Troll biology headcanons

Their eyes are by comparison much larger than humans because of their nocturnal nature, this is even more dramatic in seadwellers with eyes adapted to the twilight zone of water.

They grow as long as they're alive, it just gets slower once they've reached maturity (much like many invertebrates and reptiles).

Adult trolls can use infrasound* communication, most trolls can purr, all trolls can growl and chirp (more like a feline chirp, not avian).

They possess both an endoskeleton and a pseudo exoskeleton. They're not as jointed and stiff as earthly insects but they have a flexible yet durable rubbery/leathery skin that resembles an endoskeleton more than true skin in structure, this molts periodically as they grow. Less often with age.

Seadwellers will regrow teeth like sharks, possess a swim bladder, and have distinctly webbed digits. Some have bioluminescent freckles and patterns.

While rumblespheres are visually analogous to human breasts, they obviously aren't mammary in nature. It's far more likely they're vocal structures/chambers (hence their name), signifying hierarchy in matriarchal troll societies using distinct vocal signatures.

Sexual morphism in trolls is determined not by gonads but the presence or lack of rumblespheres**, and sexual phenotypes in trolls range far beyond two. This is also true in humans, but even more prominent and common among trolls due to their insane gene pool. Humans have the label intersex for this because of the marginalization of said people (hi, I'm intersex), trolls have no need for any such label because it's completely the norm and not considered remarkable or notable that multiple sexual phenotypes exist, which in turn effected how trolls view sexual morphism which is entirely different from how humans do.

They would not be considered sexually dymorphic, but rather sexually omnimorphic. (Though, as an intersex individual I'd say humans arguably aren't dymorphic either, intersex conditions are actually rather common)

Troll scar tissue lightly shows their blood color because it's less pigmented with grey.

Freckles in trolls can range from black and grey (genetic) to a shade of the trolls blood color (sun damage).

Their claws can range from black and grey to shades seen in their horns depending on pigmentation, more rarely one may have claws that are without pigment and therefore show their blood color.

Psiioniic users have electrochemical organs unique to their bloodline that generate their power much like real world animals that weaponize electricity.

Trolls exhibit some level of hivemind capabilities resembling those of bees and ants, which is why telepathic abilities of varying kinds are rather common. Trolls with mind control abilities employ similar methods to the hivemind authority of a colony queen bee/ant. They use different methods depending on the type of control they possess (classic mind control, lusus/beast control, lime blood pacification), and this likely would boil down to pheromones and chemistry, but could also be metaphysical or parapsychological.

Trolls with enhanced strength employ some structural integrity seen in the anatomy of ants, proportionally the strongest creature known to man. These individuals have reinforced skeletal structures to withstand the weight of a lift (much like ants) as well as corded and efficient muscle anatomy that can withstand tearing more effectively.

*infrasound is sound outside of the human range of auditory perception but can be Felt and otherwise detected, and creates a sense of unease in humans naturally. Infrasound can in some cases travel miles depending on the size of the creature making it. Examples of infrasound in nature include tigers, elephants, and the charismatic T-Rex.

**sexual morphism refers to the anatomical sex phenotypes and is not to be mistaken with gender, we know trans trolls exist just like in humans and of course they do.

I study evolutionary biology for fun a lot in my spare time so I spend a lot of time thinking about aliens I see in media and how they'd function with realistic biological mechanisms lmao

Happy Walls Dayyy!!!!!! Today was the first anniversary of our #1 fave debut album of 2020, and we all celebrated, Louis included! Last but best thing first: WE GOT A DEMO!! Louis ended the day by publishing a dreamy clip of a demo of the title song ‘Walls’. His clear voice croons over beautiful sliding electric guitars and background reverberance- if that’s his FIRST draft then he is, as we knew, a GENIUS! AND, the King Himself came on twitter to interact with his “loyal” (his words) subjects (that’s us!). He popped up at first to say that his tour, when it comes around, will be “fucking unbelievable...this is our day!”, and talked about his favorite part of the last year (“the two shows I played”), what he noticed most when performing solo the first times (“the space on stage” ughhhh all the tears), what he was looking forward to after COVID (“everything”) and getting through these times- “remember that everything is going to be better when normality sets back in.” He also explained that while he was gonna put out merch today, he “didn’t want to market the day”, but rather make it “a celebration just for us”. But, uh, the merch will be coming eventually! He then replied that there were “too many greedy fuckers out there” who try turn celebratory events into a “cash grab” (to quote the fan), and harries then got mad at that because THEY were like this must be about Harry (lol uhhhh) and assumed he was shading him and Jeff rather than, I don’t know, his OWN FORMER LABEL?? Cool cool cool, but it’s still Harry’s moth on Spotify, so cope. He told us that his proudest moment on the album was recording the strings for the Walls the Single, that he wouldn’t have approached the process differently because he’s still really proud of the album, that he was most looking forward to us hearing KMM or Walls, that Doncaster is his fav place (to no one’s surprise lmao), and, asked what song he likes to rock out to off HIS ALBUM was like oh hey have I got a rec for you: “Maybe Tomorrow” by the Stereophonics. It goes, “think I'll walk me outside and buy a rainbow smile, but be free” and “maybe tomorrow I’ll find my way home” (huh is there something happening tomorrow that could be linked to... OH. Right. Huh. Well all that is just a coincidence I’m sure, it’s not like Louis ever said he likes to rec songs because he wants us to read into the lyrics or anything... oh wait.)

LTHQ did a insta quiz over on their stories (I only got two questions wrong!) and they did the promised virtual listening party and tweeted along to each song and retweeted fans’ reactions (and all the usernames, larries everywhere, we SEE YOU). Friends of Louis joined in the celebration- Only The Poets, Ashton Irwin of 5SoS fame, Helene Hornyck (“all the love,” she said!), Isaac Anderson and more, and All On The Board made one of their lovely Frankenstein poems which mashing up a bunch of LT1 songs, but in keeping with the theme of the day (and COVID I GUESS) did it as fanart rather than the usual in person board. And all of that was the BORING part of the day, can you BELIEVE?? The FUN part was the Walls Fanart that was chosen to be the new Spotify cards on the official Walls album. As in, they are up right now if you want to go check them out, but I’m gonna tell you straight up: they’re half Harry tats! The Defenseless card, especially, as it is just straight up fanart of Harry’s moth tattoo, especially fun when he had JUST got us talking about its Papillion origin with his finsta! The artist had been worried that Louis would be mad at them for submitting ‘Larry art’, and was overjoyed to learn that, uh... apparently, he was NOT. That was not all! The ‘Too Young’ art card is H’s rose tattoo, ‘Habit’ and ‘Fearless’ were both different variations of H’s anatomical heart tat (the ‘Habit’ one even included the word kind :{) ), and the We Made It rainbow wheel did, in fact, make it to Spotify, just like we thought! “Perfect Now” was Louis standing under a rainbow spotlight—they made that one black and white for spotify but the artist shared the original version. Harries were beside themselves, and tagged Jeff (Azoff), Ben Winston, and Gemma Styles (what?), demanding that they make Louis take the art down because it was clearly Harry art, which 1.) how much more blatant can you be if even ANTIS are noticing and 2.) what sort of control do they think Jeff, Ben, and Gemma have over Louis seeing as, uh, none of them currently work for him??? Weird, are they thinking there might be some kind of link... between Harry and his team and Louis... tell me more antis, truly, I’m fascinated!

One would think that’s more than enough for one day but WAIT THERE’S MORE Zayn is in EXCELLENT quirky Zayn form having fun with his own merch—he posted a gremlin (from the old RL Stine movie ‘Gremlins’) in a NIL beanie captioned “one size fits all humanoid shaped heads” late last night, haaaaa. Yes, I agree! The red stitching really makes the gremlin’s red eyes pop, and his fangs have never looked this good! And the question arose, is Harry’s finsta actually just his side account for following nothing but gay meme accounts? Evidence—the discovery of a second follow, of the openlygayanimals account-- would suggest yes! Well that’s valid, imagine having to not only navigate the internet AS HARRY but also without funny memes of your choice, that’s no life to lead. And Niall complained on twitter that people didn’t understand his sense of humor because SARCASM! He also tweeted about golf, which I’m sure was cool for people who understand it.

I’ve never really thought that hard about Shino, so my first step was to try and research popular Shino ships. I first tried to do this by going into his character tag on AO3 and looking in the most popular relationship tags, but none of them actually included him. Then I just typed in “Aburame Shino/” and looked at what AO3 suggested. Then I was going to only list the top three but I am a scientist and I like data, so I went through all of them and now we have to cut for space.

So, Shino/Kiba is the clear leader here. I didn’t actually go too much through the types of fics present, but I assume the appeal of this ship rests on 1) they are teammates and therefore must Get Each Other in an intimate way that other characters don’t, 2) One Quiet Character and One Loud Character is a fun ship dynamic, and then 3) fans do lean more towards mlm ships because... complicated reasons lmao. I assume the appeal of Shino/Naruto is similar to #2 and 3, with the loss of #1 made up for with closeness by being in the academy and also greater general fan fondness for Naruto over Kiba.

I’m actually surprised Shino/Hinata has so few stories! Fans really like Hinata, and I think Shino would be really supportive of her. Also I think Hinata has the potential to vibe with Shino pretty well... they both seem like characters who value intimacy in spending just.... little quiet moments with their loved ones. Like, I can see them having really compatible love languages?

Shino/Tenten being #4 is really interesting. Is the theme of the ship being characters forgotten by the plot?? LMAO. That’s sort of an interesting dynamic, though... Like, I’ve always conceptualized Tenten as someone who refuses to be forgotten, even if her teammates are a snarky genius and the two loudest people in Konoha. Meanwhile, Shino seems to struggle with making his opinions known.... I think not due to shyness, but because he assumes them to be self-evident? So in this respect I can see Tenten being the one to turn to Shino and be like AND WHAT DO YOU THINK? and just like... remind him to articulate himself out loud. Meanwhile, Shino is a breath of fresh air compared the high-energy people Tenten usually hangs out with.

Anyway! I think that most of these ships are friends-to-lovers (except Kankuro and Gaara, which I guess could be shades of enemies-to-lovers or rivals-to-lovers). Which is a fine dynamic but we all know I like weird crackships and enemies-to-lovers!! So here’s some ideas:

Shino/Gaara - Shino draws Gaara in the chunin exams instead of Lee. This would be a really interesting fight, since I think kikaichu could potentially get around sand, but also idk how they’re fair against a jinchuriki? Anyway, absolutely no one is expecting any of the rookie 9 to make a dent in Gaara, so Shino definitely makes an impression.

Shino/Deidara - YES I WILL JUST SHIP DEIDARA WITH ANYONE. Iirc team 8 is in the area for the Deidara/Sasuke fight, so let’s just say that Deidara survives the fight but is severely injured. Shino points out anatomically inaccuracies in a clay bug and Deidara loses his shit. Romance!!

I almost made a joke in the above ship like “who would win -- Team 8 tracking Sasuke or Karin tracking Deidara??” I actually don’t remember if that was what either party was even doing. but then: Shino/Karin tracker ship. They have to work together for something post-canon. Karin has a LOT of questions about the.... the bug thing*?? How does that work.

*My personal HC for the Aburame clan is that people in Konoha are pretty used to The Bug Thing. Like, they’re taught from a young age to recognize kikaichu and not to hurt them. People from other villages can be... less understanding.

I dunno if this was a legit question asking for a legit answer, but I do happen to have a legit answer so I might as well give it! If I wanted to go into detals with it it’d take me forever though, so allow me to separate it into two points to make it easier

I learnt how to be very fast in putting down my lines and trained myself into not overthinking every single dot I put down. This took about five or six years of drawing daily and a whole life of drawing occasionally before then, because to do so you need to reach a point where you’re drawing something you’ve drawn so many times that by now your hand sort of goes without you needing to think about it much, so it’s not a fast process, but boy is it worth it. Mostly learning how to not overthink it, overthinking it used to be 90% of my time spent on a drawing and dear god did it suck the joy out of everything I drew

I have two very distinctive ways of approaching a drawing, one where I actually put effort in it and the other where I just want to let the squiggles out of my pen, and warm ups are the second one - the lack of effort I’m putting in can have different forms and show in different ways, so a warm up could be a fully colored piece as it could be just a pencil doodle, depending on where and on what exactly I’m being lazy: it could be the type of tool I’m using that allows me to draw without having to line, it could be a very tiny canvas that lets me avoid a ton of details a big canvas would demand. I might be cutting the time I usually put in making sure my anatomy is correct, I might be using a shading technique that takes a tenth of the time my usual one would, I might be using a style that’s just easier and faster to draw, or drawing characters I’ve drawn a trillion times in extremely generic poses and clothes. There’s a lot of things that I can do to make things faster for me! It’s skills you gain as you draw a lot - you learn how to draw things the hard way, and then you realize that along the way you learnt how to do them the easy way too

Ahhh god thank you so much!! And... hmm let’s see if I can word this properly and have it make sense - always keeping in mind that this is just my opinion, of course!

If all you want to do is to draw, then all you need to do is to pick up your pencil and draw - it’s really that easy as far as I’m concerned. You don’t need to know anatomy in depth to just draw, everyone has seen a person, everyone knows how a person looks. That is, if all you want to do is to draw for the sake of drawing. If you want to draw an anatomically correct looking human being, though, you do need to know how anatomy works - and the deeper you’ll go into studying it the more correct your people will look. It’s kind how everyone can draw a bicycle, but if you want to draw a realistic bicycle you’re gonna need to look up references for it, you know? It’s all on the level at which you’re interested in drawing, the more technically skilled you want to be the more you’ll have to study

As for my personal experience with this, I hate studying with a passion. Studying puts a damper on my enjoyement of everything, and drawing isn’t excluded from this - you put a book in front of me expecting me to study it and suddenly I never want to pick up a pencil again. This means that I never sat down and studied anatomy in depth and all in one go just to learn how to draw a human being, but it doesn’t mean that I didn’t, slowly and now and again and in bits and pieces, study parts of the body to get a better understanding of it. I know better about the skeleton than I do about muscles, and I still have enough to learn about everything that anyone who’s studied anatomy properly would find a trillion mistakes in everything I draw, but my way of going about drawing has always been and always will be putting my enjoyement of it first and foremost, so I’m not interested in putting myself through a tour-de-force to learn everything there is to know about anatomy just to make my doodles look appealing to someone with a medical degree haha I’m just doing me, and when the mood is right I look up how to properly draw something, but until then I just do it as best as I can with my limited knowledge, being fully aware that what I’m producing is far from accurate but being willing to make that compromise for my own comfort

So that’s my opinion on it lol it all boils down to how important it is for you to know how to properly draw the human body - of course it’s gonna look more professional and better if you’ve studied it, but everyone has their own priorities, you know?

So pretty much my way of learning this specific skill was being obsessed with elves when I was fifteen and wanting to draw them all the time and also for whatever reason being convinced that they were not supposed to wear shoes so I just drew a lot of feet with references and tutorials and stuff till I could draw my elves properly. Which isn’t necessarily what you need to do to learn how to draw feet, but, I mean, it worked for me lol

Oh, I actually don’t care about that at all? The fifth in a series exploring the popular modern folklore of cryptozoology and what Mythos forces may have inspired it.

Water monsters

If any cryptid is discovered to literally exist, precisely as described by legend and folk-lore, it will probably be a water monster. The ocean is a big place and it's easy to believe we could miss a large animal in the lightless depths.

That said, the physical evidence for sea serpents is just as dubious as it is for any other cryptid, with a lack of clear photos and any biomaterial turning up inconclusive at best and known animals or hoaxes at worst.

Water Horse

Typified by its relatively stocky build and a horse-like head with a mane and/or short horns. Water horses once seemed ubiquitous amongst sea and lake monsters but have been largely replaced outside of a few stubborn hold outs, such as the Loch Oich monster.

Plesiosauroid

Relic plesiosaurs are definitely one of the most iconic cryptids, with their humped back, four diamond shaped flippers and curving swan-like neck. Funnily enough, paleontologists do not think that prehistoric plesiosaurs could lift their necks at an angle like that. Either their modern descendants evolved to more easily stretch out of the water or the plesiosauroids are actually a completely different animal exhibiting parallel evolution.

Or they’re the ghosts of sauropods.

Super Eel

These immense serpents are common sights amongst sea monsters although they range wildly in detail. Super eels have been described as literally just giant eels or similar fish, elongated crocodilian reptiles and something like a basilosaurus.

Many-finned

Described as a long serpentine creature with a segmented armored hide, a dozen fins and in at least one sighting, a walrus-like head. A similar serpent with a distinctly arthropod appearance known as the con rít (centipede) has been sighted in the waters around vietnam.

Not all sightings can be neatly classified however.

A serpent sighted in Cape Sable, Nova Scotia in 1976 was certainly an odd one. It is said that it was built like a 50 foot sea horse, with greyish snake-like skin covered in barnacles. The strangest part was its head, which witnesses described as something like a crocodile's but tusked and having huge bloodshot red eyes that projected out of the skull on stalks!

Kaunuzoth, the glowing thing of Moore Lake

Members of Glaaki's slug-like species can be found in freshwater lakes all over the world, resting from their interdimensional journeys. Kaunuzoth is one such entity, albeit a particularly strange one.

Something really has been seen in the Moore Lake Reservoir. In 1968 a trio of youths (known only as Michael, Richard and Cindy) were having a midnight fish at the side of the lake. Around 2 in the morning one of the fishers noticed a red glow in the water about a quarter mile away before it disappeared. At first they remained unconcerned but suddenly all the night noises ceased and they noticed the glow was back, only 30 feet from the dock. They claimed that the red glow they noticed was a pair of eyes, set in a white crocodilian skull. But what really scared them is that there was something else out there, something huge that loomed in the darkness behind those glowing red eyes. As the crocodile-like head surged towards the dock they raced back to their car and fled the area, leaving their supplies behind. As they looked behind, they noticed the red glow filling the water around their abandoned dock. The local police investigated, although they found nothing but the remains of what seemed to be a feast of raw horned trout.

Other people have seen the red glowing eyes or were plunged into a stifling silence but nobody has reported seeing the huge thing in the darkness since.

Bokrug, the Great Water Lizard

Bokrug is one of the small gods, a native to Earth’s Dreamlands. Bokrug was once a greater and more active god but when his people, the Thunn'ha of Ib, were destroyed he was made lesser for it. He spent 1000 years gathering strength for his final revenge against the perpetrators and nearly spent the last of himself in their destruction.

Now he sleeps at the bottom of his lake, with only the shades of Ib to keep him company. Very little could persuade him to come to the waking world but there are a few things that could awaken his ire enough to make the trip.

The Covington family are old, old money. Descended from british nobility, their family has traditionally lived in a palatial estate in the english countryside and they want for nothing. Lately however, their fortunes appear to have changed. The Covingtons are dropping like flies and the servant staff has fled. Rumours abound of ghostly figures seen wandering their land and a serpent has been seen in the nearby lake, each time coinciding with the death of a Covington. Lord Covington is desperate for this to stop and has spared no expense in bringing all manner of Investigator to the estate.

However, he hides a secret from those who would help; in the secret history of their family they came from a city called Sarnath in the country of Mnar, a place that has never appeared on any map of any age. They fled some ancient disaster with the treasures of that land and used it to buy their nobility. Their ancestors sent forward a warning, to stay far from water, to fear the Great Lizard and to anoint the “shard of Ib” with blood every 10 years. Lord Covington never believed that superstitious twaddle and when his father died a decade ago, he sold the stupid thing on auction.

Chaugnar-Spawn

One of the more out-there theories hanging over the loch ness monster is that it is in fact a swimming elephant, either having escaped from a zoo in the 1930s or perhaps even stranger, a hidden species of pachyderm native to western Europe. Perhaps they’re on to something?

While not at all elephants, the vampiric entities known as the Chaugnar-Spawn do closely resemble them and share some anatomical features. Just like an elephant the Chaugnar-Spawn can use their trunks as a snorkel while swimming!

The advancement of humanity has driven the Chaugnar-Spawn out of their traditional hunting grounds, into deep woods and jungles and more insidiously, beneath the waters of the world. So much of human civilization is located on the shore it is very convenient for a semi-aquatic predator looking to snatch some easy prey.

Byatis

The serpent bearded Byatis, 3rd god of divination. Lore of Byatis is widespread but light on detail, with only the 3rd volume of the Revelations of Glaaki having any real information.

In regards to its supposed relation to Cthulhu and the Star Spawn, human authors were actually more accurate than they usually are in claiming such things. While Byatis is neither a star spawn itself or any kind of “water elemental” it is a member of another species that calls the stellar corona of Xoth home. It came to Earth with them, hitching a ride as the remora does the shark.

Byatis is adept at a form of astral projection that is massively disruptive to local subspace conditions, awakening spirits and drawing residual psychic impressions (also known as a stone-tape haunting) from both past and future. Its projections can even manifest in a smaller, ectoplasmic form in these zones, the spidery toad-like spirit giving rise to the legend of the Berkeley Toad.

Yith-Parrallel Aquaform

Although their technology often resembled it, the Yith did not have much use for magic. In their eyes the whims of greater powers can't compare to the reliability of rune circuitry, psychic metal and atomic power. Things changed when the time came that the Polypous Ones broke free of their ancient prison to war against the Yith. Some radical thinkers (not coincidentally many of them deemed unworthy of braincasting forward in time) turned to the occult lore so far only recorded for historical posterity. With the aid of an unknown entity (or entities) these Yith escaped sideways onto another earth, one where the Elder Things never landed, where the Polypous Ones were never born and the biosphere grew independent of the Shoggothim.

Now they are back in this instance of Earth. Perhaps they have been for millennia, watching and waiting. But for what? Are they merely following in the footsteps of the ancient Yith and observing for anthropological purposes, or is the presence of their aquatic spies a sign of some more nefarious goal?

I love everyone you’ve mentioned! I don’t draw them often, and I don’t think I’ve ever drawn Isabel (well I did draw her as a chibi once…), but it’s only because there are too many things for me to draw and too many characters that I need to draw every single day to survive lol I think I didn’t draw them this year.

I love Levi’s relationships with Furlan and Isabel, I think they’re very cute and family-like. What I find particularly interesting is that they weren’t scared of Levi like his og squad was (no shade towards them, they just respected him deeply). And I think Levi senses some of this familiarity and “oh we don’t think you’re God-like, you’re our (old) dude” from his current squad too. But that’s the topic for another day…

OG Levi squad is great too! Oluo is my fave out of all of them haha. Petra is very good too, I love her judging Oluo’s ooc performance of alpha Levi. Eld and Gunter are more difficult for me to remember sadly, but I remember all of them fondly.

As characters with so little screentime in a story that is so massive, it’s not surprising that there aren’t much concepts with them. But it’s a shame, they’re very fun.

Bad Vegetarian | Feeding Habits #1

Hey People of Earth!

As you can see from the title, not only do we have a new series of writing updates, we have a new series of writing updates for a whole new novel that was! not! supposed! to! happen!

For any of my friends who miss Moth Work (aka myself), guess who started writing a sequel literally no one asked. :)

I’ve had ideas for spinoff stories for Moth Work (as if MW wasn’t enough of a spinoff) and was peer pressured into starting this novel by @sarahkelsiwrites and I’m really happy about it! I have yet to come up with a title, but the moment I do, shall inform you, but for now, we’re calling this MW2!

This book (if it even ends up being a book) starts with chapter one, Bad Vegetarian. Unlike MW, MW2 starts in Lonan’s POV (not sure I’ll switch but I’m sure it’ll be inevitable), and I’m here for it!

I’ve been wanting to explore Lonan and Eliza’s relationship in more detail since having them come together in MW by complete fluke, and oh! is the tea piping!

This chapter really illustrates how truly dysfunctional this relationship is on both sides. Here’s a break down by scene:

Scene A:

Lonan is paint shopping with Eliza who has just gone vegetarian (which is the def the most normal thing she’s spontaneously done lately). Eliza feels like celebrating by painting their entire kitchen red.

Lonan particularly is drawn to blues, but since this ain’t what Eliza wants, they go with a brilliant red.

Scene B:

Lonan lines the kitchen with painter’s tape as Eliza bothers their neighbours for paint rollers, while trying to convince himself this relationship is still somewhat okay.

While doing this, he gets his weekly call from Unknown Woman who he’s been in contact with for the last few weeks. What for? We don’t know! They talk in code, and he realizes Unknown Woman’s situation is getting worse, and impromptu, tries to do something about it.

Scene C:

Lonan and Eliza bump into each other as he’s exiting the apartment and she’s entering, and have a short, strained conversation about why he’s leaving (she’s not aware of top secret phone calls that make this book feel lowkey like the old dystopians!)

Scene D:

Lonan attempts to drive to Unknown Woman but only knows she lives in Arizona (not great for directions lol). While in the car, he realizes it’s essentially impossible to get there without knowing where he’s going, and eventually gives up and heads home.

Scene E:

TW: blood

Lonan re-enters the apartment only to find Eliza “bleeding” in the kitchen. She’s actually just being wild and this “blood” is wall paint.

Scene F:

If we haven’t already seen the dysfunction, oh does it get worse! As Lonan and Eliza try to have a *moment* Eliza has a conversation by herself and gets a lil gaslighty.

Halfway through this, Lonan gets a phone call from Unknown Woman who we finally find out is his ex-girlfriend Glenne. Sounds like tea but he’s genuinely only helping her out of her toxic situation (which will be clarified later) though Eliza’s skeptical.

This chapter was a lot of fun to write! I wrote a majority of it today, and am really happy to have a *chill* project. While I love my other books (the three I am apparently now working on at once), it’s nice to have a place to dump my ideas with characters I know very well in situations I’m comfortable in whenever I feel like writing but don’t have tons of time/ideas/energy.

Excerpts:

Here are the opening three paragraphs! The first sentence sets up the POV a little weirdly, but I think it works with a later sentence that sort of mimics this “reminder” kind of style:

There are no rules, just remember, Eliza is vegetarian. She’s into earth tones, neutral tones, leafy greens, root vegetables. It’s all new. The day she announced her diet change, she also announced a desire to repaint the kitchen, to fit the new aura, to fit the new ethics, but she wants to paint the kitchen blood red, and Lonan is still a meat-eater. He reminds himself: there are no rules, just remember, Eliza is vegetarian.

In the hardware store he thumbs paint chips. They’re set up in an array, almost like checkers, dissolving in a gradient from reds to purples. Eliza wants red, “Not necessarily earthy, but the root of organism, of life,” so Lonan looks at the blues. They’re all a variant of a seaside theme—Sea Breeze, a cloud-like blue, Beach Umbrella, a wispy aqua, Seafoam Serenade, muted like the soft side of a turquoise. Repainting the kitchen matters little to him, and so do the blues, but the red section, devilish, makes him shuffle his blue deck faster.

Radio from the store’s intercom tins through the speakers, dampened by the hustle of carts, the thud of bodies against the concrete flooring. He holds many cards up to the light, Secret Getaway and Parisian Summer almost the exact shade, but still he flicks through, until half the pile is indistinguishable, and the other half are blues he likes and not reds, like Eliza’s asked.

The next excerpt sort of highlights the last six months of Lonan’s life as he’s been on this whirlwind of keeping up with all the things Eliza has tried. I have added kudzu pudding and other kudzu food just for my pals @sarahkelsiwrites and @shaelinwrites (rlly want kudzu pudding):

Her sudden vegetarianism is not confusing to him. Eliza tries new things all the time, something he’s learned after living with her for half a year. One time, she brought home four different kinds of dried beans to make into tea, and together they drank it atop the balcony, the Vegas strip across them somehow tasting better. One time, they ate a variety of kudzu foods for a week because Eliza said invasive species had to be killed somehow, and so they spooned kudzu pudding into their mouths, kudzu root powder into their water, kudzu salads with salted almonds. One time, she put them on a warmth ban, and they ate only frozen peas, potatoes, raspberries, turned the thermostat down until every surface crackled. She liked the feeling of subtle frost on the countertops, how it jolted her when she touched it accidentally in the morning. He found her many mornings awake before him, transfixed to the table with both palms soldered to its surface, like she’d forgotten she wasn’t a part of it. One time, she paid to have the furniture in the house rearranged, not good enough for her spirit, and then reverted it two days later. “The couch doesn’t like being so close to the refrigerator,” and he could’ve asked “did you ask it?” but said, “Understandable. It shouldn’t be forced to catch a draft.” So her vegetarianism is normal. Already, she’s switched their meat supply to beetroots, chickpeas, tofu she rips apart bare-handed. For the last three mornings, they’ve both taken a shot of spinach and gingerroot, a liquid that burns to make you feel alive, as if you weren’t already.

The next excerpts kind of surprised me with their amount of humour! Not something I expect from Lonan, but I’m glad he has some sass back lol (CW: some upsetting animal imagery):

There is nothing wrong in this relationship. Everything is Eliza’s new favourite adjective—stunning. Everything is scrubbed with kitchen bleach, glittering like a plasticky pool float in the shallow end, stunning. Everything is planned, put in a calendar, a notebook, a flitter of receipts, but always planned, stunning. Everything is better, even better than better, a better that can only be described as stunning.

Lonan uses this word frequently now, rolling out a strip of blue painter’s tape and trying to find different ways it stuns. Sticks when he sticks, peels when he peels, keeps its edge when it needs to keep its edge, so it’s stunning. The bubble television is turned onto a channel about sheep, and as he lines the baseboards, outlets, catches glances of a sheer buzzing against skin, sometimes a hunting knife slicing until there’s blood.

Eliza is asking a neighbour for paint rollers because they bought four cans of wall paint, two paint trays, a box of garbage bags, three rolls of painter’s tape, and a small paintbrush each for both of them but forgot the rollers. Stunning.

The following excerpt highlights that Lonan has a cellphone! Is Fostered just a bizarre alternate reality of a time period that doesn’t exist? Perhaps! (CW: some upsetting animal imagery):

Today, they’ll prime the cabinets, the walls, and tomorrow, scroll a coat of red onto both. The kitchen will look more like the inside of an anatomical heart, the sinks and drawers like ventricles, but this is Eliza’s vision—her tastes come alive.

The sheep are being herded by a collie. As Lonan rips another strip of tape with his teeth, he stares at the screen mounted in the corner, at the almost-naked sheep dashing across a field. How many will be slaughtered, he doesn’t know. The narrator must’ve said that, but there is no plan, really, for death. Even for sheep.

He kneels toward the kitchen vent, the tape roll linked around his wrist, and smooths a line of tape down. Eliza doesn’t want to paint the vent—it wouldn’t complete her vision—and so it will remain the original wall colour, a square of cream so worn, it’s almost grey.

Here we have some hints at Eliza’s weirdness:

He straightens and looks at her. She’s bundled in her fur coat even though she has always insisted she’s good at even Vegas’ warm winter. Since going vegetarian, she’s insisted it’s fake, even though he’s read the lining tag—100% mink. He doesn’t know why she’s needed her coat when she’s only walked up a few flights of stairs but doesn’t care to ask.

She approaches him with her thumb out, and when that thumb presses into his eye socket, he flinches.

“What happened here?” she smooths the dip of his under eyes, her fingertips cold. He smells her perfume, different today, always different, a smell like cloves and lavender. “Are you sleeping?” She presses onto her toes, examines the other side, and her frown deepens. “This doesn’t look like eight hours.”

“I’m sleeping,” he says, though they both know this is a lie. It’s taken her two weeks to notice.

“I can run to the pharmacy,” she says. “If you need a refill.”

“I’m sleeping.”

“I didn’t notice this morning—I would’ve given you another energy shot.”

Here’s a line I like because of a) skin and b) sun:

Lonan goes nowhere. This is not his plan. Asphalt whips under the skin of each tire, the setting sun wringing him blind.

Fully sharing this for the verb zags (and also because I accidentally roast cities tho I love them I am one of these blink-less people):

He doesn’t know where he’s going. Arizona is the only thing he knows about her, doesn’t know if she lives in an apartment, a duplex, a house—fully detached, semi-detached. As he pulls into a residential neighbourhood somewhere along the vague line he’s drawn on the map from Las Vegas to Arizona, he watches for all these options. In the distance, a jogger zags across the street with her golden retriever, children play basketball on a driveway, still in their school uniforms, another woman clips the wilted stems off a magnolia bush.

It’s when he gets closer to the apartments that the sameness is noticeable. High-rises with pearlescent windows that go pinkish in the sunset—all of them identical. Each building evenly spaced, more like a board game than a place to live. Even the space around each building is the same—the same rose hedges, the same iron fence, the same people bustling in and out, all wearing some variation of the same pantsuit, all holding some other hand—child, partner, lover. The same haircuts, smiles, eyes like marbles, as if there’s a store somewhere that sells copies, a catalogue for eyes that don’t blink. He’s been looking into the sun for too long, there must be a difference, but the longer he looks, the more indistinguishable they become.

To get out of explaining where he wants to go when he and Eliza bump into each other, Lonan says he’s visiting his sister (Reeve), and because she’s iconic and must make an appearance, here’s a line ft. our queen:

He could make the lie true. Reeve is somewhere in the country, he imagines, dancing in a faceless city, living in a motel room, tipping everyone well.

(^^ all true)

Here we have Lonan identifying with the animals more than anything else for the second time in one chapter (TW for more blood imagery):

Lonan hooks the car keys onto the lanyard by the front door and slings his coat across the couch. The television is set to the same channel as before, though the program has switched from sheep slaughter to birdwatching. On screen, a heron perches by a riverbed, opalescent in the sunshine.

“Did you hurt yourself?” he asks, the heron now frisking up the white bark of a tree. He glances at the fluorescent red dripping between her fingers, pattering against the tile.

“I was opening the paint cans.”

“With a kitchen knife?”

He gestures to the blade on the counter, blood-free, newly sharpened.

“It’s all I had on hand.” She pulls her wrist closer to her, runs her index finger along the injured area.

“It’s clean.”

“I washed it, Lonan.”

This next one has some blood imagery so TW for that!

The heron has moved closer to the riverbed. It watches the water knowingly, its subtle simmer of movement, and after a moment of watching, strikes its beak down so it spears a trout. He misses the part where it eats. Eliza’s clicked off the TV from behind him.

She slams the remote onto the counter so hard, its back clatters off and onto the tile. “I cut my arm with a kitchen knife while opening paint cans. It happens.”

“I don’t see a cut.”

“Why would I make that up?”

“I don’t see a cut.”

She walks toward him. He expects her to shove her wrist in his face, but she doesn’t. She just holds it, some of the blood fluorescing pink, splashes onto her toes.

“You got to see your sister?” she asks.

“She cancelled.”

Eliza clucks her tongue, examining her wrist, and then she extends her arm, revealing the full patch of pale skin gone red.

Lonan takes it, and with his fingernail carves a line through the red to reveal the healthy patch of skin, painted, uncut.

And finally, here’s the last line of this excerpt that essentially explains where the title comes from ft. predator VS prey symbolism:

He’s reminded once more of the heron, how it plunged into the riverbed with ease, and the trout dangling in its beak, its commitment to life most fervent the moment before being consumed.

So that’s going to be it for this update! I don’t know how frequently I’ll be writing this, but it’s been a lot of fun so far. I’m excited to explore more relationships I haven’t turned over in a while as a little side project while I do other things! Hope y’all enjoyed!

hey !! by any chance do you know if philodendron are C3, C4 or CAM plants?? i'm writing a paper and i literally can't find any good sources. if you know any good writing on philodendrons pls can you send it my way? thank u

hmmm….i’m going to guess C3, just out of the process of elimination. C4 has evolved independently over 40 times if i remember correctly, but a large percentage of that diversity is grasses evolved for wide prairies and grasslands where it’s hot and sunny as hell. CAM is generally in succulents and desert plants focusing on conserving water (unless you’re isoetes or a few other aquatic plants, in which case you’re doing this process because CO2 in the surrounding water is most readily available at night and burns off during the day, so there’s no real point in keeping your stomates open). overall, to be fair i don’t know much about philodendrons, but after a brief google search they seem to be shade plants, which means that just by speculation they would probably be fine with just C3 (not in an overly hot + humid + sunny environment and not aquatic or conserving water).

fun fact, all that being said, if you can’t find any papers about it, it’s very possible that nobody’s like, actually asked that question and then gone in to see what kind of photosynthesis they’re actually doing. in plant anatomy the most well-studied plants are the ones that can be used for human stuff, so crops and shit, which means that other plants just kind of….get ignored, so we like, straight up don’t have basic data for a WIDE variety of stuff like that. even house plants might only have stuff initially describing the species and providing industry-related breeding info. what are the anatomical details of the non-problematic-or-monetarily-exploitable plants in your backyard beyond ‘this is a grass, grasses usually grow x way’ or ‘this is a vine, vines usually have x kinds of tissues in cross section’? we just dont know its a mystery

OKAY but I kind of love the thought of Stark and Potts being old acquaintances in college?? Just a small idea I've thought about but-

They meet in Harvard. She remembers, but he doesn't seem to. It's not a good time for either of them, so Potts doesn't blame him entirely.

LOOK I'm just gonna say it

It's very obvious Potts has a thing with work. Where she let's her job work her over instead of the other way around. She's a self-made woman, she's on her own, and she's deathly terrified of disappointing her parents even if they let her know that's all she ever did.

Her father doesn't believe in her, of course. He doesn't hit her, he's never hit her, but he never had to. His words hurt more. He gives her a condescending smile that feels sharper than her mother's backhand.

Her mother, who did hit her. Her mother's weak like that.

" I give you one week."

Her mother married in riches. When Potts tells her she wants to go to university, she gets a laugh in the face and cigarette smoke in her eyes. "Why be a CEO when you can just marry one, dummy?"

Then, the money come. And she's suddenly worthy of the scraps of attention they dangled in her face for so long. It hurts, and it's terrible, because she knows without the money from college they wouldn't even spit on her if she was on fire.

She's not the boy they wanted, after all.

The circumstance of their meeting is less than savory, and it makes bile prickle at her tongue when she remembers.

Potts is pressured by her mother to attend some college party that she doesn't find enticing, because getting blackout wasted and high may be fun for some, but it's not her scene. Really, she'd rather break her leg than go on that scene. But her mother's friend happens to have a spoiled brat of a daughter whose mother will implode if her precious baby girl is not worshipped and guarded by EVERYONE

"Spent time with the girl, Virginia. Maybe you'll learn a thing from her. " She looks at the girl, Sunset's her name, ironically, who helps some washed-up quarterback roofie a freshman and thinks, "I'd rather fucking die. " The "ship of their friendship" sinks with her report to the police and dean. Potts sneers 'Good riddance.'

She finds the guy they were trying to roofie is Stark. Tony Stark. The heir of the Stark conglomerate, the Titan's son, the poster child for everything wrong with college but hopeful for the youth. She helps him to the dorms because Stark's sweet, more sensitive than people realize, and its heartbreaking that her kindness is such a marvelous but foreign concept for him.

He's a kid, it's the detail that truly pierces her heart to acknowledge, a kid theusted in a territory where he's defenseless, with no one to guard or protect him. He's less than 19, a bit younger than her, but he falls heavy on Pott's much smaller body, shaking with effort as she carries him to his door room.

"I miss my mamma, " something warm simmers in her chest at hearing that. Perhaps something so endearing shouldn't be said with that deep, rich voice, warm and molten and a tad bit scratchy, yet Potts can't help but find it adorable. "And my dad. Voglio andare a casa. "

"I'm sure Mr. Stark misses you too." Potts, in truth, thinks Howard Stark is more of an asshole than the anatomical term, but she keeps that in. But it seemed like the more compassionate, - more appropriate, really, thing to say.

Stark either snorts, scoffs, or makes a combination of the two noises. "Was talkin' 'bout Nick."

She doesn't know who that is, but she'd like to meet him one day. Stark's soft, muddled ramblings following them to the dorm rooms, make him sound like a good man, and she needs more of those in her life.

For a moment, her body freezes, when Stark atops and croaches down to her level, thinking he's aiming for her lips. Stark leans in to kiss her on the cheek and thanks her for not hurting him.

Potts wants to fight the world.

Later that week, a rumor that she slept with Tony Stark breaks in the university and the girls give her HELL. Suddenly, her clothes go burning, her food goes missing, her homework and assignments are victims of "Accidents". Nothing is to be done because the girls cry almost immediately in presence of authority and Pott's the bad guy at the end. (Pepper always strikes me as the person who got bullied in High School strangely???)

She's locked out of the dorm room one night, when it's cold as all hell, she's hungry, and she has her big breakout economic paper to work on. Her key doesn't work because it's a junk copy they replaced without her knowledge. The giggles bleeding through the door fill her with red blinding and she stomps off in the science lab to sleep.

She calls her father about it and gets an exhausted sigh. " Virginia. Don't call me for little girl problems. " Then hangs up without hesitancy, not a drop of concern, and Potts hates herself for it when tears roll on her cheeks because as her mother puts it, "Big Girls don't cry. We only cry when we break our necks, or if someone's dying." She's pretty close on the latter, so she thinks it's fair.

Stark finds her like that, shivering and sobbing on a dirty lab floor and hugs her like shes his lifeline. He apologizes like a mantra, promises that it'll be okay, and Potts nods, but her mind says ' I don't believe you.'

He brings Potts to his dorm, and decides to solve the problem no one else would.

Rhodes, Stark's friend from MIT, who does not care he's from an entire different college than them, instantly loves her and is furious on her behalf. He reminds Potts of the knight in shining armor breaking free from the fantasy books she would read as a child when no one else would, which makes him flush at the praise, and elbows Stark in the ribcage when he gushes about him.

She mistook Happy for a security guard at first, which makes both Rhodes and Stark howl, but the senior just laughs and doesn't let her go to sleep without eating. Stark helps her on her project with only mild shouting at Rhodes when he warns that they'll go into a coffee addiction at this point.

It's nice. They're nice. Their kindness keeps her going even if she knows it's more guilt.

The thing is, it's not just guilt.

They start to hang around her more, start to keep her company, invite her over to their dormroom which quickly becomes her favorite spot to be. They make her so happy she doesn't notice her parents haven't called her once, and, in her glee, she realizes she doesn't care.

Friendship is like honey. It tends to attract some flies.

Potts is pushed into the wall and she grinds her teeth together so she wouldn't wince because she isn't gonna give them the satisfaction. Push came to shove and she wants to shove back, - if she knew that fighting back meant all her progress would be gone because college is okay with harassment but not necessary violence.

The sorority girls call her everything under the sun and she fights back with words until she gives up once she realizes that it only entertains them and adds fuel to fire.

When she looks up finally, she sees the familiar shade of red of a MIT hoodie and Rhodes nonchalantly standing in front of her. Happy's not too many feet away, eyebrow arched comically high, hand prompted on his hip, and holding a camera in the other.

"Hit her again," Rhodes challanges them, stony faced, fearless and bold and DARING. He doesn't sound angry, that's the scariest part. He sounds gravely calm. "Call her what you did a minute ago. Have at it. I dare you. Bitch."

Her bullies break into something weak, something teary-eyed and fearful, pathetic and small. Rhodes says "that's what I thought " and helps her away.

All of the girls lose their scholarships the next day and Stark won't say anything, but he can't stop smiling.

Their roads meet crossed ends at the end of her graduation, - He goes back to MIT after Howard, the only reason Stark attends what the "smartest man in America" considers a low level school, cracks and gives him funding again.

They're her boys, - she remembers them as such, and they still stay that way, be it because they're phantoms in the snapshots of her life or standing just a few pinches of distant from her.

Years flow like a river in the course of time, she realizes, not at all slow, because they're not touched by aging. Happy may have less hair, but his smile is as blinding as ever and his snarky comments stay playful on the tip of his tongue. It takes exactly a week before Rhodes recognizes her. His surprise doesn't show, but his happiness does, and that's all that Potts needs. She smiles wider than normal when they banter like they used, regaining the footing of two teenagers with bright futures and too much sarcasm for safety.

"Dum-E! Come meet your mama. I can't wait to tell you how much he's gushed about you for the past decade. It's so embarrassing, I can't wait-"

She loves Maria the minute they meet. She's the mother Potts never had, the parent she should have gotten, because everyone deserves a Maria Stark in their life and she'll put that in stone. "Thank you for caring about my boy, '' she smiles gently at Potts as she wraps a blanket around her shoulders in a late all-nighter at SI, where she's droppy, and all she wants to do is dream. "You're a strong one. It can be rotten work."

Potts hums. "Not for me."

It's a random day, when the coin drops for Stark. He just freezes after Potts drops some documents on his desk with a small smile and a "Do you still play D&D on Saturday's?"

Long minutes pass as Potts walks off. She hears a "WAIT A FUCKING SECOND" sneaking through the half-closed door of Stark's office and she can't help but cackle.

9. what is their favourite colour? favourite animal?

wren — he’s a Monochrome Person in general; black, greys, white, All Good and 99% of his wardrobe, but his Favourite is silver. he’s not an animal person, particularly, so he likes things that are Quiet, keep to themselves and don’t make a fuss, and don’t require a lot of work to take care of. he’d say his favourite is a grey currawong, purely because that’s what his familiar sable is and sable is An Acceptable Animal, but corvids in general really Hit His Aesthetic (even though they’re absolutely not quiet.) mae — mae just loves Colour in general. bright shades, jewel tones, anything vivid and vibrant, but their favourites are definitely pinks and purples. there’s a very specific kind of shade i associate with them, which is this, so i’ll go with that in particular. as for animals, once again they just love Animals In General, but they have a particular weakness for butterflies, chipmunks, and squirrels. persephone — sunny & warm colours are her thing: yellows, oranges, golds, occasionally some reds and browns. her favourite animals are monarch butterflies and tigers.

13. what do they do for fun?

wren — wren..... fun...... unrealistic. he is Definitely work-focused and is not generally a ‘kick back and take a break’ kind of person, but honestly he enjoys his work enough that it... could probably count as something he does for fun. most of his interests are related to it, too, and if you asked him what he does for fun those are probably what he’d tell you about; he’s fascinated by anatomy and biology, and he has at least some knowledge in pretty much every field of science he’s aware of. he does read a lot; he’s not generally a fiction guy (though he’ll occasionally delve into classic literature, particularly if it’s recommended to him), but he likes non-fiction, textbooks and sometimes autobiographies — he sees it as both a hobby and as an educational pastime, so it’s the best of both worlds to him. he sketches sometimes, but more for work (e.g. anatomical diagrams) than for fun, though he Is pretty good at it as long as he’s keeping to greyscale line drawings. he’s also VERY into languages (he’s fluent in six, and can hold a conversation in three others), which also falls into the ‘both interesting and useful’ category, particularly once he starts travelling with julian post-game. mae — mae is a huge huge art person. they place a Big emphasis on creativity & individuality, and that definitely shows through in their hobbies — if you’ve known mae for longer than a day, you will know about their love of art and fashion. they like painting, drawing, clothing design, interior design, sewing, whatever they can physically get their hands on. they’re the kind of person who’ll buy clothes from thrift stores that no one else wants and alter them to the point where they’re unrecognisable, dress them up and put their own spin on them. they also refuse to let their love of art become a job or a chore to them; they definitely put more focus on fun and originality than they do on getting things ‘right’ or perfect. they love creating new things from scratch, and taking pre-existing things and making them feel fresh. persephone — she’s also pretty into painting, but purely as something fun that she can laugh over, almost always with portia — she’s not great at it, and she’s more likely to fling paint at a canvas than she is to come out of it with a coherent picture, but she loves it and that’s all that matters to her. she also loves baking, and gardening is a big thing with her; it’s Very common for her to come home with her hands dirtied from planting & tending to things in the gardens, and she’ll just tell you that it’s evidence of hard work and something new flourishing to life. she’s also something of a cryptid among my characters in that she actually likes sports — she’s athletic and she likes to stay fit and active, and she’s competitive enough to challenge people to contests over it to motivate herself too.

25. what is their biggest flaw?

wren — it’s definitely his blunt honesty. it’s necessary sometimes, and some people appreciate it, but it just Does Not Turn Off. sensitive people don’t do great with him; he doesn’t sugarcoat, and he hates lying, so he’ll tell the truth regardless of whether you want to hear it or not, and he won’t do it in a round-about gentle way either. another one is his tendency to isolate himself; this lessens Greatly by the end of the game, thanks to meeting julian and bonding with the others over time, which is why i went with his bluntness instead of this, but pre-game he was pretty much always holed away inside, obsessing over work and didn’t particularly have any friends aside from asra, and even that was more a friendship of circumstance on his side than it was anything more solid. mae — hm, there were a few different things i debated going with, but i think i’ll go with their worry over what people think. they’re not particularly insecure, but they definitely were in the past, and it took a lot of work and a lot of self-development for them to get to a place where they’re as confident and secure in themselves as they are now, but that self-consciousness does still linger a little bit. they’re a very friendly person, and their way of trying to befriend people often involves a lot of talking and a lot of over-familiarity (they’ll be hugging you five minutes after meeting you), and sometimes that’s a little much for people. they’re very aware of that, and they know they can be Too Much sometimes, so they spend a lot of their interactions consciously trying to tone it down and hold themselves back and worrying about whether they’re overstepping boundaries and driving the other person away. they’ve been in a couple of bad relationships, too, where it was made pretty clear to them that people saw them as fun in the short-term but annoying and overbearing in the long-term, and that does weigh on them more than other people tend to think. persephone — her impulsivity. it’s not always evident, and she Is capable of self-control; she’s pretty aware of when something is a bad idea, and she’s often the one holding other people back from making stupid decisions. however, she’s very emotional, and very driven by her heart, and paired with her stubbornness that means that if something happens that really angers her or fires her up, she tends to act on her gut response, charging in head-first, and it can lead her to be pretty reckless.

27. what is their biggest strength?

wren — his intelligence. his mind is sharp and quick, and he’s a fast learner, so there’s honestly not a lot he doesn’t know (and what he doesn’t know he’ll figure out in a heartbeat). i’d actually hazard saying he’s probably my most book-smart oc overall, from any fandom. mae — probably their charisma. it’s not charisma in the way that they’ll intentionally try to charm you, but they have this sort of presence and aura that generally means they have a lot of friends and a pretty easy window to interaction with people. it’s a very genuine kind of vibe, and they probably don’t even know this is a trait of theirs, but this (paired with their Persistent Friendliness) is what draws most people in. persephone — her courage. it’s the flipside of her weakness; because she’s so powered by her heart, she’s passionate, loyal, and always ready to jump in to defend. she stands up for what she thinks is right, and she’s honestly pretty fearless. if you’re in a haunted house, she’ll be the one in the front, laughing in the face of everything that happens and reassuring you when she sees that you’re scared.

78. who do they consider to be their best friend?

wren — well, the closest people to him aside from julian would be portia and mazelinka, but they’re family to him, rather than friends. so, excluding them, it’d have to be nazali. they share many of the same interests, and have the same background in medicine, so they like to get together and share theories and experiences. nazali’s just the right kind of person to appeal to him; they’re level-headed, sensible, and honest, with a dry thread of snark to them that he appreciates. mae — it’s a pretty even tie between asra and portia. they Very much love asra (they had something of a crush on him back when they first met, but it’s settled into platonic affection by now), and they honestly wouldn’t know what to do without him; they owe him so much, all of their returned magical skills and for taking care of them while they recuperated. they love hearing his stories when he comes back from travels and they soak up every piece of new knowledge he can give them. as for portia, it was a bit of a relief to have such a friendly face around when they first got to the palace — they didn’t exactly feel out of their depth, but it was all very new and unfamiliar and they Really weren’t used to having to navigate courts and upper classes and Banquets With The Countess, so having someone who was more ‘on their level’ and acted less impersonally drew them in like a moth to a flame. portia’s mischievous streak Delighted them (they loved sneaking around with her to explore the palace on their first night there), and they love just hanging around with her at her cottage and learning all of the #Gossip she overhears, as well as all of those secret passageways she maps out. persephone — probably asra. nadia’s a close second (she Loves nadia, and she’d admired her from afar long before she knew her), but asra has been the one person at her side through thick and thin for the past few years, and it’s earned him her undying loyalty. she’s admittedly a little salty he never takes her with him on his journeys (he knows she loves adventure), but she tries Very Hard to be understanding, and as it turns out she’s pretty good at finding adventure on her own.

Designiest Design

EDIT 11/8/19: The results are in; my design is one of the winning 5!! Thank you so much to everyone who voted, even if you didn't vote for mine! Congratulations to the other winners, and thank you to Culture Hustle for the contest opportunity! EDIT 10/16/19: Culture Hustle has picked their 10 favorite Designs for the contest, and I'm number 9! You can vote for which of the 10 selected you'd like to see as one of the 5 winners over on their Facebook Page OR over on their Instagram! I can't wait to see who the winners are, even if my design isn't one of them. ____ What a world where I'm uploading two contest art pieces back to back This time the contest is hosted by a company called CultureHustle, which is in cahoots with an artist named Stuart Semple, over on their Facebook and Instagram Pages. The details this time around were infinitely less specific than they were for my Nightlights in the Deep piece, so I had infinitely more room to play with ideas, which as any artist knows can be a bit of a double-edged sword. The goal of the contest is to design a cover for their product called the "sketchiest sketchbook" and...that's it. They give a deadline (October 1st) and tell you there'll be five winners and what they're going to do with the design, but that's really it. And honestly, it may be a head-scratcher to some, but to me this comes across as a very fitting way to do it, considering the attitude the company portrays on their website. (Go check it out some of the product descriptions or the About page and I promise you'll see what I mean.) I originally came up with two concepts, both pretty similar and very inspired by the company's vaguely "fight the power" impression and spunk, as well as their origin story. (The short version is that another artist claimed all the rights to the blackest material on the planet for their personal use only and Stuart Semple, as well as many others, didn't like that, so Stuart went into making his own "x-iest x" art products that are available to everyone except the aforementioned blackest-black hog.) So pretty right away my color choices were pretty obvious; Black for Culturehustle's own attempts to make the blackest black paints as well as a nod to the origin of the company, and the pink, blue, green, and yellow after their Powder Paint Pigments: Pinkest Pink, Loveliest Blue, Greenest Green, and Yellowest Yellow, which seem to be more of their claim to fame at the moment. I also would end up adding in a few hand-drawn sparkles to reference their "Most Glittery Glitter" that is actually glass and sounds very cool but I personally would be terrified to use it for fear of getting all that teeny tiny glass in places it shouldn't be. My concepts from the very beginning were kind of all hand-and-magic themed, the hands representing more or less the "hands of the hardworking artist" and the magic...well, that's the art the hands create, of course. The other concept I came up with I was having an excruciatingly hard time finding references for the position of the hand, so that was what ultimately pushed me to this one instead. So we have the hands of the artist, the black void of nothingness, and then the bursting colors and valued tools that fuel the fire of creative inspiration. And while originally I thought of doing completely clean digital lines, while I was working it really felt like the sketchy/rough lines contrasted really nicely with the more rigid solids of the black and the color lines, and it kinda fits with the idea of a sketchbook cover a little better, so I went that route instead. I also kept the less refined shading on the hands since I ended up really liking the way it looked next to the rest of the design. Although I do have to disclose that the hands aren't anatomically correct as far as positioning goes; technically speaking both thumbs should be on the same side (try posing your hands this way for yourself if you don't believe me). But I tried doing that a few different ways, and it just doesn't look as good. The balance feels a lot better to the eyes of the thumbs/positions are opposite. So in the name of having a more attractive design over a more accurate one, I made the executive choice to just let them be opposite. (And admittedly there's probably very few people that would've called me on that, but it was kind of interesting to me when I figured it out for myself so I thought it was worth mentioning.) This design ended up being a lot simpler to take through to completion once I had the concept nailed down than I thought it would be, and it was actually a lot of fun. Especially since I hadn't done much digital stuff lately; it was a nice little warmup to get back into the swing of things, I think. It's one of those pieces where less is more; I feel like there's a surprising amount of depth you could read into it, for as simple as it is. It’s APPRECIATION TIME babey

first on my list to the surprise of literally no one would be @emordnilap-fr my partner in crime. I’ve always admired her linework, the weighting and anatomy and just everything about it is fantastic. I still need to post my part of the collab we did so I can rave about how much fun it was to use her linework! It’s just so -clenches fist- very nice

@hungrytundras is another one of course. Llan’s got such a unique style with the way they apply texture it’s amazing. Plus, basically every piece of art he puts out has some sort of tie in with lore. The world building is amazing! The actual written lore itself is always so cool, ngl there’s plenty of ideas there I’ve worked into my own lore.

@nimrook-fr this is like your 5th ping for this but whatever. Echoing what everyone else has said, LOVE IT. 10/10. Very very nice. The lines and colour and shading is always so good, there’s a really nice atmosphere to every piece of art. The whole smoke thing which is seen so often is done really well too! It’s just always such pleasing art to look at (plus nim is a very nice and amazing person and is always a joy to talk to!)

@196794 I LOVE THIS ART A LOT. Their anthros are always great, and the way their characters interact is so dynamic and natural, I always enjoy seeing a new post. Plus the way they draw like... eyes and faces and the LIL WHISKERS is so pleasing and nice, I love it.

@frxemriss deserves a lot of appreciation for his stories! I used to go through and binge read a bunch of them hjksdhf they’re always really fun to read. Not just that, but can we get some appreciation for the lesser-discussed art that is bio coding? Cus xem? You’re amazing. I’ve coded a few bios myself and your talent at it is always inspiring.

@rexcaliburr-fr in a similar vein, rex makes super nice bios! I’m already using one of hers that she made specifically for this dragon and it’s so nice and clean and beautiful. She also does really nice art, and I love seeing it! It’s always so... fun looking. Like I look at it and I know those characters are having a funky time.

@brahkest-fr similar to nim, another big name in the FR community and for a GOOD REASON. I remember when they first started to make their appearance with a few pieces of art and they just suddenly blew up. The expressions, poses and general dynamics are always amazing, plus the very recognizable style is super nice!

@fr-ari a great artist and a great person! Their art always has this professional illustration vibe to it, like I’d see it in a book. Whiiich makes sense considering they do professional stuff hkjsdhf. The poses are always really awesome and fluid and defy expectations while still making total anatomic sense. Plus, peffer is always adorable :3

@auries-fr SHOULD BE TALKED ABOUT MORE. SHE’S AMAZING. I’ve always loved how unique her style is. Linework is def the centerpeice of her art, it’s always so stunning and amazing. It works so well with the way she colours and shades. Plus the expressions are so LOUD and fun, it’s always really fun art to look at!

@hatandclogsart REALLY REALLY REALLY deserves more love. I’ve commissioned over 15 pieces from them already. Do I show any sign of stopping? Nope not at all. They’re such a seriously talented artist with a unique and enjoyable art style. Looking at their art just makes me feel nice and good inside. I love it.

Because of how long it is and how very excited you all have been waiting for this we have decided to post it into 2 parts to keep the excitement going. 1. “Knew he was a killer” – you and a friend or significant other dress up as a killer and their victim (not to scary or realistic though! Just have fun with it)

2. “Left haunted” – could make a fun sign saying “Taylor left me haunted” or something silly with the word haunted! Could even use Haunted (Speak Now) lyrics!

3. “But if he’s a ghost, then I can be a phantom” – Few ideas:

→ Two people could dress up as ghosts.

→ Could also dress up as Danny Phantom because of the wordplay, or even the Phantom of the Opera if you wanted to be clever.

→ Could also dress up as ghost hunters/ghost busters.

4. “Holdin’ him for ransom” – dress as bank robbers! Could even copy the outfits from the vault scene in LWYMMD.

5. “I keep him forever, like a vendetta-ta” – Poster that replaces him for Taylor, so it says I keep Taylor forever, like a vendetta-ta.

6. “Island breeze and lights down low” – maybe dress tropical—think family vacation ha.

→ Could even improvise a poster that instead of saying island it could say (city name) breeze and stadium lights down low. Ex: “Boston breeze and stadium lights down low” (yes, I know its FOXBORO, but we all know Taylor just calls it Boston lol).

7. “In the middle of the night” – Dress as if you’re the night sky, glow in the dark ceiling stars or tape on a black/navy blue outfit with glitter. A matching poster in the shape of a star or a moon would be the perfect pairing.

8. “Are you ready for it?” – Poster with these lyrics on it. Remember posters can be as simple or as creative as you’d like. If you have a large enough group, you could make giant cutouts and hold two letters or so each.

9. “Stealing hearts and running off..” – A poster in the shape of a heart (not anatomical) with the lyrics on it.

10. “He can be my jailer” – Cop and Robber costume, could do the orange jumpsuit from the LWYMMD video and copy the “guards” around the birdcages outfits.

→ Could dress as a referee/sport player/some sort of sport reference

I DID SOMETHING BAD:

1. “I play ‘em like a violin” – Make a poster cut out into the same of a violin and wear music notes.

2. ‘Now all he thinks about is me” – Poster saying “Now all I think about is Taylor”

3. “I can feel the flames on my skin” – Body paint flames in your arms/legs or wear flame pattern shirt.

4. “Crimson red paint on my lips” – Could be similar to the one above from End Game with red lips all over your outfit or a poster.

5. “If a man talk shit, then I owe him nothing” – Great lyric for a poster! Don’t want to put the swear on the poster? Get creative and maybe use the emoji covering its mouth or symbols!

6. “I never trust a playboy, but they love me” – Going with a guy friend? Could have him dress like Hugh Hefner but of course remember the necessary clothing needed to get into a venue if you do this! Could also dress as a bunny (playboy related or just average you decide)

7. “So I fly ‘em all around the world” – Going to multiple shows? Make a poster of a globe with airplanes landing on each tour stop you’re going to!

8. “They’re burning all the witches even if you aren’t one” – Dress as a witch, could be inspired from the Salem witch trials, could be a cartoon-y Halloween one, or one from your favorite show or movie that involves witches!

9. “Pitchforks and proof, their receipts and reasons” – Poster in the shape of a pitchfork or one that looks like a store receipt or screenshotted iMessage but using Taylor lyrics as the messages or purchases!

10. “Light me up” – Most shows apparently will not allow lights but doesn’t mean you can’t light up with glow sticks, glow in the dark body paint/outfits or glitter!

11. “Most fun I ever had” – Poster saying “Taylor Concerts are the most fun I ever had!”

DON’T BLAME ME:

→ Poster that spells out poison ivy in plastic (or real or drawn completely up to you) poison ivy.

6. “Fall from grace” – Michael and Lucifer, so aka could go as a fallen angel or the devil. If you watch Supernatural then you can pull from that for inspiration!

7. Taylor related this song to church, love and drug use because those 3 are powerful enough to change a person. Dressing up as if you’re in a choir could fit this song! Even something church related, however trying to remain neutral with that can be difficult.

8. Some people get a Fifty Shades of Grey vibe from this song, do what you may with that.

DELICATE:

1. Poster spelling out delicate with an assortment of colorful fake flowers.

2. “You can make me a drink” – Poster cut out in the shape of a wine glass with the lyrics being written in a bold, thick font and place to look as if from far away its wine drawn in the glass.

LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO:

1. “I don’t like your little games” – See similar ideas for game inspired outfits above, OR

→ Make an outfit featuring miniature games attached to you, like Tamagotchi’s or make your own mini monopoly/life/etc. boards and glue them onto your outfit or poster. Possibly break the little boards in half and have broken pieces to represent not liking them.

2. “Of the fool” – Could dress up as a fool/clown. Silly, whimsical costume.

3. “Said the gun was mine” – Could do a poster of a smoking gun with the lyrics looking like they came out of the gun/the toy guns where flags pop out.

4. “Rose up from the dead” – Zombie! Tombstone poster!

5. “I’ve got a list of names and yours is in red, underlined” – List of names—Taylor related, maybe her cats or not—but have them all crossed out besides for Taylors at the bottom.

6. “I check it once, then I check it twice” – Some say this reminds them of Santa so by all means feel free to dress up Christmas-y.

7. “Look what you made me do” – Use the lyric video to create cool posters.

8. “I don’t like your kingdom keys” – few ideas:

→ Outfit with keys drawn on, make them look vintage and old, wear crowns with this look! Could also have keys dangling off the ends of the outfit.

→ Giant gold key posters, make them look novelty like the ones cities give to honor people.

16. “The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now” - Poster using a picture of the “old Taylor” and a poster in the shape of a phone! Could incorporate the Our Song video, WANEGBT video, or the Look video when she’s on a phone.

SO IT GOES…

1. “See you in the dark” – Poster where the word Dark is written in glow in the dark paint/marker to show up after the lights go down!

2. “All eyes on you” – Outfit with googly eyes glued all over it. Or create a poster with the same idea and the lyrics changed to “All eyes on Taylor”

→ Add “my magician” if you wish to the end of the poster lyric or combine the googly eyes theme with a magician costume.

3. “My magician” – Multiple options:

→ Dress up in a magician’s costume, this can be traditional, or you can be as creative as you want with it.

→ Poster cut out to look like you’re holding a fan of cards (think trick magician’s deck) with any lyrics from the song written on it.

→ Could dress up as a magician’s assistant.

→ Dress up as a rabbit/bunny (stereotypically used in acts)

→ Poster in the shape of a bunny peeking out of a magician’s hat, or just the ears sticking out of the hat, with so it goes lyrics on it.

→ Poster of a crystal ball with “all eyes on you, my magician” written in it.

4. “You make everyone disappear” – “Taylor makes everyone disappear” written on a poster. Possibly write it in glow in the dark ink so it only shows when the lights are down and not before!

5. “Cut me into pieces” – Puzzle piece posters! You and a group of friends can each hold a piece that fits into the other and each can have one word of a line from any reputation song or simply use the “cut me into pieces”

6. “Gold cage, hostage to my feelings” – 2 options:

→ Make a cut out poster in the shape of a cage, individual cut out in between each bar so it’s open, do two sides like this and attach strings to wear the sign so it looks like the cage is around you. Could even wear this with the orange jumpsuit outfit from the Look video!

→ Poster in the shape of a gold bird cage with “hostage to my feelings” written inside of it.

7. “All our pieces fall right into place” – Poster with confetti, puzzle pieces, hearts either drawn on or glued. Either place or draw the pieces to spell out the lyrics as they fall down to a pile at the bottom of the poster paper or just have the pieces you decide to use “raining” down halfway through the poster and have the lyrics on the bottom half.

8. “So it goes…” Poster with these lyrics.

9. “Met you in a bar” – 2 options:

→ Poster drawn and cut out like a whiskey bottle with these lyrics, Taylor and reputation written on the label.

→ Using half of a poster board, draw what looks like a bar top (typically mahogany) with bottles either laying or standing across it and a few shot glasses, each bottle could be named after a song on the album!

10. “All eyes on us/All eyes on you/All eyes on me” - Staring eye emoji drawn on a poster with a thought bubble above it with one of these 3 lyrics in the bubble.

11. “I make all your grey days clear” –

→ One person dresses up as a cloudy/rainy day so all grey clothes and have reflective blue tape cut into rain drops and white reflective tape to represent clouds (typically clouds are grey/black when it’s raining but those two colors won’t be reflective, could use glow in the dark paint/tape as well). Could also wear a cloud poster with raindrops hanging from it on string around them or hold as a regular poster with these lyrics in the cloud.

→ Second person dresses up as sunny day, in preferably light blue to represent a clear sky, yellow reflective tape cut out as suns on the outfit—could even have some breaking through clouds using white reflective tape. Person could also wear a sun poster around them like suggested above for the grey day look.

12. “Wear you like a necklace” – Think flavor flav! Make a giant fake watch (or not a watch and just a necklace) out of string and cardboard. Have the reputation album cover or cd artwork be hanging from it/as the face of the watch.

13. “Dressed in black now” – Wear all black! Draw attention to yourself with some glow in the dark paint or stickers, glow sticks and glitter.

14. “Scratches down your back” – Might not be appropriate with what its referencing for younger crowds and you may get looks from parents but create a shirt with bloody scratches down the backside and let the front side have “so it goes…” written on it.

15. “You did a number on me” – Few options:

→ Poster cut out into a 13/22/1989 with the lyric written throughout the 13/22/1989.

→ Poster with an array of numbers related to Taylor filling it (13, 22, 1989, 10(Grammys), etc.). Write the lyrics in rep font first and draw the numbers around it, filling the background. Write in glow in the dark paint/tape, glue flowers over the lyrics, whatever you desire! Can even just use the word rep instead of doing the lyrics.

→ Idea above for the poster could also work on a shirt.

→ Poster with the number of shows you’re attending.

16. “Who’s counting?” – See the ideas for the lyric above, they work well with this one as well.

***I can’t believe there are still 4(!) months left until the show and more importantly until Malec is back. Honestly, who tf thought that bringing the show back in April was a good idea? I just wanna talk. Especially when seeing all these spoilers and teasers. This is really not helping here!
