Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Cast Interview: Tomori Kusunoki
How did you feel when you got the role?
Actually, I read Chainsaw Man at the recommendation of a friend, and when I read it he said, "If it's made into an anime, I want you to play Makima." Thinking back on it, that was really a ridiculous request (lol). As I read more and more, I became more and more immersed in the character, and even though it is a very difficult character, my desire to play Makima became stronger. And when it happened, I cried with joy. It felt like all my hard work had paid off.
What would you say are Makima's charms?
Her mysteriousness and her appearance are appealing, but I personally think Makima has really good "kindness timing." It's like she can tell Denji the exact words he wants to hear when he wants to hear them. She can see through everything completely, but she also has something mysterious about her that's beyond your reach. She's a character that I'm happy to see, but also a character whose appearance makes me nervous to see what's coming next.
How did you approach playing Makima, and what feelings did you tap into?
Makima doesn't get emotional or agitated, so I wanted to give off the impression, "I don't know what she's thinking, but she seems kind." All the actors in this work use a natural acting style. It's not to the level of narration, but Makima gives off a detached feeling; she suppresses the inflection of her speech. At the same time, I wanted to convey a vague and elusive feeling, like "Oh, was she being nice just now?" I often play young children and I had never played a role like Makima before, so at first I was trying to sound more mature. Director Nakayama and the staff told me that "My performance from my first audition is ideal," and "It's ok not to focus on sounding older," so I started acting more naturally.
How is recording going so far?
I believe I was able to achieve the Makima I was aiming for! My friend wanted me to play Makima, and I had read the original work thinking, "How would I say this line?" so I had a clear idea of the nuances I wanted to portray from the start. I was able to approach that, and even though there were gaps, I was able to try things out many times, so I think I created a Makima I was satisfied with.
What should we pay particular attention to in the early part of the story?
Makima's appearance in the first episode is striking, but my personal favorite is the scene where she tells Denji to say "aaah" at the rest stop. The udon noodles were moving so smoothly (laughs), I was shocked and thought, "This is how it is in anime!" I'd like for you to compare these types of small details to the original work. It's really amazing. It feels like, "This is how the director sees Chainsaw Man."
What was your impression of the original Chainsaw Man manga?
I haven't read a lot of manga since I was a child, and when it was recommended to me, I thought, "Maybe I'll enjoy it too?" but I ended up reading it in one sitting (laughs). The characters are charming, the illustrations are beautiful, and when you're reading it, each panel passes by like a movie. I think it became such a wonderful work because everything works well together. To me, the most appealing thing about it is that it seems like it's easy to understand, but it's not. You keep flipping through the pages, wondering, "What is the true meaning of this line or this scene?" It was like watching a movie, and before I knew it, I had finished reading it.
What are the highlights of the animated version of Chainsaw Man, now that it's finally airing?
We haven't seen the final version yet, but it looks like a lot of effort has been put into it. The battle scenes have a great impact, and even small moments like Makima's "mune dau" are reproduced in minute detail. The real thrill of anime is movement, so I want people to enjoy it thinking, "So this is how they moved in that scene in the original work!"
Do you have a message for the fans?
This is the anime everyone has been waiting for! Everyone's enthusiasm is so strong that Chainsaw Man trends whenever information is released, and the production side is working on it with just as much love. I feel that kind of love as I play Makima. Please look forward to Chainsaw Man, made with everyone's love.
Translation notes:
(笑)indicates laughter, so I translated it as (laughs).
Tomori describes Makima's "優しくしてくるタイミング" (literal, being-kind-timing) as her charm point, which I translated to "kindness timing"
Tomori says Makima "感情変化がなくて" literally meaning her emotions don't change, but I translated this into "doesn't get emotional," which sounds more natural but still conveys the same meaning.
Tomori quotes the staff and director as saying "最初のテープオーディションが理想", literally "first audition tape is ideal," I specified they meant her vocal performance from her first audition tape.
Translated "年齢感" (literal: age-feeling) to "sounding older".
"ムネダウ" is a direct quote from Makima, and I'm pretty sure she is referring to how they animated her saying the quote specifically, so I opted to just leave it romanized and untranslated.

Blog #4 : Eve's Bayou
I don’t think that a lot of people would consider Eve’s Bayou a horror film – but I would whole-heartedly disagree. It’s just a different version of horror. It’s not blood or gore or jump scares or a mystical entity coming to kill everyone in their sleep, or wielding a chainsaw, or a knife – but it is, without a doubt, horror.
It’s everyday horror. It’s the horror of lost innocence, and the horror of growing too fast into womanhood, the horror of a breakdown of a family – the horror of decisions and consequences.
For starters, the father (Samuel L. Jackson) is truly terrible and the real monster and horror in this film. Dude is legit just cheating in plain sight! There is no masking what is going on from the get-go. The opening party scene and the wildin’ dancing he was doing with another man’s wife – in front of his *own* wife. And friends. And Family. It was nuts.
Then cut to the scene where he gets caught by his youngest daughter actually cheating with the other woman and you understand just what this character is about. Add that into the various ways in which he ropes in or disregards his family while he’s cheating. Like again, leaving the youngest daughter in the car! All while he makes “house calls” to the ladies of the community – and we be knowin’ what they be doin’.
Like. He’s truly terrible. And I think this behavior sets the tone and propels the events of the story forward.
The catalyst of the story, is to an extent, left ambiguous. What we know for sure is that there is a kiss between the father and daughter (super gross). (Not to mention the behind-the-scenes grossness that at the time of filming, Meagan Good was only, like, 14 and Samuel L. Jackson… was not). The audience is given two different version of events about what occurred – that of the daughter (he kissed her) and that of the father (she kissed him). And while there are certain clues throughout the movie that could aid or guide a person to think one way or the other, it is left to the viewers to decide which version they agree with.
But to that I say – it doesn’t really matter who kissed who – because who initiated the kiss is not the same as who is at fault for the kiss. And there is a difference.
The father was 100% at fault for that kiss. Part of the great discussion we had in class about this film centered around the idea that he was pulling away from the family at the same time as the oldest child and daughter began to mature into womanhood. We see this throughout the film from the first scene where she wanted to differentiate herself from the others, her getting her first period, and when she started to change her look and wear makeup.
I felt like this transformation of the daughter – while a normal part of growing up – morphed into something truly horrifying. A young girl in a rush to grow up and who would do anything to keep her father and her family together.
And this event transformed the lives of the entire family. The oldest daughter was sent away and the father died. However, the youngest daughter – only ten years old – believes that the magic she performed to get back at her father (as she believed her sister) killed him – forever changing her life as well.
While the movie was not a typical horror / slasher fic – it shows that true horror can exist in the daily lives and decisions each one of us faces – and has the ability to affect those around us as well. It shows the horror of the loss of innocence and growing up too fast.

❝ why are you doing this ? ❞ + denji !!
Tumblr media
that most people would dream of. there are numerous propaganda on being a public safety devil hunter, the perks that come along with it & the fact that anyone could be a hunter is a type of dream that appeals to the masses. however, not everyone is yoshida hirofumi. yoshida could provide several explanations like a rope being thrown down a window as to why he does this. but he's the type that decides to remain as a tightly lid jar.
he could for all intense & purposes he could become a taxi, not easy to flag down or even pay for a fare. yoshida gives him a faint smile & a tilt of his head. the taller male is curious why denji would question him even if he hadn't given any answers yet. ❛ why so curious, denji? ❜ the blonde hadn't shown any interest in him until now so he wonders if something could have spark the idea of trying to figure him out. yoshida would love to be a puzzle, hard to fit the pieces together until the whole pictures becomes connected. if they were in another world he assumes he would have an idea of what normal life looks like. the only things he know of are hunting supernatural creatures, the ichor that stains his hands, & the smile that he uses as a mask.
❛ i'm here to protect you. ❜ he knows denji would believe it but he truly wants the best for him. to understand what laughter & being a regular high school student. it was not a luxury he could afford, but he would grant for denji. yoshida doesn't seem to think threatening him is the move at least not yet. ❛ i' want you to be less careless, the public can't find out about you. it's like a superhero move. ❜ he attempts to string some sort of buzz that would steer denji's way of thinking to his. he can't bring himself to tell him the whole truth, so he would stop denji. he would the roadblock to denji's biggest reveal: he's chainsaw man.
❛ is there something you want from me?❜

Mini Fanfic #788: After a Cliff Falling Experience (SSBU X Persona 5)
3:40 p.m. at Smash Mansion's Living Room.........
It was a relaxing, peaceful day at the mansion for the Phantom Thieves (Shiho and Lavenza included) as they watch some TV together. That is until......
'Door Open'
Pit: (Weakly Made his Way to the Living Room While Being Covered in Ashes) I'm.....hoooooome......(Fells Down on the Floor in Exhaustion)
'THUD'
Phantom Thieves: (Eyes Widened in Complete Shock Once They've Seen Pit Lay on the Ground) PIT!?
Makoto: Oh my god! (Immediately Makes her Way to Pit Along with the Others) Are you okay!? (Starts Helping Pit Back Up With Ren's Assistance)
Pit: ('Groans a Bit in Pain') Yeah......I think so....
Futuba: Dude, what happened to you?
Ann: Yeah. And why are you covered in ashes?
Lavenza: Were you hit by a nearby fire perhaps?
Pit: Not exactly.....I was uhh....(Starts Rubbing the Back of his Head Back and Forth While Chuckling a bit Awkwardly) Kind of, sort of got thrown off a cliff......
Phantom Thieves: You WHAT!!?
Yusuke: Who on Earth would do such a thing!?
Pit: I dunno....Some guy name Kazuya or some-
Ryuji: Waitwaitwait! You said Kazuya?
Shiho: As in THE KAZUYA MISHIMA!?
Pit: Uh....I think that's what his me is, yeah.
Ryuji: (Eyes Widened in Complete Shock as He's Almost Speechless) Holy fucking shit.......
Shiho: (Covers her Mouth in Complete Shock) Oh my god.....
Ann: (Turns Ryuji and Shiho in a Not of Confusion) You guys know him or something?
Ryuji: KNOW HIM!? That's the guy from Tekken!?
Shiho: He's the guy with literal devil powers!!!
Lavenza: (Eyes Widened in Genuine Surprise) Oh my.....
Ren: Ah yeah.....Tekken. (Turns to Ryuji) I remember you telling me about it that time school. (Turns to Pit) What makes you wanna go after that guy?
Pit: Well, for starters, we really haven't heard from Ganondorf all day yesterday. So Kirby and I decided to look for him all night. Once we eventually arrived at this....Volcanic Mountain looking place, the first thing we saw was that Kazuya guy carrying Ganondorf to a cliff and throwing off there.
Ryuji: (Eyes Widened in Complete Shock) FOR REAL!?
Haru: (Couldn't Believe What She's Hearing) I-I don't understand! Why would he do such a thing!?
Pit: I'm not entirely sure myself, but he did say something about wanting to fight worthy opponents or whatever.
Yusuke: So he's like Ryu then?
Ryuji: Yes......
Shiho: ......And no..... He's way more cold and ruthless than Ryu is in his Messatsu Form.
Ryuji: And that's all because the whole Mishima Family in general was messed up from the start.....
Ann: (Turns to Ryuji and Shiho) How do you two know all of this?
Ryuji: Shiho and I used to play a lot Tekken growing up.
Shiho: (Smiles Softly at her Girlfriend) You should play it with us sometime, Ann. It's really fun.
Ann: (Shrugs While Smiling at her Girlfriend) Sure. I'm down.
Makoto: Guys, we're going off topic here! (Turns Back to Pit) How exactly did you gotten yourself like this? Did you.....
Pit: Yeah....I tried to fight myself, but...beat me to the punch. (Winces a bit in Pain While Placing His Hand on his Stomach) literally.... And then after that, he tries throwing Kirby off the cliff too-
Everyone: He WHAAAAAAAAAAAAT!?
Pit: (Gets Startled by Everyone's Sudden Outburst Before Speaking Again) Y-Yeah. After I got beaten up and thrown off a cliff, he immediately grabs Kirby by the head and threw him out there too!
Futuba: (Had Enough) OKAY, SERIOUSLY!? What is with this guy and throwing people off CLIFFS!!!?
Pit: That's what I wanted to know!! It's like he has some kind of sick, twisted enjoyment out of it too! I even saw a glimpse of him smirking while I was falling!
Ryuji: I mean, he was thrown off a cliff when he was six. So.......
Futuba: (Starts Pinching her Nose in Disbelief) Oh my freaking God........
Makoto: (Turns to Pit) Pit, do you have any idea where Kirby must've fallen down to once you were on the ground?
Pit: I.... can't say that I do really. All I remembered is seeing was Kazuya preparing to toss Kirby off there with me. After that, I blackouted....
Ren: Wait a minute. Couldn't Kirby fly or-
Ann: I'mma kill him.
Ren/Makoto/Pit: (Slowly Turn their Heads at Ann with a Surprised Look on Each of their Faces) What?
Ann: (Turns to the Trio With Anger in Her Eyes) You heard me. I don't know who this Kazuya guy is and I don't care at this point!! I am going to find the jackass and pulverize him myself!!
Shiho: (Turns to Ann with a Determined Look on her Face) I'll go with you.
Ann: (Gently Grab Both of Shiho's Hands) No, Shiho. I don't want him to hurt you.
Shiho: (Gently Squeezes Ann's Hands) It's okay, Ann. I may not have Personas like you guys, but I've been training for a while now. I can fight too.
Ann: ('Sighs in Defeat') Fine. But you are staying right by my side in all of this, alright?
Shiho: (Nodded in Agreement) Right.
Ryuji: (Turns to Girls With Anger in his Eyes as Well) I'm going too! I don't give a damn he has crazy devil powers! Ain't no way I'm letting him get away with hurting our friends like that!!! And maybe even Ganondorf!!
Yusuke: You know.....(Puts on a Dark Look in his Eyes) It has been a long time since I've used my blade in action.....
Haru: (Has a Darken Look on her Eyes as Well) Couldn't agree more.....My axe has gotten quite dull as of late.....
Morgana: Normally I don't join in on the violence bandwagon immediately....(Puts on a Anger, Determined Look on his Face) But patience be damn! That devil's paying the piece!!
Haru: Well said, sweetie!!
Morgana: (Turns to Lavenza) Lavenza, you're coming with us?
Lavenza: (Already Has a Darken Look on her Face as Well) Of course.....I will punish thee for his cruel and thoughtless actions that was stow upon our two companions. And I will not hesitate to use my full potential in the process. In other words.....(Summons a Blue Colored Chainsaw on the Palm of Her Hands With a Loud Ripping Sound to Boot) The bastard will pay.
Futuba: (Angrily Pumps her Fist Up in the Air) AH YEAH! Let show that punk who's boss!!
Morgana: (Turns to Futuba) Futuba, you don't even know how to fight.
Futuba: (Pours at Morgana) Oh yes I do! Big sis Sae has already taught me the ropes of Self Defense and everything!
Ryuji: We can talk about that later! Right now..... (Points at the Front Door Fiercely) LET'S GET HIS SORRY ASS!!
Everyone: YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!
Makoto: THAT'S ENOUGH!
Makoto stomps her feet to the ground loud enough to get the rest of the Phantom Thieves' attention.
Makoto: ('Sigh') Calm down and think rationally on this, people! We can't go out there and recklessly fight him like that! He could be powerful enough to stop ALL OF US for all we know!
Ren: Makoto's right, guys. And fighting him is not our main focus at the moment. What we need to do right now is find Kirby and bring him back home.
Lavenza: (Stares at the Couple for a Brief Second Before Sighing in Defeat) The Joker and Queen are right....(Makes the Chainsaw Magically Disappear Out Thin Air) It would be foolish of all of us if we rush in without a proper plan of some kind. We must find Kirby at once.
Ryuji: But how are we gonna him in a huge ass town like this? He could anywhere for all we know!
?????: Poyo!
Ryuji: Hey, Kirby. But as I was saying, I- ('GASPS')
Everyone in the room immediately turns around and sees Kirby happily waving at them.
Kirby: Poyo! Poyo!~
Everyone: (Smiles Brightly at the Smiling Pink Puffball) KIRBY!!~
And with that, everyone (with the exception of Ren, Makoto, and Pit) immediately rushes over to Kirby and express how worried and happy they are about his whereabouts and return.
Makoto: (Watches Everyone in the Background While Sighing in Relief) Well....at least Kirby's back home.
Ren: (Smiles Softly) And not a spec of ashes in his body.
Pit: ('Sighs in Relief and Happiness') I'm so glad......I thought I would actually lose him forever. I would've been really pathetic if that were to happen....
Ren: (Eyes Widened at What Put Just Said) You would've been what now?
Makoto: (Turns to Pit with Worry in her Eyes) Pit, what are you talking about?
Pit: Oh....Well, before or....maybe after Kazuya threw me off of a cliff, he...calls "pathetic".......(Starts to Frown Sadly) And I'm starting think he's rig-
Ren/Makoto: NO HE'S NOT, PIT!!
Ren: Don't believe a SINGLE word from his mouth!!
Makoto: You are NOT pathetic, Pit! And you never will be!
Pit: B-But I lost a fight against him! A-And I wasn't even strong enough to protect Kirby.....
Ren: But Kirby's fine now. He knew he was able to float and use that opportunity to fly away safely.
Pit: I-I mean.... You're right, but-
Makoto: (Gently Place her Hands on Pit's Shoulders) But nothing, Pit. We know what happened to the both of you last night was terrible, but you still did everything you could to stop that man regardless of how strong he was at the time and we couldn't be anymore proud. So please.....(Gently Hugs Pit Lovingly) Don't ever think that way about yourself again.....
Pit: (Almost at a Loss of Words) You guys.....(Tears Starts Falling Down From his Eyes) ('Sniff') I'm sorry.....('Sniff') We didn't mean to worry you....
Ren: (Joins in on the Hug) Hey man, you have nothing to apologize for here.
Makoto: Ren's right. We're just happy that you and Kirby are back home safe.
Ren: We love you, Pit. (Kiss the Top of Pit's Head) Always.
Pit: I....('Sniff') (Gently Hugs Ren and Makoto Back) I love you guys too.....('Sniff') So much.........

The Future of the Final Girl
Tumblr media
“She is the one who encounters the mutilated bodies of her friends and perceives the full extent of the horror and of her own peril; who is chased, cornered, wounded; whom we see scream, stagger, fall, rise, and scream again. She alone looks death in the face, but she also finds the strength either to stay the killer long enough to be rescued or to kill him herself.” [Clover, Men, Women and Chainsaws].
As women watching horror films through the lens of the male gaze, we are often encouraged to place ourselves in the inappropriate kitten heels of the terrorised girl running screaming from the killer. This girl has become a horror staple, the one we can root for, hitch our hopes onto. This girl, unlikely as she seems, will provide the eventual satisfying final blow to whichever murderous villain has slain everyone else.
She is the Final Girl.
As feminism progresses, so must the reflection of women in the media; much of horror is historically misogynistic, which is all the more reason to encourage the effects of female empowerment to trickle through to the way women are represented in horror films. There is a change happening, slowly but surely - the Final Girl is morphing from shrieking, inept victim, to armed, prepared badass. For a comprehensive overview of this mutation, we can examine and score a selection of films from each decade since the beginning of this Final Girl phenomenon and track her progression right up to the present.
“Why not more and better female killers, and why not Pauls as well as Paulines?”  [Clover, Men, Women and Chainsaws].
Psycho (Alfred Hitchcock, 1960)
Tumblr media
Every horror enthusiast knows that Hitchcock changed the game when he killed off Marion Crane, who - until the infamous shower scene – viewers suppose to be the heroine of Psycho. Instead, the film’s true Final Girl is Marion’s sister Lila, a tenacious, petite woman who arrives late to the party bearing no distinguishable personality besides being Marion’s concerned sibling.
Tumblr media
Despite the disapproving way Lila speaks about Marion and her light fingers, she is determined to uncover the truth about what happened to her. She does this by immediately roping in a man to assist her: Marion’s boyfriend Sam. Unlike, Lila, Sam’s actions are helpful and smart – he drives them to the Bates Motel, insists on inspecting motel logbook to find Marion’s name, and even distracts creepy Norman Bates while Lila snoops around Marion’s old hotel room (it should be noted that she discovers nothing of import).
Eventually however, despite the ineptitude that she has displayed throughout the rest of her screen time, it is Lila that, while hiding, stumbles upon the corpse of Norman’s mother, thereby accidentally revealing his ‘psychosis’. As a starter Final Girl, Lila is pretty average. She screams and runs about, prattles on about her inaccurate theories, and annoys the hell out of every male character she interacts with.
Final Girl Rating: 4/10
 Suspiria (Dario Argento, 1977)
Tumblr media
Italian maestro of horror direction Dario Argento is notorious for his gratuitous, often near-unwatchable depictions of slaughtered women. His most famous films form a trilogy, known as ‘The Three Mothers’, consisting of Suspiria (1977), Inferno (1980), and The Mother of Tears (2007). The most famous of these is the first; Suspiria immerses the viewer in a visceral, melodramatic murder-mystery. Within the first few minutes, a young blonde woman is being terrorised, chased, strangled, stabbed, and eventually made to plummet through a glass ceiling, to be hanged before a (different) screaming lady.
Tumblr media
I will dub this character, often a feature of the horror formula, the ‘First Girl’. The First Girl is both a decoy and a necessity. In the same way that Psycho’s First Girl Marion makes way for Final Girl Lila, Suspiria’s Pat makes way for Suzy. Suzy is a shy, American sweetheart with a serious case of underdeveloped personality disorder. As a foreign student coming to join a German dance school, she is the perfect outsider, made evident from the beginning, when a few of the other girls are immediately snarky towards her.
Tumblr media
It takes a while for Suzy to cotton on to the sinister goings-on behind the scenes of the Tanz Dance Academy, partly due to the mysterious and sudden malady that has her bedridden and unable to participate in classes very soon after she arrives. The creepy doctor prescribes her nightly doses of alcohol to help her sleep, and it isn’t until token ‘Foolish Friend’ Sara points out that she can’t be roused once she’s drunk it, that she realises it might be laced with something else.
Inevitably, after Sara’s mysterious demise, Suzy is the only girl left in the school clued in enough to understand that it’s all a front for a murderous witch coven and must try to defeat the evil. As you may have gathered from the poster, she does this mostly by creeping through the darkened corridors with a lamp, slowly opening doors and sweeping back curtains until she suffers another jump scare and screams.
“The Final Girl looks for the killer, even tracking him to his forest hut or his underground labyrinth, and then at him, therewith bringing him, often for the first time, into our vision as well.” [Clover, Men, Women and Chainsaws].
Although it is relatively unclear whether or not Suzy does succeed in destroying the coven altogether, it is probable that the fire she sets does consume everyone inside the academy. She also earns points for tracking down an outside opinion from a local professor not associated with the school to learn how to take down witches. Still, a fairly standard performance; Argento gives us a disturbingly young-looking Final Girl, whose capabilities do not extend much beyond childlike ignorance. She is perpetually stricken by her own paralyzing fear, and only finds the courage to battle the evil right at the last second, by which time her friends are already dead.
Final Girl Rating: 5/10
 Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978)
“The Final Girl of the slasher film is presented from the outset as the main character. The practiced viewer distinguishes her from her friends minutes into the film. She is the Girl Scout, the bookworm, the mechanic.” [Clover, Men, Women and Chainsaws].
Tumblr media
Halloween’s Final Girl is perhaps the most notorious of all time, Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie, a smart, introverted babysitter overshadowed by her two promiscuous and outlandish friends. As a sexually inexperienced, rule-following young woman, she is the epitome of what it takes to be a Final Girl, as her survival strategy will not be muddied by drugs, alcohol, or lust. Although Laurie must suffer the horror of seeing her friends be slaughtered and their corpses displayed in macabre dioramas, she is feisty enough to last until the very end. She even manages to fight her way through Halloween II, using her past experience to chase off the dogged Michael Myers a second time.
Laurie is not given a lot of backstory, but as successful Final Girls go, she is one of the first, and the best. She endures the horror, but does not let it weaken her. She channels the injustice of her friends’ murders into anger, and strikes the killer down, very nearly succeeding in killing him before she is rescued. Arguably, Laurie paves the way for future Final Girls in the 80’s boom of female-driven horror, out of which spring Alice of Friday the 13th (Cunningham, 1980), and Nancy of Nightmare on Elm Street (Craven, 1984).
Final Girl Rating: 7/10
 Alien (Ridley Scott, 1979)
Tumblr media
From the outset of Alien, it is made clear that the only rational voice amongst the crew of the Nostromo spaceship is Ellen Ripley, the second in command officer. There are two females amongst the seven members of the Alien cast (not including Jonesy the cat): Ripley and Lambert, and they are polar opposites. Lambert is the embodiment of weakness; actress Veronica Cartwright was told by director Ridley Scott that her character was ‘the audience's fears; a reflection of what the audience is feeling’. As such, she tackles the unfortunate situation of a rogue alien slithering about the ship eating crew members by making rash, stupid decisions, crying, shrieking, and being generally unhelpful.
Tumblr media
Lambert is merely a foil, however, for the strong, smart, rebellious performance given by Ripley, the lone survivor of the Nostromo - along with Jonesy. She alone, with her unwavering pragmatism, her cunning strategic mind, and her aptitude for wielding a flamethrower, manages to outsmart the terrifying alien creature, and jet off to safety in the ship’s emergency shuttle.
Treading into and deepening the prints made by Laurie’s dainty feet comes Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley, a Final Girl to be revered. She was so impressive to audiences world over that she earned herself three sequels.

 The Descent (Neil Marshall, 2005)
Tumblr media
This early noughties British flick was an innovation when it emerged due to its all female cast. The Descent follows six adventurous young women who decide to go caving as a bonding exercise following an awful tragedy. The husband and child of one of the group (Sarah), die in a car accident, and in a valiant attempt to move on, she decides to squeeze herself through some narrow underground passages with her friends. Unbeknownst to the rest of the group however, Juno, the organiser of the expedition, has led them into an entirely unexplored cave system, hoping that in discovering the way through, they would all be brought closer together. Unfortunately, this plan goes awry when the passage they came through caves in behind them, and they have no idea of the way out. Left with no other choice, they push further into the caves, only to discover that they are not the only creatures alive down there.
The basis of this film is, unusually, based on the complexity of female relationships. Rather than deriving conflict from sexual dynamics, The Descent uses Juno and Sarah’s strained friendship to maximise the dramatic tension.
“...other filmmakers figured that the only thing better than one beautiful woman being gruesomely murdered was a whole series of women being gruesomely murdered.” [Schoell, Stay Out Of The Shower].
Juno’s immediate reaction to Sarah’s initial misfortune is to run from it, meaning that later in the film, when the group meet to ‘descend’ into the caves, her motivation is guilt. She is desperate to make amends for her cowardice in the face of Sarah’s grief, which is why she makes the foolish decision to lead them all into a death trap.
Tumblr media
When Juno explains her reasoning to Sarah moments after they become trapped, Sarah is unmoved by her apologies, and thus the circle of their six-way female bond is broken. From that moment on, each woman has to fend for themselves. By the end of the film, Sarah has accumulated enough reasons to wound Juno and leave her to the mercy of the ravenous ‘crawlers’ while she scrambles for escape. Juno cowered away when Sarah needed her after her family were killed, she led them into an underground labyrinth filled with monsters with no escape, she accidentally murdered Beth with a pick-axe thinking she was one of the creatures, and finally, it is heavily implied that she had been having an affair with Sarah’s husband, Paul. The case for her death sentence in comparison to Sarah, who lost everything and was unwillingly lured into a monster-filled hellscape, is strong; even we, as an audience, want to see her devoured.
The downfall of this mostly progressive horror narrative is that it does, inevitably, play on a fight for a man’s affections. There is no need for the suggested affair between Juno and Paul given all the other reasons there are for Sarah to sacrifice her in the final few minutes, yet it is slipped in as an unnecessary extra motivator. As Final Girls go, Sarah is an inspiration. To go into the cave at all would be a nightmarish adventure for most women, particularly since she is still reeling from the gruesome deaths of her husband and child. But not only does Sarah keep it together in the face of Juno’s treachery, the deaths of all of her friends, and the horrifying ‘crawlers’ that lurk in the caves, she lurks in wait in muddy pools, wields pick-axes, flares, and grapple hooks, spares nobody mercy, and fights her way, bloodied and wild-eyed back to the surface.
Tumblr media
 Final Girl rating: 8/10.
 Halloween (Green, 2018)
Tumblr media
In recent years, the most positive representation of women in horror is a Reformed Final Girl: Jamie Lee Curtis from Halloween, who reprises her role as Laurie in a continuation story of the same name. In this 2018 Halloween, Laurie is a weathered, tough old woman with her own daughter Karen, and granddaughter Allyson. It is revealed quickly that Karen was removed from her mother’s guardianship by the state as a result of the strict, overbearing and military parenting style of Laurie the Myers veteran. As a result, Karen and her mother do not see eye to eye; this is the central conflict of the film behind the horror, as Laurie is still convinced that Myers is alive and coming for them all (spoiler: he is), whereas Karen is strongly of the opinion that her mother is deranged from the trauma of watching her friends be murdered as a teenager.
Tumblr media
There is, of course, great appeal to the idea of the terrorised Final Girl growing up to be a shotgun-wielding badass with a fully fortified house and zero tolerance for unexpected visitors. My problem with this aged-up Laurie is that, despite how she clawed her way through three films to survive, her life, as it turns out, was hardly worth living. By the end of the film Karen and Laurie are back on good terms, but it is implied that they spent most of Karen’s life estranged from one another. Laurie does not have friends, or a partner, only a drinking problem and a psychotic paranoia about a killer returning to slaughter her once and for all. Props to Laurie for being smarter than everyone else around her that underestimated Michael Myers’ ability to spring back up after being stabbed, shot, or blown up, but I can’t help but feel that as a representative of the Future of the trope, she is almost there, but not quite.
Final Girl Rating: 9/10
To consider the future of the Final Girl is to consider the future of female representation. As a character, she is in one way admirable, and in another, a tool to provide public satisfaction of bloodlust. The horror spectator should ask oneself what it is that they truly want to see from a protagonist, particularly a female one, and why. The Final Girl should be a weapon with which the viewer can arm themselves, a lens in front of the most unspeakable situations of horror through which anyone can align their own eye.
The Final Girl has the potential to represent all women, to define our strength and capability through her response to the worst catastrophe, and the resilience of moving on from it, to enjoy the life she has fought for. As feminism progresses, and the constraints of male-authored  perversity are lifted from the horror genre, we will surely begin to see more Ripleys, and less Lilas. We will be able to cheer on our Final Girl as she takes ownership of her body, as opposed to having it plundered by knives and saws. The Future Final Girl will rise up against both the killer, and the oppression of generic, outdated horror tropes, and slash her way through to a more hopeful, equal future.

Quick little request if you don't mind ❤️: either Bubba teaching his S/O how to use his chainsaw or he finds them trying it out and his reaction
Here you go! Hope you guys enjoy! (FYI for those who don’t know Bubba by his name- he’s Leatherface) ‘A’ for the masterlist under Leatherface
Tumblr media
As soon as he heard your footsteps he stopped what he was doing and turned to face you. You walked over towards him as he held his chainsaw in his hand, not having turned it on yet. Your eyes locked with frightened ones of a boy who was kneeling on the ground, his legs looked to be terribly wounded as blood poured out around them. “Why him?” You asked, watching as Bubba eyed you nervously, you knew he didn’t like it when you were anywhere near his ‘work area’, especially the chainsaw.
Bubba shrugged and put down his chainsaw before taking your shoulders in his hands and steering you to the direction of the door. “Wait, Bubba, I want to help.” You told him, frowning when he shook his head.
Bubba simply pointed to the chainsaw and all the tools he had laying around and then looked back at you with a clear message: he didn’t want you to get hurt. “Then teach me how to use the chainsaw.” You suggested, taking him by surprise.
Bubba almost forgot that there was a man a few feet away crying when you said that. With a sigh he turned around and walked towards the man who was whimpering and sobbing, begging for his life. Grabbing a pair of brown gloves, Bubba handed them to you and watched you put them on. With a small grunt, he coaxed you over with his index finger and carefully handed you the chainsaw. “Wait.” He stated, going over to his desk area and finding a pair of goggles and a hard hat, bringing them over to you. Before you knew it, you looked like a construction worker, the bright orange hard hat, nearly fit and the goggles almost slid off, but Bubba tightened them so you fit in them.
He came behind you and placed your hands where they should go, with his own. “Pull.” He murmured, pointing to the starter rope. With one hand, you grabbed the rope and pulled it, nothing happened. “Too slow.” Bubba shook his head and gestured as to how to pull it right: you have to pull it faster.
With a nod of your head, you grabbed the rope again and pulled it really fast before hearing the engine roar to life, the blades on the end spinning around. “ I did it!” You smiled, making Bubba whine. You were honestly too cute for the serial killer sometimes.
“Please don’t kill me! I swear I won’t tell anyone about this!” The man continued to cry, lifting his hands in a praying motion. You looked up at Bubba and you could see the annoyance in his eyes as he stared at the man.
“May I?” You asked, nodding your head over to the victim. Bubba thought about it for a moment before deciding to let you have some fun with your lesson of the day. With a curt nod, he stood back and watched as you quite literally cut a man in half. Bubba couldn’t help but get slightly aroused at the sight of you killing someone while using his chainsaw and looking so good while doing it. He was proud in a way too. He had to look away when you turned off the machine and set it down, sliding the goggles off your face and the hard hat tipped off your head and fell to the ground.
“At least he’s quiet now.” You huffed, the heat of the outdoors making you perspire a bit. You eyed the dead body carefully before looking back at him just as he was unlacing his mask to take it off and kiss you.

The speed of the lightning gun is 12.5 times that of theirs
It only takes 12 seconds for the maintenance personnel to remove the nuts of the four tires, because the speed of this kind of lightning gun wrench can reach 25,000 rpm in 1 minute. Its power comes from compressed air, which is compared with a standard pneumatic wrench with 2000 revolutions per minute. Lithium Tools Factory wholesale The speed of the lightning gun is 12.5 times that of theirs.
This speed can remove a nut within 0.2 seconds to remove the nut of the tire. If using a standard pneumatic wrench. Instead of a thunder gun, the 12 seconds to change the tire will turn into three minutes. In the 19th century, there is a legendary story in which the protagonist is named John Henry, a worker who built a railway. This worker was the strongest worker at the time. His job was to drive iron nails into the railroad tracks. At that time, no one could compare He, then a kind of power tool was born, the appearance of the air hammer made people no longer need to use brute force to drive nails.
The worker fearlessly challenged the air hammer, and the man-machine war began. Who can beat faster? The final result is that human Henry won. However, due to his excessive physical strength, he died within a short period of time. Of course, this is just a legend.
In today's era, even the commonly used hammers and nails cannot escape the elimination of human progress. The emergence of a new power tool nail gun, its speed is at least ten times that of a hammer, and it can shoot 100 nails per minute, far exceeding the efficiency of manpower. And our most common chainsaw uses a two-stroke starter engine. Although it is small, it has a powerful engine that can drive equipment such as lawn mowers and motorcycles. When using an electric saw, the operator only needs to pull the rope to start the starter and drive the steel teeth on the saw chain to cut the wood. The advent of these electric tools has revolutionized the construction industry.
Of course, in addition to the work of manufacturing, power tools can also be used to save lives. Power tools can also achieve surgical accuracy. In the past, surgeons switched from major resection operations to minimally invasive surgery. In order to achieve this, doctors Need technical support. Technology often means the need for power tools. We all know that surgeons will use surgical blades to make incisions when performing operations. The problem is that such incisions will bleed. Now there is a power tool for surgery. Its needle tip is heated, and it can cut and coagulate wounds with high temperature like a scalpel. Coagulation means hemostasis, which is very important to the surgeon. It is driven by humans to turn materials into endless high-tech equipment, and inject real power into power tools.

Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Cast Interview: Shougo Sakata
How did you feel when you were cast as Aki?
I was half happy and half in disbelief. In my audition tape, I tried not to overact, and I made it to the studio audition. I acted very naturally there, and I felt like the face-to-face audition also went well, so I had my hopes up a little (laughs). There was a bit of time between the audition and when the results came out where I had started to give up, but then I received the response that I passed the audition. The best way to say it is, I was really surprised, but I'm going to do my best to adapt the manga I love into an anime.
What's your impression of Aki; what about him appeals to you?
My impression of Aki is that he's "a normal person." He can deal with all types of people evenly. Aki also wants revenge against a specific devil, but I like that Himeno-senpai provided a space for him to grow up properly. Aki is often said to be kind. He can't accept the misfortune that befell his family, so he can't accept the absurd things that happen to the people around him, so he tries to eliminate the cause. I think that looks like kindness to others. When he beats up Denji, whose very existence an absurdity, I think that was Aki's form of kindness. He believed that it would be better for Denji to give up than for him to lose his life.
How did you create Aki's voice?
Before recording the second episode, where he first appears, I worked really hard to figure out my acting approach, but director Nakayama said, "I want you to act the way the character would naturally and realistically talk. Dial back your acting a little bit." I took that advice, and from there I kept repeating through a process of trial and error, until one day the director said, "Your voice is like Aki's, so you don't need to perform too much." I remember I was very happy when he said that. After that, I was able to loosen up and act naturally.
What details do you focus on when you're acting?
Aki's speech doesn't include any superfluous details, and there are a lot of things that don't require emotion. What I'm conscious of is thinking naturally about "Who am I communicating this information to?" and acting naturally, like I'm drawing from how I normally talk. Lately, it's getting clearer and clearer where Aki is looking, who he is talking to, and what he is trying to convey. But I think I can still get closer to Aki, so I want to focus more!
What's the atmosphere like when you're recording?
The cast members are just like their characters (laughs). Fairouz-san starts conversations, Toya-kun suddenly loses focus, and Kusunoki-san speaks kindly to Toya-kun…Recording always progresses harmoniously, it's a great atmosphere. In particular, Toya-kun is really in sync with Denji, and I love it. No matter what anyone says, Toya-kun's Denji improvisations are one of the highlights. Fairouz-san's energetic, bright and funny energy is also the best, and Makima, played by Kusunoki-san, feels very fitting when you hear her voice. I think this is a result of Kusunoki's love for Makima.
What are Aki's highlights in the early part of the anime?
The way Aki takes out the cigarette is drawn in a really cool way, so please pay attention to it. I only saw it in the rehearsal footage, but the sequence is him tapping the box, taking out the cigarette, lighting the lighter with the hand still holding the box, and smoking it. I thought, "Are you going to draw that many details in the anime?" I was really excited and beyond surprised And… as for Aki, I also love his interactions with Himeno-senpai. Their intimate-feeling conversations are nice. The performance that I personally focused on was the scene where Aki's "ball" is kicked by Denji (lol). I studied vocal expression a lot, so please listen carefully!
Finally, do you have a message for the fans?
My honest thoughts are, I've been given a very important role, and I will play Aki in every episode to live up to the expectations of the fans. I will do my best to live up to the Aki Hayakawa that everyone imagines. I'll keep recording, so I would be happy if you could attend!
Translation notes:
It was hard to translate what the director said in a way that preserves the original meaning, a direct translation sounds a bit like it is an insult or a criticism. What Nakayama was saying was basically that Sakata's natural voice was already great for the role. The literal quote is "坂田くんは声帯がアキだから、「こう演じよう」としなくていい", so a more direct translation would be "Sakata-kun, because your voice is already Aki's, you don't need to perform like this." but that isn't the clearest. I went for more of a localization than a direct/exact translation to be clearer.
When Sakata says "肩の力を抜いて演じられるようになったのはそこからですね," a direct translation would be "I was able to act with my shoulders relaxed," meaning he was able to loosen up and act more naturally, but a direct translation doesn't convey that as well.
Translated "どんどん明確" as clearer and clearer, but a more literal translation would be "steadily becoming clearer," or "increasingly clearer."
Sakata says "中でも戸谷くんの演じるデンジはシンクロ率がとても高くて", which literally translates into saying that Toya and Denji have a "high synchronization rate," kind of using the language of mecha anime (how the pilot is synchronized with the mecha), but to be more clear I just translated it as "Toya-kun is really in sync with Denji"
"デンジな戸谷くん" would literally translate to Denji-like Toya-kun (using Denji's name as a na-adjective), but since the main point of the sentence was to highlight Toya's improv skills, I didn't translate it in that literal sense.
He literally says アキの「ボール」, so this feels like the best way to translate it.

The emergence of electric tools has changed the way human beings produce
With the continuous advancement of technology, more and more power tools have emerged to improve work efficiency and replace heavy physical tasks. It is no exaggeration to say that the emergence of power tools has changed the face of the world. Tools are instruments that give humans mechanical advantages. In the animal world, many birds and primates also use tools, but there is one thing that sets us apart from them, and that is power. Unlike other animals in the animal kingdom, we humans not only rely on physical strength, but can use other energy sources to drive tools.
We may not have superpowers, but we have power tools. Power tools cover all aspects of our lives in medical care, manufacturing, construction, rescue and so on. During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, factories used gas, steam and electricity to give tools more power. Since the 1960s, people have once again transformed power tools to enable them to be used in ordinary households. The global market share of power tools is 23.4 billion U.S. dollars. About 40% of them are from North America, 22% are from Asia, and 27% are from Europe. Power tools account for about 75% of all power tools sold.
The power of a power tool depends on how much voltage it can withstand. You can think of voltage as water pressure. The greater the pressure of water management, the stronger the jet of water. The same is true for voltage. The more volts in the tool, the greater the power the tool can generate. Getting sufficient voltage also means plugging in the power source, but the discovery of the battery changed everything. Battery-powered tools were first used on the moon in the 1960s. The Apollo astronauts needed a small hand-held electric drill to drill into the surface of the moon to collect soil samples, so engineers designed a special power tool battery pack. Since then, the cordless drill was produced. This unique invention was first applied to the handheld cordless vacuum cleaner launched in 1979. After that triggered the reform of household electric tools.
The power tools we know and use rely on human physical energy, electricity, gasoline and compressed air to operate, but the tools used by professionals are more powerful. In some car races, we will often see racing maintenance personnel use pneumatic wrenches to remove tires, because races have time constraints, they must race against time to save time. It only takes 12 seconds for the maintenance personnel to remove the nuts of the four tires, because the speed of the lightning gun wrench can reach 25,000 rpm in 1 minute. Its power comes from compressed air, which is compared with a standard pneumatic wrench with 2000 revolutions per minute. The speed of the lightning gun is 12.5 times that of them. This speed can remove a nut within 0.2 seconds to remove the nut of the tire. If using a standard pneumatic wrench. Who Says You Can't Go Home - Chapter 9
Darkwing Duck (90s series) fanfiction
Sequel to my recent fanfic The Other Side of Me
Summary: Down on his luck, the Negaverse Launchpad crashes at Launchpad’s parents looking for help. Launchpad, who has avoided visiting his family since he started working with Darkwing, returns in a panic to ensure his double isn’t causing trouble. And then it gets awkward.
Chapter 1
***
Ripcord stalked towards the hanger, his shotgun cradled in his arms. His emotions were in tatters after his conversation with Launchpad. Reliving the night he had nearly lost his son had been taxing, and had hurt as deeply as he knew it would. Yet Launchpad hadn’t reacted the way he’d expected. Ripcord had almost wanted his anger, or disappointment, or at the very least have him question how his father could let that happen to him. It would justify keeping his failure bottled up for so long. Instead, Launchpad had straight up forgiven him. Despite how badly he’d mucked up he’d been there for him as he struggled his way through the story. After all his son had done for his Negaverse double, and how much he was helping Drake and Gosalyn, Ripcord shouldn’t have expected anything less.
On top of all that, Negaduck had shown up. He’d come into his family’s home and attacked them. Thinking about his daughter getting chased by that maniac, and actually standing up to him enough to deal some real damage had Ripcord equally parts shaken and proud. Who knew how that would’ve turned out if Darkwing Duck hadn’t been there to protect her. His house was trashed. But Loopey had only a scratch and his family was safe. That had almost been enough for Ripcord to accept they’d defeated the so-called supervillian.
Until the Negaverse Launchpad had come crashing through their front door and collapsed at Birdie’s feet. He’d told them enough stories for Ripcord to know what Negaduck was capable of doing, even to the man he trusted to look after his daughter. Ripcord had felt him shaking against him when he’d hugged him. Negaduck had hurt him; he’d probably tortured him. And Ripcord could not let that stand.
The night he and Birdie had brought their son’s double home from hospital, after setting him up in Launchpad’s old room where he’d collapsed into a deep sleep, they’d sat down at the dining table and discussed well into the night what they were going to do with him. They’d decided he could stay. And they’d committed to being there for him the same as they would their own two children, had they been in a similar position, even though they were adults.
This was no longer because the Negaverse Launchpad reminded Ripcord of his son. Negaduck had hurt the young man Ripcord had spent the last two months getting to know. Whether it was helping him out in the hanger, or helping Birdie make dinner and trying not to break too many plates, which had him both annoyed at the crockery and apologetic. Or even the strange fit he’d got in over the rosebushes and Birdie had to talk him down from. He was a mix of aggression and vulnerability, but he’d always tried his hardest, in his own way, to do everything the McQuack’s asked of him. Seeing him trussed up, and hurt, and all a mess because he thought they’d be mad at him for something he had no control over broke Ripcord’s heart.
That was Negaduck’s fault. And this time he’d made the mistake of abusing Launchpad on the McQuack’s property. As far as Ripcord was concerned that meant he was well within his rights to do something about it.
The hanger lights were on. Negaduck was here alright. Ripcord hefted his shotgun and approached the open doors cautiously. He had only fired the gun once in its capacity for protecting his property and family and in that instance a blast up into the air had been enough. But Negaduck didn’t sound like the type of guy who’d be spooked by a bluff. He’d give him the option of walking out, sure. But if it came down to it, and the only way to protect his family was to use the gun, properly, he wouldn’t lose any sleep. Ripcord shook his head. “Supervillain. Hah. Let’s see how super he feels with a belly full of shot.”
Negaduck sat up on the workbench with the hanger’s first aid kid. A nearby cupboard was flung open, tools scattered about, despite the fact the first aid kid had been in the next one over with its door very clearly labeled. “Stupid Darkwing Duck has to be everywhere! Should’ve just slaughtered them where they stood, but no, I had to taunt the Pink Baroness’ mousy little double.” Negaduck wrapped a bandage around his shoulder as he griped. It was already stained pink. Loopey had stuck him good.
Ripcord raised the gun. “Negaduck.”
Negaduck looked up, eyed the shotgun, then grinned. “Oh look, it’s daddy. What do you want?”
Ripcord cocked the gun. “Stay away from my family, and Launchpad, and get the hell off my property!”
“So aggressive.” Negaduck tied off the bandage, taking his time, flexed his arm, then slid off the workbench. He patted the chainsaw where it sat beside him. “I’d hoped to stay a bit longer, do some redecorating. After that fiasco back at your house I was starting to think I’d have to resort to burning some planes to teach my Launchpad a lesson. Really don’t think that’s going to be as effective as it used to be.”
“What did you do to him?”
“Worried about your precious second son are you?”
“He’s back at the house. He’s safe now. But he was all trussed up, and…”
“What, and you care? Don’t waste your time worrying about that idiot. If you have to know, I strung him up and stuck him on a crate, then left him to see if he’d be game enough to do himself in. You know, whilst he wondered what I was doing over here to the family who’d been foolish enough to take in such a waste of space.”
Ripcord trigger finger twitched. Strung him up. That rope burn around his neck. “You bastard. You don’t get to touch that boy ever again, not whilst I have something to say about it. You hear me?”
“Please. That little trick wasn’t even my idea. That was something Launchpad came up with, back in the Negaverse. You know, when he was on my payroll and liked to torture people for fun. The guy he did it to actually swung. We left him for his family to find. So before you get all self-righteous on his behalf, ask him about that guy. Ask him about the guy he gutted because he tried to hurt my daughter, or the time I left him to deal with a half dozen Beagle Boys with nothing but a crowbar and he came back to me grinning and covered in blood.”
Ripcord’s stomach turned. “I… I’ve seen nothing like that in him.”
“Maybe all you want to see is your son. Ask him, I dare you. Actually, scratch that. I’ve got to teach that ungrateful bastard a lesson. Even if I can’t get him back to the Negaverse where he belongs, I’ve still got to make sure he knows who’s boss.” Negaduck yanked the chainsaw’s starter cord and it roared to life. It startled Ripcord out of his thoughts that, of course, there had to be some pretty terrible things Launchpad had done for Negaduck. “And guess who was fool enough to put himself in a position where I can do just that?”
Ripcord swung the shotgun so it pointed at Negaduck’s chest. “I’m giving you a chance! Get off our property.” He was going to have to use the gun. Properly. And even though this was the guy who’d hurt Launchpad, and he was dangerous, it hit him like a slam to the guts that he’d never had to do that before. And Negaduck was coming right for him.
The shotgun bucked as Ripcord squeezed the trigger. Negaduck swung the chainsaw straight into the shotgun’s barrel, and the two connected in a grinding flurry of sparks. The shot flew over Negaduck’s shoulder and the gun clattered from Ripcord’s hands. Ripcord snatched his hand back to his chest, he stepped back, stumbled, then sat down hard on the hanger floor. His breath came in ragged gasps as Negaduck towered over him, chainsaw idling between them.
Negaduck laughed. “Oh, sweetheart. You brought a shotgun to a chainsaw massacre? Big mistake.”
***
There was no time to argue. But everyone decided to do just that.
“Gosalyn, stay here with Birdie.”
“Dad!”
“My husband is being an idiot; I’m coming too.”
“We don’t even know where Negaduck’s gone. Dad probably doesn’t either.”
Amidst the chaos, the Negaverse Launchpad made eye contact with his counterpart. “He’s been trying to mess with me. If he can’t hurt your family, he’ll go for the planes.” They both bolted out the kitchen door.
“Launchpad, wait!” Darkwing yelled, probably after his Launchpad, but it was fair to assume his aggravation was directed at both of them.
“I don’t understand,” the Negaverse Launchpad said through chugging breaths as they ran for the hanger. “I told your dad Negaduck was dangerous. He always seemed so level-headed.” If Mr McQuack got hurt because of him. No. He couldn’t let that happen.
“Most of the time,” Launchpad shot back. They exploded through the hanger doors.
Negaduck stood over Ripcord, chainsaw raised. His beak split into a toothy grin. “Launchpad! Just in time to see what happens when you’re stupid enough to betray me.” He swiped the buzzing chainsaw down towards Ripcord’s arm, raised to shield his body from the blow.
The Negaverse Launchpad’s guts tightened, his muscles froze, and his leaden body jerked to an impotent halt. Negaduck was going to hurt hurt Mr McQuack. But it was Negaduck. He couldn’t stop him; he wasn’t strong enough.
“Don’t touch my dad!” Launchpad barreled past him and ploughed into Negaduck, chainsaw and all. Both men crashed into the maintenance desk and smashed it clean in two. Papers went flying, as well as fabric and feathers, and the chainsaw let out a horrible grating whine and stalled. Negaduck and Launchpad collapsed on top of each other. Neither of them moved.
The Negaverse Launchpad muscles loosened and he dropped to Ripcord’s side. “Mr McQuack, are you okay?”
Launchpad couldn’t see any blood or damage on the older man. But Ripcord’s breath came in ragged gasps and he all but hung off Launchpad’s arm, staggering as he dragged himself to his feet.
“Mr McQuack?”
Ripcord clung to him, but he couldn’t tear his eyes from his son. His voice cracked. “Launchpad?”
The crumpled pile of ducks heaved and Negaduck extricated himself. “Ow?” He hefted his chainsaw. Scraps of pale material were wrapped up around the blade, clogging up the works. The smell of burnt metal wafted into the air.
Launchpad supported Ripcord as he lurched over and collapsed at his son’s side, then he turned to Negaduck. “Back off.” Even though his voice shook, Negaduck glared at him and took a couple steps back.
Ripcord shook his son’s shoulders as tears filled his eyes. “Launchpad? Kiddo, come on. Don’t do this to me again, please.”
Launchpad groaned and sat up, a hand to his chest. His scarf was all but obliterated. His jacket was torn down the middle and a line of red speckled his exposed chest. Ripcord pawed at the jacket, pulling off scraps of material as he checked for further damage. “Dad, ow!” Launchpad looked down and winced. “Oh.”
“Son, I’m sorry. I was just trying to protect Launchpad.”
“That’s alright. Look, it’s only a scratch. Relatively speaking, you know, for a chainsaw.”
Ripcord choked over a sob and buried his face against Launchpad’s shoulder.
“Dad… hey, it’s alright, I’m still here.” Launchpad wrapped his arms around him and rubbed his back.
Birdie, Loopey, Darkwing and Gosalyn rushed into the hanger. Birdie took the Negaverse Launchpad’s place at her husband’s shoulder. “Rip? Babe, what were you thinking?”
“It’s okay, Mom,” said Launchpad. “He’s not hurt.”
Loopey placed herself in front of her parents and brother, as did Gosalyn, who then tried to stand in front of Loopey. Loopey yanked her firmly back to her side. Negaduck still fought with the chainsaw. He couldn’t even get the starter cord to pull. The Negaverse Launchpad swallowed hard, and stepped in front of Loopey and Gosalyn.
A hand squeezed his arm. Darkwing Duck met his gaze. “Need back up?”
“Oh yeah. So bad.”
Darkwing nodded. “You got it, buddy.”
“Stupid piece of trash!” Negaduck hurled the burnt out chainsaw aside.
“Get out of here, Negaduck,” said the Negaverse Launchpad. “You’re done.”
“Oh no. I’ve still got to teach you a lesson. Don’t think because Darkwing is here he’ll…”
Launchpad lunged forward, grabbed Negaduck by the collar, and slammed him up against the nearest support column. He leaned his weight into him, his broad arms crushing Negaduck’s chest, and arms, and not giving him a chance to get his hands around his throat, or get in a kick, or grab for a knife. The act of finally standing up to him loosened the knot in his throat and sent a surge of pride through his chest. “I told you I wasn’t going to let you hurt the McQuacks,” he growled out, and his voice no longer shook.
Even completely immobile, even struggling to chug oxygen into his crumpled lungs, Negaduck’s eyes held no fear. “You. Are going. To pay.”
“No. I’m going to stop you.”
A grin crept onto Negaduck’s face. “Go on then. Show the McQuacks who you really are.”
“Yeah, alright.” Launchpad glanced over his shoulder. “Hey, Darkwing, you still got that knockout gas gun thing?”
Darkwing pulled the gun out of his jacket. “Yup.”
Negaduck choked out a ragged laugh. “You really have gone soft. What you going to do? Let Darkwing put me in jail? That won’t stop me.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know. You’ll get out again in no time. But I don’t care. It’ll give me enough time to really make you pay.”
“You won’t even kill me now you have the chance. Soft.”
“Fine. I’ve gone soft. I like me better this way. But let me tell you what ‘soft’ is going to look like. While you’re in jail, I’m going back to the Negaverse. First thing I’m going to do is find Gosalyn, and…”
“Find Gosalyn? You idiot. You half killed yourself from exhaustion trying to find her when she left. You. Failed.”
A grin slowly crept onto Launchpad’s face. “That’s right. I told you I couldn’t find her. And you believed me.”
“What?!” Negaduck jerked in his grip, and Launchpad had to lean into him to keep him pinned. “Where’s my daughter? Tell me. She’s mine!”
“You don’t own her. But yeah, I found her. And I was all ready to slaughter the guys who had her. But, then, I realised, she was actually happy. Happier than I’ve ever seen her. And I couldn’t take that away from her. Because I knew they would take better care of her than I ever could, and certainly better than you did.”
“You know I never touched her!”
“You think because you used me as her whipping boy that made you a good dad? You found every other way you could to hurt her!” Launchpad fists tightened in Negaduck’s collar. “My biggest regret is I never had the guts to stand up to you and protect her. Well, not anymore. So, yeah, I’m going to find Gosalyn. And I’m going to ask for her forgiveness.”
Negaduck snorted and rolled his eyes. “Oh, yeah, that’s really going to teach me a lesson.”
“And then I’m going to track down the so called Pink Baroness.”
“Who told you… She’s a hack, a nothing! She’s not a threat to me. But she hates your guts. She’ll kill you.”
Launchpad laughed. “Nah. Not my sister. She’ll probably beat the crap out of me, but you know, after that, she might be ready to listen. I’m going to find her and I’m going to join her resistance. I don’t know what she’s doing over there, but I know she’s got you scared.”
Negaduck’s maniac grin had fallen from his face. He was no longer laughing. “You’re making a big mistake.”
Launchpad shook his head. “No. For once I’m thinking straight. You’re not going to be able to enjoy causing havoc over in Darkwing’s Saint Canard. Because all the time you spend here, you’re going to be worrying what we’re doing over there. Inch by inch we’re going to pry the Negaverse from your grip. I’m going home, Negs. And I’m booting you out.”
Launchpad hurled Negaduck roughly onto the ground. Darkwing fired his gas canister. Within seconds, the man Launchpad had feared ever since he’d made him burn his planes to the ground slumped into unconscious, for the moment at least, no longer a threat.
***
The super potent knockout gas kept Negaduck unconscious long enough for an armored truck to make its way out to the small town to collect the supervillian. Still, when the burly guards hauled him into the back of the truck, metal shackles binding his wrists and beak, he somehow managed to turn a groggy glare onto whomever his limp neck allowed his gaze to fall on. Darkwing decided he’d lob another canister in there before they left. A double dose would not leave Negaduck feeling too good. But he’d put the McQuack’s through hell last night, and so Darkwing did not really care.
Standing beside him at the McQuack’s porch railing, Launchpad shifted his weight and rubbed at his chest.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Darkwing asked.
Launchpad rolled his eyes. “You’re as bad as my parents. At least them fussing and calling an ambulance probably worked out okay, especially as they seemed more worried about Dad.”
Unlike the armored car, the ambulance had arrived almost immediately. Ripcord had insisted they call them, and Darkwing was fairly certain Birdie had given in so quickly because not doing so would have worked up her husband even more. When they’d arrived, they’d taken one look at how pale Ripcord was and told him to sit down in the back of the vehicle where they could keep an eye on him. They’d patched up Launchpad in the meantime. Not that they’d actually done much for Ripcord, apart from give him a blanket and left him sitting with the Negaverse Launchpad and Loopey on either side of him. He’d been visibly shaking, and it wasn’t from the cold. Once they’d decided both Launchpad and Ripcord were okay the ambulance had left and Birdie had taken her husband to bed.
“Is he okay? He looked really shook up.”
Launchpad gave a half-hearted shrug. “I think I scared him.”
“LP, you threw yourself on Negaduck’s chainsaw. I know I always say ‘let’s get dangerous’. But first you take on the other Launchpad by yourself, then Negaduck… and his chainsaw.” Darkwing repressed a shudder. Apart from being a ridiculous sharp power tool… “Who knows where that things been.”
Launchpad groaned. “Don’t remind me. Mom says she’s going to take me into town for a tetanus shot in the morning. So I’m really looking forward to that. But it wasn’t just because I jumped on the chainsaw. Dad and me, we talked, out in the canyon. DW, I nearly died as a kid. Dad only just told me. He blamed himself and I think it almost broke up our family. And then I go and throw myself at Negaduck and I think it was just too much for him in one day.”
Darkwing swallowed hard. Sure, that explained Ripcord’s reaction. But the thought that Launchpad could have been gone before he’d even had a chance to know him? He reached out and squeezed his sidekick’s arm. “Launchpad, I’m sorry. Do you need to talk about it?”
“At some stage? Yeah, maybe. But right now…” Launchpad gulped and then went on in a rush. “I know you need me for flying the Thunderquack and everything, but I’m really worried about Dad. I can’t just leave him, and I should spend some time with my parents anyway, and…”
“Hey, it’s okay, buddy. I’ll escort Negaduck back to Saint Canard. I already spoke to your double. We agreed once I’ve got Negaduck safely locked up he’ll bring back the Thunderquack and Gosalyn. You can take as long as you need.”
Launchpad rubbed at the corner of his eye. “You gonna trust him with Gosalyn?”
Darkwing winced. “I’m not sure I trust Gosalyn with him. I don’t know what those two are going to get up to on a long plane ride together. But it doesn’t matter. I want to make it as easy as possible for you to stay here as long as you need.”

Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Cast Interview: Kikunosuke Toya
A character who is ridiculous at first, but you grow to understand
What were your thoughts when it was first decided you would play Denji?
I was very happy! It was announced by the agency as a surprise, so all I could say was something like, "Really?! Okay!" (laughs). It was my first time being casted as the main character in an anime, and I'm really honored to have been given the leading role. At the same time, Chainsaw Man has a passionate fanbase and is a work with a very unique worldview, so I felt a lot of pressure.
What was your impression of Denji, and what about him appealed to you?
My first impression was: "Working so hard just to hold someone's breasts, what a ridiculous character!" But as I read more, I started to understand the thought process behind his actions. From Denji's standpoint, there's nothing wrong with wanting to touch someone's chest, or getting mad when someone makes fun of him; his upbringing and thought processes are totally different from normal people I think Denji's good points are that he is a reliable person and works hard to achieve his goals. There are also cute things about him, like when Makima feeds him udon and he acts a bit like a dog. On the other hand, when he transforms into Chainsaw Man, all I can say is that he's crazy (laughs). The boldness of being able to kill demons without hesitation is refreshing.
What was your approach when acting?
Director Nakayama told me that he wanted me to do a play that was closer to live-action than anime. For other anime works, I would think about adding nuance or emphasizing the dialogue, but for Denji, I focused on drama-like acting, thinking, " How would I speak in my everyday life?'' When I acted out the first episode in a way that sounded more like me, the director told me to act in the same way, but to make the sentence endings sound a little more punk-like, and from there I worked on creating a more Denji-like character. Other than that, since I'm acting based on reality, for the scene where Denji speaks while lying down, I actually lied down at home and tried out what kind of voice would come out in that position, before recording. But I found out you can't really make a sound when lying down, apparently.
How has the response been so far?
Since the first episode, I received solid instructions from Director Nakayama and Sound Director Koizumi-san, so I think I was able to capture the character of Denji there. Because of this, I could confidently intensify my Denji performance in the following episodes.
What should people pay attention to in the beginning?
Denji's monologue in the first episode before he becomes Chainsaw Man. "Why did these people wish for a better life when they are so blessed?" the dialouge in this scene was so good, it was easy to get emotional and I almost cried while acting it out. You can see that Denji is thinking carefully and looking at himself as well, saying, "Am I the same? I wasn’t satisfied with the happiness I had with Pochita…"
You'll fall in love with Denji's distinctive way of thinking!
What did you think of the original Chainsaw Man manga?
When I first read it, it felt like I went through a storm. I read up to volume 11 in one go after completing the first part, and I was so surprised that I cried after I finished reading it. The story unfolded so quickly that I was left wondering, "Huh? Huh? What?" After reading it several times, I finally understood.
What is your favorite Denji scene in the manga?
I like Denji's out-of-the-box ideas that I would never have come up with, like the "dream battle" in the fight against the Leech Devil, or the competition to see who can kick Katana Man in the crotch hardest with Aki. When he did his "power of light" idea in the battle with Santa Claus, or when he rode Beam during the fight with Reze, I thought "no way!" (Laughs). I generally like Denji's blunt scenes.
Now that it's finally on air, please give a message to your fans.
The original work has great dynamism in its illustrations, such as scenes of blood gushing out and battles, but the animated version of Chainsaw Man has the impact of moving as it is. Both the staff and actors are working hard on the anime version, and every detail has been carefully crafted to embody the atmosphere of the original work. We're really looking forward to it, so let's enjoy the wonderful finished anime together!
Translation notes:
I've written his name with the family name (Toya) last.
Additionally, there is a lot of (笑)in the interview, I translated that as (laughs)
In the second question, he technically says chest, but the sentence did not make as much sense.
サムライソード, or Samurai Sword, is known as Katana Man in the official English translation.
I was more specific about the scene that the actor mentions when he is talking about his favorite Denji scenes. The moment is known as「最強の大会を開く」to Japanese fans but English fans wouldn't recognize it.

Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Supporting Cast Interview
Q&A with Shiori Izawa (Pochita), Mariya Ise (Himeno), Karin Takahashi (Kobeni), Taku Yashiro (Arai), and Kenjirou Tsuda (Kishibe)
Shiori Izawa (Pochita)
Your impression & the appeal of your character?
Of course his cute appearance (his round eyes, cute mouth, and size that makes you want to hug him), but most of all, it's the strong love he has for Denji that's charming to so many people. I think. To give everything you have because you want this person to live is the most precious wish in the world, isn't it?
How did you prepare for the role?
I wanted to cherish the original work's setting as much as possible, so I'd say "wan" as "wan," and "woof" as "woof." He says human words, but is neither man or woman, neither an adult nor a child, but has a strong presence, and I was careful with his words to convey the kindness and strength of entrusting Denji-kun with the rest of his life.
Favorite Chainsaw Man character?
Beam-kun!! I love him!! His love for "Lord Chainsaw" and his loyalty is the best. And he's, surprisingly, really capable!
I'm very curious about Makima's classified past.
Favorite chapter of Chainsaw Man manga?
Chapter 71, where Denji-kun and Aki-kun take turns taking care of Power-chan, who has become mentally unstable after returning from Hell. Even the weakened Power-chan is cute and super endearing, and the way that Denji-kun and Aki-kun are working together to return to their daily lives feels kind of like they're the older brothers of the family.
Scariest devil to you?
Misunderstanding Devil.
In a lot of stories, bad things happen due to misunderstandings or people having the wrong idea about something.
Message for fans?
Please bask in the overwhelming blood, violence, and love. The rollercoaster of emotions will definitely make you feel alive (lol). Let's work together to help Denji make his dreams come true!
Mariya Ise (Himeno)
Your impression & the appeal of your character?
I think Himeno, the character I play, is the one with the highest level of empathy and the most human touch in her work. (Of course, she works as a devil hunter in Public Safety, so there's a lot about her personality that stands out) In the world of Chainsaw Man, it is impossible to play the role of a "respectable" human being, in a sense, it was a challenge, and I found it very interesting to portray Himeno's feelings and humanity.
How did you prepare for the role?
I want to play Himeno as a real human being. I want her to exist as a human being, not as a fictional character. This is something I was especially conscious of when playing Himeno. In order to express even a little of what she has experienced in Public Safety and her way of thinking, we thought about things not depicted in the original work, like her past or her feelings towards Aki, and developed those feelings. To get a deeper understanding of Himeno, I tried to regularly live as her, downloaded a lot of Himeno and Aki illustrations (lol), I thought a lot about how I spent my time outside of dubbing and how I faced the characters.
Favorite Chainsaw Man character?
Before I played Himeno, I liked Makima and Guanxi-sama and their abilities! Nowadays, I can't help but see from Himeno's perspective, so Denji, Power-chan, Aki-kun, Kobeni-chan, Arai-kun…all the friends I fought alongside in Public Safety are important to me, so it's hard to narrow down my favorites.
Favorite chapter of Chainsaw Man manga?
There are too many….. I re-read the original story to choose one, and I found myself liking every scene and chapter all over again!! I just couldn't choose, but when I focused on Himeno, I liked the scene where she brings the last cigarette she had in her mouth to Aki-kun's mouth, and the scene where she and Denji talk over breakfast…. also, there's the "mo~… moo cow…" scene!
Scariest devil?
Laziness Devil.
The scary thing about this devil is that he doesn't remember making a contract, so he somehow takes up residence in people's hearts and makes contracts with him without permission. I don't like it! Stop it! There's so much to do! Aaaaaah!…… (laze)
Message for fans?
I couldn't be happier to be able to play my favorite character from the original work that I love so much. In order to not disappoint the expectations of the fans of the original work, I will dedicate my body and soul to Himeno, so please look forward to it!!
Karin Takahashi (Kobeni Higashiyama)
Your impression & the appeal of your character?
I think her lack of self-confidence is cute and makes me want to protect her, and I think her agility in battle is cool. Although she is a bit of a quirky girl, she makes me smile and has an adorable impression.
How did you prepare for the role?
I think of Kobeni as a normal child, so I am conscious in the back of her mind that I don't make her too unique. She is also a child who expresses her emotions directly. So I tried to express my honest feelings.
Favorite Chainsaw Man character?
It's Kobeni-chan! I read the original Chainsaw Man before it was decided to be made into an anime, and Kobeni-chan has always been my favorite. There's something dangerous about her that you can't take your eyes off of, and I love how funny and cute she is.
Favorite chapter of Chainsaw Man manga?
My favorite is the scene “Easy Revenge” in Chapter 35. It's a very painful scene where you can really feel Himeno-senpai's feelings for Aki-kun, but at the same time I think it's beautiful. Also, it's cute that Kobeni wants a bonus.
Scariest devil?
Small Talk Devil (lol) I'm a little shy about people, and even during dubbing, I find myself thinking things like, "I want to talk to you, but what should I say?" or "Is this the right time to talk to you?"
Message for fans?
I'm happy to be a part of the coolest anime. I would be happy if you could love Kobeni-chan, who is loved by everyone in the original work, in the anime as well! Thank you!
Taku Yashiro (Hirokazu Arai)
Your impression & the appeal of your character?
Arai is a serious and straightforward character. To borrow Kishibe-san's words, I don't think he's a character that's very suitable for a work called Chainsaw Man (lol). I think that's what makes him so appealing.
How did you prepare for the role?
I was conscious of the contrast in the scary scenes.
I felt that what was clearly different amongst Denji and the others was whether or not they had fear of death, anxiety and expectations for the future.
Favorite Chainsaw Man character?
Denji. I was truly drawn to the obstacles he overcame in his life, his strength, and his fear. He is my favorite protagonist.
Favorite chapter of Chainsaw Man manga?
The scene in Part 1 where Denji declares to Aki, "If I can keep livin' this kinda life, then I don't mind dying."
Scariest devil?
Sleep. Absolutely irresistible. I can't win. Once we met, it was over. I think. Give Up.
Message for fans?
I'm sure there are many people who were looking forward to this work becoming an anime. I'm one of them too. Let's get excited together.
Kenjirou Tsuda (Kishibe)
Your impression & the appeal of your character?
Kishibe, a man with overwhelming strength. He's a character with a unique intimidating energy that's both cool and cold. You have no idea what he's thinking, and he has a cool indifferent demeanor. He's that kind of character.
How did you prepare for the role?
I was conscious of the director's request for a restrained performance. I held back to the point that I felt anxious, then I chipped and chipped away. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the performance comes out.
Favorite Chainsaw Man character?
Kishibe. Basically, I like the characters I get to play, but Kishibe is the one I really wanted to play. His quietness, eeriness, and presence are interesting and cool.
Favorite chapter of Chainsaw Man manga?
This work has overwhelming power in its character, story, and setting. I think the battle scenes are where that charm is fully revealed. Blood, violence, purity, and a punkish energy that destroys common sense are exploding.
Scariest devil?
"The devil that makes everything else a hassle" appears when you start concentrating on something. This is a scary demon. Because it doesn't want to do anything else other than what it's doing now. It will cause various problems. Can anyone tell me how to fight it?
Message for fans?
How will the tremendous energy of the original work be expressed in animation? How does the restrained performance animate the characters? I'm really looking forward to it myself. I would appreciate it if you could wait a little longer. It's exciting. I want to see it soon.
Translation notes:
Translated(笑) as (lol) (i think these interviews were conducted through text)
Essentially, what she's saying here is that she wanted to do everything exactly the way it happened in the manga. "Wan" is the Japanese onomatopoeia for barking, but since she says "woof" in the next sentence, I just wrote it as "wan."
Shiori says bad things happen in stories due to 「誤解」や「勘違い」, these words translate to similar words in English but are not synonymous in Japanese. 勘違い translates to misunderstanding, but is more about someone having an assumption that is incorrect, while 誤解 is a misunderstanding (as in incorrectly understanding something).
Shiori describes Makima's past as マキマは口止めされている過去, a more direct translation would be "past that has been forbidden to speak about," so I translated that as "classified" to convey that it's secret and to convey that someone has made it secret (as implied by the passive verb conjugation used in the sentence).
Shiori describes Power as 最高に萌えます, it is likely that an anime fan (the audience of this article) would be familar with the concept of moe, but since it's used as a verb here I decided to translate it to "endearing".
Shiori talks about Denji and Aki in chapter 71 as 家族に「お兄ちゃん」がいたらこんな感じなのかなー!, which would directly translate to "I wonder if this is how it would feel if there was an older brother in the family," in the context of the sentence, I'm assuming that what she's saying here is that Denji and Aki are giving the older brother feeling.
In the official Chainsaw Man, the division is called "Public Safety," so that's what I've translated it to here (instead of Public Security)
Kenjirou's fan message, he says 抑制された芝居がどんな形でキャラクターを動かしていくのか, which would directly be "how does… move the characters," but I went with animate because I felt that more clearly conveyed what he was trying to say.

Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Cast Interview: Ai Fairouz
How did you feel when you got the role of Power?
It's kind of cliché, but really really happy… because I've always loved Chainsaw Man and I thought "I just want to audition!" I was thinking, even if it's difficult, I just want to take on the challenge. But as the selection process progressed, I started feeling more like, "I'm definitely going to play Power-chan!" My manager and I worked together to create the performance and figure out "Would Power-chan talk like this?", so I was happy when the role was decided.
How did you develop your performance during recording?
It was a little hard to compare and adjust our different mental images of Power. At first, I spoke with my natural voice, but Director Nakayama wanted more of a "younger sister" feeling, so I changed to a higher voice. However, if you go too high, it comes off like you're trying to flirt, so that adjustment was challenging. Also, I asked Director Nakayama how he chose the cast, and he said, "I chose people whose voices I felt matched the nature of the characters," and that made my hesitation disappear. I realized I just needed to act natural without overthinking, and I could adjust my performance accordingly.
What scene would you like people to pay attention to in episode 2, where Power first appears?
It was also in the teaser PV, but the scene where Power jumps off the building has amazing movement. It's that movement that can only be seen in anime, so definitely pay attention! For Power's lines, it was especially fun to act out the last line, "The kill is mine! Gahahahaha!" I laughed as hard as I could. I was recording with Toya-kun, who plays Denji, and Sakata-kun, who plays Aki, and they both laughed, so I was happy. I was asked to act naturally, but she's an inhuman character, so I tried a lot of things when performing, I hope people will pay attention to that. We also paid special attention to the recording environment, like changing the microphone position for each character and line, so I'm looking forward to seeing the finished anime!
What did you think of the original Chainsaw Man manga?
I remember reading because I saw it in a bookstore and liked the illustrations, and I was shocked by the phrase "Tomato Devil" (laughs). The protagonists' life was also shocking. After reading the entire series, I really realized that this is an avant-garde work, nothing like this has been made before. The art is a combination of retro and pop, with color schemes that only Fujimoto-sensei could create, and the story is set in present-day but with a twist I've never seen before, and I thought it was very unique.
What do you think is the appeal of Power?
She has the worst personality, but you can't hate her. Also, I think what's appealing about her is that she's honest about her feelings. Usually, she says absurd things like "Let me kill people when I want to!" However, when Nyako is swallowed by Bat Devil, she openly expresses her feelings to Denji, saying "I understand your feelings." That kind of honesty is really charming.
Is there any way you personally connect with Power?
It would be bad if we could understand each other (laughs), but I think she would be me if I could say everything I wanted to say. For example, if you see a group of people walking spread out on a narrow street, you'd want them to move a little, right? I would say "excuse me," and then pass, but Power would say "Get out of the way, human!" and push through.
Do you have a message for the fans?
The anime has been made with excellent quality, it won't disappoint fans of the original work or new fans of the anime, so when you watch, please pay attention to each and every detail.
Translation notes:
Ai says 「チェンソーマン」は元々大好きな作品, which would directly translate to something like "Chainsaw Man has always been a work I love," or "Chainsaw Man has always been my favorite work," but that sounds unnatural in English, so I translated it to keep the same meaning while sounding more natural by saying "I've always loved Chainsaw Man".
Ai says という気持ちが強くなっていったんです, meaning her feeling became stronger, but I translated it to sound a bit more natural in English.
When Ai mentions Power's line in episode 2, I used the official English translation of the line instead of re-translating it from the interview.
Translated(笑) to (laughs).
