Once again back on my yearly bullshit to stress how important Bumbleby really is for sapphics in media
Bumbleby is a slow burn, opposites attract, golden retriever/black cat romance. Individually Blake and Yang are both well written female characters, and not to mention their two of the four titular characters.
It wasn’t rushed, they aren’t badly written and they’re not random side characters.
It’s to easy to forget that Lexa died in Clarke’s arms, that Korra and Asami had to walk into the light, and that so many other shows have been cancelled or one of them died.
Bumbleby is a win

🙈 Accidental walk in

nsfw under the cut
Amaya and Janai were at the point in their relationship where they both just kinda came and went as they pleased. There were sleepovers, when sadness, stress, or loneliness creeped in leaving one (or both) of them in serious need of cuddles. That was Amaya tonight. It was unexplainable really, she wasn't stressed, she wasn't sad, she'd spent most of the day with Janai between work, workouts, and cross-training military exercises so she wasn't lonely either. She just wanted to be in Janai's strong arms, so she quietly went across the camp intending to sneak into her girlfriend's bed and curl up.
She was met with a good news/bad news situation. Bad news was, she would not be getting to sleep in Janai's warm embrace tonight. Good news was, Amaya caught the end of an AMAZING show. There was Janai, looking beautiful as always; her eyes closed, biting her lips with a hint of a smile...naked and three fingers in knuckle deep. She caught the woman as she hit her climax.
Sadly, Amaya wasn't a heroine in the smut-peddler's novellas, where voyeurs would be rewarded with sex as long as there was an attraction between the leads. She had a standing invitation to sleep in Janai's arms, not watch her pleasure herself. Now Amaya certainly wouldn’t mind if Janai walked in without warning to finish what she’d started alone, but it would be wrong to assume Janai’s boundaries matched her own. So with a brief image of Janai's orgasm burned into her memory, Amaya backed away slowly and left the elf alone. And she thought she was having problems sleeping before...
.....
Janai had been far too engrossed in her fantasy to notice the accidental intrusion of her privacy. The image of a shirtless human general had been plaguing her all afternoon and into the night, so when the thought 'yes, I would like to sleep in Amaya's tent tonight' went through her head... she thought better of it. She'd been...antzy for awhile now, and it wouldn't help to put her arms around the woman.
But... maybe she could make that easier, if she were to give herself some relief before heading over. It didn't take much internal deliberation to follow through with the plan. Janai envisioned a scenario were they were alone together after their workout and fucked herself while picturing Amaya against the wall. It did the trick, the orgasm barely even felt hollow without the human to hold afterwards. Of course, she did this so she could hold the human; Amaya just wouldn't know it was a post climax cuddle. She washed up, dressed and looked fairly normal by the time she reached the general’s tent.
Amaya had told her more than once to act like she owned the place, and it was getting rather late, so Janai’s plan was to just slip into the tent and Amaya’s bed without much fuss. The plan went sideways the moment she laid her eyes on her human. The woman was in bed, unclothed. She sat on her knees, back upright, riding her own fingers and covering her mouth to muffle her moans. Oh…fuck.
She was stunned for a moment, then her mind caught up to her eyes and told her to LOOK AWAY! Suddenly feeling like an unwelcome guest, Janai spun around to make a quick exit, not realizing that the flutter of her cape would attract Amaya’s attention.
CLAP
Damn, she’d been seen. Janai froze in her retreat and slowly turned. At first she tried to look at the floor as she heard rustling on the bed. A snap forced her to look up. Janai had assumed the noise she heard was Amaya moving to cover herself, her jaw dropped when she saw the woman still naked, now facing her; sitting on the edge of her bed and refusing to break eye contact.
“Care to lend a hand? Or tongue?” Amaya signed with a devilish grin.
“...” What could Janai possibly say to that…by the light, was Amaya flexing?!
“No pressure!” Amaya was quick to add, not willing to risk the chance that Janai’s stunned silence was actually uncertainty, “If you want, you can go back home, and I’ll see you tomorrow bright and early for our morning workout. But if you want me like I want you, I would love some help over here.”
“Yes!” she cleared her throat, “Yes, I’d be happy to help you out. If you really want me like I want you.”
“Fuck yes! Amaya got up, closed the distance between them, signed “You’re a little over dressed for the job, though.” and began to peel off Janai’s clothes. In return, Janai captured her lips for a kiss, swept her off her feet and carried her back to bed.

initial spoiler theories:
note: i don’t have ideas for every spoiler, but here’s a few theories that would group some together, or some for a partial idea.
theory #1: ezran’s birthday
I think early season four may include an episode that touches upon Ezran’s birthday. This would be an easy way to catch us up timeskip wise and includes the Opeli, Barius, and 2 cakes card.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It would be a sweet way to show how Ezran’s support system has changed and grown, possibly solidifying season three. Beyond a big influx of jelly tarts, I can’t think of what else could be mysterious other than some sort of birthday treat. Ezran is the most obvious to me, but I could see it being Callum - maybe because Rayla was supposed to be there if it’s a sort of flashback? But I am currently leaning towards Ezran because the idea of his council secretly throwing him a birthday party is too sweet to pass up.
Could also have:
Tumblr media
be Soren and Ava together, if Ellis (and Ava) are invited to Ezran’s party.
theory #2: Xadian & Pentarchy politics
Tumblr media
The Gathering of the Six Horns is likely a gathering of elves or dragons from each of the Six Primal Sources / main Xadian groupings. Could refer to the decision to exile humans, lock Aaravos away, or even a post-s3 gathering to discuss the logistics of peace with humans and the Pentarchy.
Tumblr media
Janai and Karim, who’s almost certainly her brother, to have juxtaposed ideals concerning who and how Lux Aurea is ruled. Janai likely being for peace, and Karim being against humans due to the death of their sister, Khessa. Possibly each of them rallying their armies or respective factions?
Tumblr media
I’m placing this tentatively as a s6 or s7 spoiler, rather than a s4 one like the previous theories, since I think it’ll be a little longer past arc 2 (s4-s5) before Zym starts speaking. That being said, Zym and Zubeia having a heart to heart sounds super sweet, possibly about Zym taking his mother’s place on the throne, and the giant hat (?) being about the logistics of Zym having some kind of crown to wear? (Taking a human tradition, I see?)
Bonus: No idea how or where this fits in, but presumably with the Janai&Karim arc. And if Corvus is there, Amaya (and Ezran) are likely there too!
Tumblr media
theory #3: flashbacks and worldbuilding
Tumblr media
The crystal / gem lecture to me, makes sense to go to Callum, whether as him just learning about Earth magic while roaming Xadia in s4 or him starting to learn the Earth arcanum itself in a later season. It could also possibly refer to a Moon crystal (trying to track Rayla, maybe?) since we know that moon opals and the like can have special properties.
Tumblr media
For the Guardians of the Great Gates, I assume this is the Star Nexus and possibly some other Startouch elves at long last. I could also see the Gates being metaphorical, and the Great Ones (which we already know Aaravos is a part of, thanks to Ziard in 3x01 and the Book One: Moon novelization) - who are the First Elves - knowing how elves first connected to Primal sources. One thing that makes me lean this way is that Pyrda, a Skywing elf from Tales of Xadia, studies more than her own primal, so we know it’s not taboo, and she hopes to retire some day as a Guardian of (magical) Knowledge.
theory #4: where are claudia and rayla?
Tumblr media
I think this card could be in regards to Claudia in s4 in terms of digging up Moonshadow elf graves for spell parts while in Xadia. Meanwhile, for Rayla, I would love to see the card featuring “Nyx: I’m back” to refer to her. Nyx could only have that sort of vibe with Callum or Rayla adjacently because she’s met them, and I think Rayla running into Nyx while on her own could be surprisingly funny, emotional, and sweet.
theory #5: coin theory
That the Ezran card is from season five and relates to the coin theory plotline. I think this card may be a reference to a ritual relating to getting Runaan, Lain, and Tiadrin out of the coins. The reason I say this is because the “Take my hand” card from Ezran - and others, which implies a group - is similar to two key instances of ritual and forgiveness with Moonshadow elves.
Tumblr media
The first is with Ethari saying to Rayla “Take my hand” in 3x03 for forgiveness and reconciliation with Rayla, which would match a similar scene with Ezran working to bring back someone who would’ve killed him / did kill his father, as far as he knows. It would also parallel the rebirth ritual that Lujanne conducted for Phoe-Phoe at the Moon Nexus in “Through the Moon.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus: soren and zubeia
I was super confused when first seeing a scene with Zubeia and Soren were on one of the cards, given that I’d never expected them to seriously interact. However on a bit of further reflection, I realized that the two have quite a lot in common. Soren couldn’t protect his king, Harrow, and failed Ezran at first by agreeing to his father’s plans; Zubeia was absent from the Spire the day her king, her mate, was felled and her child was killed / stolen. Now with Ezran as the new king and Zym having returned to her, both of these two have a second chance to protect their royal families and loved ones - especially given that Ez and Zym’s efforts towards peace are unlikely to be popular with everyone, and some people would love to take them out. So that’s my two cents for this card / scene theory, for now.
Conclusion
I have some brief other theories, like the scary ice hand relating to Rayla and her binding, and Soren’s “super rich” sketchy crimes being him joking around with Ezran about the things they can do now that Ez is king, but these are the big ones I wanted to get out now.

Flowers
My lone submission for the Rayllum Valentine’s event.  Warning: this fic contains mentions of post-partum depression.  Canon-verse, but does involve Rayla still being ghosted
-------------------
Rayla growled in frustration as she threw the letter in the fire.  “Ray-” Callum murmured from the side, holding their week-old daughter. Aisling was the most beautiful thing Rayla had ever seen, with her father’s green eyes and brown hair with ten fingers and ten toes.  The most elven thing about her was the little horn stubs on the top of her head.
“Don’t, Callum. Please.”
“We’ll make them understand.”
“How?!  You freed Runaan, Lain, Tiadrin, and many others from those coins.  We saved Zym and reunited him with Zubeia.  We defeated Aaravos and it’s STILL NOT ENOUGH.  They will never unghost me and let me go back home.” Rayla felt the tears pricking at the corners of her eyes and tried to hold them back, but they poured out. “And now I’m getting hormonal and just…UGH.”
She didn’t resist when she felt Callum come up behind her and wrap his arm around her waist.  “I’m sorry, Ray.  I don’t know why they are being so stubborn.  You don’t deserve this, but no matter what, you have me and Aisling, and Ezran and Soren.  You ARE home.”
“You don’t get it.”
Sighing, he moved away from her.  “What don’t I get?  Didn’t we agree that this is your home now?  Didn’t we say that, no matter what, we are each other’s home?”
“And I stand by that. But you cannot possibly understand what I am going through.  You still have your home.  You haven’t been banished and you can come and go as you please.  I need weeks of planning to not only go see my parents, but if I want to see my childhood homes, nobody can see me.  My culture, my language, everything, is basically lost to me. You don’t get it.”
Callum was quiet for a while, perhaps minding their daughter.  Rayla winced as she continued looking at the fire.  Wrapping her arms around herself, she felt even more terrible. She didn’t feel like she had taken to being a parent nearly as well as Callum had.  Maybe she wasn’t meant to be a parent.  She loved Aisling with everything she had, had carried the halfling in her belly for nine and a half months and delivered the child for hours, but she was also crying more, angered quicker, and didn’t stop Callum from getting out of bed at night to tend to the baby.  If anything, she hoped he would so she didn’t have to.
Callum finally came back to her and wrapped both his arms around her.  “You’re right, Ray, I don’t get it.  I cannot understand your pain and frustration.  And now that we have a child, I’m sure your feelings have only grown stronger because you want to share all of those things with her.  But I have to believe that we can make them welcome you back because I’ll hate them if I don’t.  We’re trying to forge peace and hate doesn’t belong anywhere near that.”
“I haven’t even thought about how it would affect Aisling.  Gods, I’m a terrible mother.”
“No, you aren’t.”
“Yes, I am.  I gave her a Xadian name and she can’t spend time in Moonshadow territory?  She’s cut off from half of herself and I’m sitting here thinking about how it affects me.” Rayla felt the panic rising in her chest.  “Callum, what if she hates me?  All I do is fuck up with her.  I’m not bonding with her like I should.  She already adores you more and I’m just there.”
“Look at me. Please.”  Slowly turning, Rayla raised her eyes to meet his, shocked at the tears in them.  “You aren’t fucking up.  You’re having a hard time, but that’s not that weird.  You heard Sabah and Amaya.  Most new mothers feel like this, and if it lasts longer, we’ll get you help. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad mother or something is wrong with you.  What did the mid-wife say?”
“That birth is traumatic for some and it takes longer to heal the mind than the body.”
“What else?”
“That, because I don’t have a support system from my home and my culture, I’m more at risk.”
“I’m so sorry that this is happening and I wish I could fix it for you.  I would fly into Silvergrove now and make them take you back if I thought it would work.  But you are not screwing up with Aisling.  She’s not cut off from half of herself because she has you.  If you want to only speak to her in High Elven, I will support that.  If you want to teach her to read it, I will find books every time we go to Xadia and ask Janai for some.  I’ll order ingredients from Xadia so she can have Xadian food.  I promise, I will do what I can to give you both a connection to your home because, even though we are each other’s home, you do still need a connection your culture.  Aisling does, too.”  Wrapping her arms around him tight, Rayla’s shoulders shook as she silently sobbed in his arms.  Callum kissed the top of her head and held her close, rocking her side to side as he so easily did their baby.
------------------------------------------------------
Rayla rolled her eyes as she stared at the curtains Callum had pulled over part of their bedroom. He said there were changes coming to the garden and it was a surprise so she wasn’t allowed to look.  It had been several months since the Council’s latest rejection of her return to Silvergrove and she was slowly starting accept that she would always be rejected.  All four of her parents had visited Aisling and had adored their grandchild, promising to visit as often as possible and give her a connection to her culture. Lain and Tiadrin were even considering permanently moving to Katolis so they could be more active in Rayla’s life and make up for lost time.
Stroking Aisling’s cheek with the back of her fingers, Rayla held her bairn close.  Sabah had been a big help in the journey into motherhood, visiting often and letting Rayla freely voice her concerns and fears. Months ago, Rayla had feared the judgmental eyes of others for not being close enough to her child, but she was slowly learning that it really was different for everyone.  Tiadrin had shyly admitted she had had a hard time post-partum with Rayla as well; lying in bed for days on end and Runaan and Ethari and Lain having to check in on her.  She still felt like a failure some days, but her child was healthy and growing with a flush on her cheeks.  “I love you, even if you do wake me and your father up.  We need to get you sleeping through the night, wee one.”
A knock of the door interrupted her gentle scolding, causing her to look up.  “Princess Rayla?”
“Aye?”
“Prince Callum requests you and Princess Aisling join him in the garden.”
“We’ll be there.” Standing up, she held Aisling close and left her bed chambers.  The trip to the gardens was a short one, but Callum had covered all the windows so Rayla couldn’t accidently get a peak at what he was doing.  “We’re finally going to see what your father has been up to.  I’ll bet you five whole jelly tarts he built a pond just to practice ocean magic.”
“I would take that bet.” She turned to the side to see Callum waiting for her.  “Ready to see the surprise?”
“I’ve been ready.” She turned to the glass doors leading to the garden and waited for Callum to open them.  He smiled at her and turned the handles.  As the doors opened, Rayla was hit with the smell of moonlilies.  She hadn’t smelled that scent outside of soap in years and her eyes watered in nostalgia and happiness.  Callum had planted a whole field of them as well as having built a gazebo.  “How did you do this?”
“Well,” running a hand through his hair, he gave her a sheepish smile, “it certainly wasn’t easy. The Council is being so stubborn with unghosting you, but I managed to convince them with a letter a day to let me have enough moonlilies to do this.  I told them that it was the least they could do for the mage who had decoined several of their citizens.  I know it’s not the same thing, but, at least, you can now have a piece of home right here in Katolis.  Let me show you the gazebo.”
He led them over, hand on the small of her back, and Rayla marveled at all the flowers before her. Moonlilies only bloomed at night, but their scent was still unmistakable.  The gazebo was wrought iron and featured multiple Moonshadow knots and symbols.  There were cushions and benches for sitting on.  “I could spend all day here.”
“I’m glad.”
“Thank you.  This is the sweetest, most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me.”
“I love you, Ray. This is our home, and, I hope, I made it feel a bit more like home for you.”
“You did.  I love you, too.”
The three of them spent all day in the gardens, having lunch and dinner in the gazebo and later joined by Ezran and Soren.  Sabah, Marcos, and their child joined them as well, Sabah’s heavily pregnant belly leading the way.  Rayla and Sabah chatted in their mixed High Elvens while Callum made his attempts and the little one in their group hung on every word.  It still hurt Rayla that she couldn’t go home freely, but she did feel a bit more at home now.  Maybe one day, she would get to show Aisling and any other children she and Callum had Silvergrove and other Moonshadow territories.  Until then, the gardens would do quite nicely.
------------------------
This fic is something of an ode to my mother who had post-partum depression and had no real support system (family more than a 1000 miles away) besides my father and an ode to my grandmother who had her last child in a country and a culture that were not her own and who regrets not teaching her children more about her language and culture or about my grandfather's (English was the common language between them, so that's what they spoke in the house). I tried to convey their thoughts and feelings to the best of my abilities and to bring in the realties of raising a child in a multicultural, international relationship.

Not Nothing - Part 1 - Janaya Fic
x-posted on my AO3 account, link on my main page
Summary:
What exactly did it mean for them to hold hands like that? So far Amaya and Janai had avoided any real discussion of their interest in each other, but maybe it was time to figure it out.
Notes:
These two have captured my imagination, and the tiny detail of Amaya still wearing her burned glove pushed me to start writing about them.
I've made a few assumptions about how much sign language Janai can understand. Since they've been traveling alone together, I have assumed that she knows some simple practical phrases as well as finger-spelling. In general, I am trying to be mindful of the communication barriers there, but I also feel like Amaya tends to be good at making herself understood.
Also, this was meant to be a one-off ficlet, but it got away from me. Rather than chasing the whole thing down the rabbit hole, I decided to post this first part, but there may be more to come! (Annnd it might be a touch steamier)
The battle was won, the Dragon Queen was awake, and they finally had a chance to breathe. The happy chaos of relief swept them up, everyone catching up with everyone else. Callum had discovered he was a mage, which felt both strange and right. He was truly Sarai’s child. And Ezran. Ezran ...she wished her sister could see him. He tumbled with the tiny dragon, still able to take pure delight in that connection.
Her focus on her nephews had allowed Janai space, but now Amaya began to wonder if it was too much. Or perhaps it was the raucous crowd or Gren’s cheerful attempts to make friends with the elf. More likely, it was her still-fresh grief. Janai had retreated into quiet as much as was possible on the crowded spire, and they had not spoken since she’d given in and held Amaya’s hand.
When she asked Gren to keep an eye on the boys, he gave her a knowing look.
“Later,” she signed. “I want to know everything.”
“So do I.”
His cheeky grin made her snort, and she punched his shoulder before making her way out of the main cavern. Night had fallen while she was inside, but sleep felt days away.
She found Janai grooming the mount they’d flown to the spire. The woman fumbled with the brush and jerked her head up at Amaya’s approach.
“Oh, it’s you.”
Amaya lifted an eyebrow. “Do you want me to go?”
Janai met her eyes for a heartbeat then shook her head. The general felt a smile curve her lips, but it faltered as they both studied each other for a moment. It had been years since Amaya felt that flutter in her stomach, and something in Janai’s expression said she was as unfamiliar and uncertain about it as well.
“Let’s fly,” Amaya offered. Whatever came next, it was unlikely to be made easier by someone disrupting them, and their journey to the boys had proved they could manage to communicate on their own.
The relief on Janai’s face confirmed her instinct, and they worked together to get the fire gryphon geared up. Amaya swung up behind Janai in the saddle. The woman stiffened when Amaya’s arms slid around her, but then they were off, lifting into the night air.
Perhaps she had pushed too hard. Perhaps the glances exchanged in the heat of battle had merely been ...but as they turned away from the battlefield, she felt Janai sink slowly back against her. She let her arms tighten fractionally around Janai and was rewarded with a small press back against her chest.
With her arms devoted to keeping her from falling off, Amaya simply rested her chin on Janai’s shoulder. As Janai let out a long breath, Amaya found her resting almost fully back against her chest, her body heat seeping through Amaya’s armor, leaving the rest of her to feel chilled. She could not stop her hold from turning protective, and they simply flew like that for a time.
Janai eventually brought them down to land on the bank of a small lake. With some reluctance, Amaya slid off their mount then held out her hand to help Janai. The elf studied her hand for a moment before reaching out. Instead of taking it though, she brushed her finger over the hole burned into Amaya’s glove, just grazing her palm still raw from the burn. The contact sent a shiver down Amaya’s spine, and she looked up at her.
“I owe you a new pair of gloves.”
Amaya blinked and shook her head. “You owe me nothing.”
A faint weary smile touched the corners of Janai’s lips, and she took Amaya’s hand, using it to swing down from the mount. When the elf kept hold of her hand instead of dropping it, Amaya closed her fingers around her hand in return. It felt ridiculous that simply holding the Janai’s hand sent warmth through Amaya’s whole body, but there it was.
Janai sunk down on a low flat rock, and Amaya sat down next to her. She found herself watching their hands together as Janai stared out over the lake. With a little squeeze, Janai let go of her hand and tapped Amaya’s shoulder to draw her gaze up to her face. In the dim light offered by the gryphon’s tail, the elf’s eyes seemed to glow.
“So what happens now?”  The question tumbled out so quickly that Amaya struggled to catch it, and they ended up staring at each other for a moment before Amaya worked it out.
She lifted one shoulder. “Everyone is still working to-”
Janai shaking her head cut her off.“No. I meant...”
Amaya tilted her head at Janai’s hesitation, watching as the elf worked her lips. Finally, she just gestured between them.
Heat rose in Amaya’s cheeks, and she couldn’t help grinning. She lidded her eyes and gave Janai a sly look. “What do you want to happen now?”
It was Janai’s turn to blush, and she ducked, looking out at the lake again. Wordlessly, she shifted closer, pressing her shoulder against Amaya’s. The warmth of her made Amaya sigh softly, and she returned the pressure, letting their silence hang for a few moments.
“There’s no hurry.” Amaya glanced up at Janai to make certain she was watching. As usual, she’d focused on Amaya’s hands the instant she lifted them. “We held hands. We’re not betrothed.”
Confusion crossed her face instead of the laugh Amaya was hoping for. “What is-” Janai copied the sign for betrothed, fumbling a little with it.
Amaya slowly finger-spelled it for her and watched her lips as she spelled it out.
“Be- oh! Betrothed!”
“Not. Not betrothed.” Amaya corrected quickly with a laugh. Janai, however, still wore a serious look, and Amaya settled as the elf searched her face. The familiar feeling that she had missed something crept down her spine, and she lifted a questioning eyebrow at Janai. “We’re not. Right?”
Janai quickly shook her head. “No, but ...”
Amaya narrowed her eyes. “But?”
“But holding hands for the Dragon Queen also doesn’t mean nothing either.” The way Janai’s brow creased spoke of real worry.
Amaya slid her arm through the elf’s and squeezed it against her side. It was still hard to wrap her head around all that the Dragon Queen meant to the elves, but Janai was right. It was more than nothing, and the tension of not knowing held Janai rigid.
Amaya glanced up at the elf, her eyes sliding over the set of her jaw before she met Janai’s eyes. They way they glittered in the dim light made her breath catch, and she signed again, more slowly this time, without a hint of teasing. “What do you want to happen now?”
The moments that Janai studied her face stretched on, and the elf’s lips worked a little without forming words. Finally, she dipped her head forward, her eyes closing as she brought her forehead to rest on Amaya’s.
Amaya’s eyes slipped closed too as she let out a shuddery breath. All the tension of the last weeks suddenly dissolved, and tears burned behind her eyelids. She could feel Janai’s breath hitching too. Her hand shot up to cradle Janai’s cheek, and the elf instantly leaned into the contact, pressing her cheek against Amaya’s ragged glove.
Janai’s hand sought hers, their fingers tangling together against the elf’s cheek. They rested there together. There was too much. Too much between them, too much behind each of them. They could find the words and signs later.

fics fighting fires: 4
With a biiiiig thank you to @best-friend-quads, who asked for Janai learning to sign in exchange for her donation to the hard working Firies in Australia. If you would also like to donate in exchange for fic, please check out this post here!

When the battle is done, after what’s left of the corrupted human soldiers are arrested, and after Queen Zubeia wakes, it becomes abundantly clear to Janai that having an interpreter around every moment of every day is impractical.
It’s not that she doesn’t trust them. Kazi is far too sweet - far too skittish, even - to disobey orders or betray their privacy. The human commander - Gren, she thinks his name is - is the same. He has a rapport with Amaya that goes beyond the chain of command. There’s friendship there; a kind of trust that runs far deeper than the average general and his or her aide. Janai’s certain that there’s not even a need to ask - what secrets they learn from interpreting her conversations with Amaya will surely remain secrets forever -
But still. It’s not really the same.
Amaya has no problems understanding her. She reads lips without trouble. If she didn’t have to sign, she might fool anyone into thinking her deafness is a farce.
It’s the other way around that’s problematic. Amaya can’t communicate back because Janai’s very limited knowledge of Katolan Sign Language just isn’t enough. It’d be nice, she thinks, if they could have a conversation without the need for an interpreter. It just… may take some time to learn.
They’ll be on the move again soon. She’s Queen now, and she’s needed in Lux Aurea. Amaya, she imagines, will head back to Katolis to watch over her nephew, the king. She’s loathe to admit it, but Janai had enjoyed the company. It’s been… pleasant, to have someone around with similar values, and similar strengths. She thinks she might even have -
She doesn’t quite finish the thought. It’s a bit early for that yet, and, in any case, if she pretends it’s not true, it’ll be easier to ignore the yearning between her ribs.
Queen Zubeia’s antechamber is emptying. The remaining troops of all three armies are making ready to leave at the foot of the Storm Spire, so she imagines that’s probably where Kazi, and Commander Gren, and Amaya are. She spots the other nephew, though - the mage - talking quietly to his beloved. Rayla, she thinks. The banished Moonshadow elf. An odd pairing, but then, she’s not really one to talk.
Janai hesitates. Waits until Rayla is called away and Callum is left smiling after her before she approaches.
“Prince Callum,” she says awkwardly. She throws in a bow.
The prince flushes and waves her off. “Um. No. Your Majesty, there’s no need -”
She almost chuckles. He’s a kind boy. More proof that humans aren’t so bad after all. “Then there’s no need to call me ‘Your Majesty’, either.” She lets her lips twitch, endeared by him, and nervous for herself. “I - I would like a favour,” begins. “I need… to tell your aunt something. But in private. On my own.”
“Oh.” Prince Callum grins awkwardly. “Sure. What would you like to say?”
-
I have a secret.
Janai’s hands are unsteady but if Amaya notices, her surprise hides it well. She chuckles, in the end, impressed by the effort. A secret? She signs, curious.
Janai takes a breath. I do think you’re cute.
There’s a long moment where Amaya signs nothing, and Janai says nothing, suddenly terrified she might have misread the signs. But Amaya snorts loudly, her smile flattered, her cheeks just the slightest bit pink, and Janai releases the breath that’s been caught in her throat, trying not to frown too hard while she interprets Amaya’s response.
She’ll have to check with Kazi later, but she thinks she gets most of it. It’s hard to misinterpret the cheeky glint in Amaya’s eye.
You’re pretty cute yourself. But don’t worry. Your secret’s safe with me.

🌀Book II:Sky🌀
⛵Voyage of The Ruthless⛵
- Be nicer to Callum, Rayla. At least he's trying
- So this is a little hit and miss moment, but when Ez and Zym are falling down the cliff, he actually throws Zym up towards Rayla as if trying to save the dragonling
- I love the moment of the trio crouched down behind the boxes
- Human!Rayla makes a comeback with some pretty accurate stuff about humans
- Callum is just done with everything. The day before was harsh so I can't really blame him
- Villads is such a nice dude, greeting the 'dogs' as well as introducing his own pet parrot Berto. I bet he also secretly loves animals
- I really like how the guy doesn't let his blindless slow him down. This is one of the things TDP does quite well: disabled and LGBTQ+ characters aren't questioned, they just are and that's it. I wish our world could be like this instead of a mess happening right now
- So now that knives and blood come into play is when you start questioning things, Virus?
- Rayla cares for Callum, but does it in a not so good way
- At least Zym gets Callum on things Lujanne did not
- Good choice, Callum
- NO, ZYM!!!
- Little do Amaya and Janai know, they're vattling each other's future wives. Also Sun!Janai
- Callum, stop scaring others like this. And Lightning!Zym
- Rayllum hug
- Oh shit, the other rulers agreed!
💌Breaking the Seal💌
- Not gonna lie, the Pentarchy building looks beautiful
- Aanya may be young, but she has braincells
- Rayla, Bait and Callum are just having a bad day. Well, at least Bait and Callum find comfort in each other
- I kinda want to know the history of Human Kingdoms now
- TDP Crew totally made Queen Aanya to be a young and wise child queen who roasts everyone on their old ways of doing stuff to reflect how the youngsters nowadays are more mature than boomers and who roast them about it
- Harrow's speech is extremely important to me
- Both Amaya and Sarai have a dirty mind. Probanly came from their parents
- Badass queens who aren't afraid to ask for help. I do, however, would've liked to know why they didn't ask for help earlier during the famine
- I love how the flashback shows how morally grey Virus, Harrow and Sarai are. Everyone are both right and wrong. It's perfect!
- I wish we get the 'brave idiot' moment with Callum and Rayla in the future post-TTM.
- Oh shoot, the Magma Titan's dead.
- Callum finally getting the courage to open the letter accompanied by the strikes
- Oh shit, it alive!!! And angry!
🧡Heart of a Titan🧡
- Harrow failed as a king, but succeeded as a father
- I actually feel sorry for the Magma Titan. Dude was just trying to sleep and suddenly some humans come to fight him
- Ouch. Getting that scar definetly hurt like hell
- I don't know how to feel about Sarai killing the Titan. Yes, they needed the heart, but she opposed the plan. Or MAYBE Virus is telling the flashback wrong...
- Villads is such a crazy yet wise grandfather figure to everyone
- Oh no, Thunder found them!
- Viren IS a villain, but this moment proves that he's not entirely evil. He still somewhat cared. It, however, doesn't excuse him being an abusive father to his children
- I headcanon that Villafs has several grandchildren who he sometimes takes on his voyages to teach them about sailing as well as giving them wise words
- NOOO, NOT THE QUEENS!
- NOT SARAI TOO!
- Aanya is a literal queen
- A narrative of love 🥺
- Aaravos' name foreshadowed!
- Now I want to give Bait belly rubs!
- Yes, the land!
- Oh shoot, we got a dragon! A much bigger dragon!

The Dragon Prince: A (Speculative) Timeline
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD
This a timeline I've compiled from the show, information from the creators, and my own speculations. Also from this post by @mimosaeyes and this post by @solitae
Things here may be debunked once we have new information.
Suggestions for edits are welcome!
(And honestly, there's probably going to be a bunch of typos.)
Part of this is under a read more, because it's long.
Timeline:
5,000 years ago
1. The first elves appeared; at this time, they are not differentiated by primal sources
2. Dragons and elves are not united
3. Humans were struggling and suffered from starvation
2,000 years ago
1. The Rise of Elarion
Presumably when the City of Elarion was founded; still possible that it was named after a person.
2. Humanity found their way to magic; this allowed their civilization to begin to thrive
Presumably when Aaravos gifted magic/dark magic to humans.
1,200 years ago
1. The Era of Sol Regem, the first king of the dragons
2. The adventures of Sir Phineas Cursed; travelled together with Delilah Giehl, who became the youngest known university professor at the age of twelve
3. Dark magic has become a problem, with mass poaching of magical creatures
4. The confrontation between the human dark mage Ziard and Sol Regem
Sol Regem gives the ultimatum of either humans giving up dark magic, which humans thought of as what allowed them to live and thrive, or the destruction of the City of Elarion, which was home to hundreds of thousands of people; also calls humans lesser beings.
Ziard refuses to give up dark magic, and shows horried disbelief at the ultimatum. Sol Regem goes to destroy the City of Elarion. Ziard uses dark magic to absorb fire birds in order to try to stop Sol Regem and defend the City of Elarion; Sol Regem sees this and flies back to Ziard. Ziard throws a dark magic fireball at Sol Regem; Sol Regem breathes fire at Ziard. Sol Regem is blinded; Ziard is killed.
Between 1,200 - 1,000 years ago
1. Sol Regem is no longer the king of the dragons
2. Dragons and elves unite
3. The war between dragons/elves and humans begins
Moonshadow elves, Sunfire elves, and Skywing elves are shown to have fought. Whether Earthblood elves or Ocean Primal elves fought is unknown, though some speculate they did not.
Aaravos is also shown on the battlefield, but whether he participated or simply watched (possibly by astral projection) is unclear. It is speculated/assumed that other Startouch elves did not participate.
1,000 years ago
1. The Era of Luna Tenebris, queen of the dragons and the second known dragon monarch
2. The Judgement of the Half Moon
The humans lose the war against the elves and the dragons. Luna Tenebris orders humans to be exiled. All humans are driven out of Eastern Xadia, similar to the real-world Trail of Tears. Sunfire elves and Moonshadow elves are shown to have participated. Whether or not the other four elven races participated is unclear.
3. The Great Xadian Split
Xadia is divided in two. Powerful elven mages create a physical barrier, a river of lava, to keep humans from re-entering Eastern Xadia.
Between 1,000 - 300 years ago
1. The Mage Wars
On the human side of Xadia, powerful human mages become warlords who fight for power. This continues for a long time, and is an era in which Western Xadia is violent and war-torn.
1. The Era of Avizandum, king of the dragons and the third known dragon monarch; married to Zubeia, queen of the dragons. He is known to the humans as "Thunder," and guards the Western/Eastern Xadian border
2. The Orphan Queen, the first queen of Katolis, ancestor of Harrow and Ezran
The Mage Wars end and the human kingdom of Katolis is founded, presumably by the Orphan Queen.
It is assumed that she found her way to Xadia and somehow met/encountered Aaravos, by which she gained the Key of Aaravos and took it back to Katolis. The Key of Aaravos has since been passed down through the royal family of Katolis.
The Orphan Queen's true name, as of now, is unknown.
3. The Fallen Star, assumed/speculated to be Aaravos, the Startouch Archmage.
This is possibly when Avizandum discovers Aaravos's involvement with humans. Aaravos is imprisoned.
4. A spell is cast so that all text that humans have on Aaravos is unreadable
Between 300 - 100 years ago
1. The other four human kingdoms, Del Bar, Evenere, Neolandia, and Duren are founded
2. Western Xadia is now called the Human Kingdoms, or the Pentarchy; Eastern Xadia is simply referred to as "Xadia"
3. Unnamed Battle between Katolis and Xadia
It was assumed that the battle shown in the intro in the very first episode was when King Harrow of Katolis killed Avizandum in revenge for the death of his wife, Queen Sarai of Katolis. However, season 3 has revealed that this is not the case.
This battle took place sometime after Katolis was founded. Katolis's banners show the symbol for the queen's crown, so I speculate that Katolis was ruled by a queen, not a king, at this time. Whether this queen is the Orphan Queen, or one of her later descendants, is unknown.
Avizandum, Moonshadow elves, Skywing elves, and Sunfire elves are shown to have participated. Whether Earthblood elves or Ocean Primal elves participated is unknown.
Sunfire Queen Aditi, grandmother to Janai and Sunfire Queen Khessa, is also shown to have fought in this battle. Her fate is unknown, though it is speculated to have something to do with humans.
Though elven lifespans vary by race, they live about as long as humans, with the exception of the Startouch elves. While the battle could have taken place closer to 300 years ago, around the time Katolis was founded, it is unlikely that Queen Aditi was alive at this time. I speculate that it is more likely for this to have occurred closer to about 100 years ago. However, if this battle did take place 300 years ago when Katolis was founded, it is possible that Aaravos was involved, which could be how he knows what happened to Queen Aditi; his involvement could also have been a factor in why he was imprisoned.
The specifics as to why this battle occurred, or whether it was one battle or part of a longer war, is unknown.

On a discovery made by High Mage Lord Viren, he, Harrow, Sarai, the queens of Duren, and some soldiers go to Xadia and kill a magma titan to use its heart in a spell that will warm the land and provide food to save their people.

Viren intends to destroy the egg, to prevent the new dragon from being a future threat. Rayla's mother convinces Viren to keep the egg alive.

6, 14, 18, and 19 for the ask game you reblogged earlier? i hope that's not too many lol (also, good gay blog. ...i just realized u were also mermistans, which is also a nice little blog i'd already followed!! i should've noticed it was owned by the same person lol)
6. What’s the last thing you read that made you laugh? it was a jaime/brienne fic au in which they work in an office, and the author made a shared pov chapter that got me so soft and laughing
14. (For authors) Post a line of dialogue from one of your WIPs without context: aahhh. omg. i'm kinda in between writing right now? i haven't started the third janaya prompt, nor the third chapter of my jaime/brienne au. i also made a horrible decision of coming back to my old ship since 2014 and writing scenes from my au there. so here it goes:
"You don't have to," he half-smiled.
"I know," she said, perhaps the most in the past hour, and lifted a finger to pop the plug with her telekinesis. The water swirled and drained in a flush as she held his eyes before leaving the room.
18. Do you have a fic reading/writing routine: ABSOLUTELY NOT. for reading, i check the tag everyday, but mostly i follow the fics i bookmarked. for writing, i used to write almost every day when i wrote part 1 of my jaime/brienne au, to the point where i felt guilty if i skipped a day. so, i try to follow my to write list and write as much as i can everyday, and after i post the fic i give myself a few days off to recharge myself
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?: i have too many favorite characters. for janaya, i think amaya is the more "dominate" and flirty one, while janai is more shy but once she gets used to amaya she like chills out. also they're totally gonna make private jokes like all the time
"a very gay blog" that made me laugh. i'm pan, actually, and only came to terms with that last year. i'm also demisexual and because i was struggling with trying to find out if i'm pan or not and the huge amount of acephobia on tumblr it was difficult for me to start being comfortable with saying things like "omg i'm so gay for x" so, um, yeah. be gay, do crimes
and yes i am the person behind mermistans, tho i haven't posted in ages because i fell from the she ra fandom after s2 because it felt so pointless for me. kinda lost it. maybe i'll get back tho. we'll see
thank you so much!!!!

Why is it that Rayla seems to be showing symptoms of ptsd but Ezran and Callum are none the worse for wear?
ptsd and trauma manifests differently in everyone and “through the moon” is purposefully rayla centric. one sympton of ptsd can be panic attacks, which callum has at the end of s2 in his nightmares, and questioning who you are after trauma (ie. doing dark magic and the toll it took on his body). seeing rayla almost die. meanwhile ezran saw viren get murdered and also watched his own knights/guards/staff turn on him.
so i would imagine the boys’ ptsd would manifest something like this:
Cry often
Try to be as nice as possible at own expenses to the point of mental breakdown (ezran in particular)
Have a need to be “right” or be valid
Panic attacks
Aggressively emotional (which rayla already has)
Panic at the slightest loud sound or certain words and get upset openly or loudly (ezran and rayla in particular)
Feel anger and intense self hatred at being incorrect or messing up (callum in particular)
Have a need to justify emotions without anyone asking or demanding (callum in particular)
(post here). like i said, if we were going for realism, every single main character in tdp would have ptsd: amaya, janai, rayla, soren, claudia, ezran, callum, etc. just from being in that final battle in the series alone, never mind everything else. do i actually think the show is going to do a deep dive into all of those characters’ specific journeys and recovery arcs? no. that’s what fanon has been for, for a long, long time.
but just because we’re not seeing them have nightmares in the 10 pages we have leaked of an add on graphic novel doesn’t mean they’re not experiencing ptsd. I know Ezran in “Book One: Moon” sings the lullaby Harrow would sing to him every night to himself that first night out of the castle. That falls into “Very attached to certain things and will lash out if they’re disturbed or insulted” as a coping mechanism and a feeling of safety and routine. And that’s just the first night.
it shows that Ezran has Phoe-Phoe’s sacrifice still weighing heavily on his mind, do the point he’s willing to shirk responsibilities to do so (absence of direct communication to avoid upsetting confrontation) and that Callum is aware of Rayla’s mental state and is working to be support for her.
symptoms of ptsd are just how the body and mind copes with what’s happened to cause the trauma and there can be various traumatic events and triggers. some people are also good at hiding those symptoms or there aren’t as obvious as others.
rayla’s trauma stems from a place, right now, of not having closure and being very far away from her home. the boys, alternatively, are home (even if things are different) and have closure on their parents’ deaths even if they’re still adjusting to that loss and found out about those losses earlier than rayla did with time to grieve. rayla had one day in 3x04 and then in 3x08 had just found out her birth parents were dead rather than missing and then it was battle time. she had no boat impasse or trip back to xadia where there was nothing to do but grieve, tbh.
so yeah, i’m not surprised that the boys have adjusted better than she has

Replay ch. 4
Callum gulped as he sent the text to Rayla.  She was fully in her rights to reject a drawing session in the woods.  Not only that, but he was asking her to bring her own clothes because he didn’t know her exact measurements.  Was he asking too much?  He read the text again.  ‘If it’s not too much trouble, I was really imagining drawing you among the trees, like a faerie or an elf.  If you have any flowy clothes that you are alright with getting dirty, please wear those. I’ll send you the location if you’re comfortable.  If not, we can do the beach or my backyard.  I just can’t imagine drawing you in a confined space like my studio. I don’t think it would fit your spirit.’
Callum internally screamed. Did he really send that?  She was going to rescind her acceptance of his request to draw her, wasn’t she?  ‘Her spirit’? He had met her once!  What was wrong with him?  It was true, though.  That was something about her that, despite the suit and the situation that they met in, made him feel like she would be more at home running barefoot through the forest or relaxing by the sea.
Either way, now all he had to do was wait for her to reply back.  If she rejected the offer, well, he didn’t want to think about that, because that meant he probably was never going to see her again.  Meeting her once was enough to make her haunt his every thought for the past three days.  While he and his friends had finally ironed out how they were going to go full-time with YouTube, she had been right in the back of his mind.
He had looked up her name and ran across a few things.  She really was the daughter of two bodyguards of the British royal family and her adoptive fathers ran a famous Celtic jewelry shop in Aberdeen, the designs being a mix of traditional shapes and styles and new materials.  She did dance for years as a way to channel her energy. There was even a video online of her at sixteen doing a ballet routine to a Kylie Minogue and Madonna compilation. She had inserted traditional Irish step dance in a way Callum never would have thought worked but it did. Maybe that was because of the sheer joy on her face as she moved.  That made her departure from dance all the stranger and it’s also where information about her basically stopped.  The most recent thing he found was that she worked for Patel and Associates Anti-Fraud Law Office.
A lawyer…his faerie was a lawyer.  It certainly explained the suit but it was almost absurd.  Here he was imagining her running through the trees and she was surrounded by paperwork in her daily life.  Did she enjoy it?  Did she like spicy food?  What was her type?
Callum hit his head against his desk.  He needed to stop letting his mind drift to her and whether or not she could ever be interested in him.  There was no way someone like him was her type.  She couldn’t hide just how toned her long legs her in her suit.  She probably worked out often while he was a lazy twig that indulged in sleeping in too much.  Also, she was a lawyer.  A lawyer falling for a YouTuber/artist?  Yeah, right.
A stray chip hit his forehead.  Callum looked up to glare at Soren.  “What?”
“You thinking about that hot girl at the cheese shop again?”
“What?  No!”  Callum could feel the blush creepy up on his cheeks and all the way to his ears.
“It’s fine if you were. She was smoking hot.  I never thought I would find white hair hot, but DAMN.”
Claudia hummed in acknowledgement.  “I’m calling it now; she’s Bi or Pan.”
“What makes you say that?” Soren mumbled around a bunch of chips.
Claudia winked.  “Gaydar.”
“Wishful thinking?”
“Maybe some of that, too,” Claudia shrugged.
“She’s got two dads,” Callum mumbled.
Soren, Claudia, and Ezran all turned to him.  “Does she now?” Claudia asked.
“Yeah.  She told me at the shop.  It was the painting of Aunt Amaya and Aunt Janai that made her accept my offer.  She was raised by her parents’ friends, hence, two dads.  They run Gael Jewelers in Aberdeen.”
Claudia immediately pulled out her phone, probably to look them up.  Shortly after, she whistled.  “Wow. She comes from a really good-looking family.  Her mom is a totally MILF.”
Soren rolled his eyes. “Claudia, you can’t just-” Claudia shoved the picture in his face. “MILF alert.”
“Mm-hmm.”  Claudia scrolled through.  “Ethari and Runaan and are also incredibly attractive.  Damn.  What is in the water in Scotland?”
Callum rolled his eyes. “Guys.  Let’s focus.  Do we need a production manager?”
Claudia shrugged.  “My vote is you’re in charge of creative for group projects, we run our own channels, and we hire an editing assistant.”
“We also need a social media manager.  Ez can’t do it all on his own while he’s in school.”
Ezran nodded.  “It’s nice that you guys do your own channel stuff, but, sometimes, it would be nice to have some help.”
“Do we need a strong social media presence?  We have YouTube and Twitter.  Isn’t that enough?”
Ezran scratched the back of his neck.  “Maybe? Claudia’s got a large following on Tumblr ever since she came out during one of her make-up tutorials.  Her super casual ‘my ex-girlfriend taught me how to do this and this is the first time I’ve done this eyeliner look since we broke-up’ just made her blow-up and our channel gained thousands of followers over-night.”
Callum nodded.  “We gained a lot of followers after I did that art tutorial with Janai, too.  A lot of people just went gaga over her and I see a lot of requests for her to come back on the channel.”
“Which is where a social media manager could come in handy.  Maybe they could track requests so we don’t have to?”
Soren sighed, taking another handful of his chips.  “We also need someone to help us with events.  Getting us into them, working booths…being famous is hard work.”
“We aren’t famous, Soren.”
“Beg to differ.  I get stopped all the time.”  Soren flexed his arm.  “And it’s not just because of these guns.”  The other three in the room rolled their eyes.
“Himbo,” Claudia coughed, no-so-subtly.
“WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?! Stop using words I don’t know!”
“Stop being a himbo.”
“CLAUDS!”
Ezran and Callum shared a look, snorting at their childhood friends’ teasing.  Soren and Claudia couldn’t go five minutes without teasing each other or making a serious situation humorous.  “Can’t take them anywhere,” Callum whispered.
Ezran nodded.  “Bait is better behaved.”
Callum eyed the frog in the glass bowl Ezran took with him wherever he could.  “He’s glaring at me again.”
“Because you won’t stop thinking about that girl.”
“It’s not my fault she won’t leave my head.  You saw her, Ez.”
“Yeah, she’s beautiful, but she’s not running through my head like she is your’s.  Are you even ready for another relationship?  After Melissa-”
“Melissa was a nightmare. She constantly asked to be introduced in our videos.  I didn’t know at the time, but you were right, she approached me because she wanted to piggyback off our growing fame.”  Callum ran a hand through his hair.  “I was an idiot.”
Ezran put a hand on his shoulder.  “I wasn’t going to say that.  I was going to say that Melissa really hurt you and I want you to be careful.  You didn’t even like her that much, if I remember correctly.”
“She was nice, pretty, liked some of the same things I did.  But she didn’t really inspire me to be better or push my art.  She only encouraged the YouTube thing, not what I actually like.”
“She is why we got almost fifty thousand subscribers in one week, though.  That story broke and you had to give that little video and it really stuck with people.”
Callum remembered that video.  As a way to quiet down any questions, he had made a short video detailing how they had met (in a coffee shop), why they had never gone public (he had wanted to keep his private life and his YouTube life separate), that she had met his family but they kept it hush-hush (impossible not to meet Ezran after knowing Callum for a week), and that the break-up had not been mutual.  Callum had broken-up with her because he had felt that it wasn’t working because they wanted different things.  Melissa pushed the YouTube thing, and there was nothing wrong with that, but, if Callum was going to be known for social media and videos, he wanted to be proud of what he put out into the universe.  He loved his art more, and, if he could, that would be all he did.  Melissa had wanted to do sponsorships and Callum hadn’t.  They just had different values and desires and no one else was owed this knowledge, but Callum had been forced to do damage control because people would not stop asking.  “Yeah. I was really surprised that that happened.”
“People value honesty. I think it comes across in our videos and your art tutorials that you are not in this for the fame.  We’ve done meet and greets and you are just awkward as anything.  Melissa showed her true colors on her own with posts afterwards.”  Callum didn’t even want to think about how Melissa had tried to monetize their break-up.  It had been bizarre to see her sponsored by a make-up wipe company to tell her side of the story, which basically confirmed everything in Callum’s video, but with the caveat that she had wanted him to reach new heights and that YouTube and not his ‘lame art’, as she had put it, was the way to do that.  Their fans had not taken kindly to that and Melissa had lost thousands of followers she had gained overnight in even less time.
“Social media is weird, Ez. No matter what, we have got to stay away from the drama.  We do not want to be involved in any of that.”
“Yep.  That’s why I think a social media manager could help.  A good one.”
“I’m all for it if that’s what keeps our noses clean.”  Callum straightened when his phone alerted him to a text.
He opened it to see it was from Rayla ‘The woods?  OK.  I’m still bringing my friend.  When’s good for you?  It would have to be on a weekend for me because of work.  Sorry about that.’
“Holy shit,” Callum whispered.
“What?” Ezran looked over his shoulder to read the text.  “That text sounds weird.  Callum-”
“I know, Ez, but she didn’t say ‘no’.  She didn’t reject me.”  Ezran raised a brow.  “You know what I mean.”
“You’ve got it bad.”
“I just need to draw her to get her out of my system.”
“Either that or she is your muse.  Poor Aunt Janai.  She was having so much fun being your muse.  So was Khessa.”  Callum chuckled.  Khessa, Janai’s older sister, did enjoy modeling for Callum.  His exhibit on women of color had been a smash hit in part because of her always accepting when he asked.  She had once modeled with a crown while sitting on a throne and that particular piece now hung in her house in her living room, showed off to everyone who came over.  Callum smiled as he remembered that exhibit.  His crowing achievement, to this day, was the portrait of his mother, eyes softened, and an easy, loving smile on her lips.  People thought of her as this rough former military general and tactician who once taught at military academies.  They didn’t know that she had a sweet tooth or that her relationship with Callum’s father had led her to leaving the military because she saw that the push for peace was more important.
She was now known for her discussions on US-South Korean and US-Thai relations because both her parents were immigrants and her own history in South Korea.  Sarai and Amaya had both spent half their childhoods in South Korea in Korean schools, helping Sarai learn how the rest of the world saw the States. She and Amaya and joined the military because it helped pay for university, but both found they were really good at it. So good at it, they extended their contracts before finally leaving to focus on family and peaceful negotiations. Callum was proud of his mother’s work and was proud of the picture showing the softer side of her so many people didn’t see.
He shook his head and sent a quick text to Rayla that next Saturday worked for him if it worked for her.  This Saturday was in a few days and, if things went how Ezran wanted, they were probably going to be doing interviews all weekend for a social media manager.  “Let’s get a social media manager, Ez.”
“YES!”
------------------------------------------
Rayla smiled at the text. The woods was a bit of a strange option, but she was excited.  She hadn’t had a chance to go running through the trees barefoot in years.  She was going to have to ask Corvus if he was willing to head out early so she could do so.  She mentally thought of her wardrobe and realized she didn’t have anything flowing that she was willing to get dirty.  She was going to have to go thrift store shopping.
Was she really going to go buy a dress so a random artist that she had met one time could draw her surrounded by trees?  Yeah, she was and she was going to look so good she was going to haunt his mind like he haunted her’s.  His voice followed her and she had watched all of his videos in three days.  She barely slept because she wanted to hear him more or see him smile or laugh.  She felt like one of those stalkers who was convinced a famous person was in love with them, but she had met him in real life.  He had approached her, he had asked to draw her.  Either way, she wanted him to be tongue-tied when he saw her and, hopefully, she was going to quell some of the fire that refused to leave her belly since they had shaken hands.

It’s discussed a lot about how Callum will react to Runaan when he gets out of the coin, but how do you think some of the other human characters would react to him? Like Soren, Amaya and Gren (it’s unclear if Gren ever actually *saw* Runaan, but for argument’s sake, let’s say he did.)
Ooh what a fun question, anon!
Let’s see, Soren. Well, by the time Runaan is freed, Soren will probably have had months or years as Rayla’s ally, even if he spends all his time with Ezran as his Crownguard. I also hope that Soren gets some real-world experience and education at the Storm Spire and in Lux Aurea before he returns to Katolis, if Ezran’s going to return to being king (which, idk, technically I think Soren’s king now, actually, as VIren’s heir, but that’s a whole ‘nother post).
Soren is a genuinely warm guy. If he gets some time to learn about what Avizandum and Zubeia’s side of the war has been like, as well as Khessa and Janai’s, he’ll have a pretty balanced viewpoint on the conflict as a whole, which will make him a really solid adviser for Ezran, considering the training and actual battle experience he already has.
He may even contribute to the chain of events that frees Runaan, since he’s the one who put Runaan in the dungeon in the first place. His piece of the puzzle is that Runaan isn’t dead, and was imprisoned instead of being killed, and he knows exactly where and how, and also what Runaan looks like. He got a fistful of that long white hair, which is Runaan’s most distinctive physical trait (out of several, okay), so if anyone ever brings up that hair–Soren included–it’ll be obvious who’s being referred to, and that could direct various characters in their hunt/quest to free/locate him.
Tumblr media
But what would he do upon seeing Runaan again? They’ll definitely remember each other. I think the key element will be this: time has passed eventfully for Soren, but it won’t have passed in the same way for Runaan. He’ll be stuck, trapped out of the world, alone with the same thoughts over and over again and no new input to help him grow and change. So Soren will probably have come a long way in his personal development, while Runaan won’t have done much more than spin in circles and rethink his choices.
I think the first thing Runaan would do is go on the defensive–or the offensive–with any weapon he can possibly get his hands on, and the first thing Soren would do is to hold up his hands and say, “Whoa there, Rayla’s Pointy Dad Number Two, I’m not gonna pull your hair this time. Promise.
“And uhh, look. I wanna apologize on behalf of my dad. Viren. The old High Mage who kept you prisoner? I made some bad choices when I listened to him. And what he did to you was wrong. And I was wrong to help him. I thought I was helping my country when I did what he and my sister told me to do. But I ended up hurting people who didn’t deserve it.
“And Rayla–she’s great, by the way, taught me how to sweep the leg and everything–she’s helped me understand a lot about myself.. Because she and I, we have a lot in common. Trying to do the best we can for our dads being one of those things, and all.
“So, what I’m trying to say while you’re still deciding if you’re gonna stab me is this: I’m sorry. I’ve been to the Storm Spire, I’ve lived in Lux Aurea, and I, I get it now. The whole war thing. And, who we are inside it. People like you and me. Warriors, fighting to protect people we love. I’ve learned to see more than I ever thought I could. More than my dad wanted me to.
“So… really please don’t stab me, because I’m just trying to do what my king says: we don’t have to fight back. We don’t have to continue the cycle. You killed my last king, and I couldn’t stop you. And, yeah, that still hurts, not gonna lie. But Ezran’s my king now. And I’d follow him to the ends of the earth. If… the earth… has ends. Geometry wasn’t my best class.  Anyway. So how about we talk, you and me, okay, just a couple of badasses, and we’ll try not to fall back on old habits, yeah? Cool. And… how many pushups do you think you can do?”
And Runaan hasn’t said a single word the whole time. He’s just let Soren go on and on and on. But Soren’s been paying attention to Rayla, trying to understand his new ally whenever he can. So he’s been very slowly stepping closer to Runaan, keeping his hands in sight and open, using Rayla’s mannerisms. And that whole message hits Runaan just as hard as hearing Rayla’s name on Soren’s lips. Soren does know Rayla. Knows her well. Things have changed. And he’s going to need to go slow so he doesn’t make a mistake. He’ll never let Soren into his blind spot, but he’ll play along after that show of information. He’ll look Soren up and down and say, “More than you can,” and Soren will grin like a little kid, because he’s just made peace instead of war, and he’s so proud of himself!
Aww, Soren is like hay. He’s great.
Amaya: afawk she hasn’t met Runaan directly, so unless they have some clashy backstory, Amaya’s attitude toward him will be a combination of “This dude killed my brother-in-law/king” and “this dude is my nephew’s girlfriend’s dad”.
By the time Amaya meets Runaan, she’ll know about Rayllum and how strong and steady it’s become. She’ll have Janai by her side. She’ll know about the power of love, and that overt aggression toward Runaan for taking Harrow won’t go over well with Rayla, and maybe not with Callum either. Plus, they’re all trying to move forward in peace, and her relationship with Janai is a big symbol of that. So on one hand, she’s a walking symbol of peace through love. And on the other, she can offer Runaan an olive branch to achieve peace through forgiveness.
A big influence is going to be how well Amaya and Rayla get along. I’d love to see Amaya teaching Rayla ASL because Rayla wants to be able to send silent messages. It’s a very Moonshadow form of communication, and Runaan talks a lot with his hands already, so Rayla’s primed for a new language there, I think. And the more time they spend bonding, the more Amaya’s tolerance will rise.
She may have the hardest time forgiving Runaan, out of everyone. Callum has a huge heart. Ezran is a soft boy through and through. Soren would identify with Rayla pretty strongly, with their dark dads. Gren’s too nice not to feel for Runaan. But Amaya’s whole job has been defending Katolis from elves. And she failed, and her brother-in-law died at Runaan’s hands. So part of her hangup with him will be her own guilt. I’m not sure they’ll ever be friendly.
Callum has more reason to hate Runaan than Amaya, but he’s young and in love with Runaan’s daughter, so he’s got motive and ability to be emotionally flexible. Amaya, for all her love of Janai, might not be quite as flexible toward a Moonshadow assassin whose actions put her nephew on the throne and destabilized Katolis, leaving it vulnerable to a coup and warmongering at Viren’s hands.
So, I think their meeting might go a bit like this: Amaya sees Runaan for the first time after he’s freed. It’s probably not immediately after. He’ll have a chance to find some shirts and eat something, probably heal up as much as he’s going to. And then they’ll come face to face. They’ll warily study each other for a long moment. And then Amaya will shrug and smirk, and Runaan will narrow his eyes, and she’ll punch him as hard as she can, and he’ll let her. Everyone will get caught off guard. Janai and Ethari, if they’re there, will step forward immediately to see to their partners and eye each other warily. But it’ll be Amaya and Runaan who tell them to calm down. Everything just got worked out, as much as it’s ever going to be.
Tumblr media
Unless someone attacks Rayllum. Then I’ll get my cherished hc of Runaan and Amaya fighting back to back. It won’t matter what they’re fighting against. They’ll both be all in. Trusting Rayllum’s other stabby parent would definitely bond them more than anything else ever could.
And now for my sweet boy Gren: Gren is really empathetic, and he knows what Runaan’s last days before the coin were like. Gren had it easy--food, water, light, getting to stand up, not having to endure the odd magical experiment. Runaan wasn’t so lucky. We all saw the level of concern Gren had for his fellow prisoner down the hallway when Runaan started screaming. We saw his horror as he realized what Viren had done and how Runaan was still alive inside that creepy tiny prison coin.
Gren probably didn’t get a very good look at Runaan in the coin, but he’s very good with voices, and he’d recognize Runaan’s in a heartbeat. He could hear everything he and Viren said down the hall. He knew to ask about Xadian fruit, which means he overheard the “Moonshadow elf thing” comment. He knew darn well that Runaan was a Moonshadow--could easily guess that he was one of the assassins--and he was still horrified at his fate. Gren doesn’t carry a weapon--he prefers to talk. And talk and talk and talk. I bet there are plenty of things Gren wouldn’t wish on his worst enemy, and getting coined is one of them now.
So this poor soft dungeon boy, who called down the hall trying to get Runaan to chat and never got an answer, only heard him talking to Viren, what would his reaction be upon seeing Runaan again? Upon hearing him?
Gren would wait for all the “more important” people to speak to Runaan first. Janai, Amaya, Rayla and Callum. And then he’d step forward when Runaan was available and try to have a quick word. He’d stand mirroring Runaan, trying to use Moonshadow body language as best he could. Maybe he picked some of it up from Rayla. And he’d want to speak, but have no real idea what to say.
“Hey. I’m glad you’re okay. What Viren did to you was... wrong. Really wrong. No one should have to go through that, no matter what. I... just wanted you to know that I’m sorry. I... would’ve helped you out... but...” And here Gren gets caught up in his own memories. He’d tried to stay positive in the dungeon, and he could help himself all day long, but he couldn’t help the guy screaming down the hall. Gren’s no pushover, but that whole experience was really hard for him. The walls of that dungeon start to close in around him again.
“You did,” Runaan says. Reluctantly, but not unkindly. He was too busy trying to hunger strike to appreciate Gren’s overtures of friendliness, but once in the coin, Runaan had ages to contemplate every tiny detail of his imprisonment and what led to it. And Gren would be a bafflingly bright spot. No discernible motive. Just a soft, genuine human who tried to cheer Runaan up despite knowing who he was and what he had done.
And that’s all the encouragement Gren needs. He got to be helpful and communicate and do something good, and that’s all he’s ever wanted to do. He’ll glue himself to Runaan’s side for as long as the elf will put up with him, trying to learn as much as he can about Moonshadows. And Runaan will let him, for the most part, because the true measure of a person is how they treat someone who can do nothing for them. And when Runaan could offer Gren absolutely nothing in the dungeon, Gren offered him kindness and consideration. That’s worth a little bit of Moonshadow trust, and Gren will eagerly use what he leans from Runaan to aid in his ability to make peaceful overtures between Xadia and Katolis.
Tumblr media
I think that in general, human reactions to Runaan will be muted by the existence of Rayllum. If Rayla weren’t his daughter, and if Callum weren’t her boyfriend, then I do think some characters would react more angrily to him. But Rayllum is bringing peace and holding it together as the first link, and no one wants to challenge that and cause war again over an enemy combatant who was doing his job by taking out a kingkiller. In the face of Rayllum’s peace and love, Runaan will probably get a bit softer of a landing than he deserves. The humans will get a chance to do what Ezran did: to forgive instead of striking back.

You Are My Shelter
Happy Winter’s Turn, Rori! Here is my finished piece for @tdpholidayexchange. I matched with Rori, who requested some Janai/Amaya goodness. I’ve always wanted to see someone getting to use the Banther Lodge in winter time, so this was a perfect opportunity to let Amaya take Janai to see it.
And I’m so excited to present @random-fandom-ramble‘s bonus art, custom drawn for this fic, as well! Posted with permission. Thanks, friend!
Tumblr media
Happy holidays, Rori! Hope you enjoy!
Title: You Are My Shelter
Series: The Dragon Prince
AO3 Link: Read me!
Pairing: Janaya
Janai stood on the snowy steps of the Banther Lodge and studied the front doors from beneath the golden ruff of fur on her scarlet cloak’s hood. She’d been excited to share Winter’s Turn with Amaya, but she hadn’t expected their first winter holiday to be spent at such a cozy family location. Or that it would be so sun-blightedly cold in Katolis. The snowstorm had been howling for hours, and she’d forgotten what it was like to be able to feel her toes. She’d have used her heat-being to warm up if it wouldn’t have spooked the horse Amaya lent her.
Amaya threw open the front doors, and then she strode back to the steps and took Janai by the hands. Her smile was wide and mischievous, promising soft adventure within, and Janai let herself be pulled inside.
The lodge wasn’t much warmer on the inside than the snowstorm outside, but it was nice not having the wind cut through her cloak anymore, and she shivered in relief. The lodge held a quiet dignity, smelling of leather, books, and the ghosts of desserts past. She took in the high rafters, the thick carpet runners, and the broad staircase leading up to the second floor. And she smiled at the sight of an enormous fireplace on her left. “Do you mind if I—” she began.
Her sentence ended against Amaya’s lips as the shorter woman pulled her down by the edges of her hood for a sudden kiss. Janai’s eyes widened, and she felt Amaya smiling against her lips. She slid her arms around Amaya’s thick cloak and held her close, enjoying her warmth.
Amaya pulled away with a soft smile. She gently lowered Janai’s hood and signed, Welcome to the coziest cabin in Katolis. I’m so glad you’re here.
Janai bit her lip and smiled. “I can tell. Shall I start a fire?”
Amaya nodded eagerly and showed Janai all the fire-starting supplies stacked next to the edge of the massive stone fireplace. Janai pulled off her thick scarlet mittens and began sorting through the pine cones and selecting the kindling, and Amaya trooped in and out of the lodge with armfuls of firewood. Janai finally had to tell her to stop. “I’m building a fire, Amaya, not a miniature replica of your lodge.”
Amaya grinned sassily. I just want you to be warm enough.
Janai pointed a kindling stick at herself. “Amaya, I have a heat-being.”
Amaya’s dark brows flicked upward. That’s not what I meant. You’ll see. Wait here. She pulled off her dark blue gloves and headed across the main hall.
Janai heard porcelain clanking from the kitchen as she finished building her fire base just the way she wanted it: circles of pine cones supporting slender kindling sticks in a rough outline that resembled her palace in Lux Aurea. She picked up another pine cone, held it against her finger, and invoked her heat-being for just a moment.
The pine cone flared with a ribbon of golden flame, and she tucked it in with the others, catching them on fire one by one. By the time Amaya came back carrying a tray with a stoneware pitcher and two mugs, the hearth was blazing with the warmth and light of a wooden Lux Aurea engulfed in flames, and Janai was standing in front of it, holding her bare hands out to its welcome heat.
Amaya set the tray on the red-upholstered couch and took Janai’s hand, turning her until they faced each other. Flickers of gold played over their faces as she undid the lacing on Janais cloak and tossed it onto the back of the couch with a dramatic swirl. She followed it with her own deep teal cloak, and the fabrics draped in soft contrast together.
I want you to try something, Amaya signed. An old family recipe that King Harrow wooed my sister with on cold winter nights. Amaya picked up a sturdy mug of steaming hot cocoa and pressed it into Janai’s hands. Her hands cupped Janai’s, and their eyes met.
Janai’s breath caught at the steady confidence and warm comfort in Amaya’s expression. She’d been so used to leading alone in Lux Aurea, with no real confidants to speak of, that having a true equal who understood her on so many levels still took her breath away. She’d have been proud to simply call Amaya a friend. To have the brave and capable general fall in love with her, too? The bright light of the Summer Solstice was a flickering candle compared to the radiance of Amaya’s smile.
Without even looking into the cup, Janai let Amaya lift her hands until its rim brushed her lips, and she sipped at the hot liquid. Spicy sweetness rolled over Janai’s tongue, and she hummed appreciatively and took a few more gulps.
As they lowered the sweet cup together, Janai closed her eyes in bliss. There was something deliciously familiar about this cocoa. It tasted like her mother’s favorite bedtime-story drink, and Janai’s mind flooded with happy memories. She eagerly added one more: sharing this sweet moment with Amaya, feeling welcomed into her life and embraced by her heart in equal measure.
“I just want you to know,” she said softly, “that you already wooed me before I drank this cocoa. Its spicy sweetness in no way affects my feelings for you. In case you were wondering if human love potions work on Sunfire elves.” Her dark eyes twinkled.
Amaya’s eyes widened. Love potion? she signed dramatically. She grabbed Janai’s hands again and brought the cup to her own lips, draining the rest of the spicy cocoa in a few big gulps. Then she swiped her hand across her mouth and grinned saucily. Well, it’s working on me.
Janai giggled and picked Amaya up off the floor, kissing her enthusiastically. Gradually, she lowered her back down, and their kiss softened, breaking only so they could stand with their foreheads pressed warmly together, holding hands, intertwining their fingers in the embrace of the fire’s warmth.
Amaya tugged on Janai’s hands, and the women sat together on the floor against the couch, ignoring the traditional seating option. Janai cuddled Amaya against her shoulder and draped them both with her scarlet cloak. Its golden fur trim blazed in the firelight, and they shared cup after cup of spicy cocoa. Janai reheated the pitcher on the tray every time it cooled too much, and Amaya played idly with a few of Janai’s braids, booping her on the nose with one of them before smooching the same spot with a soft kiss.
Janai caught one of Amaya’s hands as the merry firelight played across it. She turned up Amaya’s palm and studied it somberly. The burn there had scarred over, and Amaya had healed, but she bore the mark of Janai’s anguish and rage the day her sister Khessa had perished, and she always would.
Amaya sat up and turned Janai’s face toward her with her free hand. It’s not your fault.
“It is. I did this to you.” Janai’s brows bent, and she looked down.
Amaya lifted Janai’s chin with a finger until their eyes met again, and she signed again. No, sweetheart. You felt what you felt. And I did what I had to do to save your life.
“I’m sorry I hurt you, Amaya. You’re so precious to me. I never want to hurt you again.” Janai lifted Amaya’s scarred palm to her lips and pressed a soft, heartfelt kiss there. Finding Amaya—finding her love—had done wonders to heal Janai’s heart. She would take back all Amaya’s pain if she could.
Amaya slid her hand to cup Janai’s cheek. She didn’t need to sign a thing to let Janai know that she was forgiven. Their lips met once again, silhouetted against the fire, and they wrapped each other in warmth, safety, and trust, protected from the storm by the shelter of each other’s love.

Not Nothing - Part 9 - Janaya Fic
x-posted on my AO3 account, link on my main page
Summary:   Amaya finds out who Ori is, and Janai begins to regret introducing them. Meanwhile, the coronation looms closer.
Notes: Oof, busy busy, but I finally managed to get the Ori chapter done! Hopefully the next one will be a bit quicker, but I'm feeling sad about actually trying to wrap this up. Don't worry though, I've got a ton more random Janaya and TDP stuff to write, and I'm feeling like there's going to be a Part 2 to this once I finish this school term.
A big thanks to Nightworldlove for developing Ori with me! (and a shout out to everyone over on the Janaya Nation discord server for all the brainstorming)
No content warnings this time (I don’t think)

Janai leaped off the bed and out of Amaya’s arms before Amaya could figure out what was going on. She shot Gren a confused look.
“Someone in the other room. O-r-i or A-u-r-i maybe?”   He explained with a shrug.
A frown crossed Amaya’s face. By the time Janai opened the door, Amaya had slid off the bed and wandered over to Gren at the desk. Someone that Amaya couldn’t see flung themself through the doorway and pulled Janai into a full-body hug.
“Sister! I have been so worried!”
Amaya blinked when Gren interpreted. Janai had another sibling? The hug made sense then, and Amaya was pleased to see Janai hugging them back just as tightly. When the pair untangled, a shorter elf with a wild puff of orange hair came into view.
“Ori, this is my - “ Janai coughed, and the other elf shot a curious look at her. “This is General Amaya and her interpreter, Commander Gren. They were part of the forces that fought with us at the Storm Spire.  Amaya, Gren, this is my brother Ori.”
Undisguised surprise crossed Ori’s face when he looked at them. “Humans in your bedroom? What would Mother have said?”  Mischief glittered in his gold eyes, and he winked at Amaya.
Janai smacked his upper arm, and he laughed easily. There was a brightness about him like a sunny day, and Amaya liked him instantly. He was around Soren’s age, she guessed, maybe a few years older. Narrow cornrows over the crown of his head held back his orange hair, and a series of gold rings decorated his long ears, ending in gauges in his lobes.
He crossed his wrists in front of his face and offered them a shallow bow. “A pleasure to meet you, General, Commander.”
“Pleased to meet you too, Ori. Just call me Amaya.”  Amaya gave a quick bow from the waist. When she met Ori’s eyes again, she was happy to see no hesitation in his nod.
“A pleasure as well.” Gren offered with a bow of his own. “And Gren is fine.”
Ori surveyed them curiously, but Janai tugged on his arm. “Come sit with me. How did you get here so early? I did not expect you until tomorrow!”
It took a moment for Janai to actually get Ori’s attention because he was studying Amaya with some amusement. He gave her a little shrug and let Janai pull him out of her bedroom and to the couch in the sitting room.
Amaya and Gren followed them out but as much as Amaya would push Janai, she didn’t want to intrude. “Shall we give you some privacy, Your Radiance?”
Janai shot both of them a glare at the formal question and rolled her eyes. “No, stay.” As Ori settled next to her on the couch, the door popped open and Kazi darted through it.
“Your Radiance! Ori is-” Kazi broke off with a blink as Ori laughed. “You beat me here!”
With a grin, Ori bounced off the couch to scoop Kazi up in a hug. Amaya couldn’t help shooting Gren an amused look that he returned. Amaya couldn’t remember any of the Sunfire elves they had met bouncing other than Kazi when they got excited. And only if Janai wasn't in the room.
“I did! I had to make sure Janai was doing okay.” His lips twitched. “Turns out she had company. In her bedroom.” Ori’s mock scandalized face made Amaya laugh, but Kazi blushed hard.
“Oh.” They ducked and suddenly found their shoes fascinating.
Ori’s eyebrow rose, and he smirked. “So there is something going on that I could have walked in on, hmmm?”
Janai cut in, saving Kazi who looked like they might pass out from blushing so hard. “You do not have to answer that, Kazi.” Janai shot Amaya an apologetic glance, but she just grinned.
Kazi sagged in relief and avoided Ori’s knowing look as he dragged them over to the couch. “I didn’t even realize you and Janai were working together!” He seemed excited by the prospect as he looked between his sister and Kazi.
Amaya settled herself in one of the armchairs, and Gren plunked down on a cushion on the floor near her. When Kazi flicked their eyes briefly toward him, he wiggled his fingers in a wave. Amaya’s lips twitched. She was glad they were getting along.
“Oh, she summoned me to help interpret for General Amaya before Commander Gren was in the city,” Kazi explained as if that made Amaya’s presence clear.
“Oh!” Ori's good humor faded as realization crept over his face, and he looked at Amaya again. “You were the human general who was in the city when-”
Janai reached over to squeeze his hand as she interrupted, “She was.” Amaya could tell her voice was quiet. “She kept me from harm and helped me rally our forces.”
Amaya nodded her agreement, her expression softening as she met Ori’s gaze. “I am so sorry for everything that happened.”
The boy swallowed as Gren interpreted, and Ori let Janai pull him into a hug. Kazi rubbed his arm with a concerned look. Something about Ori told Amaya that he had not felt the full force of his grief yet. It was hard when there was no body to grieve, when it happened out of sight, but now he was back in Lux Aurea where he should have had two sisters and there was only one.
Amaya caught Janai’s eye over Ori’s hair and jerked her head toward the door as she lifted her eyebrows in a question. If they needed privacy, Amaya wanted to give it. Janai shook her head and held Amaya’s gaze for a moment with almost a plea in her expression. Of course. She was barely handling her own grief, Amaya knew. Supporting her brother’s on her own might be beyond her right now. Amaya gave her a small nod and sunk into her chair.
Ori rested his head on Janai’s shoulder, and Amaya watched as Janai played gently with his bright curls. His fingers clutched Kazi’s hand, and Kazi leaned against his side, both of their hands clasping his. The way his bright eyes closed for a moment made Amaya want to hug him too, but he drew a deep breath and managed to steady himself.
He plucked at Janai’s dreadlocks and looked up at her. “I still don’t understand why you had a human general in the city, Sister. You explained everything else in your letter.”
Janai bit her bottom lip and flicked her eyes over to Amaya. “General Amaya saved my life at the Breach.” Janai managed to keep her expression mostly steady, but Amaya knew her cheeks had warmed.
“Which she repaid by capturing me!” Amaya shot Janai an impish look. Perhaps she could pull the pair of them away from this direction that neither of them seemed ready to go in. “She thought I was too cute to leave behind. It turned out to be a good thing because then I was here to help.”
Kazi tried to stifle a giggle, and Janai threw a pillow at Amaya with a laugh. “Or something like that.”
Ori blinked at Amaya then turned to stare at Janai, astonishment shining in his eyes. With a shake of his head, he looked at Amaya again. “How did you - And she even threw a pillow at you? I could never get you to have pillow fights with meeeee!”  He laughed and poked Janai in the side. “Is this what my sister looks like in love?
Janai’s eyes went wide, and she smacked Ori’s hand. Even this far away, Amaya could tell that she’d blushed to the tips of her ears, and the little flick they gave confirmed it. When Janai didn’t answer, Ori rolled his eyes and slid off the couch, wandering over to sit on the arm of Amaya’s chair. She tilted her head to look up at him.
“You’ll tell me more if she won’t, right?” He stuck his lower lip out.
Amaya laughed and patted his leg. “Of course! What do you want to know?”
“AMAYA!”
Gren’s over-the-top interpretation of Janai’s yell made Amaya shoot her a cheeky grin. “What?
Ori pouted at Janai and leaned against Amaya’s shoulder. “I just wanted to know how she managed to seduce you! Is that so bad?” Without waiting for Janai to respond, he turned so Amaya could see his lips again. “She hasn’t even dated or had lovers in years ! I’m impressed!”
“Just because I do not tell you about my love life does not mean nothing happens!” Janai’s eyes flashed as she glared at her little brother, and Amaya fought to keep from laughing.
“Oh please! You’ve been wound tighter than a -”
“ORI!”
It took all Kazi and Gren could do to keep up with the siblings for Amaya, both of them trying hard not to laugh.
Amaya gave Ori a smug look. “I’m just that good.”
Janai groaned and buried her face in her hands as Ori clapped. “Oh! I like you! Tell me everything! ”
Janai jumped to her feet before Amaya could answer. “Ori, have you met Amaya’s nephews yet?” Amaya caught Janai’s quick pleading look and nodded as Janai continued, “The elder one is a mage. He is connected to the Sky Arcanum.”
The question broke Ori’s intense focus on Amaya, and his eyes widened as he turned to Janai. “A human? Connected to an arcanum? How?”
Janai laughed. “I think you would have to ask him, and I am sure he would have questions for you.” She glanced at Amaya. “Ori is a mage. He was away studying.”
“Oh! Callum would love to meet you!”  Amaya could hardly wait for Callum to learn about Ori now that she knew. He had been hoping to find a Sunfire mage or two to learn from, and Amaya could see the two of them hitting it off. “He has questions about how Sunfire purification works. Do you want me to introduce you?”
Ori nodded. “Please!”
“And we should also present you to the Dragon Queen and Zym.” Janai broke in.
That made him shiver a little. “Oh, I had not planned on-”
The put-upon sisterly look Janai gave Ori nearly made Amaya laugh. “They are here for the coronation, Ori.”
He sighed, and Amaya patted his arm. “Don’t worry. I’ll protect you.”
It drew a soft laugh from him, and Kazi hopped up from the couch. “I think Callum and the others are actually up in the training ring. It’s about time for Soren’s cake, isn’t it?”
Amaya blinked. “Oops, lost track of time!”   Her wink made Janai blush and Ori chuckle. “Up to the training ring then? We should go before he catches us.”
Ori gave Kazi and Amaya a perplexed look. “Who’s Soren?”
“He is one of King Ezran’s crownguards.” Kazi supplied as they tugged on Ori. “I’ll tell you about everyone.” The two of them headed out the door toward the stairs.
Before she and Gren could leave too, Janai caught Amaya’s arm. “Please do not give him more details. This is bad enough.” Worry creased Janai’s forehead. “He is relentless sometimes.”
Amaya let Kazi and Ori get ahead of them while Gren hung back to interpret for her. With a soft smile, Amaya lifted the elf’s fingers to her lips before explaining. “I thought it would be easier for you if he focused on that instead of the heavier stuff. At least until the coronation is over.” Amaya let the concern she had been covering from Ori show in her eyes. “I can stop if you want.”
Janai stared at her, the mild irritation in her expression melting away. She ducked, and Amaya could feel the warmth on her cheeks. “Oh.” A smile crossed the elf’s lips, and she leaned into Amaya. “Thank you.”
Amaya stole a quick kiss, and Janai took a moment to rest on her. They both took a deep low breath together as Amaya stroked her side before she pulled back to sign. “Are there any other siblings I should know about?”
Janai laughed and shook her head. “No, just Ori. I meant to tell you, but everything was so-”
“I know. We’re still getting to know each other’s people.” Amaya couldn’t help chuckling. “At least you’re getting okay about kissing in front of Gren.”
“I am, but I still need to work on it it.” Janai’s eyes danced and darted toward Gren. He laughed, and Amaya lifted an eyebrow at Janai. After looking between them, Janai quickly bent forward and claimed a playful kiss from Amaya.
Amaya giggled against Janai’s mouth and slid her arm around the elf’s waist. She was more than happy to help Janai get used to kissing while Gren was around. The instant she started to stiffen though Amaya broke the kiss and looked up.
Ori was in the doorway with Kazi coming up behind him, trying to grab at his arm. Amaya missed whatever he had said, but Gren quickly supplied it. “Ohhh! So that’s what kept you!”
Through her hand on Janai’s waist, Amaya could feel the woman’s frustration building. Amaya twisted, turning her back to the door to shield her sign from Kazi. Gren would know better than to interpret. “Trust me?”
Confusion crossed Janai’s face, but she nodded. Before Ori could break in again, Amaya dipped Janai and gave her a sharp hungry look that she hoped the elf would understand. The only way to make a younger sibling like Ori back off was to neutralize his teasing. Even with uncertainty still in her eyes, Janai took the suggestion and grabbed Amaya’s hair, pulling her into a hard kiss. Amaya felt a growl vibrating from Janai, but it suddenly turned into a giggle against her lips.
With a laugh, Amaya broke the kiss and looked over her shoulder. Ori’s hand covered his eyes and he wore a pained grimace. Both Gren and Kazi were giggling uncontrollably.
Amaya shot Janai a triumphant grin as she pulled her up. Janai lifted an eyebrow at Ori. “What? I thought you wanted to catch me kissing Amaya.”
“Not like that!” He protested with a glare that looked remarkably like Janai’s.
Amaya smirked as she looked between them. “Like what then? I’m happy to take requests.”
Janai choked on a laugh and buried her face in Amaya’s hair as Amaya gave Ori a smug look. He wagged a finger at them, sputtered, then turned to leave, waving for them to follow him. Kazi’s lips twisted as they tried to tamp down their giggles.
Amaya lifted her chin and gave Janai a sharp grin. “Victory!”
Kazi covered their mouth and Gren snorted. Janai waved off their interpretations as she laughed. “I know that sign!”
Ori shot them all another glare but was laughing by the time they all made their way up the stairs. Introductions and birthday cake and coronation preparations took up the rest of the day, and by bedtime, Amaya was exhausted and fell asleep curled around Janai in her bed.
A chill creeping over her chest woke Amaya a few hours later, and she blinked her eyes open. The room was dark. More importantly, Janai was not pressed up against her chest or even in the bed. Groggily, she lifted her eyes to search the room and found the elf staring out the window, framed by moonlight.
The slump of her shoulders made Amaya frown. She untangled herself from the blankets and slid off the bed. When her fingers brushed Janai’s waist, the woman startled then glanced back at her. The moonlight caught a few tears on Janai’s cheeks, and the elf tried to flick them away as if that would stop Amaya from noticing them.
“I did not mean to wake you.” Even with the protest, Janai found Amaya’s hand and pulled her arm tight around her waist.
Amaya shook her head and slid her other arm around Janai too. When she pressed her chest against Janai’s back, the elf sunk against her and folded her arms over Amaya’s, her fingers trailing over Amaya’s arms. They rested there for a few moments before Amaya nuzzled Janai’s neck. When Janai tipped her head to the side, Amaya couldn’t resist pressing a lingering kiss under her ear.
Ori’s comment about Janai being in love still played in Amaya’s mind, even if it had been mostly to needle his sister. So far Janai had managed to hide her lips from view when she’d whispered those words, but at least a few times, her mouth had been against Amaya’s skin so Amaya knew that Ori was not wrong. The way Janai shivered against her and the way she relaxed into Amaya’s hold spoke as much as anything about Janai’s trust in her.
It was not Janai’s feelings that Amaya found herself questioning though as she drew Janai back over to the bed. They climbed into the bed together, but before Amaya could ask her if she wanted to talk about her worries, Janai buried her face in Amaya’s chest. Amaya swallowed and wrapped her arms around Janai’s shoulders.
Janai’s fingers gripped the back of Amaya’s loose shirt, and Amaya felt another shudder of emotions roll through Janai’s body. She curled tighter around the woman. There was nothing she could do to lift the weight that was crashing down on Janai, no way she could shield her from the grief and responsibilities.
All she could do was keep her breathing steady for Janai and try to knead away some of the tension in her back. And remind her she was not alone. Apparently it was something though because as Amaya worked her fingers down Janai’s spine, she felt Janai’s trembling start to ease.
The fact that Janai let herself melt into Amaya stirred something in Amaya’s chest, and she curled tighter around the elf. Janai’s breathing slowly evened out, and with each stroke of Amaya’s hand down her back, Amaya could feel her going limp. It was such a strange thing, how easily Janai found comfort in her, and just how much Amaya wanted to give that comfort.
Amaya let her head drop down on the pillow and shifted so Janai could rest more comfortably against her, but Amaya did not sleep. Instead, she glided her hands over Janai’s back to keep her body relaxed. Janai would not be alone if she woke again. Not tonight.

End note:
I actually did a little drabble for Soren's birthday, and then I ended up expanding on it for Janaya week, so if you want to read it, here it is.
