I think of great anime and those that could have been beyond remarkable. None hurt my heart as much as Soul Eater. The action was dynamic, the inner conflict of each main protagonist was compelling. And having read the Manga to completion. The contrast of where the anime fell short is glaring.
Maka Albarn the Meister and her partner and weapon Soul.
The conflict she has with her father and her inability to trust fully. While trying to spire to the same heights as her career woman of meister mother. Made her come off as an overachiever. Who at the same time stifled her own potential by denying an essential part of herself.
Kid death/Death the kid and his twin weapons also known as former bandits The Cline sisters (i might have gotten their names wrong) Make for a unique pair. His OCD and aesthetic sensibility towards all things symmetrical. As well as being the son of Lord Death himself. Is one of the more powerful students of the Death academy. Groomed to be a successor this heir apparent has a distinct sense of identity while knowing that someday he'll have to step into his father's shoes. Not just as the head of the academy but as head of the meister organization itself.
Those are never seen as burdens to him. Because as always his pursuit of perfection and symmetry are as ever his main focus. His strengths can at times be his faults.
Black Star and Tsubaki our resident ninja duo. You may be use to the crazy. Hyperactive, knucklehead trope. And having that character walk a fine line between righteousness and depravity. You'll find Black Starand Tsubaki strolling along that precipice with ease. Trying to avoid extinction as the last surviving member of the Star clan. A assassin group that lived in the shadows. Black Star breaks the cycle by overcoming his dark fate though he lacks the level of maturity that the others have.
His will and ability are far from lacking. And his weapon having her own trials to overcome made these two one of the best meister and weapon pairs.
An honorable mention as someone who becomes a member of the crew later.
CRONA and his weapon Blackbood
Having the unique disposition of being the child of a witch and a meister. Crona was also experimented on by his own mother. And forcibly injected with the blood from a corrupted soul. This black blood gave them horrific and terrible power at the cost of their sanity. Even the tainted wavelength of his soul had a corrupting influence. His weapon itself is a mass of blackwood coagulated into a sword. Unlike other weapons. This one is a part of him and can not leave his body.
Maka's kindness towards him and even her facing the madness induced by the black blood upon their intial confrontation. Would later lead to understanding. As she became the first one to befriend Crona.
Soul Eater had such a unique design, that was so stylized that it felt like graffiti in motion.
The main trio.still rain some of my top animated protagonist. And I look back fondly on binging the anime and then the Manga because I was so invested in seeing how their story came to a climax.

I love Soul Eater, I truly do, however, one thing I get a little salty about with the anime (idk if the manga does better with it I sadly haven’t got to read it yet) is how Souls part in the black blood plot gets kind of overlooked. Like we really only saw him talking about the nightmares once, and then some of his interactions with the little demon, but it’s mainly focused on both Maka feeling like she needs to get “stronger” to reach Soul, and feeling like she doesn’t trust her, and then the black blood getting transferred into Maka, and her little trip into insanity. Don’t get me wrong I love Maka, but I feel like we could’ve been shown more of Souls struggles with it, especially just on his own (most of it that we saw was when they were doing resonance, the only one not was his nightmare we saw like once or twice)
This all being said, I’m just rewatching for the first time in a while, and haven’t got to season 2 yet, so maybe I’m forgetting some stuff.

i want nothing more than for Soul Eater to have an OVA. nothing but a fight scene for ~20 minutes. where Maka + Soul’s go from the bright uniform to the piano form, Kid w/the stictched mouth, Black✰Star in the white fit + Baki in full demon wepon mode, + Crona.. in whatever the fuck they were in
i just want a showcase of them existing in those fits

"15 years and our show still hasn't had a remake to reflect the ending the manga got!? What the hell!?"
"Maka, you're poking through the fourth wall again. S'not cool, reign it in..."
