Edward Brian "Tubby" Hayes (30 January 1935 – 8 June 1973)was an English jazz multi-instrumentalist, (also played flute and vibes). Best known for his tenor saxophone playing in groups with fellow sax player Ronnie Scott and with trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar.

Storia Di Musica #325 - Family, Music In A Doll's House, 1968
L'edificio della copertina del disco di oggi è una casa. Ma di quelle delle bambole. È anche, come per una vera casa, un susseguirsi di ambienti legati, di storie. Il disco di oggi è, unanimemente, uno dei più particolari e preziosi dischi degli anni '60 e, aggiungo io, uno dei miei preferiti in assoluto. Tutto inizia a Leicester, inizio anni '60. Roger Chapman, che già ha qualche esperienza in piccoli gruppi, forma i Farinas, con suoi amici del Leicester Art College: Charlie Whitney, che suona la chitarra, Jim King che suona il sassofono, Harry Overnall e Tim Kirchin, quest'ultimo poi sostituito da Ric Grech. Registrano un primo singolo, per la Fontana, dal titolo You'd Better Stp / I Like It Like That del 1964, che ha un piccolissimo successo. Cambiano nome in Roaring Sixties e pubblicano un nuovo singolo, We Love The Pirates, nel 1966. A questo punto cambiano nome in Family, per l'abitudine di fare tutto insieme, e quando Rob Townsend sostituisce Overnall vanno a Londra. Qui in poco tempo si diffonde la notizia che in città c'è un gruppo che mischia in maniera totalmente innovativa blues, folk, jazz, e ha un cantante che ha una voce incredibile, calda, ruvida e trascinante. Nel 1967 pubblicano la loro prima grande canzone Scene Through The Eye Of A Lens, e firmano un contratto per la Reprise, etichetta fondata nel 1960 da Frank Sinatra, che cercava più libertà d'espressione dalla sua etichetta storica, la Capitol Records. Il disco di oggi, che esce nel 1968, fu il primo di una band Inglese distribuito negli Stati Uniti dall'etichetta (che nel 1968 faceva già parte della Warner Bros.).
Music In A Doll's House passerà alla storia già solo per il titolo: infatti uscirà poche settimana prima del disco dei Beatles che John Lennon voleva chiamare con lo stesso titolo (che riprende il famoso testo teatrale di Henrik Ibsen nel 1879). Lennon fregato dall'accaduto decise poi di pubblicare il loro ultimo lavoro, un disco doppio, con la copertina bianca semplice e dal semplice titolo The Beatles (capolavoro immenso della storia della musica). Quello che rende quest'album tra i più enigmatici e inventivi di quegli anni è che fu, all'atto pratico, l'anello di congiunzione storico-musicale per quello che pochi mesi dopo diventerà il progressive. Prodotto da Dave Mason dei Traffic (Inizialmente l'album avrebbe dovuto essere prodotto da Jimmy Miller, ma quest'ultimo era già impegnato nelle registrazioni di un altro capolavoro, Beggars Banquet dei Rolling Stones), il disco sciorina in 15 brani brevi (uno solo sopra i 4 minuti) una varietà incredibile di creatività, la musica della casa di bambole apre ogni volta stanze differenti: blues revival e canti gregoriani nella stessa canzone (la favolosa Old Songs New Songs), sanno giocare con il fascino dolciastro del r&b (Hey Mr Policeman), sanno suonare il miglior beat sound inglese, come i riferimenti a Kinks e Traffic di due gioielli come Me My Friend e la languida Mellowing Grey, passano con disinvoltura al folk rock (Peace Of Mind) senza disprezzare puntatine verso la psichedelia all'epoca nel fiore della sua potenza, con il sitar orientaleggiante di See Through Windows. E come dimenticare i violini e la voce "da brividi" che aprono The Voyage, prima di trasformarsi in un saltellante rock? O lo sgangherato God Save The Queen che chiude la circense 3 X Time? I brani sono intervallati da piccoli intermezzi strumentali, chiamati giustamente Variation: Variation On A Theme of Hey Mr. Policeman, Variation On A Theme Of The Breeze e Variation On A Theme Of Me My Friend. In Old Songs New Songs suonano non accreditati la band di Tubby Hayes, virtuoso del sassofono, e alcuni arrangiamenti per archi furono effettuati dall'allora 18enne Mike Batt, che diventerà in seguito grande produttore e per anni presidente dell'Industria Fonografica Inglese. La band gira a mille, usando strumenti all'epoca innovativi come il Mellotron suonato proprio da Dave Mason, il sassofono tenore e soprano di Jim King, il violino e il violoncello di Ric Grech (il quale l'anno dopo lascerà la band per suonare il basso nei Blind Faith assieme agli ex-Cream Eric Clapton e Ginger Baker e a Steve Winwood, in pausa dal suo progetto principale, i Traffic). Ma la vera bomba è la voce di Roger "Chappo" Chapman, un ruggito blues indimenticabile, dall'animalesca vocalità, che segnerà un'epoca, e farà moltissimi seguaci (Peter Gabriel dei Genesis, che nascevano proprio in quelle settimane, ne prenderà nota).
La carriera della band proseguirà per qualche anno ancora, fino al 1973, con grandi album (tra tutti Family Entertainment, Anyway e Fearless), con una delle copertine più belle degli anni '70 (il vecchio televisore anni '50, sagomato nell'edizione originale di Bandstand del 1972) e la nomea di band degli eccessi, idea questa che venne "prepotentemente" sottolineata dai racconti che una famosa groupie, Jenny Fabian, che nel suo romanzo Groupie non usò molta fantasia per nascondere i nomi dei nostri nel raccontare le pruriginose avventure dei nostri. L’ultimo concerto della Family avvenne al Politecnico di Leicester, il 13 ottobre del 1973, e si racconta che il party post concerto fu altrettanto memorabile. Degno finale di una delle più suggestive e talentuose formazioni musicali di quegli anni.

Note: This early work by John Shinnors has a fascinating provenance. It was commissioned in 1980 by a friend and patron of the young artist who, during this period, was struggling to make a living from his work. It was prior to his major breakthrough following his GPA Award in 1984. The friend, though from Limerick, had lived and worked in London during the sixties and seventies. He was a jazz aficionado and got to know Christine Keeler through their mutual involvement in the vibrant London jazz scene of that period. A time when the Flamingo, Ronnie Scott's and The 100 Club were all thriving and Tubby Hayes was in his all too brief prime. After he settled back in Limerick he gave Shinnors a personal photograph of Keeler in this provocative pose complete with the leopard skin jacket (so apt for the Shinnors treatment) and asked him to produce a painting based on it. He required the photograph, which he clearly treasured, to be returned with the completed commission. The friend in question died recently and the painting has been consigned by his long-term partner. This work has never been seen in public before. It is a striking example of Shinnors early style which shows the influence of his great friend and mentor Jack Donovan. The eye is drawn to the red belt buckle, that distinctive deep cadmium red that the artist has favoured through the years. The frank, even brazen image is juxtaposed piquantly by the ghostly painting within the painting that was by a Scandavian artist whose name Shinnors could not recall when I asked him about it recently. John P. O'Sullivan,July 2023Christine Margaret Keeler (22 February 1942 - 4 December 2017) was an English model and showgirl. Her meeting at a dance club with society osteopath Stephen Ward drew her into fashionable circles. At the height of the Cold War, she became sexually involved with a married Cabinet minister, John Profumo, as well as with a Soviet naval attaché, Yevgeny Ivanov. A shooting incident involving a third lover caused the press to investigate her, revealing that her affairs could be threatening national security. In the House of Commons, Profumo denied any improper conduct but later admitted that he had lied.This incident discredited the Conservative government of Harold Macmillan in 1963, in what became known as the Profumo affair. Keeler was alleged to have been a prostitute, which was not a criminal offence. Ward was, however, found guilty of being her pimp; a trial was instigated after the embarrassment caused to the government. The trial has since been considered a miscarriage of justice and a charade by the establishment to protect itself. Stephen Ward committed suicide before the jury in his trial returned a verdict.

Life is love and love is life.” UK jazz master Chip Wickham follows last year’s brilliant soulful long-player Cloud 10 with a deftly crafted, reflective EP of beautiful spiritual jazz influenced by the soulful sounds of Yusef Lateef. Chip’s music has always drawn on a broad world of influences: from hip-hop to Roland Kirk, and from classic funk to the ‘60s Brit-Jazz of Tubby Hayes. But Love & Life finds him foregrounding his wonderful flute playing, producing a perfect four-tracker of reflective, peaceful jazz that elevates and inspires as well as a trademark slice of boppish soul jazz – the jaunty Space Walk. Elsewhere lead single Love & Life is a joyous jazz waltz with an uplifting, bouncing groove and Slow Down Look Around is introspective and intimate, featuring Chip’s signature flute with a beautiful solo from UK trumpeter Malcolm Strachan. Chip explains that the track presents “a big lesson for us to learn as the world changes around us with such speed. The technology changes but our human needs remain the same: peace, tranquillity and time to think.”

Dizzy Reece – Blues in Trinity
Blues in Trinity is an album by Jamaican-born England-based jazz trumpeter Dizzy Reece, featuring performances recorded in 1958. It was his first album for the Blue Note label and is considered by some to be a ‘bop classic’ and among Reece’s best work. Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars and the review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine stated, “Although the band was thrown together, there’s a definite spark to this combo, which interacts as if it had been playing together for a long time. Throughout it all, Reece steals the show with his robust playing, and that’s why Blues in Trinity rises above the level of standard-issue hard bop and becomes something special”. Also included is a brilliant liner essay by British saxophonist Simon Spillett that's not only full of historical data, but cultural insight. While it's worthy of complaint that the original albums are not presented wholly together, separated by discs, it's actually minor. The sound on this set is excellent the music was remastered from original tapes, not vinyl. Disc six contains the final three jams from that album, which features a dynamite reading of George Gershwin's "Love Walked In." The last album in this set is Tubby's Groove, recorded in December 1959 with Jazz Couriers pianist Terry Shannon and drummer Phil Seaman, along with new bassist Jeff Clyne. The full-length London Jazz Quartet album is here, as well as the first half of the Jazz Couriers' The Last Word, from 1959. It also includes six of the eight tracks from The Couriers of Jazz the remaining two kick off disc five. The remainder contains the EP The Eighth Wonder - Hayes also plays baritone, alto, vibes, and piano on the record - with bassist Phil Bates and drummer Bill Eyden. It is followed by four cuts - including Hayes' killer "Plebus" from an August 15 session - and capped off by a live date in February of 1958 that featured the band playing a spirited read of Scott's "Some of My Best Friends Are Blues" that carries over to the rest of the record, The Jazz Couriers in Concert, on disc four. Disc three begins in 1957 with the album Tubby Hayes and the Jazz Couriers Featuring Ronnie Scott, recorded on August 8, as well as an alternate of "On a Misty Night" from a Tempo anthology. The second also contains two tracks from the early Jazz Couriers, released on the historic Jazz at the Flamingo, recorded during in the summer of 1956. The first two discs here are almost entirely devoted to the Tubby Hayes Orchestra (actually an octet), whose dates were released on 7" EPs as well as the LPs British Modern Jazz Scene 1956 and After Lights Out. Some of the other notable players that recorded with him during this historic period are trumpeters Jimmy Deuchar and Dickie Hawdon, bassist Pete Blannin, drummers Lennie Breslaw and Tony Crombie, and, of course, saxophonist Ronnie Scott, to name a few. Admired by American and European players alike, he stands as one of the great masters of the horn, period. This whopping six-disc set comprises the early bop and hard bop solo output of tenor saxophone giant and bandleader (as well as a pianist and vibraphonist) Tubby Hayes, one of a handful of players who put British jazz on the map in the 1950s.

“ The album is called “Connection”. I've been working on it since before my last one came out. I could try and come up with some grand narrative to give it meaning and string it all together somehow, but really it’s just some deeper tracks I made that sat together well. There are Middle Eastern, Jazz and Techno influences in some of the songs. I was trying to make stuff that was a little more emotive. Here's a small narrative. It’s called Connection because I was seeking and becoming more comfortable with connection whilst making it, rather than keeping myself to myself like I have done in the past. But the flipside of that was a deeper awareness of grief and sorrow. This is why some of the tracks have some sadness. It was nice to collaborate with people that I really respect. Abdullah Miniawy has melancholy in his voice, and it complimented the track I gave him. Idris Rahman's saxophone helped me flesh out the eastern jazz element. I told him I like Tubby Hayes. Nah Eeto is an incredible rapper who brought a lot of energy to the front of the album and inspired me to experiment with my production in new ways. I always wanted to do some vocal house, and Omar helped me with that. The vocal melody came to me in a dream. I still worry that it’s from someone else’s tune and that I haven’t figured out who yet. Let’s see. I worked with Matt Littler again for the artwork. I told him “less grotesque, more serious” compared to the last LP. Maybe that’s also what I was going for with the music. I hope you enjoy it.“

TUBBY HAYES - THE LIFE BEHIND THE TENOR

Following on from the excellent documentary Tubby Hayes: A Man In A Hurry we now have a lovely book to feast our eyes upon. Titled Tubby Hayes: The Life Behind The Tenor and curated by MarK Baxter – the producer of A Man in A Hurry – along with contributions from Simon Spillett and Tubby’s son Richard Hayes the book is published by the wonderful Tangerine Press. Nobody has kept the Tubby flame alight more than these three men with Spillett already having produced a book on Hayes – The Long Shadow of the Little Giant: The Life, Work and Legacy of Tubby Hayes along with – until this current crisis hit – touring his own big band playing Hayes material. This project looks at the personal side of Hayes’ life with son Richard providing lots of material to put together a handsome scrapbook of Britain’s premier jazzman. Other contributions for this publication come from Julie Ross, Lee Cogswell Ed Gray, Tracey Coverley, Owen Harvey and the gent that is David Alexander . A special mention to the recently departed and much missed Steven Millington who had sent illustrations for the book. It looks absolutely superb and praise for this must go to Michael Curran of Tangerine Press in making such a lovely job of it all. Proper craftsman and no mistake. A book of this quality and beauty won’t be cheap but it is worth every penny that it costs now and what it will be worth in the future.
