i have to say its very interesting to see adopt dont shoppers spout their weirdo shit and then i go to their profile and they posts TONSS of cute puppy and kitten vids/pics…. of purebred animals. Like you know the oriental shorthair vids u just posted is from a breeder right, u are NOT finding one of those in the shelter lol. Like the dissonance is astounding, these people want nice purebred animals but theyre so caught up in the ~all breeders are bad~ mindset that they think these nice quality animals truly show up in shelters and one day theyll have their shot at adopting a rare breed lol.

i'm soooooo glad i got hazard first.
not just because he's a good mentor for puppies (although he is) and not really because he's improved my dog training skills (although he has)
he and k'seil are so different and they think and learn so differently; the skills i developed to work with hazard are either irrelevant or preinstalled for k'seil, and my problems with k'seil are largely not problems i ever had with hazard. i don't need to teach her how to eat outside, or how to refocus on me after getting distracted by the environment, or how to care about what i care about--
and that's what i'm grateful for, because k'seil is such a sport puppy and her problems are sport puppy problems. if she was my first dog i would've returned her already i would not be so able to help my clients and would not be so empathetic to them, because k'seil and sydney have a lot in common in terms of approach to training--sydney i could train for an hour. any context. any location. with kibble. she would be glued to my hand. i could be sloppy about my mechanics, push her, put social and spacial pressure on her to do what i wanted, and she would follow through--and, largely, so does k'seil.
so if those were the two dogs i had exposure to, because one is a wellbred aussie and the other was a puppy mill doodle, i would think that this was just dogs! dogs are like this! not being like this is something that should be fixed!
and spending 3 years with just hazard, who refuses to be pressured, who requires buy-in before doing difficult things, who cannot be lured or teased or tricked--and those aren't things i'm able to (or WANT to) change about him, they're just who he is, as a cattle dog/shar pei abomination--
like yes the training skills also good but just the understanding of the diversity of dog behavior, that not every dog is a border collie analogue--that's important

I hate both sides of dog breed drama.
every dog needs to be loved, the mutts, the wellbreds, the purebreds, and the not so well bred.
it is animal life, idk its just like dog eugenics and it freaks me out.
like yes I understand breed standards but please just be nice to the baby mutts and doodles you see. their owners too.

Anyway people continue to not put their money where their mouth is when it comes to these outcrosses, but they still wanna complain no one will play ball with them.
Meanwhile I'm 24-48 hours out from having this imported dog in my house who will be co-owned with someone who is striving towards lowering the average COI they put out to being roughly 20%, a dramatic improvement to the breed's average of 40-50%, and roughly a year out from having a *second* imported dog in my house co-own with *someone else* committed to doing the same thing. Annnnnnnd both of these people work and health test their dogs. Annnnnd the first dog comes from someone who has spearheaded multiple projects within the breed to encourage more diversity as well as a blood test study for cardio.
And I'm a practical nobody in the breed. I've had a rescue dog and a well bred dog and that's it. Rescue dog was a behavioral euth and wellbred dog accomplished a couple pet titles and then died of cancer before he turned 10. Best I've got is that UDC award which we were nominated for.
But I work my dogs. And I stand by people who are at least trying to fix things.
Maybe people would play ball with you if you stopped calling them snobs for asking you for more of a plan than "mix breeds make healthy" snd started, you know, working your dogs and striving to understand the breed.

Just going to ramble a bit because, if my friend is to be believed, what else is Tumblr for.
People who don’t know shit about proper dog husbandry and have never been to a show or had their hands on a dog need to shut up about proper ethics. If you don’t understand why a dog looks and is structured and acts the way it does then you shouldn’t have a say in it. People who cannot spell Brachycephalic and don’t know the actual history of Brachycephalic Breeds and the specific, likely now extinct, breeds that went into developing them shouldn’t have a say in the breeding, legality, or husbandry of them. The Dog Fancy hobby is dying and with the death of it comes the death and extinction of wellbred, well-structured dogs as a whole, mixed breed or not.
And, it is not just the actions of ARAs and the manipulated, unaware public that are leading to the death of the hobby. As someone new to the hobby that’s overly passionate about dogs, I have been talked down to by people in the hobby every step that I have taken further into the hobby, I will only put one of these examples here. I was originally interested in Beauceron and when I looked into the breed and talked to some people in the breed that were rude and put me off a little, but, I didn’t want to give up, the breed seemed to be everything I wanted; a driven, smart breed that excels at many many sports and has the desire to try anything with their owner at least once, and then I learned about the biggest source of drama in the breed, a well-known breeder knowingly selling a puppy to a zoophile and all the people supporting and shielding her from criticism. When I wanted to talk about it to find breeders who aren’t associated with her I was met with harassment and was told that it was “no big deal” and other statements undermining the situation. That was when I gave up on the breed.
I’m sure there are many good people and good breeders of Beauceron, but, as a sensitive and autistic 18 year old just looking to dip his toes into showing and sports at the time, I couldn’t handle that part of the community.
Then I talked to a delightful person who has and breeds Cardigan Welsh Corgis who pointed me towards Manchesters and told me to keep an open mind to breeds until I find the ones that click. They said that they had started with Manchesters and that Manchester people were very welcoming. This is true, every Manchester person I have spoken with, both in person and online, has been delightful. However, the Manchesters I had met, despite being wonderful dogs and the breed as a whole just being wonderful, didn’t quite click with me. The breeders and exhibitors and owners of Manchesters that I had met are the only reason that I had the courage to try again in the community and hobby as a whole.
Then, I joined many dog groups and talked to more people, reached out to some people about Japanese Akitainu, a breed I had adored since childhood, and they had been nothing but welcoming and encouraging. They helped me figure out what breeds would fit me best and connected me to some people to talk with and hopefully meet in person at a show so I can meet their dogs in person. The breeds they suggested were Kishu and Shikoku, both primitive breeds that mixed very well with my needs and even with most of my wants.
Then through them I found out about the Japanese Terrier, a terrier breed bred for companionship that still has that terrier spice in a small, around 11” to the shoulder, package. An alert dog that gets along with most other dogs and enjoys dog sports.
I hope someday to be a breeder for at least one of the following breeds as they have truly captured my heart, I don’t think any other breed could fit quite as well as what I’ve heard about these breeds could:
Kishu, Shikoku, Japanese Terriers, and/or Algarve Barrocal Dogs.
Now, you may be wondering about Algarve Barrocal Dogs as they aren’t really known outside of Portugal and I had not brought them up earlier in my ramble, well, this is because I found out about their existence completely on my own while I was learning about the culture that my father left behind. They are a medium sized, primitive hunting breed that comes from Barrocal in Algarve, Portugal.
Described as perfectly suited for the rough terrain of Barrocal, they were bred to be prolific hunters that are lively and accepting of other dogs, they should be tolerant with a “pyramid shaped” head. If I had to choose a breed they looked the most like I’d choose the Silken Windhound, but don’t think they’re interchangeable, there are several key differences. Algarve Barrocal Dogs are also not recognized by the AKC, UKC, or even the FCI yet, so in order to get involved with them I’d have to visit Portugal and track down the right people which I hope to do someday, they’re amazing dogs and if everything goes well I hope to bring them to the US and help them get recognized if I could manage and afford such a venture in the future
If I could afford and manage to breed all 4 breeds I would, however, it seems more likely that I’ll start with Kishu and Shikoku and see if I could handle more from there. I get to go to my second show ever the weekend of October 20th, it’s in my hometown, I’m hoping that some dogs of the breeds I’m interested in will be there this year, however, I’m aware that it’s a long shot and will continue to attempt to meet dogs and breeders from these breeds.
~~~
All of this to say, don’t talk on things you aren’t willing to listen to others who are more educated about, and if you choose to talk on something, don’t get pissy if someone corrects you respectfully. The hobby needs to pull together and be more welcoming, if we stay divided and not willing to talk about controversies and not willing to hold people accountable, we will fall and the breeds we love will have less and less good breeders keeping them healthy and stable. We should be nurturing people’s interest and fascination, not stomping them down for asking “stupid” questions or pointing out things and asking about why we do things the way we do.
I hope to be getting my first wellbred dog soon enough but, I know I can handle it. I know I’m prepared. I hope to see the hobby be what I know it can be, these bans will keep coming and affecting things for the worst if we don’t politely and respectfully educate the public, go out and talk about our dogs, help people find good breeders and be able to identify bad breeders and the shades of gray between, and encourage people to show and perform with their dogs instead of tearing them down for mistakes. I hope to see a community that’s less clique-y and more supportive of each other in the future.
Once I'm established with my dogs and have been around the block, absolutely I will be encouraging and helping new people handle, show, and do sports with their dogs. I may be a purebred snob but will never ever turn my nose up at new people who are willing and able to learn or even people wanting to argue. We're all just people who love dogs at the end of the day, we should help each other achieve the best we possibly can so we can do justice for all of the amazing breeds out there, even if some aren't personally our tastes. We all have things we can learn from each other and I cannot wait to learn even more about dogs and this amazing, yet nerve-wracking to get into, hobby!
recently i've seen an uptick in demonizing scottish fold breeding, due to FOCD (feline osteochondrodysplasia), the gene variant that gives folds their iconic ears. im very sleep deprived so im only going to give a basic rundown that i will hopefully word correctly but if anyone is genuinely interested i can go more into it,
FOCD is caused by a single gene variant in TRPV4, which causes the cartilage to change, giving the ears their fold.
a lot of the discourse i've seen is very surface level, showing xrays of homozygous cats with malicious FOCD, as all homozygous folds have, and acting as if all scottish folds will end up that way.
they won't, right? well, no, not necessarily. but it is true every scottish fold has FOCD, or else they wouldn't be scottish folds, and would be classified as scottish straights which i will get into later. also, homozygous means having 2 copies of the same allele for a trait, with heterozygous meaning you have 2 different alleles for it.
despite every fold having it, there are 3 "variants" of fold i will use to explain the situation. straights, as in scottish straights that do not have FOCD, homozygous folds, which i suppose you can compare to a double merle dog. if 2 folds are bred, the kittens will be homozygous, which causes malicious FOCD, which is extremely painful and can warrant euthanasia, and then there are heterozygous folds, which come from a fold x straight cat, or just any cat that isn't a fold. heterozygous folds have been shown to have much lower chances of developing malicious FOCD, but it does still happen. about that,
there have been very few studies with proven wellbred purebred folds, i can only think of one close right now, "Osteochondrodysplasia in Scottish Fold cats" R MALIK, GS ALLAN, CR HOWLETT, DE THOMPSON, G JAMES, C McWHIRTER and K KENDALL (1999).
pedigree information was available for nine of the ten cats studied, all should have been heterozygous based on their parentage. 8 were from fold x scottish matings but one was from a fold x british mating. all ten folds showed some degree of FOCD on xray but there was wide variation in the severity and rate of progress of the condition, ranging from two cats euthanized at 6 and 21 months, to the cats aged 4, 5, and 11 years who were from the breeding cattery  and were reportedly asymptomatic. the 11 year old had milder changes on xray than the 4 year old.
this study, being 25 years old, obviously doesn't fit today's standards i would say. it needs to be redone, with proven cats from well known responsible catteries. i have a couple more off the top of my head that aren't nearly as in depth, but provide useful information
what is the solution, and conclusion? are scottish folds inherently bad? well, as much as i hate to say it, we don't know. there isn't enough evidence to say yes, and not enough to say no for absolute certain. another study NEEDS to be done, preferably with CFA or TICA champions which definitely would weed out 99% of byb cats, although studying them aswell to compare is also crucial. i would say, the outlook is good, but rocky. the study has proven difficult to make happen, and i believe that ties into the overall attitude of most of the cat show world, but i may get into that some other time. in the meantime, responsible breeders should continue rigorous health testing before breeding, never breeding 2 folds together (including being wary of straights, as if you don't know the exact background of it, it may be a fold genetically that had it's ears stand back up in kittenhood), and soft-culling any cats that show any signs of FOCD that go past the ears. sillysealfan OUT
//every time someone sees my wellbred dogs and my client's wellbred dogs, who then asks if I "rescued" them I get an unholy amount of delight in saying no with the sassiest attitude possible. I didn't pull these dogs out a fire, and you've never done that either, Becky. You paid a shelter. I know you like to think it gives you holy points but it doesn't.
