hm. hm. generally i have nothing against the idea of going "what if this male character was a lesbian" or "hes a lesbian to me" or whatever i just also think sometimes when the character in question is a gay man and its a big deal that the character is a gay man canonically then maybe that just crosses into being kind of disrespectful. like theres nothing i can do or say to stop someone else from doing it but it just feels like maybe you shouldnt touch that. or at least be more mindful of how that looks.

For all these stand ups telling transphobic jokes with seemingly no tangible consequences to their overall career and wealth lately, unfortunately the best and only thing the audience can do is simply ignore them and not give them free press and not watch their special to lessen their power/leverage to be able to make another special on Netflix or some other widely used platform.

Most likely these stand ups are already paid a certain sum within their contracts before any streaming revenue comes in so the only thing audiences can do is to lessen their popularity and by not hate watching, tweeting about them, adding to data which is evidence that they use to determine their popularity which partly influences whether or not they get to make more specials and projects. Even though people are allowed to express their anger online and they are completely justified, in reality, at an economic and “show biz” standpoint, people are giving them what they want which is to be given attention and be talked about at all

Ultimately, the only power an audience member has is simply to hit a special or show economically, bc even if that person becomes hated, any press is good press if it turns a profit so that’s why hate watching never works to get something trashy cancelled and off the air
