forever disappointed that the new-gen Reploid bosses in Mega Man X8 never actually use their copy chips for anything. like what if Burn Rooster started using Magma Dragoon's Hadokens? or Dark Mantis used Sting Chameleon's invisibility? Gigabolt Man-O-War drained your life like Launch Octopus? it could've shown how truly advanced they are, using special weapons just like X.

Lumine does it in his boss fight, but I would've loved to see references to past Mavericks in other bosses too.

Hello! So this was originally going to be an ask but it spiraled out of my control and it got too long so here we are :D I hope you enjoy my ramblings. Also I'm not a writer so I'm sorry if I sometimes don't make sense (⁠•⁠ ⁠▽⁠ ⁠•⁠;⁠)

Your legends reborn AU has given me brain worms and ideas and I would like to share them if you don't mind! :D

It's mostly about Zero.

So, in one of your posts you said that you view the guardians' animalistic traits as a sign of freedom and that got me thinking about Zero.

I'm not 100% sure on how you interpret him, or how you want him to be in the au but from what I've gathered you like to see him as a Creature™ and it's how i view him too most times!

I love your head cannon that Zero can go on all fours because was not only made to be the ultimate weapon but also the ultimate predator (or hunter I don't remember the exact word you used)

So I was thinking that in your legends reborn au, since it's a time of peace and he is not a war machine anymore, he's (mostly) not a weapon anymore! :D

So, his predator/ hunter side is more present which makes his animalistic traits more prominent then the guardians. He can run on all fours, has paws :3, I like imagining him using his hair/mane as a bed or a blanket, and maybe give him some wings to reflect the absolute armor and the mother elf a little since she was based on him. (I still think he wears armor though)

I just want them to represent how free he is in the new world. I see the world of megaman legends as being very freeing for a being like Zero.

I think he has always lived in very restricting conditions. As I said before this man is a Creature™ and I don't think Wily ever intended for him to be a social one or to live in crowded places like a city (cuz he was supposed to Destroy those). I imagine living in the hunters HQ with so many reploids never felt quite right to him.

And Sure he could act like other reploids and mostly blend in but his mind was still so different he had to work extra hard to fit in. (Basically he's had to mask so hard for most of his life)

I think the only time he felt most like he was in his natural habitat was in the Zero games when he was mindlessly destroying thousands of enemies in large spaces to achieve a goal, and mostly not talking to people. It was still not very fun for him though, since missing most of his memories, and missing people he did not remember did not feel nice.

Then he wakes up in a world where there is no war, no virus, no mavericks, no great or good he needed to die for. Only (relative) peace and a strange new body that needed to sleep and eat.

His body is hard to get used to. The prospect of hunting is not new to him, but eating definitely is, and sleeping is just as hard. Getting used to it is challenging enough that it distracts him from thinking about his situation too hard at first.

After a while, it starts to hit him that he doesn't have a purpose. He had always had something he had to do, something or someone to fight for. But now there was no one and the peace he and his loved ones had fought so hard for was achieved. Now his only purpose was to keep himself alive and help some of the people he finds in trouble, because what else does he do?

This makes him feel empty at first but then it's starts to feel so natural. To just exist, to hunt and help people he finds along the way, to learn about this new world and finally live.

He had never really lived before, not like this, his life was always dominated by being a weapon first. And later, accidentally adopting someone will really make him feel like he's alive.

He still misses X, Axl and many others terribly, but he tries to keep himself busy

Aaaa anyway, what I wanted to get at is that he's finally truly free. Like X is. And I like to portray that as him being able to be more wild.

"Ooh, you know that that makes Mack and V?" Valentina continued, entirely undeterred, and with her hands on her cheeks in mock scandal. "Factory robbers~" X sputtered indignantly too. "What is that even supposed to mean?" "Glitch stole me, though," Mack pointed out, much more calmly. Whether that was because it was actually calm or because it couldn't emphasize was entirely up in the air. "Literally, that's what happened. He very much did rob an antiques museum and take me." "Glitch likes older hardware~" Valentina sang. She knew when she'd struck a main nervous connector, and she was clearly determined to make the most of it one way or another. "And V is definitely corrupting the youth, no two ways about it." X put his head in his newly-patched arms and tried to evaporate into the air. It worked as well as it ever did when Valentina was having a good time at his expense, which was not at all. "I'm innocent. The youth is corrupting me," X mumbled into the workbench. "Also untrue," Mack said. "I'm corrupting both of them, hardware generation be damned."

In the bass when he was rebuilt, did he get upgraded to true free will like the other reploids? Or is he still somewhat programming limited like the other robot masters

Bass has the same programming he did in the classic series! It’s why X refers to him as a “robot master” in one of my sketches. The upgrade really only gave him a new body, as the maverick hunters wanted to preserve as much of his old mind as possible in order to figure out what was up with him and Zero.

What’s interesting to note is that Bass still has free will, but in a really busted way. His programming dictates that he should destroy Mega Man, but because of his amnesia in the Reploid AU, he has no idea who that is. So he’s kinda stuck doing whatever until this “Mega Man” guy shows up.

Suit, check. Tie, tied, cufflinks on, vest and pocket square, shoes not out of place. It's a formal event, a press conference, a diplomatic negotiation and a black-tie gala all in one. It's stressing him out, was what it was. Limited guests, all dressed up.

Literally anything and everything there could be misinterpreted, and equally a space with this many government officials was asking for some sort of ambush or attack by-- Zain crosses his arms again, an attempt to keep from fidgeting, though he was becoming increasingly aware it was starting to make him look equally as unapproachable-- and he and Xanti had only just arrived.

Already he can count several high-profile individuals-- including the speaker for New-Gen Perspective, a peaceful reploid's rights activist group.

A sigh burns and dies in his throat as he looks reluctantly to Xanti. How do I look less standoffish? It's a losing game. "You look nice," awkward conversation, but he was trying. Look casual, damn it. The blond's multicolored eyes travel the ball-room, attempting to find a face he was sure he'd recognize. It's crowded, a full house. "...Any sign of our bodyguard?"

She's a month from turning fifteen and has already been put in three separate foster homes.

They've all said the same thing: she's quiet. She keeps to herself. But she gets into fights.

But it's not her fault.

Kids are vicious. They're mean. Especially when there's a new kid around. She's explained it to all the teachers, but they don't do anything. They can't do anything. They need proof, but nobody is stupid enough to do it while they're being watched.

Until they are.

But even then, the teachers just give a look, threaten detention, and then go about their day. They always have. Her circumstances don't change that.

And she's tired of waiting for someone to do something.

She's a month from turning fifteen, and she's called a troubled teen.

She's turned fifteen and it's snowing today.

The flakes are thick and heavy, quickly coating the ground in less than an hour. She's tempted to go out; she's always loved wandering around in the snow. But her foster family has a baby, and they need an extra hand around.

She doesn't mind.

She knows that's not why they opened their home to her.

They do their best, but they're busy. Even outside of the eight month-old, their work is a handful. Constant calls, frequent trips, long hours, they don't have a ton of time to themselves.

But the wife gently, calmly taught her how to cook. Things she couldn't figure out by just reading, she was effortlessly walked through. And when the woman was able to, she gladly cooked for her family.

They don't remember, but she doesn't care. They're busy. They don't need the added stress of a temporary kid's birthday. She knows they're not going to keep her. She's already heard the husband complaining about her frequent trips to the principal's office.

She's pretty sure he's just worried about his kid. She doesn't blame him.

They don't understand why she gets into fights.

She's turned fifteen, and she watches it snow with a baby in her lap.

She's fifteen and she's in a new home.

They're an older couple, one that has had several foster kids placed in their care.

Foster kids that have been called "troubled." She supposes its fitting. It's here that she hears about a crazy old man. A crazy old man who has threatened trespassers with a gun.

She doesn't think he's actually crazy; he probably just doesn't like people. She gets that. Plus, if you don't want a gun waved at you, don't ignore signs.

She ignores them though.

When she hears that some of the kids think he's a retired Guild Hunter, she decides she's going to talk to him.

Or die trying.

Either way works.

He threatens her with a gun, of course. But she doesn't back down. She asks how he hunted Mavericks. He tells her to get lost. She asks again.

He finally gets tired. He doesn't really want to kill a kid.

She's fifteen, and she starts hatching a crazy plan to hunt Mavericks.

She's fifteen, and she's already a crack shot with a rifle. She's been shooting since she was seven, hunting since she was twelve, but it had been a while. She's glad her skills hadn't deteriorated too badly.

The old man watches her. She never gets his name. He never tells her; that way, if she gets caught, he can't get in trouble. He's taught her what Guild Hunters use to avoid detection from Mavericks. She's turned it into something that looks like reploid armor. He raises a brow but ultimately doesn't say anything. As she gets better with the rifle, he begins teaching her how to make buster charges.

Bullets don't work on them, after all.

Once he's sure she won't get herself killed too quickly, he walks her through on how to turn the rifle into a buster. It won't be as good as a standard issue, but it'll do what she needs it to.

He agrees with her that there are too many Mavericks out here.

She's fifteen, and she's planning on running off to be a vigilante.

Her first kill had just been infected with the virus.

Nobody knew.

She can't believe her luck.

She can use his number for the registry. It won't be flagged as Maverick, at the very least. The old man gives a long sigh when she tells him. She thinks he's regretting letting her talk him into it.

But it's too late now.

She sends the information to the registry via holophone, and receives confirmation.

They didn't look too hard, just as she figured.

Before she leaves, she wishes she could visit her parents' grave.

But they're in a different state.

And she can't backtrack. She'd be caught too quickly. That would be one of the first places they'd check.

She needs to go the opposite direction.

She's sixteen, and she's a mercenary.

Thank you for this blog. I find old posts of Zero being cool and suave and having Sexual thoughts and actions when he likely literally does not know sex exists other than knowing organic life reproduces physically somehow. With how the x games ended up you could argue he has never met a human irl before other than Dr Cain. If the ambiguous consent argument is too much he might get scared and kill you (x9: WTF NEW MAVERICK VIRUS INFECTS HUMANS?)

DID YOU KNOW, as far as i was able to dig, there is nothing anywhere ever that stated iris and zero were a couple? a lot of fandom perception is that iris is zero's girlfriend and they were in wuv, and that half the tragedy of X4 is that he was going against someone he loved. he killed someone he loved. so tragic. :(

thing is, that's kind of complete bupkis.

obviously Iris admired him a lot, and it's not like Zero hated her, but that's about as far as it went! it's one of those popular fanon things that cycles around, like samus being super-motherly to the baby the baby the baby metroid and wubbing her widdle babuu, or flandre scarlet being sealed in the basement to contain her massive power because she's crazy and could kill everyone with the drop of a frilly hat. but then you start digging for where it's from in the games and ????????????? where did it come from? where did it go?

that would be a nope.

the game script? you can look at both the japanese and english script for x4 at your leisure, and even go for the x5 japanese cutscenes, japanese bosses, and english script to look for mentions of Iris as well. iris' dialogue in Xtreme 2 is 95% the same between x and zero, too, but just for posterity's sake here's also the english and japanese script. either way, that would also be a nope.

what about encyclopedic material, like the X Official Complete Works or the Compendium of Rockman X?

She is a Reploid split into both a crystal body and a cyborg(?) body. (Most of the Japanese is difficult to make out, so apologies if this is inaccurate! I could swear that says "サイボーグ" / "cyborg", but that doesn't make sense...)

the closest we get to this is that Zero Went On A Date, which is tucked away in the side of a Capcom Music Generation booklet for X1-X6

which is all fine and dandy, i guess, but a date can be anything. is it a hang-out date? a shopping date? a romantic date? a social date? a business date? a casual date? a competitive tournament-level date? it's difficult to argue the intent is supposed to be anything other than lovey-dovey romantic but i had to dig into page 5 of mini-booklet in a goddamn compilation album to find it and this is the only evidence they did anything other than vaguely acknowledge each other in the field.

it seems people just kind of hooked them together. and i can get that. i've got weirder ships. there's a couple reasons you could say why. you could be a sarcastic shit and say it's because they're a male and a female in a 90s anime and so get hooked by a red string of fate as soon as they look at each other because people had no idea how interacting with people work. or you could write better than capcom and say iris being emotionally tied to both zero and colonel, instead of just being related to colonel and hoping zero-senpai notices her new breastplate, is what forces her to get involved as an in-between rather than just jumping ship to be with repliforce from the getgo. or you could just say they're cute, in which case, yeah, that's cool

but the point that i am laboriously reaching around to make is that this is a consistent pattern with zero throughout the series. zero/iris is the most prominent of a companion bob capcom has pushed for him and he barely acknowledges she exists. you have to really dig for any indication that they're together. zero/layer comes next, but if you look over their interactions, she's just making anime girl blushing noises and zero has no clue what the fuck she's doing. is she overheating? zero/ferham? he wants to stab her. zero/leviathan? he also wants to stab her. zero/ciel? maybe if his preferred way of responding to a 12-year-old girl wasn't with "............" and i see you xzero shippers in the background, rubbing your hands and cackling and thinking you're getting off scot-free. zero's second favorite way of socializing with x is bailing on him. first favorite is attempting to stab him as well.

the dude is spaghettiman virgin prime, a buzzsaw with only two modes: "KILL" and "maybe don't kill". an intimate relationship? he's got a computer brain and he still doesn't even know what that means. a relationship is what you have when you fight someone, right? he's as smooth as a cactus rolling through a sandpaper factory. he's as suave as a can of worms used in spear-fishing. if you showed him a picture of sex, he'd think it was two humans attempting to strangle each other. the man installed titties on himself and he's still never touched a single one. and then he lost them in the future, so he's operating at a net titty-touching loss, which is honestly quite an impressive feat.
