Roman smirks as he watches you shift awkwardly in your seat, trying to not let the slit of your dress show too much leg. You’re just a pawn that your gang is using to try and sweeten this deal and Roman knows it. He’s milking every moment of it.
“That offer is…tempting, sweetheart, but-“
“Take it or leave it, Sionis, I don’t have all day,” you snap.
Roman hates your attitude, always has, but God does he want to break it.
He rises from his seat at his desk and starts to walk to you, but you stand as well, not wanting to be intimidated by him. He just smirks and looks down at you. “Aw, look at you, trying to be all tough. Bet you hate that they got you all dolled up just for m-“
Your hand goes flying up toward his face for a slap, but he catches your wrist right before it makes contact.
Roman’s expression darkens, but your scowl remains. He leans in close to you and your heart starts to race. His gaze looks down to your cleavage where he can see the evidence of your soft shallow breaths.
“What’s the matter, sweetheart?” he purrs. “Do I make you nervous?”
You scoff. “Never.”
“Your pulse says otherwise.”
You realize he’s still holding your wrist and harshly tear yourself from his grasp making him chuckle as he straightens up.
“I’ll take the deal,” Roman says. “On one condition.”
“My Don won’t take any-“
“My condition isn’t for your Don.”
You raise a brow.
He leans against his desk and crosses his arms. “Let me take you to dinner. I know a great spot,” he says with a smirk.
“Not a chance in hell,” you reply with a roll of your eyes. You turn on your heel and start for the door.
“Think your Don will appreciate you going back empty handed?”
He’s got you there. Ugh, you hate how smug he sounds about it, too.
You can hear his footsteps as he gets close behind you. You don’t have to look behind you to know that his front is inches from your back. He leans down so his lips are next to your ear and he whispers, “Come on, sweetheart, one date.”
You sigh and whip around to look up at him with a frown as you hold up a stern index finger. “One date, Sionis.”
He grins. “Yeah, sure, just one. Just don’t come crying when you want seconds.”

Well, tonight had been a real shitshow. What was supposed to have been a quick clean-out turned out to be more than Roman had bargained for, the group of thugs encroaching on his turf backed up with some real killer artillery. Definitely not some run-of-the-mill gang looking to pick up some parking meter change; it had been a trap and Roman charged in with all guns blazing only to end up against a firing squad himself.
Kind of impressive actually, the simplicity of the scheme in which to draw Roman Sionis onto the street for an easy kill. Targeting his dealers and disrupting the flow of narcotics had been one thing but the joy of making an example out of the culprits, now they knew he'd find that irresistable.
Roman would have smiled had he still had the strength. Scarface knew him better than he knew himself, the vicious little wooden bastard.
However, Roman could only swallow, feeling oddly thirsty despite the strong taste of blood upon his tongue. He’s bleeding out fast and knows it, unable to repress a shudder at his impending demise. Then again it might have been his body beginning to convulse - already he could feel the cold, dark fingers of death reaching out for him like so many others had been claimed tonight.
Speaking of Death, the bastard was already hovering over his corpse.
It wasn't Scarface, much to his surprise. The odd, scratching voice that reached his dimming ears didn't carry the gloating words he'd been expecting, of luring him out onto his own turf that would now belong to him. Similarly the dark frame kneeling above his corpse wasn't chubby like the Ventriloquist Scarface had dubbed his puppet - this newcomer was thin and lanky, their silhouette so tall that overhead lights were blotted out, fanning behind the top of their head like some sort of nightmarish halo.
He'd never put much stock into religion but in that moment, it looked like an awful lot like the Angel of Death had come for him.
Or so he'd thought. Death didn't ask how badly you wanted to live, saying that your luck hadn't run out just yet. Roman swallowed again, coughing wetly as he struggled to get a better look at his saviour's face. It wasn't Batman or any of the other morons stupid enough to try saving the crime lord's life and with a bullet lodged in his lung, even the Bat wouldn't have been able to perform any miracles at this point.
Well, fuck. What else did he have to lose? Roman figured the other person wasn't asking out of the goodness of their little heart, that payment would be involved one way or the other but right now he didn't have the time or energy to lay out the terms of any contracts, the fires of his hot blood now growing cold and dim.
"... F-fuck it. Do what you c-can, n' I'll m-make it w-w-worth your w-while..." Roman spits, his words trailing off as a violent hacking fit overcomes him. The crime lord sighs as his strength gives out, jaw going slack as he fights bitterly to maintain eye contact until his last breath.
He wasn't ready to leave this life yet, especially not by the hand of some two-bit chump he didn't even know the name of.

“Yeah, I got an idea. Don’t offer yourself up like a turkey at an all-you-can-eat Thanksgiving buffet.” Roman replies. The bite of his words had softened slightly compared to seconds ago, mollified by the weight of Croc’s hand on his own. His fingers remain locked fast on those scales, in his mind being the only lifeline keeping the other man tied to Gotham. He lets out a shaky breath that causes his smoke-addled lungs to rattle, the sound they make being the only indication as to the nerves he feels right now.
”So Chimera’s been watchin’ you. So fucking what. Guessing this is their bright idea of getting you to come nice n’ easy instead of coming into Gotham to get you. I’ll tell you why, and it’s ‘cuz they’re scared. Maybe not of you, maybe not of me but they’re scared of something and there’s a lot of shit they gotta crawl through first before they can get to either one o’ us.”
The Joker. The GCPD. Batman. Arkham. The corruption that ran through the city like filth through the waters of Gotham Bay. Hell, even the civilians were as rugged and dirty as the criminals that ran it and that wasn’t even counting the ‘rogues’ famous for causing murder and mayhem like the two of them happened to be. Even C-Listers like the Ratcatcher would be too much of a handful to deal with anywhere else.
”If you fucking go, tell me, what’s stopping ‘em from doing what they want anyway once they get what they want? Dunno about you, but I never liked giving up without a fight.”
Roman would torture every last one of those Chimera fuckers before he'd let them take Croc.
Croc was silent as he listened to the other man's words, watching his blood drip from his claws in idle contemplation. The more Roman spoke, the more frustrated Croc got– though none of it was aimed at the other.
He was glad Roman caught him before he went through with leaving. There was nothing like another voice to throw things into perspective and clarify the incredibly stupid decision you were about to make.
Roman never gave up without a fight. Neither did Croc. Had Chimera’s threat really startled that fight out of him that badly? Had him fearing for their lives like his friends were incapable of defending themselves? Sionis was right: Chimera had a whole city to chew through if they wanted to get their hands on him, or anyone else mentioned in their message. And if they actually found him? God help whoever was unlucky enough to be on that team.
A dangerous glint had returned to his eyes by the time he gave the hand on his arm a heavy, reassuring pat.
"Ain't nothin' stoppin' 'em from doin' what they want. So I'm not goin' anywhere," he rumbled. "They’re gonna take on a lot more than they bargained for if they decide to come out here themselves."
A pause, followed by an amused snort.
"For all the good it'd do, I wonder how hard it'd be to get the Bat on their asses."

Honestly, my favorite response to LV!Black Mask was the ex-friend who didn't like that Roman and his fiancee Tiffany are one of the most stable, supportive, and healthy relationships in the rogue's gallery because he didn't like the notion that a person could know about some of the stuff Roman has done, still love him unconditionally, and be outwardly sweet and caring.
Like Tiffany had to be a) also a bad person and outwardly act that way, b) not know Roman is a crime boss and murderer, or c) be in an abusive relationship with Roman. She could not be a consenting, aware, outwardly pleasant adult in a healthy relationship with Roman Sionis, that wasn't realistic.

Stephanie Brown discovers a plot of C List villains attempting to smuggle drugs to one of the crime syndicates in Gotham. The problem is, the Bats have no idea which one. Even Black Mask's drug ring is shoveling out drugs, even though Batman took down his main supplier a month ago.
And when kids in Gotham start to go missing, the Bats have even more to worry about. Especially because the profiles for the abductors never seem to match up.
Stephanie starts to think that there’s a connection between the kidnappings and the new drug supplier in town, but no one seems to listen to her.
Nice, logical girls would stay back and assess, waiting for the Batman or Oracle to give her orders.
Luckily for Gotham, Stephanie Brown is done being a nice, logical girl.
