The loss of Toriyama-Sensei hit me hard. I cried the evening I heard the news, like losing a family member, even though I never had the honor in meeting him.
Like every other artist, his influence is astronomical. DBZ was the highlight of my day as I got back from school and dropped in front of the TV to watch the next episode with hype, to then talk about it at school with my friends. We would scream our lungs out with the power levels and try to do the Fusion dance, which was hard to do btw. Being a girl liking DBZ wasn’t weird, even by that time, although I was the only girl at school who loved anime. 😂
I remember watching Rebirth of Fusion over and over as a friend gave me a VHS copy (since that was hard to get anime stuff back in the 90’s unlike today). I watched it so much I didn’t need to read the wonky yellow subtitles and I could tell the movie word by word in Japanese. I would NEVER imagine watching Dragon Ball on the big screen, that movie was Dragon Ball Super: Broly.
I grew up with DBZ in Spanish, English and Japanese. I know the songs in three languages. It’s insane to me the amount of figures that I own of Dragon Ball. Mainly Vegita and Broly. I gotta get me a SSG Gojita now.
I haven’t drawn DBZ style since junior-high. I hope I made you proud Sensei! 🙏🏼
Toriyama-Sensei, thank you.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything and I hope you have fun with Kentaro-Sensei and Kazuki-Sensei in the afterlife. 💙

The two of us running this blog, as well as everyone at Bulbagarden as a whole, would like to offer our condolences to the family and fans of Akira Toriyama-sensei, whose death on March 1, 2024, was announced earlier tonight. He was 68 years of age. As many of you may know, Toriyama-sensei was the creator of the extremely influential Dragon Ball anime and manga franchise, which meant an incredible amount to not only many of our staff here, but to a wide variety of fans across the world -- including influencing those who've worked on Pokémon media in the past, possibly even Ken Sugimori, the father of the first 151 Pokémon, himself. Rest in peace, Toriyama-sensei, and thank you for all you've done. Your hard work will be sure to live on forever.
ご冥福をお祈りいたします、鳥山先生。

Thank you so much Akira Toriyama for absolutely everything you've done! You are one of the most incredible man to have ever existed in this world that has influenced and forever changed the entire art industry. So many people's childhoods were created because of you. And so many artists like myself were incredibly inspired by you.
And of course, Dragon Ball as a whole will always be one of the first animes I've ever watched! I've rewatched Dragon Ball countless of times as I've never gotten tired of your stories, nostalgia and your beloved characters. I will forever cherish memories of spending time with family, friends. And I'm hoping to meet even more amazing people, communities, gamers and artists who love your work!
Farewell, and rest in peace in Other World 💖🧡💛
(Edit: Just realized I put 1995 instead of 1955, my bad 💀)

my fondest childhood memories are tied to dragon ball. my oldest brother would search the internet for episodes and polish subtitles and download them overnights, just so we could later have a marathon. the three of us - me and my brothers - would squeeze ourselves together on a tiny bed and turn the small computer monitor to watch at least three episodes every night, without fail. we got through the og series and dbz, and at a later date we also watched gt
i remember all of us groaning in unison at the frieza fight and its lenght (one more episode and we go to sleep! we didnt) and my cousin saying she didnt like visiting us at that time because all we wanted to do was watch more dragon ball lmfao.
dragon ball introduced me to the world of anime and manga, and was one of the earliest inspirations for me to become an artist. for a kid from a small village in the middle of nowhere, whos world was limited to the forest surrounding it and the town nearby, the work of akira toriyama was fascinating and awe-inspiring. hearing about his passing hit me like a train.
thank you, akira toriyama, for inspiring me to become an artist, and changing the industry forever. fly high, king
