I don't want to write a full blown theory about this, but maybe Ithelia is why Darien has an axe in that promo art. She is the prince of paths and the unfollowed road. Darien did say in his final letter that if we ever met him again, he probably wouldn't be the same.
In his last letter,Words of the fallen, he writes:
"Perhaps we'll see each other again, in another place, another time. I probably won't be the version of myself that's writing these words, though. That me will be gone. I can live with that."
I could be onto something or I could be completely wrong, who knows? I just hope that if I'm right, some part of him remembers us and it's not some alternate version of him where we never met.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Necrom - Post Tracing Shadows quest It's time we finally talk about what happened. As much as it pains me to revisit the events of the past and of.. Veya.. We need to do this. I.. need to do this. Find me in Necrom's tavern. There are too many prying ears here.

ah yes, nothing quite sets the mood to having a serious conversation with Naryu about Veya more than her glitching between standing up and sitting down in between sentences. 10/10 gaming experience. also the player’s responses were so fucking bad i’m sorry.

I just finished the Deadlands DLC last night, having just finished the Blackwood Chapter a few nights prior.
What a return.
The Deadlands DLC has possibly the best final boss I have ever encountered in ESO. I couldn't believe how awesome the climax to that DLC was, how great the characters were, the story from Blackwood into Deadlands was super interesting, and intimidating villains, yes! I was so invested throughout the entire DLC.
Now Blackwood definitely still had some issues.
I didn't like how they tried to portray the Dark Brotherhood with a sense of honor. Literally to get into the guild in the same game you have to randomly murder, and its obvious the members randomly murder. In canon, Lucien LaChance literally encourages you to find a random stranger for "practice". So as happy as I was to see Elam, his actions didn't make sense and it didn't make sense for him to pop in later either. Now it would be cool if he was a conditional pop in, like he only returns because you are currently in or have finished the Dark Brotherhood questline, so he feels obligated to help you, dreadbrother to dreadbrother.
The Companions, in my opinion, are boring. At least in this Chapter. I didn't use any for my playthrough- Trechire works best solo. I did give them a shot with my other characters but unless I wasn't able to summon animals or daedra to assist me, they really weren't a game changer or endearing to me. So all the hype for them kinda blew up in my face.
But on a whole, this was a total return to form for ESO. I am seriously going to be paying attention to sales for High Isle, because this previous DLC gave me hope again. I still will not pay full price, I'm not completely trusting yet, but I will be keeping an eye out for a good sale when I'm able to spare the money.

WIP Wednesday (Finally)
Finally taking a moment to actually share a WIP after completely falling out of the practice for nearly two months lmao
Thanks so much for everyone who has tagged me in the interim, I'm probably missing a few but thank you to and I also tag @mareenavee @paraparadigm @saltymaplesyrup @ladytanithia @throughtrialbyfire @kookaburra1701 @skyrim-forever @boethiahspillowbook @friend-of-giants @elfinismsarts @wildhexe @viss-and-pinegar
Here's a snippet from the upcoming chapter of Halfway to the Sky (Chapter 23), in which Aiden and Gelebor have a moment to chat. No spoilers for those who haven't made it this far, aside from just "yes, they meet Gelebor eventually" lol:
Gelebor tapped the wooden ladle against the cooking pot before covering it with a lid. The sound echoed through the room like a struck bell. He then stepped over to gingerly sit in one of the other chairs by the fire, moving slowly as if he thought Aiden might startle. “You are a devotee of Auriel, are you not?” Aiden looked up, forcing himself to meet Gelebor’s piercing blue eyes. “Yes. As much as any proper son of Summerset should be.” Gelebor’s smile was a disarming thing. “By all accounts I am thousands of years old, but I have hardly felt a single year passing. Life outside of the Vale might as well be a realm of Oblivion compared to the world that I once knew. But Auriel has blessed me in this way—removed me from the flow of time as it continues to ravage the world around me. I would have surely gone mad otherwise.” Aiden could only nod, his gaze sliding to focus on the crease of Gelebor’s knuckles where his hands rested against his knees. He supposed he hadn’t considered the implications of what living for so long, especially in isolation, might do to one’s mind.   “And so, in removing me from the flow of time, Auriel has shown me the truth in such things. Your anxieties, these ‘what ifs’ that haunt you… they are rooted in an understanding of time as something that has a ‘correct’ path. There is no future that you have robbed Sarel of, nor is there any past that could be different from what it has already been. There is only what exists here. Now. Past and future do not exist, not in the way that we think they do. By languishing in the way that you do, you rob only yourself of the present moment.” Aiden swallowed around the knot in his throat, straightening his back. “So… you’re saying I should—?” “I am not saying you should do anything, Aiden.”

After reading @99corentine 49th chapter, I thought about a lot of references about Chry's past. There will be spoilers about KFP2, Blue Eye Samurai and the fic GOL HAH DOV, but mind you : if a piece of media isn't enjoyable because you got spoiled, then maybe it isn't well made (unless it's an Agatha Christie but the whole point of her novels was the mystery) so bear with me.
In chapter 49, Chry wants to know about his past after a strange and stressful encounter with Elenwen. He tries to return to the place where he first awoke, one year before the events of this chapter, but without any success. He upset for several things, for his loss of memory of course but also the fact that he might have a family and even a spouse (with his ring at the marriage finger) that didn't go after him.
Firstly, there's the feeling of emptiness and shame about his worthlessness, how he compares himself to Miraak, someone who was important even as a pawn of Hermaeus Mora, when he was just good enough to be left behind by his supposed relatives and be used as a thrall by a cruel man in a foreign country. Chry feels like that all the glory he had in one year, even after killing Alduin, was nothing, like a fraud, that he's just worthless (these thoughts happens just when he has the post prophecy blues, like Teldryn said, so yeah Chry might feel depressed). That his past is was he is at core. Which isn't true but he believes it and that's something a lot of us can relate to (golden child syndrome, school failure, broken dreams, childhood trauma, etc.).
Fortunately, Miraak reminds him that Chry was the one who believed he could be a better version of himself, going to tyrant to leader (even though he still is at the head of a cult lmao), that his actions helped and saved so many people and that he's a great hypocrite for telling others they can be better when he tell himself the contrary.
It reminds us ofc of Paarthunax's iconic wise words "What is better ? To be born good or to overcome your evil nature though great efforts?" But I feel it echoes better to Miraak's case because he was in fact evil and became a bit more grayer thought the story, whereas Chry has forgotten his past and was just lost and miserable. In this case I was reminded of this sentence in Kung Fu Panda 2 : when Po discovers the calcined remains of his childhood village (that he forgot about because of PTSD), he's feeling sad and ashamed that his birth was in bloodshed and suffering, but the soothsayer who saved him says to him "Your story may have not such a happy beginning, but it doesn't make you who you are. It is the rest of your story. Who you choose to be." And that's pretty much Chry's case : he awoke in a place of suffering and when he left, he wanted to have a life of his own and to be greater than what he was before, to be in control. Man the parallels between him and Miraak are even greater ksjsjsks
Then let's return to the family problem. Even better (or worse idk), the spouse problem. If Chry had any family left in the Summerset Isles, they didn't care to go after him when he was gone missing.
There are several theories about why Chry wasn't found, if he ever had relatives : the first thing is that he's of mixed heritage because he has a greater physical strength than all the other altmer altogether and most importantly striking blue eyes ; altmer people don't have blue eyes* and it's a great deal for almost every Alinor citizens to be of pure lineage, so imagine having in your family a very unusual child with characteristics a little bit too close to Nords'. You just want to get rid of it to avoid shame on your family.
(*nota bene : in Skyrim game, altmer people only can have amber, golden or emerald eyes, whereas in ESO you can have them have blue eyes, but we're following Skyrim's logic here)
So if we follow this theory, Chry's supposed family wanted to get rid of this problematic scion, either by banishment... or marriage. A marriage that didn't go well at some point. And that's when I got reminded of Blue Eye Samurai (incredible series on Netflix, go watch it). Some context : in the Edo period (17th century in Japan), we follow the revenge journey of Mizu, a lonely samurai with mixed heritage (a Japanese mother and an unknown white father) with striking blue eyes. These eyes disgraced them because it was considered demonic at this time in Japan (like in ancient Greece, blue eyes were either vulgar or bad omens).
At some point in their story, Mizu finds their mother who they thought died years ago in a fire. She wants them to marry an old samurai who, like them, is a castaway, so they can in some way redeem themselves for their shameful life and at least be a good bride. They get married and although Mizu is a bit reluctant at first (because of how are viewed their eyes), them and the samurai fall in love with each other and have lovely years together as an odd couple. But it falls apart when Mizu wants to show their incredible battle skills to their husband, who gets scared and angry, calling them a monster, because deep down he still had this bias that blue eyes are demonic and bringer of destruction (an onryo). That he only loved Mizu because they were behaving despite their mixed heritage.
He betrays them, bringing mercenaries to kill them and Mizu, deeply hurt and enraged, kills everyone and run away to pursue their revenge of getting rid of the four white men who lives secretly in Japan. But I digress
Maybe something similar happened to Chry, that when he discovered his thu'um, he got shamed by his family/spouse and he went (or ran away) to Skyrim to search for answers or got abandoned here. Maybe we'll know and maybe we won't because there's still almost two chapters left for the fic to be finished and I am not well.
Anyway I had fun doing these parallels! Theories and psychanalyses my beloved.

You all know Darien is probably going to show up again at some point, correct? It's not just hope. ZoS has been sprinkling breadcrumbs (pun intended) since Summerset. They wouldn't do that for no reason or to tease us (unless they're somehow legitimately evil,which say what you want, but that isn't the case).
Spoilers galore for elder scrolls in general under the cut (Main plot, Wrothgar,Elsweyr,Greymoor,Summerset
Blackwood,High Isle, and Necrom.)
Just look at Coldharbor. What happened after we "lost" Darien. We found clues that he was still alive. Including a letter written by him in Wrothgar. So it only makes sense to me that they would do so again.
Darien and/or the events of Summerset have also been referenced in every.single.chapter since Summerset.
That, to my knowledge, hasn't happened with any other characters, especially not consecutively.
In Elsweyr, you can find a deceased khajiit, and nearby there is a note,describing how Meridia was looking for a new vessel that wouldn't betray her.
In Greymoor, Gabrielle Benele says she still believes that Darien is still out there somewhere and she is determined to find him. Not only that, but there is a Meridia quest where she has apparently turned her gaze from her faithful. Now Daedric princes' attention and favor can come and go, and I don't like Meridia, believe me, but she doesn't seem like the kind of prince that would turn her back if something bigger didn't have her attention.
In Blackwood, there is a random event when you talk to a wizard and he can summon a lost spirit. One of those spirits can be an Auroran Knight with Dawnbreaker in his hilt. It's not confirmed to be Darien. But...come on. It's him.
In High Isle, Lady Arabelle references his father specifically. Not Darien specifically, but there are other generals, and captains they could have referenced.They chose him because they knew our ears would perk up at the name "Gautier". His father had a pretty forgettable role,Darien,did not.
In Necrom, if you played through the Summerset plot, you can speak to Naryu about the events of Summerset.
I don't feel like they would talk about him (or the events of Summerset) this much if he wasn't coming back at some point or at least confirmed to be alive in some way. Not to mention whenever he's brought up in streams, they are pretty tight-lipped about him, and they've never specifically said he' won't return.
Summerset was a big event. So if we do see Darien again, it's going to be big.

was just ranting abt this in DMs but yeah I’ll yell abt it again here too. I fucking hate the fact they made Naryu into a liar re: Veya depending on player choice after writing NJ bc it makes no sense w/ her character, and even worse it can be fixed with one change.
I get that what they’re going for is the ‘Veya was so important to her she’s willing to break her own morals to keep her from harm’ angle, which is good in a vacuum and if you don’t have the context of NJ, but if you do even her own brother who she was close with wasn’t that important, and when given directive was able to do what needed to be done.
If Odral didn’t exist and/or their relationship was changed entirely from close siblings to colleagues like the rest of the secretives this wouldn’t be an issue!! this would be a fine character moment!! but because Odral exists in the way he does and bc Naryu pre-Balmora now has a set precedent that nothing comes before her duty, not even personal ties or feelings and yes, she’s willing to kill even the vestige if it comes to that one half of a fake player choice goes completely against her character!! aaarrrggghhhHHHHHHHHHH

A Fresh Start
Fandom: Elder Scrolls Online
Pairing: Romantic Darien Gautier x Fem!Vestige, Platonic Bastian Hallix x Fem!Vestige
Rating: T

Words: 1613
AN: This was supposed to be some headcanons for @lithiumrev but I forgot and I feel really bad so I turned it into something a bit more fleshed out. And then I kinda went out of control. :,) I hope you like it!! ❤
Major, MAJOR spoilers for the entirety of the Elder Scrolls Online game (specifically the DC storyline, "Main" storyline, Summerset DLC, and Blackwood DLC. Just spoilers galore.) Ye have been warned.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Losing Darien Gautier in the battle against Molag Bal was hard. It was nothing like King Dynar, who had been imprisoned for millenia and finally, *finally* had been set free. Even though he gave his life for the cause, his passing released him from Bal's torture and he was free to move on to Aetherius. Bittersweet, sure, but a fitting end for the noble king.
Darien, on the other hand, was a borderline tragedy. It should never have happened, it was a freak accident- if he hadn't stepped forward, if someone had grabbed his arm to pull him into the protective circle, if he had heard them calling his name...
*It should never have happened*, the Vestige kept telling herself. *Where did it go wrong?* The question rang over and over in her head like a twisted, gut-wrenching mantra.
In her grief-stricken state, she wracked her brains trying to come up with a reason. Any feasible reason was better than none. But none came to her.
For a few weeks after, the Vestige stayed at the Camlorn Inn, in the city where she first met Darien. It was all she could think of to heal her hurt heart. No matter how painful it may have been, it still helped to reminisce about him.
It was no secret the two had become quite close. Even General Gautier made a some jokes. Darien's relentless, shameless, and sometimes terrible attempts to flirt were rather endearing. It didn't take long before the Vestige had developed a soft spot for him. Neither would admit it out loud, lest their reputations be tarnished.
There were many nights where the two soldiers would stay up late talking. About the weather, about the cute dog spotted by the smithy, about their training, about the upcoming battles... And then the Vestige confided in Darien her own personal quest. Now Darien was known for exaggerating from time to time, so he was understandably skeptical at first. But the look on his dear friend's face told him she was telling the truth.
He ended up becoming her rock throughout the trials leading up to the battle with Molag Bal. Countless late nights of amicable chatter helped the heroes stay sane. One of those late night chatters lead to a shared glass of good Surile Syrah Wine and a chaste (but very reciprocated) kiss on the cheek.
The Hero of Daggerfall was practically walking on air for the rest of the week after that cheek peck.
And before anyone knew it, Darien was gone. Lost somewhere in the realms of Oblivion.
It took some time, but once the Vestige felt comfortable enough, she left Daggerfall altogether with the intent of never coming back. The resumed journey took her everywhere from the mountains of Wrothgar to the ashlands of Morrowind, even to the Clockwork City. Eventually, the opportunity to go to The Summerset Isles came up. The idea of nice sandy beaches and warm weather was a very appealing thought.
But there's no rest for the wicked, or for heroes. And before she knew it she was begrudgingly roped into yet another epic quest to fix something she hadn't broken.
To her surprise, not only did it involve more Daedra (including some spider daedra she did NOT like), she was greeted with a very, very familiar face.
"Well, this is awkward. You're probably wondering how your old friend Darien became Meridia's champion and got stuck in all this sticky webbing. It's a funny story, really."
It took every ounce of willpower in the Vetige's body to not launch herself into his arms. And once his senses started coming back to him, Darien had to resist the very same urges.
Every spare moment in between fighting the minions of Nocturnal and Clavicus Vile was spent together. In the tavern rooms, the bunks in the Mages Guild, their tents while out on the field... It didn't matter to either Darien or the Vestige, so long as they were with each other.
Unfortunately the couple's happiness was short lived; Dawnbreaker needed to be repaired before the balance between the Daedric Princes was upset. And being Meridia's champion, Darien was the only one who could do it. Before he did, he wrapped the Vetsige in his arms and pulled her into the most passionate kiss either had ever had.
All of the Vestige's effort put into healing herself was completely undone. And since then, the world just wasn't the same to her.
Surile Syrah Wine tasted sour. Papers and letters with shiny golden seals or ink caused her hopes to get up, only to be dashed moments later. Spiders filled her with fury. And despite the aid Meridia gave in the battle with Molag Bal, the Vestige couldn't find it in her to forgive the Lady of Light.
*~*
Time passes differently for the Vestige. The events that caused her to lose her beloved were some time ago. Days? Weeks? Months? Entire seasons? She couldn't quite tell. She found it quite easy to distract herself, though. Tamriel is a vast land, and there's no shortage of places to explore or people to help. Things seemed to be turning around for the Hero.
Until whispers on the streets mentioned another Daedric plot. The Vestige paid attention long enough to find out it was not Meridia, but in fact, Mehrunes Dagon. She was rather puzzled by this; the Lord of Destruction had been relatively quiet up until this point. Surely it was just a case of misunderstanding?
Which was her thought process until a mysterious letter from Lyranth arrived. And soon after, a personal (albeit testy) visit from the Daedra outcast. She confirmed the presence of Dagon, and the Vestige, who at this point had a bitter vendetta against the Daedric Princes, offered her assistance to find and close the Daedric portals.
Turns out you can't swing a dead Alfiq without hitting an Oblivion portal in Blackwood. One hint in particular lead her near a place called "Deepscorn Hollow". *That's not ominous in the slightest...* she thought to herself. With a name like that it just had to be crawling with Daedra spawn.
As she rounded a hill down the trail, however, the Vestige was surprised by a sudden "Hey! Hey, over here! I need some help!"
Her head whipped in the direction of the voice to see a young man in traveling leathers tied to a post. She wasted no time sprinting over to investigate.
"Thank the Eight Divines! I could really use some help. The name's Bastian. Watch yourself, friend. I was accosted by a Dark Elf at this very spot. She went into the cave over there hours ago, but she might return at any moment."
"What Dark Elf? What cave?" she answered, confused at the lack of any men or mer nearby.
"The Dark Elf Tenarei Vels. She's a traveler I met along the road. The cave is Deepscorn Hollow—the entrance is over by the dock," Bastian nodded in the general direction. "I'm here to retrieve a fellow named Quistley Silvelle. His family sent me to find him. I think he's in trouble."
The Vestige nodded, "What do you want from me?"
"Untie me, please. The Silvelles will pay well if you help me get Quistley out of whatever trouble he's in, and I could use someone to watch my back. Interested?"
An enthusiastic nod told him all he needed to know. As she started to work the chains, he added "Oh, and check the shack. I think Tenarei dropped something during our struggle."
"I'll see if the Dark Elf left any clues behind. And I'll help you rescue Quistley."
As he stood up, the Vestige got a better look at the young man; fiery red curls and deep emerald eyes, set in a thoroughly annoyed glare. On the tall side, too. Imperial, maybe?
"Ugh. Thank you," Bastian thanked her as he rubbed his sore wrists. "Look around, would you? I'd like to examine whatever my attacker dropped..."
It didn't take long to find out this was no ordinary rescue mission; a cult was involved. A Daedric cult, at that. And cults always mean extra trouble. And of course, it seems Quistley got himself into more trouble than originally thought. Bastian pinched the bridge of his nose and muttered something under his breath.
Thankfully the aforementioned Tenarei was more than willing to help out once the situation was explained. At the expense of an expensive ring, a deal was made: Quistley's debts were settled, Tenarei didnt have to leave empty handed, and the young Silvelle was hauled back home. Complaining and caterwauling the entire time, of course.
Bastian then surprised the Vestige by asking if he could tag along. His time being the Silvelle's lackey was over. "If you ever need a friend, you can count on me."
The Vestige, on the other hand, was a bit surprised. No one had ever offered their services to her, or to be a traveling companion. Usually they tagged along long enough to finish a rescue mission or borderline espionage adventures. After a moment's consideration, she accepted. Some company on the road would do her good.
*If you ever need a friend, you can count on me."*
Bastian's words kept crossing her mind. As she kept watch one night, she pondered the situation. Since she lost Darien, Bastian was like a breath of fresh air. A fresh start, as it were. Maybe some time down the line, she'd open up to him about her past. And, Divines willing, maybe he'd open up to her too. Maybe they could help each other.
She could see this becoming an amazing friendship.
Which Vestige Did What (my canon)
Okay so I'll be putting this on AO3 as a note on whichever chapter The Gang™ gets back together during, but here's my "canon" of who did what storyline in game.
Vestige Roster:
Eilíse (Daggerfall Covenant, “Breton” but really Reachman/Altmer mix, THE Vestige)
Caraelin (Aldmeri Dominion, Altmer/Bosmer)
Kalara (Ebonheart Pact but also an Arcanist, Dunmer)
My canon:
*spoilers for main story*
Eilíse did the Main Story and is The Vestige, but met Cara and Kalara during the Coldharbour storyline. All three of them can resurrect at will/are vestiges, but only Eilíse was involved in the prophecy and The Five Companions.
Cara was recruited while in The Moonless Walk (helped rescue King Dynar) and Kalara was recruited at The Great Shackle (helped rescue Vanus Galerion).
Cadwell’s Silver and Gold didn’t happen; each of them completed their respective alliance’s storyline and basically compared notes. Similar to the cinematic trailers, except none of them really care about the Three Banners War so this all excludes IC/any PvP.
Eilíse did every DLC storyline but was occasionally aided by either Cara and/or Kalara. I’ll use their initials to note who did what:
