guide to writing a desi james potter (and even for harry)!
(desi is used for south asians. meaning india + pakistan, afghanistan, bangladesh, bhutan, maldives, nepal, sri lanka. now i’m indian so i can only speak about that but a lot of the tips are the same. please research! and be respectful while writing them! i’ll try to include as much as i can here)
i've lived here my entire life so trust me.
and this is gonna be long. under the cut!
1. james potter can remain james potter
we don’t usually anglicize our names. don’t go finding obscure names starting with j that you can anglicize to james.
it kind of perpetuates the stereotype of indian names being very hard to pronounce. and britain fucked us over so no way in hell we'll be changing our own name to something easier for white people to pronounce.
instead you can make potters indian christians. i have a lecturer named veronica so i can assure you people in india have all kinds of names.
its a suggestion of course. but i have read fics where james has very traditional and religious names. no problem with that but its a little out of the loop and old fashioned. but if you want some help with finding names then don’t hesitate to ask.
2. where is he from
okay so now this gets interesting. there are a 28 states and 8 union territories. james potter can be from anywhere and not just gujrat and punjab and tamil nadu.
where’s my james potter from the gorgeous seaside state of goa? from the busy heart of metropolitan mumbai? from the amazing states of northeast? from bengal? from madhya pradesh? from kerela? from-
okay this is not a geography lesson but you get my point! there are so. many. places. he can be from any of them.
3. religion
india has a big population of hindus, muslims, christians, sikhs, zoraostrians, buddhists, jains etc. agnostic and atheist people exist too (hi).
your indian character can be any of those, not just hindu. it affects the indian sounding name you choose for him.
example: goan christian james can be james maharashtrian hindu james can be jai
but being religious or not, it doesn’t stop us from enjoying all the amazing festivals. you don’t know what i’d do to read a jegulus diwali fic ashdjfksdj
4. looks
now i know everyone’s like obsessed with atj (i can’t see him as james at ALL) or for desi james, dev patel (god, he’s the only desi character in all hollywood movies im so sick of his face. i have much better fancasts).
but just like names, our looks are also different. pale, wheatish, dusky complexion. again depending on which state. we usually have dark eyes and hair. and light eyes like blue, green or hazel are pretty rare.
5. food
curry doesn’t exist. repeat after me. curry doesn’t exist.
naan bread isn’t real, naan is A BREAD. and even though butter chicken is tasty asf, we don't eat this on a daily basis, my dudes. (#justiceforpavbhaji). but we do eat a LOT of biryani (its apparently the most ordered meal in india lol)
and i know you want to make the "im very white for spices" jokes but where are my desserts????? rasmalai? gulab jamun? rabdi? so cloyingly sweet ashdj
and we call tea, chai and it can be sweet and spicy.
it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i can’t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesn’t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.

In Defense of a Black Cyclops
In case my username didn’t make it clear, the single most anticipated visual project for me is the MCU’s interpretation of the X-Men, which hasn’t even been announced yet [officially]. And ladies and gents, I have found your Cyclops:
Tumblr media
Good ol’ Alfred Enoch, who we all know from Harry Potter and How to Get Away With Murder. If you’re not familiar with HTGAWM, know that his character goes from the de facto leader of the ragtag (murderers) and most cherished protege of Viola Davis’ Professor X to taking more of a grimdark turn after his girlfriend’s death. Sound at least somewhat familiar?
Enoch also embodies the physicality of the character well, seeing as to how he’s “slim”, 6′4(!!), black, and notoriously lanky. Wait, one of these isn’t like the others.
In general I hate fancasting. Everyone generally picks from the same pool of about 30 actors (Peeps, neither Taron nor Daniel is a good Wolverine choice. Argue with your mother!), and most all of it is based on physicality, except when it absolutely should be (like say, choosing a ~5′10 dark-skinned black woman for Storm).
And I think there’s some malarkey afoot. I think there needs to be some serious consideration on part of fancasters and actual casting agents alike to rethink race when it comes to the [white] X-Men, especially since they’re the X-Men of all teams. So I’ll make the case for a black Cyclops:
1. There is no quota on Black X-Men: There’s a bug in your ear that’s been whispering lies to you for years, it says something to the effect of “We need a black person on the team for diversity. How bout Storm?” And you’ve gotten complacent. Storm does not have to be the only black person on your X-Men roster.
2. The X-Men represent diversity: Iceman is gay, Cyclops and Prof. X are disabled (sorta), there are plenty of women, oh and everybody except Storm is white. Of the A-List X-Men, there is only *one* POC character. I’d argue that an MCU X-Men needs to champion diversity like never before.
3. The X-Men represent minority struggle while being mostly white: There’s a cognitive dissonance in the metaphor that has always been there, and for the most part, nobody cares. To appeal to the white readers of the 60′s, the X-Men were all initially white. That way, the message of the mutants could be related to the audience with a familiar face. We don’t need to approach the problem that way in 202?
4. Just because that’s the way it’s always been, doesn’t mean that’s the way it should be: The first line of defense. Sorry, that will never be a good justification for literally any idea. It’s time for some more critical thinking.
5. We don’t all want to be Bishop: So say you’re white and you have a kid who for his birthday having a costume party. You’ve bought some X-Men costumes and you want each kid to pick one. 9 white kids and one black kid show up to your house. As the kids deliberate who gets what costume, be it Cyke or Wolvie or whatever, you yell at everybody to “STOP!”, point to the one black kid and tell him “You’re gonna be Bishop. That’s it, end of story!”
We don’t all want to be Bishop. The black child could have the best Cyclops interpretation within him, but you’ll never know if you don’t let him try. And that’s no different from the Black actors of Hollywood. There’s no reason why all of the black talent should *have* to compete for the role of Bishop or Storm, which I’ve discussed, while Joe Schmo can walk up and audition for literally anybody he wants.
Jharrel Jerome is 23 and has an Emmy to his name. He needs to be in the MCU in some capacity, period. Stephan James is another. How bout Damson Idris. Ashton Sanders. But no, no, let’s fancast Dacre Montgomery or Ansel or Joe Keery again as [Human Torch, Wolverine, Iceman, Angel, I’ve literally seen it all.]
6. Nobody wants to see the B-team if it comes down to it. The next line of defense from your racebending naysayers after “That’s the way it’s always been!” is “Well, what about Psylocke, Bishop, Forge and Jubilee?” who are otherwise known as B-tier X-Men. The problem is, we’ve got limited time and limited spots.
So since the X-Men is all about wonky metaphors that make half sense, let me give you another: Let’s say somebody approaches you and says “Hey buddy, I got two free concert tickets for ya! You can either see Michael Jackson Sings the Blues, or you can go see Justin Timberlake. Free of charge!”
Now, are you used to MJ singing the blues? No! Do you have a problem with going to see Justin Timberlake? No, he’s fine on a Wednesday! He had that one little diddy we liked that one time. We’d love to see him eventually! But are you gonna say, “fuck that, I’m going to see MJ Sings the Blues” regardless? Hell yes, because that’s still Michael Jackson. He’s gonna give the same amazing performance he always does, it’s just gonna be the blues. And speaking of blues...
7. Black is not Blue, Brown is not Blue: Raise your hand if you’ve ever heard this one: “I don’t care if you’re black, white, purple, or green, I’m going to treat you all the same!” I will not say all have this intention, but some fancasters have noticed that the racial diversity is kinda low within the A-List X-Men, so they oh-so-generously give the following roles to a black or brown person: Iceman, Nightcrawler, Beast.
Notice the pattern? It’s a microaggression, and it’s bullshit. What these fancasters are implicitly telling you is that, yes the actors will be black or brown, but when the action starts we can ignore that. They’ll be blue by then. In other words, you in fact do care if they’re purple or green. Nobody will cry foul if Dev Patel gets to play Nightcrawler (because that’s a common one I see), but should Anna Diop be Starfire or Michael B. Jordan be Human Torch, I bet there’d be backlash. Oh wait. If that’s you, please stop acting like you actually value diversity. You don’t want to see black or brown skin, period. Unless of course, it’s Storm (refer to point #1).
But wait, there’s more! When brown characters get whitewashed in these movies, it’s crickets! So eventually it’s revealed implicitly that proclaimers of point #4 only care about it one way.
8. Professor X should not be black if you’re not willing to change anyone else: The next line of defense is that some people say the professor should be black, if anybody HAS to be racebent. Something something MLK Jr., Civil Rights or some shit. Number one, I’m not reducing Professor X to being a magical negro for 9 white people (and Storm!) who for all intents and purposes get to have all the action. Number 2, the Professor X/MLK/Magneto/Malcolm X comparison is an oversimplifying disservice to ALL FOUR of those people. I hate that line whenever I see it, please watch a documentary my friends.
9. The Candidates for Racebending: For me, the A-List X-Men are Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Angel, Beast, Wolverine, Storm, Gambit, Rogue, Colossus, Nightcrawler, and Kitty Pryde. Now, who should be exempt from the racebending? Storm, she’s our designated minority. Gambit, he’s Cajun and they’re white (generally speaking, that’s a fun bit of research). Wolverine, Colossus, and Nightcrawler, because their nationality/ethnicity was the whole point of the Giant-Size premise in the first place. Angel, because his character embodies a privileged white male. Beast and Iceman, I don’t care one way or another (Point #7).
That leaves Cyclops, Rogue, Jean Grey, and Kitty Pryde. Now Jean Grey is a redhead, and we all know that every time a redhead is racebent people sharpen their pitchforks (Mary Jane, Wally West, Iris West), so I will cede the ground on Jean if only so that my ginger friends can get their rep. Kitty Pryde is Jewish, but Jews of color exist. Rogue is from the South. And Cyclops is, well, just Cyclops. That makes those three characters good options for more diversity. But allow me to make the case for Cyclops, specifically.
10. It’s not just diversity for diversity’s sake: If you had to pick who the main character of the X-Men is supposed to be, most would say Cyclops. And so in a series that highlights racial discrimination in society, it makes sense that our main character be black. While changing Cyclops’ skin color should not change who he is as a character, it *should* recontextualize it. Now, as an eventual increasingly radical leader of the X-Men, Cyclops would evoke real life figures such as Colin Kaepernick or, shall I say, Martin Luther King, Jr.
Not that most X-Men fans and writers truly think about what it means to be black anyways. Storm’s minority status is almost always put through the lens of her being a mutant and not her being a black woman. In other words, you can’t argue that making a character black will fundamentally change his or her character when you haven’t even analyzed the racial context of the black character(s) you already have. Another concept that the MCU X-Men should tackle: intersectionality.
11. Representation matters: I have to say it: Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther hit different. And now he is tragically gone. At the end of the day, the MCU moving forward is down its most prominent black male superhero. Which has implications beyond just the movies themselves.
The women are in good hands. Shuri, Okoye, and Nakia are badasses in Wakanda, Valkyrie is ruling Asgard, Storm is almost assuredly on the way, RiRi Williams has already been cast, and Monica Rambeau is here and she’s not even at her most glorious yet. That doesn’t even include variable Δ, or the number of characters who can and will be racebent. And Ill note again that to me, Gamora doesn’t count, because she’s green (#7 really pisses me off because it’s so blatant. I hate it). Of course from a behind the camera perspective we love black women getting work.
The men are a completely different story. Imma just go out and say it, I can’t stand Falcon and War Machine [in the MCU] because they’re not characters, they’re just two of a slew of MCU minority sidekicks who have essentially been at the beck and call of Captain America and Iron Man, respectively. You cannot tell Falcon’s story without mentioning Cap. The reverse is not true. There’s a whole essay that could be and have been written on “Minorities in the MCU, pre-Black Panther”. Remember, there’s a reason BP made so much noise in the first place.
So excluding those two we have, let’s see, M’Baku, Blade, and Fury who aren’t exactly the most superheroic superheroes, Eli Bradley is proooobably coming, I doubt Miles Morales is coming (because he’s just Peter Parker in the MCU), Luke Cage(?) Bishop(??), Sunspot(???), Blue Marvel(????). Not only are they not A-List, I would not put money on any of them being in the MCU any time soon.
Cyclops is thee Captain America of the X-Men. He’s the frontman. He’s the poster boy. He’s the “boy scout”, which in other words means he’s the hero, if there has to be one. It would mean a lot right now, and specifically *right now*, if he were to be black. The MCU needs it. It NEEDS it.
12. The X-Men is the Summers Story: I’ll even make the case that if just one character needs to racebent, then it should be Cyclops, because that of course implies that other related characters need to be black because half of the X-Men universe is in fact a part of the Summers family.
So now Cable is black. Corsair is black. Havok is black. And one of the most central stories in the X-Men mythos, the Summers family drama, is now a black family drama set in space or the future or where the fuck ever. The concept is boundary pushing. When white families have drama in the media, it gets to be Game of Thrones or Star Wars, while when black families have drama in the media, it has to be black people arguing in a kitchen or living room about their various earthly traumas (I’m @’ing you, Mr. Perry). I mean, that’s all fine and good often times, but I want my black family drama in space, dammit.
And again, this is the X-Men, the series that’s all about *minorities* and their struggle, so again, why not?
Oh, and I’ll even throw out a Havok fancast for you: How bout Jharrel Jerome?

Hi! I just saw the recent anons youve gotten about the gray area of drawing crowley as a POC and ive had my own issues with it for other artists but at least for me its only really a Problem if they Only draw the demon as a POC and not any of the “good” or angelic chs. I understand where the anons r coming from and i totally agree with the recent anon saying not depicting complex moral chs as poc is robbing us of being multi faceted humans! That was a great point ! (1/2)
But i just wanted to personally message u to say that as an asian american, I completely fell in love with your crowley and azi !! I love them with my whole soul and seeing a ch like crowley, who i see alot of myself in, it was moving for me to see him as asian! Since asian people dont get alot of rep that isnt a stereotype or a trope, whenever an artist decides to depict a popular ch as asian i cant contain my happiness ! So please do wat makes u comfortable but know this asian loves ur crowley
Not going to lie, you almost made me cry, so thank you for your kind words.
I’ve been VERY critic towards people who draw Crowley being “vaguely” POC because for me it meant that they didn’t actually care, as long as he didn’t look white (not caring if his facial features were correct, just a white face with dark skin and you can call it a day). Or recently, those posts about the way people draw him with an exaggerated nose, and how antisemitic that is. So it would be very hypocritical of me to just ignore someone’s feeling about me drawing him asian.
To be honest, that anon seemed sketchy at best but I still want to think they were real, call me naive.
When I fancasted Daniel Dae Kim as my Crowley and Chiwetel Ejiofor for Aziraphale I did it for two reasons: I wanted them to be POC because, even if I’m white, I can see that the lack of representation is disturbing, and the second one was because they matched the descriptions of the book almost perfectly to me. Chiwetel is a fancy English man that kind of looks chubby but is also pretty strong (just like my hc for Zira, you know, chubuf) and with the right clothes look like a librarian. And Daniel… he’s suuuuper handsome and elegant? good cheekbones, perfect hair but when he smiles he looks like an angel… And have you seen him wearing a suit? James Bond material. Perfect match for my Crowley.
I learned a lot while drawing them, I tried to be very respectful and not treat them like caricatures. For example, I used to draw Finn (you know, from Star Wars) blushing until Iearned that you can’t see the flush if the skin is dark, or that eyelashes point downwards on asian people’s eyes, or that the skin of the palms and feet and lips of black people has a different colour, or how the facial structure changes… idk, lots of things. I tried to learn and to listen to people. I don’t just draw them as steriotypes, I draw them using my fancast for them, being very careful that they look like the actors and not just… just like a fucking joke, if you know what I mean.
But eih, I’m white and I’m sure I do lots of racist shit that I don’t even notice and I also know it’s not others people job to teach me how to things, but I love when people point things out to me because it means they are giving me an oportunity to change and improve. Again, I know is not your job, but I appreciate the help instead of receiving anon hate before I have the opportunity to know what I did wrong. By all means, if after all of this I still ignored their concerns of course you are more than welcome to insult and attack me.
So yeah, this whole thing is very upseting to me because I honestly don’t know what to do, I tried to do my best and I still offended someone. I don’t want to draw him white because we have enough of that and I can’t draw him being POC because I feel like no matter what I do is going to be wrong. And I’m also trying to make this about me and that’s even more racist so I think I’m going to stop now… And my anxiety and the heat are killing me oops
Thank you for your kind words, have a nice day, dear.

Author’s Notes for The Other Road
So I used to love to read these things on LJ WAY back in the day.  My fave authors would write these lengthy essays about why they did certain things and explaining hidden meanings etc.
I definitely put a lot of thought into The Other Road, especially the music so I thought I’d break things down.  I do hope you’ll take a second to read my ramblings but massive spoilers ahoy!
REASONS FOR A SCREENPLAY
So why not just another fic?  Because I never had before.  Because I am a very visual writer - I see scenes and hear dialogue in my head.  It was actually a really natural way for me to write, in the end.
SETTING/TONE
My ultimate goal here was to make something that fit into Luca’s comments about being “different tonally”.  NYC is the polar opposite of Crema - gritty, loud, packed with people.  I set it in late winter/early spring, that weird transitional time when it is neither one nor the other (this represents their relationship too - they aren’t ready to commit but they aren’t ready to let go either).  Also, the weather would be so different from the lush greens of CMBYN.  Instead, we’d get concrete, naked trees, gray skies.  Summer is very much over.
Luca also mentioned wanting to deal with the AIDS crisis in the sequel.  I wasn’t about to give either E or O AIDS (and Luca better fucking not either), so there quickly appeared this idea of Elio taking care of a dying best friend instead.  The line from the book “I wish I had a friend I wasn’t destined to lose” almost ended up in a scene but it was still very much there as a theme for me.  All summer in Crema (in the book) Elio’s parents are trying to get him to make friends, spend more time with people - so I wanted to give him a best friend, someone who he had confided in, someone who loves him just as unconditionally as Oliver but differently.  Josh also allowed for a splash of humor.  Fancast: Josh Hutcherson, btw.
He basically replaced the missing Vimini for me, that same kind of preternatural understanding of love and relationships.
I set the “movie” in 1988 because that was the year AZT came out.  This was really the first time patients with HIV/AIDS had hope.  So Josh does too, I think.
MUSIC
Music is obviously a huge part of my life, a huge part of Elio’s life, and a huge part of CMBYN.
The classical music, for the most part, is either New York based, 20th century minimalism (inspired by Luca’s use of John Adams in the original) Phillip Glass, Steve Reich etc or early 20th cent. French/French influenced (Prokofiev) music.  This pays homage to Elio/Timmy’s French side.  Poulenc, Ravel, Satie.
Bernstein is not minimalist, but it doesn’t get much more New York than him.  I’ve also just recently played the On The Town and the Ravel Piano Concerto and new those had to be included.
While in the first movie, the piano is always alone, I made sure all the repertoire was piano in a chamber music or orchestral setting (Brahms sonata, Poulenc Sonata etc), representing Elio’s fleshed out life.  He’s not this isolated kid anymore - he has good friends, a career (more on that later.)
The only time I list a solo piano piece is for the morning shower scene - the Satie Gnossienne.  This is meant to represent Elio’s knowledge that Oliver will soon be leaving and he’ll be alone once more.
Obviously 80′s music was going to play a huge part in it this too, but no way Elio was going to be listening gross 80′s pop.  So I went very included Morrissey at the opening to give us that sort of brooding, British pop, but also very of-the-time sound.  Also, it was not such a subtle hint with the lyrics “Why do you come here?  When you know it makes it hard for me?”
The words for all the songs are pretty monumental, in fact.  I won’t go into detail here but check out the lyrics if you’re interested!
The one song I do want to talk about is the Sufjan Stevens song “The Predatory Wasp is out to Get Us!”  He’s there for obvious reasons, but I was listening to the album Illinoise on a long drive and this song just destroyed me with the exact perfect tone for the ending.
I didn’t want them to depart with the same bleakness they arrived with and this song with the flutes and accordion and rich over laying of melodies was perfect.  Once again, the words ended up being mind bending-ly perfect:
We were in love, we were in love... I can wait I can wait
As soon as I heard it, there was this vision of Elio at the Met, just having said goodbye to Oliver but smiling.  Oliver driving down the road going back to his parallel life, but with hope.  Thanks, Sufjan.
PLOT POINTS OF INTEREST
Just a few final thoughts in no particular order.
Elio may gripe about his career but for some one just 1 year out of conservatory, he is killing the freelance scene in NYC.  I have friends who are twice his age who’d be happy for some of those gigs I gave him.  But I think that plays into his spoiled nature, having been the prized, privileged only child, so he can’t see that.  At the same time, I have a feeling Elio might be going back to Grad school or something soon to really make a go of a solo career.  (Sequel #2! lol)
There is no fucking way a security guard would let Elio and Oliver onto stage at Avery Fisher but whatever!  Willing suspension.  lol
I wanted to include flashbacks to scenes from James Ivory’s original screen play that ended up not making the cut.
Can we just talk about how happy I am I got Cor Cordium in there?
The infamous dancing scene in CMBYN kills me because it’s the first time Elio desperately craves closeness to Oliver, but the closest he can get is on the dance floor.  So I NEEDED them to dance together.  I basically just envisioned every dance scene from QAF writing that part. :)
I wanted to pay homage to the book and the fact that in the book their relationship really starts when they start going running together every morning - this is why they go to the running track in Central Park.  Just a nod there.
The first scene with Oliver and Josh establishes that Oliver is basically still paying for his relationship with Elio because he still can’t move on.  Yes he’s married with kids, but it still haunts him and he realizes over the next day with Elio that it always will. This is a blessing and a curse.
I also wanted to give us explicit sex.  You’re welcome.  Hopefully Luca won’t cut it this time. :)
There was a while where I was going to explore the idea of Elio basically having become celebate - his friends calling him Il Popa (The pope).  At a way to avoid getting sick but also because he, at the end of the day, wanted something like his parents have, like what Oliver and his wife have, what they COULD have had.  Something meaningful and committed.  In the end, it just didn’t really seem important so I let it go.
Also: Billowy.  I’m proud.  lol
Very much like CMBYN, I wanted them to be happy together.  After the movie and the way Luca, Armie and Timmy portrayed them on screen, I think they are just ridiculous boys who love each other’s company - so yeah, they eat pizza, they go dancing, they take selfies with a Polaroid.  They’re still young and in love even after the passing of time.
I loved the idea of ending with the “Don’t say you didn’t know” because to me that is Oliver’s way of saying I love you.  Don’t say you didn’t know exactly how I felt - that you meant everything.
FINAL THOUGHTS
I want to thank everyone who is SO incredibly kind to me about my writing and for interacting with me here on Tumblr.  This fandom has been a beautiful place and has helped me produce some of the writing I am most proud of.
I promise to keep writing about Elio and Oliver as long as you promise to keep reading!  xo

Ch 22: Sirius’ Remark
"Did you hear those third years talking about their house elves?" James said as the four boys sat down for breakfast in the Great Hall.
"Do people really treat their house elves like that?" Peter asked timidly, and he gave a little shudder. "Daily floggings and such?"
"My family doesn't," James replied, puffing his chest out with pride. "Septimia took care of me when I was a baby – she's my friend. I've never seen Father beat her, and I wouldn't let him if I did."
His eyes blazed defiantly as he looked around at his friends, but none of them questioned him. Sirius' cheeks flushed slightly but none of the other boys noticed.
"I think the whole practice is disgusting," Remus said quietly, pushing his beans around on his plate.
"Why?" Sirius asked, speaking at last.
"It's slavery," Remus answered, looking at Sirius like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
"But they're not even human," Sirius argued, and James and Remus both furrowed their brows.
"So?" Remus challenged.
"So they're inferior!" Sirius asserted. "House elves, giants, merpeople, werewolves, goblins – I'm surprised we don't make more of them work."
"They still have rights!" Remus replied hotly, his cheeks flaming.
"The right to exist, maybe," Sirius scoffed. "Though I wish Kreacher wouldn't."
Remus stared at him with his mouth agape and his eyes bright with fury. James was looking at Sirius like he'd never seen him before, and Peter scooted slightly father away from him at the bench, as though he were afraid his views might be contagious. Remus shoved away from the table, grabbing his bag and swinging it violently over his shoulder. He stalked off without another word, though even from behind you could see that the tips of his ears were red and his body was practically vibrating with rage. James flashed Sirius a dirty look as he shoved a stray book back into his bag and stood up, grabbing a piece of toast that was topped with beans.
"That's not okay, mate," he said to Sirius, and then turned and followed Remus out.
Peter resumed eating his breakfast in silence, but Sirius felt as though the food he had been eating had turned to ash, and he pushed his plate away, staring at his hands in his lap. He felt like he had monumentally messed up, but he didn't understand. He had never heard anything else, not from anyone in his family, not even Andromeda. He felt confused and angry with himself and angry with his friends.
"Come on," Peter said quietly, not making eye contact, "we don't want to be late for McGonagall's class."
Sirius grabbed his bag and stood with Peter, and the two of them made their way to transfiguration in silence.
Neither James nor Remus acknowledged Sirius for the rest of the day, and Peter only spoke to him when absolutely necessary. But the time dinner was over, Sirius felt alone and very unhappy. Back in the Gryffindor common room, he sat at a table in the back corner writing a letter to Andromeda. A second year girl with tanned kin and dark hair sat across from him and took her books and a roll of parchment out of her bag. Sirius watched her curiously, surprised that she hadn't said anything to him. After a few minutes, she noticed him staring at her, and raised an eyebrow at him.
"Can I help you?" she asked, all sass.
"You didn't ask if it was alright to sit her," he answered, and she snorted out a laugh at his response.
"I'm a second year," she explained, "and you're only a first."
"What if I was waiting for my friends to come over?"
"Your friends are over there," she answered, shrugging and jerking her head in the direction of James, Remus and Peter. "Don't know what happened but it seems like they don't want to sit with you today."
"Why don't you have your own friends to sit with?" he said, eyes narrowing.
'Tristan is in Hufflepuff and Emmeline is at quidditch practice," she replied with another shrug, begin to scratch out her homework on the parchment in front of her. "Benjy is alright, but he can be kind of annoying to do homework with, he's just so smart."
"Oh," he said, not sure what more to say.
"Marlene, by the way," she offered, without looking up at him.
"I'm Sirius," he echoed, but he turned to look at his friends, who were laughing at some joke.
"So what happened?" Marlene asked, raising her eyebrows, though she kept her eyes focused on her work.
"Its…" Sirius began, not sure how to tell her the story without alienating yet another person. He found, however, that once he started, he couldn't seem to stop, needing to get everything out of his system. Marlene listened without interruption, and her face was unreadable the whole way through. When he finally fell quiet, she said nothing at first, the scratching of her quill filling the silence between them, but when she reached the end of the roll, she laid it down and looked up at him, fingers clasped on the table in front of her.
"You're a Black, right?" she considered, and her voice held no trace of accusation much to his surprise. "That's one of those old wizarding families?"
"Yes," he answered sullenly.
"I'm guessing that's the attitude your family takes?" she questioned, and he nodded in response.
"It's not like I think we should beat them all left and right," Sirius argued. "Well, Kreacher deserves his punishments, but only because he's horrid! But if they're doing a good job…"
"What you said, about non-human species being inferior," Marlene frowned at him, "its, well, it's a very old world kind of view. I'm not surprised that it's what you've been brought up to think, a lot of old, traditional pureblood families still believe that. But things are changing, and a lot of people think that those old families are out of touch. House elves, merpeople… they're sentient beings, Sirius, they have social structures and relationships, and they're like us in so many ways. Just because they look different or speak different languages or have different kinds of magic, it doesn't make them inferior to us. They think and speak and feel, just like us. They're not animals."
"How do I fix it?" he asked, with another glance toward his friends.
"Well for starters, you need to actually understand and believe what I've just told you," she answered. "You should read some of the debates about what defines a beast and a being, and see what you think. And then you need to apologize to them, explain that your ignorance led you to make a highly offensive statement, but that you want to become more educated on the subject."
"Okay," Sirius agreed, and he began shoving his belongings into his bag. "Thank you, Marlene."
"Where are you going?" she asked him, and he stood and grabbed his bag.
"The library!" he answered, somewhat excitedly. "I've got a lot of reading to do."
She laughed as he hurried away through the portrait hole. Sirius spent hours scouring the library for everything he could find about the rights of beings and beasts, and once he had a stack that was piled above his head, he found himself a table, and began to pour through the documents. When curfew arrived, he checked out as many of the books as Madam Pince would allow, and he settled himself in a chair by the fireplace, reading until he fell asleep, and then jolting himself awake and reading some more.
Peter was the one who found him in the morning, sometime around 6am, before anyone else had come down for breakfast. He shook Sirius awake, and as Sirius blinked the sleep from his eyes, he saw Peter's gaze scan over the books that had fallen from Sirius' grasp while he dozed.
"Come on, you should change before breakfast," Peter said quietly, and Sirius stood and stretched his arms high above his head.
"No, I should wait until the others have gone down to the Great Hall," Sirius answered in a dejected voice, "they won't want to see me."
"Oh stop, just apologize and it'll be fine. You're not the world's worst monster or anything, you're just ignorant, so just get over yourself," Peter huffed, crossing his arms.
His words took Sirius by surprise, and he was refreshingly startled by the suggestion that maybe he was not a horrible failure of a person, though he knew his family would strongly disagree. With Peter's encouragement, Sirius marched up the stairs and into the dormitory, where Remus was already knotting his tie and James was just stirring from sleep, his hair even messier than it was after he tried to comb it. He cleared his throat carefully, and Remus looked up quickly before returning to the task of properly doing up his tie, but James fixed his dark eyes on Sirius and didn't look away.
"I just... I wanted to say that I'm sorry," Sirius said, his eyes fixed on the floor as he spoke. "I'm an idiot and I don't know anything about what I'm talking about, and it was an incredibly stupid thing to say, I know that now, and I'm trying to learn more to better myself and to improve my outlook on the world."
He thought it sounded quite eloquent in the end, rather better than the bumbling apology that he thought would spill out, and if he hadn't been so worried that it wouldn't be enough, he would probably be very proud of himself.
"Well, I think that's about as fair as you can get," James replied, standing from his bed and clapping Sirius once on the back as he walked toward the bathroom they shared.
Sirius gave him a weak smile, a little bit of relief settling in his gut. He glanced up at Remus, but the other boy was still not looking at him, now focused on pulling his shoes on, though he was trying to put them on the wrong feet, which was Sirius' only indication that he had heard and been at least a little bit affected by his words.
"Other way round, mate," he offered helpfully as he sat down on the edge of his four poster, which was settled in between Remus and James' beds.
He reached into his trunk and pulled out a fresh uniform, tugging off the clothes he had slept in and replacing them with clean ones. He ran one hand carelessly through his curls, glancing in the mirror he had placed on his nightstand to make sure that his hair lay just right. Never let them see you cry, that's what his father always said, always look your best, even if you feel your worst. It was, perhaps, one of the few things Sirius and his father agreed on - displaying your vulnerability made you a target, but if you look like you own the world, well then you probably will.
Throughout the whole day, things between Sirius and James returned to normal, joking and laughing and occasionally mocking Snivellus, but Sirius couldn't help the lead knot in his stomach every time he looked at Remus, who still had not said so much as a word to him. Remus' silence felt moderately less hateful, instead more... moderately chilly, but Sirius still wished his friend would forgive him. It wasn't until the four of them sat on the sofas by the fire later that night and Sirius pulled out one of the books from the library that Remus finally spoke.
"Is that - is that a book about werewolf rights?" he asked, not at all hiding the surprise in his voice.
"Yeah, I... I thought I should become more educated before I talk about things like this," Sirius answered, studying Remus' face.
"And what do you think now, having read more about werewolves?" Remus questioned, and Sirius could hear in its tone that it was a loaded question, but there was more too, a kind of thinly veiled contempt that Sirius couldn't quite understand.
"I think it's a complicated issue," Sirius replied, choosing his words carefully. "I mean, int he case of werewolves, they are dangerous, when they're transformed, so you need to have certain precautions in place. But they're also people, normal wizards like you and me, ninety-nine percent of the time, and they deserve to have the same freedoms, the same place in society, and not be thought of as monsters."
"That's quite the change from yesterday," Remus noted, but his voice sounded more optimistic than before.
"I've learned a lot since yesterday," Sirius answered, locking his eyes on Remus and trying to convey through them all the sincerity in his statement.
"Okay," Remus said, with a slight smile, and Sirius felt something click into place.
He knew in that moment that they were okay, that he was forgiven, at least for this transgression, and that things with his friends could go back to normal. But he also knew that he couldn't become complacent. His conversation with Marlene the night before had enlightened him to how much his family had taught him that he needed to unlearn, and it was a process that would take time and effort. But Sirius knew that he wanted that, to cast off every last vestige of his family's bile and become his own person with his own views, and so, instead of joining James in a game of Exploding Snap, he picked up his book again and he continued to read.

*answers include it makes some want to engage with the Severus Snape fandom more, somewhat affects, sometimes affects, takes time and effort away from sharing love and ideas, leads to avoiding or ignoring haters, used to but anymore, and leads to worrying about attacks.
Now for the open ended questions:
 21. What traits do you value the most?
Common responses were honesty, intelligence, loyalty, kindness and courage, with most of answers having a variation of these four. Other responses include humour, ambition, social justice awareness, hard work, creativity, resourcefulness and reliability.
I find it interesting that Severus Snape shares some of these traits.
 22. How old were you when you first read Harry Potter?
Majority of the responders were between the age of 10- 20. A significant number were below the age of 10. There were a quite a number of people over the age of 30. The oldest responder was in their 50s. A few couldn’t remember the exact age. The average age was 13 years old.
 23. How old were you when you first realised you liked Severus Snape?
The aim of this question is to know the average amount of time it took for fans to become attached to Severus Snape. On average, it took 3 years. The mode was 2 years. Take into account the years between book releases, individuals taking time to finish the books and Severus’ character before the Prince’s Tale.
 24. What do you like about Severus Snape?
Many of you said everything. Common answers include his wit, honesty, resilience, loyalty, courage, intelligence, perseverance, complexity, and redemption. Inversely some have said they liked his temper, bitterness, insecurities, coldness towards others, pettiness, lack of hygiene, and physical unattractiveness. Hilariously, someone referred to him as Walter White in reverse as he is first a spy who is forced to take a Chemistry like job as part of his cover. His backstory was another thing that attracted fans particularly his history of being bullied and abused.
 25. What do you dislike about Severus Snape?
Many said nothing. Common answers include his treatment of his students, ill temper, harshness, pettiness, inability to move on from his past, lack of relationship with others, and immaturity. That he joined Death Eaters is a response that showed up a handful of times. Some of the answers were basically saying it was annoying that he died. Quite a few felt J K Rowling didn’t really do much in terms of his redemption. Others felt he was too loyal to Dumbledore and Lily. Funny answers include that he didn’t destroy Umbridge, the creepy jars of pickled animals in his office, that he died at all, he isn’t real (many have also that if he were real they would get into fist fights with him).
 26. How do you see Severus Snape in your head?
The responses were very varied so first I’ll list the most frequent features, orientations and other headcanons. First majority saw him as Alan Rickman, sometimes tweaked in terms of age, size and orientation, etc. Adrian Brody, Shazad Latif and Adam Driver are other fancasts. Features that recurred include tall, skinny (or in that range), not conventionally attractive, greasy hair, gaunt face, black eyes, and hooked nose. The fandom also saw him as average to short with medium length hair, and dexterous fingers.  As for race, majority saw him as white but a substantial portion of the fandom had nonwhite headcanons specifically Arab, Jewish, Asian, and Rromani.
The sexual orientations were also varied with asexuality in the lead followed by bisexuality, heterosexuality, pansexuality and homosexuality. Romantic orientations mentioned the most are demiromantic, biromantic, homoromantic and panromantic. Gender headcanons weren’t specified often but non binary genders had an edge with a significant number of responders seeing her as a trans woman.  There were also intersex headcanons.
Many answers comprised of behavior and mental health headcanons with most seeing him at least mentally unhealthy. Depression and PTSD were mentioned regularly. A sizeable part of the fandom disagreed with commonly held headcanons. They felt Severus’ ethnic features (large, hooked nose, oily hair and skin tone) were not inherently ugly. They also felt that he was not unhygienic as he wasn’t described with bad body odour. Also I saw more facial hair headcanons than I expected.
 27. What is Severus Snape’s most iconic moment?
The most iconic moment by a margin was ‘Always.’ ‘Turn to page 394’ and the patronus were second and third. A list of other iconic moments include:
The scene in Prisoner of     Azkaban with the trio and werewolf Lupin.
‘Obviously.’
The Half Blood Prince
Killing Dumbledore     (especially the ‘Snape killed Dumbledore’ meme)
His death
‘DON’T CALL ME A COWARD’
The duel with Lockhart
First Potions class
Revealing the Dark Mark to     Fudge
 28. How does hatred towards Severus Snape in the Harry Potter fandom make you feel?
This is admittedly one of the two most important questions in the survey. I’ll explain in a separate post why but let’s get to it. The fandom felt annoyed, sad, angry, upset, disgusted, and frustrated. A lot of the hate seemed to hurt the fandom. Some of the responses were longer and gave more details such as feelings towards victim blaming, actions blown out of proportions, more attractive characters being given leeway in comparison, canon facts being twisted and fanon being treated as canon. A fraction of the fandom was indifferent.
 29. What would you like to see more of the Severus Snape fandom?
Replies include more
fanworks in general
meta
positivity
ship love
support for one another
space for abuse and bully     victims to talk about Severus Snape
unity
fanart that is diverse and     has different themes that the usual lilies and doe

happy Snape
alternate universes
diversity and accommodation in terms of     mental illness and disability,
appreciation of his good     deeds
discourse on his bad deeds
creativity
headcanons
fun posts and silly     headcanons
fandom activities
 30. What would you like to see less of in the Severus Snape fandom?
There were two overwhelmingly agreed answers: Snape hate and focus on Snape hate. In longer responses the fandom felt that we were too preoccupied with the Snape discourse to the point that responding to antis directly and indirectly was what we do most.
Other replies include:
shipping
ignoring his flaws
fighting within and out of     the fandom
some Snape ships which I     won’t mention as it will cause fights
Marauders
Reposting and stealing     fanart
ooc Snape
glorification of Lily (‘he     has a life outside of Lily’ ‘tired of saint Lily’)
Lily hate
racism in fandom spaces
sexism
lgbtqiap+phobia
That’s the Severus Snape fandom survey results. If you have any questions feel free ask.

guide to writing a desi james potter (and even for harry)!
(#justiceforpavbhaji). but we do eat a LOT of biryani (its apparently the most ordered meal in india lol)
and i know you want to make the "im very white for spices" jokes but where are my desserts????? rasmalai? gulab jamun? rabdi? so cloyingly sweet ashdj
and we call tea, chai and it can be sweet and spicy.
it would make me so happy seeing names of my favorite food sprinkled through out your fic even if you don't elaborate on his indian heritage much <;3
i can’t list off every single one of them here but my dms are always open if you need any help with them
6. not all of us
it makes me sad reading about fics where james doesn’t like his indian heritage. not all poc characters need an "accepting my culture" arc.
give me a james who loves how his skin looks, loves going back to india every summer, loves mythological stories and narrates them to harry every night before bed, is so excited when he takes regulus and his friends to india for the first time.
just so much potential. i have way way more headcanons for a desi james if anyone’s interested
7. languages
most of us grow up bilingual or trilingual. the first thing a lot of us learn is english alphabets and grow up with our family speaking hindi, english and the regional languages. and our accents are way more subtle that you think they are.
you know the drill - 22 recognized languages plus a lot of regional languages and thousands to millions of speakers for every single one of them.
8. for the love of everything gay, please do NOT use google translate
don’t trust google or online translators or dictionaries. they translate your sentences right but no one speaks like that irl so it sounds very fake.
interesting thing, we speak a mashed up new language called hinglish (code-switching and code-mixing of english and hindi) and it has way more speakers than just
i speak english, hindi, marathi and some konkani and my besties speak gujrati and punjabi so if you want any help translating, please please ask!!
9. headcanons
this is a personal addition but pleaseeee i want a fic where the black brothers meet james’s extended family. i want a fic where harry celebrates his first holi. i want james humming bollywood songs and calling regulus "jaan."
you don't need your characters to have a big heavy discussion on colonialism or racism. but including these small things matters very very much.
10. racism
it is extremely likely that james might have faced racism in hogwarts and even in muggle aus.
we experience casual racism and stupid stereotypes which is very annoying. don't base your characters off the ones you see in movies and such. they usually get everything wrong.
resources
to get a hang of the geography some stereotypes baby name website pretty accurate video on the whole of india indian food
thank you for reading this and bearing with my keysmashes and rants. if you have any questions, feel free to shoot a dm or an ask <;33

Chapter 21: The First Day
September 2, 1971
Sirius woke in the morning gazing at the heavy red drapes that hung from his four poster, enclosing him. He felt a little claustrophobic with them closed around him, too used to the silver velvet ones that adorned his bed at home. Still, he pushed the feeling away, determined not to let his home life affect his time at Hogwarts. Sirius heard alarm clocks echo through the dormitory, and he stretched his arms above his head, pointing his toes and trying to stretch every inch of his body. After a few pleasant little popping sensations in his joints, Sirius swung his feet over the side of the bed, the wood floor nice and cool on his bare feet. He looked over at the bed next to him and saw that James, who had not bothered to close the curtains around his own bed, had grumpily covered his head with his pillow, groaning unhappily.
"Oi, pudding brain!" Sirius hollered at the snoozing James, picking up his own pillow and tossing it sharply at the sleeping boy's head.
"Wha?" James blinked sleepily, pushing himself up a little to look around, searching for who hit him, only to find Sirius grinning maniacally at him. "Bloody hell mate," he groaned, planting his face back into the pile of pillows on his bed now.
"Come on, you'll miss breakfast," Sirius said, bouncing on his feet as he stripped his pajamas off.
The other boys were getting ready in relative silence, and the air in the dormitory felt rather tired, but definitely excited. They were all groggy, and Sirius could tell that none of the rest of them were morning people. He strode over to his trunk, wearing no clothes at all, and started pulling his uniform out item by item. To his surprise, he found that his robes all had a Gryffindor patch on the left breast, and his grey sweaters were all lined with red and gold trim. On the bars encircling the wood burning stove in the middle of the room hung twelve Gryffindor ties, two for each of them. Sirius fingered them as the other five boys babbled happily, feeling a mixture of excitement and anxiety. Running through his fingers was actual evidence that he was in Gryffindor now, concrete proof that he was different from the rest of his family, and that thrilled him, and yet he knew that it was not so easy, that his family would not take it lying down, and he dreaded their response.
"You ready?" Remus asked, though it was a bit of a silly question, since Sirius was still standing stark naked by the stove, gazing at the silk tie in his hands.
"Er, sorry, just a sec," Sirius answered, snapping out of his daze and returning to the task of getting ready for the day.
He threw his clothes on haphazardly, not really caring how he looked, and he rushed out with James and Remus, Peter trailing along hurriedly, still trying to pull his robe on. The four of them sat down at the Gryffindor table, and James immediately began piling sausage and eggs onto his plate. Sirius poured pumpkin juice for all of them and then helped himself to food, waiting to see how the day would start.
Professor McGonagall stood and walked along the Gryffindor table, distributing sheets of paper to all the students as she did. She stopped in front of the four of them and peered down her nose at them, looking very stern, but James merely continued to eat his breakfast, while Remus gazed up at her slightly apprehensively.
"Names," she stated, her eyebrow raised slightly as she waited for them to answer.
"Remus Lupin," he answered first, and she tapped the parchment in her hand before handing it to him.
"Peter Pettigrew," Peter followed, and he too was handed a slip of parchment.
"Dame Po'er," James replied thickly through a mouthful of scrambled eggs, and Professor McGonagall closed her eyes for a moment as though she were trying to muster the energy to deal with this immature child in front of her, but then she handed him his parchment too.
"And you?" she said, turning to Sirius, who had thus far been reluctant to speak up.
"Sirius Black," he answered, and though she hid her surprise well, Sirius could see its traces on her face.
"Well Mr. Black, I am very pleased to have you in my house," McGonagall concluded, handing him a piece of parchment and then moving off down the table.
Sirius stared down at the parchment in his hand, and saw a timetable scrawled across it, his name neatly in the top corner.
"Schedules, excellent," Remus said, and James gave him an incredulous look.
Before anyone could say more, however, owls swooped down from the large windows in the front of the room, dropping letters on the plates of their recipients before flying off. All four of the boys received letters in front of them, but Sirius' was the only one that was emerald green and covered with spiky silver writing. He stared at it for a moment before sliding his slightly trembling fingers beneath the flap of the envelope.
Sirius Phinneas Black,
The family is immensely disappointed in your Sorting. We had so hoped that you would join the Slytherin legacy, but as usual you have failed to live up to our expectations and your duties. Do not be deluded, however, that being in a different House changes your obligations. You will act in a manner befitting your family and your station, make no mistake, and failure to do so will result in severe punishment. And during your time spent at home, you will not distract your brother from his goals of attending Hogwarts and being Sorted into Slytherin next year. At least one of our sons will not be a disappointment to us.
Mother & Father
Sirius returned the letter to its envelope, trying desperately to suppress the rage and hurt that was coursing through him.
"Ah, excellent!" James gushed as he poured over his letter. "My mother says she and dad are so pleased, they're going to send a package along with scarves and other Gryffindor things along in a few days."
"My parents are quite excited too," Remus joined in, a wide smile gracing his face. "Mum doesn't really know what it means of course, but Dad is pleased."
"I think my mum is rather proud," Peter piped up. "Gryffindor always seems so heroic."
"Sirius?" Remus asked, looking over at him.
Sirius had turned quite pale, and a bit green. He felt as though he were going to be sick, suddenly the bangers and mash seemed like a bad idea.
"Sirius?" James echoed, and Sirius' head snapped up to look at them.
"Er, my parents aren't exactly thrilled, but who cares what they think," he answered, trying very hard to force his mouth into a smile.
"Mate…" James began, but Sirius shook his head.
"It's fine," he said. "I'm fine." He balled the letter and the hideous green envelope it came it and made a tight fist around them, crushing them tighter and tighter.
"Well, let's see what classes we have today then," Remus interjected, sensing the need to change the topic.
"Transfiguration first, that's good," James added, glancing at his schedule. "Double History of Magic though, surely that won't be fun."
"Herbology before lunch ought to be good though," Peter joined in.
Sirius smiled at them all, feeling his spirits lift as he watched them. He didn't need his family's approval, not when he had such great friends.
"Come on, I want to get a good seat," Remus implored, getting up and grabbing his bag. James and Sirius rolled their eyes at him, but Peter bounced up, seemingly just as eager as Remus, or perhaps just eager not to get left behind.
They made their way to the classroom listed, after taking a few unintended detours down the wrong corridors. By the time they made it, many of the seats were taken already, and the only group of four together was in the second row, so they took it. The students all chattered quietly until Professor McGonagall swept in, looking very austere.
"Ladies and gentlemen, your attention up front, please," she began in a commanding voice, and the whole room fell silent. "This is Transfiguration class, where you will learn the basic principles of the art. If you think that it will be easy or simple, you are sorely mistaken. My class requires focus, attention, diligence, and seriousness."
"At your service!" Sirius stood, saluting her, determined not to let a single pun involving his name go to waste. Professor McGonagall closed her eyes again, breathing deeply for a moment, as though she was only then beginning to understand the hassle she was going to face for the next seven years.
"Mr. Black, I will not tolerate this kind of idiocy in my class," she said sternly, towering over him and looking very fierce.
"Is there another kind of idiocy you would prefer?" he replied cheekily, and several people in the class tittered.
"Mr. Black, you will see me after class. And sit down." Sirius, who had still been standing at attention, dropped back into his seat. "You are all expected to behave appropriately in class, and to offer myself and each other due respect. You will complete your assignments on time and to the best of your ability. Have I made myself clear?"
Choruses of "Yes, Professor" echoed through the classroom as students took note that Professor McGonagall was not a woman to be messed with.
Sirius' punishment turned out to be 500 words on appropriate classroom behavior, which was not much in the grand scheme of things, and he dashed it off during the lunch break, no problem. The rest of the day's classes were uneventful – the History of Magic teacher had been frightfully boring, and Sirius hadn't been able to pay attention for more than two minutes before he began doodling on his notes. Herbology had been fun though, Sirius had enjoyed digging around in the dirt with James, Remus, and Peter, and had even managed to get in a little bit of a dirt fight with James without getting into too much trouble. All in all, by the end of the first day, things were beginning to look up, and Sirius wasn't quite as distressed by the letter he had received from his parents.
