Could you talk about Aizen"s relationship with Shinji? What he thinks about him? etc

Sure! This ask gave me an itch to reread TBTP because (much to my dismay), I wish we saw Aizen and Shinji interact during TYBW. I hope we see some added content in the anime, but I'm not holding my breath lol.

This is going to be more of a ramble/word dump so I apologize if it's not cohesive!

I'm of the opinion that if there was anyone Aizen wanted to understand him (outside of Urahara), it would have been Shinji. I specifically think about this panel and how interesting it is that Kubo gave Aizen a sad look in his eyes. We don't really see sadness in Aizen, there's only one other scene where I vaguely recall him looking more sad/disappointed (vs him being bored/disappointed).

(This is from Ch -316/TBTP 10)

We know from Shinji's side, he was always wary and somewhat cautious around Aizen. He never trusted him fully and kept him at arms length for everything. On one hand, this leads him to his downfall, but I also read it as Shinji having an immediate gut reaction to not trust Aizen and Shinji could never shake that off. He can be professional with Aizen, but he mentally cannot handle anything beyond that. Something about Aizen felt so fundamentally off to Shinji that he could not get close to him.

So I wonder if this bothered Aizen as well... Aizen is someone who meticulously crafted his persona. He was known to be kind, hardworking and diligent, but something about this persona immediately gave a warning to Shinji.

But I'm not gonna defend Aizen and say he crafted the "perfect" persona - because even he (in a roundabout way) admits he didn't. Even subconscious traits of the "real" Aizen comes through with every interaction Aizen and Shinji would have had with each other, but because of the wall Shinji mentally puts between the two of them, he cannot discern these traits. So while this adds to Aizen's "loneliness complex", it gives him leeway to add in stand-ins with Kyoka Suigetsu. And that's what disappoints Aizen at his core - even his own Captain can't recognize the little things about him.

And this leads me to think that Aizen and Shinji were Lieutenant and Captain for a few centuries at least. We know that at Nanao's graduation from the academy, Aizen was already the Lieutenant of Squad 5:

So yes, Shinji may have had time to "understand" Aizen - but he doesn't. Even at the start of TBTP, Aizen asks Shinji what he's listening to and while Aizen doesn't understand jazz, instead of trying to get to "know" Aizen (even frivously), by asking him "what music do you even listen to then?" he tells him "why did you ask me that then?"

Another thing I noticed is that Aizen (during TBTP) asks a surprising amount of questions (it can be argued though that these are the hypnotized stand-ins asking). He's trying to gain as much knowledge as he can from other people, and Shinji isn't there to answer, or even acknowledge that he's asking questions. It's also "normal" for Aizen to be seen at the library, as Shunsui and the C46 didn't bat an eye at Aizen's alibi. While fundamentally Captain/Lieutenant relationships can really be any sort of dynamic (mentor/mentee, boss and personal assistant), I got the sense that Aizen didn't really "learn" much from Shinji about the ways of Soul Society. Shinji had a tight lip and only shared what needed to be shared likely for work-reasons.

And then there's their shikais! I found it fascinating how both of them have reality-altering shikais. Shinji's shikai being a complete distortion of senses, while Aizen's is subtle manipulation of senses. I don't really have any more to say for that, but I've interpreted this as their way of being honest with people. Shinji's manipulation of senses is very cognizant and deliberate - Shinji is blunt. Aizen's is subtle but traumatizing - you can't trust anything coming from Aizen.

I think though, Shinji's experience with Aizen shaped how he treats his Squad going forward. I have a soft spot for headcanons for how Squad 5 operates post-Aizen's incarceration. Shinji treats Momo much differently than he did with Aizen because he knows what it's like being used and completely victimized by Aizen. There's no point in him being on his guard against someone who was hurt just as badly as he was by Aizen's hand. There is a sense of camaraderie they share in that sense. No one (arguably) "knew" Aizen as much as they did because they worked with him in such close capacity. I'd love to know what lies and truths Aizen shared with them lol.

Sorry again for this ramble, but thank you for this ask! Wish we see/have more Squad 5 content, but alas!

The first time I watched this episode, I thought Urahara was just playing up his Shopkeeper Customer Service Voice with Akon, who is calling Urahara in a desperate bid to get ahold of Ichigo. But then, it occurred me that maybe there's a genuine part of Urahara that wants to know how Akon is doing? He greets Akon the same way you would someone that you haven't seen in a really long time, but are happy to hear from. After all, the last time Urahara saw Akon was probably 100 years ago?

//Ayo it's a meta/hc heavy day. I would like to formally apologize to & thank @/sunniestshark for suffering my infodump about Karin & the Kurosaki family. I owe you my life.

This focuses specifically on the details & timeline of Karin's development of "I don't see spirits" to "I'm the Spirit Guy(tm) of the family" to "why the fuck is my brother, a trained combatant, not teaching me how to Not Die from hollows?" & how this affected the Kurosaki family.

We see in ch 1 that spirits are a) a common occurrence in the family, b) Yuzu can see spirits, albeit faintly, & c) Karin largely ignores spirits.

This attitude drastically changes in the Fullbringer arc. In ch 428, while she visits the Urahara Shouten for spiritual repellant, Karin seems to acknowledge spiritual capability more, & is happy to take the burden of the family's spiritual issues so Ichigo doesn't have to.

Karakura is a town inundated with malevolent spirits. Ichigo is frequently pulled out of class & woken in the middle of the night to address hollows (it's literally 90% the plot of the premier arc, so I will not be providing examples), & even after Sousuke is incarcerated & unable to sick weird hollow experiments on innocent townspeople (White & Metastacia are the first to come to mind) they're still frequent enough that Ichigo expresses in 424 that Uryuu takes care of a lot hollow problems, even being pulled out of class.

Additionally, it's not an uncommon occurrence in Karakura that the city experiences an ambush of many hollows. Just off the top of my head, Ryuunosuke & Shino are ambushed by no fewer than like six hollows in ch 482 & have to be rescued by Ichigo.

So Karin, who is spiritually capable enough to fight hollows with no training alongside Jinta, Ururu, & Don Kanonji in ch 88.5, is in a town literally drowning in cannibalistic monsters.

Despite her capability, Karin still needs help fighting. She isn't able to kill it on her own. It's perfectly feasible she'd be killed if left alone with the wrong hollow.

Obviously, any thirteen year old who's as insular as Karin is wouldn't seek help, but she would have to later on for survival. But there's no indication anyone really offers training. It's understandable why Kisuke wouldn't, but you'd expect, at the very least, Isshin to do the smart thing & stop coddling his daughters & teach them how to defend themselves. But he doesn't.

This is where meta turns into canon divergence.

Karin still fights hollows with Jinta & Ururu. She discovers her love for fighting hollows during this time. However, Ichigo feels Karin doesn't need to pursue combat now that he has his powers back. This makes Karin resent Ichigo. She says it's because she's gone to great lengths to keep Ichigo's status as a shinigami a secret, but she doesn't want to admit she's hurt & feels abandoned that her brother refuses to help her protect herself & do something she loves.

Their relationship continues to sour & eventually, it bleeds into the rest of the family when they start having outright screaming matches. During this time, Karin falls into depression, & most of her negative feelings culminate in self-injury since she hasn't developed effective coping mechanisms. During this time, her grades fall, she stops playing soccer, she starts smoking tobacco & marijuana, drinks, & once she enters high school, begins having one-night stands.

Karin kills herself after graduating high school. This implodes the family. They survived Masaki's death because Ichigo, Yuzu, & Karin were so young & needed Isshin for survival. However, they're adults now. I don't see how everything that's happened doesn't come to light. Yuzu finds out that Isshin & Ichigo are shinigami & is furious they've kept these secrets from her, & Yuzu is hurt that Karin, who we've seen share a bed before, has abandoned her.

I don't think Karin cutting ties with the family would dissolve it. But Yuzu is the matriarch. She cooks, cleans, & handles most of the household affairs. Yuzu & Karin cutting ties would dissolve the family.

so like....we're all in agreement that Mayuri is a "just like what you're fighting" type character, right? Like I get loving him for being twisted and honestly open and obvious about it (unlike other villain characters and in particular some of the Quincy)... like on the one hand as a PERSON, I'm like "love to hate this character, kinda badass in a sick way". but yeah like. He's just as bad as the Quincy and I think it puts a lot of his actions in this arc into perspective in a really interesting way

Wanna redo my old Bleach autism post as it’s pretty much gone anyways due to my remaking and I’m older but I’d like to do it with multiple characters this time. HOWEVER, I’m already so far into my reread I’ll go fucking insane if I do it right away as I’d have to GO BACK and reread again. Anyways, the focus was gonna be Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Kisuke, Byakuya, Mashiro, Kensei, and Riruka. I tried to branch it out a bit so there’s main characters and then random ones but a few more is fine. I have more headcanons than this I just don’t wanna overdo it by including TOO many characters. This could be a fun project if I do it with someone else that feels the same way! Maybe get a person per character? Ichigo will be...a LOT, I’m sure. I don’t wanna forget that I wanna do this so I’m typing this out. I am VERY focused on Digimon right now and my one track mind shows but I do actually intend to do this. It won’t be an edit or anything like that. A long post more like? I can talk a lot but I’m not writer, y’know? But feedback and advice will be something I’ll take from my fellow autistic Bleach fans, naturally! Please look forward to it! And if anyone wants to join in on this, hmu!

how does he react to intruders in the wandenreich

Hi! So! That question has two different possibilities, so I will go over it. 

1) It would include the fact or the assumption that there even are entities capable of becoming intruders when it comes to the Kingdom, and that is, as it is, very unlikely. [ I say very, because you never know who is insane enough. ].

An easy explanation as to why it is nearly impossible to get into the Quincy City is the very name of it. The "Wandenreich", even though a quite butchered german compound word, is composed of two words. "Reich" for realm/kingdom/domain and "Wanden" what is meant to stem from "Wand", the word for wall and likely is supposed to be something similar to "walled off", even though the language doesn't work that way, but it is also the way the official translations try to explain it as. So basically it is the "walled off Kingdom", pretty much hidden [ which is also the reason why it's oftentimes translated as "invisible Empire" ] behind the Seireitei and without astute and prior knowledge that it is even there, there is no point in attempting to locate it or to try and enter it. 

For anybody interested, a german translation for the "walled off Empire" would by the way be "Das eingemauerte/abgeschottete Reich". [ or "das versteckte Reich" for invisible Empire. ]

That aside, if someone were to find it or have an inkling where it was, the only known way to enter the Wandenreich is the Quincy-characteristic shadow portals [ ch. 511 / ch. 588 as examples ] seen throughout the series from the first invasion on. Later on, in the second invasion, Mayuri Kurotsuchi as well as Kisuke Urahara managed to copy said technology [ little surprise there ] but it is still the same power and the - up to that point - only way to enter the Empire from the outside. The portals themselves do not get disturbed by any means by anybody crossing them, Humans / Hollows / Shinigami alike can pass through them freely and without a problem as long as a Quincy opened the pathway in the first place. Thus, after entering the realm without any "escort" of said sort, you would need to deal with the Soldat of Yhwach, a particularly powerful army as noted at the end of the first invasion [ ch. 511 ]. 

Getting through them is a chore but likely possible when it comes to Espada / Captain level, who can dispose of them with suitable force and manpower as well as energy spared. 

I don't think, if the Soldat are capable of dispatching an intruder, that there would even be the need for a signal going to the higher ranks. That will happen if someone were able to go through them and when these first few measurements of defence might get breached, for whatever reason or "luck" there might be. 

What comes after that? The Sternritter. 

They are nothing less than a death sentence. It does not matter which one you would encounter, the outcome would be the same. There is very little reason to assume they would make prisoners, given the very simple fact that, when Yhwach did not manage to incapacitate Ichigo, he flat-out ordered his execution [ ch. 513 - 514 ]. They do not care, they have no reason to care. If someone were to break into their "sanctuary" and disturb it, the outcome would be death to 100% if not for some weird miracle [ or maybe plot armour, who knows ]. 

Jugram, in that regard, is the last defence and the one you don't want to go against. One might want to imagine that getting through the Sternritter would be a feat great enough for Yhwach to recognise and have said intruder be captured and brought to him? Yes but also no. The idea that there would be mercy once the Grandmaster of the Quincy got you after you wrecked that much havoc is futile. Neither of the two highest in power is known to be kind and while Jugram shows little to no care or regard for anybody, Yhwach does like himself an entertaining show if it presents itself, but also: if someone were to disturb the peace and, mind you, he [ and by extension everybody else ] calls his own person a Pacifist, said disturbance will be dealt with posthaste. Brutally and thoroughly. 

2) There are no intruders in the Wandenreich, even if "outside forces" are there. 

Sounds the same as above, but is not. 

As it is on the dash and with various characters, a lot of them are actually inside the Wandenreich, be they Arrancar or Shinigami or anything else, Canons and OCs alike, because they are allowed to. They have been brought there by a Quincy for one reason or another or happened to meet a Quincy and be "introduced" to the Wandenreich and Yhwach in particular, not making them intruders anymore, even if they technically would enter without permission [ Ji-Soo is such a topic, but they are allowed to come and go as they please by Yhwach ].

So as it is for any of them, Jugram just doesn't regard them if it's not needed. Particularly, if they are there under the guidance of any of the Sternritter, he sees them as these people are: "soldiers" for their cause, as we know that Quilge was sent to Hueco Mundo specifically to find them more "idiots" [ this is literally how Yhwach worded it ] to use. 

As long as they behave and no order gets issued to eradicate them, they will be treated with "due respect" and everything beyond that is not for him to care about. Also because he is the Grandmaster of the Sternritter, so as by that extension, whoever else is beneath the Sternritter only gets his attention if they act out of order. Then they are turned into the status of a threat and intruder and Jugram would, by the way, make the Ritter in question kill them, talk about double punishment here.

Aizen or Urahara for the Unhinged Character Bingo?

Aizen. Snake of a guy. Unsettling mf. I think he's funny. He reached his peak as a character for me when he had a breakdown after his butterfly ultimate form was foiled by Ichigo. Hayami Shou slayed as his VA.

Kisuke. I enjoy poking and prodding at him. Maybe I'll stop ruining his life some day, but that day is in the far, far future.

I have too few thoughts about Bleach, for a guy who has written 6 Bleach fics. I'm still at ch 257 of the manga (Hueco Mundo arc) bc I got bored months ago and forgot to pick it up again. I should seriously finish it lol

The funniest part for me with the entire urahara/philza thing is that one time I saw a post where someone said they’re both father figures, and got so upset because while a mentor urahara is not a father figure to ichigo!!!

…..Until I remembered that he literally has two kids

But like Kubo forgot about them too so it’s not my fault!

askin is an incredibly atypical character for a shonen manga, and an incredibly atypical antagonist on top of that. we’re used to characters who are either overly confident and boastful from the start or who develop a sense of confidence through hard training and such.  what we’re hardly used to is a very strong antagonist who subverts this trope by continuously putting himself down the way askin does. he doesn’t do it out of self-pity, but because he’s hyperaware of being constantly underestimated, and having come to terms with it,  he’s learned to make it his strength by feeding the delusion that he’s harmless.  

#pepe calls him a monster and compares him to zaraki #it takes two royal guards to kill askin #and then in the final fight #urahara + yoruichi + yuushiro + grimmjow #four vs one #he's all but harmless #but he doesn't boast #pride and self-esteem are weird concepts to him #they tend to fluctuate #but we see him at his most confident when speaking in plural #when speaking as a quincy and not strictly as askin #i think the only pride he has is the collective pride of the quincy #not to a very remarkable extent but /a bit/ #ch study.
