role, the project became six pages long. I left that as a bonus. I acknowledge some people ship each of the cousins with Shiver/Frye. I nodded in some parts, like Callie's blushing. Hopefully, this bonus one was respectful enough. I didn't want to offend anyone.
At this point, I was confident that I was done until I realized there was no introduction to this project. Who the hell would know this 48-year-old movie reference? Very few. Which is fine. I don't know many pop cultural references. If you mention something about star wars, I would go whomst. Not a musical? Disengage, lol. I am not a movie buff to begin with. Music (folk metal plz) and (indie) games I fuck with. Anyway, I drew the introduction to the sketch dump:
Tumblr media
I've laid the chorus across on the top. The background is straight out of the game (you got me bent sideways if you expected me to draw a unique background. Like, I'm insane, but not THAT insane.) I drew the characters that appeared in the sketch dump. These three stealing the show. How the hell did I draw this in one go?:
Tumblr media
Damn, this hand. They're too cute for any school.
After, I've drawn the introduction. Surely, at this point, I'm done with this project. Nope. There is no conclusion. Can't have an introduction without a conclusion. Gotta include an ending. So, I contemplated. While doing that, I cleaned up some of the sketches, and I shared a part of the WIP with my partner, jokingly stating:
Tumblr media
She was right. To close this project, it's literally sealed with a kiss. Why didn't I think of that?! Maybe because I assume they ARE together.
Despite being romantic, I often don't draw two characters kissing. I drew four kisses, including this one, within 15 years of actively drawing. I guess either I'm not confident at drawing that, or it's not a huge part of my love language. Also, it can't help when your girl towers over you. Usually, it's me receiving not giving. I need to carry a ladder around to kiss, lol.
At last, I drew the kiss. And boi, isn't it dramatic, huh? Nonetheless, It's thematic. I can finally close this project for good...? *Nervously laughing* There's more coming.
Additional Thoughts:
Fryver: If they're partners in crime, then they gotta gay equally. I made sure both of them had their moment in the spotlight. For example, in the coin toss scene, I initially had Frye flipping the coins. But, after drawing four pages where Frye leads some parts more than Shiver. Break the role and have Shiver take charge in this scene.
Tumblr media
It works well, especially Shiver using their hand as a fan while simultaneously displaying the coins. This was before the art book! Pure coincidence that a character I finalized happens to like counting money in their pass time. This entire time, I thought BM was the money person. Big Man, big money. Naw, it's your local octoling, Shiver! Also, Frye doing the ;d with a tooth sticking out, giving a thumbs up. Great. Love to see it.
Big Man: Before the introduction page, BM only appeared once in the "MY ICECREAM" scene. This was drawn after the introduction:
Tumblr media
The idea of having BM playing the trumpet while he perches on top of a moving truck, it's fucking hilarious. He rather not risk his life whenever either of the two operates a vehicle, but he's okay with playing incidental music on the roof of a stranger's car. Sure, buddy. You do you, lol. Squid Sisters: I have a project I want to do about the cousins. I am still determining how long that will take, but it's pretty long. I want to start something small.
This was my first time drawing them. I've drawn the other idols. Although chibi Marina should not count as adequately drawn. I do have an Off the Hook comic I want to work on. First, I need to write the script!
Tumblr media
This was the first panel I drew before I worked on the other panels. This is basically my sister and me whenever we encounter someone we don't like or don't have the energy to engage. Lil sis will give her signature fake smile, and I'll give a stank look. No mask, no filter. I'm glad I could capture the dichotomy of the cousins in a single frame.
Final Thoughts:
There were moments when I wanted to give up entirely on this project. Negative thoughts such as, "No one would bat an eye at this," repeatedly. But as a perfectionist, I hate unfinished work. My work specifically. I persevered by telling myself, "Just do it for yourself."
It was a good drawing exercise. I want to get better at drawing these characters. Get to know and understand them better. I've abandoned trying to draw in Splatoon's anatomical proportions. Not my style, lol.
I'm happy that I drew the kiss. After sketching, yes sketching, seven pages, I was exhausted. I got sick in the middle of the fasting, unable to leave home because of fasting. It was too much (it's a good thing, I work remotely from home.) BUT. It's not gay, ya know. I'VE got to draw the SMOOCH. Or else this project will be trapped in the "gal pals" limbo. Also, not me struggling to NOT be wed to a cishet desi man. Anyone that is queer, plz.
Sigh. I had to draw this kiss secretly, away from my parents' prying eyes. I don't want them to question why I'm drawing two bipedal cephalopods kissing, let alone it being gay. And for whatever reason, they keep entering my office and staring at my monitors. I am a professional graphic designer, too. Let me work in peace!
Anyway, the kiss.
Tumblr media
Honestly, talk about a mood. Especially when you're in a long-distance relationship. Five years in a romantic relationship and will be nine years in a platonic relationship with my partner in crime.

Muna is Palestine, Yakub is Israel: The Untold Story of Sheikh Jarrah
Tumblr media
Muna al-Kurd
There are two separate Sheikh Jarrah stories - one read and watched in the news and another that receives little media coverage or due analysis.
The obvious story is that of the nightly raids and violence meted out by Israeli police and Jewish extremists against Palestinians in the devastated East Jerusalem neighborhood.
For weeks, thousands of Jewish extremists have targeted Palestinian communities in Jerusalem’s Old City. Their objective is the removal of Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. They are not acting alone. Their riots and rampages are directed by a well-coordinated leadership composed of extremist Zionist and Jewish groups, such as the Otzma Yehudit party and the Lehava Movement. Their unfounded claims, violent actions and abhorrent chant “Death to the Arabs” are validated by Israeli politicians, such as Knesset member Itamar Ben-Gvir and the Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, Arieh King.
Here is a little introduction to the political discourse of Ben-Gvir and King, who were caught on video shouting and insulting a wounded Palestinian protester. The video starts with MK Ben-Gvir disparagingly yelling at a Palestinian who was apparently wounded by Israeli police, yet returned to protest against the evictions planned for Sheikh Jarrah.
Ben-Gvir is heard shouting, “Abu Hummus, how is your ass?”
“The bullet is still there, that’s why he is limping,” responds the Deputy Mayor, King, to Ben-Gvir.  King continues, “Did they take the bullet out of your ass? Did they take it out already? It is a pity it did not go in here,” King continues, pointing to his head.
Delighted with what they perceive to be a whimsical commentary on the wounding of the Palestinian, Ben-Gvir and King’s entourage of Jewish extremists laugh.
While “Abu Hummus”, wounded yet still protesting, is a testament to the tenacity of the Palestinian people, King, Ben-Gvir, the settlers and the police are a representation of the united Israeli front aimed at ethnically cleansing Palestinians and ensuring Jewish majority in Jerusalem.
Another important participant in the ongoing Israeli ethnic cleansing campaign in Jerusalem is Israel’s court system which has provided a legal cover for the targeting of Palestinian inhabitants of Jerusalem.
The legal foundation of the Jewish settlers’ constant attempts at acquiring more Palestinian properties can be traced back to a specific 1970 law, known as the Legal and Administrative Matters Law, which allowed Jews to sue Palestinians for properties they claim to have owned prior to the establishment of Israel on the ruins of historic Palestine in 1948. While Palestinians are excluded from making similar claims, Israeli courts have generously handed Palestinian homes, lands and other assets to Jewish claimants. In turn, these homes, as in the case of Sheikh Jarrah and other Palestinian neighborhoods in East Jerusalem, are often sold to Jewish settler organizations to build yet more colonies on occupied Palestinian land.
Last February, the Israeli Supreme Court awarded Jewish settlers the right to many Palestinian homes in Sheikh Jarrah. Following a Palestinian and international backlash, it offered Palestinians a ‘compromise’, whereby Palestinian families relinquished ownership rights to their homes and agreed to continue to live there as tenants, paying rents to the very illegal Jewish settlers who have stolen their homes in the first place, but who are now armed with a court decision.
However, the ‘logic’ through which Jews claim Palestinian properties as their own should not be associated with a few extremist organizations. After all, the ethnic cleansing of Palestine in 1948 was not the work of a few extreme Zionists. Similarly, the illegal occupation of East Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip in 1967 and the massive settlement enterprise that followed was not the brainchild of a few extreme individuals. Colonialism in Israel was, and remains, a state-run project, which ultimately aims at achieving the same objective that is being carried out in Sheikh Jarrah - the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians to ensure Jewish demographic majority.
This is the untold story of Sheikh Jarrah, one that cannot be expressed by a few news bytes or social media posts. However, this most relevant narrative is largely hidden. It is easier to blame a few Jewish extremists than to hold the entire Israeli government accountable. Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, is constantly manipulating the subject of demographics to advance the interests of his Jewish constituency. He is a strong believer in an exclusive Jewish state and also fully aware of the political influence of Jewish settlers. For example, shortly before the March 23 elections, Netanyahu made a decision to greenlight the construction of 540 illegal settlement units in the so-called Har-Homa E Area (Abu Ghneim Mountain) in the occupied West Bank, in the hope of acquiring as many votes as possible.
While the Sheikh Jarrah story is garnering some attention even in mainstream US media, there is a near-complete absence of any depth to that coverage, namely the fact that Sheikh Jarrah is not the exception but the norm. Sadly, as Palestinians and their supporters try to circumvent widespread media censorship by reaching out directly to civil societies across the world using social media platforms, they are often censored there, as well.
One of the videos initially censored by Instagram is that of Muna al-Kurd, a Palestinian woman who had lost her home in Sheikh Jarrah to a Jewish settler by the name of Yakub.
“Yakub, you know this is not your house,” Muna is seen outside her home, speaking to Yakub.
Yakub answers, “Yes, but if I go, you don’t go back. So what’s the problem? Why are you yelling at me? I didn’t do this. I didn’t do this. It’s easy to yell at me, but I didn’t do this.
Muna: “You are stealing my house.”
Yakub: “And if I don’t steal it, someone else is going to steal it.”
Muna: “No. No one is allowed to steal it.”
The untold story of Sheikh Jarrah, of Jerusalem - in fact, of all of Palestine - is that of Muna and Yakub, the former representing Palestine, the latter, Israel. For justice to ever be attained, Muna must be allowed to reclaim her stolen home and Yakub must be held accountable for his crime.

The Death of Chinggis Khan: August, 1227
Conqueror, peasant, or lawyer, death comes for us all sooner or later. Here, we look at the Death of Chinggis Khan in August 1227. His final days were shrouded in secrecy as per the Khagan's final wishes, and thus we are left with a variety of theories, some more likely than others, from our sources across Asia and the Mongol Empire. From falling off horseback to wily Gurbelchin, it's quite the collection!

Album Review: ‘Saves The World’ - MUNA
Tumblr media
Bold of you to claim your band will save the world on that notoriously difficult second album…
Yet MUNA do manage such a feat, capturing identity in a constant state of flux while examining heartbreak with enough time and distance.
‘Grow’ provides a stormy meditation of… well, growth as vocalist Katie Gavin proclaims: /I want to grow up/I'm tired of the party games/I'm calling their bluff/They always turn out the same.’ On ‘Stayaway,’ however, the past continues to haunt her, the track itself ironically calling back to the slick, gauzy RnB of the trio’s 2017 debut, About U. The Robyn-esque ‘Never’ starts slow, but once those electrifying synths kick in, you’ll be crying along with Gavin in the cybernetic haze, while ‘Hands Off’ proudly asserts itself with jagged synths and hard, glossy layers.
‘Number One Fan,’ though, is the definite standout. Doubling as both a psych-up anthem and a biting commentary of the stinking cesspool known as stan culture, it’s so goddamn funk it hurts, the kind of nostalgic deep cut you’d probably find on a future Vice City soundtrack its neon-lit mix of 90s club pop and synth-streaked 80s kitsch, all awash in deliciously fuzzy reverb. Why this track hasn’t hit the mainstream in a big way is an absolute crime.
‘Who,’ as well, deals with angst in the modern age, with Gavin reminiscing about a ‘sweet melody’ courtesy of a former lover as glorious waves of sound come crashing down.
The record, however, ends on a mildly optimistic note. The inviting 90s indie cool of ‘Good News (Ya-Ya Song) evokes long summer days with its infectious hop-skip-jump beat before setting its chorus ablaze as Gavin channels her inner Alanis. Hindsight, meanwhile, proves a beautiful thing on ‘It’s Gonna Be Okay, Baby,’ returning to the light and airy vibes of About U. Gavin gives a rough assessment of life, one involving drugs, toxic relationships, queer sexuality and Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. Though battle-weary, she no longer feels defined by her past, bringing the record’s themes of resilience, self-preservation and redemption full circle.
MUNA’s second album doesn’t stray too far from the atmospheric 80s pop bangers we first heard on About U, but the emotional honesty cuts even deeper, a lot more introspective compared to the vaguely political commentary of their debut.
Even with its weaker tracks (‘Navy Blue,’ ‘Pink Light,’ Taken’), Saves The World is still a stellar effort. Face it, these chicks just know how to craft irresistible pop anthems with the emotional depth to match. And Gavin’s vocals have never sounded better.
Rest assured, it’s gonna be okay, baby, ‘cos MUNA are truly here to stay.
