i sat and watched him all night long. he was at the pub with his cousin and friends the night after we broke up. he seemed happier. he had some girl on his lap , taking shot after shot together. i sat alone.

the next night i saw him again — he had some girl wrapped around his finger , he pushed her up against a wall and began to feverishly kiss her like he'd never kissed anyone before. i just watched.

i finally gathered the courage to knock on his dorm room the night after that — i had left some of my things in his room. he let me in quietly , his room a mess. he didn't say a word. he just sat down at his desk waiting for me to find my things and leave. i found him staring at a picture of us he still had on his desk.

it had been taken a year prior , it was the night of some party. he was dressed up as a devil - and i the angel. in that moment i finally saw the irony of it all.

i knew this breakup was coming , the last few weeks he just sat there tolerating me. barely speaking to me , barely wanting me to come around to his dorm. i just didn't know why. he wouldn't tell me , when we broke up he just said it was because his life was going in a different direction , sure.

he then looked over at me , i could tell he wanted to say something to me. i just found my way towards his bed , my blanket still laid perfectly on my side of the bed. it looked like he hadn't touched it. i picked it up slowly , it smelled like him now.

he just stared over at me , not saying a word. i could barely kept myself composed. i had to take a deep breath before i continued to search for my things. i knew where they were at , but i wanted to draw this out. maybe — just maybe he'd say something. apologize , tell me the truth , anything.

but nothing came of it. by the time i found my things he lead me to the door. i took one last long look at him. in that moment i saw my farleigh. i remembered the first time i came over to stay the night in his dorm.

i remember standing in this exact place , almost the exact same time. but instead we were both smiling , excited to see what the night had in store for us. but now his smile was replaced with a look of sadness. i debated questioning him , but if this made him happy — i would happily oblige.

before i turned around he held out his hand , it had the picture of us. i saw him trying to act like he didn't care. but he did. he always did , even if he'd never show it. i looked up at him as i took the picture from his hand.

his mouth opened , i was expecting something to come out but he just quickly shut his mouth again. i knew he couldn't tell me the truth.

i nodded my head , and he did the same back. i turned around and heard the door shut gently.

i took one last look down at the picture of us , and it came alive. i saw his smile , my smile. the way his hands snaked around my waist and held me. the kiss he pressed on my lips right after the picture. the awkward whistles from all of our friends cheering us on.

i felt tears welling in my eyes. what a bitter feeling. i held the picture close. i closed my eyes and imagined a better outcome.

the next night after that i didn't see him , then the night after that i didn't see him.

i suppose this is the end. which i still haven't come to terms with , but one day surely i will. but for now , i'll keep that picture pinned to my cork board hanging above my desk.

Four months ago, I fell victim to someone in a high position in Egypt who pretended they would evacuate my family for 20k, instead of the 40k. To some of you, this might seem like a small amount, but for me, it was all I had. Why does the world agree to suffocate us? Why do we have to pay money for our lives at all?
