"I've been looking for you everywhere. I thought you were dead."

"What? No, of course not!" Chad said, looking up from where he sat in the pilot's seat of the quinjet, laptop in hand, trying to figure out what had caused the GPS navigation and tracking system to malfunction during a mission. It was more important than ever now that the world had been overrun by - he couldn't believe he was saying this - zombies. Who would've thought. Nice one, Umbrella. Great job. Very thorough.

Seeing how worried Wanda was, he supposed that he should have checked in with her first when everyone had gotten home from said mission instead of sticking behind to take care of a technical issue. In hindsight, it would've looked bad, everyone coming home but he's nowhere in sight. Of course Wanda would think the worst... She was always a worrier.

"I'm sorry if I scared you. I'm fine, I'm just..." Chad looked at the control panel. "This thing's got some issues I need to iron out so it's ready to go for the next mission." For now, though, he set aside his laptop and went to her. "I'm sorry..." he said, hugging her.

If Kaplan had told Rain that immediately following the incident, she probably would've replied with two words, as sharp as the snap of a mousetrap: "Save it."

Rain didn't blame him for what happened that night, though. She never did. Not really. If she did, she wouldn't have told him to get up on the pipes before her, leaving her alone in the horde of undead flooding into the tunnels. She wouldn't have blasted a hole in the zombie that bit straight into the meat of his calf. She wouldn't have tried to help him when he fell, though her deteriorating vision made that nearly impossible, anyway. Instead, Rain would've tried to punch his clock the moment they first found refuge from the outbreak.

Kaplan was a friend. He always would be. Had Rain ever explicitly told him that before? Probably not. That bordered on mushy, in her opinion. She didn't like that.

"Don't you go apologizin' to me." She took a deep breath, flexing her fingers from where they were resting on her biceps. "...You know unnecessary 'sorry's bug the hell outta me, man."

"You were tryin' to complete the mission. I know damn well that if I were in your position, that's what I would've done." The exact details of what happened in the Red Queen's chamber were still largely unknown to Rain. She wasn't sure if wanted them. "You never could've guessed what was behind those doors. And hell, who'd trust a goddamn word from a machine that just went ahead and killed about five hundred people in one fell swoop?"

"I'm pretty sure that bitch was set on killin' all of us the moment we set foot down there." Her voice grew harder. "Y'know that ugly motherfucker that attacked the train? She didn't mention that thing because she wanted it to surprise us. Right before you showed up again, it was trying to get into the lab and she wanted Matt and Alice to kill me in exchange for the door code. If it weren't for you showing up... You wouldn't be talking to me right now because I wouldn't have a head on my damn shoulders."

Yo La Tengo - Deeper Into Deep Cuts

In case I don't mention it enough here — I do a "radio" show on Dublab every month as part of the Radio Free Aquarium Drunkard rock block. Every third Sunday night of every damn month! It's always a good time — me, Chad DePasquale, Jason Woodbury and a revolving door of special guests. The archives are here for your listening pleasure.

For May, I put together an hour's worth of Yo La Tengo deep cuts — b-sides, outtakes, live cuts, guest appearances, film scores, rarities, rejected Coca-Cola jingles. Good stuff, obviously, and the whole thing has been added to the main Aquarium Drunkard site now. (However, you probably want to listen to the entire four-hour RFAD on Dublab, since this month's special guest is Prairiewolf/Heat Warps dude Jeremy Erwin, who put together a monstrous mix of 1973-74 Electric Miles, all taped from the bandstand.)

This isn't really the big Yo La Tengo news this week, however. The BIG news is that Ira Kaplan will be throwing out the first pitch at a Mets' game in a couple of days. Kaplan has done many cool things in his lifetime, but I can only imagine that this is some kind of dream come true for him. Say hi to Mr. Met for us, Ira!
