I didn't follow any of the pre-release promotional materials; do you have a link to the showrunner(s) stating/implying that queerness is merely "subtextual" in the absence of literal sex? (Apologies if you've shared it before and I just wasn't paying attention.) Also, thank you for your prolific and thorough critiques. I'm a more casual book fan and was tentatively excited to see the show forge a new narrative path while still guided by the same lifeblood, if you will. But at this point, hmmmmmm

I haven't been able to stomach the entire SDCC panel but I know they talked about it in there, I kinda peeked around for a transcript but didn't find one. ANYONE FEEL FREE TO SHARE THE DIRECT QUOTES please I don't have the strength. There's a summary article here, though, which touches on the convo a little:

That interview is full of nonsense that will make you want to scream if you're feeling brave.

Anyway I feel like, I've been obsessively watching the production unfold for the past year and I kept getting so many red flags like there's been so many odd comments and little sexist quips, the complete misunderstanding (or lack of fucks) about what Claudia is supposed to mean in the story, etc. I just keep getting aggressive CISHET MAN vibes from this team and the lens they read VC through.

And yknow what, fair whatever I guess, we all read different versions of the same book and they're the ones that got to make it. But idk I like VC for the dark elegant spooky existential angst, I didn't need it to be gritty and open up with shit jokes. And five episodes in I didn't need it to use outdated, dangerous rape tropes and I also don't need it to oversell the domestic abuse. (Hint: Lestat was already abusive as fuck from the moment we met him, don't oversell!)

It's an okay show lmao. It's not recognizable as VC at all except that it recycles the names. None of the characters have been accurate so far. Even Lestat, where Sam Reid is doing so many fun things with his delivery and mannerisms that almost seem like Lestat, is just so fucking OOC and a caricature and just really lacks the depth and nuance and sensitivity of who he is in the books.

If you can turn your brain off and not look at it as VC there's some fun moments, but it's also full of continuity errors and just plot holes and bad writing when you look too close, so don't try to analyze it too hard or you'll have a bad time lol. Even the stuff that's really interesting and that they get right, they tend to lose interest in and drop, or they mix it into so much vampire soap opera shenanigans that it's hard to walk away knowing what the episode is actually about. It's just. Woof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok honestly any rivusa shipper will enjoy the comics and their stories like as a child (I collected the comics from the debut issue and in the country I live every month they would realise a new issue so I’d buy the winx comics every month) I watched the show but the comics made me genuinely love the characters and their relationship ESPECIALLY rivusa and it’s honestly thanks to the comics they solidified their spot as my otp. I mean rivusa have a whole wiki section on the winx fandom wiki dedicated solely to their comic storyline and honestly it’s so iconic. They just have great moments (like I rmb there was one issue where Musa was panicking to look presentable while she was gonna go meet riven in magix city and once she got off the bus to meet him as he’s waiting at the bus stop there’s a whole frame of them holding each other and staring into each other’s eyes and he calls her beautiful😍😍😍 and in that issue when the girls ask about him there’s a whole frame of her heart eyes with hearts in the bg as she raves to the girls “riven is very sweet and kind when you get on his good side” like PLEASE YOUR HONOUR I LOVE THEM SO MUCH and I distinctly rmb from my childhood this issue where the winx and specialists get stranded on an island back In time and Musa and Brandon are knocked out cold and even tho there’s no dialogue riven is just carrying musa to safety bridal style🥺🥺 (I think this ig acc @/rivusa._ did this thing where they screenshotted the moment he carries her in the animated cartoon and in fate and the in the comics and put all 3 side by side and idk there’s smth so fulfilling and heartwarming knowing riven will always carry musa to safety when she needs it in every version of them😭) so yes if you ever have time please go read the comics it really made me love the winx franchise as a whole even more

I've been slowly reading the comics and I'm obsessed with their s1 interactions, tho I mostly open them to see if I can make thematic edits XD

It really shows how Riven is more interested in school stuff over dating, while Musa is easily swept up by crushes

It's really cute. Riven hears something maybe dangerous and he gives it his full focus and Musa is trying to flirt with him because she doesn't think it's dangerous

They have completely different priorities, which I think is a adorable way to keep them apart lol

Omg!! That must of been so much fun!!!

The comics actually involve the assassin's that Sky's family has been so scared of in the story and I'm really excited to see how it includes other details the show glossed over

I've always had this hc that before Musa and her dad start understanding each other, and her dad is still deathly terrified of Musa going the way of her mother if she joins the industry, Riven offers to help her get an apartment. Like no questions asked. You dad sucks? Let's help you move out. He didn't have a clear picture, Musa's dad is over protective the exact opposite of Riven's and he was projecting just a bit, but Musa was all like 🥰🥹 when he offered

this is for you!

i hope you like what i came up with even when i took some liberties with the prompt. you gave me so many options to choose from, so many good options, but ever since i first got this ask, i was fixated on that hozier line. it just seemed to fit beyond evil so perfectly and i was so excited to make something for that drama bc i never did back when i watched it. thank you so much for it! (and also special love for throwing spring day at me, it made me smile fondly ♥ maybe i'll end up using it when i find something fitting to use it for)

(more blabberings under the cut bc this edit made me think some thoughts!)

first of all, i have to admit that i have almost forgotten everything that happened in beyond evil. it's been over a year since i binged through it and it never stuck with me the same way as, let's say, the devil judge did. but i still found it super interesting and with this prompt, i came to think about the themes in it once more. i came to think about the story, and the world, and the people. most of all, the people.

bc, second of all, i am obsessed with the dynamic of our two main characters. they are like fire and ice, and they struggle to understand each other bc of it. joowon is young, righteous, hopeful, and naive. dongsik is older, has already seen the cruelty of the world, and knows how much it can hurt. but he has not given up, and instead, there is this plan and then –

well. joowon comes and messes it up. kind of. tho he also becomes dongsik's ally, and then comes to see how unfair the world can be, and watching all of this happen hurts dongsik who, until then, has not shied away from sacrifice. he has let the people around him be hurt. he has been selfish in that sense. and then this one person more threatens to tip him over.

so, i had thoughts. and then i somehow tried to put all of them into this edit: the differences between joowon and dongsik, their individual journeys, their joined moments. there's dongsik with his undying fire, the only thing left pushing him through as he loses, and loses, and loses again and again. there's joowon with his one goal: to serve justice. he's willing to try and reach this goal by any means necessary. he almost becomes blind to how impossible reaching it can be.

they both have their demons. dongsik's are vengeful, full of years-old rage. they're simmering somewhere behind his smiles and in his stern eyes and under the tears he so unwillingly sheds. he cannot tame them despite all the time that has passed. he doesn't want to.

and then there's joowon with his newly found demons, the ones that are out of his control, the ones that would like to drive a bullet into his father's chest or smash a golf club into his head. the demons that turn the calm and collected detective han into someone he didn't know he could be. the demons that are born out of his old and new grief.

the caption seemed to put all of this so nicely. it's one of dongsik's lines said to joowon. there's something scary about how far ppl are willing to go out of love and attachment. we're terrifying creatures once someone takes something we care about away from us.

i hope you didn't find my ramblings or the edit itself boring. i personally love the simplicity of it all. i haven't done anything black and white in a long while so this felt refreshing and fun.

Well, I have to do a review. You have to know that I literally shook all the way through my reading, I would have been so nervous in Yasuko's place.

« When you brush your hair after a shower or laugh at a meme, you imagine his violet eyes are watching. » this. My very definition of having a huge crush on someone, to the point where that person becomes an obsession (and how can you not be obsessed with Haitani Rindou ?) We littaraly saw them everywhere with us, watching us, talking with us.

Poor Yasuko, certain that he can't possibly be a yakuza... I can't wait to find out what her reaction will be when she learns it (if she learns it, but I guess so).

The discussion that starts almost timidly, when both parties are sizing each other up and discovering each other, then being more confiant, I live for that.

The way Rin talks about Ran, and the memories he shares with her, I've said it before, but I would die for their interactions in the first chapter.

« Sometimes, I think every good thing I have is bound to collapse, and that I should just submit to it, so maybe I find that resistance inspiring » I MEAN, CAN I STEAL THAT TOO ???

« We aren't going to be friends. » oh the way I giggled like a schoolgirl, I think I even BLUSHED.

absolutely, i think we all have a different definition of the absolute meaning of life but yeah i totally agree, being a good person day-to-day and putting out good vibes and karma into the universe is why we’re here for such a long time, it’s a long process with the smallest details and the biggest impacts.

what books do i like reading? recently i read seven husbands of evelyn hugo and i just bawled my way through it, it was divine. i’ve also been discovering some classics or “must be read at some point in a lifetime books that have made their way onto my tbr. daisy jones and the six was also a great read.

my current read is lucky by a woman who’s name i can’t remember 😅 it’s about a criminal on the run who wins the lottery but can’t cash her ticket in bc she will be jailed for all of her crimes. i’m only 8 chapters in at the moment but it’s pretty good so far.

seven titles on my tbr that i’m looking forward to read are the grapes of wrath, if beale street could talk, sharp objects, american psycho, mrs bridge, midnight library, and i’m glad my mom died which i know will break me when i get around to it haha.

do i have a wip? absolutely, for the past year or so i’ve been trying to write a book i’ve currently titled “ourselves” and it’s about five female friends who live in melbourne, australia who try to save a beloved family diner from breaking point and shutting down. i have a few other ideas for when i hopefully get ourselves written and on the bestseller list 😅 gonna be hard to do that seeing as i’ve only written one chapter of the book so far, but we take things slowly bc it’s a journey, it doesn’t need to be rushed. all the best things take time, right? rome wasn’t built in a day.

ITS SO EASY!!! goodreads is genuinely the best so user-friendly im obsessed with it

okay okay so apparently i made one a LONG time ago and ive only just started using it right now but its so!!!!! i quickly created a random account to see how it goes again so here we go!!

first u create an account basic things email, password so on. then it asks you for like making friends and setting a goal its rlly overwhelming at first so just skip it bc u can. next u choose ur favorite genres and then it asks u to rate some popular books? except i havent read any of them so i just clicked im finished and moved on. then u have ur account!

setting up ur like profile isn't necessary but i did like just my name, profile pic (which i think is amazing), and quick like 10 word description mine is so simple (goodreads is so nice they have like preset questions you can just answer and that will ALSO pop up in your description)

(there's a quote section too that only on desktop where you can fin quotes and like them and its fun i have like 6 but unnecessary so don't worry about it!!)

after this i just followed a bunch of authors of color and booktubers (also of color) i watch bc white content creators who? i only know people of color. no like im genuinely realizing i only watch content creators of color help good for me ig <3

.......which im realizing may have influenced my feed. i also added some mutuals from tumblr as friends which!!! add me if u make one!!!

the thing though is in order to get recs u have to have read books and like. rated them and BC all i read are poc written books, i get recs reflecting that but its super easy!!! u find a book (any of the ones ive talked about on tunglr will do and maybe i AM plugging my goodreads here shut up <3! <- that might help with finding some books) and rate it and the thing about goodreads is there's automatically a 'read', 'currently reading' and 'to read' bookshelf so u just click one of those and BAM! u have a bookshelf

u can also create new bookshelves, i have an authors of color one, a desi one, and a romances that are GOOD one and add on to those and have one book in more bookshelves and stuff

and likeokay so if u pull ONE book up they'll have like below it a 'similar to this book' and its everything bc say the book is a romcom by an asian author the similar books are ALSO mostly romcoms by asian authors goodreads is so <3333
