Double Bill: Years Where A Director Made Multiple Movies - Part 1
It doesn’t happen very often, but every now and again, a film director releases multiple films in a singular year. Whilst sometimes it can be as simple as a film being held back for a period of time, other times it can be an example of a director having an amazingly productive year (yes, a slight sound of envy there). Curious about how often it happens, I decided to look back at some favourite directors and their release periods, quickly finding a surprising list of examples.
Because of that, I thought I’d do a couple of articles naming some examples, how both films performed and the comparisons between the two. They may also be a good opportunity for some unique movie marathon sessions?
Tumblr media
One of the first I found was an Oliver Stone double bill from 1986, with James Woods starring in Salvador as an American photojournalist covering the Salvadoran Civil War, and Charlie Sheen in the classic Platoon, a near-autobiographical depiction of the Vietnam war as inspired by Stone’s own experiences. The two movies do have similarities in terms of focusing on an outsider trying to survive in a foreign war, Woods’ journalist more experienced in comparison to Sheen’s novice soldier. Interestingly, both films were a struggle to get made until Stone met British film producer John Daly, who agreed to finance both.
Salvador was commercially unsuccessful yet netted Woods an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, and Best Screenplay for Stone and Richard Boyle, but paled in comparison to Platoon, where it was a critical and financial success, with Academy Award nominations for Best Cinematography, Best Screenplay again (this time solo for Stone), and Best Supporting Actor for both Willem Dafoe and Tom Berenger, and victories for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Sound. As a double bill, they offer fascinating depictions of introduction to foreign war, and are unflinching in the true horrors that exist.
Tumblr media
Thirteen years later, Joel Schumacher was recovering from the critical bashing of Batman and Robin, and attempted a double bill comeback in 1999. The first was a Nicholas Cage-starring crime thriller called 8MM, and the second was a surprisingly smaller character based drama called Flawless, which featured Robert De Niro and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
The interesting element was the realisation that despite the issues with Batman and Robin, Schumacher still had the ability to interest two of the bigger dramatically respected actors in the world at the time. Both films put the focus on the actors, with Cage a classic noir private investigator, while De Niro played a security guard dealing with a stroke, demonstrating his tough man style with a vulnerability from his conversations with drag queen Rusty, played by Hoffman.
These two films seem an interesting double bill to watch when taking into consideration Batman and Robin, as both films are scaled back in comparison and demonstrate Schumacher’s ability with actors.
Tumblr media
Finally, we have Sidney Lumet, one of the most respected film directors of the last hundred years and his work from 1973. That year, Lumet directed two films that focused on police officers but from two different perspectives. The first is the British-based The Offence, while the second is the American-based Serpico.
The latter is the better known of the films, focusing on the real life tale of New York city based undercover police officer Frank Serpico, played by Al Pacino and dealing with the corrupt actions of his colleagues, eventually testifying against them. A widescale Crime Drama, Serpico is remembered for over 100 speaking parts and locations, as well as encompassing eleven years during Serpico’s time with the police force.
In comparison, The Offence is a much smaller and more intimate piece, focusing on interviews / interrogations between Sean Connery’s detective Johnson and his wife Maureen, Detective Superintendent Cartwright, and suspected child molester Kenneth Baxter. Despite both films dealing with the main character struggling with the world they inhabit, The Offence focuses more on a character committing a crime whereas Serpico revolves around an incorruptible hero.
However, what both films achieve are some of the best performances from both actors. This was one of Connery’s first major roles after finishing with the James Bond role, demonstrating a depth he rarely got to exhibit, while Pacino won a Golden Globe for his subtly intense somberness. Lumet was regularly credited for bringing out some actors best performances, so this double bill offers a fascinating depiction of the complex emotions for police officers.

I was thinking about Discworld couples for a Discworld group chats Valentine's ship fest, and I've noticed a sort of running theme among the couples Terry Pratchett writes. Much to think about....
Bonus times ot3 because they technically aren't canon but also I couldn't NOT include them

Manchester United Squad Thoughts - Goalkeepers
Tumblr media
On the 3rd September, above was the confirmed squad and numbers for the players. Now at the halfway point of the season, who has seemingly cemented themselves as Ten Haag player, and who is likely to be moved on, whether in January or the end of the season.
First of all, who would stay and who would leave is predominantly inspired by Ten Haag’s chosen formation and tactics. His formations of choice seem to be 4-3-3, with 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3 as alternative formations. However, they all rely upon a hard working team who close down opposition, run more than their opponents (look at Brentford as an example), play progressive forward passing (including the defenders and goalkeeper), stretch the pitch with fullbacks and utilise wingers that cut in. Obviously there’s a lot more to it than that simple description, but there are tactical gurus much better equipped than I. Mainly, we are using these descriptions as the basis of who is staying and who will be moved on.
Tumblr media
Goalkeeper:
David De Gea - his contract currently runs out at the end of the 2023 season, with an option for a further year. De Gea has worked hard to improve his passing and distribution to fit better within the Ten Haag tactics. He’s always been a better shot stopper, and there is a difference in that for the first time in a while, he has a competent defence in front of him. He’s likely to stay at least until the end of 2023, but if he is going to continue beyond that, it may not be as first choice, which will mean a significant wage cut from his current £375k a week. If he doesn’t cut his wages down, then I can see his contract running out at the end of 2023 and leaving on a free, with the love and appreciation of the fans. STAYING.
Martin Dubravka - not seen enough to make an informed decision, but his loan is meant to run out at the end of the season. He’s played in the EFL Cup so far, and seemed okay, but nothing impressive. He has a reputation as a Sweeper Keeper from his work at Newcastle, but at the age of 33 years old, he is unlikely to be the first choice keeper long term (unless he turns into Edwin Van Der Sar). Considering the below two and De Gea’s long term future, Dubravka may be kept as our long term back-up, our new Sergio Romero, who was essential for making sure our first choice goalkeeper never took it easy. STAYING (Back-Up)
Tom Heaton - after Henderson left, it seemed a chance for Tom Heaton, only for Dubravka to be brought in instead. The likelihood of Ten Haag to use Heaton is almost miniscule, he’s a definite third choice, and will be 37 years old when his contract expires end of this season. If Ten Haag is looking to change the mentality, I don’t see him keeping Heaton beyond this season. GONE.
Dean Henderson - currently on loan at Nottingham Forest (who are 18th), his interview earlier this season about broken promises by United and how he forced through a loan as he didn’t want Ten Haag to see him in training as he would inevitably pick him was massively insulting. Last season he got COVID at the beginning of the season, so De Gea was chosen to play and he performed brilliantly, so why would Ole drop a performing De Gea for Henderson? His petulance makes him look very immature, and when we can get better players with less of an ego, I have no interest in him coming back. Rather than have to deal with him causing issues, seems more likely he will be sold end of the season and Ten Haag can buy a goalkeeper that suits his wants and needs. GONE.
For the rest of the season, it seems likely that we will keep the goalkeeper position as is, get rid of Henderson and Heaton, and then look for a new first choice goalkeeper long term with De Gea or Dubravka as back-up depending on contracts. Long term goalkeeper replacements will probably be looked at closer to the end of the season, but the current favourite seems to be FC Porto’s Diogo Costa, a twenty-three year old with a great reputation, and a buy-out clause of £65 million, which isn’t impossible.
Personally, I’d be curious to see what would happen if we put a bid in for Marc-Andre Ter-Stegen, who at 30 years old still has several years at the top, has proven himself a sweeper-keeper in the guise that Ten Haag wants, and is an option for Barcelona who are currently desperate for money considering they have dropped down to the Europa League. Mid season swap for De Gea and Ter-Stegen maybe?

Notes :
all links lead to the goodreads page of the book, mostly because i like to look at book cover art ;
list features authors/books that i love (T. Kingfisher, Silvia Moreno-Garcia, Ursula K. Le Guin, the collections from the British Library Tales of the Weird, etc.), but also a few that i don't like and some that i have not yet read ;
if upon seeing that list the first novel you check out is by Stephen King's you have not understood the assignment ;
not all of those are strictly horror stories, some are 100% science fiction (Brian W. Aldiss' Hothouse for instance).

Tiffany Aching, at forty years old, with three children (two daughters and a son, the first named Emma and the second Emily and the third named Peter but is known as "Robbie" by everyone else) is feeling rather relieved that none of her children want to follow in her footsteps and instead in their father's, who now has a whole lot of letters after his name and is in charge of the Chalk's first hospital.
(It's a small hospital, but it has a whole wing just for the elderly folks who can't look after themselves at home too well and require lengthier care. They go home twice a week with trainee doctors and nurses or with trainee witches, so that the old people know they haven't been turned out of their homes, and the flowers have been watered and the pets fed.
Tiffany had insisted on it and Preston knew better than to tell his wife that it was too much trouble.)
They have a good arrangement. Every few months Preston has to go to the city to pick up new medicines and other... medical supplies... from the Guild of Igors, and Tiffany usually gives him a ride on the broomstick. In the city, she's known as Doctor Preston's wife. They pay visits to senior doctors and always, always call on Lady Sybil, because Preston had impressed her with his neat sutures years ago when young lord Sam Vimes cut open his leg while climbing a wall to get to a stranded cat. The duke Sir Samuel Vimes is about as friendly as a rock, but Tiffany likes him even so. He reminds her of Granny.
When Preston's back home, however, he's Missus Tiffany's husband, and the "missus" is at the insistence of Tiffany, who is very very proud of her husband with the letters behind his name. And he makes sure that trainee witches and doctors and nurses are taught basic medical skills together, because he knows better than anyone that witches will need to do a lot more healing out there than the staff in his hospital.

I will say, while I wish we got even more development for her, Keiko Randa is one of my very favorite Monsterverse characters now alongside Lee Shaw, Preston Packard (Samuel L. Jackson in K:SI), and Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Herny in GvsK). Mari Yamamoto has incredible presence and gravitas in her performance that makes her memorable even when the script could be giving her more to work with.
