Don't they know how to make kdramas anymore? I'm watching" King The Land" and although it's really pleasant, way better than almost of recent romcoms, it's not fairytale-ish anymore. Older kdramas had a spark. For example," you've fallen for me" didn't depict any chaebols , but had something. Or "Cinderella and the four Knights " .

Ok this is a long rambling answer anon :P

I have a lot of conflicting thoughts about King the Land but as you mentioned, it has a lot to offer in the way of cuteness and fluff. My brain knows it lacks key features that could really make it an amazing drama but it's definitely not BAD. Maybe when I organize my thoughts I can describe what exactly isn't working for me in this drama (it's definitely NOT junho in a suit ok?).

I know what you're saying about more recent rom coms lacking the "spark" the older dramas had but THINK about what we've gained!

Chaebols who recognize imbalances of power (thank You Why Secretary Kim and well...King The Land!), Ladies who are actually CAPABLE of 100% more than the men they fall for and well, the kisses are so much better than the older dramas too!

In some ways you really can't have dramas like Boys Over Flowers or King 2 Hearts now because the "romance" would hit differently. And there's a definite slump in straight up fluff rom coms with the rich guy set up. But in a lot of ways, the newer set ups show growth I think.

Also more recently we have The Business Proposal (2022), (2021), Her Private Life, (2021), Touch Your Heart (2021) etc that are all solid rom coms imo.

In the meantime if you want a rom com from 2022 2023, I recommend Semantic error and Our Dating Sim! They're bls, but they really follow a lot of cute fluffy traditional rom com vibes you might like??

Sorry for this long answer that didn't really have a cohesive train of thought. Yes, there's a rom com fluff slump for sure but I've seen so many great romance dramas in the past few years so... I'm confused now lol.

So it’s your typical cliché classic romcom with a certain flair to it with a stellar cast. Unfortunately, it does suffer like most dramas do nowadays. It starts out excellent and starts to decline towards the end. I suppose the writers wanted to draw it out more creating more unnecessary angst. Granted I do love angst to my dramas, but when it is inserted towards the end, especially the last two episodes (everything seemed way too bloated in the last one) I tend to get grumpy. Nevertheless the romcom still feels classic, it just depends on how you watch it.

Perfect Marriage Revenge, ep 8

The one thing that shines through in this episode is just how Yi Joo is blossoming. Freed from her family's cruelty and oppression and with the love and support of Do Guk (and his mom and grandma), she's finding out who she truly is. As she gains confidence, she's becoming more sociable, personable and assertive. I suspect she's always be somewhat reserved, but she's no longer the doormat who faded into the background.

Look at her eating the food her teacher made and recognizing that she must have huge trust in her because the only other person's food she eats is Do Guk's. Also, we all agree that that her teacher is her mom right? Very curious to hear her story. And even if she turns out not to be her mom, she's made a friend. Yi Goo is so pleased and surprised to know that her teacher considers her a friend.

I love that Yi Joo is recognizing that she does care for Do Guk. It's one thing for her to want to learn to cook so she can feed Do Guk but she includes his mother and grandmother in that. It means she considers them part of her home. Grandma is shrewd woman who very specifically built homes for people. She knows that Do Guk never found his home until Yi Joo, just as she knows that Yi Joo is finding her home with Do Guk. Now I suspect she thinks the two of them are idiots who cannot fully see their feelings for one another (she knows they are in love) but that is for Yi Joo and Do Guk to figure out.

Yi Joo and Do Guk are more comfortable with one another at home. He can't eat unless he knows she's eaten. He's able to hug her and she doesn't flinch. She's all smiles with him. But what about the sex?

It must have been so crushing for Yi Joo to lose that housekeeper, who clearly adored her. I do hope that Yi Joo and the secretary are being careful.

I knew that Se Hyeok was going to be the weak link. I guess at least he finally apologized and admitted why he wanted to marry Yi Joo. Still it lead to him leaking the text messages and giving the interview to clear Yi Joo. The fact that Do Guk did it at the board meeting to drag down Jung Wook is chef's kiss.

Speaking of Jung Wook, the look on his face when he realized that there was a video of what actually happened and that his lies will be exposed. He went real quick from saying "you threw me overboard 20 years ago" to "we don't need to watch it because it's 20 years in the past". And please, why is Do Guk's mom so worried that grandma broke the phone? Surely that is not the ONLY copy of the video they had.

I like that Jung Hye was able to manipulate getting the shares or stopping the grandfather from giving them to Yi Joo. Yi Joo and Do Guk can't win over her every time. Whomever the man is beside Jung Hye, I think he's Yoo Ra's bio dad. I have no reason to think this but I do.

Can you recommend like a fun, silly, summery drama? I'm looking for similar vibes as Cheer Up or Age of Youth (female friendships are a plus). It's hard to find something without melodrama.

First off, I LOVE your user icon! (- ‿◦ )

And I definitely want to help you find something silly and easy to watch, especially as we enter the depths of winter! Some of these are a little less slice of life but still fun. Also I know you already watched/mentioned a couple of these but I'm adding them to the list for everyone else who might be game!

Light Hearted Fun K-dramas (little or no melo)

Soundtrack #1 (slice of life/romance) Best friends for almost 20 years, the two leads start having feelings for one another while working on a project. This drama only has a few episodes which is a shame because it's really cute! As a Park Hyung Sik Stan (sorry but Happiness broke me), he's great in this one and he hasn't lost all of his military weight yet which I LOVE :D

Fanletter Please! (slice of life/ romance) A sick child writes fan letters to her favorite star, an actress who for kdrama reasons is afraid of fan letters. This was a super sweet, short drama - I really liked it so much!

Into The Ring (workplace/romcom): The perfect slice-of-life rom com! Goo Se Ra has trouble holding down a job due to her passionate personality so after she loses her latest job working for the ML, she decides to run for a small government office position because it pays a salary. Literally she does it for the money which is just *chef’s kiss.* The show is about her dealing with local politics and it’s SO FUNNY and smart and the OTP is the best! 

King The Land (rom/com): A cold chaebol hotel owner meets his match (literally and figuratively) who is a top notch employee. There's a lot of push pull and the ML (MY BIAS!) Lee Junho's character falls hard and fast. It does have slow moments but if you literally want to watch a happy couple be happy (plus the skinship is chef's kiss and there is so much of it) you'll enjoy this one.

Melo Is My Nature (slice of life): This drama is by far my favorite slice-of-life drama of 2019. Found family, strong and complex characters, I laughed, I cried. Plus a gay character that’s an actual character, with the gay as a casual side note (classy k-drama!!) It was just a perfect show for me. There’s romance, but all of the stories are super interesting.

Top Management (slice of life) I know this show is mainly on Youtube Premium BUT I just got an email from Youtube basically saying “hey we know you never want to pay to watch our shows so we’re just going to let you ok?” so that’s something… Adorable mini drama about a girl who can see the future and becomes the rookie manager for a kpop band. Fun and easy.

Business Proposal (rom/com) Seriously this drama is almost the exact same plot as The Secret Life of My Secretary. It's really fun and cute (just like the latter) and if you like one, you'll like the other ;-)

True To Love / Bo Rah Deborah (rom/com) Bo Rah is a relationship expert publishing her book. She works with a man who is her total opposite making it a cute enemies to lovers. Yoo in Ah is literally so adorable I love watching her! (If I'm honest I can't remember a TON about this drama but I do remember it being an easy watch).

Her Private Life (romcom): Park Min Young really knows how to pick dramas. I loved this one about a museum curator who is secretly a fangirl obsessed with an idol. It’s fun and fluffy but does have a very mild childhood trauma thing with his mother but I mean, 99% of dramas like this do? If you like this one, Touch Your Heart and Why Secretary Kim are by the same person and have similar vibes.

Touch Your Heart (rom/com) A sweet, silly and very mild rom com about a serious boss and his hallyu star secretary. This show was an obvious response to the chemistry that Lee Dong Wook and Yoo In Na had in Goblin so it was nice to see them together again. Yoo In Na is such a fun person to watch!

Fight for My Way (slice of life/romcom): I love this drama! Always a fave for me, this drama is funny and heartwarming! The leading lady is a strong female which I LOVE, and Park Seo Joon plays her really cute down to earth best friend. It’s a childhood friends to lovers trope with a group of regular people (no rich heirs in this show!) and has a happy ending and a lot of cute flirting, cuddling and kissing. Argh I love these two!

Age of Youth 1 (slice of life): Age of Youth/ Hello My Twenties is one of the best k-dramas that centers around strong female friendships. A group of wildly different girls find themselves rooming together in an apartment. Lots of romance too, but the girl’s lives and friendships are the primary focus.

Shopping King Louie (romcom): Ridiculously fun and lighthearted romp following a spoiled and useless chaebol with amnesia who is being taken care of by a country bumpkin in the city. Very low stakes, super adorable couple, and as many tropes as you can fit in your bag, this one is one of my favorites to recommend.

Eulachacha Waikiki / Laughter In Waikiki (slice of life comedy, romance) I hope you’re ready for a crazy amount of unlikely situations and nutty hijinks because this show is probably one the most silly ones I’ve ever watched. It follows a group of friends who own a hostel so it’s a slice of life drama. At certain points I was like “this is TOO silly” but I’m glad I stuck with it cause it was so hilarious. Plus, the baby is a star!

Wok of Love (rom/com) Despite the fact that the show was shortened by two episodes because of sports, this drama is a funny and quirky show worth watching. Many people dropped it because it was SO crazy for the first couple of episodes (it has a talking horse people!), but it does settle into a really sweet and fun story about a chef, a gangster and a rich girl and her family. If you love food, this show is for YOU!

And finally, if you don't mind a bit of melo, I highly recommend Run On!

I decided to 1) keep this to Asian drama characters only because that is the focus of this blog and also the list gets way too long if include western shows too; 2) force myself to choose only one character for each show which you should know truly pained me in some instances.

So, in no particular order:

Lan Wangji - MDZS/The Untamed

If you can see my icon, this one can’t be a surprise. I’m a total sucker for an emotionally repressed but utterly loyal and devoted character, and bonus points if their communication style is so subtle that a tiny facial twitch can send me into conniptions. Lan Wangji was created in a lab for me, basically.

Kakei Shiro - Kinou nani tabeta

New favorite coming in hot! But see what I said above about emotional repression mixed with devotion? Yeah. YEAH. I am obsessed with the way this man draws mental boundaries to self-regulate his emotions and protect himself. And the moments when his depth of feeling breaks through are just *chefs kiss*. I lost my shit every time he let one of these smiles loose.

Teh - I Told Sunset About You

And now for something completely different! Teh has never repressed an emotion in his life and I love that for him. This is one of the messiest characters I have ever loved with my whole entire heart. He loves deeply and obsessively, he is passionate and mercurial in the extreme, and he is just as likely to crush you as he is to make your heart soar. In the category of emotional intensity he is unbeatable.

Yoon Sae Bom - Happiness

I LOVE THIS WOMAN. She is just as likely to patiently listen and give you devastatingly accurate life advice as she is to get frustrated and push you off a building. She’ll keep you guessing but she always has your back. She cares for children, the elderly, and gentle weirdos but she has no patience for assholes engaging in tomfoolery. And if anyone needs a good ass kicking she is always ready and willing.

Xiao Qi - Monarch Industry

Now that we’re talking about ass kicking, I would be remiss not to mention this man. An absolute king of Getting Shit Done. He is walking competence porn. He commands entire armies on his strength of character alone, and at the same time he is thoroughly kind and patient with his loved ones. His moral clarity never wavers. He is loyal to the core and if you’re one of his people he will protect you and give you so many chances to do the right thing. And if you’re in a bind you can bet he’s gonna show up at exactly the right moment to help. I want to be him when I grow up.

Lee Ik Jun - Hospital Playlist

Swoon. A talented surgeon, a loving father, a devoted friend, a patient lover, an all star vocalist, an actual comedian. What a man. #1 on the if I ever entertained the idea of marrying a man list.

Choi Yuna - Semantic Error

Still swooning over here. #1 on the if only I was into women list. She just oozes cool in every direction. She is a loyal friend but she will absolutely mock you when you deserve it. She clearly has her shit together and knows how to fix yours, too.

Choi Taek - Reply 1988

Taekie is all about the contradictions. He’s a loner genius but also a devoted friend and loving son. A total sweetheart with seemingly zero social skills who will suddenly shock you by being a bold closer when it comes to romance. A deeply wounded lost little boy but also A Man when and where it counts. PROTECT HIM AT ALL COSTS.

Tian - Khun Chai

He’s just so good, y’all. One of the kindest characters I have ever encountered in fiction. Truly a cinnamon roll, too good and too pure for this world. Wants nothing more from life than to stay in the country with his boyfriend and adopted children reading and writing and occasionally visiting with his fam.

Goo Se Ra - Into the Ring

Listen this woman is absolutely unhinged. Ran for office for the money. Couldn’t care less about your dumb little power struggles but will absolutely blow shit up if it helps her get ahead. All the fervor of Leslie Knope with none of the competence. I’m obsessed with her.
