• A little history
In 1162 the Patriarch of Aquileia, Ulrich Il Von Treven, sought to subjugate Venice to German control. However the Venetian Republic fought back and were victorious in maintaining their freedom. They celebrated with a little festival in San Marco Square. Afterwards The Venice Carnival became a popular and yearly celebration, especially during the Renaissance and into the 18th century.
In 1797 the Carnival was outlawed by Francis II, the Holy Roman Emporer and the Emporer of Austria. So extreme was his ban against the Carnival, that even masks were forbidden. In 1979, the Carnival of Venice was brought back as a celebration of Venice's history and culture.
