I've been seeing the rumors for a year now that BasicFun (who rebooted pound puppies and carebears recently) were getting the rights for LPS. It's now confirmed! A digital game (roblox) and the toys will be released by next year!

Judging by the art, likely the 2000s models of the toys. I'm a little sad it won't be the 90s ones but this is still very exciting!

I'm also hearing that there will be new models, not just re-releases.

Factory Entertainment Announces Partnership with Paramount To Produce Star Trek Collectibles

Factory Entertainment announced that the company has entered into a multi-year agreement with Paramount parent, Viacom International Inc, to expand upon its best-selling line of movie and television collectibles for Star Trek.

Factory Entertainment’s Star Trek line will be centered primarily around its high-end prop replica business. Since 2011, the company has established itself as the leader in producing authentic, limited- edition replicas of props and gadgets from popular movie and TV properties.

“The many props featured in Star Trek over the decades have always reflected an imaginative and forward-looking design aesthetic, that have not only captivated fans, but often influenced the design of real-world technology” said Jordan Schwartz, President and CEO of Factory Entertainment.  “As a Star Trek fan myself since the 1960s, I’m thrilled and honored to be entrusted by Paramount to continue to bring some of the most iconic items in Star Trek history to the many fans of the franchise in all its incarnations.”

In 2022, Factory Entertainment released limited-edition replicas of several props from Star Trek: The Next Generation, including the “cricket phaser,” seen in the first few seasons, a set of medical devices used by Dr. Beverly Crusher and the “Ressikan flute” treasured by Captain Jean Luc Picard in the fan-favorite episode “The Inner Light.”  The company also released a replica of the Borg Queen’s skull seen in the motion picture Star Trek: First Contact and a set of replicas from Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  In addition, Factory Entertainment introduced a number of popularly priced open-edition, reduced-scale replicas designed to appeal to collectors with more restricted budgets or space.

Factory Entertainment is well underway on the production of prop replicas and other collectibles for 2023, including, among others, items from the original Star Trek series, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Picard.  Also in development for release in 2024 are the first prop replicas from the hugely popular Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Sometimes you just have one of those moments where the progress we've made as a culture get thrown into stark relief. You look at something and go "Holy shit, that would never have happened when I was a kid."

Today, I had one of those moments when I realized that the teenage boys I'm working with are just. genuinely, openly enthusiastic about going to Build-a-Bear for their outing.

These are sixteen and seventeen year old boys! They just had a whole conversation about what to name their "cute", mostly new squishmallows! They're genuinely excited that they're going to Build-a-Bear this weekend and asking other kids to pick up specific accessories for them!!

Holy shit, that never would've happened when I was 16. None of the boys would have dared to be visibly interested - and neither would most of the girls! There would have been a million gay jokes and "Haha, you're a girl" jokes and "What are you, a baby?" jokes. Teenagers weren't even supposed to care about anything back then!

Less than 15 years later, and I'm watching three 17 year old boys treat all that as not even worthy of comment.

So let's call that a reason for hope. Even when the kids aren't alright, in some ways apparently they are alright. Go Gen Z, honestly. It's so lovely to watch you guys just openly doing and saying stuff that, when I was a teen, would've been a social death sentence.

Since how I get my toy news seems to change every five years, here's a little report on it.

When young in the 80s I just went to the toy store and hoped for the best. The characters in the wave were shown on the back of the card. I subscribed to the MotU fan magazine and sometimes characters slated for a future wave would show up there early.

Between 13 and 20 I was encouraged to put away childish things so I didn't do much in the way of toys. Sad, inauthentic times.

Then one day circa 2000 I was in a secondhand collectors' spot and noticed Toyfare magazine for the first time. The cover story was about radical re-imaginings of He-Man and crew for a new generation. I got back into collecting and read Toyfare for my toy news whenever I could get one at the newsstand, which was a thing.

2002 saw the advent of Marvel Legends and I started collecting those in addition to the MotU's. I got a subscription to Toyfare and kept that up until it went completely digital.

That corresponded roughly with when Legends went defunct due to the gas crisis so I didn't seek out toy news for a while.

After Legends returned I would get my news via social media and a few niche toy news sites. Toy YouTubers became a phenomenon and gradually the news on sites and social media became slower than getting it from YouTube, which is what I currently do (I like Jay C and Model Behavior the most.)

I am wondering what will make them obsolete. Maybe in the near future Hasbro will just send a drone to my house at exactly 2:05pm every Wednesday and show me the new preorders on a terminal, and if I miss it I have to go to the secondary market like a chump.
