@silverhart-makes-art (link to post here) has again given us a realistic-looking creature drawn in an impressive naturalistic style. It is distinctly skinny as the entry suggests, with a pointy beak for its stabbing behavior. The explanation linked in the above post notes that this design takes inspiration from the kiwi and the bittern, which makes sense and I think works well here. Cute little bastard, too -- look at him. I think it can hiding in reeds very well. (This one is in reeds currently. Or grass at least.)

@sweetlyfez (link to post here) notes that the blood thing is almost certainly a Biblical allegory, but she likes the idea that it's just a reinterpretation of natural red coloration. I agree -- it definitely is an allegory, as the Aberdeen Bestiary makes clear in the "interpretation" section I usually leave out of these:
Thus after three days, it revives its young with its blood, as Christ saves us, whom he has redeemed with his own blood.
... but I think I much prefer it as a fanciful interpretation of a natural feather pattern. Also, check out those Stylized Plants. I know I'm kind of a broken record about this, but over the course of this project, one thing I have learned about myself is that I am unaccountably delighted by Stylized Plants every time. These are thematically appropriate for a bird said to live in Egypt -- they look like they would fit right in with ancient Egyptian depictions of papyrus reeds or lotus flowers. Apologies to anyone who is tired of me pointing out the Stylized Plants at every opportunity; it will happen again.

@cheapsweets (link to post here) is clearly having some fun with these, based on the tone of their (detailed and interesting) post about the design and artistic process, please go read that. (Also thank you for including alt text.) Apparently they were informed by @coolest-capybara that their Rubkawat chicks resemble Woodstock from Peanuts, and... you know what? I see it. What I particularly like here is the decision to fill the nest with a cartoonishly large amount of blood -- I just find it charming in a way I can't articulate. Just... just hose those chicks down, that'll fix them.

@coolest-capybara (link to post here) never disappoints with her medieval stylization. I am delighted with the decision to make the Rubkawat a flamingo -- the linked post explains that this is inspired by flamingos having red crop milk, which is not something I know about because I am not a Bird Expert. I also really like the sequential-art style of the chicks at the bottom, so we can see them being resurrected by the blood. The one on the right makes me smile, because it looks very much like it's contemplating the blood on it and thinking, like, "...ew."

@pomrania (link to post here) is Tired of Birds, so they decided this one could be a dinosaur -- technically a bird, just not a modern one. I like it; dinosaurs are great. They've also taken the route of deciding the story about resurrecting chicks with blood is just a fanciful interpretation of red feathers, which I still like. (In the linked post, they explain their design decision and artistic process in detail, go look at it.) Also look at that little chick -- it's darling.
Pretty much everyone involved here said something along the lines of "I absolutely know what bird this is supposed to be because I've heard this myth before", which I suppose shouldn't be surprising. I don't know how widespread that particular bit of trivia is in the general population, but in the demographics of "people who follow this blog about medieval stuff" and/or "people who like playing with bestiary entries", I figure it's probably pretty well-known. So here's the Aberdeen Bestiary version:

Yes, this is the pelican.
The birds in the illumination don't particularly look like pelicans, though apparently one doesn't really find them in Western Europe, so I suppose that's to be expected. (Particularly since the entry doesn't describe their most identifiable physical feature, the beak / throat pouch arrangement.) The fact that pelicans are associated with Egypt and apparently don't really show up in most of Europe is surprising to me -- I grew up on the east coast of the U.S. and saw pelicans all the time, so I kind of just assumed they were common to other Atlantic coasts. But you know what they say about assuming.
Anyway, for anyone who didn't know about the story with the pelican and the blood, versions of this were pretty widespread in the medieval period. It was a sufficiently popular symbol that it found its way into heraldry -- the pelican in her piety is a heraldic device that shows the pelican wounding its own breast while standing over its young. (In some versions of the story, it feeds its young with the blood rather than using it to resurrect them.) Not only is it still present in surviving heraldry, but it also occasionally appears in more modern contexts, like the Louisiana state flag:

So let's get into the nitty-gritty technical details behind my latest project, the National Blue Trail round-trip search application available here:
This project has been fun with me learning a lot about plenty of technologies, including QGis, PostGIS, pgRouting, GTFS files, OpenLayers, OpenTripPlanner and Vita.
So let's start!
In most of my previous GIS projects I have always used custom made tools written in ruby or Javascript and never really tried any of the "proper" GIS tools, so it was a good opportunity for me to learn a bit of QGIS. I hoped I could do most of the work there, but soon realized it's not fully up to the job, so I had to extend the bits to other tools at the end. For most purposes I used QGis to import data from various sources, and export the results to PostGIS, then do the calculations in PostGIS, re-import the results from there and save them into GeoJSON. For this workflow QGIS was pretty okay to use. I also managed to use it for some minor editing as well.
I did really hope I could avoid PostGIS, and do all of the calculation inside QGIS, but its routing engine is both slow, and simply not designed for multiple uses. For example after importing the map of Hungary and trying to find a single route between two points it took around 10-15 minutes just to build the routing map, then a couple seconds to calculate the actual route. There is no way to save the routing map (at least I didn't find any that did not involve coding in Python), so if you want to calculate the routes again you had to wait the 10-15 minute of tree building once more. Since I had to calculate around 20.000 of routes at least, I quickly realized this will simply never work out.
I did find the QNEAT3 plugin which did allow one to do a N-M search of routes between two set of points, but it was both too slow and very disk space intense. It also calculated many more routes than needed, as you couldn't add a filter. In the end it took 23 hours for it to calculate the routes AND it created a temporary file of more than 300Gb in the process. After realizing I made a mistake in the input files I quickly realized I won't wait this time again and started looking at PostGIS + pgRouting instead.
Before we move over to them two very important lessons I learned in QGIS:
There is no auto-save. If you forget to save and then 2 hours later QGIS crashes for no reason then you have to restart your work
Any layer that is in editing mode is not getting saved when you press the save button. So even if you don't forget to save by pressing CTRL/CMD+S every 5 seconds like every sane person who used Adobe products ever in their lifetimes does, you will still lose your work two hours later when QGIS finally crashes if you did not exit the editing mode for all of the layers

So let's move on to PostGIS.
It's been a while since I last used PostGIS - it was around 11 years ago for a web based object tracking project - but it was fairly easy to get it going. Importing data from QGIS (more specifically pushing data from QGIS to PostGIS) was pretty convenient, so I could fill up the tables with the relevant points and lines quite easily. The only hard part was getting pgRouting working, mostly because there aren't any good tutorials on how to import OpenStreetMap data into it. I did find a blog post that used a freeware (not open source) tool to do this, and another project that seems dead (last update was 2 years ago) but at least it was open source, and actually worked well. You can find the scripts I used on the GitHub page's README.
Using pgRouting was okay - documentation is a bit hard to read as it's more of a specification, but I did find the relevant examples useful. It also supports both A* search (which is much quicker than plain Dijsktra on a 2D map) and searching between N*M points with a filter applied, so I hoped it will be quicker than QGIS, but I never expected how quick it was - it only took 5 seconds to calculate the same results it took QGIS 23 hours and 300GB of disk space! Next time I have a GIS project I'm fairly certain I will not shy away from using PostGIS for calculations.
There were a couple of hard parts though, most notably:
ST_Collect will nicely merge multiple lines into one single large line, but the direction of that line looked a bit random, so I had to add some extra code to fix it later.
ST_Split was similarly quite okay to use (although it took me a while to realize I needed to use ST_Snap with proper settings for it to work), but yet again the ordering of the segments were off a slight bit, but I was too lazy to fix it with code - I just updated the wrong values by hand.

The next project I had never used in the past was OpenTripPlanner. I did have a public transport project a couple years ago but back then tools like this and the required public databases were very hard to come by, so I opted into using Google's APIs (with a hard limit to make sure this will never be more expensive than the free tier Google gives you each month), but I have again been blown away how good tooling has become since then. GTFS files are readily available for a lot of sources (although not all - MAV, the Hungarian Railways has it for example behind a registration paywall, and although English bus companies are required to publish this by law - and do it nicely, Scottish ones don't always do it, and even if they do finding them is not always easy. Looks to be something I should push within my party of choice as my foray into politics)
There are a couple of caveats with OpenTripPlanner, the main one being it does require a lot of RAM. Getting the Hungarian map, and the timetables from both Volánbusz (the state operated coach company) and BKK (the public transport company of Budapest) required around 13GB of RAM - and by default docker was only given 8, so it did crash at first with me not realizing why.
The interface of OpenTripPlanner is also a bit too simple, and it was fairly hard for me to stop it from giving me trips that only involve walking - I deliberately wanted it to only search between bus stops involving actual bus travel as the walking part I had already done using PostGIS. I did however check if I could have used OpenTripPlanner for that part as well, and while it did work somewhat it didn't really give optimal results for my use case, so I was relieved the time I spend in QGIS - PostGIS was not in vain.
The API of OpenTripPlanner was pretty neat though, it did mimic Google's route searching API as much as possible which I used in the past so parsing the results was quite easy.

Once we had all of the data ready, the final bit was converting it to something I can use in JavaScript. For this I used my trusted scripting language I use for such occasion for almost 20 years now: ruby. The only interesting part here was the use of Encoded Polylines (which is Google's standard of sending LineString information over inside JSON files), but yet again I did find enough tools to handle this pretty obscure format.

Final part was the display. While I usually used Leaflet in the past I really wanted to try OpenLayers, I had another project I had not yet finished where Leaflet was simply too slow for the data, and I had a very quick look at OpenLayers and saw it could display it with an acceptable performance, so I believed it might be a good opportunity for me to learn it. It was pretty okay, although I do believe transparent layers seem to be pretty slow under it without WebGL rendering, and I could not get WebGL working as it is still only available as a preview with no documentation (and the interface has changed completely in the last 2 months since I last looked at it). In any case OpenLayers was still a good choice - it had built in support for Encoded Polylines, GPX Export, Feature selection by hovering, and a nice styling API. It also required me to use Vita for building the application, which was a nice addition to my pretty lacking knowledge of JavaScript frameworks.

All in all this was a fun project, I definitely learned a lot I can use in the future. Seeing how well OpenTripPlanner is, and not just for public transport but also walking and cycling, did give me a couple new ideas I could not envision in the past because I could only do it with Google's Routing API which would have been prohibitively expensive. Now I just need to start lobbying for the Bus Services Act 2017 or something similar to be implemented in Scotland as well

The air is hot, and beads of sweat roll down my back. My ratty t-shirt does little to hide the sweat, and the working overalls only add another layer to this heavy Orynth heat. 
Terrasen’s weather is well known for being difficult. Freezing winters and withering summers, dramatic rainstorms, or weeks of fog. All part of the routine. I roll out from underneath the car I'm working on. Three out of the four garage doors are propped open, and the AC is coughing up air, it's not cold, but at least it keeps the air moving.
I wipe my grease-stained hands onto my overalls and reach for the filter I need. After I switch this out, then refill the oil, ill be done for the day, and I can hear the creek behind my house beckoning me. 
I work in the Elia, one of Orynth’s more reliable garages. And technically my labour is illegal, but being good friends with the Ashryvers comes with perks. Like a job. And I’m the lucky one, because Aedion doesn't even get paid. Gavriel took pity on me years ago, and I've been working here since, trying to cushion my pockets a little more. 
The office doors bangs open, disturbing the fragile silence of the room.“Yo,” the devil himself shouts from the other side of the garage. “Dad says you’re good to go if you want. Just stop by the office. He got your moneyyy.” Aedion shouts, humour lining his tone.
It's a running joke, I get paid under the table until I'm sixteen, and Aedion gets nothing. He likes to pretend he’ll tell some sort of authority on me, but Gavriel shuts that down pretty fast. 
I snort and roll back under the car. I can hear him banging around somewhere. I move through the motions quickly, tasks like this have become second nature to me at this point. 
I was eleven when Gavriel recruited me to his small team of mechanics. Aedion and I constantly were getting into scraps at primary school, and my adopted parents and Gavriel thought a job might help me ease my overactive mind and raging hormones. The past few years have been mostly instruction and learning. Small projects and being the glorified maid for the older guys, but I'm beyond grateful for Gav’s direction. 
My family and I aren't rolling in money, and it pained me when I would hear them up at night pouring over overdue bills, attempting to budget and still support Oliver, my adopter father’s medical bills. There was nothing I could do as an eleven-year-old boy, but now I'm fourteen and I make ten dollars an hour. Which magically make their way into Myra, my adopted mother’s, pockets each Sunday. 
I fill the oil, and toss the empty bottles into the trash. Dragging a cloth from my overalls across my forehead, I close the hood of the car with one hand and begin to clean up my station. I may not be as good as the older guys, but I'm meticulous about cleaning. Gavriel approves, Aedion calls me anal. I walk my things over to the tool bench and put them away. Elia Ashryver stares at me from her perch on the wall. The photo of her, in the signature Elia red overalls, tattoos lining her arms, and elbow-deep in grease, shines from its spot. 
Gavriel and Elia Ashryver started this garage decades ago, but it was Elia who roped Gav into it. She was a wild child. The black sheep of her family. Apparently, she was decorated in ink before Gav had even met her in mechanical school. She was top of her class, knowing how to repair anything with an unnatural efficiency. Machines were second nature to her. And Gavriel fell head over heels in love with the cunning woman and post-graduation, the two were hitched and opening their own garage together. Elia’s expertise was the best in Orynth. And their business bloomed. Soon she was pregnant, and the asshole I call my friend was born. 
I've heard the story recited over and over from Gav, who revers his wife, but the end of her story was harder to get out of him. Elia struggled after Aedion’s birth. Her Post-Partum Depression lasted longer than the doctor said it might, and she became a different person. She struggled to bring herself out of bed, be with her child, or work with the machines she once loved. And Gav was so caught up in running a business and caring for his son, that he missed the warning signs. Elia Ashryver ended up overdosing not eight months after Aedion was born. 
Her picture never collects dust.
I shut the drawers, and make my way to the office, the red overalls I wear drag slightly on the ground around the heels of my work boots. I'll grow into them eventually. I see Aedions boots underneath a Ford Raptor, which is unsurprisingly back for the fourth time in six weeks. 
“Turn on the radio on your way out!” He shouts.
“Kay,” I flick the dial and the room fills with the familiar static of the ancient radio, landing on a more common channel playing the ‘top hits’. I recognize the new song from The Archeron Sisters.  
Aedions shitty singing fills the room, and I hastily make my way to Gav’s office before I permanently lose my hearing. I rap my knuckles on the frosted door. 
“Come in,” The voice inside shouts. 
I push the door open, and I'm hit with the heat of the room. “Gods Gav, this place is like a sauna,” I say as I trudge over to the shelf that holds my cash.  
He laughs and runs his hands through his shoulder-length hair. “I heard it's good for the skin, keeps me young, or something.” I laugh and turn to face him after I've slipped the cash into my back pocket. 
Gavriel’s a handsome man for all the weight he carries. One might think you'd find the lines of his grief over his face, but it's fitted with wrinkles from all the smiling he does. Somehow, Elia’s death doesn't really haunt him, or this garage. How he does it, ill never know. 
He leans back and appraises me. 
“You look taller than the last time I saw you,” He muses.
“Taller than yesterday?” I smile.
“Maybe a foot of height?”
“Sure Gav” 
“Bigger too, been lifting?”
I roll my eyes. “Nope.”
“You gonna join the rugby team? Aedion’s been crawling up the walls with excitement to start.” He shifts forward, tawny eyes boring into me. 
I shift in place, uncomfortable. “I’ll see.”
“You’re nervous to go to ORHS, arent you?” He states. 
“I'm not nervous.” I scoff. 
We stare at each other. And I wait for him to call me out on my bullshit. Sometimes I think Gavriel knows me better than I know myself. He just hums and nods. 
“CUSTOMER!” Aedion bellows from the garage. 
Gav rises from the worn leather chair. “Go home kid. I'll see you next week.” He says as he passes by me and wanders out of the office. 
I sigh, and turn to the other door that leads to the break room and staff parking lot just outside. Swiping a stale donut off the countertop, I trudge over to my pickup truck that's days away from being impounded into some dinosaur museum. Stuffing my face, I hop in and drive home.

Jackie's expression softens as the cat sized radio demon decides to, though possibly begrudgingly, their offer of friendship! Hahhaha yes! Finally, an Alastor that was willing to work with him some! He would have to get the other something next time they met up to celebrate!
As Nyalastor stares off into the middle distance, not sharing his thoughts per usual, they shrug to themselves. Guess he doesn't actually consider them friends then. They could see that being the case with Mimzy if he had to deal with similar experiences that they had down at the hotel but really? Not Rosie? They decide they'll have to ask Rosie about it next time they see her.
They nod lightly, ears flapping lightly as they do. "I mean, why else would I come up and talk to you if not cause I like your company?" They understood that the list of reasons to avoid the radio demon himself were a mile long but also he's just sitting there. Just a fluffy little guy! Not offering him attention should be considered a sin.
The little bap of Alastor's paw(awww cute liddle paaaw) is enough to pull them out of their anticipatory anxiety, surprised at the physical contact even if it was momentary. "Oh, you poor thing...." Their eyes scan over the fur coat, now partially ragged in the areas that skin and green stitching intersected. They had no idea who held a contract over Alastor but they swear to everything unholy if Alastor were to open up enough to share, they would go kill that fucker no questions asked. "That still sounds pretty lonely but it's good to hear some part of you is open still." Maybe even a bit more so now that he was sharing his soul's condition with them.
"Ah," To be fair, Alastor was quick to annoy and even quicker to anger in most cases. At least in his experience."if you say so."
They giggle, watching as Calastor eyes shift into that expression they knew so well on him, or well, as close as they can get. "Pfft knew you'd hate that~" Alstor only seemed to like compliments when it had to due with fear or his sense of style.
They can't help but frown some as the fucked up little radio cat demon further exposited on the state of affairs between the women and himself. What was Mimzy really like if all that had happened around Alastor was a lie? "I won't now that I know you haven't ever had any friends." Huh, guess that makes Jackie himself the first.
They kick out their legs, repositioning themselves some as their body screams for movement in a manner of itchiness. "Well if I had to guess as to why, I'd say it was the several or so murders I've committed~" They chuckle, pupils sharpening momentarily as they did, "but I don't know if that is the reason in certain terms as of yet~" >:33 They finish with a shrug.
If he didn't abhor physical contact so much they would've scooped him up for a hug. Instead, they settle for staring off into the middle distance just as the beast himself was doing. They remain quiet so as not to disturb its thought process, zoning out into their own. There was quite a lot to chew on between the demon's strained smile and the reality of his thoughts on connections of any sort.
Alastor seemed confused about the other seemingly so grateful that he had chosen to 'put up with them'. Or that's what he'd say. His ears flick a bit,head tilting as eyes looked up at Jackie. Alastor would use his abilities to project his voice, he finding it mildly annoying at times when he couldn't be as well spoken as he was in his Demon form. Jackie, I was an Overlord..well, one doesn't technically stop, we don't have that say but..consider it a sabatical of sorts..even on that people don't hesitate to try and find you...Be it for their own reasons or..in some cases they're hired by others. He let out a small huff,eyes scanning the area around them again. You're new I'm guessing, you'll learn of my history and why people don't find it easy to do as you have. I'm not calling your actions wrong they're just, not common here. Alastor got a bit more comfortable where it sat, when he spoke to the other Jackie would find Alastor wasn't putting on any sort of filter over his voice or using the famous school learned Transatlantic accent. It was just his normal voice. She's not,Mimzy..to answer your curiosity.. Rosie is my exception, she's proven herself plenty especially as an Overlord herself..I respect her. His voice lowered/softened a bit before he huffed at Jackie's remarks about his stiches. I understand your comments are rooted in well wishes but please do not fawn over me..I am not angry, it's just..uncomfortable. He said stiffly,eyeing Jackie before turning back to people watch. Or Demon watch. Creature watch? ..Creechur watch, yeah. Let's go with that. Jackie, we're in Hell--What do you think loneliness is except another punishment?..People would much rather kill you or..well..other unsavory things before attempting to be hospitable. Another flick of his ears followed,tail swishing against the ground. He scoffed,a low 'mrrr' rumbling from him. Your sympathies though, they're well placed. So--you're not wrong in expressing them. It reassured Jackie, chuckling a bit after to the teasing/compliments from before. "Heh--good." Alastor seemed thrown off by what Jackie told him that lead to them ending up in Hell. He shook his head. "You?--YOU?" More chuckling, a bit garbled this time however followed. "My--my appologies, I just couldn't hold myself back..You just don't seem the type to enjoy doing those sort of acts--and the form you were given too--what a hoot!" He mused, his microwave like purring rattling in his throat before he blinked looking back to Jackie. "Oh, are you still dealing with processing?..I hear it's a bitch now." He asked,head shaking before eyes narrowed a bit. "You're antsy, do you need a walk?"

I’ve been mulling over wasting my time trying to give a whole speech as a decade-long writer about experiencing growth and gaining inspiration from various medias and go into a small dive into how refusing to grow by creating a fervent echo chamber will only harm your process and ruin a pretty feasible creation and turn it into a battlefield that just leaves everybody miserable, as well as leave you as a stunted writer from the early 2010s.
I basically wanna say that Viv has the potential and the resources to grow as a writer. Animator, designer, world-builder — set all of those aside and focus solely on the writing aspect.
Personally, Viv has astounding concepts. Her world creation, introducing these ideas and offering a different perspective are fantastic.
Her execution is piss-poor, to be blunt.
As a small contextual tangent — there’s a sad situation that any sort of critique on her writing is seen as an attack (both by her, and her fans) and anybody who wants to offer any sort of advice or feedback are shunned and written off as haters or nihilistic assholes. Don’t get me wrong, I feel as if there’s an annoying amount of people out there who just really hate Viv and all she is, and that’s stupid. The parasocial breech on both sides of the anti and stan spectrum is so absurd, because you have her crew (I understand they do not fall under parasocial due to actually working / communicating / “knowing” her) claiming her as innocent as a lamb, and her fans praising her like she’s the second-coming of Christ, and then you have antis who attempt to doxx her and send her incessant death threats and slander her name. Neither of these things are appropriate, even if one side is technically positive.
I don’t think Viv is a saint. I don’t think she’s the most atrocious person on the planet. I am simply a fellow writer and creator who is looking at her work and pointing out places where improvement can be made. I would be much more lenient and understanding if she was a beginner or an amateur, but she’s working professionally and has been working professionally for quite some time now. People who act like she’s some helpless writer because she doesn’t have the experience don’t understand she has been making overarching worlds and stories for a decade. As have I.
So, with that preamble aside, I wanna discuss the aforementioned echo chamber Viv has locked herself into. It’s relatively well-known by now that Viv cannot handle criticism. Most amateurs can’t — it’s hard to hear that somebody doesn’t like your work, or experience the initial feeling of not being good enough. I myself for the longest time hid away from criticism and wrote rather harsh responses to people when I got it. That was wrong of me, however I was also only somewhere between 11-15. Viv was 19 or 20 when zoophobia began to release, which to some people would still consider exceptionally young. However it’s been ten years since Zoophobia, and the same writing flaws are apparent.
We’re given a premise — be it simple or not — of a show or a comic that really digs in the interest of the audience. That’s how hooks work, and hooks are not always solid in the sense of being anything more to grab your audience and sit them down to invest in your story — however, when you look at your premise for the story as the hook, and treat it as all that it is, it’s much harder to stray from it and explore different ideas and perspectives without the audience feeling confused as to why so much has changed. In Zoophobia’s case, while yes, it was a hastily dropped project for the sake of Hazbin, it fell rather fast from its initial premise of following Cameron as she navigated her job as a councilor for creatures she was petrified of (hence the name). It was handed to us under the guise of us following her journey as she learned to sympathize with something she feared, as well as aid them despite her wariness and confusion. Granted, it was present throughout most of the comic, which is probably why I enjoyed it more than I currently enjoy Helluva Boss, but it had its moments of teetering away from Cameron — her story was essentially done within the first 7 chapters of the first book. She was warming up to the animals around her, and while she was still tentative, she handled her first counseling case with almost no discomfort. I feel like in the sense her growth was rushed, because Viv really wanted to move on and look to the other cast of the comic, and that’s completely valid. It’s hard not to rush to important parts, but that’s an amateur mistake.
The problem is this mistake never corrected itself due to the filtering of criticism under the pretense of it being nothing more than mindless hate. There is a subtlety to refinement, sure, don’t fix what isn’t broken, but don’t just let it sit and get old and worn either. In Zoophobia the hook was the story. By the end of the released content, the hook was abandoned for the additives, and I do personally enjoy Damian’s moments and learning more about the world, I won’t deny that it strayed very quickly from what grabbed us in the first place. In Helluva Boss, the book was little lowborn demons going to earth and killing people already-dead people wanted offed, as well as the boss of the ragtag team being tied down by the royal he outsmarted. It was an excellent idea, and I was beyond excited to be invested in it. I was invested until about episode 4, with the cracks growing cavernous the longer I mulled over the story and the actual implications and portrayals they were giving us.
I won’t deny that I was perhaps the harshest on episode 4 due to the angels being downright disappointing, but I also recognize that introducing heaven to us in any capacity in Helluva Boss instead of keeping those cards close to the chest for Hazbin was a drastically horrible choice in a writing aspect. Yes, I know there’s an appeal of showing the opposite side of the universe and how there’s an opposite to our main cast, but it shouldn’t have been on the table in the first place. Heaven was securely wrapped in intrigue and mystery for an explicit reason of “demons don’t know angels” hence Charlie’s naïveté. Showing us, and IMP experience angels and heaven was… terrible. It has completely isolated Heaven as a joke of pastel softness instead of a force to be reckoned with. Those exterminators gave us everything we needed to know about heaven and all that should have been given — giving us the CHERUBs in episode 4 has demolished Heaven into a ridiculous joke of “oh well they have these super cool murder angels, but there’s also stupid babies who get bested by Hell’s canonical lowest-born demons :)”
This is poor writing. This is jumping forward and abandoning your hook as easily as it was brought to the audience. Technically episode 2 was the first drop of IMP, but episode 4 really kicked us down.
Another episode that comes to mind with writing issues is episode 7. Episode 7 showed us that Stolas was so depressed and in love with Blitzø after the entire season showed us he exclusively fetishized him. So much as calling him the plaything Striker assumed Blitzø to be in episode 5. Stolas was never portrayed as being in love except for outside the “grey-area instagrams”. Relying on non-canonical posts to build a relationship where canon actively fights it has the same tonal dissonance of the merchandise showing Blitzø and Stolas perfectly happy and enjoying each others company when Blitzø has smiled a total of three times around Stolas in the entire season (two of which were Blitzø being cheeky, not genuine). Episode 7 felt as if it took place 20 episodes in and not 7, and relied so heavy on Stolas being a lovesick puppy that they made all the progress and context of the literal episode prior just jump down the drain head-first. Blitzø realizing his emotions towards Stolas are negative and he feels like he’s being used? Moxxie and Blitzø seemingly becoming more attuned to one another with newfound respect? Gone. It’s all gone. Blitzø is back to stalking Moxxie and Millie and ignoring their gripes, and the crew decide “oh well we’re gonna make it Blitzø’s fault that Stolas thinks it’s a date, because Blitzø’s growth is gone and we need him and the plot to roll along.”
Then we meet a spineless king of Hell Asmodeus, with his imp, Fizzarolli who is also Blitzø’s childhood friend. You can say whatever you want about these two, I don’t care, but their relationship in any capacity is really out of nowhere. They are a foil for Stolitz, and while they work, they also make no sense. I have a long-winded tangent for Fizz and Oz, I’ll really need to organize my thoughts on them because a lot of my gripes are built out of frustration of taking an easy-way out instead of really giving us the “dark” in dark comedy.
To be short, episode 7 did not feel connected to the series. It felt like it should have come much later, and acted as if it was hot shit when in reality it was flat and hamfisted. It was so desperate to give Stolitz an episode where their relationship was put on a pedestal, and then break it back down, but the fact they were building with rubble just made the thing a disaster.
Going into season two, the writing fell harder than it ever had. Somehow, somewhere, Viv decided making these two disasters into childhood friends, or at least, force them to meet as children. As to add insult to injury, they crumpled Stella’s character, they made Paimon a joke, and they made Blitzø subjected to literally being sold by his father and bought by Stolas’s. Idk about you but even if I was capable of loving somebody romantically, if I knew my parents bought them to spend time with me, I’d instantly lose all attraction because of how disgusting that situation would be perceived as. Also as I’m writing this, I’m wondering where the hell Stolas was when Paimon was talking to Cash, since Paimon left Cash’s tent with his butler but like. Where’s the kid. Did they just forget Paimon had gone with Stolas? It could’ve been as simple as showing Stolas sneaking off to see Blitzø after the show and him, Blitzø and Fizz interacting with each other.
Anyway. Episode 1 of s2 was a mess. It single-handedly tore down everything coherent in the prior season. I don’t know how you manage to do that, but I guess when you’re stuck in an echo-chamber and hellbent on forcing every imaginable trope into your favorite ship, Viv is sacrificing quality for self indulgence. And yes, doing what you want to do is completely valid, and you don’t have to care what people think, but the fact you play it for excellency and perfection and astounding ground-breaking storytelling when in reality it’s just glorified yaoi fanfiction is disastrous. Add all of these with a rabid fan base that white-knights Viv at every chance because during a time period where she was genuinely being harassed over long-old issues she’s consistently apologized and grown from, the fan base has this weird conditioning that everything that goes against her is an intent to destroy their “perfect queer demon show.”
I don’t even have the energy for discussing season 2 episode 2, since it’s basically just digging its grave as hard as it can. It had a great moment with showing us Loona’s backstory and finally giving me a crumb of dark content, but other than that, it was a flat and boring episode. The writing was subpar since it couldn’t decide what it wanted to do, and bloated itself when it literally didn’t need to.
I’ve been writing this post over the course of three or two days now, I can’t remember but just recently Erin Frost made another post about Viv and while this isn’t the place I want to discuss it, the fandom has been saying some truly disgusting things towards a victim and I think y’all need to think about what you’re saying to people. What if all of these allegations are true? What if Viv really did say these things and really was harming her workers? Would you like these things said to you if you were in Erin’s place? What happened to you all preaching kindness and being a welcoming community? Seriously. Just sit and think for once before you say something so abysmally cruel. Viv is not gonna give you a one-way ticket to exclusive content just because you called somebody a slur.
I’ve strayed really far from the initial topic of this post which was the lack of letting yourself hearing criticism will only harm you and leave you ignorant. Viv should know by now how to write something coherent, yet she fails to do so. She should know that criticism is an excellent gateway to growth and understanding your work and how to create. Criticism is not going to go away just because you block it out. You will grow in certain areas but you will always remain stunted if you don’t let yourself be vulnerable to the views others may have. Forcing yourself into a room where all you hear and process is praise and worship, you will become so so deaf to those with genuine desire to share their views on how you could not only create something better, but create something that would flow beautifully with the rest of the creation. Right now, the writing is swimming against the current. The composition and the animation (while not perfect) are astounding in their own rights. The backgrounds are beautiful, even when in an episode where the cast is stuck for the majority in one room. The music, while not adhering to my personal tastes, is passable to the majority. I suppose the writing can be viewed that way, but most of the time I can’t tell if people are actually enjoying the show, if they’re fetishizing gay people, or if they’re just so desperate for anything queer-run and queer-oriented they lose all sense of self and devour and obsess over it because it’s content that we have been starved of for generations.
I don’t want to come off negative. These are my thoughts as a writer. These are my thoughts of a once die-hard fan who would and has white-knighted Viv before. This is coming from a place of concern and a desire to share my thoughts on how writing can grow. Just because Viv has matured from writing “wuz” to “was” doesn’t mean the piece has grown from a half-assed stick figure attempt you don’t put any soul into to Leonardo Da Vinci or Picasso. Art is supposed to be about continual growth, and when you force yourself into a box you will not be able to branch out in the ways you want. You will be forced to live in that box unless you yourself allow others to nurture in your growth. You do not have to create and grow on your own, you can allow others with conflicting inputs to interact with you.

your name - part two of the Nancy xfiles series, following Nancy and robin on a case to find someone breaking into secure FBI sites and stealing information. very dusty roads and cracked skin, an empty diner in the desert and the strange version of yourself looking back through the rear view mirror vibes
comphet nancy - she is my manifesto and also my biggest struggle. 90s nancy moves to Chicago to be with her friends and ends up falling head over heels for soft butch robin, and also figuring out she’s a lesbian, in that order. “What about Steve and Jonathan” right well going for the most popular conventionally attractive boy and then immediately jumping to the one you have a trauma bond with -> gay. The fic deals with the toxic cycle that comes with not knowing what you want, and trying very hard to fill that void. very ‘women are people with hearts and minds…but god I’m so lonely’ and ‘hunger’ by F+TM and pretty much any mitski song ever (but especially nobody & love me more)

This is technically still in the planning phase, or just about to exit it—basically community college au with frenemies to FWB to lovers steddie, with emo metal head loser radio host Eddie and Mariah Carey diehard lost in life and love Steve ( @fragilecapric0rnn instrumental in developing his musical sensibilities). Its got some sleepless in Seattle vibes, it’s got some Community vibes (six seasons and a MOVIE!), it’s got some classic romcom angst vibes. It’s gonna be a multichap fic (11chapter rn?) and I am soooo excited about it, especially the chapter around ‘sugar we’re going down’ by fob which is partly what helped develop the fic into what it is (by that I mean long as fuck) special thanks to @kkpwnall who endured every flipflopping version and will probably endure more
23. How do you choose where to end a chapter (if you have multi-chapter works)?
At the moment I don’t really have a specific plan as to when I end a chapter, I just do what feels right, gut instinct. Technically every chapter should have its own arc, and together they create the overarching arc of the story, so I’m probably just following that even if I’m not actively thinking about it during the planning process! Though I will say I’ve only got one multichap work published (mail murder I’m coming back to you…one day) and others planned so, check back in a few months and see what I say then kekeke

RYL0 is ready to see what 2023 can bring, and that means reflecting on her journey thus far to inform her songwriting process. With some of pop's most prominent producers ready to work with the rising star, she's ready to expand the vast, colorful world that she's built.Read on for PAPER's conversation with RYL0. “Thru My Chest” is such a brilliant track and is very different from a lot of your poppier, mile-a-minute songs from your EP. What did that process of shifting gears look like for you?The process has been pretty long actually! We got together for the “Thru My Chest” session late last spring, around the same time I was preparing to release my last mixtape, I’m the Worst!! So there’s been a lot of overlap. I came up with the concept of I'm the Worst!! back in 2020 and it didn’t come out until May 2022, so I’ve been playing the long game for a while and a lot can change in that window. Once that project came out, I was already mentally onto the next thing since I was doing tons of different sessions in the middle of its rollout. I had spent a few years operating in the hyperpop world, was ready for a change, and started exploring new styles of pop music. Leading up to the release of this track, I knew I also wanted to change up my look. I like to challenge myself since I get bored easily, and decided to transition from the DIY internet music aesthetic that I had embraced the past couple years to something that was more glossy. I’ve been talking about this “rebrand’ for months, and that’s not something that just happens overnight. I really wanted to take my time and make sure everything would be aligned with this new direction before rushing to put the track out. I needed new assets, so I made new logos, updated my website, created a Discord server, made a Tumblr, etc. Now that everything’s all set and the presentation’s there, I feel really confident about finally shifting gears and reinventing myself again. I browsed your Soundcloud and was taken by your older work characterized by eerie synths and minimal voice production, and I see glimpses of it in this track. How did you find your way back without letting go of your passion for pop music?I’ve actually been thinking about this a lot lately, and it really does feel like a full-circle moment. Up until late 2020, my biggest musical inspirations were Kelsey Lu, Grimes, FKA twigs and Purity Ring so I was incorporating a lot of dark electronic elements that were often categorized as “experimental” into my music. I was producing everything myself using GarageBand while I was also trying to figure out what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it as an artist. I wasn’t concerned with anything technical because I found it boring, and I never used a proper microphone because it was more convenient to just sing straight into my laptop. Obviously, I didn’t take myself too seriously but I also knew I hated being called experimental because it still felt disingenuous to what I was actually aiming for.Releasing "Thru My Chest" of course marks the beginning of a new era in my career, but it also feels like a nod back to some of my earliest releases in a lot of ways. While this was never the intention when creating this track with my collaborators Dave Burris and Christina Galligan, I think that ultimately proves the point I’ve been trying to make for years up until now… I’ve always been a pop-oriented artist. I’ve definitely gotten better at making that more obvious in my music over the years, but the pop sentiment has always been there for sure.You are a former screenwriting student. Do you envision ‘Thru My Chest’ being part of a larger story in the future, and does envisioning your music in this way help your creative process?I started writing songs around the same time I studied screenwriting in college, and I think that significantly impacted the way I tell stories in my music. I love building narratives in general, but with this song in particular– the narrative is pretty fairly self-contained. The song itself might not be my most intense or meaningful, but it’s still very honest to how I was feeling on the day we had the session. I remember really struggling to wrap my head around my own emotions, feeling really vulnerable, and trying to parse through them in real time as we were coming up with the lyrics. I think working with another writer definitely made it easier to detach myself from the context, and keep it concise while also prioritizing the song’s pop appeal.With that being said, this track does communicate really well with a few other songs I’ve made over the past several months, but that wasn’t intentional. It wasn’t until I looked back on the demos that came out of a lot of these sessions I had back to back last year that I realized there was a consistent through line at all. Usually when I come up with a concept for a project, I form a loose narrative early on in the process and try to create songs that fit within that overarching story. There’s a lot of value in that approach and I’ve learned so much about world building that way, but I didn’t do that with this song. I’ve been trying to just let stories form organically based on what I’m actively feeling inspired by in my life and let the larger story speak for itself.You’ve worked both solo and alongside a talented array of producers and fellow artists throughout your career. What has been the most rewarding and most challenging parts of going from making music independently to opening yourself up to the world of collaboration?Working with a team of people and considering other tastes, styles, opinions, and timelines can definitely have its challenging moments, but I love collaborating and it has always been a huge part of my life as a creative. Before music, I was heavily involved in pursuing both musical theater and a career in film production – both highly collaborative practices. The only real reason why I worked so independently for the first few years of my music career was because I didn’t have many other options when I first started out. I started learning more about production as a hobby while still in film school so I wasn’t really surrounding myself with people I could ask for help. I didn’t have any kind of musical network and it felt both extremely isolating and freeing since I only had my intuition and my own ears to rely on. At a certain point though during the pandemic, it was becoming harder to operate by myself on my little island because I was struggling to find new ways to grow and challenge myself. I was getting bored of operating within my limitations, so that’s when I got online and started building a community for myself and hitting up literally anyone. I was so bold about reaching out and DMing as many people as possible, and that process was extremely rewarding and changed my life. I’ve made some of my favorite songs with the help of people I’ve met online, and that gave me a lot of confidence to start collaborating in person… sometimes in really intimidating environments. I truly collaborate all the time at this point in my career and I’m a much better artist for it. surprisingly these all ended up being pre-canon hcs which were NICE because everything kinda just clicked into place
she + her siblings  are all named after Famous* Edain from the first age, and she feels a special sense of kinship to her sister andreth since they were both technically named after the same woman!
*famous is relative of course, since none of them are straight up named turin or beren etc., but all of them are named after edain that existed! and did things!
as a kid sae LOVES swans, and this earns her the nickname cygnet [i think the sindarin translation would be 'alpheg' but i'm not 100% on it]
she also loves swimming and being on her grandparent’s boat the Aduninzil [they’re shipbuilders, and the aduninzil is really more a sloop than anything, it’s p. small]
she isn’t happy about moving to minas tirith at the age of six, even if there are frequent visits to dol amroth anyway. but she adjusts to city life well enough. 
one day at the age of 8, she is involved in a pretty intense game of hide & seek on the fifth circle, and she ends up wandering into the complex that housed the halls of lore, bar vorn & bar menel -- an infinite array of hiding spaces!
she is mild mannered & quiet enough [for a newly turned 8 year old at least] that the scholars don’t necessarily mind her wandering around, as long as she doesn’t touch things without asking or break anything
she ends up spending most of the day there, enchanted by the knowledge that lay at her fingertips. 
when she leaves the houses, she’s greeted by upset-and-distraught-in-equal measure siblings (andreth, adanel & enerdhil) and is returned home to even more upset-and-distraught parents who were looking for her in the lower circles, tho they’re mostly just glad that she’s ok.
anyway! this mild detour to say; she definitely becomes a regular fixture at the houses of lore while she's still going through her own education, to the point where she's nicknamed 'golodheg' [thank you again isi!!] which means 'little sage/scholar'
[i don't think this will end up being canon for her but i think it would be freaking HILARIOUS if she ran into faramir returning books or smthn a handful of times [like no more than 4] and she's just *star-struck noises* and faramir is internally like "why tf is there a Child in here"]
during this time [from age 7-12], her father teaches her & her siblings how to use a sword, and she takes to it well enough upon realizing the footwork is almost like dancing
one day [at age 9], she finds a copy of the narn e-dinuviel [tale of the nightingale aka beren and luthien]. she's allowed to read it, and she spends a solid week working through the archaic wording with patience she'd never particularly had for anything else.
[luthien reminds her of her mom -- always dancing, warm and kind, with hidden strength -- and beren reminds her of her dad -- brave, undaunted and gentle -- though she never puts the pieces together until WELL after the fact]
when it comes time for her to make her first copy, there is no hesitation and she chooses b&l.
(in my own hc one of the major projects/milestones in a child's school life is copying a book of their own choice, which is a very long, structured process. and the finished product is referred to as a 'first copy'
by the time she is eleven, she has finished the first copy and chooses to move on to her second copy, which is the fall of gondolin & rise of the star [or ‘Narn e-Dant Gondolin ar Orthad en El’, according to tolkien gateway] in its more archaic [in human terms at least] sindarin instead of westron like b&l was
by the time she finishes the fall of gondolin, sauron’s shadow is getting really heavy, and her parents make the decision to send her + adanel to bree on the grounds that maeril [caladil’s [sae’s mom] sister] is expecting a Baby soon and will Need Help
and while that is technically true, the real reason is to keep sae & adanel safe
sae... in bree doesn’t outright do extremely poorly but she’s very concious of the fact that while the breefolk are nice & friendly, she & adanel & other gondorians are Outsiders to them
[i have a lil hc that w/ all the refugees coming up from the south, there ends up being a ‘little gondor’ section somewhere in bree]
and so sae copes with this by creating this Image of what a Perfect Gondorian should look like, and is constantly striving to meet this insanely lofty goal. and uh spoiler; she never quite does
she enlists in the breeland jrotc  junior militia as soon as she is able, along with working in the scholar’s stair to help archive things
eventually at 18, she ranks up to be a captain, and maeril’s oldest & her husband  are expecting a baby themselves now but sae REALLY wants to go home and the sooner the better
so she and adanel + her aunt & uncle compromise: sae knows enough to take care of herself so she could go ahead and get started down the greenway, and adanel would be behind her as quickly as possible
and then sae meets up with some brigands and uh :) we all know how things go from there

I appreciate your life thriving as well. To answer "transfaabulous" question: i am doing fine in fact amazing for myself. I have a long list of deeds of things I've done throughout. I think what was it? Maybe the year at best. And then even then a little bit past that. it's been pretty good and actually I don't take any meds anymore. What I do now is I take CBD. I've actually found it more optimizable for what I need. A supplement to be utilized for what I do because I am a type of person where I'm very much more active when I'm trying to get things done and when I take any of the other antidepressants or anything, it's too uncontrolled on on my end for when I'm trying to think of things and process stuff. with the way it deals with my anxiety i'm able to actually optimize pushing myself more in that way so that i can go through more anxious situations. Though I tend to take a few beers or cigar maybe here or there every few months, or maybe even spacing that out even further. It's actually surprisingly tedious for me to keep up interest in habits like that.
And even then, technically, that's only half of it. I am trying to do more, so process myself psychologically and analytically with my own behaviors. I've been studying a lot of Carl Jung specifically. And other forms of various types of psychology. not only that some philosophies. I did dipped in Netzech a bit. Sun Tzu, Miyamoto Musashi, Marcus Aurelius, and a bit of Aristotle soon coming up. I have also Taoist literature soon arriving and I'm looking into more philosophical and. What's the word? Symbolic and spiritual studies concerning ceremonial magic and certain other. Umm. Concepts. It's a lot of. High processing conscious thought, but I have been making very much great progress in actually applying myself. I've been making good money on a couple of jobs and I am soon to looking forward to opening a business soon through a DBA or something like that. Long term, I'm looking into a lot of various big projects, but they'll need more capital and means of getting those done. But I have the books ready and I take a lot of studying.
My health has been pretty good as well. I've I think I've lost. What was it? 4 inches on my waist? No, wait, it was 6 alright. Uh OK. I've trimmed off like a few. Was it 10 20 pounds? Forty, maybe. No. No, I was heavier way back when this was all relevant. Probably 40 to 50 relatively. Been trying to keep up swimming and Weight lifting. And all while I've been doing that, you know all the self health growth stuff I've gotten decently into cooking. I'd like to make a few mean burgers, steaks. Uh, what was it? Octopus. Liver, chicken liver, beef liver? Fish, looking into bone marrow. All types of **** I just throw on that grill. I love to take pictures. It's fun making that stuff decent and right to tste Sometimes I still stick to drawing. But not as much. Practice a little bit of acoustic guitar, but haven't been able to come up with an idea of where I want to go with that. I feed all sorts of birds. rabbits ducks squirrels in my back yard like my whole backyard is full of its own ecosystem. and considering how movies have been and all of the current stuff i've decided to just try to go into exploring operas and stage plays that they could put on in the movie theater instead. It's very fun stuff, very intense and like interesting to kind of. Analyze.
Family relations are good and I have a couple of friends who do well sticking around to, you know, get some activities done when we can. I've also found it better to just not exist on the Internet as a persona or anything. It doesn't work for me like that. Computers for me are more of a tool or something in that manner for calculations or anything.
If anything I have become a stable powerhouse of what Steve was, and what Steve is still considering all the time back then ago. I am the "adventure" and the "experience": as I've been told.

No, dude. The comics do exist and can be found here in the order I could best put them in: https://imgur.com/gallery/oSYzcNQ. While I still don’t like Jon, I do believe in archiving as much of his work as possible (it’s not  like he was going to do it himself anyway).  I don’t know how you went to google and said “it doesn’t exist” when clearly it does, but it does prove how little people actually know this thing’s mere existence if a google search couldn’t find the results.
Technically, the comic has two names: The Chronicles of Ademar and Lily the Panda. Although, the last one is more of a name for the web domain than a comic title. To put it simply, the premise of the comic looked like it was going to focus on Lily the Panda and Buckley Bunny, two personal bodyguards of the royal Ademar family in the kingdom of Ademar. The two of them have a simple dynamic of Lily being a self-serious and devoted samurai despite her young age and Buckley being the more reckless but seemingly dutiful bunny rogue of the pair. The two definitely would have met their fair share of threats, mysteries, and maybe slight comedic situations with various one-off or recurring characters and ongoing threats and gotten to know the world and its people more in the process.
The problem with this is that even with the comics, it’s still just nothing but a proof of concept for a series either made in Ponikvar’s spare time or for a college assignment he did in the past, especially with how the art contrasts with the tone of the comic pages. He mentioned at one point that he was going to make The Chronicles of Ademar into a series, with the mention of a first issue and a full book no less, until he had to put it in storage for an indefinite amount of time until either Peter and Company or Peter and Whitney ended. Something as you can see we know isn’t going to happen with how plans have changed after the web domain was eventually lost. You can pretty much find a little more info on the concepts of this project on the old site through the wayback machine in general, right here:https://web.archive.org/web/20140614161713/http://www.lilythepanda.com. You can also find it through his Furaffinity and Deviantart accounts. Personally, I would’ve liked to have seen the concept to be realized, but seeing Jon’s many many many…… issues I doubt the results would be favorable if the idea was realized.
As interesting as this is, I am not going to riff it. It's still a bunch of really loose and thinly connected concepts that wouldn't make for a good riff.

Here are some thoughts/reflection/process things re: the Tallahassee comic. Since this is my art blog, I figured this was the best spot to put it! Lots of images and pretty long, so I've thrown it below a cut.
This is the first time I've seriously worked with Microns and a lot of 'em since... oh, lord, 2020. I'm pretty sure I've done some other stuff along those lines, but here are examples and an emulation of the style digitally:

I'm still not super comfortable with backgrounds (or cars; all the shots at the beginning are framed VERY carefully so that I do not have to draw one), but you can see that they've gotten a lot better. The sparseness of the floor was intentional - I wanted to create the effect of an infinite-looking space, with the ceiling fan to provide depth. There's a bit more depth and weightiness than in that drawing of Karkat or the seagulls.
That's partially because the house is as much of a character in Tallahassee as its narrators. Aside from the space in the liner notes devoted to describing their environment, there's also quite a bit in the album itself. There isn't much physically happening in the notes, either, so I had to rely on shots of the house in order to fill panel space. Three cheers for symbolism and vivid imagery!

To pull up another page, I've also gotten A LOT better with natural environments in particular. I'm quite proud of that rose bush and the fence, although I could've taken a little more care while filling it in and the lighting leaves something to be desired.
Speaking of, my attempts at lighting are quite a bit more solid, but still not perfect. Consistency isn't great, and I have some qualms about the Alphas' hair and the shadow cast by the Alpha Male sitting up, but what can ya do? At least I'm drawing shadows being cast by things, haha.
I think the attic, the window shots, and "knocked down" panels look the best light-wise. I was trying to convey bright moonlight, and I think I did a pretty good job! I adore the curtains. A solid runner-up is the open door; I wanted to use it as a reverse light source, of sorts. In retrospect, I could have spaced the door shots out a bit more to make it feel more ominous.
Craft-wise, there's also a lot of improvement. Normally, I'd do a longform, easy-to-fuck-up project like Tallahassee digitally. However, I forgot my drawing tablet stylus in a very stupid place that I won't return to for a few months. So, I've been going back to pen and paper again.
I felt very confident right out of the gate, which is very strange considering it was the first time I'd used many of those pens for art in a hot minute! I actually did another casual-ish piece with Microns and gel pens in my sketchbook a few weeks before this, shown below:

but while I was VERY excited about my use of color, I wasn't super fond of the ink work. That's because I fucked up before I even started.
My sketchbook is, er, a sketchbook. The pages are pretty rough. I learned while working on the comic that technical pens are meant for use on smooth paper, and will often appear spotty/inconsistent on the rougher stuff. You can REALLY see it on the frame around the magpie. I switched to standard-issue copier paper in the comic, which plays much nicer with them. Sketch paper also frays brush pens. Oops! Guess that explains what happened to one of those poor, poor souls...
I got my first set of Microns in 2017-ish. I was really only interested in the fixed-width pens; I'd tried a brush pen earlier on and HATED. IT. With a burning passion. My hands have always been pretty unsteady, but it was worse when I was younger, so my lines looked godawful. The set came with a brush pen, though, and I made many valiant attempts to use it. In my sketchbook. Which inevitably frayed it terribly and rendered it unusable for most purposes.
I used the set quite a bit, but infrequently enough that I've still got most of them! My 005 is going strong, but the 05 is lost, and the 1 and 03 are not long for this world. I've known the 03 is on death's door for a while now, but the 1 just started giving out on me while working on Tallahassee. I tried to replace both, but instead ended up with a 2. It worked out, though; I used it to fill in large, dark spaces. I really should've been using an alcohol marker, hence the streakiness.
Back to the brush pen, I ended up getting another set in 2019 that was all brushes, but this time with colors! "It will be different now," I told myself. "I'm a better artist. I'm stronger, and I do colored lines digitally. So I will use a brush pen, and I will like it." I did not use those brush pens and I hated them. But I did end up with a mercifully unspoiled black brush pen thanks to those, and also a red.
All three of the brushes I've named make an appearance here. I used the frayed pen to texture the grass and the Spanish moss; it ended up perfect for soft, fluffy things. I used the healthy and whole one for the tree branches and the Alphas on the "knocked down" page to lend them a more organic feel. The red makes its appearance on the last page.

It's the staircase on the left. I drew the lines with the red brush, then VERY, VERY, VERY carefully colored around them with the black. The red lettering was done by writing it out in pencil, writing over them in red gel pen, then VERY, VERY, VERY carefully tracing around them with a black pen and filling things in. Do not do that. It is stupidly time-consuming. If I pull a similar trick next time, I'm just going to write with my white gel pen and then go over it again with my red brush.
For the sake of my sanity and yours, I will not discuss that process in any more depth. I will also abstain from telling you about the hellish nightmare that was trying to print copies to distribute as zines, because DEAR FUCKING LORD.

Process Blog Weeks 7 + 8
Since I was little my dream job was to do something with art. I never thought of my dream as realistic, until now. Before I came to The University of South Carolina, I was attending a technical college for nursing. I didn’t have a passion for nursing, I just knew it was a job that would give a decent paycheck at the end of the day. When the pandemic hit, I realized that nursing was not going to make me happy, I just knew I needed to figure out what that was. After finishing my general courses at my technical college, I graduated with my Associates, but I knew I wanted to continue my education elsewhere. I was really interested in Graphic Design, but unfortunately there were not a lot of choices for me when it came to schools. A lot of the options were out of state or private, which made them very expensive. I really wanted a program where I would be able to receive the education I needed at a more affordable price. The GD+I program came just at the right time for me. When I found that UofSC offered a Graphic Design Program, I knew that this was the right path for me.
I think what drew me to Graphic Design is that it is an ever-changing field. I find it interesting how our technologies are evolving at a rapid pace, and how these new technologies are being used in Design. In our book we talked about when digital media was first introduced, it rapidly changed the field of Graphic Design. This was a transitional phase for many graphic designers at the time. Being adaptive to change seems to be a very important skill needed in design. This is a skill that separates the best designers from the crowd. I'm not aspiring to know I will have job security in this career, I know that jobs will come and go. I'm here to learn the tools and methods to create and solve problems.
Project 3 Finishes
Below is my finished draft of project 3. I overall think Its a drastic improvement from my last draft of the project. In the previous draft the words were hard to distinguish from the background. I added a transparent white square behind the words to get them to pop off the background. I also changed up the colors of the background with a light pink color, and a cyan. I think making these changes made the overall graphic look more cohesive.

Project 4 Start
Project 4 is a character logo project. The ultimate goal of this project is to pick two characters from one of the provided movies and make two logos (one for each character) that represent them. The movie I choose was Beetlejuice. After watching the movie, I decided to choose Lydia Deetz and The Maitlands for my logos.
After choosing the characters for my logos I started my Concept Matrix. A concept matrix is pretty much a sheet to write down and create ideas quickly. Below is my Concept matrix. (Only Mark 1 is finished)

I'm excited to finish my concept matrix and sketches. We are about to move our designs into illustrator to start creating our vector logos.
We just learned the basic of creating lines with the pen tool in Illustrator this week. I will soon be starting the process on my own designs.

since im pretty sure this blog has forgotten that im an Osemanverse fan...
LETS TALK ABOUT THE NEW HEARTSTOPPER TV STILLS!!!
as an Alice Oseman enthusiast and Film student im LEGALLY OBLIGATED to yell about the new shot stills. so thats exactly what im going to be doing. with our favorite golden retriever boy, Nick Nelson!

this specific still has to be my FAVORITE amongst all of the shots that were revealed the other day. AND IM GOING TO TELL YOU WHY. 
(fyi- this is just a funsies analysis of the shot, so my technical language might not be right on the nail, and my analysis might be flawed. but we’re here for fun!)
THE FRAMING. OOH THE FRAMING. if we’re following the Rule of Thirds, Nick occupies the exact centre of the frame. he’s positioned so that his face falls at the centre of the image, while also allowing for negative space in the top third of the screen and in the two thirds across from him that he doesnt occupy.

this paired with the fact that the frame is shot in an almost Medium Close-Up, makes this the perfect establishing shot to show us Nick for the first time. the focus of the shot is on him, but through the negative space we’re also encouraged to process Nick as a part of his environment, and to understand how he fits into it and who he is as a result.
the shot is also completely symmetrical, and the negative space that literally surrounds him integrates him so well into the environment. on top of that, the symmetrical nature of the shot gives it a quaint quality, similar to Wes Anderson’s famous symmetrical shot. (yes.. ive been researching him for my projects at school…)

the whole thing is just so clean, quaint, and inviting. additionally, the framing here actually mirrors Alice’s original artwork really well, as she often uses negative space and framing to her advantage as well! 
LIGHTING AND COLOUR. the scene is so bright!! and its SO LOVELY!! the shot is just filled with natural light, which could be described as High-Key Lighting, which basically means more light and less harsh shadows. the use of bright lighting gives the shot a calming quality, as well as making it feel real. and its so well balanced here. 
moving onto the colour scheme! the shot also doesnt shy away from natural, real colours, which is most likely a product of the place they chose to shoot the scene. that and the fact that the whole frame is just POPPING with colour makes you want to look everywhere. but at the same time, this is what makes Nick feels like he belongs in the environment we’re being shown. 
soo TLDR; in my basic and very humble opinion, the new stills show such a fantastic mix between moods that feel very real while also mixing the artistic style of the original Heartstopper. and im obsessed.
