画家・ゴヤ

画家フランシスコ・デ・ゴヤ(1746〜1828年)を知ったのは高校生の頃で、美術だか歴史だかの教科書で彼の油彩画を見かけたのがきっかけだった。血塗れで横たわる人々の傍らで、銃口に囲まれた白シャツの男が目一杯に両腕を広げ、満身創痍の面差しで膝立ちになっている。〈マドリード、1808年5月3日(1814年)〉と題されたこのドラマティックな情景は、ナポレオン軍に抵抗を示すスペイン民衆の姿を描いたものだ。このような凄惨な戦争画を描いたゴヤが、宮廷に仕える高名な画家として当時からその才を認められ、金銭面において不自由のない生活を送っていたということにも驚かされた。実物の作品は現在、スペインのプラド美術館が所蔵している。

最近知ったことだが、ゴヤは「シュルレアリスムの先駆け」といわれているらしい。大学で散々美術史を学んだが、ゴヤに関していえば「後世の様々な画家に影響を与えた」というボンヤリとした認識しかなく、これを期に改めて調べていくうちに、この画家への理解を少し深めることができた。

黒い絵

先に述べたように、ゴヤは宮廷画家として生前から社会的に評価されており、安定した収入を得ていた。さらにその後制作された「黒い絵」のシリーズにおいて、構図、空間、モチーフの描き方など、これまでの絵画史上に類を見ない革新的な表現を切り拓き、彼は画家としての地位をいっそう高めた。絵画の新たな地平を築いた彼の偉業は世に広く行き渡り、シュルレアリスムだけでなく、ムンクなどの表現主義の画家や象徴主義の画家にも多大な影響を与えたとされている。

「黒い絵」はゴヤが宮廷画家の仕事を引退後、72歳の時(1819年)に買い取った家屋の壁面に描かれた14点の作品群をいう。それぞれにタイトルはなく、「黒い絵」というのもゴヤ本人による命名ではないらしい（モーリス・ルイスの「ヴェール」シリーズは後世に美術史家が命名したものだが、そのようなものだろうか）。ゴヤの長い画業における「黒い絵」の特異さは、この作品群が、ゴヤがこれまで職業として制作・発表してきた装飾絵画とは明らかに異なる、きわめて私的な創作物だという点にある。宗教風刺や市民戦争の情景（あるいはその比喩）が窺える「黒い絵」は、政治的批判の暗喩と考えられている。

〈我が子を食らうサトゥルヌス(1819〜1823年)〉を除いて、「黒い絵」は日本においてあまりメジャーではない。だが、死や孤独への強烈な不安感、恐怖心によって狂気の淵を渡り歩くようなこれらの作品をひと目見て、殴られるような衝撃を受ける鑑賞者は少なくないはずだ。

上記シリーズが描かれたのは1819〜1923年の間とされている。苛烈な負の感情が噴出するこれらの絵画はいかにして生まれたのか。時代を振り返ると、ゴヤは母国スペインでナポレオン戦争(1799～1815年)を経験している。残虐で非情な現実を突きつけられ、人間や社会に対し強い憤りや悲しみを感じていたことは想像に難くない。また、彼はそれまでの人生において大病を患っており、日々病の再発に恐怖心を募らせていたともいわれている。悲観主義、恐怖、ミステリアス、苛烈で非現実的な空間。時代背景とゴヤ個人に降り掛かった悲劇を考慮すると、これらの絵は生まれるべくして生まれてきたように思われる。

黒い絵の制作後、彼はスペイン内戦(1936〜1939年)の惨劇にも見舞われている。厳しい時代を生きた画家だった。またこれは余談だが、ゴヤの死亡後、亡命先の墓地に埋葬された彼の頭蓋骨は盗掘に遭い、その所在は未だ不明らしい。

この度知ったことは、そんなところだ。シュルレアリスムは1924年、アンドレ・ブルトンが著した『シュルレアリスム宣言・溶ける魚』の発表に始まる（この年に谷崎潤一郎が37歳で『白痴の愛』の連載開始、宮沢賢治が28歳で『春と修羅』を出版している。年齢は年数から単純計算）。ゴヤについて知り、彼に惹かれ、筆者が好む西洋美術史上のムーブメントであるシュルレアリスムの川上に画家・ゴヤがいたという事実に行き着けたことは率直に嬉しい。
