Papamin Propaganda - Armin's natural affinity for children

This is nowhere near as lucid or detailed as I wanted it to be, but I've managed to throw a few points together, so have it anyway.

There are quite a few characters in AoT who have shown remarkable compassion and empathy toward children, notably, Levi, Reiner, Jean, Hange, and so on. In this post we'll talk about Armin.

Episode 72 (S04E13) is titled "Children of the Forest" and I think it's quite self-explanatory at this point - as Sasha's father put it, the children of this ruined world have been roaming around in a forest of endless violence, unable to find a way out of it. By the end of AoT, the characters who are presently "children" (i.e, Gabi, Falco, Kaya, and so on) do end up exiting this 2000 year old forest, toward a new world of harmonious co-existence. What I love particularly about the episode titling sequence however, is that Episode 71 (S04E12) is called "Guides" - and it deals mostly with the people who will act as the literal "guides" to the "Children in the Forest". This is of course, Hange & the surviving members of the 104th, and therefore also, Armin.

(In a previous post I've talked at some length about why I consider Armin to be *THE* guide out of the forest, for not only children, but humanity as a whole; so we will not go into that here. Instead we'll stick to why Armin has a natural affinity and flair for handling children specifically.)

It's important to remember that Armin was a bullied child, one at the receiving end of a never-ending stream of insults, kicks, and violence. Despite being abandoned by his parents and eventually also losing his grandfather, Armin never lost his kindness and gentle persona. This, at an age when children are heavily influenced by their surroundings and what they witness through the behaviors of other people, *can* be a bit surprising. It is a known fact that bullies are born due to (among other things) a variety of self-esteem issues and jealousy. I would say Armin retained this softness because in spite of being orphaned, & considered the 'weakest' among the 104th, he always received love from those around him (the fact that he couldn't see this love and value placed in him is a different thing entirely), and was treated with kindness too (ah the days before Floch came along with his insults were peaceful #_#)

Moving on to the aforementioned episodes in particular: It is Sasha's father who introduces the concept of the forest, we know Hange cries "Genocide isn't right!" twice (and thereby making it clear that she is the most senior "guide" in all of the bunch), but it is Armin who is the first to put to literal action the meaning and role of being a guide that brings children out of the forest.

Between episode 71, 72, 81 (S04 P2 E06), 82 (... E07) & 83 (... E08), the events taking place are very tightly packed together. Everything from the first reveal of Eren's Jaegerist faction to the beginning of the Rumbling takes place. It is a period when the military is in shambles, Eren has pushed his friends away and become that giant bony monster, Falco's been taken hostage, Hange's hiding away taking care of Levi, and the rest of our characters are dispersed across various locations, stumped and paralyzed with fear and hesitation about what to do about the world getting trampled outside. It is a period of intense confusion, and there is no unity between anybody. The Alliance hasn't been born.

In this duration of time, we see the following:

1. Armin helping a battered and bloody Gabi get up in Niccolo's restaurant and helping her walk to the next room, away from the arguing adults.

2. Telling her in no uncertain terms that she's not going to be killed out of vengeance. It's important to note this because while Gabi's already received the kindness of other people by this point (Sasha's family), she soon comes to know that Armin is Eren's best friend, i.e the Devil's best friend, and yet, he's still kind to her.

3. He meets up with Gabi, and tells her honestly what's happened. Now this is a favorite scene of mine, but you'll notice that when Gabi falls to her knees, everyone's standing around towering over her, but in the end, Armin kneels to her level, holding her gently by the shoulders. Body language is a powerful tool to convey a person's emotions and intent; he does ask her about what she saw when the walls fell, but he still does it gently, and at her level of height where she doesn't have to crane her neck up to look at someone 'commanding' her. It's a humane action, gentle and kind, an indirect way of saying "I'm listening, you can trust me, so don't be afraid." It's also pertinent to note that of all the people around Gabi in that moment, Armin's the most approachable. Mikasa's withdrawn, in a turmoil of her own. Sasha's family is clueless. Connie kidnapped Falco, not a good image. Jean's rough, prone to losing his temper. Hange & Levi nowhere to be seen. But Armin? He was kind to her at the restaurant, and continues to be so, retaining his softness both in manner and speech, with her.

4. With Mikasa immediately after (the outburst scene), we see him say many things; that the line of command has broken down completely, that they need Gabi's trust if they have to do something by forming a team with the Cart & Jaw titans. Remember: Hange & Levi are missing, two of the closest superiors the kids know to look for guidance; and yet he alone makes the difficult decision of going after Falco. This move of his does three things: (a) It wins Gabi's trust in full, (b) Tells Gabi (and also to us as the readers) that he doesn't agree with Eren's actions, (c) Lays the very foundation for the Alliance before anybody's even told him to.

5. With Falco's scene, things are once again, self-explanatory - but I like one specific detail. We see the others trying to catch some shut-eye (Mikasa, Jean, Annie, Hitch, etc). Earlier with Mikasa, Armin had expressed his wish to just sleep for two days straight. And yet it's HIM who rides with Gabi all through the night non-stop to get Falco back, trying to catch up to Connie who's had a head-start, waaayy before them. This little detail, imo, shows his dedication and drive for what he believes in, as well as strong empathy and understanding for these hurting children, who don't know any better. (I don't know if Gabi knows he's the holder of the Collosal titan atp... I think she knows? If yes, it would show how much she already trusts him, going with him alone. Now tell me that isn't because of the compassion and empathy he's shown toward her.)

It's obvious that all of the 104th understand where children like Gabi come from - brainwashed and rabid as they are. But in choosing to show Armin as the one who takes the first step in bringing the Alliance together, through the heart and mind of a child, I find myself believing - this man's going to be a GREAT dad.

CW: SPOILERS FOR CLAYMORE MANGA (ch. 82) AND ATTACK ON TITAN

So uhhhh I just reached the part where Miria gives her explanation of what she found by researching and...

Apparently the continent where they live is not the only continent in the world. There is another one that is embroiled in a huge continental war between two factions, one of which decided to experiment with creating creatures to get the upper hand over the other warring faction. And thus they use the main continent we know as some sort of testing ground...

Sounds familiar? It's literally THE plot twist we get in Attack on Titan after the Shiganshina battle. My first instinct was to say "damn did Claymore just rip it off?"

Then I checked the publishing dates. AoT started to get published in September 2009. According to this Claymore hiatus chart, the chapters of the Battle of Rabona arc (73-82) were published between late 2007 and late 2008.

So yeah. Even assuming Isayama had EVERYTHING planned from the beginning (which I think he did because of the huge amount of foreshadowing)...it's still Claymore that did the "actually you live in a island full of evil creatures sent by the guys on the other continent who are warmongers yadda yadda" twist before AoT did.

Don't get me wrong. I still love AoT and I honestly think it did the twist better. Throughout the manga/anime the question of "what's beyond the walls?" is constantly made and teased. In Claymore, until Miria's explanation I didn't even consider the posibility of there being more continents because I didn't really care. I haven't finished Claymore so I'll hold on before making any more judgements. And just to be clear, I'm not calling Isayama a plagiarizer.

This honestly just makes me angry about the fact Claymore only got one single season that had a terrible anime original ending. It really makes me wonder where Claymore would be had it been given more opportunity.

L'attacco dei giganti - Ep 82 - Tramonto

Uff, la testa gira, e finora non era successo, il che è tutto dire. Sì, perchè è facile seguire il main event, Eren che risveglia tutti i giganti e marcia verso il resto del mondo, okay capito. Ma tu pensa che significa seguire ed assimilare gli strascichi di questa cosa, e come il boato influenza la situazione, in ogni suo punto e con gli occhi di ogni personaggio.

Ma andiamo con ordine, siamo credo all'interno delle ex mura centrali, pace all'anima loro, il Wall Sina. E lo capiamo perchè c'è Hitch che si sta occupando di alcuni feriti rimasti sotto le macerie delle mura crollate. Eh sì, perchè tre mura colossali che crollano fanno morti e feriti, mica ci avevamo pensato. Ed infatti qualcuno dice proprio questo, che Eren può anche avere buone intenzioni, ma intanto ammazzato parecchia gente di Paradis. A chi dice questo ci sono altri simp di Eren che invece controbattono che dei sacrifici per ridare all'impero di Eldia la sua gloria sono necessari, e tutti insieme si mettono a urlare Offrite i vostri cuori! come se non ci fosse un domani. Erwin intanto, dalla sua tomba, si sta rivoltando talmente velocemente che se ci attacchi un cavo ti illumina un distretto intero. Non è cambiato niente, la popolazione, o una buona parte di essa, è ancora convinta che il genocidio sia una graziosa e salutare pratica. Beh finchè non sono loro quelli ammazzati male, ovvio. Hitch, che sarà anche un pochetto spocchiosa, ma non certo stupida, indica agli altri di preparare le armi anti sommossa, che a questi invasati magari gli pigliano i 5 minuti e si mettono a picchiare soldati. Ma mentre gira per il quartier generale vede che qualcuno si è fatto la doccia e se n'è andato in giro senza asciugarsi, tanto che ci sono tracce d'acqua per terra. Le tracce la portano in una stanza, e qui le tappa la bocca una cosetta bionda e col naso storto. Ah Annie sei tu, non t'avevo riconosciuto, sei dimagrita di tipo 32 chili dall'ultima volta che ti ho vista. Ma Hitch non ha scelta perchè anche se debole Annie potrebbe decidere di trasformarsi ed aggiungere altri morti al conto attuale già alto. Annie è il gigante di Shroedinger, finchè non si trasforma, non sai se lo farà.

Ma dopotutto Annie vuole solo essere portata verso il continente, verso il porto, così potrà tornare a Marley, quindi ad Hitch, e a tutti quelli che morirebbero in caso di trasformazione in gigante, conviene assecondare il suo desiderio. Intanto scopriamo che Annie in questi anni anche se imbozzolata ha sentito la voce di Hitch e di Armin, quindi si è comunque tenuta informata, e scopriamo anche la sua storia, e cioè che, abbandonata da piccola perchè eldiana, è stata tirata su ed addestrata ad uccidere e picchiare male da un altro eldiano, che ecco non sempre ha usato metodi adeguati. Diciamo che fra il bastone e la carota lui con Annie ha sempre usato il bastone, la carota risulta dispersa. Questo perchè se Annie fosse diventata una guerriera ed una marleyana onoraria, lui avrebbe potuto vivere una vita migliore. Che gentiluomo. Ma quando Annie stava per partire per Paradis al simpaticone sono venuti gli scrupoli e le ha chiesto di tornare sana e salva e le ha anche detto che si pentiva di averla trattata come l'ha trattata. Tutto bello, ma io faccio fatica a perdonare un tizio che cresce una persona a suon di botte solo perchè si è fatto un bel pianto. Più che altro si apprezza il cambiamento, posso solo dire questo. Ma Annie, che in fondo in fondo in fondo ma proprio in fondo il cuoricino ce l'ha, s'è affezionata al tizio e lo vede come suo padre, per cui adesso vuole solo tornare da lui e chiudere con giganti, eldiani, marleyani ecc. Quanto è fatta loquace Annie, cambiata totalmente. Intanto a Marley gli eldiani stanno tentando di convincere i marleyani che hanno sentito Eren Yaeger dire loro che sta arrivando con tipo tutti i giganti colossali esistenti e che spazzerà via tutti. Ma figurati se i soldati credono a questa cosa, facevate prima a dire che il cane vi ha mangiato i compiti o che l'ennesima nonna è morta se volevate una scusa credibile. Il padre di Annie, centralissimo in questo episodio, tenta ancora di convincere i soldati, ma si sente uno sparo, chissà se ci ha lasciato le penne? Speriamo di no, povera Annie.

La situazione non è bella nemmeno a Shiganshina, dove gli Yaegeristi si stanno radunando e presto toglieranno di mezzo chi non la pensa come loro. Anche i sottoposti di Shadis, che hanno cambiato fazione così tante volte che sono confusi pure loro, chiedono al comandante cosa fare, e qui sono d'accordo col pelato che gli dice di rimanere bassi e di obbedire agli yaegeristi, in attesa di poter contrattaccare, dato che morire non servirebbe a nulla. Ci spostiamo in un'altra stanza, Armin si sta preparando per andare a recuperare Connie e convincerlo a non ritrasformare sua madre usando Falco. Credici. Come già detto si apprezza l'impegno. Ma ora come ora, con tutto quello che sta succedendo, l'unico modo per non impazzire è concentrarsi sulle piccole cose. E lo sa Armin, che ci sarebbe davvero da impazzire, la gente morta in giro, il mondo che sta per essere distrutto, Reiner e il gigante carro di cui devono ottenere la fiducia per non creare altro odio, motivo per cui devono recuperare Falco, Historia che sarà in pericolo pure lei, Annie che si è scongelata e chissà dove si trova in questo momento, Hange e Levi che potrebbero essere morti, Floch e gli yaegeristi che se si annoiano troppo potrebbero ucciderli tutti...Mi sento confusa io che non c'entro niente. Mikasa è quella che è, non gliene frega una mazza di ste cose, lei chiede solo cosa possono fare con Eren. E qui tutti noi siamo Armin quando per le staffe e dice che con tutto quello che sta succedendo onestamente non gliene importa un fico secco di Eren. Come dargli torto. Ma non ha ragione quando dice che Erwin la situazione l'avrebbe saputa controllare, adesso hanno la conferma che non era Armin a dover essere resuscitato. Aww Armin no, non è vero, anche Erwin davanti a questa situazione avrebbe lanciato qualche sedia, e poi è stato Erwin stesso a spostare il braccio quando Levi ha provato a fargli l'iniezione, nessuno se lo ricorda? Quindi Armin zitto e vai da Connie.

Il tempo di Gabi e Kaya che sono diventate pappa e ciccia che si salutano e andiamo da Floch, che deve morire male, il quale ha capito le maniere da adottare per convincere i Volontari a passare dalla loro parte, e non sono le buone maniere. Floch dice che Eren era venuto da lui e gli aveva raccontato il suo piano, quindi mentre si occuperà di distruggere tutti quelli fuori da Paradis, lui appianerà le controversie all'interno. Ssssì Floch, ti crediamo (non è vero non gli crediamo ma facciamolo contento). Poi dopo aver ammazzato uno dei volontari perchè continuava a sputare nella sua direzione va da Jean, lì vicino ad un passo dallo svenire per lo schifo al quale sta assistendo, e gli dice che ce l'abbiamo fatta, abbiamo trovato la libertà ed abbiamo riportato Eldia al potere. Mh-mh, ancora una volta Floch, ti crediamo (non è vero). Connie intanto galoppa verso l'orizzonte con Falco in sella, e gli è venuto conveniente che il ragazzino abbia perso la memoria a breve termine, perchè gli ha detto che lo sta portando in un ospedale per aiutarlo con la memoria. Falco è tranquillo, perchè Connie è una brava persona. Ssssì Falco. Ultima scena che risolleva i cuori di molti (me compresa ma lo sapevo perchè ho letto il manga), Pieck (ciau Pieck!) e Magath si sono intanto rintanati nella foresta nei dintorni di Shiganshina, ad osservare i dirigibili marleyani che se la stanno battendo con la coda fra le gambe, quando arriva a chieder loro aiuto una soldatessa con la benda sull'occhio che ha attaccata al cavallo una branda, e su di essa l'uomo più affascinante del mondo, che si rifiuta di voler morire. Levi. L'episodio adesso acquista senso, anche se è finito, ma ci accontentiamo, l'importante è saper che il capitano è vivo. Finchè lui è vivo la situazione non precipita. Daje. La testa gira ancora, come detto all'inizio una cosa è il main event, che è lineare, ed infatti Eren non l'abbiamo più visto da due episodi, ma più difficile è seguire tutte le sottotrame secondarie, che in un'opera come L'Attacco dei giganti sono d'obbligo e non sono mai mancate, nemmeno in tempi più sereni. Fanno parte dell'opera, non sono accessorie o superflue, ma indispensabili per la comprensione complessiva della storia e dei personaggi. Non capisco chi critica questa storia davvero a cosa si appigli, mbah. Ma torniamo a noi. Aspettiamo quindi il prossimo episodio, per capire come si evolvono le cose, con i giganti colossali ancora a fare da cornice. A presto! -sand-
