The family that stays in kilts, slays in kilts: Calum, Mali and her partner Lawrie choose tartan for their Aussie Christmas.
Calum's wearing Gazelle Bold platform sneakers by Adidas, £90 - his are slightly different cos the heel overlay is black, but I couldn't find an exact match. Maybe they were a promo version sent to pop rock stars.
Love how Cal is so into platforms even though he's ready 6 foot tall.

my theory for calum calling every vaguely tartan skirt a kilt is that’s what his parents told him when he had to wear Mali’s hand me downs being like ‘you’re scottish, be proud’ but really you don’t always have the extra cash to buy shorts for a growing boy when there are perfectly good skirts right there

The Gaelic singer Calum Kennedy was born on June 2nd 1928 at Orosay, Isle of Lewis.
Calum spent his early years in a remote community without electricity or running water. But music and dancing were strong features of his upbringing with villagers regularly converging for ceilidhs and informal music sessions.
His father ran a bus service to and from Stornoway and the family became quite a focal point of the local community and not merely for the sound of melodeon and fiddles regularly heard in their home. When Calum was 10 they acquired a radio - "the first in our village" - a novelty that attracted many visitors and opened his ears to the wider musical world around him.
He regularly sang in church, but attributed his unusual range and powers of projection to wandering on the moors near his home and singing to the cows and sheep as a way of calling them home from the hill.
At this time he had no thoughts of a career in entertainment and moved to Glasgow to work on Clydeside as an apprentice plater. He didn't last long there and went through a series of abortive careers, including a brief period training to be a doctor, a spell as an accountant and three and a half years in the Army.
His sister then suggested he try his luck singing at the Glasgow Mod, a competition-based annual festival of Gaelic arts. Victory qualified him to compete in the National Mod held in Dunoon. He didn't win that year but it inspired him to take his singing much more seriously and resurrect the songs of his childhood, which he performed with rare zeal and passion.
In 1953 he met and married Anne Gillies, herself a fine Gaelic singer, and they started performing together. Calum took the gold medal at the National Mod in Aberdeen in 1955. It was a triumph that launched him to stardom.
Concerts followed in London and elsewhere, and his first recordings. He broadened his repertoire from Gaelic ballads and mouth music to incorporate English-language material and, with his mop of curly hair, boyish looks and dramatic sense of delivery, he caught the imagination of the public at large.
In 1957 he travelled by train to Moscow with another would-be singer and actor, Richard Harris, to compete in the World Ballad Championship, during which the two became good friends and Kennedy acquired a taste for drink and a reputation as a party animal. It proved to be a momentous trip as Kennedy beat 500 singers from all over the world, was presented with a gold medal by the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev and got to perform at the Bolshoi Theatre.
He returned a hero and his subsequent recording career included many orchestrated populist songs, with material ranging from "The Skye Boat Song", "Bluebells of Scotland", "The Whistling Gypsy", "Ae Fond Kiss" and "Amazing Grace" to "Keep Right on to the End of the Road" and "Donald Where's Yer Troosers"? His most famous and most acclaimed interpretations, though, were the Gaelic love song "Peigi a Ghraidh" and Byron's tribute to his childhood in Aberdeen, "Dark Lochnagar". Later he composed his own material, like "No No Geordie Munro" and "The Skyline of Skye", though the best-loved was probably the sentimental evocation of his own roots on "Lovely Stornoway".
As powerfully emotive a singer as he was, however, it was his engagingly forceful personality that won the hearts of the public and his escalating fame throughout the Sixties was largely built on regular television appearances. He hosted the first live show on Grampian Television and also starred in his own variety show on STV, almost inventing the template for the archetype Scottish performer of the day with his quips, kilt and irrepressible beam presenting long-running series Calum's Celidh and Round at Calum's.
He lived an expansive life, making big money selling out venues all over the country with his own travelling show, while also leading a busy social and family life, with five daughters. Anne and the girls all featured in his television show Meet the Kennedys and for a while performed on stage as a family group, the Singing Kennedys.
However, luck turned against him in the Seventies. His wife died suddenly in 1974 at the age of 40 after being admitted to hospital for a routine operation. AIt him him really hard and about the same time he was afflicted by throat problems, he didn't sing for two years and when he did return he found that his theatrical approach had lost favour with a public that now saw his robust, kilted persona and sentimental singing as representative of a one-dimensional, stereotypical image of Scottishness. He diversified and became an impresario, buying Dundee Palace and Aberdeen's Tivoli Theatre, bringing Shirley Bassey, Frankie Vaughan and the Billy Cotton Band Show to Scotland.
He was never again to recapture his glories of the Fifties and Sixties, but continued to perform. In 1985 he was the subject of an unintentionally funny BBC documentary, Calum Kennedy's Commando Course, which followed him on a disastrous variety tour through the north of Scotland. In 1986 he married his second wife, Christine, and they had a daughter together, but divorced.
Despite persistent health problems that resulted in a heart bypass operation, he made a stage comeback in the 1990s and was still performing at the age of 70. He suffered a stroke in 2005 but there was a continuing awareness of his work through a couple of compilation CDs, The King of the Highlands and Sailing up the Clyde, of tracks recorded in his heyday.
His eldest daughter, Fiona Kennedy, has taken on his mantle as a television presenter and singer of Gaelic songs, she continues to tour and sing.
The song I have chosen is Mo Mhàthair (My Mother, pronounced “Mo Vaaaaair”) is a Scottish Gaelic song written in the 1920s by Neil MacLean.
Thoir mo shoraidh nunn thar chuantan
Gu mo mhàthair, ’s fhada bhuam i;
Cha chùm astar mòr a‘ chuain a gaol o m’ chridh’.
‘S i rinn m’ altram ’s mi nam phàiste
‘S ann na gràdh a fhuair mi m’ àrach;
O, chan fhàillinnich gu bràth mo spèis-sa dhi.
[Sèist]
Tha mo smuaintean oirr’ nam dhùsgadh;
Na mo chadal tha i dlùth dhomh;
Tha i daonnan air mo chùram anns gach nì.
’S tha a pearsa aoigheil shunndach
Na mo shùilean fad na h-ùine;
‘S e bhith faighinn null d’ a h-ionnsaigh rùn mo chridh’.
Nuair a chuimhnicheas mi m’ òige
Is an gaol a thug i dhòmhsa,
Thig na deòir a ruith gu deònach bho mo chridh’.
Bidh a fair’ orm is a cùram
Nuair a bha mise nam naoidhean
Dùsgadh iarrtais bhith a cluinntinn fuaim a bil’.
Chì mi bothan ’n glaic nan gleanntan,
Seasgair, sàmhach, blàth sa gheamhradh;
‘S tric a’ ruith mi cas-ruisgt‘, ceann-ruisgt’ feadh na tìr.
‘S ma gheibh mise dhachaigh sàbhailt’
Dh‘ionnsaigh ’n tìr san d‘fhuair mi m’ àrach,
Gheibh mi fàilte chridheil, chàirdeil ann is sìth.
Ged a tha i nis fàs aosda,
O, cha lughdaich siud mo ghaol-sa
Do ‘n tè ’s gràdhaiche san t-saoghal mhòr rium fhìn.
’S nuair a ruigeas mise broilleach
San robh mo cheann beag tric a’ falach,
Gheibh mi aoibhneas agus sonas ‘m blàths a cridh’.
Ged a tha mi seo air faondradh
Ann an tìr taobh thall an t-saoghail,
‘S ged tha cuantan sgaoilte eadar mise ’s i.
’S e mo dhùrachd a dhol dhachaigh
Gu mo mhàthair anns a’ chlachan
‘S a bhith ’g ailleis bhith nam bhalach beag a-rìs.
And the translation
Mo Mhàthair (My Mother, pronounced “Mo Vaaaaair”) is a Scottish Gaelic song written in the 1920s by Neil MacLean, also known as the Govan Bard. This timely release marks both Gaelic Awareness Month in Nova Scotia as well as Mother’s Day. Mo Mhathair is the first single on my upcoming album, Crossing the Causeway.
The cover art that accompanies this single was inspired by a photograph taken circa 1920 of my great-grandmother, Sarah MacDonald. Born in Fairmont, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, Scottish Gaelic was her first language. She was known as a healer, and I hope to channel a bit of her healing energy in my recording of this song.
The melody is a popular slow air among musicians in Cape Breton and was included on The Cape Breton Festival of Fiddlers Glendale ‘77 Live LP.
I learned to sing this song by listening to Callum Kennedy on repeat. I am grateful for the language tutoring offered by retired Gaelic professor and friend Catriona Parsons. She was my next door neighbor in the early ‘90s as well as my first gaelic language and song teacher.

lyrics
Mo Mhathair - My Mother - English Translation
Bring my greetings across the seas
To my mother, far away from me
The great distance of the ocean will not keep her love from my heart
She nurtured me when I was a child
I was brought up in love
Oh, my respect for her will never fail
Although I have wandered here
In a land on the other side of the world
And though oceans are spread between her and me
It is my wish to go home
To my mother in the village
Oh I long to be in my youth again
I think of her when I wake up
In my sleep she is close to me
She always cares about me in everything
And her hospitable personality is cheerful
In my eyes, all the time
The aim of my heart is to return home to her

Okay, but like, 3 outfits right? 2 that very much look like what you'd expect them to wear, their street style vs their stage style, maybe who they are and who they present themselves as.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This very much are what we expect them to wear, Michael in all black, or in a comfy sweater/sweatshirt, Luke in converses and graphic tees or soft colored suits and makeup, Ashton with the vest and the ascot or the tank and leather jacked, and Calum with the docs and the long sleeves or the wide leg pants and layers. Calum being in a kilt here really adds another layer with the whole who they are thing considering his heritage. This is them. Alone.
But the 3th outfit tho. While they do look amazing and feel very on brand, for me at least, they feel very on brand but slightly to the left, and at first I thought it could be a who we expect them to be, cuz Ashton looks like sunshine, Calum is in bright colors, but that didn't add up that well for Luke or Michael, then it hit me, it's who they are when influenced by who they love and who loves them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I put these together because I feel like I can try to explain myself with words forever and it won't make as much sense. We come to expect Luke in a suit, but the style he's wearing it's Calum's style, but with that Luke little twist of the blue eyeshadow. The style of the orange sweater made me think of Ashton but I can throw in some Luke in there too, but he's still wearing wide leg pants and docs. Ashton's outfit felt really Luke to me, and maybe it is because I think stripes and yellow in this bands context and I see Luke for some reason, but I think it makes sense, even the way his posing in the drums feels very Luke, but the sunglasses and the collar picking out are very Ashton. And Michael, my boy is even wearing Ashton's beanie, the sweater very much made me think of that sb picture and the shirt Ashton wore in the old me mv, but Michael's still wearing ripped jeans and his dangling earrings. And I think that that's a cool little nod to even if you are alone the people that love and you love will still make an impact. You still carry the mark they left with you.

“Okay and now you’re gonna have to sit here look pretty while they dry. Then I have to do the topcoat.” Cladia told Calum as she capped the black nail polish bottle. She set it on the counter.
“Top coat?” he asked her.
“Yeah, to make them shiny like mine.” she extended her left hand towards him showing off how shiny her manicure looked.
“I bet they’ll look nice when they’re wrapped around my—”
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence. I have to make some brownies.” she giggled. “Eileen asked me to make some.”
“Oh are you friends coming to the show? I didn’t know they were in town.”
“No.” Claudia said as she chopped some chocolate for the brownies. She looked up at him. “Do you not remember me telling you that I’m going out with my friends to celebrate Giselle’s birthday?”
“You'd rather go out with your friends and not see me perform after almost two years of me not being able to.” He said in an annoyed tone. “You know what the band went through since the release of CALM and how our old team fucked us over. And you’re not gonna watch us make our comeback because you're going out.”
Claudia scoffed in disbelief. "So you can go out, get drinks, and even go on week-long trips with your friends but I can't spend one night out with mine...got it." She grabbed the mixing bowl and angrily mixed the dry ingredients.
"That's not what I meant." Calum snapped.
"What did you mean?" She turned back and crossed her arms. "That you basically said that you expect me to be at your side 24/7? I'm my own person and I'm allowed to go out and have fun with my friends."
“I know you are!”
“Then why are you having a fucking fit over me going out?” She snapped back in the same tone.
“Forget it, do whatever the fuck you want.” Calum sighed.
He stomped upstairs and went to shower. He cursed seeing that his nails got messed up. Calum walked out of the shower in a towel and went to the walk in closet to change into some sweats to wear for soundcheck. He stopped in tracks when he saw Claudia's clothes laid on the bed along with her overnight bag and toiletries bag. He eyed the sheer top and the leather skirt and frowned.
It’s not that he was mad at her for going out with her friends. He was glad that she was able to find time to see them since she lived in LA and was always busy with school. He was just upset that she wasn’t going to be seeing him. She’s his biggest supporter and is always there for him cheering him on or being there for him to lean on. And it's not like the support is one sided.
He’s always there for her too. Just last year, when she got accepted into grad school, he knew she was making a tough decision in choosing what program is best for her. He was aware of the possibility of her leaving LA and he was there for her. But he knew better than to press, so he let her do what she wanted, even if it hurt him not seeing her bright smile in the audience..

“De mi vida te boté, y te boté. Te di banda y te solté, yo te solté. Pal’ carajo usté’ se fue, y usté se fue. De mi vida te boté, yo te boté” Claudia loudly sang as she saing into her Modelo bottle as her cousin recorded her.
“You know what would be fun? Seeing a reggaeton show, I just wanna dance to that.” Jasmine said when she reached for the bottle of tequila to keep Claudia from drinking more.
“Isn’t Ozuna going to be at the show Cal is performing at?” Medelyn asked Claudia.
“Huh?” Claudia hummed while she opened a black cherry Bud Light seltzer.
Giselle looked up from her phone. “He is! Claudia, why do you keep this information from us.” she looked at her, signed. “Quitenle el bote.”
Claudia took it as a hint to sing. “Y te bote—”
“Claudia stop singing,” Medelyn told her. She grabbed Claudi’s plate of carne asada fries and cursed. “Why didn’t you eat this?”
Claudia eyes widened. “There they are! I was looking for them after I made my cantarito.”
“Okay so no more alcohol for Claudia.” Eileen said, taking the White Claw from her. Her face hardened when she pouted. “No me mires así.”
“Te pones a comer porque te pones a comer.” Medelyn told Claudia, sitting her on the ground and placing her carne asada fries on the coffee table.
“Medeee,” she began.
“Me vale madre. Ponte a comer.”
“You’re such a mom, Mede.” Claudia giggled before shoving a fork full of carne asada fries.
“And you’re being a baby.” Medelyn mumbled as she wiped Claudi’s cheek to get the guacamole off her face. She grabbed Claudia’s phone and played In the Heights for her to make sure she stayed put.
“Okay, I asked Gia and she got us passes to show.” Giselle said walking to the living room. She looked at Claudia who was eating and scrolling through her phone. “Which means we have an hour to sober Claudia up.”
Claudia ignored them and kept eating. She opened her messages and saw that Calum texted her a while ago, letting her know that he finished soundcheck and wanted to know if she wanted him to send her food. She dismissed his message and sent him some explicit pictures of herself.
‘I’m mad at you, but enjoy my ass.’ She texted along with the pictures.
She saw the three dots appear at the bottom and frowned when they disappeared. A few tears spilled down her cheeks.
“I don’t want to go to girls night. I wanna see Cal.” Claudia blubbered. She got up and stumbled on her way to the door.
“Pendeja we are seeing him.” Eileen mumbled, guiding her back to where she was sitting.
In an hour and three outfit changes later, the group made their way to the seats Giselle’s sponsors saved for them. A server came by and dropped off drinks and food that Giselle had ordered ahead for them. Claudia reached for a White Claw, but was stopped.
“No!” Medelyn, Giselle, Jasmine and Eileen all said simultaneously.
“Drink this.” Medelyn said opening a water bottle for her. She passed Caudia a tray of chicken tenders. “Eat this too.”
“I literally just ate.” Claudia said, dunking a fry into the ketchup.
She didn’t argue with them and checked her phone. Calum hadn’t replied to her messages and it made her sad. She knew he was mad, but she didn’t know he was mad.
“Hi Claudia,” a girl waved in front of her.
Claudia didn’t recognize her, but from what her and the group of girls wore, the irl was with, she guessed that she was a fan of the guys. They all wore variations of CALM, Superbloom, and WFTTWTAF merch. So she just waved back.
An announcer came by and announced that they'll be starting in ten minutes. Claudia’s knee bounced as she waited for them. She grabbed her notebook and ripped a few pages and started folding them into a paper airplane.
Then the lights dimmed. Claudia nearly fainted when she saw her boyfriend walk out on stage. She didn’t know what he was wearing. A few days earlier when she asked him what he was wearing, he shrugged and said clothes.
“Y’all are matching!” Medelyn teased, nodding at Claudia’s outfit. She also went with an all black look consisting of a crop top, a mini skirt, and her trusty Doc Martens.
The guys jumped right in and played ‘She Looks So Perfect.’ Claudia cheered excitedly and danced with her friends.
“I swear we’re back in high school and Claudia won’t shut up about the hot brown guy being her quote on quote boyfriend.” Eileen joked.
“He’s my boyfriend de a deveras now so...”
Luke talked to the audience for a minute so Claudia took advantage and wrote a message to Calum to send through the paper airplane. She stood on her chair and aimed at the keyboard. It ended up landing on the bass.
Calum opened the paper and read the note. He recognised her handwriting and looked up, scanning the audience for her. His eyes landed on her and he winked at her. Claudia felt her cheeks warm up.
When Ghost of You began playing, she met Calum’s eyes and it felt like they were the only ones there. Tears spilled as she heard his voice. She felt Giselle’s arm around her shoulders as she swayed her.
Once the band’s set was over, Gianna walked over to the table. She was with Crystal and couldn't get to their table before the show.
"Gia!" Claudia squealed when she saw her.
"You have no idea how relaobed tonsee that you're the dumb hoe that was flirting with Cal. I was about to text you." Gianna said playfully.
"What?" Claudia said confused, the alcohol was still making her confused at everything.
"Nevermind."
Calum and Luke snuck back to where Claudia and her friends were. They greeted her friends first. When Calum reached her, she attached herself to him.
“Can we talk?” She asked him in a soft voice.
“Of course.” He nodded.
Claudia grabbed her things and leaned over. “Ahorita vengo.” she told them. “We’re gonna talk for a bit.”
“Shut up we all know y’all are gonna fuck.” Giselle snickered, passing Claudia her beige jacket and bag. “Just be back for Ozuna’s set.”
“We’re not gonna fuck.”
***
Claudia’s eyes never left Calum’s as she took him deeper in her mouth. He bit into his fist, keeping him from making any noise. His stomach began to contract, letting Claudia know that he was close. Slowly, she pulled him out of her mouth until only his tip rested on her tongue. She widened her eyes, making her look more innocent as she stroked him. Then she took him back in her mouth, bobbing her head, as he came.
“Sorry, I couldn't help myself.” she said nervously as she wiped the corner of her mouth. “You look so… I can’t even explain it.”
“I’m not complaining.” He told her, pushing back some of her curls.
Calum smiled at her. He pulled her to his lap so she straddled one of his legs. His thigh felt soaked where she sat so he slipped one of his hands in her skirt, feeling that she wasn’t wearing anything under. He felt Claudia’s hand push his hand away.
“Sorry… I should have asked.” Calum quickly said.
“No, you’re good. Before we, you know...I wanted to apologize.” She said, bringing his hands to her lap. “After reflecting with a bottle of tequila, I realized that I reacted poorly. I should have known where you’re coming from and why today was such a big day for you. I mean I was there with you. I witnessed how your old management purposely messed up your tour dates and not book dates. I’m sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologize. I reacted in a shit way too. You’re right, you know, I do sometimes expect you to be there with me. Not as someone or something to show off, but as moral support. Like if I feel overwhelmed or something I see you and I relax because I know you’re there. If that makes sense.”
“It does.'' She leaned into his chest and toyed with the chains on his kilt. “I really am sorry, Cal.”
“It’s okay,” he said, rubbing her thigh.
“Did I tell you how amazing you were tonight?”
“I thought the blowie covered it.”
“No, like you were amazing. Like panty dropping amazing.”
“More like panty disappearing. Where are yours, pretty girl?” he said, slipping his hand back in her skirt where he slowly rubbed her clit.
Claudia grabbed his face and kissed him. They moaned into each other’s mouths. Without breaking their kiss, Calum  grabbed the back of her thighs and picked her up, carrying her on the makeup counter. He took a step back to remove his kilt, but Claudia pulled him back.
“Keep it.” she mumbled.
Calum awkwardly lifted the front part and tucked it in the waistbands. He pressed his hips into hers. Claudia let out a soft gasp of pleasure. He pulled away and thrusted into her once again, earning louder sounds from her. He stroked his length a few times then coated himself with Claudia’s arousal. He placed one of her legs over his shoulder and slid into her.
Claudia nails dig into Calum’s biceps as he pounded into her. He took her rough and possessively. He snapped his hips, burying himself deep into her with every thrust. It didn’t take long for Claudia to come. She chanted his name and wrapped her legs tighter around him, wanting to feel all of him. She rested her head on his chest and closed her eyes.
“Can you take another?” Calum asked her.
“Yeah.” she nodded, breathless.
Calum pulled out of her and carried her to the couch. He laid her down and patted the couch
“Hands and knees.”
Claudia nodded and knelt in front of one of the arm rests. She felt his hand on her back, gently pushing her over the armrest. He leaned forward and kissed up her neck.
“This is to remind you you’re mine.” He whispered in her ear. “Ready?”
Claudia nodded eagerly. She looked over her shoulder and pulled him into a kiss. Without breaking their kiss, she turned her whole body so she was laying down. He got on top of her and slid back in.  He pulled out most of the way then pushed himself in her once more. His hands gripped her waist as he slowly rocked into her. He twisted Claudia’s skirt around his hand, using it to anchor himself. As the minutes passed, his thrusts got rougher, and Claudia couldn’t hold back. She begged Calum to keep fucking her at that deliciously slow and rough pace she loved. He leaned over his chest against her back.
“Fuck.” Calum moaned.
His lips kissed all over her neck as he continued to fuck Claudia. She rocked back against him, meeting his thrusts.
“That’s it, take me so good, pretty girl.” He groaned in her ear. Calum shifted his hips as he thrusted into her. The new angle he was fucking her made her beg for him.
“Shit.” He groaned.
“Yes!”
She lifted her hips to meet his thrusts. He gripped her hips with one hand while the other went back down to her clit. Calum worked his fingers roughly as he pushed his hips into Claudia.
He buried his face in her neck, kissing her sweet spot. She quietly whimpered his name, lazily meeting his thrusts before her orgasm took over. Calum’s orgasm followed soon after. He cried her name and pushed himself deep inside Claudia, spilling every last drop in her.
“I love you in skirts.” Calum said once they came down from their highs. Without pulling out of her, he laid her on him.
“I can say the same for you. Claudia giggled, resting her chin on his chest.
“Did you know I was gonna wear a kilt?” He asked.
“No. I was so shocked when I saw you on stage. But I love it.”
“On our way over. I saw a few tweets about our outfits. Some are asking who wore it best.”
“I did obvio,” Claudia said, making Calum snort.
They laid on the couch, giggling about Claudia being a drunk mess before showing up to the concert. Her phone buzzed.
She looked at her purse on the couch and groaned. “That’s probably Giselle. We were here to see Ozuna’s set.”
“Can I come?” Calum asked her. “I know it’s girls night…”
“It’s fine.” She waved him off. She pulled away from him. “But I should clean up. I’m not wearing panties and you know I don’t you cum dripping down my thighs.”
“I can clean you up.” he said in a suggestive tone, eyeing his cum all over her.
“Wanna clean me up?”
“More than anything.”
