Hiccup is a prime example of that specific type of autism where you were ostracized for being different as a kid then later in life struggle to empathize with other people and are better at relating to and connecting with animals.
Like that scene when they were on the ship they found the dragon eye in??? They see the bones of dragons and Hiccup is visibly disturbed and upset that Toothless has to be seeing this, then like less than a minute later he pries something out of the hand of a human skeleton and has little to no reaction to seeing it other than 'ew'

difficulty maintaining eye contact
his gift of prophecy gives autistic pattern recognition vibes

direct communication style
stimming
has a special interest
anxious
doesn’t feel useful to his family (i hate how familiar this feeling is)

I like to think Hiccup has whole 'conversations' with Toothless that are essentially incomprehensible to anyone but them (they consist of little human language–mostly draconic noises and body language as well as signals/cues specific to Hiccup and Toothless) the other riders are used to it at this point, but a lot of people are very much not and find it incredibly confusing.
Its started a lot of rumors of Hiccup being some 'dragon whisperer' that can actually speak to and command them and the other riders tease him about it relentlessly because he despises the rumors and always tries to correct them. Like every time they're brought up he'll say something along the lines of "No. If u actually pay attention to and connect with them, adapting to their way of communication isn't hard. I don't actually speak with them ur just not observant enough" and is constantly ignored
(This is kind of a follow-up to another post but I didn't want to tack it onto a rb)

We as a fandom need to abandon stereotypical nerd boy Hiccup in our modern Httyd aus.Let's be realistic-Hiccup is a huge dorkward but he's also one of the most transmasc-coded characters of the 2010s,was born physically disabled(weak constitution + smaller and more fragile than others his age)and has a prosthetic by the end of the first film AND was written in a way that made him be autistic with adhd, mdd and anxiety. He'd be a punk and i mean an ACTUAL punk dude instead of just an EdgelordTM,there's no other outcome that works speaking as an irl (pastel) punk

Autistic Hiccup stimming by rocking back and forth, snapping his fingers or scratching Toothless- sometimes all three at one time depending.
Autistic Hiccup data dumping about Toothless to his friends who patiently listen (or atleast pretend to).
Autistic Hiccup really liking hearing Viggo talk because Viggo doesnt yell like the others, and he always has something new to say, and the way he talks makes Hiccup need to rock back and forth.
Autistic Hiccup hating having his hair/head touched unless explicitly asked.
Autistic Hiccup having a meltdown during storms or if he burns himself (Inferno, the hearth, in the forge, etc). He claws at his thighs and has a tough time breathing unless he's in a completely dark space- so Toothless always wraps him up in his wings.
Autistic Hiccup perching when he works; nestled on the beams in his hut, crouched on his desk, balanced precariously on Toothless's back or head.
Autistic Hiccup having sensory issues with rope, so Viggo and Dagur use metal manacles or chains.
Autistic Hiccup likes hugs but he's picky and prefers to initiate them on his own.
Autistic Hiccup who makes aggressive eye contact.
