how about drawing a red-breasted nuthatch? they're one of my favorite birds!
day 21
today's bird is the red-breasted nuthatch!
- nuthatches are sometimes called the "upside down bird", as they can be observed climbing headfirst down trees to look for food
- the red-breasted nuthatch collects resin globules from coniferous trees and plasters them around the entrance of its nest hole. it either collects it on its beak or uses little pieces of bark as a plate and applicator. the resin helps keep out predators and competitors! we ❤️ cavity nesters
- red-breasted nuthatches are pilfery little stealy stealy thieves <3 they sometimes steal nest-lining material from other birds
but I am having a good weekend with very little work for a change. I got some knitting and watching tv done, which I usually do not have a lot of time for. I have had to wear socks for the last two days, it has gotten cooler. And things are slow in the yard. But there are some new visitors. The Red-breasted Nuthatches are here, and I am so happy because they are a complete delight. They sound like little beat boxes and have little to no fear of humans. I walked up to feeders earlier today and just watched with a big grin how they were watching me, doing their noises. A perfectly wonderful bird to cure the little void birdwatchers feel after the summer frenzy.
On the rainy morning of Thursday, 9 June 2022, Amanda and I met our friend Ryan at the Woodlawn Cemetery to wander the grounds and look for birds. Among the birds we saw, was a red-breasted nuthatch! It was hanging around a tree with a hole in it, that I guessed might have a nest in it...?
