The Guardian’s Nightmare

The theme for Bungie Day this year is about our stories as Guardians, so why not share a bit more of my main character's lore, especially while we're in the middle of Season of the Haunted? 🌠 I wrote a bit about it on a twitter thread and I’ll share it here as well:

During this season I wondered what was her Nightmare considering all my headcanons so far, and after confirming that living characters can be someone's Nightmare (Caiatl for Calus ay), Alfa's one definitely would be her moody and cautious Ghost, Zeta. I made a previous comic about Alfa's struggle with (a projection of my own) social anxiety and her desire to not be dependent on others. While Stasis gives her some power independent of Light, she only controls thanks to Zeta's support.

And ofc Elsie's support as well, bc I simp for her and so does my hunter asdfghj drawing her was quite comforting for me during last year. This comic still is one of my personal favorites

Now, the Nightmare of Zeta materializes(-ish?) Alfa's dependance on him to have some power and be a Guardian, and how without him she would be a forgotten corpse. The Nightmare's voice mixes up with Zeta's, pretending to be the real one while reminding Alfa of her failures, foreseeing her potential corruption to Stasis and propheticizing Zeta's death thanks to her carelessness. Taking the shape of a Ghost, the Nightmare can keep itself invisible and speak only to Alfa, and reveals its presence and shape to others only after becoming a Memory.

I'll admit I still didn't think how the Sever would work because this still is a fresh headcanon, but what I can immediately think of is that Alfa would hold secret of her Nightmare until Zeta realizes something is wrong and her Stasis control gets shaky.

Anyway, these are just some of my own headcanons during this season, I don't know if any of it does fit to the actual canon, but I thought it's fitting to share it here because of the themes and how it communicates to me as well ✨

listening to lust for life in full probably for the first time since the album came out. what a terrible choice for an artist who is known for her old-school nostalgic sound and references to make an album that includes so many 2017-sounding trap rap features.

I've been wanting to do this post for a while now so here is EVERYTHING I CAN TELL YOU ABOUT THE GHOULS' IMPERA COSTUMES.

Buckle up because I have a LOT to say about those, this is gonna be a very long one.

The costumes were designed by B Åkerlund, a Swedish costume designer who's worked with Ghost since at least Meliora (that's as far back as I was willing to scroll on her Instagram page lol). B Åkerlund has also worked for many other musical artists such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Madonna, the Rolling Stones, Ozzy Osborne, Blink 182 and Hollywood Undead (information from her own website)

The masks were made by Bob Basset, a visual artists who works a lot with leather. I find his work fascinating, you can look him up on Instagram (nsfw warning, there's a few naked ladies).

Fun fact! The horns are real cow horns. That's the reason some of them have gold tips, to hide the imperfections that come with working with actual horns.

He does have a shop where he sells his items, there's a mask there very similar to the Impera ones. You can also buy Papa's batwings if you happen to have 2500$ lying around!

The jackets are made on the same model as one of Papa's. The back is decorated with a spine-like design made from leather and cording. It's adorned with a few of our classic Impera buttons. Some of the hems were left raw and some deliberate weathering was done to make it look old and worn.

Fun fact! The shoulder pieces are not sewn into the garment, I would assume for easier cleaning. I don't know if they're held by strong magnets or snap buttons.

The vest (my beloved 😩) is made from flocked velvet in a paisley pattern, the front hems embellished with satin piping. It closes in the front with custom metal clasps that are riveted into the garment. The D parts are attached with what seems to me like wide elastic, which would lessen the pression on the clasps when moving around a lot. The back is made from two different types of fabric, I'd have to touch it to be able to tell you what they are. I assume the panels closer to the sides have some mild stretch to them. The top of the shoulders are decorated with Impera grucifix patches.

The shirts were not custom made for the ghouls, altho they were altered. The original shirt in the vintage painter linen shirt from Punk Rave and it is still being sold. Some of the cuffs were altered, removing the ruffles for some of the ghouls, but not all. They were removed for Dew, Mountain and Phantom, Aether's didn't have them either. As far as I can tell, all the ghoulettes still have them.

An unfinished piece of linen serves as an ascot, that piece is decorated with a metal devil skull. The colour of the skull doesn't appear to be consistent between each ghoul, Dew's looks gold almost bronze while Phantom's is a silver-like colour.

Another modification is the buttons, a small portion of them were removed in favor of our Impera buttons. Some of the ghouls have more buttons replaced than others, which is still a mystery to me.

The pants are called Jodhpurs, they were invented in the 1800s as horse riding pants. The wide part at the hips and thighs allowing for better movement. The ones the ghouls wear don't reach all the way to their ankles, they stop a bit past the calf muscle, hidden by the boots. (Yes, the ghouls are effectively wearing capri pants)

The boots are motorcycle riding boots, decorated by a grucifix. Like the shirt, they can still be bought online through the All American Boots website, altho the price tag is... Headache inducing to say the least.

The cape is a piece of costume that was only briefly worn on stage by the ghouls, Aurora being the only one who still wears one. I would assume it gets in the way of playing very easily. The cape itself is made of two fabrics, a light blue satin and a dark grey suede. The two pieces are not sewn together at the bottom, they move freely from each other. The cape is attached on the left shoulder with a harness piece that has one strap across the chest, decorated with a metal buckle, and one under the armpit.

that aside, i feel like gender-wise hes attracted to ppl so infrequently it may as well be entirely case-by-case

the idea of him being gay appeals to me from the 'raised with traditional values he Does Not fit into/hasnt begun to question it yet' perspective, i lauve characters who put a lot of stock into performing a role thats expected of them and fail miserably for unknown (gay) reasons

from his perspective tho i dont think he would ever really label himself anything. hes going to pride parades in the shirt+shorts Ally Fit to clap for his friends

hes also 'cis by indifference' imo... i love tmasc laios hcs it just doesnt mesh w his personal history to me. i do think hes got some kind of therian gender thing going on (not trans or nb but a secret third thing) but i cant see him changing anything abt his appearance/pronouns to accommodate that post-canon. hes just doin his thang

i think izutsumis gender/sexuality is entirely secondary in priorities to her body dysphoria. she has a lot of learning and acceptance 2 do before that kind of self discovery is on the docket and in my mind eschewing gender on some level is part of that. get sillay

AU where Kunikida Chuuya and Sigma form a “was at some point Dazai’s partner” support group where they drink and bitch about Dazai (Sigma wasn’t his partner but gets honorary membership for everything that happened in Meursault)

more rambling/ headcannons under the cut!

Their drinking habits :

Kunikida— responsible, only has a couple drinks (beer? Whiskey? Something straightforward like that). Usually the good one that doesn’t overdo it unless Dazai has really pissed him off that day. It only happens occasionally but when it does he goes wild and is an emotional drunk. When this happens even Chuuya holds back on drinking a bit bc someone has to be able to lug this guy back at the end of the night

Chuuya- I mean we know his canonical drinking habits. Orders a bottle of fancy wine, his alcohol tolerance is on the lower side but he keeps going anyways. The only way for him to handle thinking about Dazai for this long is to drink heavily but he wants to take the opportunity to bitch about him so this is the solution

Sigma— despite being the owner of a casino I don’t think he’s drank a lot (he’s the manager so he has to be aware of what’s happening). He does have an id that Nikolai forged for him tho so when he joins the group he starts the process of trying a bunch of different drinks. The first night no one warned him about mixing alcohols and he got a different drink every round and got super sick. Now he just tries a different drink each meetup and how many drinks he gets depends on how much he liked/didn’t like what he ordered. Usually is responsible and handles drinking well unless he orders something he really likes (probably a cocktail) and forgets it’s alcohol. He’s a tamer drunk than the other two tho I think. Either a silly drunk or a sleepy drunk. Bc he’s known Dazai the least amount of time he sometimes naturally falls into that supportive friend role of listening to the other two and getting offended on their behalf. Altho I’m sure Dazai still finds ways to make time to bug Sigma so it’s not like he doesn’t have any stories

Speaking of Dazai there’s no way he hasn’t crashed these meet ups before. All his people he likes to annoy are conveniently in one place! ^ ω ^ they have to keep switching up bars/ locations to try and keep him away (to minimal success so far)

Regarding Sigma: I think in this au he made it out of Meursault bc Dazai and Chuuya got him out and he’s woken up. He’s worked with the ada to tell them what he learned, etc but hasn’t fully joined bc he thinks maybe it would be better to just fully live a normal life. Dazai still bugs him and stuff, and when Chuuya one day is also there when this happens he invites him to join him and Kunikida in their routine bitchfest. Sigma goes despite not really trusting either of them (afraid of getting used, clearly knew of chuuya before and saw him as a threat). He gets more comfortable over time tho and they become something like friends (?).

I think it would be funny if Sigma did eventually become an ada member but by Kunikida’s recommendation rather than Dazai’s. Honestly I think Sigma not joining from the beginning would be because Fyodor was the one to say that he wanted to join the ada so he’s now resistant about it, though also it’s because he’s afraid of being used again. He’s just a little conflicted at first.

Sorry, followers, for posting a lot on the isotretinoin post. (I'm gonna go back and tag all those with the tag "isotretinoin".) I'm just... very passionate about my job as a pharmacy technician. Accurate medication information is so so so important!! Accurate information is your best weapon in the fight to advocate for yourself!!!

I personally am on the side of the patient. My coworkers even tease me sometimes for always trying to assume good faith on the part of the patient (even when they sometimes make it really hard to). I take my job very seriously and think it's important.

Most of what I do is talking to patients, typing, counting, billing insurance, etc. I want to point out that I am not a medical expert. That's the pharmacist. They're the ones who went to school for medical training. Being a pharmacy technician is an entry-level position you can learn on the job. A lot of my knowledge is passively absorbed thru working in a pharmacy for 6 years. I still won't dispense medical advice because I am not trained to.

But if anyone has questions for navigating the world of the pharmacy as a patient? Or you have questions about why things are set up certain ways? That's the stuff I can more confidently answer.

If any of yall have questions about your medications, talk to your pharmacist!! If that pharmacist kinda sucked, talk to a different one. (Most pharmacists do care, but they're overworked and exhausted. Altho I've certainly met a few assholes.) Consulting patients on their medications is considering the most important part of their job to the point that it's enshrined in law! And consulting a pharmacist, at least in America, is free. (Can't speak for other countries. I imagine it's similar most places?)

Everyone, please respect the power medications have over your body. They are not things to be afraid of, but they are not to be taken lightly either. There is no shame in taking medications, but there is also risk to be balanced. And accurate knowledge is one of the best ways to do so.

Oh my god I spent so long writing a FUCKING RESPONSE and tumblr deleted it kill me. ANYWAY “is this anything” friend this is everything. 🤝

I think the two of them are uniquely able to understand each other bcuz in summary, the things they are both most vulnerable and affected by, the things that have probably damaged their lives most, are things they cannot conceal from others. Laios’ autism and Chilchuck’s size. There’s VERY good discussions on whether Chil is totally normal, autistic but very good at masking, somewhere inbetween, or even whether he’s cis, and those would all INFORM this conversation but whichever way you read him, he is socially aware enough to see that Laios is NOT. And it drives him crazy and he is constantly frustrated and trying to teach him to be more aware of himself as the party leader and just “be more normal”. In my opinion this is because Chil KNOWS how much it hurts to live with a part of yourself you can’t control that makes it hard to make your way through the world — in his own way, he is trying to take care of Laios. This may be both for selfish (he wants a good stable party and that requires a good socially savvy party leader) and selfless (chilaios…) reasons, but either way. It’s essentially just there in the text To Me.

Chilchuck is probably extra frustrated because, at least as he seems to see it, Laios COULD choose to shave off those rough edges of himself and “pass” as respectable/“normal”. (Another reason I kinda think Chil has his own autism thing happening. In my experience, shamefully, I’ve been least patient with people who I see as like me but they just haven’t figured out how to stop the world from hurting them like I have.) (I imagine chil often thinks things like. why don’t you just change. Don’t you see how much easier it would be for you. Don’t you see how much you’re letting the world hurt you. Don’t you know what that will do to you, over time.) meanwhile Chilchuck cannot stop the rest of the world from seeing him as either childLIKE or just straight up a tall-man kid. No matter how professional he is or how scathingly he can insult people or how much he can drink — he can’t stop what people SEE when they LOOK at him (this also makes him a great trans character To Me). I think Laios knows exactly how this feels. He’s not seen as a kid, so it’s not exactly the same. But despite having everything Chilchuck would like to have (tall, looks manly, socially respectable in appearances)… Laios is never going to pass as normal once people get to know him. He ISN’T socially aware. He CAN’T pretend to be someone else anymore, not once the story starts.

So autistic Laios keeps bumbling through social situations that make people want to fucking hunt him for sport. He can’t say the right things, and when he has tried to be himself, we can assume it’s been very poorly received in the past, both when dungeoneering and prior as a little kid. When he’s not being manic about his monster special interest he seems to constantly be doing an Autism Stare that serves to keep people away from him and his sister.

The fact that Chil and Laios both, to some degree, can’t hide what they hate most about themselves, makes them uniquely able to understand each other. And treat each other with sympathy/empathy underneath it all. Laios is the one out of their party who most treats Chilchuck as an adult with agency (understands the stress of his work, defends him, lets him steer situations, listens to his advice, never demeans him or gives any indication he thinks he’s a child altho he did assume Chil is younger than him). If the daydream hour extras that give rough indications of who joined the party when are canon, Chilchuck is the party member who’s been with the party the longest, almost since Falin and Laios founded it, despite thinking of Laios as “the party leader comma I GUESS”. He keeps trying to beat lessons about leading parties into Laios’ head despite many ppl around him considering him a lost cause. As I’ve said in other posts…. He could probably just fucking walk out at any time and either retire or get a different party, and we know Chil has no problem hitting da bricks, but he doesn’t.

The things about themselves that make them most able to relate to each other are also the things that sometimes make them grate against each other (Chil berating Laios in the way only a guy with a major complex can and Laios pouting about it lmao. Laios continuing to be a big cute socially inept dummy anyways.) BUT THAT’S LOVE, BABEY!!!

Gonna say something because this is a personal blog: Genuinely hate how as an artist on social media, you can only grow an audience if you either: draw the exact same thing in the exact same style over and over again OR dedicate yourself to drawing fanart of the current most popular shows / games.

If you wanna be like....... a normal artist, then you're out. You have no chance. This reality hits me every time and it makes me... sad? Especially because to me, the most rewarding part of making art is getting to show others what I made. But hardly anyone's gonna look, unless you focus on that one thing and recycle it into eternity.

I always challenge myself to draw unique artwork without any "repeats" (altho, I've also learned to sometimes go easy and let myself draw a comfort zone artwork). But it's clearly not a way to make an impression or grab people's attention. If you draw x and someone's interested in that, they won't follow you unless your profile contains a whole array of xa and xb and xc and xd and xe and xf etc.

And it's just so weird, because while you might find monetary success with one approach, each approach comes with unhappiness. Either you draw what you want, and are unhappy about nobody being there to look at your stuff OR your force yourself to drive down a single narrow road (is any artist happy doing that?) while gaining a following and perhaps financial success. And I guess many people work jobs they hate, but the reason why I wanna do illustration is because I don't want to hate my job.

So, the only way out of this dilemma is to get those sweet commercial jobs, but jobs for graduates chronically do not exist. And then you think like, if I'm working minimum wage (or far below) anyway, why don't I just pick up a minimum wage job. I know I would love some assembly line work, but then I won't have time to draw anymore!!!!

Finn is obviously using his (a little unbalanced) coping mechanisms when it comes to trauma - I mean, he said it outright: "I love fixing people" -which is really symptomatic of his own trauma and coping mechanisms developed over time: "just keep him busy and everything will be alright"

I'm fairly sure Finn is also coping hard with his grief of losing Jake, a lot of what he's doing is mostly to keep his mind off that loss it seems (altho seriously is he and Huntress Wizard like - what is going on there? hmmm?)

And Finn cares greatly for Simon but his coping mechanisms (coping by helping someone else cope and keeping busy through adventure) are simply NOT the way Simon wants to cope

Finn is inadvertently shoving in his face how out of place Simon is in this world

Simon is out of place in the human town as well but he might be arguably safer than in the wilds of Ooo where Finn was born and raised

I also believe that Simon is looking to the past as if he also belonged there. That wasn't true either. He was doing expeditions in Java, searching for mythical objects that people called him silly for, and believed in and studied magic when magic was a joke. Simon was a man of magic in a time of normality and now due to the whole trauma associated with magic, he is stuck as a normal guy in a time of magic.

Morever even if he wanted to, he can't even pick up where he left his research as an antiquarian, because his research has come into full fruition in front of him. He no longer has to prove that magic exists. He's like those paleontologists at the start of Jurassic Park - his studies have come to life which rendered his work null and void.

Simon likely never felt like he belonged anywhere until he met Betty - who believed in his work, who dropped her work to chase after his crazy theories. Betty was the one person who believed in him before. And sure, he has family still. He has people that love him and wish nothing more to support him.

But none of them get him.

But maybe Fionna will.

I didn't really notice this before but it's interesting how in the dispute over whether Jesus is casting out demons because he himself is on the devils payroll in Matthew 12 - there's the famous bit about blasphemy against the Holy Spirit which lots of people get hung up on (and understandably so, esp if you struggle w scrupulousity and OCD - very inflammatory thing to put in the Bible @ God).

but Jesus then goes on to talk about good and bad fruits, and this line struck me: "Either make the tree out to be good and its fruit good, or make the tree out to be rotten and its fruit rotten; for the tree is known by its fruit."

you can kinda sense his frustration here. "make up your minds! either I'm doing something wrong or I'm not; can we not try to claim that I have some evil hidden ulterior motive that makes all the good things I'm doing secretly bad."

now sure, there are circumstances where people can do or support good things for bad reasons (nazis using anti Zionist sentiment as a dogwhistle; terfs making a song and dance about feminism - altho id argue neither of these groups are particularly 'doing' good things just hijacking them, but there are also just homophobic conservative churches that do run soup kitchens and food banks and yet that doesn't counterbalance the bad they do) or do bad things for what they perceive to be good reasons. but seems like what Jesus is talking about is again his old maxim of judge trees by their fruit; don't decide a priori that since X person is wrong therefore everything they do is tainted with wickedness.

blasphemy of the Holy Spirit happens when people see God at work doing good things and decide, in order to preserve their preconceived ideas about the way things are and what's good and bad, to call good evil.

and I think the reason that's an 'unforgivable' sin isn't necessarily because it's a particularly heinous one, but because it fundamentally warps your ability to interpret the actions of God. If you see God's goodness and mercy and grace at work in the world and decide well actually that's the Devil - how are you supposed to ever break out of that and truly recognise God? it's like when someone is hyped up on flat earth, creationism, anti vaxxer, protocols of the elders of Zion conspiracy theories; they've kinda destroyed their ability to even consider any alternative simply by loudly insisting any counterpoint is propaganda, any evidence to the contrary is fabricated, science itself is a hoax. blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is the same; people have destroyed any external benchmark (such as the harm and suffering being created) for judging their interpretations of scripture and faith.

and I can't help but think a bit on queer christians (as usual; I need to start finding other topics to get on my soapbox about), bc when we offer the fact that gay relationships or gender transition cultivate love and joy and peace and kindness and goodness, we get very much the same answer as Jesus' critics gave. "Pff. It's the work of the Devil." People a priori reject the good and life giving things we find in queerness because they don't want to deal with the implications of that. and so we get people insisting that bad trees can bear good fruit.

now in fairness they often do try for consistency and insist that actually this good fruit is a hollow lie and truly LGBTQ people are suffering underneath from living against God's will. but I think this view is losing its power bit by bit bc people understand it's asserting ideology over reality. it's a hard sell and not an intellectually serious position. either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad

To confess, I’m not great at drawing eren.

Despite the amount of times I had drawn him, I still don’t fully get him. It could be that I’m too dumb or too much of a casual fan for deep analysis, but AOT has failed to conclude his character for me.

To me Eren is a deeply traumatized individual who failed to mature. He’s a self-righteous man child. But there’s also some ancient evil yadayada messing with his head that isayama couldn’t clear up it up for me, so at this point I still don’t know why eren committed rumbling.

Interestingly, this shows in my art HAHA.

Most of my eremin art is seen from armin’s POV, eren remains either a mystery or partially seen. Eren from Armin’s POV works better in my drawings bc he’s an incomplete character, a huge mystery even, he makes no sense to me sometimes, but above all he’s a symbol of doom and rage.

(“POV” is rather vague in illustrations esp when a lot of them can be objective. To me POV applies when the drawing leans toward one character’s bias, feelings, and how they see things.)

I see Yall's stuff about Blades being like G1 Blades and him being the oldest and I raise you. He's not violent like G1 but he is a good and confident flier. Except in his Earth Alt Mode. He didn't say anything about it when he first got it because he thought he would get used to the form, but it didn't happen. By the time he realized he would Forever Have Problems, Blades felt like it was to late to bring it up to anyone.

Eventually his frustration with his altmode gets to the point where something else minor manages to set him off and he's yelling at the TV remote for not working or something like that and his team mates insist on him telling them the real reason he's so upset. Blades finally snaps and says, "fine! You want the truth?! It's my Alt Mode- and before you say it, it's not because it can fly! The problem is that my alt mode is the worst designed, most front heavy, lopsided, piece of SCRAP design for a helicopter I've ever even SEEN! It's horrible! Every time I take off it takes most of my concentration to not swerve to either side because of the fact the rotors are to short for rapid turning or getting anywhere fast!" Blades grabs a pillow and screams into it as Boulder gently pats his back.

Without even really thinking, Chase says that it can't be that Bad and Blades replies with Venom in his voice, "how would you feel in your Altmode's tires were so large that you only have half an inch between your insides and the treads so everytime you hit any bump it scrapes- or how would Boulder feel if his scoop was almost as heavy as nearly his whole cab so he just tips forward when he tries to lift things?! Or what if Heatwave's ladder was so long it hung 3 feet off the front and back of your truck with no way to make it smaller?! My Alt Mode is a poorly balanced, front heavy, bubble shapped waste of scrap metal!"

Yeah I can see that being an issue.

The humans didn't design those to be comfortable for an alive thing. It's very odd even for a cartoon helicopter.

I suppose he does complain about it to the point Dani takes him under repairs and tried to adjust things up while also being very cautious about Blades' live parts and fuel lines. He instructs her and gives her whatever files she would need to get this piece of shit altmode to working condition.

In the end he got some better conditions to function in. There's still a little bit of issues but it's not nearly as annnoying as it was before- the front heavy build got balaced with the weight added to his tail/pedes and the rotor blades got longer. His whole shape got redone to be more of a tear-shaped, altho it's not that noticable. I suppose the whole thing took few days to finish so he wasn't operatable in that time, but hey if it meant no hissy fits or constant complaints about pains n such then it was worth it.

Dani hasn't been more stressed about messing things up, but she did it. And she has a right to brag about it to her sibblings.

Bad: “I am slowly torturing myself, to motivate myself to get my son back.” that whole entire admission was bonkers but what the hell was THIS about? Torturing himself as motivation? Also- recognizing the soul vulture fuckery as torture. fucking break my heart eight times over with that barrel full of soul hearts from dapper. he looked in that barrel and he was PROUD and now he’s talking about torturing himself. so. either he recognizes that dapper was torturing himself too (and recognized from the beginning+was proud or has realized through the course of his grieving how fucked up that was). it may be the second one? if he’s using guilt exasperated by the torture as a motivator to find dapper again.

but at the same time- he’s so aware that its torture. bad has so much trouble addressing things head on, sometimes purposefully (liberating furniture) and sometimes thru denial (hello birthday party), but he acknowledges it as torture so easily that i think its one of those things he’s known for a while, and not recently come to realize. he’s ALSO using it to punish himself for what he has to do to his friends and family- and he said this part separately, so its hard to reasonably assume his “motivation to find dapper via torture” is tied into some sort of penance.

(altho i DO think he’s ALSO using the vultures to torture himself out of guilt for losing the eggs. he brought that vulture out with him on a walk when he talked to the missing eggs from the church roof, and let it eat away at him the way he lets his guilt over the eggs eat away at him. I just also think the motivation thing is separate, due to his phrasing)

Is he using the pain to ground himself? using it to avoid a depressive spiral? Bbh is self sacrificial as HELL and doesnt blink when popping 20 totems in a dungeon for the sake of friends/eggs- i think he has a different relationship with pain than is. uh. Healthy. We could see that when he was unphased by the vulture’s attacks on the church roof. It’s not like he’s whipping himself to drive the carriage forwards. he doesnt care enough to avoid pain to use pain avoidance as a motivator. so what else about the torture is driving him forwards?

maybe he doesnt know that it doesnt work on him? or- he’s using “motivation” as an excuse to hurt himself even more. he already showed some dissonance during that convo with tina. Punishing himself for hurting his friends, AND placing mines down to punish them (unrelated to finding the eggs and potentially making his mission more difficult. placing mines is an emotional reaction that he feels justified in. (“It’s just an annoyance”) he’s hurting his friends while hurting HIMSELF for hurting his friends, but the mines are not the reason for his own punishment). It could be that he’s using the “motivation” as justification for stronger-than-he’d-normally-reason harm to himself, just like he’s justified “revenge” against the other players with the mines
