We recently enjoyed making Uitsmijter for brunch, which is a Dutch dish that’s really simple--it’s an open-face sandwich of fried egg, Gouda, and ham--that’s meant to be a great dish to have when you’re tipsy and need food or hungover and need food. We had it after a lifting session, and it was delicious.

“There you are,” Wylan sighed.

He’d been waiting for Jesper to come back with lunch for two hours. The Van Eck office by the Church of Barter was an imposing building that spiraled upward to rival the Geldrenner’s clocktower. They worked on the top floor there three days a week, taking meetings and trying to grapple with the business – even after two years, the empire he’d stolen back from his father still felt impossibly large.

It felt even more impossible when he was hungry.

Things weren’t a complete loss, though: Wylan had managed to sketch some new factory floorplans while Jesper had been out, and he moved those papers away onto one of the armchairs that littered the private office, wiping the charcoal off his fingers.

They were trying to change how things worked in Ketterdam, but it was far more than an uphill battle. Sometimes, that meant upsetting people: like Councilmen who didn't approve of Wylan's plans to open up new harbors.

Jesper held up a bag of uitsmijter. He swung the door closed behind him with his hip, his pistol clattering against the polished wood. The other matching pistol was on the armchair beside the papers: they were also still working on putting down their weapons, one at a time.

“Sorry,” Jesper dropped the bag over the empty spot on the table. His words curled with the Kaelish accent that rarely ever showed itself. “There was quite a line.”

“A line?” Wylan frowned.

It was past three bells in the afternoon, the sun from the office’s bay windows was already beginning to sink near the horizon in the early winter. No one should be lining up for uitsmijter, which was why Jesper had suggested it in the first place.

“Yes,” Jesper shrugged. “Why don’t we get out of here?”

“Well,” Wylan was about to shrug it off – to say they should eat first – but he caught the red stain on the pistol at Jesper’s hip, stark against its pearl handle, and, “were you in a gunfight?”

“No.”

The answer came far too quick, and far too short. Wylan walked around the table, heart hammering. Hadn’t they talked about this? The uitsmijter shop was nowhere near the Barrel – so either someone attacked Jesper, or Jesper had taken a detour. Or, more likely: both a fight and a detour. His vest was too crooked on his shoulder, jacket far more crumpled than it had been when he’d left the office two hours ago, and was that a shirt in a different color?

They could deal with everything else later. For now, one thing at a time, and the most important:

“Were you hurt?” Wylan strode closer, reaching out to take Jesper’s hand, but –

Jesper jerked away, taking a step back. “I’m fine,” he insisted, lips pressed into a thin line. “Let’s get out.”

“Out?”

This wasn’t like Jesper. Yes, Jesper could be impulsive and brusque and rough, and some days even Jesper couldn’t bear to be touched, the world too full and his heart too hollow to do anything except run. Still, this wasn’t like Jesper – one staccato beat off tempo, and Wylan was stumbling to catch up, to try and understand –

“Yes,” Jesper said again, nodding toward the door he’d just closed. The gaudy laurels painted on it was really something they needed to replace soon. “Out.”

Again, too short and too quick.

Wylan stared at him, grey eyes he didn’t think he knew right now. He’d seen enough people change, seen enough people be twisted out of shape: in front of him, because of him. Until there were no more silver linings to hold onto, only slivers of lies he tricked himself into calling hope.

This wasn’t like Jesper.

This wasn’t –

The door swung open and –

Instinct kicked in. He made a dash for the other pistol on the armchair –

“Don’t!” Jesper’s voice rang out.

And it was Jesper’s voice, because it was Jesper standing in the doorway, shirt sticking wet on his shoulders and jacket gone and a cut dripping from his temple. And it was Jesper, too, standing in the office with Wylan, jacket askew and blood on his pistol.

verdict: uitsmijter is always 10/10 but sadly i didnt have cheese. kimchi scrambled egg is surprisingly good but this one could use some umami.... or salt the eggs some more. Maybe cheese truly is the missing link today.

Via het camera-icoon onder in je dashboard in de mobiele app ga je naar een Tumblr Live-tabblad waar je streams kunt bekijken die op dat moment live zijn. Boven je dashboard worden ook een aantal live livestreams weergegeven.

Zo lang je het netjes houdt, kun je streamen wat je wilt door op "Live gaan" te tikken: de eendjes in het park, een maffe sneeuwpop, je vervloekte borduursels, enz.

Streamen werkt met de voorste en achterste camera's van je telefoon, dus als je verlegen bent, kun je ook streamen zonder je gezicht te laten zien.

Je kunt bekende en vertrouwde kijkers de status van uitsmijter geven. Op die manier kunnen deze kijkers helpen om je stream te modereren door ongewenste gasten te verwijderen terwijl je live bent.

Tik op een live avatar om je als kijker bij die stream aan te sluiten, of je het blog nou volgt of niet.

Je kunt streamers tijdens de livestream cadeautjes sturen als je van de stream geniet.

Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame

Het volgende muzikale landmark diende zich vandaag aan in Cleveland: the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame. Hier keken we naar uit met torenhoge verwachtingen - en in de bange hoop dat het niet zou tegenvallen. Ons referentiekader bestond uit o.a. het Rock & Soul Museum in Memphis en het Musicians Hall Of Fame Museum in Nashville, dus de lat lag hoog.

Welnu, de 'Rock Hall' in Cleveland slaat werkelijk alles! We zijn er de hele dag geweest, vanaf de opening om 10:00 uur tot aan de sluiting om 17:00 uur en nog zijn we er niet uitgekeken en -geluisterd. En zelfs dan vallen er nog kritische noten te plaatsen over wat/wie wel en niet aandacht krijgen in het museum. Zo viel over David Bowie, Queen en 'the Eighties' nauwelijks iets te vinden, Prince bleef onder de radar totdat hij als uitsmijter in een complilatiefilm opdook en zo vallen er meer kritische noten te plaatsen. Maar dat heeft ook alles te maken met het feit dat de Rock Hall zo mechalomaan uitpakt over zoveel mogelijk artiesten, tijdperken, muziekbepalende steden etc. Als je probeert alles te omvatten, dan blijkt dat dit schier onmogelijk is. Maar wie goed leest, begrijpt dat er dus ook verschrikkelijk veel wel aan bod kwam. In de vorm van foto's, teksten, objecten (instrumenten, outfits etc) en heel veel geluid- en videomateriaal. Laat ik me er dus niet aan wagen om dit uitputtend op te sommen, het was domweg overweldigend en fantastisch. We hebben genoeg foto's gemaakt, een kleine compilatie is terug te vinden op de blog.

2023 recap #3: 3 x persoonlijk

Korea met Erik

Niet alleen bijzonder om samen met Erik te reizen, maar vooral ook vanwege de reden. Op zoek naar de roots van Anne, mijn adoptiezus die ik te lang heb weggestopt. Korea bleek mooi en we kwamen dichtbij haar geschiedenis. Jammer dat ze het zelf niet heeft kunnen zien.

Sarina studeert af

Vier jaar zijn voorbij gevlogen. Het was zo mooi om te zien hoe geïnspireerd Sarina was en hoe hard en gedisciplineerd ze werkte. Zowel voor haar stage, haar theoretisch onderzoek en vooral haar beeldend werk. Dat ze cum laude afstudeerde en een mooie baan vond was de kers op de taart.

Strammer Max

Mijn plannen voor sporten zijn vaak groter dan mijn lichaam toelaat. Blessures stapelen zich op en er komt weinig van lange afstanden lopen. Noodgedwongen ging ik op zoek naar nieuwe wegen. Roeien op de Rijn op de vroege zaterdagochtend maakt me echt gelukkig. Met een ploeg deed ik de Strammer Max tocht. Over de beneden- en boven-Rijn roeien naar Emmerich om daar een uitsmijter te gaan eten. De hele 59,5 kilometer was episch. Een uitgebreid verslag lees je op pagina 10-11 van het Jason tijdschrift.

De uitsmijter van vandaag !!

Vandaag heb ik ondervonden dat Oslo een zeer ideale fietsstad is. Als je wilt kun je allerlei routes volgen die dwars door de stad leiden via snelfietswegen, en ook als je daar geen gebruik van maakt voel je er heel welkom op de sykkel. Eerst dalend naar het Sentrum dat een Amerikaans stratenpatroon heeft. Er zijn heel rustige straten te vinden zoals de Kirkegata waar voor een mooi oud café een standbeeld staat van een Noorse toneelspeler, het heeft iets van een dorpstafereel weg. Dat kun je niet zeggen van het operagebouw iets oostelijker gelegen. Nondeju wat een bouwwerk, zo groot als negen voetbalvelden. Ik verlaat het Sentrum via westelijke richting en kom door een mooie wijk langs de ambassade van Saoedi-Arabië en Mexico. Op de app Openstreetmap denk ik een mooi weggetje gevonden te hebben langs een rivier, en dat klopt in het begin ook maar al snel moet ik zigzaggen tussen keien en boomstronken en doordat het gisteravond behoorlijk geregend heeft is het hier en daar een smurrie en soms glad. Een bruggetje biedt uitkomst, het pad is aan de overkant in ieder geval wat meer begaanbaar. Als ik van het pad weg ben kom ik door een straat waar prachtige houten huizen staan en schijnbaar is het nationale grasmaaidag want die hoor je regelmatig. Ik fiets langs de stadsgrens en bijna aan het einde van deze tocht wacht nog een uitsmijter… een stijging van 10% op nog geen 100 meter. In de Volkskrant stond vanmorgen een interview met studenten uit Oost-Europa die daar Nederlands volgen en aan hun werd gevraagd wat hun lievelingswoord is. Een student uit Roemenië vond krakkemikkig geweldig. Inderdaad dat is een heel grappig woord, maar of ik nu krakkemikkig ben door deze achtbaan (berg-og-dal-bane)? Over grappige woorden gesproken….
