[Video description: A 60-second timelapse of the process of the above painting.]
The timelapse was made with Clip Studio (a record of my actions on the canvas), not a screen recording, so it doesn't show all the back and forth I did with the undo button trying to get the lineart right, lol. It's pretty condensed, too. There's a 15-minute version if anyone is interested...
I get a weird kick out of seeing all these macho Navy men holding these big hats like unwieldy handbags in the crook of their arm throughout all these strategy meetings. I also covet their jackets.
So I wanted character art but I can't draw, so instead I spent nine months making this uniform my main character wears in the book.
Imagine, if you will, the high seas and the Age of Sail. The customs. The amazing clothes. Then transplant that whole aesthetic into space. And make it gay.
That's it, that's the book.
Anyway I love historical clothes, so I made ridiculously accurate historical clothes for my character even though she lives in the future.
Here are a few of the pictures, you can find more in the link at the end:
This is all based on late 18th/early 19th century models (ie, what Captain Jack Aubrey would wear) with a few changes to make it spaceworthy. Wool coat, wool hat (purchased), linen shirt, canvas duck waistcoat and breeches.
Here's more about the process, models, where I wore it, and so on. https://sheilajenne.com/2023/06/09/my-imperial-martian-navy-uniform/
So I saw a Black Sails gif set, but didn't want to derail that post so here I am making a new post. And just to be clear, I love Black Sails, it's an amazing show (though because of lack of time I haven't finished it yet so no spoilers okay).
Black Sails has terrible costuming, but I gotta say, I didn't remember it was as bad as modern bra being clearly visible under supposedly 18th century gown. The costuming in general has barely anything to do with history (and even when it tries at least, it's mostly way off, like here, the bodice resembles something from latter half of 1800s, when the show is supposed to be set around 1720), but that's not necessarily an issue.
I love the costuming in another excellent (and just as accurately queer (the only historical accuracy a good pirate story really needs)) pirate show, Our Flag Means Death, and it's at least as non-historical as in Black Sails. However, it has cohesive aesthetic, it does something with the costuming and the deviations from history, and it looks good. I can't say anything of the sort with Black Sails. In OFMD the costuming also fits the very outlandish and comedic tone, while Black Sails is grounded in history and reality (while takes a lot of liberties with history) and the aesthetics of the show in general try to evoke gritty realism. In general it feels mostly like the show doesn't even try with the costuming, and leaving the modern bra visible definitely speaks to that.
I don't have a grand point here, I just needed to put this out there because I don't want to suffer alone this egregious costuming choice.
Hahaha I do!! I was late to that fandom (I finally watched the show spring of 2021), but it was so worth the wait, and honestly sometimes it's nice to show up late, reblog some gifsets, read some fic, and not feel pressured to publicly engage apart from that. I was especially in it for the women...Miranda my beloved, Madi, Max, Eleanor, Anne, Idelle...and also Jack Rackham lol. Who are your faves?
