“Mmm?” Jenny beams.

Nothing in the world has to matter, anymore, now that the Hellmouth’s gone and there are Slayers all around. Giles’s world can condense to this room, this music, his wife in his arms. He knows it won’t--they’re fighters, both of them, and they’ll be back to fighting in a few months at the latest--but it’s a choice, now, not destiny, and there’s something incredibly freeing about that.

But Giles doesn’t have to say any of this. He’ll have time, later. He has all the time in the world. "I love you,” he says, and takes two graceful steps that press Jenny up against the wall as they kiss.

Buffy turns in her chair and watches as Cordy winds a strand of her hair around a curling iron. “Oh, so you think I’m gonna win now?”

“No.” She glances over and catches Buffy’s eye but then quickly looks away. “I’m simply saying if you do, I don’t want my girlfriend looking trashy, especially if she’s in the spotlight.”

Buffy feels the corner of her mouth quirk up. “That’s kinda sweet actually.”

“On second thought, wear the red lipstick.” Cordy tosses her the tube. “You’re not going to win, anyway.”

“And we’re back to prickly,” Buffy says, snagging the lipstick out of the air with a laugh. “I thought we decided to put the claws away and enjoy the dance.”

“We’re not at the dance yet,” Cordelia points out, spritzing a perfect curl with hairspray.

“Cordelia,” Buffy says, chiding.

“Oh, don’t give me that. I know all you can think about while you’re watching me get ready is how you can sabotage my makeup or hair. You hate that I look so good tonight.”

“You’re way off base,” Buffy says, her voice pitched low.

She can see Cordy shiver in response to her tone. “Oh yeah? Well then what are you thinking?”

“I think you know.” Buffy moves to stand behind Cordelia’s chair.

As if acting on instinct, she presses back, trying to get as close to Buffy as possible. “Maybe. But I like to hear you use your words.”

With a smirk, Buffy bends over so her mouth is right next to Cordy’s ear. “I’m thinking about kissing that lipstick right off your pretty mouth.”

“So what’s stopping you?”

Responding to the challenge in Cordelia’s tone, Buffy presses two fingers under her chin and coaxes her face up before pressing their lips firmly together.

When they break apart, Cordy says, breathless, “I think a warm plum would go better with your complexion.”

Buffy takes the lipstick Cordy’s offering with a smile. “I have the best girlfriend.”

“What can I say?” Cordelia raises her eyebrows at Buffy in the mirror. “I have the makings of a queen.”

Buffy can’t even argue.
