i spend too much time focusing on shit i don’t think anyone else notices or cares about, lmao. some examples:

a huge part of why redamancy took so long to post was because i spent actual weeks trying to find a word for the title. went through so many different sources and languages because nothing fit the exact sentiment i wanted.

with aphelion, i spent hours looking up comets (not meteors) that would have been visible in seoul and what date(s) that would have been, researching paintings, etc. the fic is planned to the minute, which is…. so unnecessary.

for the lee know drabble, i had an actual map up to pick locations that the goose chase goes down.

and lastly, for the namjoon “anywhere” drabble, i literally planned a 30-day european trip and what transportation would be best to get from city to city and how long to stay in each place, lol.

i think i’m insane???

🤗: what advice would you give to new fanfic writers that are just getting started?

don’t let the prospect of notes dictate your decisions. people are going to latch onto stuff you won’t expect them to, and it will be some thing you tossed together — not necessarily what you’re proudest of — so just write what you want, the way you want to write it.

i do indeed write the spicy stuffs. most popular is definitely darksided, which is still wild to me because i thought of it and posted it within two hours. no thoughts, just horny, right when i started this blog. it brought a lot of people here, which was both entirely unexpected and really fucking cool.

i don’t even know, lol. i started doing creative writing when i was elementary school and then started fanfic when i was 11-12? so, a love of writing for sure and then being a simp, i suppose!

i’d never used a beta reader until i started aphelion and had to cry out to @here2bbtstrash and @jihopesjoint! i am way too close to that story so i had to recruit friends to tell me if i was being insane.

after opening my aphelion file for like 10 minutes i already figured out and moved past the part i had been stuck on for forever. it turns out!! that sometimes you really just have to be okay with telling instead of showing. my attempt to show everything just overcomplicated the narration so much that it became stagnant and convoluted. tell! please tell!! “show don’t tell” isn’t meant to be a strict rule!! TELL!!!!!!!!!!!

25.) best scene you havent yet written, but have an idea for?

THE ENDING SCENE OH MY GOD. Well there's an epilogue too but the ending scene of the main story. Obviously I'm not going to detail that here (maybe in dms if ur curious tho) but ohhhh my god. Screaming crying etc etc etc. I've written a draft of it before but also the Big Reveal (tm) of the first part which I believe you are already familiar with.... but that is also huge spoilers for the public. Um. Trying to think of something I can actually say aksdghkfjdghfdkl almost all my favorite big moments are Reveals Of Some Sort... ok actually I think that one of my favorite scenes (in one of my favorite chapters in the first part) is after Meridian initially struggles to convince this young monk that I'm Really Aphelion Dude I Swear,, at the end they're like "trust me ;)" and the guy has finally given in even though "Aphelion" isn't who he expected at all. As the gang leaves the monk (he has a name idk if it's permanent tho so not gonna say it yet) is just kinda standing there watching. And as the chapter closes on him you kinda get the sense that like. This whole series of interactions has just shaken this incredibly devout guy's faith to the core. Surely This Will Not Have Consequences Later.

13.) how long have you been working on this project? what has changed from the outset?

The thing about this project (and really all of my projects) is that at it's current point, it's completely unrecognizable from what it was at the beginning. Hard to even say what the beginning even is, because a lot of the time I don't really scrap projects?? They just continue to evolve until sometimes they evolve so much that it's just, like, a different thing entirely. But I would say when asa started to be kind of recognizable as itself was around 2016? The characters and world and plot have all changed a lot, but you can still see the same framework underneath imo. One significant thing I think is that the main character has shuffled around. At the veeeery beginning it was Vita, then it was Ivrel, then it was Meridian (who, to be fair, has been the main character since like 2017).

10.) if your story is titled, why did you choose that title?

Sun symbolism is big here,,, but also there is no sun, at least not right now. Kind of a big deal that it's gone. "Arc" is good alliteration, but also sorta refers to the idea within the story that time is circular and all things are connected in a way even though the connection is often meaningless (if that makes any sense). But it's also a thing in storytelling, or, like, a shape that islands can be in lol. I think it works

Long-period comet C/2023 H2 (Lemmon) was discovered on April 23, 2023, as part of a star survey conducted with the 1.5-meter telescope at Mount Lemmon Observatory. The comet has an elongated orbit with an eccentricity close to unity. At perihelion it approaches the Sun at a distance of 0.89 AU. e., at aphelion it moves away from it at a distance of 490.7 a. e. With the size of the semi-major axis of the orbit 245.8 a. That is, the comet's orbital period around the Sun is about 3850 years. The last perihelion passage took place on October 29, 2023. After comet C/2023 H2 (Lemmon) passes perihelion on the night of November 10-11 universal time, it will approach the Earth at a distance of about 29 million km. At this moment, the comet will be in the constellation Hercules, which will be located quite high above the horizon in the western part of the night sky.

Also idk if you’re familiar with manischewitz but it’s less “wine” and more “liquid grape jelly that gets you toasted” 😅 but I did enjoy it very much so thank you.

To answer your question, I think the story I’m most excited to continue writing - aside from Aphelion - is Survivor Blues. I feel like most of the first few chapters of that have been set up and backstory, and I’m excited to get to the meatier parts (because they’re meteorrrrrrr) of the story. There is a scene in part six that I’ve had written for about a year (!!!) which I have been very excited to finally include, and I’m looking forward to writing more of Joel and Reader getting to know one another. The spring and summer months of this story are going to be fun (for the most part) and I’m very ready to get these characters out of their winter coats and thick sweaters.

I’ve also been thinking about Ezra & Din A LOT lately, and I recently found some snippets of things I’d written for both of them that have sparked some things, so don’t be surprised if the spacemen show up soon!

HFL 10th Anniversary Party Update!

HFL 10th Anniversary Party Update!

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to do a quick update to firstly say a huge thanks to everyone who has been in touch to say they would like to attend our 10th Anniversary bash this coming Saturday, the 5th November, it is quite humbling really, we have had well over 100 people get in touch to say they would like to help us celebrate on the day + loads of congratulatory messages which is quite incredible so again a massive thank you, it is certainly going to be a lot of fun and we have airlifted in extra cake to make sure we have enough to go round.

I see the day as a bit like a big kitchen party where it will be great to catch up with everyone where we just happen to have some awesome systems playing, my only concern is parking for everyone but we will open the gates to hard standing by the barns nearby to give extra parking so I am sure it will be fine, I mean what could possibly go wrong 😬

As for the systems we will have running, I thought it would be a good idea to highlight what will be present, again the idea of the day is to celebrate with the brands that we started with in 2012 so please see below –

Upstairs Demo Room – REGA!

The upstairs demo room is basically the room that helped us build HFL to what it is today as it was our main demo room back in 2012 and still is today really, many of you will be familiar with this room, we were so lucky as it has always been a great sounding room with no treatment needed and is a nice size, in here Rega will be playing their Osiris Reference amp with the awesome Aura phono stage and Planar 10 with an Aphelion 2 cartridge matched up with a pair of PMC fact.8 speakers and REL S/510 Sub so I just know this room will sound great and be very popular, Rob from Rega will be here helping run the room and to answer any questions you may have.

First downstairs Room

This is now my office but we will be re-jigging it to have Chris selling his vinyl + we have Bradley and Julie coming along from HiFi Racks and Martin form Atlas Cables so if you have any questions for these guys you will find them here.

First Downstairs Listening Room – The Naim Room.

So no guess for what we will be having in here, yep a full Naim 500 system with the brilliant Solstice turntable hooked up also and all connected to a pair of big Spendor Classic 200 speakers so this room will be really singing, we will have Mark and Darren here from Naim to answer any questions you may have.

2nd Listening Room – The PMC / Bryston Room!

This is a room that is close to my heart as it was thanks to this combo that inspired Wendy and Myself to start a HiFi Shop as it was what we had at home before HFL and it gave us so much enjoyment we just wanted to spread the word, so in here we will be running the Bryston BR20 streaming Preamp into a pair of Bryston 7B3 mono blocks into the mighty PMC Fenestria Speakers, Peter Thomas, PMC owner, founder and all round top bloke will be around through the day as well as Paul from PMC to help run the room and answer any questions.

Headphone Room 

Headphones have been a big part of our journey through the 10 years so our new headphone room will be running a full dCS Lina stack into a pair of the new 2022 Focal Utopia headphones and also into the Stax SR-X9000 / T8000 combo, this is 2 of the best headphones on the planet so will be well worth a listen.

So we need to have our latest showroom up and running so Jono will be in here so if you fancy a go at being a racing driver or have any sim questions he will be your guy.

Normally we do quite a spread but due to the numbers involved we are just going to go big on cake, biscuits and drinks which is making me hungry just thinking about it, hopefully if the weather behaves itself we can put that all outside to give us more space for all the other fun stuff.

what do you think about cass climbs the tower AUs like untangled?

um broadly speaking i think rewrites are one of the hardest fanfic genres to do well, because by nature of being rewrites they need to hew much closer to canon than, say, a canon divergent au would. the difference is like--canon divergent aus begin with canon and branch away, often ending up in wildly different places, whereas rewrite aus are more like (haha) a strangler fig in that they take twists and turns and contortions around canon instead of away from it and by the end you should have something that retains the approximate shape of the original but is a different species altogether.

so good rewrite aus are like--on the one hand they have to change a lot, because otherwise it's going to read as a novelization at best or a bland rehash at worst, but on the other hand they also can't change too much, because by nature of being rewrites they need to resemble the canon story from beginning to end.

[sidebar: i get a kick out of people asking me if X plot point from canon will or won't happen in bitter snow, because... yes? the answer is always yes. they will go through the great tree, cass will get hurt, tromus will trap them in the shell house, eugene will discover that he was aphelion's crown prince before the collapse, new dream will meet demanitus in the labyrinth, cassandra will take the moonstone and run, zhan tiri will escape her prison, there will be an eclipse, there will be a reconciliation. the only plot point i'm cutting out is the mind trap because it's fucking stupid, and that is getting replaced with the at least aesthetically similar varian sállvatt arc which is starting to get underway, er, now. the differences lie in how we get there, and in the extra stuff that comes from bitter snow having a dramatically larger cast and wider scope than the canon story did.

and this isn't a dig at folks who ask these questions or even just wonder about them; the reason i get a kick out of it is i think the mark of a successful rewrite au is being able to exactly follow the basic plot of the canon story but do it in a way that leaves readers wondering what's going to happen next so when people ask it's like... yeah of course that'll happen because this is a rewrite, but clearly i've done a good job because even though you know it's a rewrite you still don't know what's coming, and you're speculating and anticipating and invested in what's coming. this is what appeals to me as a reader when i'm reading rewrite aus so i'm always really happy as a writer to get feedback along these lines.]

ANYWAY. CASS-CLIMBS-THE-TOWER AUS. these can be canon divergent aus but the ones i've seen are all pretty firmly in the rewrite category, in that the basic trajectory of the story is still:

1. rapunzel dreams of seeing the "floating lights" 2. a stranger finds her tower by chance and climbs into it 3. rapunzel strong-arms them into escorting her to the festival 4. adventure ensues! 5. rapunzel and her new friend begin to fall in love 6. gothel interferes 7. rapunzel is brought back to the tower or otherwise endangered 8. discovery of rapunzel's true identity 9. the friend tries to save rapunzel and is gravely injured or killed 10. gothel is defeated and rapunzel revives her friend 11. return to corona, where rapunzel is welcomed as the lost princess.

slot cassandra into the role of the stranger-turned-friend and make adjustments as needed based on how cass acts in this role versus flynn/eugene and if we're feeling spicy and canon compliant add in an arc about cassandra figuring out that gothel is her mother and/or tap series-original characters into the adventure ensues! part of the plot, and you've got yourself a cass-climbs-the-tower tangled rewrite au. the quality and entertainment value of these kind of fics varies a lot depending primarily on how skilled the author is at the changing-a-lot-without-changing-too-much thing. out of the ones i've read untangled is definitely the most successful in this regard.

miscellaneous other thoughts:

- there is a venn diagram of people who take the stance of "it's weird and kind of uncomfortable that rapunzel falls in love with and marries the first man she ever meets" and people who like cass-climbs-the-tower endgame cassunzel tangled rewrites, and i think the people who exist in the middle of this diagram are really funny

- what i would really love to see is a really well-done cass-climbs-the-tower tangled rewrite as a foundation for a canon divergent tts au that took the basic tts premise of black rocks, moonstone, zhan tiri and explored how that would unfold in this version of the story, because there's a decent handful of cass-climbs-the-tower tangled rewrites and a lot of canon divergent and rewrite aus of tts but i don't...think? or at least i haven't found any fics that do both.

- relatedly i'd like to see a cass-climbs-the-tower canon divergent tangled/tts au where rapunzel just... doesn't return to corona at the end. either doesn't learn that she's a princess at all, or decides she wants to see the world more than she wants to be reunited with parents she doesn't even remember except for a blurry impression of their faces, and so she and cass leave corona instead to have adventures until the black rocks become a problem and adira catches up with them.

- there's a bitter snow cass-climbs-the-tower au floating around in my head where the point of divergence is that sir peter doesn't find casāndra when her parents are arrested, so she grows up in sirin's care and it's basically: your lost princess has been rescued but [a finger of the monkey's paw curls back] her rescuer is a saporian separatist and zhan tiri cultist and she and the princess broke zhan tiri out of void jail; also ft. "flynn rider but he's a cop," "casscaine childhood friends to lovers edition," "gothel the failed scion vs cas the lifelong cultist," "tathēdora gets to live," and "zhan tiri becomes rapunzel's emotional support demon"

2. Album of the year? Leprous - Aphelion. Used to listen to Leprous a lot a few years ago, then they made some albums I really didn't enjoy, and now they came back in all their glory with Aphelion. Mhhh superb 👌

4. Movie of the year? Dune, since it's the only movie I've seen in theater this year. Absolutely loved the visuals and the sound design and it actually gave me an idea of the overwhelming power and mightiness of space and the universe. Something Star Wars and Star Trek never had accomplished for me.

6. Episode of tv or webisode that defined the year for you? TV shows haven't shaped me as much as some YouTube videos have, and since this is the platform where I spend most of my time online I'm gonna focus on videos/channels that were important to me this year:

'Ask a Mortician - Let's Visit the Human Composting Facility' this has honestly been life changing for me. The idea of being burned or buried in a coffin never sat right with me. I always wanted to become a tree or something. Continuing as a part of nature. And this procedure makes that possible in the most natural and spiritual way. Given back to the earth that nurished you and gave you a home seems like the most fulfilling thing one can do after they have died.

Mr. Beast's Squid Game Video and the behind the scenes to that. This is just something that's way mind-blowing to me on a technical level and production standpoint. The fact that YouTube productions are at a point where they have hundreds of people behind the scenes and especially a whole VFX team just makes me speechless. And I find it even more impressive that they used Unreal for all of it. Unreal Engine is literally changing so much in the industry right now.

'Not Just Bikes' Definitely my favorite channel of the year. I never thought that urban planning and design could be so interesting. Especially when you look at the US and see how faulty it is and how it affects so many parts of life and the system itself. I've been planning to move to the Netherlands for a long time now, and this whole channel just strengthens that idea

8. Game of the year? Definitely 'Half-Life: Alyx'. Just standing in a basic room within the game and looking around makes me speechless. And the interactions are the stuff of dreams.

12. Talk about a new friend you made this year. A girl at Uni. And it's just a stupid situation because she is just as interested in nerdy stuff like me but she just started her studies and I'm going to write my master's thesis next semester. It's a shame that we won't have the opportunity to work on something together.

10. Something that made you cry this year? My grandpa's passing. It was the first time for me that someone within my close family has died. Really made me think a lot about death, aging and time passing.

14. Favorite book you read this year? Eeeeerrrrmm, about that...

18. A memorable meal this year? Seven course dinner at a michelin cook's restaurant for my boyfriend's birthday. Simply unbelievable. Things I've never tasted before. A truly memorable experience. 10/10 recommend

20. What’s something you learned this year? I learned a lot this year. About myself and the world. But with the crisis we are currently in I learned that people are fucking stupid. They scream freedom and you wave it in front of them and they wouldn't be able to see it. Fuck all of you virus deniers and morons against vaccines. May you choke on your fucking ego.

22. Favorite place you visited this year? Visited Amsterdam twice this year and I will visit it again for New Year's. I'm just in love with this city. Every time I go there I already feel like I'm home.

24. Did you keep any New Year’s Resolutions? I didn't even make any. I never do tbh. I just try to do my best in general.
