Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit! (“Happy Saint Patrick’s Day to you” in Gaelic) Saint Patrick’s Day is a celebration of Irish culture and heritage held annually on March 17th in most English-speaking countries and regions with an Irish diaspora. The shamrock is the symbol of Ireland but what, botanically speaking, is a “shamrock”? The word comes from the Irish Gaelic word “seamrog” which means “little clover”, but this is simply a common name that can apply to several clover-like plants native to Ireland. All clover species belong to the genus Trifolium, which is a member of the Fabaceae plant family which includes peas and beans. The genus name Trifolium literally means “three leaves” in Latin and clovers almost always bear a leaf composed of three equally sized leaflets. Four leafed clovers can occur in almost all clover species and are thought to be the result of a recessive genetic mutation due to their rarity. The three leaflets symbolise the Holy Trinity in Irish culture, and it is said Saint Patrick used the plant to help explain Christian teaching during his mission to convert the Irish to Christianity. There is no single species exclusively officially known as a “shamrock”. Several clover species are commonly called shamrocks in Ireland, including the Red Clover (Trifolium pratense), White Clover (Trifolium repens), Purple Clover (Trifolium pratense purpureum), and Lesser Trefoil (Trifolium dubium). An edible wild plant called Wood Sorrel (Oxalis acetosella) is also commonly called a shamrock. Despite the visual similar to clover leaves, the Wood Sorrel belongs to a different plant family and is only distantly related to true clovers. If you’re putting up shamrock decorations or wearing festive clothes adored with shamrocks today, see if you can decide which species is the true shamrock. #katia_plantscientist #plants #botany #botanical #botanicalphotography #saintpatricksday #saintpatricksday2023 #ireland #irish #irishculture #nature #clover #woodsorrel #whiteclover #redclover #trefoil #shamrock #plantidentification #plantfacts #leaves #cloverleaf #green #saintpatrick #flowers #plantbiology #trifolium #fabaceae #oxalis #wildflowers #plantscience

I've been feeling so much better lately that Scientist let me go back to my den. Tall patches of clover have started growing everywhere, so I went on a trek to find any ones that have four leaves. While I haven't found any yet, here's what I did find out!
In the fields closest to my pond, there are two main species that I could see: white clover, with the tall white flowers; and the Lesser Hop Trefoil, with the small yellow flowers.
White clover, or Trifolium repens, is native to Europe and central Asia but not to the Americas. It is able to spread so far and quickly wherever it's planted due to its vast underground system of creeping stems called "stolons". The rooting ability of the stolons helps white clover come back every spring even when the main seeding part of the plant. White clover is also frequently used for anything from hay for livestock to erosion control in certain parts of North America.
Lesser Hop Trefoil, or Trifolium dubium, has a similar range to white clover. Its leaves are small and arranged three to stem, thus the specific name "trefoil". It can grow in dry and hot areas, and many insect pollinators and herbivores like it when fields have a variety of clover. Several small birds, mammals, and reptiles use it for cover and nesting.
In fact, many animals use both kinds of clover as a source of food. Even humans can eat its flowers, stems, and leaves as long as they're boiled for maximum digestibility. Some human cultures have medical uses for these kinds of clover.
I'm glad to be back outside! Chelys, out!

#diadesanpatricio #saintpatricksday #arziade https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp43Mo-Ohk4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

A pumpkin spice latte, cuz October is coming too soon! Pretty sure acts like one of the Heathers... The red one... Yo get what I'm saying?...
Mocha Chatler(moschata, a type of pumpkin. Also, I looked up which one was the red Heather[Chandler]. I'm guessing she has a red straw since pumpkin spice lattes aren't red themselves) The green one is Mocha Dubki(shamrock drink, last name is both a reference to the green Heather[Duke] and Trifolium Dubium, a type of shamrock) and the yellow one is Mocha McNada(the Lemon Cake Frappuccino from the secret menu. The last name is a reference both to the yellow Heather[McNamara] and the fact that this drink has lemonade[lemonada] in it.)

Trifolium incarnatum (crimson clover)
Trifolium dubium (the small yellow clover)
And Trifolium repens (common white clover)
All growing on the side of the road. The red ones pop up every year and they're so eye-catching on the side of the road. I finally pulled over to get a shot to try and identify it. I also grabbed a couple of seed heads to try and grow for myself.
